Hi Andrea, I've started piling this list together so far at uxcommunity.org. Re: [IxDA Discuss] The UX Challenge organizers might be insane
Thank you for your engagement and many serious and sometimes humorous points. OK, here we try to answer some of the questions: IS THIS GENIUS DESIGN? We know that a good and realistic prototype of a system with all the background research etc. can't be done in two days. Therefore we will provide a framework with a specific conflict with context, User research with Personas etc. We will also provide you contact with real users and experts in the domain. Still, it is a hard task to make a successfull system in 2 days, but you are among the best in the world aren't you? THIS IS NAIVE. REALISM PLEASE! A Facebook for peace? An online game to get Palestinians and the Israeli to become friends? To be honest, we really don't know if it's possible, but at least we turned the question around: could this work? We don't think we can make something that actually stops an ongoing war. But, can we make the reconciliation process easier and make it less probable that a new conflict will escalate? WHY WEB? The web is a perfect medium for communicating across borders. People in a conflict area would probably not like to meet face to face, but could they interact through the web? The costs of a web solution could be quite low compared to the possible importance of the outcome. CONFERENCE OR COMPETITION? It is both. We have B.J Fogg, Jesse James Garrett, Todd Zaki Warfel and others giving inspirational talks and guiding you during the making of the prototype. The participants will learn a lot from how the other groups solved the task and the results they came forward with. The competition is to make people extra motivated. ALL the solutions will we published afterwards and discussed so every team will have their chance to show off their work. WHY THE LOCATION? We believe that something completely different from the normal conference location could inspire people to think out of the box. PRICING: Many conferences in the US cost 2000 and upwards. F.ex User interface 13, UXweek etc. At Arctic UX Challenge, dinners and one event is included. The cost of transport will of course be higher than from San Fran to New York, but think about the rest of the world that always have to go to your country to attend conferences ;) Hotel is actually cheaper than most US conference-hotels. We think it is a real pity if great UX Professional can't afford to join us. What about trying to get your team sponsored by one or more companies? We expect a lot of media-buzz on this event, and it will be a unique chance for the sponsoring companies to get their names connected to world-wide-peace, as all the teams and their solutions will be published. IxD VS IA AND OTHER EXTINCT CONFLICTS We are done with this, aren't we? POLAR BEARS We won't harm any polar bears, and we are not going to let them harm you either :) ARE WE INSANE? The last time we looked at a Rorschach inkblot we saw 200 people having the time of their life at the Island of Spitsbergen. They felt they made a difference, they learned a lot AND they had a great time. Best regards, For The UX Challenge team Jostein . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . [IxDA Discuss] Come design ITSME with us
Hi everyone, I wanted to introduce Itsme project to you all and gather your comments and feedback on it, which I think is very important for the project as we are moving on from the initial design phase to the development phase. So, here goes a little about itsme.. Itsme is a new kind of PC that we are designing and developing. It is based on a new metaphor of Stories and venues : organizing information as per the context in which they are generated and needed. We have defined a clear vision of the Itsme interface, with design features etc, and are now moving on to the development phase. Here is a document where you can find more details about the concept, design features including , content management, navigational modalities, information flow management and how we are planning the itsme system architecture. http://www.itsme.it/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2009/02/itsme_cards_screen1.pdf Would appreciate your comments, thoughts, feedback Thanks Nikhil http://www.itsme.it/ Welcome to the Interaction Design Association (IxDA)! Re: [IxDA Discuss] Terms Every IxD Should Know
Getting a glossary together is a great idea, both for Dan's revised book and for the community. I (helped) put together a UI glossary at Yahoo but that has more to do with what elements on the screen (button) are called, for the purposes of consistent translation to 35 other languages. While researching it I did come across some glossaries from MS and a few others, though I don't want to fall into fallacy of equating UI and IxD. Some of the words being suggested here seem to be UX words but not IxD words, which is probably a good thing from the perspective of coming to agreement across subdiscipline on what the terms mean, but it might be worth sometimes indicated when a word is from the core IxD practices or shared/borrowed/encountered on cross-functional teams. On the IA side of the fence, we are working on a skills matrix in which we're trying to inventory a number of the skills and tasks that IAs should be expected to be able to do at various stages of their career. Of course there are variations but we think we can indicate some required and elective skills at various rough levels. The purpose of the exercise is to help hiring managers and job seekers ask for and meet matching expectations. The IxDA may want to do something similar (and the other tribes: usability experts, etc., may wish to do so as well), and we could all compare notes at some point, both on terminology and on skillsets. -xian- Welcome to the Interaction Design Association (IxDA)! Re: [IxDA Discuss] Talk to the Hand: Dan Saffer and gestural interfaces, by Andy Polaine
I wish I could have left Dan's second part of that quote in (or should have). I agree with the second part more than the first part. Designer's are *part* of service design by virtue of the fact that we (mostly) design touchpoints and sometimes the interactions and journeys between those touchpoints. But on that view, designers have always been service designers even before the particular naming of service design as a discipline happened. I don't think that being accidentally part of a service is the same as designing services or being a service designer. There are very important ways of seeing design when you look at design through the service design lens as Dan says and on that I'm in total agreement. But I do think there are specific approaches to service design as a discipline that are new enough and not well-known enough for there to be value in keeping it separately defined at the moment. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Inspired in part by @semanticwill's public release of some of his wireframes, I've put up our prototype for the second release of http://www.dotherightthing.com . This release hasn't gone live yet, but will launch within the next few weeks. http://www.acleandesign.com/2009/02/do-the-right-thing/ I put together the wireframes in Axure. There are a few advanced interactions in there, such as the company search. @pixelyzed asked me, Are your protos always as high fidelity as the DoTheRightThing ones?, which I find interesting. I see these as low fidelity. There is use of color and contrast, but only where ux is concerned. But, I could be wrong! How do your wireframes compare to these in terms of fidelity? Do you use other tools that would have improved on this prototype? Also, if anyone is interested in helping us beta test and populate the new version before release, D me on Twitter, @lorenbaxter. [IxDA Discuss] Using qualifying questions to create a semi-walled garden?
Working on a marketing site for a consumer electronics service. Some customers can get product A; some can get product B; some can get both (due to geographic and technical limitations). There is no clear-cut single qualifying question, but probably 95% accuracy by postal code (zip code). Marketing is pushing for a qualifying question up front that will determine which product you are shown (i.e, you will not be shown the other product). We are pushing for an open site that will promote both products, and give the users the ability to choose, and do qualifying as the first step in ordering. The qualifying info may or may not be able to be stored in a persistent cookie; so the UX might be really awful if you come back and the site keeps asking you where you're from (plus other possible questions). Besides the argument of user control over system control, can you think of any other angles to try and sell this to the marketing folks? I'm certain that it will adversely affect the sales of both products if users have to continuously qualify themselves during the research and decision process. They are quite fixated on performing as much pre-qual up front. thanks Anthony Welcome to the Interaction Design Association (IxDA)! Re: [IxDA Discuss] Using qualifying questions to create a semi-walled garden?
Are you talking qualification by postal code (local), by State or by country? If by State or Country a simply visual representation under each product illustrated could be the answer. The Blue and Red state map of the US during the elections is a good example. People are less likely to choose an item that they are visually shown their country/state doesn't have it; so the error message would be either skipped or at least tolerated more because they have already noticed the map's status information. There may be an issue with generating a whole stack of maps with different yes/no states for each State/Country though! Subsets may be needed to cull the permutations. Re: [IxDA Discuss] Using qualifying questions to create a semi-walled garden?
Identify the ip and re-route. Don't start with a question. I have made good use of stock.xchng (sxc.hu). On the Creative Commons side of things, Compfight is a useful resource for trawling Flickr: http://www.compfight.com Stock Xchng is another: http://www.sxc.hu/ very much along the lines of istockphoto.com Obviously Getty too: http://www.gettyimages.com/ Very specific one on travel brochure Graphic Design from the 1920s and 30s: http://www.travelbrochuregraphics.com/ Australian specific one: http://www.pictureaustralia.org/ One for visual arts: http://www.vads.ac.uk/ These are mostly more arts based, but there is a big list here too: http://www.vraweb.org/resources/diag/digreslist.html Best, Andy Andy Polaine Interaction Experience Design Research | Writing | Education Twitter: apolaine Skype: apolaine http://www.polaine.com http://www.designersreviewofbooks.com http://www.omnium.net.au http://www.antirom.com Welcome to the Interaction Design Association (IxDA)! Re: [IxDA Discuss] List ordering: alphabetical vs. logical?
On Feb 4, 2009, at 10:18 AM, Elizabeth Buie wrote: Alphabetical order is no better than random order if the user does not know what to look for. Alpha order aids in scanning through a list of things with known names, to find the one sought. I disagree that alphabetical is random; it is quite well-ordered by a long-set of standing rules. It is also a means of ordering that people learn, in Western culture, from the day they begin to learn to read. As Chauncey says, it is the way to order when no other order makes sense. Hmm, I would have to disagree with this. Alphabetical *is* better than random order, because human beings don't believe in random order. We always believe that there is a design of some sort (and thus we invented god, thank you Voltaire). And thus if your list of items were random, users would try to make sense of the randomness, to impart a design behind it, to figure out what the heck is going on. To pattern match, if nothing else. Alphabetic order indicates design intent of some sort, and while some users might wish for better design (like their country at the top of the list), at least they won't spend cycles trying to make sense out of what is supposed to have none. And thus they can move forward without worrying that they didn't get it. -- Jim Welcome to the Interaction Design Association (IxDA)!
