[slim] Dlink ADSL Router with WiFi

2006-02-15 Thread Richard Scales

Hello all,

Does anyone out there have a Squeezebox 3 connected
via WiFi to a Dlink Wireless Router DSL-G604T?

I myself have SB2’s connected via a Dlink
DWL2000AP+ Access Point and have had complete success but I just set up a
Squeezebox3 for a friend. It connected OK initially but after 8 hours it lost the
network connection and it would not re-connect. The only way I could get it to
re-connect was to change the SSID of the router – it worked OK then for
another day after which it lost the connection again.

Using latest ‘standard’ release.

I also noticed that the Squeezebox would NOT connect
when encryption was set to WEP so we are currently not encrypted.

There are two PC’s in the same building that
connect via ‘b’ rather than ‘g’ though I do the same
here with a PDA in with a ‘b’ adapter without problems.

I would be interested to see if anyone else has any
experience with the Dlink DSL-G604T and a Squeezebox in Wireless mode.

Kind regards

Richard Scales

[slim] View Artist in Now Playing Screen

2006-02-15 Thread JohnQuirk

Hi All,
I know that I can modify "now playing" to show me the artist and the
track if I so desire, but very often this doesn't fit on the screen so
has to scroll around.

I think it would be a better use of the top line of the screen to be
able to have the album artist, rather than the text "Now Playing".

So instead of:

Now Playing (9 of 325)1:20
Pink Martini - Veronique

It would read

The Pixies (2 of 11) 2:12
Wave Of Mutilation

I think that the "Now Playing" text is redundant, I know that it's
playing, that's what the noise is... If the artist was more than (say)
20 characters it could be truncated.

Anyone think this is worthy of a feature request???

Thanks

John

[slim] SB3 Build Quality

2006-02-15 Thread MattH

I received my SB3 yesterday, after setting it up I noticed that the
bottom right part of the front silver screen was loose.

Looking at the bottom right hand side, the silver front panel is pushed
over the white bevel creating a 2 - 3mm gap between the dark and siver
screen components.

I'm getting back to the UK reseller, but it pretty dissapointing that
something this cool (and expensive) is let down by poor build quality
and/or quality assurance.

I think there was a quality problem in one of the first batches - it's not
an issue with all boxes. There was some talk about it in the forums.

[slim] Re: Can't Create "Tracks" Table with MySQL

2006-02-15 Thread indybrett

One more important thing. When I changed the script, I gave it a new
name. You need to keep the name as dbcreate.sql because the Slimserver
will apparently run the script again when you do a "clear library and
rescan". I did that and the slimserver.pl daemon crashed. I looked at
the database and the "tracks" table was missing again. After I renamed
the new script to be dbcreate.sql, everything worked fine, and no more
crashes.

Thanks again,

Brett

[slim] Re: Options for remote power on of non ir amp

2006-02-15 Thread oktup

You could try a oneclick power strip -
http://www.oneclickpower.co.uk/home.htm - it has one 'master' outlet
which controls power to all the others, depending on whether the
'master' is on or off. So turning off (on) the squeezebox would cut
(allow) power to the amp. I have one (for other purposes) and it's
great. The only issue would be whether the Squeezebox draws enough
juice for the oneclick to differentiate between when it's on and in
standby, if you see what I mean... if you can wait a week or two til I
get my SB3, I'll try it for you ;)

John Lewis sell them, I think £15-20 or something.

I'm not sure about that: those icons are a very recent addition. But Felix

I bought three of mine in the UK too but I found it easier to contact
slim support. Just over a week later I had 3 replacement panels arrive
direct from the US and now they look perfect. I guess your supplier
has had some slow moving stock.

I can't fault the service from Slim, they acknowledged the problem
(which a lot of companies don't) and quickly supplied the replacement
parts.

Looking at the MusicInfo plugin, it almost does exactly what I want, but
it doesn't appear to be able to print JUST the ARTIST, you can only have
ARTIST - TRACK.

I'd like to have this layout:

ARTIST - Current Time
Track

At the moment I have to have ARTIST - TRACK. Can anyone help me to
achieve this? I've had a look through the plugin but it's all a little
beyond me.

Thanks

2006-02-15 Thread Ben

A poll associated with this post was created, to vote and see the
results, please visit http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=21033

Question: Could a wireless enabled iPod overtake the Squeezebox as a
network music player?

- Yes - I want my wireless iPod yesterday!
- No - nothing will pry my Squeezebox from my cold, dead, hands!
- Meh - it could cause some defection but not kill Slim entirely...

I think the idea is not that you will have a remote for your iPod, but
that your iPod will be the remote for your stereo, so you pick a song
on your iPod like you normally do, and it will stream to your stereo
wirelessly instead of playing through the headphones.

Of course, this is all speculation at this point...

You can add the "ARTIST" format in the server settings, formatting. It
will then (well, after a restart or language switch...) be available to
the plugin.

[slim] Re: Can't Create "Tracks" Table with MySQL

2006-02-15 Thread jimwillsher

MyISAM is a memory-resident database, which is very fast. InnoDB is by a
third party, and offers more functionality (especially in a critical
situation), as it offers full consistency support, e.g. transaction
control. Slim is far from critical - if the tables go titsup you just
rescan your folder.

Inevitably there's differeces in syntax/features between databases, and
I think that's what you've experienced here. There should be no ongoing
implications though, as I would imaging that the SEELCT, ISNERT, DELETE
and UPDATE syntax will be pretty constant between InnoDB and MyISAM.

If you mean all-in-memory than you're wrong. There's a table type MEMORY

Michael,

Your code made sense to me too, but when it wasn't working I started
second guessing myself. Anyway… I still can't get it to work, neither
through the reg file or from MC.

I checked it in regedit and the registry file is merging properly, but
when I right click on a folder and choose "Play on Sqeezebox" (BTW, you
left out a U there), it asks me choose the program to open the file. I
choose "Perl command line interpreter." Then the command window flashes
on and off and nothing changes in the playlist when I refresh the SS Web
page.

In MC, I put:
Program Path: F:\Other\feedmyslim.pl
Parameters: --file="[filename]"

The command window flashes by real fast, but nothing changes in the
playlist.

I also tried putting wperl in front of the path in MC, but when I do
that I just get an error that the file can't be found.

SlimServer does run on the same machine where I execute the script, and
my music folder is K:\MP3. I noticed Fred reversed the slashes in most
of his examples, so maybe it has to do with that? I think I tried every
combination of slash and backslash, but never could get it to work.

did you enable the API in MusicMagic Mixer? This must be enabled when

[slim] Re: Potential Squeezebox killer? iTunes fans might think so...

2006-02-15 Thread DerekErb

A poll associated with this post was created, to vote and see the
results, please visit http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=21033

Question: Could a wireless enabled iPod overtake the Squeezebox as a
network music player?

- Yes - I want my wireless iPod yesterday!
- No - nothing will pry my Squeezebox from my cold, dead, hands!
- Meh - it could cause some defection but not kill Slim entirely...

I love my iPods and I love my Squeezeboxes... I wouldn't replace either
real quick.

As regards all the DRM comments as regards the iPod and iTunes I must
be an exceptional user in that I just use my iPod as an MP3 player. I
make all my MP3 files myself and upload them to my music library (which
is used by my SlimServer and the iPods).

However my iPod can't hold my entire music collection and I don't think
it will any time soon nor do I think I necessarily want it to do so.

But my iPod travels with me. It's portable. I don't want to have to
buy one iPod for travelling and several others I leave home so everyone
else can listen to the music library on the stereos around the house.

The quality, power and sound of what comes out of my iPod has never
come close to that coming out of my Squeezeboxes. I've plugged my iPod
directly in to my stereos, with old-fashioned wires, and it's still much
weaker.

A WiFi iPod? A great idea and it'll sell quite well. Is it a
Squeezebox killer? Don't think so... apples and oranges...

[slim] Re: Buffering and live streams

2006-02-15 Thread Triode

There is definately buffering of live streams but in playback mode the
buffer is not maintained in the full state as it is for playing of
local files. The comments in the health page are really trying to say
- if you see low buffer fill when playing remote streams this is not a
problem.

If you want to suggest any alternative wording to mean this then I can
consider it.

2006-02-15 Thread SoundBoy

Hi, as I learned the hardway my setup is far away from being "optimal"
as I only have a AT&T DSL in a popular living area in New England. So
in the morning my live streaming of Internet Radio is rendered useless.
In the evening its almost fine. I would love to see any possible
progress done on buffering or delayed streaming that might fix this. My
SB3 is wired to the Internet Gateway.

Cheers

Then the command window flashes
on and off and nothing changes in the playlist when I refresh the SS Web
page.

What happens if you run it from the command line:

pwerl feedmyslim.pl

I also tried putting wperl in front of the path in MC, but when I do
that I just get an error that the file can't be found.

Have a look at how it's done in the .reg file:

wperl m:\feedmyslim.pl --file="d:\path\to\your\music"

should work.

SlimServer does run on the same machine where I execute the script, and
my music folder is K:\MP3. I noticed Fred reversed the slashes in most
of his examples, so maybe it has to do with that? I think I tried every
combination of slash and backslash, but never could get it to work.

Use single forward slashes in the perl script.

make sure you restart slimserver with the API running. Slimserver

rescan a
lot.

It uses the file's last modified date/time. Because of the way it
works, it may be valuable to have a program that can set the last
modified time of files. I have one that's a Windows Explorer extension
that I sometimes use after editing tags. Some programs automatically
preserve the modified time. I think metaflac does this, and IIRC
flac.exe also stamps the same modified date/time on flac files as the
original WAV.

One (welcome) quirk of the NAS and tagging program I use is that when I
edit tags in files stored on the NAS, the last modified time doesn't
change, so I don't have to bother resetting them.

I wonder how hard it is to write a native DS app? It's already got the
wifi support. The browser method would be easier obviously, but it
would have all the usual browser problems.

With a native app, you could have the now playing info in the top
screen, and the navigation in the bottom touch screen. While building a
playlist, the playlist would go in the top, and the library in the
bottom. Map the arrow keys to navigate the list, use the buttons for
volume, etc. That would be so sweet.

2006-02-15 Thread Simon Still
I love my two squeezeboxes and i've just supplemented my iPod (2G) with a iRiver T30 because i was fed up with having a portable device that didnt have a replacable battery - i spent more time carrying it dead than listening to it.  I've not used the iPod since.  I wouldn't buy any DRM'd music and stick to open formats.
However, I think the iPod interface is supurb and iTunes is a good looking, intuitive, program.  It kicks the butt of WMP or Slimserver at the moment (though the lack of a 'current playlist' is a bit of a weakness).
Slimserver still comes across as hobbyware -  it's fiddly, unintuitive and inconsistent in the way it works.  Settings are hidden all over the place and it it's skinned and skins are, IMO, a terrible idea - 10 poor, incomplete interfaces rather than one good one.

make sure that you make that change when you have the server off.
prefs are written out as the server stops, so any change when the

[slim] Mindless scrolling of display on SB2

2006-02-15 Thread Fedder

Hi,

I'm running slimserver 6.2.1 on a FreeBSD box on my home LAN. The
FreeBSD box is acting as NAT-router, and the private net is connected
through Linksys switches.

I've got a squeezebox 2 running firmware 28, and everything works
rather perfectly until I connect a windows machine to the network. Then
the squeezebox starts to act exactly as though the keys on the remote
are stuck, which they are clearly not. The remote works perfectly when
there is no active windows machines on the LAN. -And I have tried
hiding the IR lamp in my hand just to be 100% certain!

I've used tcpdump to dump the network traffic on the LAN interface of
the server, and it does indeed look as though (at least to my eyes)
that the squeezebox is sending a packet to the server containing an IR
command roughly 100 times a second!

Now I must admit I havn't started debugging the Perl server process nor
read the specs on the slimprotocol, so I'm extrapolating here, but I
guess that the server never sends an ackowledgement back to the
squeezebox.

This in turn might be caused (further speculations on my part) by a
timing issue on the server or something. It is noteable that there is
no problems when I attach my work laptop to the LAN, which only uses
the server as gateway, whereas the problem repeatedly occurs whenever I
turn on one of my home PC's that connects to the FreeBSD box through
SaMBa.

The server itself is a 1GHz P3 with 512MB of RAM and a SCSI disk.

The slimserver software was installed via the FreeBSD ports system, and
it is running on Perl version 5.8.7 (Also installed via Ports).

The system does not to my knowledge display any other erratic
behaviour.

Here's an excert from the slimserver log with option "slimproto_d" on:

Attached are a Zip file containing a dump of the network traffic on the
internal interface, whilst experiencing the problem. It has been
captured with this command line:
tcpdump -i fxp0 -w dump2.dmp -s 0

advance from here.

I think only the fishbone skin has a link for this. it only appears

Rob

"stone cold bargain" is something of a relative term. The SB3
effectively does nothing more than what a Roku you can pick up for $149
does.

The primary things that justify the increased price of the Slim box are
the updated display and the "audiophile" quality electronics. For some
folks the native FLAC support seals the deal.

Remember, cost is relative. For something like the SB to really take off
for the masses it would have to be a heckuva lot less than $300. For not
much more than $300 you can get an actual PC running Linux.

[slim] New SB3 - Wireless Performance

2006-02-15 Thread Philip Meyer
Hi,

I just bought a SB3 as a replacement for my SBG in the bedroom. I'm a bit
concerned about the wireless signal strength though - I left the SB3 on the
Information -> wireless signal strength screen whilst I moved it around the
table to find the sweetest reception point, which seemed to give me a
consistent 49-53%.

However, a minute later the signal strength dropped to 2-16%. This lasted for
a minute or so, then returned back to 50%. A few minutes later it dropped back
down. This cycle seems to repeat.

I haven't changed anything in my setup, except I changed from WEP to use
WPA-Personal security, as all of my units now support this better security
mode. I tried a few different channels, but the effect was the same.

Could WPA explain the fluctuations, or could it be a problem with firmware v33
(I'm using the 6.2.2. release), or perhaps a problem with the wireless card in
the SB3?

Where exactly in SERVER SETTINGS will I find a button

it is not labelled "radio", it is a radio button. a radio button is a
circular input widget that has a value of TRUE or FALSE, changing when
you click on it, and blocking any other radio button that might be in
the same group. This is different from a checkbox which would allow
multiple items in a group to be TRUE, or checked. The use musicmagic

I can't be sure, but I think I read on the forums once that the SB
signal strength is not especially reliable. i.e. fluctuations aren't
too bad.

Litmus test - play some high rate music like a FLAC file for a while.
If the sound drops out, problem. If it doesn't, none.

I think that's a bit harsh, in my opinion. Although the intuitiveness
isn't close to something as *simple* as iTunes or an iPod, the
*-power-* that is acquired through Slim Server and a Squeezebox more
than makes up for it.

That said (and I could be going out on a limb here), I don't think Sean
ever *intended* the Squeezebox/Slim Server to be dumbed down to
iTunes/iPod standards. Sure he wants the company/products to be
successful (and sell alot), but the Slim Device audience is different:
it's audiophiles who want the finest in modern technology. The typical
iTunes/iPod owner doesn't care about Burr Brown DAC's or the
customization options available in Slim Server.

*-We-* do. ;-)

And as far as the skins comment is concerned...-now- I think you're
smoking something. Anyone who doesn't see the brilliance of the Nokia
770 skin is on crack as far as I'm concerned. ;-)

[slim] Re: Add songs via command line

2006-02-15 Thread MeSue

I don't know what 'wperl' in front of it, is supposed to do, but my
system doesn't like it. BUT I managed to add a song from the command
prompt, using this command:

F:\Other>feedmyslim.pl --file="K:\MP3\4 Non Blondes\1992 - Bigger,
Better, Faster, More\01 Train.mp3"

So that's progress! I still can't get it working in MC, though. I have
to break it up into "Program path" and "parameters." It doesn't work if
I put it all in one line or the other.

HOLY CRAP… I just got it! This works:
Program Path: F:\Other\feedmyslim.pl
Parameters: --file=[FILENAME]

(No quotes around the filename.)

So… That works fine for one song at a time, but what I was hoping to do
is highlight multiple files in MC and use Send To > SlimServer. When I
tried multiple files, though, it only sends the last 3 or 4. :-(

Thanks for helping me out so patiently.

The point is that the Slim box fits into the general computing
category. How many network appliances fetch $300 (answer, not too
many). Whether it is "expensive" or a "bargain" is obviously in the
eye of the individual consumer. Personally I think that the Squeezebox
is starting to creep out of the audiophile/tweaker closet and get closer
to being something that the masses will embrace (although it will
require much dumbing down of software and installation for that to
happen).

When that DOES happen more and more people will put the Squeezebox up
against products that cost 1/2 the price for the same basic
functionality (Roku, airport express, etc)... and it really won't
matter to them if the SB has a better DAC or extra outputs or a
slightly better display.

Personally I think that Slim should go the Roku route. Offer a very
budget conscious $149 Squeezebos "lite" that offers basic capabilities
at a fantastic pricepoint. Then price a souped up version with a
bigger display, higher quality DAC, etc, for $100 more. A deluxe
version could even do full multimedia have an HDMI output, etc.

I think that Sean and company have done quite well catering to the
geeks, tweakers and audio nuts, but at some point to keep selling
equipment they will have to cater to joe 6 pack.

How you extract that by selling to the masses Slim Devices is somehow
selling to "stupid americans" is beyond belief. I find it amusing that
so many people want Slim's products to remain their own little treasured
geek box that the world at large doesn't know about.

I remember when people that owned the iPod were considered elitest
because many people couldn't figure out how to load tunes onto it
(early iPods only had firewire interface)... Apple went with the
standard USB interface, made iTunes easier and easier to use and now
they have a massive success on their hands. I fail to see why Slim
would want to do any different.

[slim] Re: The only downside I've noticed

2006-02-15 Thread Jon

This has been a concern of mine since I purchased my first Squeezebox
last month ... I now own four of them, so obviously I am not overly
concerned :-)

I am surprised that nobody seems to have mentioned what I am planning
on doing, once I finish ripping all of my CDs ... which is, to create a
book for my family room (where the CDs are currently kept) containing a
catalog of all my CDs, complete with cover art. I'll probably have
about 8 albums listed per page, each with cover art, artist, album
title, genre, and maybe even all the song titles ... and will sort them
by genre (grouping similar genres together) and then artist name. I
might even maintain a separate book containing album covers only, with
maybe 50 covers per page. Then, whenever I want to search through my
collection for something to play, I can just flip through my own
personal album catalog.

I am actively searching now for applications that will make it easier
to accomplish this (suggestions, anyone?), OrangeCD and Music Label
2006 are the two that look most promising. In my early testing,
OrangeCD did a great job overall of pulling in all of the tags and
album art, and generating a report containing the basics (including the
album art) was easy ... but it is very limited in how you can arrange
that report. I have not been able to get Music Label 2006 to correctly
read my WMA tags yet, but it appears to have a very powerful
report-generating capability (including a seperately priced custom
report designer).

What I have not yet figured out is how to keep this book up to date
when I get new CDs, without having to reprint the entire thing (or at
least the entire genre) ... I am thinking about leaving some blank
space on every page, so I can just reprint single pages (for a while,
anyway) ... or, alternately, printing supplimental pages as I acquire
new CDs, then once a year or so reprinting the entire book.

Again, suggestions for better tools to use, or better ways to keep this
book up-to-date are welcome!

Personally, I LOVE the suggestion someone made to select music to play
via barcodes on the CDs ... I have a slight twist on that: there is a
Squeezebox plugin called DirectPlay that allows you to select an album
or track to play based on it's internal database ID. One could create
custom barcodes that map to the database IDs ... then "all" that would
be left to do is figure out how to have a wireless PDA-attached barcode
wand send (via infrared, I guess) the database ID # to the Squeezebox
... hey, this would work nicely with my catalog approach too!

Hello Jon,

I'm actually going to do this with my self-created DVDs with OrangeCD
(don't need to for CDs - as we will never use such a book to find/play
music).

I agree - the format for printing in OrangeCD is very limited. There
is a templating system, and it comes with a template editor, but I have
not bothered to try it. Some folks have made some very nice web
templates. You might want to look at its DAX editor.

I tried MusicLabel 2005 and 2006. It has serious flaws, and database
corruption. I've corresponded with the author several times, and while
he is very responsive, doesn't seem to understand the importance of a
robust database. After several trials, I gave up on the thing.

I also tried Helium Music manager - it is very good. It was lacking on
feature that was critical for me, so I didn't abandon OrangeCD for it.
You can customize its reports to your liking.

Without having duplicates or blank spaces, there will be no way for you
to insert a CD into the middle of your catalog, and not reprint pages.
You could of course have tabbed alphabetic sections, A, B, C, ..., and
then you'd only have to reprint from the inserted CD for that section.
