Does libpoppler-glib stay at the same soname and "absorb" all poppler
changes behind its ABI?

yes, libpoppler-glib and other front-ends are stable so they'll stay on
their sonames. The soname which is going to be changed is soname of the
core library which is not stable. The packages mentioned above uses the
core library directly so we have to keep the unstable API available.

I'm sorry for not explaining this in the original message.

I'm looking in to efl FTBFS. It seems to be issues on  s390x and ppc64le
related to more strict requirements, checks in gcc 14. I'm investigating them
now and if I will not be able to fix them promptly I will submit a PR with a
workaround( at first look disable altivec on ppc64le and for s390x skipping the
arch for time being assuming that embryo_cc can't be disabled) by tomorrow so
rebuild can continue, while forking on proper fix.

Also, at least efl is FTBFS now, so it can't be rebuilt, and you'll have to
make a poppler-compat package before merging this, if efl isn't fixed by
then.

Does libpoppler-glib stay at the same soname and "absorb" all poppler

poppler soname bump in Rawhide

2023-08-02 Thread Marek Kasik

Hi,

I've prepared rebase of poppler to 23.08.0, which was released today, in
the side tag "f39-build-side-70931". I'm asking you to build your
dependent packages in it and I will merge it to the main buildroot at
Monday (7th of August) just before the branching.

There are several API changes and soname bump of the base library
libpoppler.so.*.

Packages which need to be rebuilt:
 calligra
 gambas3
 gdal
 gdcm
 inkscape
 kf5-kitinerary
 libreoffice
 pdf2djvu
 scribus

If your package still uses the unstable API (headers from
poppler-devel), could you consider to change it to use a stable API in
the future (glib, qt5, C++)? It would mean less work for you and I would
be able to disable the unstable API.

It seems that all these packages build fine with the new poppler so it
should not take much time this time (according to local scratch-build).

Poppler update almost always results in rebuilding TeXLive (due to pdfTeX) too.

I was wondering how the ‘bootstrap’ build is done when that happens.
What magic incantations does spot (cc’ed) typically invoke for that,
is it somewhere documented?

poppler soname bump in Rawhide

2023-02-03 Thread Marek Kasik

Hi,

I've prepared rebase of poppler to 23.02.0, which was released
yesterday, in the side tag "f38-build-side-62722". I'm asking you to
build your dependent packages in it and I will merge it to the main
buildroot at Monday (6th of February) just before the branching.

I take it that packages that use only, e.g., the Qt binding, do not have to

pdfpc depends on poppler-glib but failed the mass rebuild so won't build
in the side tag either. I'll look into it once the FTBFS bug has been
filed and update accordingly.

cups-filters's been rebuilt in side tag as cups-filters-1.28.9-5.fc35.

I removed the build requirement for poppler-devel, since it is no longer
needed (all stuff is now covered by poppler-cpp-devel).

You probably don't have all the changes required for the Qt 5 port covered.

The Debian package:
https://packages.debian.org/sid/utils/diffpdf
has a patch against the last upstream version to make it support Qt 5.

But in the long run, I think switching to the maintained fork is the way to

I believe that Jan Grulich (Cc'd to this email) is working on bringing
Qt6 into Fedora now[1], so it'd be great if we could coordinate that so
Poppler gets its Qt6 frontend enabled too.

poppler soname bump in rawhide

2021-01-11 Thread Marek Kasik

Hi,

I've prepared rebase of poppler to 21.01.0 in the side tag
"f34-build-side-35737". I ask you to build your dependent packages in it
and I will ask to merge it to main branch next Tuesday (19th of January).
Let me know if you won't have time for that or there will be some other
circumstances where I can help.

There are several API changes and soname bump of the base library
libpoppler.so.*.

I've also removed the Qt4 frontend which we've maintained for
compatibility. Relevant package maintainers were contacted and some of
them already switched to Qt5.

Upstream removed poppler-cairo.pc and poppler-splash.pc since it
considers those APIs pure internal. It is better to use poppler-glib or
poppler-qt5.

Btw, if your package still uses the unstable API (headers from
poppler-devel), could you consider to change it to use a stable API
(glib, qt5, C++)? It would mean less work for you and I would be able to
disable the unstable API.

poppler soname bump in rawhide

2020-07-10 Thread Marek Kasik

Hi,

I've prepared rebase of poppler to 0.90.0 in the side tag
"f33-build-side-25167". I ask you to build your dependent packages in it
and I will ask to merge it to main branch next Friday (17th of July).

There are several API changes and soname bump of the base library
libpoppler.so.*.

Btw, if your package uses the unstable API (headers from poppler-devel),
could you consider to change it to use a stable API (glib, qt5, C++)? It
would mean less work for you.

Also, if your package still uses qt4 frontend, try to use another one
since this was removed in upstream and we have it just as a backup
solution which I plan to remove in next rebase (the one for Fedora 34).

I'll notice corresponding maintainers separately.

poppler soname bump in rawhide

2020-01-06 Thread Marek Kasik

Hi,

I'm going to rebase poppler in rawhide to poppler-0.84.0 at the
beginning of next week.

There are several API changes and soname bump of the base library
libpoppler.so.*.

Here is scratch-build of poppler-0.84.0:

https://koji.fedoraproject.org/koji/taskinfo?taskID=40194709

Btw, if your package uses the unstable API (headers from poppler-devel),
could you consider to change it to use a stable API (glib, qt, C++)?
Also, if your package still uses qt4 frontend, try to use another one
since this was removed in upstream and we have it just as a backup
solution for the time being (and its maintaining costs time).

I'll backport/fix simple issues in the dependent packages and rebuild
them together with the rebase (e.g. the one with GlobalParams being
unique ptr now).

Hi,

I've already pushed the change to rawhide at night. The only
problems
are LibreOffice and GDAL now. They don't build from source even
without
the rebase of poppler.
I'm looking at the GDAL now and I see that Caolan has pushed new
LibreOffice to rawhide.

Any news on gdal? This breaks three of the Fedora Spins: Astronomy,
Robotic and Scientific. So please fix this asap! And please
coordinate that better next time, poppler is known to break things…
Pushing that before branching (and mostly without announcement,
because there was no time to test) was not a good idea :(

Thanks for raising.  Asking for Fedora Scientific - should I comment out
packages which needs gdal?

There is a PR open for gdal:

The point of announcing an impending soname bump is to give your
downstreams time to adapt to it. Announcing it and doing it the same day is
not helpful and forces your dependents to react immediately. Please provide
at least a few days' response time before pushing soname bumps in the
future.

Poppler developers changed the model they use for releasing.
All releases should be considered stable from now so even the odd ones.

Also, if your package use the unstable API (headers from poppler-devel),
could you consider to change it to use a stable API (glib, qt, C++)?
This would allow us to not ship the headers and rebase to the newest
poppler versions whenever we want not just in Rawhide.

If you already have everything prepared, perhaps it's worth doing the

going to be branched off of rawhide on August 20, which would only leave
one day for rebuilds before the branching.

poppler soname bump in rawhide

2012-06-22 Thread Marek Kasik
Hi,

I plan to rebase poppler in rawhide to poppler-0.20.1 at the end of next
week.
There are several API changes (new functions + 1 move of a private
function to public section) and 1 soname bump (libpoppler.so.25 to
libpoppler.so.26).

Regards

Marek

poppler soname bump in rawhide

2011-04-01 Thread Marek Kasik
Hi,

I plan to rebase poppler in rawhide to poppler-0.17.0.
There are several API changes and 2 soname bumps (libpoppler.so.13 to
libpoppler.so.14 and libpoppler-glib.so.6 to libpoppler-glib.so.8).
You can test it against your package with this scratch-build:
http://koji.fedoraproject.org/koji/taskinfo?taskID=2966806
I'll do chain-build of poppler and packages requiring it next Friday
(8th of April).

Regards
