[slim] Squeezebox2, Universal Remote and Me

2005-04-07 Thread David Lutz
My Squeezebox2 recently arrived and to celebrate I went out and got a
Universal Remote (Sony RM-VL700S) to control both the Squeezebox2 and my
amp/receiver. I carefully followed the directions that came with the
remote to set the DVD key to be a JVC DVD, verified in the player
settings that I had both Slim_Devices_Remote and jvc_dvd boxes checked,
pointed the remote at my Squeezebox2 and started clicking. Nothing
happened. I have turned on the d_ir, d_irtms and d_slimproto debugging
flags. When I use the included remote I see the irCode come through the
logs and I even see the IR packets logged by d_slimproto, using the
universal remote, I get nothing. No IR packets logged by d_slimproto or
irCodes logged by d_ir. I am trying to figure out if this is a problem
with me, the new remote or squeezebox2 (at the moment I figure they are
all equally likely). I am currently using v6.0.1 with firmware 9, but I
saw the same thing last night with v6.0 and firmware 8.

Has anybody else seen this behavior? Is anybody else trying to use a
JVC DVD remote (or other universal remote) to control their squeezebox2?

This particular remote is a learning remote and I have been able to
train it to mimic the included remote so I can get full functionality,
but I am lacking a bit of extra convienence I was hoping for. I would
like to be able to hack the .ir file a bit and add a bit more
functionality for some of the extra keys on the remote, but it looks
like the squeezebox is carefully hording the IR codes and only passing
the slim devices ones on to the server.

Re: [slim] SB1 buffer size

2005-04-07 Thread Phil Karn
Sean Adams wrote:
When I started designing the Squeezebox1 hardware in 2002, I fully
realized that an enormous buffer would be desirable. However, the
architecture (which was chosen based on a long list of goals including
ethernet/wireless capability, ability to drive a graphic VFD, OS
performance, etc) unfortunately did not have an SDRAM interface, only
SRAM, which meant that a very large (several MB) buffer would not be
possible. Dean and I did a great deal of testing and never saw any
problems on wired ethernet under any OS. On wireless networks there were
some issues at first, which were quickly eliminated, most of them
anyway, with some careful tuning of the TCP stack.
I understand your design constraints. Memory is nice, but it can also be
expensive and you don't want your box costing more than it really has
to. That's quite reasonable.

What we found was that in the real world there were still a few
problems. I spent many weeks studying packet dumps and optimizing TCP
(http://www.seanadams.com/ip2k), testing on Windows, Mac, and Linux,
getting feedback from customers, and making improvements.
Yup. Many stacks do have glitches, although I think the later Linux
stacks behave very well, especially when the entire path is just a few
high speed Ethernet hubs. A bigger issue, I think, are the OS and disk
scheduling algorithms.

It is no secret that a bigger buffer would be nice - in fact I think
this request has been in our public bug database since its inception.
Unfortunately the only way we can make the buffer larger is to make new
hardware with a larger buffer, which is exactly what we've done.
Optimizing streaming performance is still an active goal.
But I don't think that buffer *has* to be huge. If it does, then that's
a symptom of brokenness someplace else, specifically in the server and
the way it is treated by the operating system on which it runs.

PCM streaming on Squeezebox1, even with its 256K buffer capacity, works
as advertised in nearly all environments, unlike my car which can only
reach its advertised top speed on less than 0.01% of the road surface in
the USA. I realize this is a retarded analogy and not a kind response
but consider this: we are more open than any hardware company (that I
know of) in terms of admitting where there's room for improvement
(bugs.slimdevices.com). We view this information not as a liability, but
as priceless guidance in how to make our products better.
Um, I assume you didn't mean that as a serious analogy! A better analogy
would be to the per-mile probability of my car suddenly and without
warning, seizing up and stopping dead in the middle of the freeway.
Then, after a few seconds, the tires screech and it suddenly lurches
back up to 65 mph just as unexpectedly. :-)

Certain issues are simply not addressable in software (802.11g support,
as another example). For those issues we develop new hardware.
Understood. Since you advertised those hardware limitations, I can't
complain. Your transcoding scheme to optionally limit the network bit
rate to something it can support was a very nice touch.

Finally, as protection we provide a 30-day no questions asked return
period. If the product doesn't work the way you want it to, or even if
you just have a change of heart for some reason, we'll take it back.
Well, that's problematical when the problem is in software, not
hardware. Again, I have no complaints about the Squeezebox hardware,
either version 1 or version 2. If the hardware were broken, mis designed
or otherwise unusable, then it would be easy to decide to return it in
the 30 day period.

But the hardware is all fine; all of the problems I've encountered have
been in server software, and that makes returning the unit a much harder
call. You never know whether a given problem that you consider really
serious will be fixed tomorrow or next week or next month or next year.
Believing strongly as I do in the power of open source, I have decided
to keep all three Squeezeboxes and wait for the software to improve. And
that can be frustrating. Yes, I could roll up my sleeves and jump in and
hack the code myself, but the Slimserver package is already a very large
chunk of code that presents a dauntingly steep learning curve to anyone
who wants to modify it. Confronted by it, I'd be strongly tempted to
start over from scratch, or by adapting existing, mature mechanisms that
I already know to work well (e.g., adapting the standard printer
spooling system to manage queues and play lists for a Squeezebox.)

I don't know what else to say - we vastly improved PCM streaming
performance by adding a huge buffer, adding 802.11g wireles support, and
adding lossless compression. At the same time we added a whole slew of
features in SlimServer 6 which improve SLIMP3, a product which we began
selling out of my garage in 2001, and of which we have not sold a single
unit since 2003. I realize that these are not huge time

On Windows, SlimServer is packaged as an executable that bundles the Perl
packages that we use. To make source modifications, you need to have an
ActiveState Perl installation
(http://www.activestate.com/Products/ActivePerl/) and will need to run the
server via the slimserver.pl script.

The visualizers are configurable from the server, though we haven't yet
created a UI for this. If you're feeling particularly bold, you can modify
the configuration parameters in the server source. The parameters for the
right-side visualizer in the Now Playing modes are in
Slim/Player/Squeezebox2.pm and those for the full-screen visualizers are in

The spectrum analyzer is implemented using a simple fixed-point FFT with a

considerably more power in the lower frequency bands, one of the
configurable parameters is a preemphasis value applied to the frequency bins
after the FFT (effectively a multiplier for the higher frequency
bins) - the value is specified in dB/KHz.
I've spent a little bit of time playing with the parameters to get something
that looks reasonably good (and that's the eventual goal, right?). If
anyone, ideally someone with a better aesthetic sense than I, is interested
in experimenting and coming up with better parameters, or even a UI for
users to configure their own parameters, I'd welcome the changes.

[slim] Squeezebox 2 Display Problem Question

2005-04-07 Thread Gerald B. Cox
I was playing around with the different screen savers and noticed the following.
On the elapsed time and remaining time bar there is what appears to be two
vertical lines approximately in the middle of the bar - which would seem to be
a marker showing the halfway point. However when switching to the Digital VU
Meter I notice the same two lines in the same position even though the time bar
is no longer being used. My question is this a software issue or is my display
defective? Has anyone else noticed this? Thanks!

I'd also like to see the sort order as artist/album, or maybe
artist/year/album rather than just by album name. Ideally there'd be
some
ability to change the sort order from within the interface.

sorting options for browse artwork is filed under bug 305, if I recall
correctly.
the information currently appears in the tooltips when you move the
mouse
over the thumbnail. Utilmately, it would be nice to be able to put up
artwork
alongside the other listings as a thumnail on the left side instead of
having
its own mode.
Exactly. I just left a comment under bug (enhancement request) 948. A
similar approach to the interface would be to have a checkbox on the home
page that the user can tick to "Browse with Artwork". Then any of the
standard browses would display the thumbnailed page view now used for
Browse by Artwork (which could be eliminated), otherwise show the table
view. If possible the setting should be remembered between visits to the
server so that it doesn't need to be checked each time.

Apologies if this has been mentioned before - am new here; have
had a quick look, but have not seen it mentioned. Maybe I've just
missed it.
When "Browse Artwork" is selected, it does not show any album
details under each thumbnail, just "Play" and "Add to playlist".
Using SlimServer 6.0.1, on Windows XP WS, as of last night.
I may be mistaken, but I'm sure the previous version on the trial
box here - 6.0b1 - showed more detail under each thumbnail.
Am I dreaming?
I've just begun playing with artwork and browsing by artwork so I have no
recollection of whether that's how it used to work. But I do know that it
_should_ work like this. The album name and date appear where there's no
thumbnail shown, but when there _is_ a thumbnail they're not being
displayed. There's no way to recognize many albums only by their
thumbnailed image.

I'd also like to see the sort order as artist/album, or maybe
artist/year/album rather than just by album name. Ideally there'd be some
ability to change the sort order from within the interface.

I've always used the file naming convention of _[album].jpg for album
covers (and _[album].m3u for playlits). In Windows Explorer this places
these files at the top of the folder listing.

So in the Server Settings / Interface I have %_ALBUM specified as the
alternate artwork file naming convention. Is this not correct or is
there some reason it won't work? The only covers that Slim Server is
picking up are those named cover.jpg.
This is filed already as bug
http://bugs.slimdevices.com/show_bug.cgi?id=952
Comment added. The problem appears to only be at the Home / Browse
Artwork page level - the page that displays thumbnail sized images. At
the next level the full-sized artwork appears correctly.

Yeah, I tried to do it by hand myself. It seemed easy enough from the
description of the process they have up. Oh well.

Well, as I said that's the tricky part. As far as I can tell, there's
not a way to control the query depth through the web interface.
Awhile ago I hacked one of their example programs (getalbum I think)
to spit out the data like what was attached. The example using your
disc was, well, an example. I quickly cut-n-pasted it together from
four different web urls. The data's all there, just not in one concise
url. :)

...

I'm hoping to go one step further and stuff the data into an app
block in the flac itself. I've done this by hand, and it works. Now
I just need to put together a tool that takes a flac with a cuesheet,
calculates the id, does the lookup from the server, and stuffs the
results back into the file. (Then once that's working well, pester the
musicbrainz folks into integrating it into the next version of their
tagger tool.)
But I can certainly see the appeal of keeping that data in a db
instead/as well.

Here are instructions provided by a Cherise Emerson [EMAIL PROTECTED]:

Start with Predixis - navigate to File : Customize Options : Services.
Check API. Leave Music Magic running.

Next - Navigate to Slimserver : Server Settings : Plugins - make sure Music
Magic is checked.

Set preferences in Server Settings : Music Magic

All should be fine - took me some time and a few nudges to get the order

Hmm, someone raised the enhancement before I did (#1330). I've had a couple
like this recently where I have searched but not found anything so raised a
bug, only for it to be set as a duplicate.

It's interesting though, in that I did a search for "new music" before I added
the enhancement, and #1330 was not reported. Looking at the timestamps on the
creation of #1330 and #1332, my bug was raised a whole 2.5 hours after #1330.
Does it take new bug reports a while to filter through the system before they
are searchable, or am I searching incorrectly?

Jermey,
Could you edit slimserver-convert.conf and change the #PIPE# to #DEBUGPIPE#
Then repost output with --d_source --d_remotestream enabled
Thanks.

Subject: [slim] AlienBBC problem

Hi,
I am trying to get AlienBBC 0.97 to work on 6.0.1 on XP (the problem was the same on 0.94 on 6.0 however). I can manually play
the streams through mplayer, and I see all the Alien UI in Slimserver but after 2 'Connecting...'s, nothing ever plays. From the
log I can see an error

readlen undef: (Unknown error)10054
end of file or error on socket, opening next song, (song pos: 0(tell says: .
0), totalbytes: )
which I've not seen mentioned before in any of the recent threads on Alien
problems. Any clues out there?
Jeremy

Not comfortable having this done in the field - specialty SMT component
need replacing and a tweak to the board.

We recently identified an electrical issue that would cause coax

I am not using an external DAC at the moment so I'd rather spare us
both the hassle of sending my unit back to fix it. Does this have to
be done now, or could I have it fixed whenever I decide to upgrade to
a DAC and find I am affected?
Whenever. Optical is totally unaffected by the way, so this is only an
issue IF you're using coax AND you encounter loss of sync. As far as we
know only about 1 in 100 receivers exhibit this.

[slim] Artwork problem

2005-04-07 Thread JJ
I've always used the file naming convention of _[album].jpg for album
covers (and _[album].m3u for playlits). In Windows Explorer this places
these files at the top of the folder listing.

So in the Server Settings / Interface I have %_ALBUM specified as the
alternate artwork file naming convention. Is this not correct or is there
some reason it won't work? The only covers that Slim Server is picking up
are those named cover.jpg.

Ah, k. I didn't get what they were actually saying at the end of
Outside the Wall - so there really is nothing missing, just an extra
second of silence. Hmm, maybe I'll change it with a wave editor to be
truly cyclic. The idea is kind of neat.

Anyway, thanks for clearing that up!

[slim] Mac OSX Slimserver listing many songs twice

I've got slimserver to use iTunes for it's library and I left the path

The snippet of "Outside the Wall" at the beginning of "In the Flesh?"
(the first song on the first disc) is a deliberate cyclical thing. If
you listen closely, at the very end of "Outside the Wall", the voice
begins, "Isn't this where-" and gets cut off. The beginning of "In
the Flesh?" continues the sentence with "-we came in?" with some more
of the accordion melody before the actual first song comes in.

I dunno if it was cut in such a way that it'd be seamless if played on
endless repeat like that, but it should be close. The little gap
might be part of your FLACs or inserted as the server queues up the
first album again. But the duplication of the music at the very
beginning of the record is supposed to be there.

I'd have to dig up one of these analog CD audio cables and rummage
around in the machine - I'd rather not. Digital CD playback works fine
of course, but that's no different than ripping in the first place.

Iain,
You could just use a power amp and use the volume control on the squeezebox. If you wanted a really neat solution (and are a bit nifty with a screwdriver) you could get a power amp module from Maplins and mount it in one of the speakers... or flog your missions and buy a pair of active monitors (Tannoy, Alesis and Behringer all do fairly good active monitors for around 2-300 quid)

Cheers,
Joe

Folks:

I am about to install an SB2 in a room on a shelf with shelf speakers (Mission M30is - http://www.mission.co.uk/product/m3iseries/loudspeaker_m30i.htm ).

My problem is the shelf is 25cm (10in) deep and I need a reasonable amplifier to sit between the SB2 and the speakers that fits on the shelf. This sounds like it should be easy, but it's not been very easy so far. Most hifi separate amps are 30cm deep at a minimum.

The only amp so far I've found has been the Creek A50i which is 23cm deep (just fitting with an RCA at the back) but it's a bit over the top for the room and pricey at GBP 479 (USD 800+).

I've been through the archives to the list and seen some of the in-wall suggestions, but I don't really have that option as I've just replastered :)

I recall seeing an amp that was designed for PC amplification alongside a laptop as part of following a thread on this list once, but i can't find it at all.

Anyway, what I need is:

- a decent amp (by decent i mean it has to deliver a sound I'm likely to enjoy - I've been quite impressed by Cambridge Audio's A1 & Azur range so that is the kind of thing I'm after.
- nothing too expensive as it's only driving bookshelf speakers (that are pretty good for their size)
- 23cm or less deep and not wider than a standard piece of hifi separate (I could use something like a second hand NAIT 1 put sideways, but there's no guarantee of getting them at a reasonable price)
- available in the UK

Anyone any thoughts or suggestions they'd care to share with me ?

Thanks in advance

..Iain

I finally got the studio version of Pink Floyd's The Wall and
ripped/encoded it as FLAC, as always. The album was playing in
original order and on repeat...
The last track of disc 2 ended with someone talking, who gets cut off
rather apruptly, followed by about half a second of silence, then some
more silence at the beginning of disc 1, and more or less the same
melody continued for a few seconds.
Combined with the fact that the sb2 display is not exactly in sync
with the audio at the end of songs I first thought I was seeing things
and invalid data in the buffer, but foobar2000 does the same thing,
the last track is cut off. Is it supposed to be this way or is my rip
bad? I'm afraid my last 'real' cd player died some time ago so I can't
really check if I'm missing the last few samples.

How serious exactly is this problem? Is it it restricted to a
particular manufacturer or is it widespread?

I'm in the UK and I have a SB2 that has a MAC address of

I'm using the coax digital out at the moment and it works with my

point this year. I would be a little disappointed if my SB2 then
didn't work properly.

Should I return it?

I don't know if I'm the best one for that. I just throw patches at the
slim folks every now and then. And I'm certainly not the only one that
messes around with that part of the code, so I'm probably not in a
position to make an accurate assessment.

As for me, I'd like to see a (mostly) standard format emerge too. So
far however the number of contenders has been small enough that it
hasn't been too much trouble. Especially since some of them are things
we deal with in the code anyway, such as parsing cuesheets.
As long as the number of supported formats goes down over time and not
up, we're probably in ok shape.

Nope, just S/PDIF. Waddya want for a $137 DAC?
Crap - well this is a tricky issue to debug without poking at it with a
scope.

BTW S/PDIF is S/PDIF - could mean optical or coax. "TOSLink"
specifically means optical, but if you just say S/PDIF it could mean
either.

James,

Sorry if I'm missing something or stating the obvious but have you
looked at Player Settings -> Audio tab in the web interface? There's
an option there that allows you to control volume sync (enabled or
disabled) for each player, individually. There have been some bugs
ironed out recently wrt this feature
(http://bugs.slimdevices.com/show_bug.cgi?id=1258,
http://bugs.slimdevices.com/show_bug.cgi?id=1216) but I think it's
supposed to be working in 6.0.1.

Ben

I hadn't actually noticed those settings, but both were set to not sync
volume anyway. They don't actually track each others volume, its only
when one is playing and the other is started that the initial device
jumps to the new units volume. From then on volume can be adjusted
independently.

At the moment, we are almost done with basic blasting capability, where

Re: [slim] SB2 geekport

2005-04-07 Thread Sean Adams
Geekport software is not done, but yes, you'll be able to plug a
standard 1/8" IR blaster into the headphone port.

At the moment, we are almost done with basic blasting capability, where
the server sends commands to the Squeezebox2. Pass-through, macros,
triggers and other things are possible down the road.

Blasting support is planned for 6.1 - right now we are only putting in
bug fixes.

created a UI for this. If you're feeling particularly bold, you can
modify the configuration parameters in the server source. The parameters
for the right-side visualizer in the Now Playing modes are in
Slim/Player/Squeezebox2.pm and those for the full-screen visualizers are
in Plugins/Visualizer.pm. The configuration parameters (including
position, orientation, bandwidth, etc.) are documented in the first file.

The spectrum analyzer is implemented using a simple fixed-point FFT with
a Hamming window applied to the signal. Since most real-world audio has
considerably more power in the lower frequency bands, one of the
configurable parameters is a preemphasis value applied to the frequency
bins after the FFT (effectively a multiplier for the higher frequency
bins) - the value is specified in dB/KHz.

I've spent a little bit of time playing with the parameters to get
something that looks reasonably good (and that's the eventual goal,
right?). If anyone, ideally someone with a better aesthetic sense than

or even a UI for users to configure their own parameters, I'd welcome
the changes.

Basically, the default for wireless playback is to play WAV files as
high quality MP3, as this saves bandwidth, which can reduce problems
such as dropouts. For wired use, WAV is played as WAV. You can ensure
WAV is played as WAV even for a wireless connection by going to Player
Settings, Audio, and setting Bitrate Limiting to No Limit.

And if WAV is played back as MP3, the forward and rewind buttons don't
work.

Possibly the upgrade reset your settings.
With an SB2, WAV is transcoded to FLAC. It's possible to disable this
transcoding on the Server Settings > File Types page of the web
interface. Without disabling this setting, you will not be able to
FWD/RWD WAV files.

[slim] Browse Artwork - doesn't show any album details

2005-04-07 Thread FRANK ZAPPA

Apologies if this has been mentioned before - am new here; have had a quick look, but have not seen it mentioned. Maybe I've just missed it.
When "Browse Artwork" is selected, it does not show any album details under each thumbnail, just "Play" and "Add to playlist".
Using SlimServer 6.0.1, on Windows XP WS, as of last night.
I may be mistaken, but I'm sure the previous version on the trial box here - 6.0b1 - showed more detail under each thumbnail.
Am I dreaming?

I have WEP enabled, I believe WPA is not supported for SB1
(I assume it's unlikely to be at this point now that SB2 is out)

You can't use 'shared-key' encryption either - this got me for a while.
Other than that it was painless.
I only use 64 bit encryption (lazyness).

A while ago, a tried setting up some encryption on my wireless network,
but I couldn't get SB to connect to a 64-bit or 128-bit encrypted LAN.
(I think, at the time, I was still on firmware revision 39). I ended up
disabling encryption, so now I'm back to MAC filter. When I tried the
encryption, I was on MAC filter plus encryption.

Can anyone confirm whether this works or not? I guess it must work at
some level, as I haven't seen any posts about it on the lists
recently...?

So if someone can let me know that it definitely works ok, then I'll try
and get it up and running again on my home LAN.

Are there any "preferred" encryption methods? e.g. 64-bit, 128-bit,
WEP, WPA or whatever?

Cheers!

[slim] release 6.0/6.01 ebuild for Gentoo

2005-04-07 Thread Peter Bodley
Hi,
I have been looking at the ebuild for slimserver 6.0.b3 that is available at
http://bugs.gentoo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=73832
and am trying to update it to install version 6.0.1, so far without success.

Has anyone been able to get this ebuild working yet?

The problems I have had so far were the Bin directory wasn't initally
being deployed, and then the perl binaries are not being found after
running Dan's build-perl-modules.pl.

Gentoo is brilliant when everything works, but I am still getting lost
when trying to pick up the pieces of a failed install.

thanks

[slim] Slightly OT: Small Amplifier recommendations

2005-04-07 Thread Mailing Lists
Folks:
I am about to install an SB2 in a room on a shelf with shelf speakers
(Mission M30is -
http://www.mission.co.uk/product/m3iseries/loudspeaker_m30i.htm ).

My problem is the shelf is 25cm (10in) deep and I need a reasonable
amplifier to sit between the SB2 and the speakers that fits on the
shelf. This sounds like it should be easy, but it's not been very easy
so far. Most hifi separate amps are 30cm deep at a minimum.

The only amp so far I've found has been the Creek A50i which is 23cm
deep (just fitting with an RCA at the back) but it's a bit over the top
for the room and pricey at GBP 479 (USD 800+).

I've been through the archives to the list and seen some of the in-wall
suggestions, but I don't really have that option as I've just
replastered :)

I recall seeing an amp that was designed for PC amplification alongside
a laptop as part of following a thread on this list once, but i can't
find it at all.

Anyway, what I need is:
- a decent amp (by decent i mean it has to deliver a sound I'm likely
to enjoy - I've been quite impressed by Cambridge Audio's A1 & Azur
range so that is the kind of thing I'm after.
- nothing too expensive as it's only driving bookshelf speakers (that
are pretty good for their size)
- 23cm or less deep and not wider than a standard piece of hifi
separate (I could use something like a second hand NAIT 1 put sideways,
but there's no guarantee of getting them at a reasonable price)
- available in the UK

Anyone any thoughts or suggestions they'd care to share with me ?
Thanks in advance
..Iain

Thanks.
Sorry for my ignorance. What is "transcoded"?
I use only WAV files ripped by EAC. I will check again tonight. And, no, I
don't think anything changed in my settings.

Not that critical at all for me, but a bit curious. Anyone experiencing
the same thing?

And no other changes in your settings when you upgraded? Remember that
Forward and Rewind only work on files that don't get transcoded.

Sean,
Thanks for the detail. And, yes, it does clarify. Funny you brought up
EAC. I just downloaded it last night. But all I could find on the site was
a series of Betas with no final. Are you using the latest Beta version, or
am I looking in the wrong place?

reliably and ripping is super easy. Forgetting my inherent dislike of MS,
if it's really that much more of a pain to manage ripping and tagging in
FLAC, what's the advantage other than open format?

Either way, it belongs in Bugzilla. They can change the bug/freq tag
after it's filed, if you get it wrong.

What should the "Screensaver delay time in seconds" in Player Settings do?

I assumed that it should be the time after, say, stopping playing or
switching off before the screensaver started running, but it doesn't seem to
have any effect on that.

RE: [slim] Struggling with AlienBBC FC3 install

2005-04-07 Thread Patrick Dixon
OK, I have just 'located' everything mplayer and wiped it from the system,
and then done a reinstall of the mplayer rpms.

The rpms still say they're not installed (but they are - so must be
something wrong with the rpm header or something), and AlienBBC now all
works! :-)

First observation (with SB2) is that the spectrum display 'stutters' when
playing AlienBBC stations. Switching the RTSP -> FLAC and RTSP -> WAV file
conversions off (ie forcing MP3 streaming??) fixes this, but forcing a FLAC
stream in a similar manner doesn't - which seems odd given the native FLAC
decoding by the SB2 and that I haven't noticed this with FLAC music streams.

Presumably the lame install is only required for MP3 streaming?

Thanks, Patrick

I've installed 0.97, mplayer pre0.6 and (in theory) the essential codecs
package.

Everything works but nothing plays.

The alien files are all present and correct, and mplayer is there and I can
play a m3u playlist file.

But I'm not sure about the 'essential codecs' package. I installed it using
rpm -Uvh, but when I query it with rpm -ql it says it's not installed. But
installing it using rpm -Uvh says it is installed! So I installed it
(again) using rpm --force ivh, it unpacks but then rpm -ql says it's not
installed :-(

What's going on? Where should the 'essential codecs' be in the filesystem
so I can check if they're there or not.

Thanks, Patrick

I second this as an excellent idea. It's a little annoying to have
something pop to the top of 'new music' when I edit a tag.

[slim] Server 6.0.1

2005-04-07 Thread Bennett, Gavin (LDN Int)
Title: Server 6.0.1

Last night - in readiness for my SB2 - I installed the 6.0.1 release.

Currently I have two Slimp3s (still going very well) and two instances of SoftSqueeze.  The installation was flawless and everything seems fine.  Below are a couple of very minor gripes - but otherwise everything is fab, well done Slim Devices & all contributors.

Using Softsqueeze gives a real feel for what the SB2 will be like and making breakfast this morning I was able to read the RSS news ticker on the kitchen Slimp3.

Well done again and please build a VideoSqueeze!  No one else could do it as well as SlimDevices.

Minor issues:
    1.  Softsqueeze decided to use different MAC Addresses so all of my settings were lost.
    2.  Softsqueeze (with JRE 1.5 & Java MP3) had a brief chipmunk moment when I 1st started using it
    3.  looks like the server s/w would allow me to select graphical screen savers for the Slimp3s.

Environment:
SlimServer 6.0.1 running on a dedicated Windows XP SP 1 800Mhz Athlon 640M RAM
    approx. 10,000 tracks
    100Mbps wired network
Softsqueeze run on separate machine to server.
