[RFC] Call for more development participation
Hi list, we expect that we have a huge ammount of people reading the list because they use Kannel actively as SMS or/and WAP gateway for their commercial purposes. Alexander and I had a couple of discussions today about how strong (or consider the word weak better) the participation in the Kannel Group is concerning bug fixing, feature enhancements and general development activities. Unfortunatly we both came to the conclussion that it is *very poor*. It's almost unacceptable that currently only a couple of people are commited to the efforts of Kannel and it's future development. We don't claim responsibility. This is still an open source project and as people can deside to contribute they can alos deside to stop contribution. This was the case for WapIT and 3G Lab (as companies) in example. But we *do claim* responsibility of parties that take the benefits of open source by monetozing the work others do for their personal use. Those people should be aware of their responsibility and should contribute to the benefits of their own and the benefits of those who made their initial life with Kannel easier. So please take this as moral conclussion in terms of the upcoming chrismas days and think about the ideas and roles of participation within open source software projects... to refraze it in religion words: it's worth more to give, then to take. Angel Fradejas wrote: But here, to be frank, I have certain bad feelings that my contributions (not only code, but also ideas, suggestions, RFCs, etc.) have not been very sucessful (surely for very good reasons), but anyway you cannot abstract from that feelings. It comes to my minf for example discussing the need to make billing-info flow from smsbox to bearerbox (and there were several patches for that, not mine I have to say), and everybody replying that billing were something outside the scope of kannel, and so on, so we had the extra work of keeping that kind of patch in sync with cvs version, and then one day, voilá, binfo= appears without any further explanation. That is the kind of randomness I'm referring to. Nobody takes offense from my comments, please. I'm just trying to explain my thoughts. we're definetly thankfull for this. And I *do* agree that it has been (in a sense of way) randomness. My explanation to this is hence the coherent fact that there have been too few people actively taking the ability to discuss. I have a good counter-example where colaboration in fact *did* work, even while the essential part hasn't been solved. Think of the discussion in joining the ASF as project. Andreas had concerns about this and did not give up in trying to express them and convince people about his concerns. In fact this brainstorming was one the last good things I remember in having a real group-orientated concensus. That's what Alex and me are missing -- active group consensus. This also includes making suggestions, makeing patches, envisioning possibilities and getting refused by the group. It's like in political life, if you're in the role of the opposition, does it mean that you stop being active, critical to the active government party only because you can't force changes and opinions? No. I consider this as a long-term issue. Personally, I'm very thankfull and honorebly respect the work Angel and his company contributed to Kannel. -- (and I liked to talk we had in Hannover ;) -- so please keep rolling Stipe mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] --- Wapme Systems AG Münsterstr. 248 40470 Düsseldorf, NRW, Germany phone: +49.211.74845.0 fax: +49.211.74845.299 mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] http://www.wapme-systems.de/ --- -BEGIN PGP PUBLIC KEY BLOCK- Version: GnuPG v1.2.2 (Cygwin) mIsEP6mcYwEEAMDnUiUwrbb+xwTFWN6TxF2+XZu7/alwJMeCwMBRvXtPZqfjpPhS OkBpU0F4TrVuugz1HINTSaJTYq10AzDQXp5NkyWgckqW79nPAWuOX0dicbJk+cN2 nM2TI4KaxUDe6u8hghNEnH/i2lXsUu9apnP/iixzV81VC2je3uc9hZpnAAYptEVT dGlwZSBUb2xqIChUZWNobm9sb2d5IENlbnRlciAmIFJlc2VhcmNoIExhYikgPHRv bGpAd2FwbWUtc3lzdGVtcy5kZT6ItAQTAQIAHgUCP6mcYwIbAwYLCQgHAwIDFQID AxYCAQIeAQIXgAAKCRABV0w1BqPYRuSqA/wPzsQxao2YePENCtgRTrO86U6zg3sl OcS6CJFI4FZP5h/xD3GRsNH1+MPSvZlomDdpFnr547DGz/Kq9MXuQwVvlVig5yWZ K5dtKp1r5YLhxJQBhfirZbRFFnYmf19f18J8OoS28tuFVftDl1AIwJS3HLyBTv6H g2HyLAEKQIp30Q== =aYCI -END PGP PUBLIC KEY BLOCK-

Re: [PATCH] Binding HTTP clients calls to specific interface
guys, keep in mind that email clients will show your mail postings in cascading threads, because they do send references. If you switch the semantical context of your mail, then please try *NOT* to post an answer to an other thread, because this makes organizational structuring of mail threads harder and people are tend to get confused if the semantical context switches in a mail thread branch. My company has a requirement to offer an SMPP interface to third parties, something that Kannel currently lacks. I understand however, that the project is currently working on an SMPP Box. Does anyone know who is working on it and when it is due for release? If not anytime soon, is it possible for me to get a beta version? I may be able to offer the project some testing and post my results. it's finished and working yes. Re: SMS Gateway Clarifications
Hello Srinivasa, To implement this SMS Gateway for GSM Networks , should we pay special charges to the Service provider and whether the Kannel Gateway has to be implemented in the side of Service provider or in our own inhouse setup. Please clarify the above doubts to enable us to proceed further. I didn't get you question/doubt in here clearly. Can you please re-fraze it. Kannel is considered as SMS gateway for entities that are not directly GSM operators. Which means Kannel can be bound to several (actually a lot of ;) SMSCs and hence act as a gateway to the destination networks. In terms of a GSM operator itself, they do usually intercarrier routing via SS7 (which is a lower network layer). But Kannel *may* be used as intercarrier routing facility (ie. using SMPP as protocol) on the transport layer. Is there a bug in the software or is this a phone compatibility issue ? I tried to decompile the first SMS message send. Is the interpretation correct and can you help me with the PDU header ? first question you should answer is: is the m-notification-ind.txt you pass to the PPG already in MMS-encoded (binary) form? If not, then this is the problem. Kannel has yet no own MMS encoder/decoder routines as defined by the MMSEncapsulation protocol. Which is pretty straight forward to WSP. You will have to ensure that you pass the actual MMS-encoded binary data to the PPG. Basically I want to get to know how kannel works and I have just read all teh user documentation. I have just bought a siemens MC35i and connected it to a linux box runing Redha Linux 9.0. I am including my kannel.conf file as an attachment. I would appreciate any help you could give me. What I want to do is just receive a text message and look at some of the parameters like the sender's phone number, etc. I have written a java servlet which just reads the parameters from the url and writes them to a database. The servlet works if you manually enter the url with a query string. However, when I send a text message to this number, i don't get anything in any of the log files or in my database and I am just wondering if I am doing the write thing. The way I undestand kannel is that you define an sms-service and specify a url to fetch when a message is received. Now, i don't want to fetch a url. I just want to see the sender's details and the message. The modem seems to work fine. I look forward to hearing from you. Mnay thanks James Yahoo! Its only the middle of January and already I've implemented yet another NDA'd, XML/HTTP proprietary transaction model for yet another operator, designed by yet another consultant which is just yet another variant on all the other XML/HTTP interfaces out there. Sure, you can share functions etc. but it still needs to documented, tested, maintained, regressed etc. And guess what - it sits in front of a stable, tried and tested SMPP SMSC !. Its so stupid. I hope the Microsoft/Vodafone mobile web services thing stomps all over these guys. /rant welcome to the club ;) I might look at this when I have the time, but riht now I need this yesterday ;-). I think I have (avery proprietary) fallback.. :-( b) tell them to give you a native UCP account and use SSL tunnel or VPN for security. IPSEC VPNs make the most sense IMHO... +1 I will do that, but I wont hold my breath.. BTW. If I get such an account, can I then use Kannel with the emi module if I compile it with OpenSSL? You'll need to modify the EMI code to use the SSL I/O functions I'd guess. But the mechanisms that Stipe is suggesting in b) don't need any code changes, just configuration on your box. You could also use ssh/ssh2 to do encrypted tunnelling (at least I can do this with VNC, so it should work for other TCP applications). yep, Paul is right. Forgot to mention this. I think you are quoting that out of the context now; what the quotation means is that it is _possible_ to link for example Kannel with GPL'd software - but then the whole bundle must be GPL'd. Your quotation just tells, that Kannel licence, being a free one, is GPL-compatible and does not prevent it being made GPL. But there is no question about linking: linking GPL'd program with another program means that you have to release the combined program under GPL. AFAIK Jari is right here. That's the essential restriction on the GPL, forcing combined components to be morphed into the same policy, hence GPL. Which is definetly a problem. But this would imply only, that someone who wants mysql support is not able to distribute the bundled binaries (hence included libmysqlclient) under BSD style. He would require to make the whole set available under GPL. Right? [PATCH-RFC] adding pids to logging
Hi list, we'd like to add the pid (process id) logging into the standard Kannel output log format. This may be used for further thread and process debugging. This would imply the change of the log-file format from timestamp [thread id] log-level log message to timestamp [process id] [thread-id] log-level log message so we _add_ the pid as second argument of the log format. We use getpid() in gwlib/gwthread-pthread.c:new_thread() to get the thread process id of the OS and safe it to the threadinfo structure. While formating the log line, we call a function which is similar to gwthread_self() and returns two values, the tid and pid, writing those to the log line. So there is no performance decrease in doing this. Any objections to modify the standard log-file format into this? NOTE: this may imply of source that people who do analyze the logs would have to change parser routines or regex expressions accordingly. My reason for asking is that rewriting SonyEricssonT68i to SonyEricssonT610 in the User-Agent header would limit the number of physical phones I would need to have on my table, and allow me to test wapping using phones I do not even have so some sort of regexp replacement (or just string-matching) of the headers before they are sent to the webservers would fulfill my requirements. If noone has done it, but someone could see the use for it, would it then be accepted as a patch to Kannel, should I develop it myself? (considered that the quality is good enough off course...) we are always open to enhancements that make sense. IMO, this makes sense in some extend and if the code is clean and fits well, I'll be reviewing. zohar wrote: Hi, I tried getting some answers on the users' list, but nobody answered. I hope I have better luck here: 1. Is it possible to limit the listening endpoint in kannel to specific interfaces, instead of them listening on all IPs? yes, you can define in the conf file to which interface you want to bind. Please see the user's guide for more details. 2. Is it possible to control the URLs accessible via the WAP Gateway? yes, you can have a mapping that restricts simply those that are not mapped. Which means the WAP GW will allow access to those URLs that are not mapped, and those that are mapped (via asterics) can be mapped to those that are allowed anyway. Another option here is off course IP based FW rules to disallow everything except the hosts/URLs that are about to be allowed. I know this has been reported in the past, but Ive noticed it again... We have around 12 smpp connections out from our kannel server, and most of the uptimes are what i would expect, however some are off, ie: smsc nameSMPP:smpp1.xxx/name idsmpp1/id statusonline 38909s/status received118/received sent147/sent failed2/failed queued0/queued /smsc smsc nameSMPP:smpp2.xxx/name idsmpp2/id statusonline 1075901068s/status received12/received sent8/sent failed0/failed queued0/queued /smsc This is from version cvs-20040202, and both were started at the same time and havent dropped as far as i know. Let me know what kind of info to look at to try and trace it - Im not sure where to find it! Bill, can you do me a favor and check if this has been filed to http://bugs.kannel.org/. If not, please do so, so we keep track of it. BTW, the issue is known and we see it on our systems too. But currently it's of minor importance, so there seems non of us actively tracing it. As for me, it is obvious. But I also think you have your own opinions on that :) now, that opionion of me is not that clean to be honest. I do gentely recognize that other projects do have considerable ammount of quality in their aims, like curl of course. Which is a pro factor in adding it to Kannel. On the other side, actually having to much dependencies makes things harder. Not even on the software, logic compliance related side, also on the licensing side. Alex would say now: Ohh yes, we have, and I wonder how it works ;). Now, it does work, and we actually are not in demanding need to drop curl in there. One is using SOAP, another using normal HTTP calls with headers, and the other one using bytes transfer and only one using industrial SMPP protocols. which shows us again, (hip hip hurray), why we have collaborative standard bodies that define protocolls to make life easier for all ;) I involve a lot in Kannel features customization to meet our own needs, and thus I do some debugging and coding in Kannel C codes. I don't mind if I take part to continue completing this module. But my skills and knowledge is limited and I need more guidance from you guys to complete it. Kannel has its own library for all protocols like HTTP, Socket, etc. What I need is actually a bit more detailed description and how it all layered in the Kannel. I'm using a kannel snapshot version and I turned on the concatenation in my conf. file of kannel snapshot version but everytime I try to send a multi- part sms... The binfo is included for every part of the sms...How can I prevent this...I want the binfo only available for the first part of the sms... hmm, that's a sort of a problem. The binfo is within the sms msg struct _before_ splitting the sms into the technical needs of the pysical tranmission layers. So you would like to define the binfo field, but would also like to drop the information _only_ into the first of the slitted sms, right? Which protocoll is used for transmission, SMPP, EMI? [RFC] MT billing logic layer
Hi list, since the discussion of the binfo field brings this up again. We here at Wapme have been thinking of providing some internal layer in bearerbox to make MT billing possible. Now, I know that the group has actually refused to handle billing aspects within Kannel itself. Most of use had the intention to let Kannel be the message transporter and nothing else. As demands come up here in Germany too, it may be usefull _at least_ to provide an abstraction layer with hooks that _can_ be implemented on an individual basis for the billing data purposes. This may imply actually something like the authentication step within an HTTP server. Hence when an MO is tranmitted by the SMSC, we may assume that the SMSC is not aware of the prepaid balance of the user, and our abstraction layer is in charge of checking if the MO SMS is about to be processed/transported. Same for MT (and for premium services). Any comments on this please! Re: kannel smpp co-exist problems
Christopher Kho wrote: Hi, I am trying to configure 2 kannel (smpp) for 2 different projects. My provider has set up an login account for me to connect to their smsc. I am able to connect to the smsc with no problem. I has been assigned with 2 different numbers for those projects, 1 and 2. So I setup kannel and smsbox configuration for both kannel1 (version 1.2.1) and kannel2 (version 1.3.1). Everthing runs ok ...both kannel are up. However if I test and send an sms to 1 sometime kannel2 (2) would get it and vice versa. I suspect that maybe because my provider has setup the same account for both project so there is a conflict or is it a bug in kannel? I have also tried to combined the 2 project since the login account is the same for both of them but I still no luck. There is no smsc mo group so I can't denied-smsc-id for the mo. Anyone face similar problem or knows a way to get around this or the proper way of going about it or even a patch to kannel? Please adviceBelow is a portion of kannel.conf this sounds to me that you are connecting from both kannel instances with the same SMPP login (large account) and the operator has assigned only the shortcode numbers to that *one* large account. Hence if you send an sms from a mobile to one of the numbers, it may be delivererd by the smcs to one of the both connections. Which is not heuristical then. If you need clean seperation of the traffic, then you can ask your provider to have each shortcode number bound to one unique SMPP large account/login. Anyway. You could do the trick also on your own, by setting only *one* kannel instance with either one or two SMPP links, get all sms by those and route by the receiver number (shortcode) within the smsbox via sms-service groups. See user's guide for details on how to match a specific service to an URL. Re: Source TCP port for Kannel
my Smsc gave me an UCP access but it requires me to connect FROM a defined PORT and IP address TO a defined PORT and IP address. Saying that the EMI/UCP server I need to connect TO is 191.9.65.89 port 5002 and that my kannel box should connect from 242.31.225.60 port 9000 I've set: group = smsc smsc = emi host = 191.9.65.89 port = 5002 smsc-username = Pamela smsc-password = Anderson keepalive = 60 our-port = 9000 receive-port = 900 If I trace the connection with tcpdump, I get that my kannel box connects from 242.31.225.60 port 62523 (this port changes) and not the 9000 as specified in the connection. Question: 1) Am I doing something wrong ? 2) If the our-port does not provide the source port config parameter, how do I setup kannel to open the tcp from the port 9000 ? the 'our-port' defines the _server_ port of your side of the UCP server itself is about to establish an TCP connection for MO tranmissions ie. It is _not_ defining the client TCP port of the connection towards the server. The OS is assigning this socket port and you _don't_ have a way in defining this inside Kannel's config file. You'll have to go with Linux IP tables and NAT rules to map this. Unfortunatly I can't drop you an very easy example for this. You should either patch Kannel's source to define a hard way in connecting with pre-defined client ports or ask your local Linux guru about the OS IP layer way in doing this. I was wondering whether you are aware of such problems in 1.2.1 (or on specific platforms) and if that's the case whether a workaround exists. the stable 1.2.1 is outdated in terms of bug fixes and improvements. There is used hardcoded WSP_1_2 instead of real one. ok, AFAIR, the state machine has the encoding version handled and we pass this to wsp_headers_pack() as argument and that one uses wsp_string_to_versioned_header() to select the right binary representation for the header, right?! Re: Using kannel's WAP-stack
As library level, it should not indeed to be too hard: a) Add class 2 transaction WTP state initiator state table (class 1 there already) b) WSP client state table c) Push client. There is already some code for this, but you must add the logic to handle incoming messages GUI is another matter. I would say about a month for libs I would drop the GUI issue totally for now. The WAP client stack implementation would be of importance in order to really hard test also MMSCs, right?! This would imply we could have a software WAP/MMS client that would act transparently like a huge set of phones and test/benchmark performances of real-time MMSC architectures. This may be a valueable impact for the upcoming MMS hypering in the next years (hope so ;) Is there any time on your side Aarno for this? Martin Lucina wrote: I would like to integrate this functionality into the upstream version of Kannel. At present the use of charset_gsm_to_latin1 () and charset_latin1_to_gsm () is hardcoded in the SMSCs -- would it make sense to remove these conversions and convert the message only when it is processed by smsbox, based on the setting of an option in the configuration file? Is anyone else working on this/interested in such functionality? ok, Kannel assumes that it threads its internal message format in latin1. This is in some sence a convention. Unfortunatly it may be desirable, like in your actual case, to preserve the charset (in sense of the available characters that can be represented by the set). I'd be +0 in having this configurable by config file. Which means avoiding the automated convertion to latin1 internally. In any case you can send us a 'diff -u'ed patch and people will have a review on it and vote if it makes considerable sense. Regarding the production status of the current CVS, are there any major issues if I were to upgrade a setup using 1.3.1 to CVS? (Aside from those already documented, modules getting renamed and so on?). I have several SMSC connections, using both UCP and SMPP. CVS is way more stable and reliable then 1.3.1. Re: [PATCH] SMS dropped on the floor when SMSCConn down
Martin Lucina wrotw: I'm experiencing a problem with Kannel, both with version 1.3.1 and reproducible elsewhere with the current CVS): In a multi-operator setup I have some SMSC connections which are polled over a dialup link. There is a script that connects the PPP link periodically, sends a start-smsc command to Kannel for SMSCs behind that link, polls for messages for some time, downs the link and sends stop-smsc to Kannel. If our application attempts to send an SMS via Kannel to one of the SMSCs when they are down (Kannel status records them as 'dead') then the following gets logged (CVS version example): 2004-05-24 12:57:44 [7] WARNING: Message rejected by bearerbox, no router! 2004-05-24 12:58:40 [7] WARNING: Cannot find SMSCConn for message to , rejected. The message also (in 1.3.1, not in CVS) gets logged as DISCARDED in the access log. However -- and this is the problem -- the application never gets back a FAILED DLR for the message, hence cannot tell whether it should re-send it or not. I've spent some time looking through the code paths in an attempt to figure out what is going on -- comparing sms_router () to deliver_sms_to_queue () suggests that the following patch should fix the behaviour to be consistent: --- bb_boxc.c 16 Feb 2004 19:41:26 - 1.77 +++ bb_boxc.c 24 May 2004 14:05:22 - @@ -223,21 +223,10 @@ mack-ack.nack = ack_buffered; break; case -1: /* no router at all */ - warning(0, Message rejected by bearerbox, no router!); - /* -* first create nack for store-file, in order to delete -* message from store-file. -*/ - mack_store = msg_create(ack); - gw_assert(mack_store != NULL); - uuid_copy(mack_store-ack.id, msg-sms.id); - mack_store-ack.time = msg-sms.time; - mack-ack.nack = mack_store-ack.nack = ack_failed; - store_save(mack_store); - msg_destroy(mack_store); - - /* destroy original message */ - msg_destroy(msg); + mack-ack.nack = ack_failed; + warning(0, No SMSCes to receive message, discarding it!); + bb_smscconn_send_failed(NULL, msg, SMSCCONN_FAILED_DISCARDED, + octstr_create(DISCARDED)); break; } I've tested it here and it has the desired effect (a NACK/DISCARDED DLR gets sent back to the application). -1 on the patch, first of all. The problem can be described as follows: your client sends a msg which (in case the smsc link is in dead state) can not be transported. Kannel treads this msg as untransportable and hence the mack-ack.nack = ack_failed _is_ send to your client application (smsbox in the usualy case). Your argumentation that there is no FAIL DLR that gets back transported to the the application layer may be reasonable. Kannel descides if a FAIL DLR is created, after it had _tried_ to deliver the msg to a routed smsc link. Which is not the case here. Hence Kannel does never try to transport the msg to an smsc and hence does not create a DLR for it. This is more a semantical problem here. We may descide to threat such unroutable messages with failing DLRs. Any opionions from the others if this is reasonable?! BTW, why isn't it an option to let the smsc links online and let them try to reconnect on their own while you drop of the tcp layer from it? This would cause Kannel to hold up the msgs in the internal quques and dispose them when the link is established again. Where the DLRs will get transported then too. Re: sms concatenation solution
a way more elegant solution is to set the 'alt-dcs' value to the GSM alphabet to force the smsc to use the GSM alphabet and deliver the msg in 7-bit text. Messing in the smpp module to circumvent your specific smsc problem is not a legitime solution IMO.
