There is not yet that much out there about the 2007 version. Here is my
personal link collection. I think you might already know most of them, but
who knows? (:

SharePoint Resources
http://www.heathersolomon.com/blog/articles/Resources.aspx

The Official MSDN Team Blog
http://blogs.msdn.com/sharepoint/

SharePoint Screencasts
http://www.sharepoint-screencasts.com/

Sharepoint BUZZ
http://www.sharepointbuzz.com/

I also liked this book, The Definitive Guide.
http://www.oreilly.de/catalog/9780596529581/

On design and IA questions, be sure to have a look at general portal
resources and those from other vendors too. Look for SAP Netweaver, BEA
Portal, IBM Websphere etc.
There is much insight about visual design, navigation, portlet
integration, page layout etc which is applicable regardless which
technical platform you are going to use, but posted in context of those
platforms instead of general portal design keywords.

So here are some links on that:

Sharepoint also has it's own Frontpage inside called Sharepoint
Designer:
http://office.microsoft.com/nb-no/sharepointdesigner/HA101672591044.aspx

I also have a question: is it true that Sharepoint 2007 doesn't
support cross-publishing? Is there a way around this limitation?
It's an important function and there should be a way to do this
after all.
As a general view on SP2007 this tells me that SP2007 is for
intranets whith focus on collaboration but not corporate websites
where market communication is the main goal.

any views on this?

Re: [IxDA Discuss] good examples of faceted navigation?

2007-12-05 Thread Alexander Baxevanis
Haven't seen any particularly memorable instance of faceted
navigation, but there is something that I often find annoying with
many implementations: it is impossible or very hard to get a list of
for example, *all* of a class of products that are being sold in an
e-shop. (i.e. to get a list of all laptops on sale, regardless of
brand, price etc.)

Why would I want to do that? Because quite often I don't know what I'm
looking for, or I'm searching for something that I can't quite fit in
the available categories etc. (this may be exaggerated by the fact
that I'm not a native english speaker, and I didn't grow up in the UK,
so for example I'm not familiar with the terminology used for
household goods here) In these cases, a pair of human eyes (combined
with good graphic design) can be the best search engine. Don't
underestimate the power of Visual Search :)

Re: [IxDA Discuss] Suitable icon for freeze

2007-12-05 Thread Pedro Soares Neves
It depends of the quality of the FREEZE.

Freeze may refer to:

Freezing, the physical process
Freeze (breakdance move), the halting of all movement in a clever
position
Freeze (computing), when computer software becoming unresponsive
Freeze (exhibition), an influential art show which established the
Young British Artists
Freeze (software engineering), a period of stricter rules for
changing the software
The Freeze, a punk rock band from Boston, Massachusetts
The Freeze (UK), a punk band from Edinburgh, Scotland, pre-Cindytalk

Freeze drying, a method of rapidly removing moisture from food
products
Freeez, a British dance music band, known for their 1983 hit
"A-E-I-O-U"

But the icon must be something static and white/ blue. :)

smartest and most demanding companies in the world. Since its founding
in 1999, HUGE has developed a methodology and culture that combine the
most relevant aspects of research, design and technology to grow client
businesses. Clients include IKEA, JetBlue Airways, Adult Swim, Amnesty
International, and Scholastic. The company is headquartered in New York
with offices in Los Angeles and Sweden.

Experience Leads play a critical role at HUGE. They are the nerve
center of our development methodology and take a large share of
responsibility for the success of the product or website. The Experience
Lead's mission is to deliver both power and pleasure to end users. This
involves taking a leadership role in key stages of research, product
definition, and design. In addition, Experience Leads mentor Interaction
Designers and other team members, helping to evolve the HUGE way of

The HUGE process (http://www.hugeinc.com/process/) starts with
development of the product's conceptual model--understanding exactly who
the users are and describing and ranking their goals and behaviors.
Every project at HUGE includes substantial time for research and
experimentation, phases that are conducted mainly by interaction
designers.

SPECIFIC CHALLENGES FOR HUGE EXPERIENCE LEADS:

* Select research processes and other tools, and participate
in user testing or fieldwork as needed

* Partner with Senior Clients to determine product's mandate,
feature set, and measures of success

* Develop user personas, scenarios of use, task analysis,
interaction models, and experience briefs

* Oversee creation of mock ups, functional prototypes, and
other artifacts

* Collaborate with HUGE teammates and HUGE clients to ensure
that your great ideas survive the development process

* Be a part of an award-winning team, contribute to our
process and shared knowledge

* Humanize everything you touch: help users experience the joy
of discovery

BASIC INGREDIENTS:

* 5+ years experience creating interfaces, large scale
websites, or appliances

* Desire to prove you can lead a team producing the best work
in the industry

* Full understanding of how to apply the methodologies of
interaction design and user research to website and product
development

* Tendency to lose sleep over how to remove the need for
annoying "Cancel" buttons

*   Proven client management skills

* Solid writing and visual communication skills

* Familiarity with usability heuristics and relevant HCI
literature

* Knowledge of Visio or other tools for generating wireframes
and behavior specifications

* Ability to play nicely with other highly talented types

[IxDA Discuss] CHI 08

2007-12-05 Thread Jeff White
This is pretty far off, but anyone planning on attending CHI 08 in
Florence, Italy? http://www.chi2008.org/

Jim Ungar (IxDA member) and I will be giving a few different talks
(one in a workshop, and one case study presentation) about using
studio approach to design to facilitate UCD in Agile software
development environments.

If anyone is planning on going, let me know and let's think about
getting together one evening. Registration will open next week, I
believe. I'm looking forward to this conference, to say the least. CHI
seems to be incorporating more "traditional" design into it's
activities, as well as more focus on industry practices as opposed to
an academic/research focus. I think this approach might appeal more to
the folks on this list.

Arrivederci.

Jeff

Re: [IxDA Discuss] Interaction08

2007-12-05 Thread Dan Saffer
I certainly don't want to defend bad design here, but the nature of an
ad-hoc, member-supported organization like ours is that we simply
can't build all of our tools ourselves. We can build some (like the
new IxDA site), but designing and building, say, a conference
registration and credit card processing system is far more than we can
do with our limited resources, so we have to outsource. And as anyone
who has ever outsourced can tell you, there are trade-offs.

So. Apologies for the less than optimal design of the RegOnline
system. It met our needs for this first conference but we can always
explore new systems in the future if it doesn't meet the needs of our
users (you).

Thanks for the feedback,

Dan

When we attended Adaptive Path's UX week conference in DC, they did this
great thing where they organized lunch around interests. And people sign
up for it during the conference... I liked that a lot b/c I was able to
meet people where I normally wouldn't (and I met great people at lunch!
So it worked well). Since Dan is on the conference committee on this one
I thought I'd point out how nice it was in hopes of transferring some
thing that worked from one conference to another.

However, I know this is a volunteer driven effort and we may not have
the infrastructure to do it... and I don't have time to volunteer so you
don't have to respond with an email to guilt trip me, Dave or Josh :)

Exactly. My point was that this is a job description for someone who
will be analyzing data, pure and simple, abstracted away from actual
users and their behaviour.

So, to me, calling this position "User Researcher" is either
misleading or amusing, depending on one's perspective. Since my
original post was made late on a Friday afternoon, I chose the latter.
:)

I respectfully disagree. Conferring the title of "user researcher" on
someone who runs SQL queries all day is, to me, muddling and
diminishing what actual user researchers do. (Note that I occasionally
run SQL queries as part of my work, and have the utmost respect for
people who do this for a living. I just don't think they are doing
user research.)

I do realize that job descriptions and divisions of labour in our
field are usually far from clear. But, I think the line has to be
drawn somewhere, or at some point we will start seeing janitorial
services companies posting job ads for "bathroom experience planners".
:)

I'm actually teaching a class at a school for "Advanced Vocational
Education and Training", on Interactive Design during the time
period that you're here. (It's just a four week introduction and
orientation on the subject.) Would you be interested in giving a
short guest lecture (an hour or so) on what an interface designer
does, and how a typical project progresses?

The school is called "N3P" and is located in the center of Malmö.
The name is a play on the word "Entrepreneur", that only works in
Nordic languages...

PS: if there are others on the list who would be interested in guest
lecturing, you're most welcome.

We are definitely planning on this for lunches and Saturday dinner.
We're also hoping that attendees will use the CrowdVine site to help
coordinate their own informal or formal meetups. The site is in a bit

Re: [IxDA Discuss] A good source for stats on browsers, screen resolution, OS, etc.

2007-12-05 Thread Barbara Ballard
I finally got details on what was going on with these statistics. My
source is Ray from Bango (I think CEO), a mobile ad provider. He said:

"Hitslink produced this report by using data from their analytics
customers. These people operate HTML/PC websites. They say: "You
simply paste a small piece of HTML code on each page you wish to
track statistics on".

The 300 million or so mobile phone browser users (say 50million S60)
can't or don't browse HTML sites. They browse mobile friendly sites
(WAP or XHTML or iMode) which will not have this HTML code in.

Considering that organizations like Bango, Admob, Peperonity,
Vodafone report mobile browser traffic in the billions of pages per
day, most of thse being S40 or S60 its clear that by ignoring non-
HTML sites these stats are misleading and mistaken.

The other headline would be "iPhone users not not seen visiting the
web" becuase the providers of web sites that serve mobile phones
never see them. Or iPhone browsing is only 0.0001% of internet
activity.

It like a survey from a wheatgrass juicing company that supplies
vegetarian restaurants revealling that a survey of people eating
meals served in restaurants they monitored revealed 99% were
vegetarian."

2007-12-05 Thread Pedro Soares Neves
In a multiple screen touch world (as we can see in Jeff H.demo )there
are no sliders, or they exist but they don%u2019t have the format
that we know, the sliding movement it's vital, but the slider as we
know it will be something of the past. Thank you for the mouse
wheel.

Re: [IxDA Discuss] frustation meter

2007-12-05 Thread Pedro Soares Neves
Participation it's the key attitude for knowing the results of your
testing, just overview the users, ask them, make a form, think the
possible deviations of the responses. In the limit make the users
design your product. If not the users just will transform them into
their best personalisation usage levels.

[IxDA Discuss] [SURVEY] IxDA Boston: Do you want to learn (more about) Adobe Flash?

2007-12-05 Thread Lisa deBettencourt
Hi New Englanders! Hope you're all staying warm and dry this week!

Your humble chapter organizers have decided to give you December off from
events so we can organize great stuff for 2008. (not to mention just how
busy we all are this time of year!) One thing currently in the works is...
(drum roll please)... an Adobe Flash for Interactions
Designers training series. But, since we all know that Flash is such a
complex and powerful application, we want to make sure we give you the right
stuff that you can use when you walk out the door. To do that we first need
to understand your level of experience with Flash to build on. We've created
a quick 5 question survey that we think will get us started.

If this series sounds like something you could use and would be interested
in attending, please take a moment to complete our survey:

Thanks!
~IxDA Boston

PS. If you have other comments or feedback about this after completing our
survey, please feel free to email me <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> directly.

Re: [IxDA Discuss] CHI 08

2007-12-05 Thread tripodell
Depends on the size of the company and what you'll be doing. My
company will happily send anyone to a conference if they're going to
speak or present work. But I work for a big company with a very
assertive design/technology culture. They're less willing to just
send people to conferences unless the person going is really going to
get something out of it.
