[digitalradio] Stealing the N0UK/Ping Jockey Central Idea ? Need programmer

2007-04-25 Thread Andrew O'Brien
I corresponded with Chris N0UK about stealing his cgi that he uses to
create the very useful service for JT65A terrestrial users (and other
pages for MS/EME) . He was nice enough to offer to share his code with
me but I realized there was still too much work for a non-programmer
like me. I don't have the C knowledge that would be needed, nor do I
have a whole lot of experience in creating cgi scripts.

I wonder though, would the type of page he has created at
http://www.chris.org/cgi-bin/jt65talk be useful to digitalradio
members looking for activity for other digital modes, not JT65 or
FFSK441? The DX Cluster is getting little use these days and I do
take it down occasionally during thunderstorms. Chris' concept would
reside on my web site's host server not on my PC locally, so it would
be down less . My web site has unlimited traffic limit and is high
speed.

If anyone has the requisite programming skills to create something
akin to what Chris has created, I would be happy to host it and
promote it via the email group.

There are other html post-get type of pages that collect DX cluster
spots, I'm looking to replicate the more interactive aspect of Chris'
service for the Olivia, Hell, Dominoex, PAx2 users at Digitalradio.

I'm certainly willing to help out. What's his code written in, what's
he using for a database, and what database and tools are available on
your web server (ColdFusion, ASP, etc)?

It mostly comes down to the tools/environment you have available on your
web site: For example, Joe N8FQ knows PHP -- I, on the other hand, know
no PHP but have written a ton of ColdFusion in the past few years.
Chris' page looks very simple, and should be quite easily do-able for
somebody who know the tools you have available in your web environment.

Probably better to put it on your site (once it's finished of course). The ad
says it supports PHP, so that's most of what it requires right there.

Make a text file with a .php extension, containing the following line:
?php phpinfo(); ?

Upload it to you host and then open it in your browser. Two bits of info on the
resulting page are important:

1. the version of PHP, mainly if it's version 4.x or 5.x (my dev box runs 5.x,
but I think the script will run on 4.x)
2. whether or not DBA support is enabled. It needs to be for the script to work
as it is written (it uses the Berkeley DB lib, specifically version 4.2)

Given that, it should be deployable without much effort.

[digitalradio] JT65A SNR - How Low?

2007-04-25 Thread Tony
All:

After several weeks of testing, I think it's fair
to say that JT65 seems to have the ability to
decode weaker signals than what we're used to with
other modes. It would be interesting to see how
much of an advantage it has.

The decode threshold seems to be about 13db better
than others when noise testing with PathSim (no
ionospheric simulation), but the question is
whether the software can accurately measure SNR or
at least come close.

Does anyone know if the SNR measurements are
accurate? Are there any flaws using this method to
measure SNR? The program uses Gaussian white noise
to simulate SNR ratios through a 3khz passband
filter.

Thanks,

Tony KT2Q

Thanks to tremendous work of Joe N8FQ, we now have a new method of

but our new page should be used for ALE, Olivia, PAX, Dominoex, SSTC,
digital voice, Hell, Chip, and more. I already stirred up some USA to

It is currently under test mode but fully functional, after Joe has
finished his masterpiece it will be moved to my web site.

Re: [digitalradio] Re: The state of HF digital modes

2007-04-25 Thread Jose A. Amador

What I think is that we cannot measure both the speed and the roll of a
screwball...When there are too many variables playing, it is hard to
discern, at least, quickly.

Pactor III is undoubtely better thought, but not much different in
performance at low SNR's. Having no adventages, P II may do as well.
At high SNR's, Pactor 3 is hard to beat in 2.4 kHz bandwidth.

There is a compromise between speed and reliability, which, using FEC
and ARQ, adds latency.

Compromises are speed, reliability, bandwidth and low power. You just
cannot have it all. I did not mention cost, but undoubtely, is also a
factor.

Jose, CO2JA

earlier postalot of factors involved in best...speed,
bandwidth, robustness (not a real word), sensitivitity, legality,
availability, popularity, lack of popularity, impact on other hams,
