https://github.com/MapServer/MapServer/releases )


Once you click the "Create a new release" button there, then GitHub 
automagically notifies the repository's "followers".

* Move jobs to root and use /processes/{processID} as execute endpopint
* Make all demos running within docker (including SAGA and OTB)
* Deploy demo HTML UI from github from the Dockerfile
* Add demo ZOO-Services build in the Dockerfile

Please report any issue you may have using this version.

In case no issue is reported in the 7 upcoming days, we will approve 
this release candidate.

[OSGeo-Discuss] Kicking off the Google Code-in contest

Hello everyone!

In ~2hours the 2018 Google Code-in contest ("GCI") begins, and runs 
until about 12 December.  This will be OSGeo's second time participating 
(last year there were 3,555 students from 78 countries, aged 13-17 years 
old).  It is special to see these young students dive into FOSS4G. 
Thank you to several OSGeo projects for participating this year: istSOS, 
GeoServer, GRASS GIS, MapServer, OSGeoLive, pgRouting, PostGIS, QGIS.


Please be kind to the young students, who may be coming into your 
project's network and asking questions.  (they are completing short 3-5 
hour tasks).  They really are the future of OSGeo.

At the Mentor Summit we had Sarah Maddox, a tech writer at Google, come 
and talk about her idea to bring more technical writers into open source 
projects. We would like your feedback and ideas about her proposal too! 
If you are intrigued, please keep reading.



Sarah is proposing a Google Season of Docs (GSoD) to give open source 
projects more opportunities to engage with technical writers, and vice

GSoD is similar to Google Summer of Code but focuses on docs and 
technical writers, rather than on code and students. The target 
participants are experienced tech writers who can work with you on your 
docs. The writing part of GSoD will run for 3 months, similar to GSoC. 
Another difference is that the technical writers will not be earning 
stipends, they will be doing this to learn more about open source code 
and working on developer focused docs with code and building their 
resume. And the writers will often have other jobs, this would be a side 
project for them (not something they will be focusing on for 30 hours a 
week - in most cases).



We think GSoD will bring benefits for both parties:

Open source projects gain documentation mentors embedded into their
community.

Tech writers gain mentorship in OSS and in developer products.

Hi Sergio, I just returned from the FOSS4G-GOV event in Brasilia and I 
nominated several leaders from that region.  I am aware of leaders being 
nominated from Argentina and Nicaragua as well.  I agree with you that 
it is very important to have more formal representation in OSGeo from 
Iberoamérica, and we need more representation (the leaders are there, as 
you know, we just need to give them the spotlight).  -jeff

Just a quick recap of the 2018 Elections:

- Vicky Vergara and Jorge Gustavo Rocha volunteer to help the CRO. Thanks!

- We got 36 valid nominations. We are still expecting some confirmations
from the nominees. For this reasons we are extending the first stage of
the charter members elections with 48 hours. However, no new nominations
will be accepted. Only confirmations of nomination acceptance from the
nominees.

- The electronic voting system is ready for charter members to second
the nominations, preventing the last year stress of seconding via the
discuss mailing list. Nominal vote invitations will be sent to all our
charter members on 10 of October. Thanks to SAC for setting up the
electronic voting system and to Vicky for her magic scripts.

[OSGeo-Discuss] Call for mentors for the upcoming Google Code-In contest, for kids aged 13-17

This is a call for OSGeo mentors for the Google Code-in contest (where 
short 3-5 hour tasks are created for kids aged 13-17).  OSGeo 
participated last year for the first time, where kids performed tasks 
from 11 OSGeo projects, completing 649 tasks in total over about a 6 
week span.  The tasks are short, only 3-5 hours long, and are not only 
about coding but can be documentation, testing, creating logos, videos, 
blogs, and fun things that kids like to do.


Interested mentors are asked to fill in the short Google form at 
https://docs.google.com/forms/d/1jDbLOiQpNbA4wldXo0N5cUDY6aDKkEIvouOL0osAyO0


The contests starts 23 October and ends 12 December, but OSGeo's 
application is due this coming Monday, so we please if you're interested 
fill in that Google form right away (having mentors helps our chances to 
have the application accepted).   You can see the full timeline of the

Astrid Emde was honoured with the 2018 Sol Katz Award, presented on 29 
August 2018, during the gala dinner of the FOSS4G event in Dar es 
Salaam. This was the 14th year of the award.


Astrid has been involved in FOSS for a long time, starting through her 
early Mapbender work at the CCGIS company in Germany, to becoming one of 
the leaders of the Mapbender team at the WhereGroup company, and now the 
backbone of OSGeo (working with the OSGeoLive team, helping with the 
OSGeo news items, organizing OSGeo Board meetings, processing license 
agreements as the OSGeo Secretary role, and becoming a true leader as an 
OSGeo Board of Director). Astrid is very active organizing events such 
as FOSSGIS events, the FOSSGIS e.V. local chapter events, preparing 
OSGeo booth materials, and helping organize code sprints all around the 
world.


Astrid is constantly working behind the scenes for the community, and 
her calm nature has helped many across the world to feel comfortable and 
grow.


On behalf of the OSGeo and FOSSGIS communities we congratulate and thank 
Astrid for all of her passion. Thank you Astrid, you deserve this.

Thank you Adam.  I believe listening and talking directly is even more 
important in the case of events such as FOSS4G-Asia where part of the 
culture is showing respect for each other.  It takes much more of a 
boots-on-the-ground approach, to talk directly and plan in those cases.

some living experience into discussion about a topic on which she has 
invested vast time and energy (and whose initial assessment of the work 
was actually completely correct)!


A great first step to increase diversity and inclusion would be to avoid 
this type of top down lecturing and engage with experience - and then 
listen. To stories like Vicky’s. To the experience of Maria and Maria; 
to the committee from FOSS4G Asia who have made choices for reasons we 
don’t know; and from FOSS4G in Dar, who made choices for very clear 
reasons because they were able to; and aimed to have a specific impact 
(which I hope, has worked).

In my particular case, I told her:
I am sure my father has the same concerns as your father, that is why he 
came with me.


And we ate in the University.

I invited my father, I paid his airplane ticket, hotel, food, souvenir, etc.
The reason that I invited him is: I wanted to fit in the culture as much 
as possible.

When passing through customs, he was called, and he had to do the talking.
When going shopping or eating, the cashier first interaction was 
directed to him.


I can't fight a culture, I have to blend in.

But I am glad that, this student's father is letting her study.
And maybe, in the future, she will have daughters that will go to the 
University and they will be able to go out of the University premises to 
eat.
And she will have grand-daughters that will can go out of the country 
(without a chaperon) and be speakers.

Yes, but lack of correlation refutes causation. That is their point:
gender equality does *not* cause equality of STEM gender outcomes.

Science requires humility. There is no greater experience in science
than refuting your own hypothesis because it means that you might
have discovered something non-obvious. The obvious hypothesis in
this study was that equality of STEM gender outcomes would improve
with gender equality. Their surprising discovery is the opposite.
While there is much conjecture as to the cause, the core finding is
remarkable, good science, and worthy of publication (in my
uninformed opinion as a layman).

Sol Katz was an early pioneer of FOSS4G and left behind a large body of 
work in the form of applications, format specifications, and utilities 
while at the U.S. Bureau of Land Management. This early FOSS4G archive 
provided both source code and applications freely available to the 
community. Sol was also a frequent contributor to many geospatial list 
servers, providing much guidance to the geospatial community at large.


Sol unfortunately passed away in 1999 from Non-Hodgkin's Lymphoma, but 
his legacy lives on in the open source world. Those interested in making 
a donation to the American Cancer Society, as per Sol's family's 
request, can do so at https://donate.cancer.org/index.


Nominations for the Sol Katz Award should be sent to 
solkatzaw...@osgeo.org with a description of the reasons for this 
nomination. Nominations will be accepted until end-of-day August 10th 
Anywhere on Earth (https://www.timeanddate.com/time/zones/aoe). A 
recipient will be decided from the nomination list by the OSGeo 
selection committee.


The winner of the Sol Katz Award for Geospatial Free and Open Source

work of community members, and pay tribute to one of its founders, for

The OSGeo Systems committee (SAC) has created a new Twitter account, to 
follow service status announcements: https://twitter.com/OSGeo_SysAdmin


Several members of the team now have access to that and will share 
updates that way.

Although we haven't (yet) shared FOSS4G travels together I have to say 
that I truly admire your passion and efforts, and we share a lot of the 
same traits (do-ing, asking questions, diving in, etc.)  I strongly 
second Maxi's words.  You are a leader and a big part of the OSGeo 
community.  Much of what you have been saying or asking I've been 
literally taking notes of how we can improve.  In fact I see you taking 
on more of a role and not less.  I am just speaking from the heart and 
being open.


I know how the written word can be so hurtful these days (and I don't 
want / but yet know that unfortunately my own words here can be 
misinterpreted as taking one side versus another), but I hope this 
public support shown here can give you renewed hope and energy for the 
OSGeo community.

Yes the OSGeo Gitea instance is fully open to anyone with an OSGeo ID, 
and you can create both public or private repositories.  I can also 
confirm that OSGeo's Gitea (https://git.osgeo.org/) has been stable for 
a while now, and most of OSGeo's system architecture files are 
leveraging it, as well as many software projects (you can browse the 
activity at https://git.osgeo.org/gitea/explore/repos).


Migration Tool

Once you login with your OSGeo ID (if you don't have one yet head to 
https://id.osgeo.org/) you should then see a small + icon in the top 
right, click that and select "New Migration".  There is a "Clone 
Address" field that you can then paste the link to your Github repository.


New Repository

You can also just create a new (public or private) repository: Once you 
login with your OSGeo ID (if you don't have one yet head to 
https://id.osgeo.org/) you should then see a small + icon in the top 
right, click that and select "New Repository".

graduation news to the whole Canadian Cartographic Association 
conference attendees.  When I was preparing I noticed that PyWPS was 
still listed as in-incubation on the Incubator wiki, so I have updated 
that and also listed its related documents in the "Graduated" section of 
the wiki (I've been doing this for a while now, to have an archive of 
the process, without having to search years of email archives); it would

Hi Stefano,

It is hard to add points here that aren't covered by the responses from 
all of the community leaders speaking here (even just considering 
everyone's backgrounds who are speaking here is quite fascinating, and a 
great sign of our passion for FOSS4G).


I only want to encourage this sharing, sharing your thoughts, asking 
questions and listening.  I think you asked a good question, that is 
quite healthy to discuss here with the community.


To be honest, when Venka, Markus and I first discussed creating a global 
"FOSS4G" event in 2004 we really had no idea where it would take us, or 
how it would go on to change the whole industry and spread across the 
whole globe.  But how did that happen?  Was it because we were so 
structured in what we required for a FOSS4G?  Opposite in fact: it 
spread because of our passion and openness: everyone from anywhere was 
welcome to share, laugh, learn, and be open.


I have personally moved my efforts from the global events to the smaller 
regional FOSS4G events, but the OSGeo Conference Committee is doing a 
good job in managing the FOSS4G-global process. Can things be 
improved/adapted as we all grow together?  Absolutely!  And part of that 
is talking and sharing ideas and concerns.


I find that when the topic of money comes up things become very 
delicate.  OSGeo Boards have been discussing sponsorship and revenue for 
a long time, and it is not easy as the OSGeo foundation needs money for 
infrastructure, but where should that revenue come from, should it come 
from a big global FOSS4G, or some other source?  Sponsorship is just one 
way (and we can always improve on those sponsorship requirements too).


Your question brings up more and more questions.  And I don't have the 
answers.  But talking about this is a good thing, as it shows that you 
and the community members care.


Please though know that you are not alone, you are big part of the 
passionate OSGeo community and your voice matters.

I wish all of OSGeo could see the activity and enthusiasm of these kids 
for OSGeo, it is really something, and gives the whole community a blast

Stay tuned! And help young students when they're asking on the MLs. It's their 
first step to join our community.

[OSGeo-Discuss] Code-in contest starts tomorrow

Hi all,

A little note to the whole OSGeo community that the Google Code-in 
contest begins tomorrow at 17:00 UTC.  Please keep in mind that a 
possible 1400+ students, aged 13-17 and from 500+ schools across the 
world can be diving into the OSGeo community, and asking questions on 
your project's email list, IRC/gitter/slack channels.  Please be extra 
kind to questions over the next 2 months (until 17 January).


I also want to take the time to thank those volunteers for mentoring the 
students, and who have created short tasks (that take 3-5 hours to be 
completed over 5 days) for OSGeo projects & initiatives, so that young 
students from all over the world get exposed to the OSGeo family's 
passion for sharing :)

[OSGeo-Discuss] Call for Volunteers for Geodata Committee

Dear OSGeo community,

We are all aware of how important Open data is for our community, and 
for the mission of OSGeo.  Most of you are aware that the OSGeo 
foundation has a committee dedicated to this, called the Geodata 
Committee; however the reality is that this committee is quiescent/not 
active/at rest, as its mailing list has not really been used since a 
message was posted in May of 2015 (which no one answered actually).


The Geodata Committee is still listed as a working committee on the 
OSGeo website, and points to a page[1] that contains the mailing list 
and the wiki.  The mailing list has 387 members, and the archives go all 
the way back to March of 2006.  Back in those days, the committee would 
meet regularly on IRC and it was very vibrant (thanks to Jo, Arnulf, and 
the many early visionaries pushing forward and sharing).


More recently, there was a "reboot" push for this committee around 2012, 
and also another one in October of last year.  Of course there were 
likely many other attempts, but those are the ones that come to mind.


We believe that open data is even more critical to the mission of OSGeo 
today, and a strong relationship with the various data communities is 
important for the health of the ecosystem.  We also look to the massive 
success of GeoForAll for sharing the passion for education and Open as a 
great example of what we can all do together.


Would you be willing to help revive the OSGeo Geodata Committee?  It 
would be great to hear more thoughts and ideas on this.  It does not 
seem right to dissolve the committee; in fact we want the opposite to occur.

[OSGeo-Discuss] Fwd: David Hastings has passed away

Very sad news indeed.  Even if you never got to meet David, you were all 
affected: he was a huge part of the first FOSS4G event in Bangkok in 
2004, where Markus, Venka and myself spent so much time with him, 
talking, sharing, which gave us strength for the next steps in creating 
a global FOSS4G event.  David owes much credit and respect from our 
global community for his tireless vision.  David spent much time in all 
parts of Asia sharing his passion.  My thoughts to his family.  Very

Dear All,

I am very sorry to convey this sad news on this list.

A dear friend and an early pioneer of the GRASS team,
David Hastings passed away in the Hospital in Colorado
on Monday 13 November as 11.25am.

David was a member of the GRASS-GIS Interagency Steering
Committee (GIASC) since 1987. I think he was a member till he passed
away, since  GIASC was never formally disbanded.

Besides his several other accomplishments, David is also an author of the
Linux " GRASS HOWTO" [1].

David was diagnosed with a serious illness in May, 2016 and could
not recover.

Thanks David for your contributions to GRASS, RIP.

OSGeo Sri lanka community and PGIS, University of Peradeniya are happy 
to invite you to an OpenStreetMap (OSM) Mapping event scheduled on 
Sunday 19th  November at the PGIS , University of Peradeniya to 
celebrate the OSM Geo Awareness week -2017.


OSM is a free, editable map of the whole world that is being built by 
volunteers largely from scratch and released with an open-content 
license.  OSM comes with a powerful editing tools and you will create 
OSM data to map our surrounding in the event. We will map some landslide 
/ flood prone areas which are continuously affected by frequent bad 
weather conditions so that everybody will be benefitted.


No prior experience is expected and all are welcome! This will be an 
interactive workshop.

Hi Volker,

I spoke with Vicky this afternoon and even just the nomination for the 
Board is beginning to open doors for her locally, to help spread OSGeo 
to more audiences.  Yes it can help, but I can see your point.  I think 
the new formal OSGeo-Europe initiative is a good example to examine, 
where a formal structure is in place now, to use for times when formal 
support or representation must be shown, and yet not need the OSGeo 
Board for its support.

other than Europe and NA have the rights to be reprensented failry. So,
I'd like to ask new board members to fix this kind of wrong
representation of board configuration by adopting new election rules.

  


2. I believe Jeff McKenna's ambiguous behaviours around election period
made both him and OSGeo untrustworthy. I don't want to mention again
here some of concerns over him in detail during the election. One thing
I'd like to point out is his un-withdrwal from board election after
disclosing the results. Nothing personal, Jeff. Actually I tried to
accept and understand this situation so many times for a couple of days,
but I failed to accept. We're not the children in the kindergarten! How
can it be happened? The last thing I did as a former board member was
approving the motion, "This board election is valid." I was able to
block the motion however I approved the motion. Because I accepted his
withdrawal as sincere one and trusted him. I'm feeling my good intention
was being betrayed. I know I don't have any rights now to change my
previous decision and I don't want to criticise someone here. New board,
this case cleary has shown that there's big loophole in our election
process. If OSGe can't fix it, OSGeo will lose trust and credibility.
Board, you need to bear in mind that there's already bunch of sign of
loosing trust from community.

  


Many mentioned that OSGeo is run by Do-ocracy. I believe the basis of
Do-ocracy is recognizing of someone's work and trust. If someone's
hardwork is not recognized and acknowledged fairy, who will want to jump
into the matters to fix it? And if someone can't trust the organization,
who wants to put their precious time and efforts to untrustworthy one?

  


If OSGeo lose the trust, it will lose everything. OSGeo is just shell.

Thanks for your well written and honest message.

To your first point, I fully agree with you.  We have worked so hard 
early on to make sure that OSGeo is a representation of all members from 
all around the world, and we now have a NA-Europe Board.  Venka's and 
your efforts to represent OSGeo is hard to put into words, as it is so 
important.  Venka is the glue that keeps us all together and motivated 
to share.


I think we can use this election to learn from it, to make something 
positive for the foundation.  We saw a lot of things happen, and a lot 
of people volunteered to help make the elections happen - quite a 
shocking amount of volunteer time was required this year.


Could this election be the driver we need to move to a Board that is 
represented by Charter members from specific geographic regions? 
Absolutely. I think we need a champion to drive that, put a formal 
process proposal on the wiki, and bring that to the Charter members for 
comments.


In the short term our goal could be to get the Charter members more 
involved at the Board level, to put the difficult decisions to the 
shoulders of the Charter members, and the OSGeo Board members just 
manage this.  The election process is a good place to start, while it is 
so fresh in everyone's minds.


To your second point: it is difficult to be put through such an 
aggressive campaign against you, in public.  It is something that I 
wouldn't wish on anyone, and I hope we can avoid putting another OSGeo 
volunteer through that again.


I think we can use this whole election and all agree on a proper 
process, to make sure that all of OSGeo is represented.  Now is a great 
time to start working on this all together.  Let's learn from this.

Dear Vasile, and the whole OSGeo community,

Thank you for all of your effort Vasile, these Charter and Board 
elections required an unbelievable amount of effort, and you handled it 
so well.


This hasn't been easy for me.

But the support of the community for my nomination gives me strength, 
and a renewed energy to help the OSGeo community grow.  I will now 
retract my withdrawal, and accept the new position on the Board of 
Directors.  I really look forward to working with the new Board, and 
help the OSGeo community!


Congratulations to the new Board members Maria and Astrid, and thank you

Interesting Andy, I can see how that RCV/PR/ranking could help better 
representation from our local chapters.  I think after the dust settles 
on this election, we should all then take a deep breath and sit back and 
analyze this 2017 election process, and together (as Charter members) 
make a proposal for future elections - I'd prefer to see this proposal 
happen in the next month, while it is still fresh in all of our minds - 
Andy it would be great to have your input on this.

Hi Gert-Jan,

I had tried to answer this question in my original manifesto, the 
original words are still there in that section you referenced, where I 
volunteer to help with the leadership of OSGeo and also stress the 
importance of the 'executive Board' (President, Vice Presidents) to help 
with the demands of leadership.


I also think there are already great volunteers in the current roles, we 
should always be respectful of their interests to remain in those roles, 
and speak with them directly to get a sense of next steps - I've 
personally found that a face-to-face Board meeting is best for handling 
this, as it is tricky to do over email or video.


For now I think it's only important that each candidate offers to help 
with the Board, in any capacity, which we all did - great!  I think this 
is awesome, having so many great leaders (all 9 candidates are great 
OSGeo leaders) interested in volunteering and helping our foundation 
grow.

Although these elections are about membership, I'd like to ask the

Hi Ravi,

Great question, and an important topic for Charter members.  I know 
there was a recent spreadsheet of relative costs (I was shown it 
post-FOSS4G Boston), but that doesn't answer your question at all, as 
your question is asking for our own opinions.


As you know, I have attended and help organize many FOSS4G events, 
local, regional, and international, which gives me a good perspective to 
analyze this.  In fact on Friday I'll leave for FOSS4G-State-of-the-Map 
Argentina, which has a full registration cost of 20 USD (yes you read 
that correct, not including workshop cost).  FOSS4G-Europe (I've 
attended most of them) is consistently very affordable, and geared for 
students.  Your FOSS4G-India is also geared for students.  FOSS4G-Japan 
events (Kyoto.Kansai is happening now) is usually held at university 
campuses or affordable venues.  FOSS4G-Asia events are always geared for 
students, and are very affordable.  FOSS4G-Russia events are very 
affordable (attendees must buy or bring their own lunches, and have no 
problem with that). Our international FOSS4G's are not affordable 
however, because the venue costs are so high (usually large conference 
center venues, the only venue that can hold such a high number of 
attendees usually, which has strict rules about food catering, and high 
costs for those) that the only way we can break even is to charge 
attendees a higher registration fee.


As I wrote in my manifesto, the original vision of FOSS4G by OSGeo was 
to plant a seed in a new community - this was my vision as I managed the 
selection process all those years.


Now fast forward to 2017, and what is OSGeo's vision of FOSS4G?  Let's 
be honest, there are now many different factors involved today, than 
back in 2005/2006.  We have such a strong academic, private, public 
sector community in OSGeo today that all have different needs and 
representation.  FOSS4G-Boston, at a strikingly gorgeous venue along the 
Boston waterfront, was heavily attended by industry - as you likely 
heard, it was an overwhelming success.  The harsh reality was that most 
of the core that attended FOSS4G-Europe a few weeks before could not 
afford FOSS4G-Boston (and it's downtown hotels etc).  But that is not a 
knock against the Boston event - as that spreadsheet shows, the relative 
costs haven't changed much, it has always been an expensive event.


So how do we have both, a core event where we can all afford to attend, 
and at the same time have a bigger event that is needed by all academic, 
private, public sectors?  Well, this in my opinion is where our 
local/regional FOSS4G's play a very important role.


If I am elected to the Board, I would like to help bring the spotlight 
to these smaller FOSS4G events, and help introduce some funding to help 
these smaller events run by local chapters (recently I've tried 
assisting several smaller events around the world to get funding from 
the OSGeo Board, and I can tell you that it is very difficult for the 
smaller event organizers to see through the red tape currently in 
place).  I feel that we can do better as a foundation to help these 
smaller FOSS4G events grow and shine.  This is my focus.  (we do have 
Code Sprint funding available, but I'd like to put on the table for 
discussion a "FOSS4G Regional Event Funding" process, to the OSGeo 
Board, in the form of a grant/gift, nothing to do with "profit 
sharing").  This would of course depend on the upcoming budget for the 
foundation.  But that is one idea that I have.


In terms of reducing the cost of the international event, that is much 
more difficult.  I know Ravi, that breaks our OSGeo heart reading this, 
and it hurts writing that, but each year the local committee does their 
best to keep costs as low as possible, given the venue demands (Boston, 
the 2018 team, and the 2019 bidders all must keep cost under 
consideration).  And the OSGeo Conference Committee is tasked with 
keeping an eye on this as well.


I haven't solved anything, but I tried to give you my thoughts on your 
good question. I can tell you that I am very concerned about FOSS4G 
costs, and will do my best to represent your great interests, if elected 
:)  I will also try to analyze this analysis spreadsheet more closely, 
when I see it again (it was only shown to be in a dark bar ha, not the 
best setting).

Cameron, I needed time to think on all of these issues being raised.  I 
never ignored you.  I disagree with your public statement that I avoid 
hard OSGeo questions.  I have always tried to represent the OSGeo 
community, and I have stood up for the community when others could or 
would not.  My problem is that I am sometimes too strong, too 
passionate, coming off as not caring, when in fact this is opposite: I 
have as much caring for the OSGeo community as anyone else here.


Thank you for voicing all of these public concerns of my career.   I 
have tried to answer your concerns.  I am sure you disagree with me for 
most or all of my answers, but I hope you take the time to let my words 
sink in like I did to all of your words, as that time was me showing you 
the most respect, how I respect your words and how powerful the online

Hi Steven, I think it is not easy dedicating so much effort for OSGeo, 
and at the same time trying to keep the lights on with a small business, 
as you know very well.  I think recent changes by the current Board 
handling the many tasks through 2 VPs and the president helps, really 
helps, but I am sure we can do more.  I think Helena mentioned in her 
vision leveraging funded roles for certain tasks, dedicating people to 
those everyday Board tasks, and this is a great idea.  There are many tasks.


I guess I am growing too, with OSGeo, making mistakes, and generally 
being a typical teenager (as OSGeo is in its teenage years).  I think 
Venka mentioned this in a recent keynote, and it is very true.

Thank you Eli for this concern, as when I was nominated I immediately 
realized the potential for a conflict of interest, and resigned as co-CRO.


It was not something I planned, giving a month of my time to the 
election and then stopping, but I agree with you that a more formal 
process for selecting the upcoming election CROs is needed.  I actually 
would like to see the CROs involved in the whole process, including when 
any changes to the voting/nomination process are needed.  So there is 
definitely room for improvement here.

The point is not to avoid Jeff confirming to himself that he accepts
the nomination, it is to avoid the CRO running an election and
counting votes when they are also standing for election. It is really
the Board's (and CRO's) responsibility to ensure that this situation
doesn't occur.  The Board should not appoint CROs who might accept a
nomination and people who might accept a nomination should not accept
appointment as CRO.  Maybe we should return to the tradition of the
CRO being a sitting Board member with a year remaining on their term.

Thanks for your words Cameron, I will do my best to address your 
concerns here now.


In a sense it is good that you bring up all this history, as it gives me 
a chance to clarify what actually happened.


In 2011 I had been doing so much for FOSS4G for so long, all those 
non-glorious tasks that helped build what FOSS4G is today, that I knew 
that we were approaching a critical point where we were asking too much 
of volunteers to make the next FOSS4G event happen.


Fellow leaders Venka, Gérald, and I had boots on the ground in China in 
2010 I believe, and we really pushed for FOSS4G-China to happen, but we 
all knew the effort involved, demanding more of a face-to-face approach, 
than past event planning.  With my many hats (chair of conference 
committee, then on every single local committee of FOSS4G, and Board 
member) I knew that for FOSS4G-2012 Beijing to happen we must invest 
boots-on-the-ground help, and be sure to guide the event to completion. 
Bringing FOSS4G to China was very important to me.


So what then happened would become one of my proudest moments in OSGeo: 
I very publicly proposed a partially funded "FOSS4G Advisor" role to 
mentor the Beijing team, and work closely from start to finish, back in 
2011, to do all of the little things.  The document lists so many 
important little tasks, but the last section says it the best:


 - propose role/position to OSGeo Board
 - once approved, introduce new role to FOSS4G 2012 local committee
 - do the work!

It was what I knew (and having created the FOSS4G conference committee, 
been on every local committee until then, only I knew this) had to 
happen, and right away.


Unfortunately the proposal was never approved by the OSGeo Board, and 
this devastated me, as I knew this was what was needed to make the event 
a success.  I would later resign from the OSGeo Board over that.


Fast forward a year, and the event never happened.  It was exactly what 
I warned.  To this day I feel such a role is needed for FOSS4G.  Here is 
my original document, note that tasks, costs, effort, everything is in 
the open and visible, for a future FOSS4G team to use:

(I would learn later that the German FOSSGIS organizers hired someone 
for that exact role, doing the little things each event to make sure

Your questions are great, and I think I tackled most of them in my 
manifesto/vision document.  But I think I did not properly address the 
"what has not worked as well as you hoped?".


In a job interview this is always a good question, a great way to 
self-examine and openly discuss things that come more difficult for you.


I think in my case, I let my passion sometimes get in the way of 
professionalism.  This is my downside in OSGeo.  I have so much passion 
for helping the OSGeo community, that I can sometimes come off as 
disrespectful to others in the community (Andrea Ross, Bart, Mark 
Lucas).   I am sorry for that.   If we were at an event right now I 
would walk directly over to each of them now to talk.   I am sorry that 
my words were disrespectful to you, and (in each case) I am sure I was 
wrong.


I am sure there are others upset at me, for almost 17 years is a long 
time to work in the Open community.


I am truly sorry.

If it sounds not meaningful, this actually comes from my heart.  We are 
all on the same team.

Thank you Cameron for kind words.   I am sure there are questions, and I 
am here to answer them for you.


As a long-time volunteer for OSGeo, I have always tried to represent the 
foundation and its community every step of the way.  During my term as 
President of OSGeo, we were really tackling the subject of the 
LocationTech-OSGeo relationship, and it became a very public discussion. 
I worked very hard to represent OSGeo, but sometimes my words may have 
been too strong towards Andrea Ross, and that could be my biggest fault. 
 When a letter was posted online criticizing me, and then shared to me 
during a Board meeting, this absolutely broke me.  I don't recommend 
anyone goes through that, seeing online words written about you, it was 
quite a feeling.


I was doing so much for OSGeo, making sure to give each issue or 
challenge time and effort, listening, and then talking, always publicly, 
that I obviously made many mistakes.  This can happen when you are so 
open, trying to make sure all of the community is informed.  At the 
time, when that happened, I felt that I was no longer doing the job 
(note that it is a job, fulltime, unpaid yes, but it is definitely a 
job, make no mistake) of the OSGeo President and I resigned immediately.


I have learned a lot since then, and for several years I worked on 
low-level OSGeo tasks, again helping wherever needed. But meeting Marc 
and Thea at FOSS4G-Boston and talking face to face gave me so much 
confidence, in the whole community - I am sure that both Thea and Marc 
felt the same way after our talk.  It was just so needed, and only the 
start of what I predict will become something magical.


You have many more emails and questions examining my career, which I 
will tackle in the next response.

Thank you for the support Hayashi-san.   I have really tried to spread 
FOSS4G and OSGeo all over Asia and Europe, as you mentioned.  I also 
truly love the OSGeo-Japan community, I feel like I am a long-time 
member of OSGeo-JP, and that a huge part of my growth as a person and a 
community member is due to the kindness and appreciation shown to me 
from so many OSGeo-JP members.


I miss you dearly and I am sure that I will see you soon in person at a

can help setup a little OSGeo booth there (on my to-do is to order an 
updated banner, as I go to so many local FOSS4G events it's a good 
investment for me, to help promote OSGeo), and we can print your Summer

Jeff McKenna

About me


Hey friends and family!  To say it is an honour to be nominated to again 
help represent the whole OSGeo community, is kind of an understatement 
for me.  I’ve been working hard within the community for so long, lately 
helping with the little things for the foundation, that when Nick and 
others reached out to me asking for me to help the organization at the 
leadership level for 2017, there was only one answer for me, yes!  :) 
Thank you to all that have reached out to me in support recently, so 
many from all over the world, your support means so much to me.
I think who I am has a lot to do with my parents, and I give them credit 
for giving me the opportunity to grow and then shine.  I am a product of 
a working-class family; my father was born and raised on a farm, and as 
I am the first-born, he taught me to get to know what hard work is.  My 
mother was the lead nurse in the Emergency hospital ward for 46 years, 
and she taught me true compassion for people, for everyone, no matter 
who they are – this ‘caring’ of people really stuck in me from my mother.
I would go on in life to become many things, which I was for many years 
so embarrassed by, but later I would become proud of them: 1) many years 
in university as a Civil Engineer (too young, from age 17, just wrong 
timing), 2) registered nurse (you have to step into someone’s shoes 
sometimes to really understand them), 3) initial attack forest fire 
fighting (making it to the elite 4-person heli-tack team in Canada was a 
proud moment, and again taught me hard work ethic and to help people and 
the environment, literally at the sound of an alarm bell and having to 
run to a helicopter within 3 minutes, to help some remote area anywhere 
in Canada, with no questions asked – got to experience remote areas of 
Northern Canada where few people get to see, and meet & become friends 
with so many good people, that are unfortunately underrepresented – this 
taught me to help stand up for those underrepresented, and help them 
shine),  4) hard manual labour directly on an automotive line making 
Honda Civics (during my summers as a student), really gave me early 
interactions with a successful Asian company, in a production line the 
size of 3 football fields long, teaching me the importance of quality 
assurance, & teamwork, and how important even the smallest of tasks is, 
for the end product, 5) professional ice hockey (playing in the United 
States, where I learned to respect the effort required to be a 
professional athlete, and that even playing a ‘game’ takes a lot of 
non-glorious tasks all year long), someone recently reminded me that I 
was a team captain at every level I played (college, university, etc.) 
and 6) finally back to my love of the world, and innovation, to find my 
calling in a new program (at the time the first ever 4 year degree 
program in North America in GIS), then called “Geographic Information 
Processing”, for my thesis I focused on “freeware” and Open Source. 
Somehow the Open Source community was an absolute natural fit me for, 
where teamwork, caring, doing the little things, hard work, and getting 
to know friends from all over the world, became my true calling.  With 
OSGeo and the community, I had found my true home.
I hope this helps people understand me, why I care, about people and 
communities from all over the world, why I literally hop on a plane with 
little notice to go help an OSGeo community grow, and share the OSGeo 
passion.


My vision
-

My vision has always been to help all communities, to give the quiet new 
person sitting at the back of the huge room the spotlight in OSGeo, to 
help that community grow, and then shine.  I have also tried to make 
OSGeo feel like a family, where the family stretches all over the world. 
 I have tried to make local leaders more visible, promoting their local 
events to the world stage.  Really my vision for OSGeo is, and has 
always been, to share, to laugh, to make friends, and to have fun.


What you have done within the community in the past
---

Much of my focus is around FOSS4G, in the past and currently.  I have 
tried to bring the event, as any size big or small, to all areas of the 
world.  Early on I created a process and a document (still used today in 
some form) to help make sure that FOSS4G moves around the world, to all 
parts, with the goal of planting a seed in the local community.  More 
recently I focus on smaller FOSS4G events, just doing the little things 
to help those communities grow, for events such as FOSS4G-Asia in 2018 
in Sri Lanka, or discussions of new events such as FOSS4G-MENA (Middle 
East and North Africa), or FOSS4G-Kuwait (initial discussions happening 
now).  At FOSS4G-Boston there was talk of another FOSS4G-Australia, in 
2018, and I am excited to throw my hat in for that too.  At the recent 
FOSS4G-Paris I happily committed

It is my pleasure to nominate Dirk Frigne for the OSGeo Board elections. 
I enjoyed the opportunity to work with Dirk on the 2015 board where he 
enthusiastically applied himself to the responsibilities of the role, 
and stepped forward as a vice-president to represent OSGeo publicly.


Dirk is a long standing member of our community, making it a challenge 
to provide a summary of his contributions. I first met Dirk through the 
incubation of the Geomajas project, where he demonstrated a knowledge 
and passion for open source. Dirk is an established business 
professional who I believe founded Geosparc as an entrepreneur.  Dirk 
is instrumental in the founding of the new OSGeo Europe chapter, serving 
as the vice-president of this regional group. For more details on Dirk

OSGeo is built on the passion of members like Dirk Frigne. Our board and

It is a great honor for us to nominate Prof. Helena Mitasova for the 
2017 OSGeo Board Elections.


Prof. Helena Mitasova hardly needs any introduction. Her activities that 
encompass the entire gamut of the OSGeo Foundation goals, speak for 
themselves. She was awarded the Sol Katz Award in 2010 for her long 
standing contribution to the OSGeo Foundation and FOSS4G communities.


Recently, she has been one of the driving force behind the Geo4All 
initiative. She is also instrumental in the conclusion of several MoUs 
with international professional organizations. Her deep insight in area 
of Education and Research will help to strengthen our outreach. Further, 
her invaluable experience on the present OSGeo board will also be an asset.

I'd like to nominate Vicky Vergara [1] to the OSGeo Board of Directors.  I
think she'll be a great asset to our outreach efforts.

Vicky has been heavily involved in OSGeo activities in both development and
outreach.

On the Development side, she's the main maintainer of the pgRouting
community project in all areas documentation, coding, testing, and
refactoring.
On related work she also helps with maintenance and development of the QGIS
pgRouting Layer and maintaining and enhancing the osm2pgrouting loader tool.

On the outreach side, she's been a mentor for a number of years for GSoc.
She also got recently involved with OSGeo-Live helping in streamlining the
documentation and general workflow.

She speaks often at FOSS4G conferences most recently Korea, India and she's
off to Argentina.  She is fluent in a number of languages (Spanish, English,
and some Japanese and other languages I don't know).

She has a balanced perspective on things being first an Economist and second
a Computer Scientist.

She is very energetic and when you are around her you can't help but to be
excited to.

It is my pleasure to nominate Sanghee Shin, from South Korea, for 
re-election for the OSGeo Board of Directors. Sanghee has been involved 
in FOSS4G for a long time, he is the founding member of the OSGeo Korean 
Chapter, which chapter actually hosts a local FOSS4G-Korea event every 
year since 2011. He has succesfully organized FOSS4G 2015 Seoul and has 
since served at the Board of Directors for 2 years.
Sanghee as a Board member combines a great sense of community with a 
strong perspective of business.


Sanghee has accepted this nomination, so please welcome him back to the 
OSGeo Board of Directors.

It is my pleasure and honor to nominate our President Venka Raghavan[1], 
from Japan, for re-election for the OSGeo Board of Directors. Venka's 
contributions to FOSS and FOSS4G are inspiring to our community. He is 
the 2012 winner of the Sol Katz Award, he created the term “FOSS4G” back 
in 2004, using it as the name of an international event in Thailand, and 
since then he has promoted FOSS4G all over the globe.


Venka has also been directly involved in OSGeo since its inception, in 
fact he was on the first OSGeo Board of Directors from 2006 to 2007. He 
is also a long-time board member of the OSGeo Japan chapter. He has 
served the OSGeo community for the last 2 years with great commitment 
and passion from the position of the President.


A professor at Osaka City University in Japan, Venka constantly 
encourages his students to leverage FOSS4G in all of their research. His 
influence in Asia wide reaching, being easily the most influential 
FOSS4G leader there. Venka also helps organize the GIS-IDEAS Symposium 
every 2 years in Vietnam, which is always FOSS4G-based.


Venka is happy to be a part of the OSGeo Board again, helping the 
foundation that he helped form at the beginning. So please welcome back 
Venka to the Board of Directors.

[OSGeo-Discuss] Call for mentors and tasks for Google Code-in

A reminder that starting next week we must work on OSGeo's application 
for the Google Code-in (where short 3-5 hour tasks are given to kids 
aged 13-17).  Interested mentors are asked to fill in the short Google 
form listed at https://wiki.osgeo.org/wiki/Google_Code_In_2017_Mentors


We only have 12 mentors so far!

Here is a list of all OSGeo projects and their listed tasks so far (we 
only have tasks for GRASS GIS, pgRouting, MapServer, OSGeo-Live, FOSS4G, 
and OSGeo foundation).  We are missing many projects!!!
