Re: [slim] Squeezebox2 firmware version?
How do I upgrade the firmware? When I first turned on the SqueezeBox2 it asked me if I wanted to upgrade. I think I pressed yes. The firmware is upgraded with the server version. You're on 6.0.x I guess. 6.1 will introduce access to the SqueezeNetwork which requires a firmware upgrade. As soon as you install 6.1 you'll be asked to do the upgrade. [slim] External USB HD Enclosures?
Leading on from the problems I'm experiencing with my current Slimerver 6.02 setup not synching slimp3 units (see: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?p=39632#post39632) I'm wondering if it is my old PC and if so what the cheapest solution is. One would be to use an external USB HD enclosure, slot in the 120Gb HD currently in my old PC (which contains all my FLACs) and attach it to my document server PC. Obviously I will need to load slimserver on to my document server PC but this would seem to be the most sensible solution. I can't simply slot my HD in to my document server PC as this has SATA HD attachements and my music HD is an IDE. Advantages would be loosing one PC plus if I go for a small enclosure I could take this with me if going abroad for a while and plug it into a laptop running slimserver and softsqueeze and have all my music with me. Any downsides anyone can see? TIA Beau -- Beau ___ Discuss mailing list Discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

Good network managment is to keep all servers logged out. This avoids Man in the middle style attacks. I know how to do it with squeezebox1, I can make a guess with squeezebox2. I assume you want to use flac decoding on the hardware itself. Create a file called 'slimserver-convert.conf' in the base directory of your slimserver install (in the same directory as convert.conf). In this file place these two lines: flc flc * * [flac] -dcs --force-raw-format --endian=little --sign=signed --apply-replaygain-which-is-not-lossless=a --skip=$START$ --until=$END$ $FILE$ | [flac] -cs --totally-silent --compression-level-0 --endian little --sign signed --channels 2 --bps 16 --sample-rate 44100 - Now restart slimserver and give it a try. Thanks for that. The use of an unusual character makes sense but hadn't occurred to me. I agree that a better solution is to support multiple tags of the same name. Hopefully this will be incorporated into SlimServer soon. Just to be clear, this support would be for FLAC and other vorbis-tagged files. A couple of comments: 1. a low-power, streamlined server dedicated to running SlimServer is a great idea but quite a niche market 2. If you assume that the target market would be technically-competent people (like many of us on here) then I would say that the prices you are quoting would mean that many people would just build their own server 3. If I were you I would consider offering no more than 3 sizes of drive i.e. 200GB, 300GB 400GB. The actual artists are listed in the browse artists display just fine, as far as I can tell. I am watching this bug though, as I'd like for this issue to be fixed because it's more accurate to list all of the contributing artists when playing a track -- not just the artist you used to browse to the track(s) or the first artist found. When I create .m3u playlists for albums I'll often leave out one or more tracks. Sometimes it's vocal commentary, sometimes bonus tracks that detract from the album as originally issued. An easy work-around would be to just leave the track in place, but give it a bogus non-music extension. Do a rescan (probably requiring a 'wipe cache') and the track won't appear in SlimServer and All Songs will skip it. A change in the firmware is what's needed from what I can figure out. [disclaimer - I am clueless so feel free to correct me as necessary]. Whether it's technically or financially possible for Slim Devices to do this with the current hardware I am unsure. Imagine a menu on the Squeezebox that lets you choose between Slimserver or Rhapsody or Musicmatch or Napster or Yahoo. The Rhapsody software itself can stream via upnp to a upnp enabled device that supports protected wma. No need for slimserver. The Windows Media Connect server software would stream the other subscription services to the Squeezebox. No need for Slimserver. All we would need, and again I have no idea how feasible it is to do this, is firmware that supports protected wma and is Windows Media Connect compatible. If you haven't seen it check out the demo movie here... http://channel9.msdn.com/ShowPost.aspx?PostID=13002 IMHO making Squeezebox 'Windows Media Connect' compatible would be the killer app. All of this could be done without losing any of the existing Squeezebox/Slimserver features we currently enjoy.
