Re: [slim] Is there a "tree" diagram for SB3?

2005-12-20 Thread Michael Herger

Those menus can be hard to go through without a roadmap.

As these menus are very dynamic (depending on your player settings,
installed plugins, music collection etc.) it's hard to give a globally
valid map. But you can get an impression of the main menu in the player
settings/menus. That's the place where you can add, remove or simply move
entries to your liking.

[slim] Extremely loud "white noise" from Squeezebox?!

2005-12-20 Thread Cleve

I tend to leave my stereo on while I'm gone, as I like some music
playing in the background when I return home.

As usual, today, I had my Squeezebox 3 playing the ambient station
"Bluemars" on Squeezenetwork when I left for an appointment. The
volume was set to maybe 60-70 db of sound level. Basically, background
or just above background. My McIntosh amp was only producing about
1/10th of a watt or less.

When I returned today, I could hear a roar from outside my house. So I
hurriedly went inside - One channel of my McIntosh amp had the meter
holding steady at nearly 200 watts, and the other channel has a steady
10 watts. The noise was deafening - it wasn't music - it was like
white noise with bass mixed in.

I thought at first my old Sansui receiver that's subbing for my pre-amp
(while my McIntosh is getting a tuneup) had gone on the fritz. A quick
check of other functions (AM, FM, phono, etc) revealed that the source
of the sonic bedlam was the Squeezebox itself. Changing stations
didn't stop the sound, nor did raising or lowering the volume control.

I tried powering the unit on and off with the remote. The noise did
not go away. I had been listening via analog connection, so I kicked
my HT decoder on. There was no output whatsoever from the unit's
digital co-ax output. Yet the analog outputs were still blasting out
the white noise.

So I unplugged the Squeezebox, and replugged it in a few minutes later.
Mysteriously, the sound on the Squeezebox returned to normal. That was
about 6 pm - I've had the unit playing continuously since then - it's
been performing normally.

Do I have a defective Squeezebox? Does it need to be repaired or
replaced?? I really don't trust it now, and I definitely WON'T leave
it on while I'm out ever again. I'm afraid of damaging my almost
irreplaceable Klipsch CF-4s.

Power-One makes a 5vdc 3A regulated linear power supply with +-.05% load

$36.95.

Another choice would be an International Power Open frame linear power

I use the handheld skin which is part of the standard slimserver
install, just put the word 'handheld' at the end of the url after the
:9000/ and it should come straight up.

Should work with any wireless handheld that can run a web browser. The
TX has version 4.3 of Palm's Blazer browser which works well. The only
slight annoyance I have found is that I have 4 SBs on my network and
the switching of the interface between showing info for the default SB
and one of the others sometimes does not "take". A workaround seems to
be to select Power Off for the default SB from the handheld and then it
will alow you to switch to looking at one of the others.

At the time I factory reset the SB2. Now I change the SSID if I am also
changing settings on my router, and make SB2 look at the "new" wireless
LAN.

Prior to that it found my router, but didn't get a sensible IP address
(should have been 192.168.1..., got something completely different) and
couldn't be pinged from another computer. Resetting the SB2 seemed to
clear the settings and it connected first time to the router after.

Oh by the way I was using WPA2/AES, not WPA2/TKIP.

Weather's great thanks, pleasant day today, about 22deg, gentle breeze.

[slim] Re: 108Mbps Support

2005-12-20 Thread Jim Holtz

Hi Al,

I have a SB2 rather than a SB3 connected to a Netgear WPN824 Rangemax
router. Here's what I'd suggest you try. Enable SSID broadcast, enable
auto 108, disable advanced 108bps features and extended range. They
really screw things up for some reason. Try connecting without any
security to establish a connection 1st. Then enable WPA personal which
I believe is the TKID or something like that. Do not enable WPA2.

That should get you going. Be really careful about any blank spaces
when typing in the password for WPA on the SB3. It's really picky and
is the source of many of the the issues/complaints, IMHO.

BTW, you'll love your SB3 when it's up and running. Vinnie's mods rock!
Check them out. :-)

Good luck!

Jim

I have seen "This is Spinal Tap" before, but I
just recently saw it again about 2 weeks ago and
that quote bears repeating for audiophiles:

From

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0088258/quotes

"Nigel Tufnel: The numbers all go to eleven. Look,
right across the board, eleven, eleven, eleven and...
Marty DiBergi: Oh, I see. And most amps go up to ten?
Nigel Tufnel: Exactly.
Marty DiBergi: Does that mean it's louder? Is it
any louder?
Nigel Tufnel: Well, it's one louder, isn't it?
It's not ten. You see, most blokes, you know, will
be playing at ten. You're on ten here, all the way
up, all the way up, all the way up, you're on ten
on your guitar. Where can you go from there? Where?
Marty DiBergi: I don't know.
Nigel Tufnel: Nowhere. Exactly. What we do is, if
we need that extra push over the cliff, you know
what we do?
Marty DiBergi: Put it up to eleven.
Nigel Tufnel: Eleven. Exactly. One louder.
Marty DiBergi: Why don't you just make ten louder
and make ten be the top number and make that a
little louder?
Nigel Tufnel: [pause] These go to eleven."

That pause at the end was pure comedic timing
genious! :-)

[slim] Re: Softsqueeze

2005-12-20 Thread mrfantasy

There seem to be some issues with Softsqueeze dropping out at times.
Symptom is that it basically loses sync with Slimserver. You can look
at the player status and they may not be on the same song. Sometimes
skipping tracks in the Softsqueeze interface clears the problem,
sometimes you just need to restart Softsqueeze.

I've noticed it's particularly troublesome with high CPU apps, or apps
that seem to take over the input queue for long time in Windows. I
don't even know if it's really a Softsqueeze problem per se, it could
be wackiness with my Java implementation, or problems with the Internet
connection at home or work.

It will probably work better with an external SB3 than with
Softsqueeze. If Softsqueeze and Slimserver are on the same machine
it's probably not a fair comparison.

I've got the same router and got it going fine (until I discovered my
laptop wouldn't support WPA2). I couldn't get it to connect at first,
it seemed that changing the encryption method but not changing the SSID
meant the SB2 retained a memory of the previous settings.

I found that performing a factory reset fixed it and it then connected
using WPA2 with no problems.

Since then, whenever I play with my encryption method on the router, I
change the SSID as well, which seems to make it easier to change on the
SB (also means that if I want to revert to previous settings, just have
to change the SSID again, because SB remembers the settings for that
SSID.

[slim] First Impression

2005-12-20 Thread dancarne

My SB3 set up without problems. I hooked it up via wire at first just
to make sure that Slim Server and the SB3 set up worked OK before
opening a wireless router I bought. Having WPA encryption was an
important part of my decision to go wireless.

So far, I am very satisfied with the product. While waiting for the
SB3 to arrive (it took 20 days after I placed my order), I got a little
nervous that the product might be buggy. So far it has been ROCK solid.
No issues at all.

I haven't done any serious listening yet, but what I've noticed is that
the stereo separation is very good. Additionally, everything I've
played has sounded good. What sounds good is the voices are very
distinct and nothing sounds too edgey. The bass seems tight. The
response seems flat, but I would say the highs are probably rolled off,
which is probably a good idea for digital playback. I have a nice
separates setup, so it will be interesting to hear what it sounds like
with some good recordings.

What surprised me was the how well the interface works. (It's hard to
anticipate before you use the SB3 how it will operate.)
It's really cool to pull anything out of your collection and have it
start playing quickly. There are so many customizations straight out
of the box, the SB3 has been a lot of fun to use. Also, I didn't
realize that I'd be able to use the Slim Server interface to select
songs and change volume. I like how the volume goes up to 11.
Somebody has a good sense of humor. I decided to have Slim Server use
iTune's library and playlists. So far, I'm not sorry. That's made my
life simple and I like that.

I also enjoy the Squeeze Network. I like being able to have fast, easy
access to music from all over the world. That's a nice feature.

I'm looking forward to some good listening.

Great idea, Steve!

Put the alpha keys on the soft buttons. Just did it: works

As a matter of interest, I have the three bottom macro buttons do the

encounter) need to manually change device. I guess that that means I
can use the soft buttons without things getting confusing, as the
devices get changed by the macros instead of manually. Now if I can

Re: [slim] Re: FLAC stops playing prematurely

No problem at all.The only mysterious thing for me is that when I encode the files, I use the -V flag to verify the encoding.  I wonder if EAC doesn't check the return code from the flac command when it kicks off the encoding.  I always review the output logs of EAC before assuming the files are good.
Anyway, this has given me an excuse to brush up on my Perl.  I'm going to write a program to run "flac -t" on every file in my library, to see if there are any other bad files lurking in there.

[slim] Remote setup at vacation home

Hi,

I've just bought a condo in ski country and I'm looking to set up
access to my music collection on my Mac G4 at home. I have a

How do I use a Squeezebox at the condo. Is there a wireless router
that can connect to a wifi network, then connect a wireless
Squeezebox?

End result is I want to listen to the music stored on the home
computer on my stereo at the condo, using a Squeezebox to control my

the hotel provides.

Any ideas. Much appreciated.

Nope! very frustrating among other issues as well that I will not get

Well, to diagnose I would have a look at what Activity Monitor says, and
also at SlimServer's Network Health.

From the little info you give, one can't say if you are having

network dropouts or if something is frequently using 100% CPU.

--
Daniel Cohen

Hi Daniel,

Sorry, I don't mean to give so little information, I really do want to
fix the problem.
If you can tell me which info you would like & explain to me how I go
about getting that info for you,I'll gladly do it, no problem.
If you can help, I'd appreciate it.

Oh, I'm no expert, just a long-time user. And when I said "I", I
meant that you should do so and report back.

This forum is full of people who know a lot more than I do, and if
you can give enough information someone should be able to help.

I'm always in favour of giving as much information as possible. Which
Mac, which version of the OS, which version of SlimServer, which
router (you did give that information).

You said "huge" dropouts, and I assume you mean that they occur
frequently, not that each dropout is of long duration. Is there any
pattern in the dropouts? For instance, do they occur at regular
intervals? There are processes that may use up a lot of CPU
(refreshing the Web browser, rescanning the library, etc). Dan Sully
suggested one thing worth trying. Triode suggested something else,
which will help to check the network.

The other suggestion I made was to turn on Activity Monitor (it's in
the Utilities subfolder of of the Applications folder), perhaps order
the processes by CPU usage, and watch to see if any process is
repeatedly showing up with very high usage.

Wired is inherently more stable than wireless, and it is possible
that some SlimServer related issues are always occurring but only
show up with a wireless connection. Oh, I've just seen your later
post. Originally you said it was fine on a wired network, so I
assumed a wireless issue, but your new message says there are
problems even running wired, which suggests a Mac issue.

You said "I can play back songs perfectly from my Windows PC." I'm
not entirely clear if your music is on the Mac, and whether you were
playing music on the PC (from the Mac), or whether you were running
the SB with a PC SlimServer.

Network issues are common, and can be caused by what is happening in
a nearby building or apartment quite easily.

I have an SB2 (previously an SB1) and as just one example of what can
happen I often lost sound when the microwave was on. But I changed my
wireless channel and have had no problems since then.

[slim] Re: Touch-Screen Remote?

2005-12-20 Thread Jeff

I'm the guy that wrote the module referenced in a previous message.
I've got to say, that is the coolest interface I've seen for the
Squeezebox as well. But I couldn't have done it alone. I thank
several others (Vincen, for his constant suggestions, Dom for his
wonderful touchscreen layout work, and perhaps most of all, Fred for
his tireless work on improving the CLI of the SlimServer software
enough to make my module possible). Not to mention some other really
good BETA testers.

The module that I wrote is for an AMX NetLinx system. You need three
components to use my module:

1. Some sort of AMX NXI controller. It can be an integrated controller
with I/R, relays, contacts, etc (very useful if you want to control
other A/V gear). Examples: NI-700, NI-2000, NI-3000, NI-4000. Or an
NXI with an ME260 master card. Or heck, if you don't need I/R, relays,
or contacts, then just an ME260 master card in a shell.

2. A wireless access point. Any brand will do.

3. Some sort of touchpanel. The featured touchpanel on the screenshot
is a AMX Modero MVP-8400, a handheld wireless 2-way touchpanel that
looks just great.

With that and a bit of programming knowledge, as well as the AMX
software, you can get something running dang fast. In fact, I have a
sample program that you can edit, download, and bring up in a very
short time period, assuming you have the hardware hooked up and
working.

Having an integrated controller is nice because then the system can
control the rest of the A/V gear. For example, volume would turn
up/down the volume of the A/V system. Select "Music", and the display
turns off. Etc, etc.

If you're interested in considering AMX (it's expensive, but it's damn
nice), I'd contact one of their dealers. You should be able to get
dealer referrals from www.amx.com.

[slim] Softsqueeze

2005-12-20 Thread Bruce S .

I haven't taken receipt of my SB3 yet so I test out ripped files and
other aspects of this technology by running Slimserver with
Softsqueeze. If I am doing any significant processing - I am ripping
and compressing with FLAC a lot - on my laptop while listening (with
headphones) I will invariably, just give it a little time, get serious
breakup of the playback and eventually actually stop playing
altogether.

I asked a question a while back whether or not the SB3 can perform
while my laptop's CPU and file system are extremely busy, since I
expect to be ripping and compressing well into '06 while listening to
my SB3. The answer came back that there would be no problem.

Now I am beginning to wonder. My only consolation is that softsqueeze
is competing for resources on my laptop whereas the actual SB3 hardware
won't be. However, Slimserver is also competing for resources and will
be when I get the SB3 hardware up and running.

Which is causing me the problem? Both interfaces are sitting there
acting like they are playing (running) fine even though no music is
playing.

Any thoughts?

Bruce S.

The harmony is a great remote - and it worked out-of-the-box (well,
off-of-the-website) on my SB2 with no modifications. I like your idea
about menu config, I haven't tried that yet.

Have you adjusted the timings at all? I sometimes have trouble
scrolling artist / album lists by only one entry at a time; however, I
was reading about a similar problem here and not sure whether it is an
issue of remote settings or SB software/firmware.

As for your CD and TV, I was able to work around the absence of
discrete power on my old tv and dvd (since upgraded). On the DVD
player, I discovered that the "play" button would turn on the unit if
it was off, so it was easy enough to map "On" to "Play" and "Off" to
"Play" plus "Power Toggle." For the TV, I found similar power-on
behavior with, I think, the input select button.

But when I'm streaming flac, the server side has no idea that there's anything wrong with the file.  So it keeps sending data to the player past the point of this error.  And I guess the player just plays what it is given.  Careful listening to native decoding of this track on the SB2 now does reveal a small hiccup at the point of the error.  I guess I just never noticed it before.

Do you only experience drop outs on the wireless network?
If so and you are using 6.2 - try downloading the NetTest plugin
[http://forums.slimdevices.com/showpost.php?p=66366&postcount=37]

This allows you to test the performance of your wireless link. If it
does not show 100% at the rate at which you stream - e.g. 1000bps for
flacs, then your problem is the network.

If this looks OK, turn on performance monitoring from the Server and
Network Health page, queue up some tracks to play and leave it for a

It appears that 'drivers' can periodically kick some timers in Windows
to reset the "yes, I'm busy, please don't go back to slep!"

I don't know if 'applications' can or can't. (Slimserver would have to
be able to call the DontGoBackToSleep() system call, assuming such a
thing exists, every X minutes if any of the clients was still in play
mode.)

I don't think the 'keep sql in ram' thing will help. If the activity
timer is based on 'driver' level things (ie, keyboard, mouse, etc) then
it will still go back to sleep. If it's based on 'disk activity' then
it won't go to sleep.

My guess is that for Windows, you'll have to manually sleep your
computer with a keyboard button, and that it won't be able to go back
to sleep on a timer -- that's what that knowledgebase article implies
to me.

And, yes, I think that's broken, too, but... I don't use Windows, just
got curious at how broken it is. :)

I'm running on 11g.

The unit worked pretty well for the first two months. Now absolutley

Well, to diagnose I would have a look at what Activity Monitor says, and
also at SlimServer's Network Health.

Hi Daniel,

Sorry, I don't mean to give so little information, I really do want to
fix the problem.
If you can tell me which info you would like & explain to me how I go
about getting that info for you,I'll gladly do it, no problem.
If you can help, I'd appreciate it.

[slim] Re: Dropouts on Mac

2005-12-20 Thread haikf

Same problem here with an SD2. I only have a Mac so I cannot compare to
the Windows platform. I set up the slimdevice in couple minutes, use
iTunes for the music. My router is the Dlink dgl-4300.
>From time to time the music breaks and SD2 is not very responsive, it
also takes time for the SD2 to respond to the remote control. When I go
on the Mac it takes forever to access slimserver.
After about 10 minutes it gets back to normal.
This happens reading directly AAC files on the Mac or getting a local
stream I create using Nicecast.
I downloaded and installed this morning Slimserver 6.2.2 and now the
SD2 got stuck couple times on the message: Cannot connect to
Slimserver.
After 30 minutes I unplugged the SD2. The funny thing is that when it
got stuck I could access the Slimserver on the Mac and it looked like
all was working fine but the actual SD2 was still non responsive to
anything.
I am losing patience here, I love the SD2 when it works but want it to
work for hours without any problem.
Anything I should try or look for in the Slimserver Network health or
anywhere else?

Yeah, but if they did put in a network adapter, or a slot for it so you
put it in yourself, similar to the hard-drive - you would have the best
of both worlds: access to the central repository, and if you want a
portable unit, the capability to insert a HD. Looks like the best of
both worlds to me. Looks like we need a little convergence between
what the SB does and what this does!
I wonder how the software works?

[slim] Re: SB3 Wont play FLAC Images with CUE files

2005-12-20 Thread gharris999

You might try checking the "FILE" entry in your cue files. Older
versions of EAC just put in:

FILE "cdimage.wav" WAVE

no matter what the actual image file was that EAC spit out. The newest
version of EAC puts in the correct entry.

I’ve got a whole suite of tools (win32) I’ve put together for managing
cue sheets for flac files. Mostly, they consist of a utility, fixcue,
that I wrote to "regularize" my cuesheets along with a series of batch
files to embed the cues in the flac files. I’m having no problems
playing these files in Slimserver 622 or 65 at the moment. Let me know
if you are interested in the tools and I’ll post a link.

[slim] Problems with Artwork (Itunes related?)

2005-12-20 Thread ELOOMIS
I was never very careful about artwork with Slimserver in the past.
However, I now own a video ipod and my CD collection has grown to well
over 500. So I decided to fix things (though I thought).

I configured Slimserver to use my itunes installation. That worked
fine. I then used one of the free itunes artwork importers. Ran it in
autoamtion mode and it fixed many of the tracks that did not have
artwork. The rest I did manually in Itunes by dragging and dropping
artwork from amazon.com.

Okay now I see my artwork in the now playing window and if I drill down
to a particular track on the left wind (in slim web client). Problem is
when I select 'browse by artwork' nothing shows. COnfused...any
suggestions are appreciated.

Hi Vdorta,

The threads I have searched seem to point at a slightly different issue
- that the PC will go back into standby after an XP setting of 2
minutes.

I don't think I'm having that issue, I am finding that the PC will go
back to sleep after the length of time that I have set in the
power-saving standby setup on the PC. That is, if I increase the time
before the PC goes to standby to 4 hours, I'll get 4 hours of SB time
before the PC goes to sleep. It's as if the PC doesn't register the
network activity of the SB.

2005-12-20 Thread Tempest

Tech Support and I recently worked through an issue with my SB2 and a
Netgear WG302 Access Point. Both had the latest firmware updates and I
was getting very bad drop outs in my audio. Unlike your problem I was
able to connect, but my audio was horrible. It winds up that the most
recent firmware in the SB2's and SB3's has a known issue with Wireless
routers/ Access Points that offer 108MB "Turbo Mode". I don't know if
your WG602 offers this, but if it does, change the WG602's Operating
Mode from "Auto" to "802.11G Only". This fixed the problem for me.

Hope this helps.

One of the main plus-points for me of the Squeezebox/Slimserver pairing
is that you only need your music in one place for as many players as you

Haven't seen this device mentioned here yet:

As the reviewer and review respondents note, all it needs is an LCD
(making it a iPod), and a wireless adapter (making it a squeezebox with
resident server software - no PC server required! needs FLAC support
though) Pretty cheap too - would be in the same ballpark as SB with
display and wireless added, I would imagine.
Any comments?

Now, back to the Wireless problemmy Slim has worked for 24 hours

Technically speaking, the UK is actually on WET (Western European
Time), which happens to coincide with GMT during the winter, but is
GMT+1 during the summer. There are some countries on GMT all year
round, I think most of them are in western africa.

I'll get my coat ;)

p.s. I've seen mentioned here that slim support will call you back if
you're overseas to save your phone bill. I don't know if that's always
the case but they have done it on occasion. Failing that I agree that
they could very easily save money with a Vonage account - I live in the
US but have a london-based number which calls directly to my home phone.
That way all my friends & family in the UK can call me at local rates.
Costs me virtually nothing.

They play fine in Foobar2000 and SB3 reads the cue and track info from

I thought the SB3 fully supported CUE sheet files and FLAC, so is it a
slimserver issue or is it a problem with my files?

This is my favourute way of ripping my CD's, i hope i can play them on
my SB3!

BTW, this is with WinXP home SP2 - SB3 - Slimserver 6.2.1

Did you take a look at Omron's G3NA series? See
http://dkc3.digikey.com/PDF/T053/1395-1397.pdf

Every model has a variant that can use 5V as a trigger, switched
voltages are 264 VAC or more, currents are 5A all the way up to 90A.

Note: for higher currents you need a heatsink.

Digi-Key has a UK webfront, so it should be readily available, at least
in the UK.

2005-12-20 Thread Michaelwagner

I think this is where the boys from Slim would say "call or write to
Slim support" - support at slimdevices dot com.

They are better equipped to help you with specific hardware problems
than this forum is.

http://www.slimdevices.com/su_tech.html

Perhaps it's unfortunate that the forums are listed second on that
page, and the support hotline near the bottom ...

RE: [slim] Re: How to i find the IP address for slimserver?

2005-12-20 Thread Dan Goodinson
Depends on how your network is set up.

I guess you have a router which connects all your
PCs/laptops/squeezeboxes to the web. They're all linked via the
network, and it's likely that a router will control all this. A
commonplace way to set things up is to have each network device given an
IP address by the router. But normally the address won't actually
change all that much (if at all) - even if you reboot.

If the slimserver software still running on the server? Does it
automatically restart when you reboot the server?

If so, use "ipconfig" again on the server to see whether the IP address
has changed.

RE: [slim] Re: How to i find the IP address for slimserver?

2005-12-20 Thread Dan Goodinson
If on Windows, and you launch a command window (looks like old-style
DOS) you can type the command "ipconfig" (and press enter).

You should see something like this:

Ethernet adapter Wireless:

Media State . . . . . . . . . . . : Cable Disconnected

Ethernet adapter Office:

Connection-specific DNS Suffix . : mydomain.com
IP Address. . . . . . . . . . . . : 10.10.98.169
Subnet Mask . . . . . . . . . . . : 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway . . . . . . . . . : 127.0.0.1

Ethernet adapter Bluetooth Network:

Media State . . . . . . . . . . . : Cable Disconnected

This is taken from my laptop. It shows 3 different "devices" that could
have an IP address. I've called my first one "wireless" although it
would normally be called "Local Area Network Connection" or something.

The IP address you are looking for is of the format xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx.
This means that it MAY BE 3 digits per block, but not necessarily. In
my case here, my office connection is currently connected. The IP
address is "10.10.98.169" (I've changed it a bit for security ;) but
that's the sort of IP address I'd be using for slimserver, for example.

So it doesn't HAVE TO be four blocks each of 3 digits. Each block can
have 1, 2, or 3 digits.

If you're on windows, open a command window and run "ipconfig". You'll get
a list of network adapters with their IP addresses.

If you're on Linux, use "ifconfig" instead.

So in fact, what you'd like to see is the ability to FF or REW through
AAC songs. This could be implemented without native AAC support. In
fact, I'm pretty sure it could be done entirely in the (open source) server.

SlimServer seems to successfully scan my iTunes library on the Mac.
I was hoping to purchase multiple Squeezeboxes to install around my

Can anyone help or advise ?

Well, to diagnose I would have a look at what Activity Monitor says,
and also at SlimServer's Network Health.

From the little info you give, one can't say if you are having
network dropouts or if something is frequently using 100% CPU.

Not that you would want to do it just for this reason, but many phone

just for international calls, with UK calls still on your usual

I was looking at other WAPs this morning, namely the LinkSys WEP54G. We

I won't buy one until the next SB3 firmware appears. Hopefully it will
then work better with the NetGear stuff.

Don't calls to the US cost about 3p/1.5p (using calling cards/ Sipgate)?
this is probably just as cheap as some of the numbers you have to call
for UK based support. At least you will know you will get in touch with
someone.

Got to be cheaper than calling NTL and waiting 60 minutes before you
are answered at 3p a minute?

Still a Skype/Voip free number would be great.

Only complaint... for some reason the MX-500 does not have standard
alpha labels on the numeric pad, so although I have the buttons
mapped, I still hit the wrong buttons most of the time. I need to
label them myself somehow, otherwise Lazy searching is going to be
very difficult ;-)

I put the numeric keys on the soft buttons, which I labelled with "ABC<"
etc (the arrow is present in each one just to differentiate between them
and the properly labelled buttons). I also have "add" and "search" soft
buttons, with the less-used brightness, shuffle, repeat etc mapped to
soft buttons on the second page. ("Now Playing" is on the hard "DIS"
button.)

I agree that it's a lovely remote. It's replaced six others for me; if
I could find discrete power codes for my TV and DVD player it'd all be
perfect (but the absence of same is not the fault of the remote, of
course!).

The UK is on GMT, not CET. US West coast is -8 hours from the UK, so
guess they are -9 hours from CET.

I'm surprised I've not seen companies offering any VOIP connections yet

Agreed. And I too am in the UK. Wonder if there's a pattern here, e.g.
the reliability issues arise with the UK frequencies/strengths ?

Mine has worked all night quite happily. So, once it works it works
well. The major battle is getting it to "connect to network". It sees
the network, and once it's connectd it works well, but it's the
"Connecting to Network" phase which upsets it. For me, anyway.

I've already tried entering the SSID manually but it makes no

Tried the full reset.
Upgraded the firmware on my router.
Turned off long range and Nitro.
Still got all security features turned off.
Tried the 6.5b1 firmware

I live in the UK so are using the Europe wireless setting. I presume
were the same as the rest of Europe, but there is a different set for
France.
Should there be a different wireless setup for the UK?

But still no luck.

Not happy as I've imported these direct from Slimdevices.
SB1 is a lot better.

My 11b vs 11g issues could be specific to the operating system snapshot
I was running (which has hung around for too long already). I've
promised to do more tinkering when I get around to it.

When it comes to support@ response times, I find that they tend to be
