Okay here is my quick outline.

Here are my argumentations and thoughts.

1. Let everyone get the basic most important information. I have
summarized the key things the user needs to learn within 5 seconds.

2. In-depth information has been placed aside. These target audiences
should read the basic stuff as well.

3. This idea would replace the current why site, that I today personally
feel is too complicated.

Feel free to comment the idea. Note however that its just that, an idea.

Thanks, Per! Good start: short and sharp ;-)

Few thing that I miss:
 - OpenOffice.org is free for all and with all features, always. I hear
adds on the radio for cost-saving products all day long. So I see no
reason to be shy about our product to be gratis.

- What about compatible and available for all major os-ses?

For those reading Dutch, two links to simple sites done by my self:

When people are interested, I can supply translations.

I like it (and support Andy's point about "coolness").

But I'm not quite sure if the four points mentioned (and the ranking
among them) will be the most attractive reasons for not yet convinced
new users for OpenOffice.org.

What about
"Future proof file format" or something like that?

Are new features really our top-level reason to use OOo?

For me personally the existing features, covering all necessary tasks,
are more important.

The second point would be extensions, after that new features.

Then security, file format and openness.

But these are just my personal thoughts - not necessarily more valuable
than any other ...

Best regards

Bernhard

2009-07-13 Thread Manos Batsis

I've been up for way too long but from a user's perspective the
differences between a free as in beer version of MS office and
OpenOffice.org are:

* OpenOffice.org is free in it's entirety, AFAIK MS Office will not.
* OpenOffice.org is under an OSI approved license and will thus
practically remain for ever so, while usage terms of MS Office allow it
to play fair only while it needs to do so.

IMHO, we should present this move as a consequence of OpenOffice.org
been widely used today, thus pressing upon the issue of continuing the
same momentum for the community's benefit.

I'll go finish my beer and java code now.

Cheers,

Manos

Then again more to my point we need to fund this project in a larger
ways that we are currently funding it. Having better revenue models
that we can benefit either from companies that use our service or our
some times demand our service and we dont even communicate it well to
them.

I think Mozilla isn't comparable with us quite well.

Mozilla's marketing people are mostly paid by Mozilla, i.e. they have
much more time and ressources available. From what I know, Mozilla
meets regularly with all team members, paid by the company. This for
sure makes things much easier in comparison to what we have available.
We can't simply travel through the world, attend every event and use 8
hours a day for marketing. :-)

For the resources we have available, I think we do a very good job -
which doesn't mean that there is not room for improvement. ;-)

What we simply have to do it try to reach the same goals with different
methods.

I am missing more graphical work and people who ready understand
simpleness. This is things I will focus on in my proposal :-)

I think mozilla is doing a great job because they focus on activities
and that is usually fun. I tried to get some of our funds to really
put the marketing efforts on a next level but seems this wasn't a top
priority.

I still think that the online community want to see our developers
code and explain how to code in OOo.

They want to see spokesman/woman talking about the ease of useness for
regular people without tricks and difficulties.

And of course the services that we provide are stillnot productize
like the free support you get on the forums and mailing lists.

No I think we could do a much better job. Also we could also promote
the increase performanced that has stigmatized OOo for so many years.
