Hi Chathrin,
have a look here; http://be-useful.net/
a lot of ordinary things should be more useful;
the elevator is already mentioned here, because of the alarm button which is be
pressed when you lay on it by mistake - there should be a box around...

Betreff: [IxDA Discuss] Unusable things

OK - so we work in the world of digital. Here the affordance is a
perceived one. But what about our real lives?

Here's the thing - I want to start a list of unusable real life
things

1. Elevator buttons: when I press the wrong floor (which is quite the
frequent occasion in my uncaffienated state before 12pm) why can't I
"unpress" my mistake?

2. Toilet doors: why does one open in and the next out. Furthermore -
why wash your hands when you must touch germ-ridden door handles after
the fact? If there is ever a need to have automatic doors - here it
is.

3. Coffee cups without handles: OK - I'm a great lover of style and
aesthetics, however when it burns my hands off...I'd find it more
classy to have a handle and not have tears in my eyes from lifting my
beloved caffeine to my mouth.

[IxDA Discuss] What Other Fields Could UXers "Steal" From?

2009-09-29 Thread Vicky Teinaki
Hi all,

(Shameless plug maybe, but I'd love to tap into the collective IXDA
intelligence )
I recently wrote a post about other fields UXers could 'steal' from
http://johnnyholland.org/2009/09/28/good-ixders-borrow-great-ones-steal/

I've love other people's insight into other fields and texts that UXers
would do well to be aware of. (For example, I know that there is some pretty
cool stuff in performing arts like labannotation, but didn't have enough
information to put it in). From the comments so far I've already found out
that Ithere is much to be had in behavioural economics!

Thanks

Re: [IxDA Discuss] Is there a good reason to require people to idtheir credit card?

2009-09-29 Thread William Hudson
There are many sources for credit card prefixes (as well as check digit
algorithms) for validating credit cards. For example,
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bank_card_number

I think as long as users are clear what cards you accept there is no
need to ask. For me, it is almost always Amex that I have trouble with,
so I check that Amex is listed before I get too far. I have never known
a 'grown-up' MasterCard or Visa not to work. (My daughter has a teen-age
version which is so badly supported by some sites and stores, which say
they accept it and then don't, that she has actually lost her confidence
in using it. Part of this is the bank's fault for changing the name of
the thing so many times.)

Re: [IxDA Discuss] pattern suggestions for personalisation

2009-09-29 Thread Julia Slavin
Hi Jax,

I think that most of modern e-commerce websites allow certain amount
of personalization.

I tend dividing parameters by which it's possible to personalize the
site into two main group - "Not logged in customers" and "Logged in
customers".

Not logged in customers.
For all your visitors you could use data available from your web
statistics and servers logs. For example, without having personal
information about your visitors you still could group them by:
* Language (browser/OS settings)
* Country (IP)
* Flash player version
* Screen resolution
* Date & time
* Referral
* Last visit date
* Keyword referred

Not logged in customers.
If you have a log-in mechanism and store personal information about
your customers, you have almost infinite ways to customize your
website. Depending on your user profiles you could group them by:
* Money spent on your website
* Money left in their wallet
* Level of their loyalty
* Usage frequency
* Last time purchase
* Preferred products
* and many more depending on your website.

Re: [IxDA Discuss] Preferences to show the number of items to display per page

2009-09-29 Thread Nick Dunn
In 37signal's Getting Real book there is a great page titled "Avoid
Preferences":

"Decide the little details so your customers don't have to %u2014
preferences are a way to avoid making tough decisions"

Removing preferences also removes the need to design extra UI, test
additional code, and add additional perceived complexity to your
application.

Perhaps a spot of testing with the users would reveal an optimal
per-page number that works for everyone regardless of the data view?

For example, someone who accidentally leaves the first digit off of

Again, it depends when you're doing your authorization check. If
you're processing immediately during the users' session, you don't

However, lots of purchase systems do a deferred authorization check,
to allow the seller to have a look at the transaction before its put

clearance). In this instance, it's better to ask for the card type to
give you a piece of redundant information for the validity check.

In shopping cart and checkout systems, things are rarely as easy as

Your message immediately brought to mind a comment from Jeff Atwood

"Google is our interface".

I think this sort of thinking is especially pertinent to any site

Clearly a huge generalisation, but it's probably worth remembering
that many users will search your site with Google(other search
engines are available), so your search function is almost always
going to be at best a second resort.

No, but you can detect the error sooner. (Again, it really depends on

Re: [IxDA Discuss] Toward a search dominant wayfinding paradigm (worth it?)

2009-09-29 Thread Alok Jain
I agree with the idea of search being a powerful interface and that
"Google is our interface" idea. Even app launchers like Quicksilver
(OSX) have worked very well and they are fundamentally search.

However there are a few points that make it not so simple

1. From an experience standpoint the difference is same as asking a
customer to go to front desk and ask about something v/s approaching
the customer and introducing yourself. That applies to marketing
messages but also to navigation. Search is more in the category of
asking customer to go to a front desk - I think there is an
impersonal feeling to it.

I looked at Sequio capital example and it just makes me stop and
think what should I do next

2. Recognition v/s recall - Search requires recall of sorts, there
is a decision required on how to form the query and more. Browsing on
the other hand is more on the recognition side.

3. From a business standpoint you do want to make the customer aware
of the products without being dependent on the user asking the right
question because in many case they might not know that a particular
kind of product is offered by Adobe.

I think what will help is a simplification of product listing,
currently it's just a list of product names with every variation,
for e.g. Photoshop CS4 and Photoshop CS4 extended, there are 12
flash related products and so on.I think the customer would need
better guidance.

Re: [IxDA Discuss] Is there a good reason to require people to idtheir credit card?

2009-09-29 Thread Jennifer R Vignone
I think that a part of the reason for asking is to show the user what methods
of payment and types of cards are accepted.
A user may have a few credit cards and this gives them a chance to see which
ones are accepted, and decide which one they want to use.
Not every business accepts all credit cards.
There are also instances where a user may want to use the card for that store
(example would be a Macy's charge card).
I would rather see a list of the cards I can use to see which ones are accepted
and make my decision before entering numbers rather than enter a card number to
find that it isn't accepted.
Also, the credit card selection stage is sometimes grouped with the selection
of PayPal, which doesn't require a card number entry.

Jennifer -

This was mentioned earlier, but of course you need to let customers know
what credit cards you accept well in advance of the checkout. For
example, when we did not used to take Amex on our site, I had companies
contacting me because they had got to the checkout and could not use
their company Amex card. The purchases were large enough that they did
not want to use their personal MasterCard or Visa. We had to arrange
payment through another process (PayPal or similar). Getting all the way
to the credit card dropdown list only to discover that you cannot use
the card in your hand does not make for a good experience!

Re: [IxDA Discuss] Toward a search dominant wayfinding paradigm (worth it?)

2009-09-29 Thread Andrew Hinton
The default browse experience has several simultaneous goals. One of those
goals is to give a visitor some sense of what that site is about and what
can be expected to be found there. It helps orient a visitor and provide
context, whether the 'tabs' get clicked or not.

But the idea that *everything* in that site has to exist on some clickable,
static hierarchy of tree structures is possibly becoming an obsolete notion,
due to the sheer scale of such sites, especially user-generated behemoths
and "we sell everything" e-shops.

In these cases, there's more of a continuum between searching and browsing.

In fact, Search, done well, is essentially dynamic, custom browsing.

Even if I navigate Amazon by clicking categories until I get to a product
list that interests me, it's being generated dynamically. And the deeper I
go, the higher the percentage of links I see that are there uniquely because
of my behavior and product choices. These are all being driven by
sophisticated search queries kicked off by my click-to-browse activity.

Essentially I'm getting at this point: this search vs browse thing is more
and more a false dichotomy. The navigation super-structures are becoming
much more about *utility* than *content* ... such as on Flickr, where the
navigation has much more to do with *what I do with photos* (sort, search,
explore, share, etc) than the categories of photos themselves, which is
mostly being driven by user activity.

Re: [IxDA Discuss] Toward a search dominant wayfinding paradigm (worth it?)

2009-09-29 Thread Andrew Hinton
Good point ... that's why I've been leaning more toward thinking in terms of
Context, which is related to place (and cognitively shares some brain matter
with how we process & navigate physical space), but thinking of this sort of
space in terms of context allows for the fluidity we find in digitally based
experiences.

It also allows us to think in terms of the user's context, which informs
their understanding of (and merges with) how we've arranged, categorized and
named things.

Of course, that's all kind of wishy-washy theoretical talk that I'm afraid
isn't immediately helpful to the kind soul from Adobe who started this
thread :-)

The IxDA has a new local group, IxDA Northern NJ, which meets approximately
once a month in Madison, NJ. Our goal is to facilitate networking and
professional development for user experience professionals in northern New

world and reporting on its implications.

ABSTRACT

As the online world evolves, user behaviors, business models and technical
capabilities that used to be fringe phenomena are moving to the forefront of
the online world and are interacting with each other. We can discuss these
phenomena and how they may affect both the user experience and the business
potential of the online world.
LOGISTICS

We're currently using Meetup for event signups and local announcements.
There is also a new forum for professional discussions. To RSVP for this
event or to see the rest of the abstract and the logistical details, please

Maybe they got discontinued for just this reason?

3. Devices that "beep" for everything. My microwave beeps when I

That's what happens when you remove the buttons and leave controls

Of course, the first thought is "Why can't it be replaced by just
watching the display change?" Then again, the display on my microwave

torched the cat yet, so I must have a good memory.

I just bought a new one tonight. Fortunately Fry's puts a copy of the
instruction manual inside the shelf models, so I could get some sense
of the UI, since they can't plug them in for you to try out due to
fire issues. May I never have to suffer another microwave which makes
me press Power-0-Time-1:00 to cooke something for 1 minute on Hi! I
noticed that some of the mid-range models had a dial rather than a
keypad. Of course, I couldn't try one out to see it it would beep-
beep-beep constantly as I twisted the dial. Probably would have,
though.

[IxDA Discuss] Regarding User Experience Architect profile

2009-09-29 Thread Srinivas Annam
Hello IxDers,

I am following this mailing list for more than a year now and I truly
appreciate the quality of discussions happening here. I get to learn a lot
from this mailing list and the views expressed by people on various topics
in this list are top quality. As the topics here help me a lot in terms of
my work and understanding the different work and thought patterns that exist
across the globe, I believe that people here would be able to put some light
on this particular topic.

It would be great if someone in the list could help me clarify these
questions for a research survey:

   - I wanted to know the prospects of being say a UX or IxD Architect for
one of the biggest retail brands to be known
   - Tough the employer gives a set of roles and responsibilities with the
offer, but how does the community take it. Is it exciting? okay? or no there
is no top level design thinking envolved?
   - How different is it from working at a same role for a software company
   - Is it more exciting as a designer in terms of challenges
   - What kind of resources can be reffered for retail/interactive marketing
   design

Thanks in advance guys!!!

Regards,

Oh, but wait.

I have some t-shirts without tags. The tag info is printed on the
material inside the back of the neck, where the tag should be.

But early in the mornings, when it's dark in the bedroom and I'm not
wearing my reading glasses, I can't tell where that printing is.
Especially on shirts that have been laundered several times.

So I end up putting them on backwards about half the time. The tag
provides a tactile cue for shirt orientation.

[IxDA Discuss] Wizard/Form Design Inspiration

2009-09-29 Thread Donna Lichaw
Hi all,

Can anyone think of any online or offline apps or websites that have
a well-designed "wizard" or customization widget/feature that helps
you customize and produce big blocks of text? Like write a letter, or
customize a product, or create a product...What I'm working on is
text-based, but I'd love to see any examples, text or photo or
whatever, anyone's got!

Basically, I'm looking for examples that take in *many*
inputs/fields and display *many* options/returns in a fun, clear, and
easy-to-understand way. Real-time feedback (output updating as you
type/select options) would be nice.

If anyone's got examples that aren't "wizards" in particular, but
just innovative forms with many steps, that's cool too.

Thanks!
Donna

Re: [IxDA Discuss] Examples of filtered lists with dropdowns

2009-09-29 Thread dlambert
I used to work for a software company that built a configurator /
business rules engine. We drove web sites where inputs to one field
would impact the availability / validity of options in other fields.
It sounds like you have this sort of scenario, too.

We had some control over whether any given input would cause
re-evaluation of the rules, such that the other fields (including
drop-downs) would be re-drawn to reflect the choices that were still
valid.

We found that it was very important to re-draw when changes were
likely to influence other controls on the same page, because users
*really* don't like to make a selection in a control, only to be
told that it's not a valid selection because of a choice they made
two fields upstream.

This is somewhat analogous to booking a flight, and having gone all
the way through to choosing your seats, etc., be told that you've
got to go back to the beginning because there isn't any room left on
that flight, after all. These situations are sometimes unavoidable,
but they'll never fail to frustrate a user.

If you've got a high interaction among fields like this, I'd
consider forcing the update so that the user is presented with
choices that are (to the best of your knowledge) valid choices for
them to make.
