Is there a reason we can't sart some sort of campaign to eliminate wall warts. I have 8 of these things laying on my desk each producing a different voltage for a divice that could easily operate at 12 volts with the addition of a tiny internal circuit costing a few cents at most, and probably less than the hated wart.there is a useless and tangle of wires. since I already have a big 12volt supply and distribuiton panel. it'd be nice to eliminate this dangerous clutter. how does one approach some international standards organization to cure the plague of wall warts? 73 Harv, N9AI/AI9NL On 1/30/07, Brett Owen Rees VK2TMG [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: I had an old HP Omnibook 133 MHz (I think it was a model 800) machine that ran just fine on 12V. Re: [digitalradio] Re: HF Packet BBS?
my view is that, while we were screwing around trying to make an HF packet messageing system a reality, the time and money would have been better spent developing community wide wireless systems operated by hams for the benefit of their communities and neighbors. using public community brad casting organizations as a model. if we'd done that, hams today would be delivering free internet services on city, county, and state wide basis(but probably not under the aegis of their ham tickets. but contributing technical expert ice. as our licenses mandate. but instead, we diddle around with HF packet and religious aguments about morse code. today the 802.11b/g equipment necessary to acomplish the task is available for pennies at those stores, whose name can not be spoken. and we're still flogging each other with No-code lectures. so what if its consumer electronics nobody on earth knows how to run it better than us. 73 Harv, N9AI[EMAIL PROTECTED] On 1/16/07, KV9U [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: It is too bad that packet could not have advanced with new technology to make it work well on HF. In order for it to be able to work under many conditions, it needed to have the agility to change baud rates/packet sizes to match those conditions and it was really only designed for VHF and for something very close to the MUF on HF. The other problem seemed to be that when the internet moved to e-mail routing, the hierarchy system of packet was much less useful since it could only go to a home bbs. If they could have extended the system to work with e-mail too, you would have had a system that had some real value. As it stands now, there is no system out there that uses amateur radio links to get to other hams since the shutting down of the old Winlink system which only used amateur radio links and replacing it with the mostly internet based Winlink 2000 system. So we have gone from one extreme to another with no balanced approach that I think is needed so we have access to the best of both worlds. 73, Rick, KV9U Mark Milburn wrote: Hi Rick.. You understand it exactly right. There are a few HF users, but most of the product of our efforts are VHF stations running bulletin boards who receive the messages by VHF nodes which are part of the HF packet station setup. We're just a bunch of stubborn folks who think that packet radio ought to be done by radio. When the hop-skip-jump of the early years of packet radio started going away because antenna sites were lost and nodes were not maintained, HF radio started replacing the VHF links where possible. It is (IMHO) a losing battle we are waging, but since internet packet has not developed a routing system to deliver personal messages it has a huge flaw in it, in my thinking at least. The internet users say just don't send personals, send your message as a bulletin. But that defeats the purpose in my view and makes it less attractive. On the other hand, internet has some advantages...speed and ability to send larger messages. It's all in your point of view. I started out with packet back in the early years and loved it, and still love the system that will allow me to read bulletins, but also to reply with a personal question or comment where appropriate...and also to send personal messages to friends I have developed over the years. 73 Mark KQ0I Des Moines, IA

While it does have a pretty steep learning curve, anyone who was used to the old DOS way of doing things can pick it up pretty quickly. But all things are not equal. While there is certainly some excellent amateur radio software for LINUX, and more coming out all the time, there simply isn't the wealth of development going into that area to produce programs that are truly competitive with what exists for Windows. Add that to the problem of compiling the programs and finding the necessary parts for assembling them, it is too early in the lifespan of the OS to expect that level of competition. to howard and the rest ... I only objected to the label cultisT. Linux is not a religious experience for me. Like everyone else, I started with MS Windows I just got sick of shelling out money and time. Money I'd rather invest in rigs and time I'd rather spend on the air. Linux helped me acheive that end. I guess a better lable might be zealot. my start on LINUX was a bit easier. I was able to aquire several computers from friends, neighbors, and relatives ... all fed up trying to make them work. I left one with windows and put one flavor or another of Linux on the rest. at one time I had SUSE, Mandrake an RED HAT all going in here at the same time. Until I got a decent KVM switch, all those independent monitors raised holy hell with the radio. Today, they all run Debian linux and all share the same monitor keyboard printer and mouse. cuz that works best for me. One machine, does hamradio, another email and correspondence and another is dedicated to photo editing and processing. Keeping tasks on separate machines worked out best for me. I don't say everyone should do it that way. the important thing is, I didn't just toss out windows and start fresh with Linux. few among us are that capable or insightfull. I got a lot of help from experienced users in a number of different online lugs. lots of people were willing to share knowledge and experiences. some of them were hams like me. It even was more intense that our massive 2003 San Diego Fires... where hams were the only communications for about 7 days As Andy said, probably only about 10% of us do EMCOMM But I wish there were more... How do digital modes such as PSK, MFSK and Winlink come into EMCOMM? .. Well actually they all can be quite useful... Modes such as PSK and MFSK and Olivia can get through when most other mechanisms such as SSB or CW

Duane, I do NOT applaude you volunteer efforts. Works such as you perform for free simply allow the officials you elected (aND PAY) to renege on their sworn responsibilities ... which may include raising taxes to support your efforts and buyneeded (but ignored) community services. Hi John and the group, 1) Canada has done away with a formal band and mode plan a few years ago, and, so far it has worked on a voluntary basis. Yah'but ... in marked contrast to their southern cousins, Canadians are rational and civilized beings. How could one expect a voluntary plan to work amid a bunch of cursing, beer swilling, flag swaddled, DX and Contest addicted alligators (all mouth, no ears)? We don't really want an influx of kids in the hobby down here. That would mean we'd have to actually share some of the resources to a productive, educational end. Who can make any money with that? And, whats more, we'd have to watch our language, t'boot. We don't need any snot-nosed kids in here. You know damn well, they'll start asking us to explain all that physics bullshit. I guess we already got enough self indulgent, infantile, old farts to make up the difference, anyway! Who the hell cares how the rest of the world organizes anything! After all, these are AMERICAN frequencies ... We invented Ham Radio, goddammit! My view from the south shore of Gitchee Gummi. Within these mode segments there would befew restrictions on bandwidth, only general regulations on max power, interference etc . 2) As the digital modes have improved, the operation of automatic stations has become less of an issue for those of us who are on the bands regularly. With OLIVIA , for example it is possible to work right on top of a Pactor 3 signal, with little loss of data. There were, in the past, far more automatic stations, with everyone and their trusty PK232MBX running a pactor mailbox on either 40 or 20M . while these could be classed as semi automatic, I know that the answering mailbox QRM'd someone. Sure , some of the less robust modes suffer from pactor QRM, but the new ones seem to work better. I think this argument is well past it's best before date. 3)It is time for a new mail box mode, besides Pactor, which would incorporate other ideas which have been presented already, such as a busy detect protocol which would help eliminate QRM from the automatic stations. The folks who developed Pactor have done so to make money on expensive modems, and it is time for newer technology. If a new ARQ mode was developed which would come close to pactor in terms of speed, I think there would be a migration away from pactor fairly quickly. 4) As a general suggestion, we as a ham community need to re-focus all this energy which is going into regulatory affairs, into developing new hams. The FCC and Industry Canada both know that, if they are patient and don't do anything to encourage interest in ham radio, hams will disappear, and already have started to disappear at an alarming rate, since the average age is fairly old. We have to change our regulations and licensing requirements to attract new blood, and lots of it . There are lots of computer savvy younger folks out there who need to see and hear what our exploits and public services are... 5) The cynic in me thinks that, since lobbyists and governments are the same the world over, the ARRL and the FCC will move at a snail's pace, so not to interupt the expense account luncheons they have come toenjoy so that's my 2 bits worth John VE5MU Need a Digital mode QSO? [digitalradio] Sony-BMG Root-kit
I pass along the following from the Electronic Frontiers Foundation's weekly Newsletter. I don't listen to a lot of CD's on my machine so, I can't say if it affects a Linux box, or not. Seems doubtful. However, since many other members of these lists run Windows equipment, I thought I would pass this excerpt from the EFF newsletter along so that members of the group might be aware. Harv, AI9NL = >From the EFF Newsletter, 11 November 2005 * Are You Infected with Sony-BMG's Rootkit? EFF Confirms Secret Software on 19 CDs San Francisco - News that some Sony-BMG music CDs install secret rootkit software on their owners' computers has shocked and angered thousands of music fans in recent days. Among the cause for concern is Sony's refusal to publicly list which CDs contain the infectious software and to provide a way for music fans to remove it. Now, the Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF) has confirmed that the stealth program is deployed on at least 19 CDs in a variety of genres. The software, created by First 4 Internet and known as XCP2, ostensibly protects the music from illegal copying. But in fact, it blocks a number of legal uses--like listening to songs on your iPod. The software also reportedly slows down your computer and makes it more susceptible to crashes and third-party attacks. And since the program is designed to hide itself, users may have trouble diagnosing the problem. Entertainment companies often complain that fans refuse to respect their intellectual property rights. Yet tools like this refuse to respect our own personal property rights, said EFF staff attorney Jason Schultz. Sony's tactics here are hypocritical, in addition to being a security threat. If you listened to a CD with the XCP software on your Windows PC, your computer is likely already infected. An EFF investigation confirmed XCP software on 19 titles, but it's far from a complete list. Sony-BMG continues to refuse to make such a list available to consumers. Consumers can spot CDs with XCP by inspecting a CD closely, checking the left transparent spine on the front of the case for a label that says CONTENT PROTECTED. The back of these CDs also mention XCP in fine print. You can find pictures of these and other telltale labeling at http://www.eff.org/IP/DRM/Sony-BMG/ . Music fans should protect themselves from this stealth attack on their computer system, said EFF Senior Staff Attorney Fred von Lohmann. We're considering whether the effect on the public, or on EFF members, is sufficiently serious to merit EFF filing a lawsuit. If you satisfy the following criteria, we would like to hear from you: 1. You have a Windows computer; 2. First 4 Internet's XCP copy protection has been installed on your computer from a Sony CD (for more details, see our blog post referenced above or the SysInternals blog, http://www.sysinternals.com/blog/2005/10/sony-rootkits-and- digital-rights.html); 3. You reside in either California or New York; and 4. You are willing to participate in litigation. We have not made a final decision about filing any legal action, but we would like to hear from music fans who have been harmed by the Sony-BMG rootkit copy protection technology. Perhaps there is an update, revision, or newer program available offering the same functionality and resources in a smaller and faster package. Have you Google'd yet? About the only thing I can think of from what you've given us, is to attach the files in question to and email message and send them to yourself with the 1st (original) computer. I'm using the Mozilla/Firefox browser on a Linux system. If you are using a different sort of browser, you may have to look around a bit. Surely, the cache is there someplace, and you should be able to clear it. The Cache is a part of the internet protocol and every user browser has one. For Firefox click Edit (in the troolbar at the top of the screen)--Preferences --Privacy-- Click the clear button next to cache. You might also want to clear your history file. Same path, same procedure. But, try just the cache first. This will get rid of locally stored information, that may be old and/or non-functional. Re: [digitalradio] ARRL forwarding tagged as spam.
Hi Andy Below, a copy of an Email I sent to Barry J. Shelley, N1VXY, Chief Financial Officer and Business Manager, ARRL, Inc. on September 1 ... just a day or two after they announced their new service. Seems my apprehension was well grounded. Harv === My note to Barry J. Shelley, N1VXY, Chief Financial Officer and Business Manager, ARRL, Inc Dear Mr. Shelley In the past, I have dropped service from several ISP's precisely because of the filters they applied to my inbound mail and which you intend to use now. The problem is this: One man's SPAM is another man's political correspondence. Since I am a left-winger, a freethinker, an avowed and confirmed atheist, and a HAM, t'boot, I receive a goodly volume of email that other folks might consider offensive. Yet, I consider most of it to be thought provoking, issue oriented, and insightful. Since the [EMAIL PROTECTED] address is a simple forwarding service, it is doubtful there will be any opportunity for me to tune the filters applied to my inbound mail. My GMail account, to which your forwarding service is directed, provides those filters that are tuneable to my specific needs. On the rare occasions when I do use POP mail, I have my own filters installed locally. And, they all function quite well. Thank you! I have no need for you, or anyone else, to monitor the kind of mail I receive, or its source ... to decide what is fit for me to read and what is not. I am an adult ... 63 years old. I am more offended by your efforts to shelter me and shield me from what YOU deem to be an offensive message, than I am by any explicit language or political invective that message may contain. I am more offended by your efforts to shield me from viagra and boob job ads, than I am by their content. I am more offended by your effort to shield me from the Nigerian free money offers, than I am by the idiot who sent me the message. (In fact, these money offers give me more of a hard-on than the Viagra! :-) I can do all this for myself. I have a delete key. Thank you ... but, again, NO! Thank you! Why is it that people will yell so loudly over what they perceive to be SPAM in their email, and then walk 1/2 mile to their RFD postal mailbox, carry home an arm load of Junk Mail which they toss in the trash ... without a whimper ... when the expense and effort entailed in its delivery is exponentially greater than that expended on SPAM? As to virus protections: Much of this problem is engendered by organizations, such as the ARRL, when they actively promote the Micro$oft computing monoculture by proclaiming in their advertisements for CD's, etc., that Windows 98, or better is required ... even when said CD contains nothing more than text or .pdf files, all easily readable with Open Source systems such as Linux and BSD. The ARRL could make a tremendous contribution to both the Ham Radio AND computing communities by promoting Open Source systems with the same effort and energy they give to promoting the Micro$oft monolith. Time for HAMs (at very least) to get off the M$ tit! Thanks for the opportunity to vent ... once again 73 Harv Nelson, AI9NL Washburn, Wisconsin http://hamshack-hack.sourceforge.net/ PS: Just had an opportunity open and read some of my Junk Mail ... Thanks so much for sharing my membership and other personal information with the US Bank National Association ND of Fargo, ND! What frequency do those guys use for their nets? Hopefully, they won't sell my email addresses. That might make additional filtering of my emails necessary. HN On 10/5/05, Andrew J. Re: [digitalradio] ARRL forwarding tagged as spam. (a bit OT)
On 10/6/05, John Becker [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Good points Harv. But I fail to see why anyone would use such an address as their primary email address. Matter of personal choice ... I have other addresses I use for other purposes. My ISP (sitting across the room from me) is set up in such a way that if I alter my return address in any way from what it is the ISP will kick it right back to me without sending it out. The point of my note to ARRL was that filtering control had been usurped and no chance given to tune the filters to individual needs. There is also many many ISP's and IP address that are blocked from this ISP for to reason of spaming. As part of my personal spam control I block *ALL* mail coming direct from any web based email service ( yahoo, hotmail, gmail) Including ARRL dot net and the list goes on Reason, 99.999% of these on line have an email account and address with their ISP Again, you PERSONALLY have control of YOUR filters. That is as it should be. The [EMAIL PROTECTED] does NOT allow this option. It is imposed by fiat from a club functionary ... a corporate interdict ... having no recourse or appeal. It may soon be the law of the land that you CAN NOT alter your return address... That will stop a lot of spam as well as hate mail. One mans spam is another guys commercial message. Hate mail in one mans eyes, is a love note in the eyes of another. We are all adults with logically reasoning minds (I hope). I'm willing to let you make those spam/investment lead and hate mail/love note decisions for yourself ... if you will allow me the same privilege. You have a delete key. Use it. You now know how to build your own rules for your own filters and firewalls. Share them with folks of like mind. But, don't impose them on me without giving me, at very least, the option to opt out. Making something illegal seldom stops the activity. It often encourages, and in some cases, even promotes those same activities. Sorry guys for being off topic Why? Re: [digitalradio] Re: Too much power and courteous notifiication - how/if
Hi Gang! Maybe someone could set up an online Waterfall Gallery with screen shots of the most offensive splattering sigs posted (complete with callsigns) for all to see. It'd be neat to use some thing like KPSK with its multi-channel copy to show the same conversation going on in 4 or 5 different places. For me, this whole High power thing is just one more example of testosterone poisoning in the Amateur Community. That syndrome has the effect of allowing the brain to migrate to the area of the testicles ... then the head becomes just a knot of surplus fat that keeps the spinal cord from unraveling. Maybe we could co-opt some of the stuff from the Monster Truck crowd ... the bigger the tires, the smaller the IQ Have you ever noticed that these guys who will be heard, usually have the least to say? If you've got something of substance to say, all you'll need is a whisper ... and all ears will be turned your way. 73 Harv, AI9NL On 6/24/05, Jerry [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Paul, I completly agree with you on keeping PSK31 a low power mode. Have had near 2000 contacts on PSK231 over four years running 15 to 20 watts output. Here is a quote from an article by Steve Ford WB8IMY who writes for QST and mostly about Digital modes. The Future I don't think it is a coincidence that many new PSK31 users are running low power, often with indoor antennas. Since PSK31 has such excellent weak-signal performance, hams who've been off the air because of antenna restrictions or RFI problems (or both!) are now finding a new way to enjoy the hobby once again. It's common to read: Running 20 W to an indoor dipole… Amateurs who enjoy low-power QRP operating for the sake of QRP itself are also finding excitement in PSK31. Although it is certainly feasible to operate QRP phone, the tradition has been to use CW for greatest efficiency. Now PSK31 offers a new QRP mode that rivals CW's performance. Hams are buying used Pentium laptops (with sound capability) and taking them to the great outdoors to run PSK31 with QRP SSB rigs. My guess is that you'll hear more than a few PSK31 signals next month during Field Day. PSK31 was in the right place at the right time. Amateur Radio was in need of a jumpstart in 1999, something to bring people back on the air and help restore the long-lost sense of wonder. Because the majority of amateurs already owned computers with sound cards, their risk and investment in PSK31 was essentially zero. All they had to do was download the software and fashion a couple of cables. If they tried PSK31 and didn't like it, little was lost. Note where he mentions a new QRP mode! Monitored one station last week, did not write down the call but he was running a 400 watt Amp on PSK31, mentioned that he wanted to make sure his signal was heard after the other station asked him why he was running 400 watts. Lets not start Power Wars on PSK or any digital mode like 20 meter SSB has become. 73, Jerry K0HZI The K3UK DIGITAL MODES SPOTTING CLUSTER AT telnet://208.15.25.196/ More info at http:///www.obriensweb.com Yahoo! Re: [digitalradio] 10 meter mode
Might well be your own computer system, monitor, or printer, or scanner, or other device putting out a timing signal. Maybe even your mouse. Some times peripheral devices are rich in harmonics. Check up the band and see if you hear the same sort of stuff every 20 khz, or so. It could be a power supply ... even one of those wall warts. I have yet to hear W1AW BROADCAST any information which could not have been distributed more quickly, efficiently, and effectively in other media. If CW were removed from our licensing system requirements, as the rest of the world seems to be doing, then there would be no need for at least 2/3 of their BROADCAST time. The arguments/rationale for W1AW BROADCASTS are as bogus as those of K1MAN. Both are equally disruptive, unnecessary, and non-productive. They should be treated with equal justice. You can get to the download page here (scroll down) http://sourceforge.net/projects/hamshack-hack/ Harv's Hamshack Hack: Is a remaster of the KNOPPIX distro for Amateur Radio Operators (Hams) who have no prior experience with LINUX. It Provides a complete OS, software for hobby, web, and word tasks. All contained in an .iso file ready to burn to CD. The file, hamshack-05.iso is a 528 megabyte image file which, when burned to a CD will give you a bootable CD system. The download takes about 2 1/2 hours on my 512K DSL link ... Longer on slower links, less on faster links. If you are running a 56K dialup (or less), please don't attempt this download ... it will take days to complete. Just send me your name and address, and I'll burn a copy for you. I hope to have a proper web page running by weekend. Please send word of bugs and bombs. 73 Harv, AI9NL The K3UK DIGITAL MODES SPOTTING CLUSTER AT telnet://208.15.25.196/ Yahoo! Re: [digitalradio] Re: Hamshack Hack v.05 available at SourceForge
Hi Jerry, Hmmm... /dev/hda1 is your C:\ drive in Windows, I think. Evidently, that is where the Persistent file got writ ... to the root partion of that drive. Usually, when knoppix boots up, it looks in a file called /ect/skel to find the information it needs to build the knoppix home directory and desktop (that's all those Icons I put up there ... they are in /etc/skel on the CD.) If you've built a persistent directory and its been located during the home=scan process, I guess what knoppix wants to know is, which one do you want me to try to use ... etc/skel or the persist stuff. The / comes out on shift 7 and the \ just hit the - (minus) key next to the zero. Do a Google on German Keyboard layout for more info. All this will pass in a few days when Knoppix 3.8.1 comes out and I make a new build. (I hope :-) 73 Harv, AI9NL On Apr 2, 2005 11:25 AM, Jerry [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: --- In digitalradio@yahoogroups.com, Harv Nelson [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Hi Len, Check out the Persistent Directory stuff Click on Tux, the little penguin on the task bar at the bottom of the screen Pick Configure --Create a Persistent Disk Image. You can be more specific than scan to help knoppix out a bit. See the cheat-codes at the web site http://hamshack-hack.sourceforge.net/ or check the cheat-codes file on your CD. Re: [digitalradio] Re: Hamshack Hack v.05 available at SourceForge
Hi David, That checksum you seek is in the little md5sum.txt (about 50 bytes) sitting next to that 528 meg file. I don't know what burner you're using. I think NERO reports a checksum before you tell it to go ahead and make a new coaster. Compare that number to the one in the md5sum.txt file, if they come up the same, all should go well. I did a practice download here. The checksum I got failed. I burned it anyway, and the disk did seem to run OK (if a little bumpy) It took about 6 hours to UP load the thing. There is a better than even chance that an error occured there. 6 hours upload, then 2 1/2 download ... we are moving a lot of bits around. More than enough time for a few of them to get lost or find new friends. I don't know which of the mirrors you used to download. I used one in Ireland, just to be cute. SourceForge may experience some of these same problems shuffling all those bits around to its different mirrors. Who said life was gonna get easier! :-) Only more fun! Hey, I got plenty more folks to blame now. Let me know what checkum or md5sum your burner program gives. If its the same as the one mine gives on the downloaded file here, then I suppose something happened on the UPload side and I'll have to do it again. Thanks for taking time and wasting a little bandwidth with me. 73 Harv, AI9NL On Thu, 31 Mar 2005 02:58:45 -, wd4kpd [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Harv, AI9NL downloaded today burned cd, but programs would not even run from cd. i dont know how to do a chksum, but downloading other .iso have never given me any problems. could be the cd burning process, but again have never had any problems with it. i will try download again. how do i chk the .iso ? david wd4kpd The K3UK DIGITAL MODES SPOTTING CLUSTER AT telnet://208.15.25.196/ Yahoo! Hi Don, Lay hands on a KNOPPIX CD (Linux) and give 'Audacity' a spin. Its a multichannel audio transcription and editing program. If you have a high speed link, download the .iso here http://www.knoppix.org/ You may also find the CD in your local book store as a part of some Linux book or Distro.
