I guess it's several things:

1. Perl doesn't quite work like most of the languages I've learned
(BASIC, Pascal, Fortran, QBasic, VBA). It's more modern, more
web-aware.

2. The Internet resources out there really suck. They leap from
simple Hello world examples right into a full dissertation of every
command. There's no in-between. I'm used to a simple progression of
how to print something on the screen to looping to user input. It
stops right after looping - I don't see a way to create user input via
a prompt. Getting data from a file seems to be well documented though.
Frustrating.

3. Perl is extremely modular. There are so many CPAN modules it's
mind-boggling. This also discourages learning how to do these things
from scratch - CPAN has them all for you.

It's good mental exercise though, so I'll keep at it.

You gotta wonder if the Squeezebox design, with its total lack of user
controls and the goofy case designs, purposely came about so that it
did NOT resemble an Audiotron. Sometimes I'm amazed at the things
designers will do to avoid being labeled a copycat, often at the
expense of ergonomics and aesthetics.

2006-03-04 Thread Michaelwagner

If I understand the timeline, they co-existed in time. The minimalist
approach of the SLiMP3 was probably because that was all they could do
in a garage design (and it's quite impressive that they did what they
did).

Why the design continued that way when the SB1 hardware did have the
ability to handle limited key input and so forth is a bigger question.

The idea of a slim client is a good one ... let the stuff that is
dropping in price daily (compute power, memory, disk) be left out of
the design and supplied over the network. Unfortunately, such a design
implies that there are other people who will build the rest of it.
There are, but they're all geeks. No one has made a commercial success
of (and few enough have even tried) making a Slim Server box.

The Audiotron, for all that it wasn't as audiophile, was a more
complete solution and for that reason, appealing.

I'm not at all clear on what you are saying here. Making a slimserver
is trivial. At least as long as you don't expect to put it in
the living room with the rest of your stereo. You can use
any old PC and any old operating system, whatever you want.

The Audiotron, for all that it wasn't as audiophile, was a more
complete solution and for that reason, appealing.

For your needs, you can claim. Please don't make
such claims for me, the attraction of the
SqueezeBox is its slimness and open code. And
its ability to put the ugly and noisy PC in the
basement, far from my serious listening positions.

I can not understand why people want controls and buttons
on the SqueezeBox. That is what remotes, laptops and PDAs
are for. My SqueezeBoxes are far away from me, putting buttons
mice, touchscreens, etc on it is more than useless, it is
counter productive and will raise the cost for zero benefit to me.

Now on to the topic, I've got a Contour Shuttle Pro
that I set up as a controller for my recording studio
software. It is completely programmable. And it was pretty
cheap, about $90. Wired with USB. Lots of buttons, fast and
slow twist, jog wheel, etc. You'd need a trivial client
application to accept the input and feed the CLI port
of the SlimServer, but that would be fairly easy to do.

It's too bad I don't use my VCR anymore. This is a great feature of
the remote. It's got a nice tactile click/indent as you rotate it,
it's raised up enough that it's easy to access yet protected enough

The only drawback is it makes the remote VERY thick. See the second

I've also seen something like this on a model railroad controller:

[slim] Re: Ugh, coworker is buying a Sonos

2006-03-04 Thread Mark Lanctot

Gildahl Wrote:
I own a couple of SqueezeBoxes and just visited the Sonos site for the
first time upon reading this thread. the Sonos is definitely a cool
looking product (at 3x the price per station, it should be), but it
really is in a different category than the SB.

To me, the SB is more like a component that supplements an existing
system, whereas the Sonos is more like a high-end, self-contained,
whole-house audio system. Both can crossover and function in the other
role, but which one you buy really depends on what you're expecting and
 want to pay.

I picture the Sonos user as someone who wants to put a sound system in
a lot of rooms, many of which don't already have dedicated sound
systems. This user wants to be able to carry a (very impressive)
propritary remote around the house and control the music to the entire
house from wherever he/she is. This user also wants a turn-key system
with as little dependency on a server as possible.

On the other hand, I picture the SB user as someone whose main goal is
to stream their music collection to an existing sound system or
systems. Who tends to primarily play/control their music in one room
at a time. And who considers simulcasting to other rooms or the whole
house a secondary priority. This user also tends to be comfortable
having their music on a real server and considers it an advantage.

Judging from what I've heard, the sound quality of both systems is
otherwise comparable. Setup is probably a little bit more complex on
the SB, but I certainly wouldn't say it was difficult. So it really
comes down to how you intend to use the system that would determine
 one's choice.

If the Sonos and SB were the same price, I think I would still have
gone with the SB. I don't need more amplifiers, I like using my
universal remote, I really like the open-source server concept, and the
display on the SB units is exceptional. I can certainly see why the
Sonos system is compelling to some, but for me, it is not competition.
It's just another category of product.

Exactly!

The thing that turned me off of Sonos and towards Slim:

- cost

- no digital outputs

- included amplifier

- closed source

- cost (did I mention that already?)

But its approach would be appreciated by those with lots of money and
little time/desire for tweaking.

Hey, I have zero problem if you can convince Slim Devices
to go head to head with Sony and Panasonic and all the other
Audio/Visual vendors. However, there is no mass market
for audio-only products that are not portable. Zero.

The 'audio only' market is a niche, the mass market folks
are doing iPods and home theater.

I insisted on a remote for my Amp, until I got my SqueezeBox
and started controlling it with my laptop. And it is occasionally
handy to go over and turn the big volume knob down. I probably
do it once every six months. However, a big mute button
on the top of the SqueezeBox is all that I would ever use,
the knob twist part of the control is totally 70s 'hi-fi'
to me.

Still making the Contour Shuttle be a controller for the

Computers are not, yet, toasters. They take some setup.

Adding features and installation wizards may be appealing to
some, but I don't have any feeling if it would be good for the
product. The classic example of features is Microsoft Word,
which no one can use more than 20% of the features, and
most people use under 5%. With the hundreds of millions of
copies sold, the engineering cost is low, but the cost to me
as a user is unacceptable. For the volumes that Slim sells
SqueezeBoxes, adding features has costs that would have
to be passed on to me. Either in direct cost, or in
extended development times which means delay before
I get cool stuff.

I just don't see a SqueezeBox ever being a mass market device
no matter what the remote looks like or how easy it is
for Slim Devices to fix broken WiFi routers.

I'd love to know how many real world customers consider the
SqueezeBox and decide against it because the setup is too hard.
And of course, how easy would it have to be to convert what
percentage of those refuseniks to customers.

[slim] WDS network issues

2006-03-04 Thread danco

My Mac (OS 10.4.5) is connected to two Squeezeboxes wirelessly using two
Airport Extreme base stations as main and remote in a WDS network (the
Mac to main base station is a wired connection). By the way, my DHCP
server is my router, wired to the main base station.

Apple states (and I have tested this) that the network names of the two
stations in a WDS network must be the same.

So how can I tell which base station the Squeezebox is connecting to,
and can I force it to choose one over the other?

I think I previously had the stations with different network names,
which solved the issue, and that the requirement for the same name is
fairly new.

I am asking the question because I think the SB can see both base
stations and is actually connecting to the main one rather than the
remote, which leads to a much lower signal. The whole point of the
setup was to get a higher signal by connecting to the remote station.
The second SB gets a much higher signal, though it is very much further
from either base station (I suspect that it can only see the remote
station).

Not that the low signal leads to problems with music at present, but I
would prefer it to be higher.

[slim] NETGEAR model DG834PN WPA-PSK connection problem with Squeezebox 3

2006-03-04 Thread shinyspoon

Hello,

First post, new SB3 user, please be gentle..

NETGEAR model DG834PN Firmware V1.03.18 – Latest and only version
available.

SLIMSERVER: SlimServer_v2006-03-04.exe Firmware version: 35

WINXP SP2 fully patched, new install.

Successful connections using:

Disable - This will disable the security function. Data will not be
encrypted before transmission.

WEP - WEP (Wired Equivalent Privacy)
Authentication Type: default value of Automatic.
Encryption Strength : 128-bit encryption

If I use WPA-PSK Security Encryption I am unable to connect and get the
following message:
“Problem: Can’t connect to wireless network.”
“Press LEFT to go back, RIGHT to try again.”

Simple Network Key: 12345678

From the NETGEAR Wireless Settings Help

For WPA-PSK, you need to enter the Network Key here. The Key must be
from 8 to 63 ASCII characters. Your Wireless Stations must use the same
key.
WPA Encryption:
Currently, only TKIP is supported. Ensure your Wireless Stations are
also using TKIP. Normally, this is the default. If there is no choice
of encryption methods for WPA-PSK, then you can assume TKIP will be
used.

I sent this to '[EMAIL PROTECTED]' and also posted here,as I
found others with similar problems.
Should I also post a bug report?
Does anyone have any ideas on this and how to debug the WPA connection
problem?

Thanks
Shinyspoon

[slim] The SqueezeBox Audiophile Solution

2006-03-04 Thread Masterbaron

Many have questioned why SD doesn't market an audiophile form factor
SquieezeBox - there's been much talk about this and even I was posting
in the past hoping for a positive response.

SD maintains they need a mass market device and yes, they have one but
audiophiles have championed the 19 rack standard and so have I. At
some point it becomes clear the perfect solution for SD is to sell
their existing SB's in a disassembled version with long leads for the
display (this minimizes any new production costs and offers audiophiles
just what they need a DIY SueezeBox Installation kit).

I've attached some photos of my SB2 installation which involved
purchasing a 2U rack panel, (1) rack shelf for the SB components,
measuring the display cutout requirements and having a machinist laser
cut the hole and score the panel. Not even a days work!

For those of you who absolutely don't want to open the SB up to remote
the display you can simply sit the SB behind the panel (requires making
very accurate measurements for height and width including those rubber
feet). Your choice of filters should take into consideration the
exiting SB filter and your lighting environment.

I think you'll agree this is a solution even an audiophile will love.

Next up - many of you have complained about the SB remote. We should
keep in mind this is a network device which means if you really want to
talk about a comprehensive solution purchase a Bluetooth PDA (i.e. Palm
LifeDrive), Salling Clicker (remote client) with SlimServer and the SB
- you'll be able to do nice things like everything from the PDA
without needing line-of-sight to talk to the SB. You'll also be able to
control lights w/Indigo, iDVD, iTunes, iPhoto and the whole freakin
world.

Once we put into perspective the SB firmware is updatable, the software
is Open Source and they still use screws to hold the SB together we can
do just about whatever we want..

Enjoy

Thanks, that did it. Just set the main base station to only accept the
remote station, not the SB.

Had to go through the setup again on the SB, at first it couldn't find
the network. But now it is getting a sensible 80% strength while before
it was hovering around 20% (the more distant SB had around 60%).

Just FYI Mark. in Unix, everything is a file... except, of course,

To talk to the user in a simple way, open standard input as a file and
get lines from it. Likewise, you print to standard output.

This is primitive and ugly, but it should work for simple stuff.

Hmm. It's just really confusing.

In BASIC and FORTRAN, you can have the program pause with a prompt for
user input. This makes learning the languages easier - you can enter
custom strings and values.

I'm still in the early stages with perl, but at this point in the
process I would have already seen something about how to do this...

[slim] Stream CD Audio from CD-drive without ripping?

2006-03-04 Thread richidoo

Is it possible to play a CD live through SB? I envision putting an
Audio CD into the CD-ROM drive of the slimserver host PC, or other
network shared CD-ROM drive, then stream it through SlimServer so that
I can listen to it on my main system where Squeezebox is installed.

As it is now, I have to rip every new CD I buy before I can listen to
them (I am very lazy). I also have to store the ripped music on my
harddrive, which for CDs I rarely play is not efficient. When friends
come over to listen to music, I have to rip their CDs before I can play
them, and that is inconvenient, and I always wonder if they think I am
stealing their music which, of course, I am when I rip it to my hard
drive. I want them to fall in love with the sound, convenience and cool
factor of Squeezebox too. Making them wait half hour while I rip 10 CDs
to 5GB of drive is not a good first impression.

Since Windows Media Player, iTunes, MusicMatch, and probably a million
other free software players can all stream PCM audio directly from the
CD-ROM drive to PC's audio driver without ripping, and since Slimserver
can already stream PCM to Squeezebox, it seems to me that all the pieces
are in place to be able to stream CDs 'live' to SB from a CD-ROM drive
through slimserver.

Maybe there is some legal impediment to this scheme, because it seems
like this is not a very original idea on my part...

I think all you would have to do is add a section in the server setup
dialog to declare CD-ROM drive letter or URL sharename, then add a menu
selection on SB like Browse CD-ROM.

I think such a feature would really enhance the enjoyment of the
Squeezebox for many people. It is really the only major negative aspect
of switching to Squeezebox as my main player, I can't play CDs directly
on it.

OK now comes 40 responses containing links to existing plug-ins, pages
in the manual and workarounds that allow me to play CD's. This is the
best audio forum on the net!
Thanks
Rich

2006-03-04 Thread richidoo

I got his in my Inbox yesterday. I don't even know what the hell Pandora
is, but it seems this marketing email from Patrick did not get much of a
reading. Posted in its entirety below:

Dear Slim Devices Customer,

We're excited to announce that we've added support for Pandora, an
amazing music service, to SqueezeNetwork for Squeezebox2 and
Squeezebox v3 owners.

Pandora is a music discovery service that lets you create custom
stations
based on your favorite songs or artists. If you haven't experienced
Pandora, I recommend that you visit http://www.pandora.com and try it
out
on your computer.

The first time I used Pandora on my Squeezebox, I was glued to my
listening chair the entire weekend. Since Pandora is part of
SqueezeNetwork, you can even listen to it without your computer being
on.

To try it out with your Squeezebox, log on to
http://www.squeezenetwork.com/ and sign up for a trial Pandora
account by
clicking on the Pandora link on the top-right of the page. Then use
your remote to connect your Squeezebox to SqueezeNetwork and browse
into Pandora Radio.

I have more good news. Squeezebox v3 and Squeezebox2 owners can
listen FREE to Pandora for 90-days. US-based customers can continue
their Pandora service for only $36 per year.

This is truly a killer app.

Cheers,

Patrick Cosson

P.S. If you're not in the US, please feel free to recommend local
content providers that you think would make great partners for Slim
Devices.

[slim] Re: The SqueezeBox Audiophile Solution

2006-03-04 Thread richidoo

Nice job, Masterbaron! That must have taken a hunk of time to get it all
integrated and packaged so neatly.

I like the look of the stock SQB3 myself, but you are right - there is
a need for a rack mount player. Pro studios could use a player that can
play all compressed formats with excellent quality, and for easy
reference to archived work on a network server. This avoids having to
fire up Logic Pro or whatever battelship audio program just to hear a
clip from another project, or just a reference CD as in during mix down
or mastering. There is usually plenty of useless junk in those studio
racks, a Squeezebox would get a lot more use than some tube flanger or
old rack mount FM synth.

I think you have the basis for a new business! Make sure you use a
great internal power supply!

[slim] Re: Stream CD Audio from CD-drive without ripping?

2006-03-04 Thread snarlydwarf

Media players don't really stream the PCM from the CD.

What they do is tell the CD Drive, Please Play, and adjust the sound
card's CD input for audio. (There is a little 3-pin wire that runs
from your CD drive directly to your sound card.)

The OS never actually sees that audio so has no way of passing it back
to slimserver. It doesn't even really go through a 'sound driver',
just that little 3-wire cable straight to the sound card.

[slim] Re: Yes, SB2 as alarm clock

2006-03-04 Thread Malor

Open standard input, as a file, for reading. Open standard output for
writing. It's possible perl may have automatically done some or all of
this... I'm NOT a perl expert by any means.

There's a function that gets a line from a file. Use that function on
your new filehandle. That pauses, waiting for a line to be complete...
ie, the user hits enter. (or control-D, the Unix EOF character).

Process that line. Print results to standard output.

Repeat if necessary.

In BASIC, you had:

INPUT Give me a value,A$

I can't give you the exact perl syntax because I don't use it much, but
you do it in two steps:

Print Give me a value to standard output;
Get a line from standard input.

This is actually an extremely powerful way to think about the problem,
as is nearly always the case in Unix. This means that you can run your
program just as easily from a file as from a user. Script up some test
cases, dump them in a file, and redirect from that file to standard
input. Your program neither knows nor cares that it's actually
talking to a file, to a network socket, or to another program. It's
just input.

Many of the conventions will seem very strange, coming from
microcomputer languages, but there's good reasons for most things.

Perl is a rather ugly language; I don't care for it much. If you're
trying to learn enough to work on SlimServer, you're stuck with it, but
if you just want general Unix scripting, many people prefer Python. Or
you can just use bash... the shell itself has a very powerful, albeit
somewhat arcane, script language.

You might look through the O'Reilly books. Remember that when you
learned BASIC and FORTRAN, you probably bought books to do it.
Documentation, sadly, must often be paid for, even when the program
itself is free.

[slim] Problems Scanning large library in OS X with SS

2006-03-04 Thread Christopher Biscoe

Hi,

I was an old SB2 user that eventually abandoned it because of chronic
issues with the box and the server software. This was about 9 months
ago. Recently, lured by both Squeezenetwork (generally) and Pandora
(specifically) I jumped back in and bought 2 lovely new black SB3s.
Connecting to the Squeezenetwork is a breeze and Pandora works
brilliantly.

Problem I am having, and it was an intermittent problem before that
seems to be worse now, is scanning. I have aa large CD collection
and about 2500 are ripped to two Buffalo SAN boxes (which I highly
recommend after being burned by LaCie, TWICE). When I scan, I end up
with 340 albums and 602 songs by 216 artists. Many albums are one or
two songs long, despite having the entire album available on the SAN.
My Itunes database is correct, and everything is fully playable off
of the Mac (that is, I have tested that the music is still there in
Itunes with success). To begin with, I have just instructed Slim
Server to reference my Itunes file, rather than going through the
trouble of mapping the drives in SS (although I can be persuaded
otherwise). Am running 6.2.1 Slim Server (which seems to be the
latest version, unless I have missed something on the slimdevices
website).

I am running a Dual 2.5 Mac G5 (latest OS X) with 4gb of ram. Any
help would be greatly appreciated. I am very excited with the look
and performance of the new boxes (and have already helped sell two
more to friends through my enthusiasm), but this problem definitely
rubs some of the polish off of my experience, and any help you can
provide would be dearly appreciated...

I don't know. Does anyone know sales numbers for the SB3? We could
subtract the complaints that come up here from the total and take a
guess.

Computers are not, yet, toasters. They take some setup.
But we're not talking computers, we're talking Squeezeboxen.

People buy the squeezebox thinking it will just work.

I think someone said a few weeks ago ... I thought I was buying an
audio product, not buying into a development project.

For the volumes that Slim sells SqueezeBoxes, adding features has costs
that would have to be passed on to me. Either in direct cost, or in
extended development times which means delay before I get cool stuff.
So make the install wizards modular and you don't have to run them. Run
the Developer's nightly version with all the cool features that are only
half checked out. But I don't think usability features have to delay
cool stuff. If Slim puts the staff into better testing and QA. Which
they seem inclined to do, since they just hired in that area.

I just don't see a SqueezeBox ever being a mass market device no matter
what the remote looks like or how easy it is
for Slim Devices to fix broken WiFi routers.

Perhaps not, but even *somewhat* more mass market might well drop the
price a hundred. That would be nice. And might get more people working
on cool features faster.

I'd love to know how many real world customers consider the SqueezeBox
and decide against it because the setup is too hard.
Yeah, that would be a hard thing to find out unless Slim told us the
results of their internal research (which seems unlikely).

No the perl script complains about the XML:Parser not being compiled -
when you run the suggested perl script to compile it, it complains
because you need make and gcc installed. So part of what runs is
actually compiled on the platform.

2006-03-04 Thread Browny

Ok - downloaded it and it worked first time. I'm now very happy - one
of the downsides to switching to MySQL was loosing Moose. Thanks for
all your efforts

Just a question for the future - If your running on MySQL is there any
need to snapshot the whole database into a moo file? I appreciate in
the past this was necessary due to SQLite locking issues. MySQL takes
that limitation away and its also a lot quicker as well.

Could a future version just use the database directly?

Well it seems to be resolved with v0.25 of Moose. It's been playing all

Did you decide not to progress getting the track number displayed on

If I may also make a suggestion re. 'now playing'it would be nice if F5

[slim] Sonus pretty controller!!!

2006-03-04 Thread Timbo

Have just been to the Bristol hi-fi show and it looks like Sonus are
bringing out a streaming device along the lines of SB that doesn't have
built in amps (thier existing system is more a multi-room solution) but
still features their incredible hand held controller...now that's
interesting.

I also wonder is there a handheld PDA or something that could do the
same job for SB3 or a future Squeezebox? I have such a job reading my
SB display from across the room - and when you put it in large type its
awful! The Sonus controller is exceptionally cool (although it costs a
small fortune I think!)

Question: Do you have a 770?

- Got it
- Want it
- Need it
- Forget it

Michael Haan Wrote:

Fair enough - so, how does the 770 stack-up against a PPC for power
 consumption, and for response time?

Have had the 770 for several weeks.

Batteries: If you're using it mostly as sb remote the batteries last
for days (if you're doing a lot of web browsing they still seem to last
longer than you would want to be browsing during the course of a
day--I've not yet had the batteries run out during use (as happened
often with me for a laptop) and I've been using it a lot as a
browser.).

Response time: if you haven't been using it for hours or days the
screen is 'on' instantly but there is 5-10 second delay to get the wifi
re-connected (shuts off automatically to save battery power). Once wifi
is connected response time from page to page etc. is virtually the same
as on one of the computers connected to the same network (that is to
say for practical purposes very fast).

(if it's useful my points of comparison are (a) a blackberry which I
love for email but nothing else (b) a dell axim v50 which worked ok as
a sb remote except boot time was too long and it was too unstable(c) wxp
laptops which I used and still use, based on where I happen to be at the
moment, to control various sbs and (d) the audiotron, whose remote was
just as bad as the sb remote but which had the late, lamented 'knob'...
but that's a whole 'nother story)

[slim] The Audiotron Knob, Wheel Mice etc

2006-03-04 Thread Michaelwagner

From time to time this comes up, as it did earlier today in this thread
http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=19369

cshaida Wrote:
the late, lamented 'knob'... but that's a whole 'nother story

I'd like to renew my request for this kind of interaction.

To recap, the late, lamented Audiotron was also an ethernet based music
player. It had a number of (in hindsight) poor design tradeoffs,
including a built-in server that was too slow and was not upgradeable
(let this be a lesson for people who think the SB should have the
server built in).

However, it did have one thing that I sorely miss on the SB, and so
does practically everyone who ever had an audiotron ... The Knob.

The knob was basically, well, a knob, but it was tied into a pulse
encoder, so when you twiddled it, it sent a stream of pulses saying
turning right or turning left to the software.

Based on what mode the Audiotron was in, that meant variously change
the volume or scroll through a song list or scroll through options
or one of several other things.

It basically worked like the up and down arrows on the SB remote,
except that you could send a whole bunch of them at once, the display
moved, and you got immediate feedback. A lot like a wheel mouse, if
you've used on --- you can use it to scroll, zoom or pan, depending on
how the software choses to interpret the pulses.

It seems like such a simple thing, it was a simple thing, and yet it
made short shrift of exactly all the things that iritate me about
interacting with the SB through the remote.

Now you can't put a knob on a remote without turning it into a 2 hand
remote, but I have seen remotes with knurled knobs that do essentially
the same thing. I had a VCR with one years ago (the VCR died, so I
threw out the remote, so I can't include a picture, but the remote was
fine and had no knurled-knob-life issues).

This came up some time ago, and at the time someone (I think Michael
Herger) had pictures of a USB knob he'd built for testing purposes. The
interaction ease this brings needs to be experienced to be believed.

So I renew my plea for an improved remote that has this function, along
with the software support to react quickly enough that the interaction
works properly. I guess this will need Slimserver 7, according to the
roadmap, so the server will respond to the pulses fast enough.

[slim] How to Edit Radio station to display Call Letters?

2006-03-04 Thread jimbob67

Hello, I have only been using my Squeezebox for a few days and really
like it! I feel stupid for not figuring this out, but have searched the
FAQ's and Forums and haven't been able to find an answer.
I have used the Internet Radio function to tune in an AM station from
my old home town, KFAB. The URL, which works fine, is
http://tinyurl.com/jx7xm

The problem is, the URL is exactly what is displayed as the title, both
on SlimServer and on the Squeezebox display. I added it to my favorites
and can find it and remember what station it represents, but I'm
concerned that once I add a few more of my favorites I won't be able to
recall what lengthy URL represents what station.

I was hoping there was a way to edit the Title of the station from
the URL to just the call letters. I've been right-clicking everything
like crazy but no luck.

I'm sure that someone will give me an answer that will definitely give
me a D-Oh! moment, but I'm not concerned about pride anymore!

Thanks for your help!

Jim

The Sonos approach has its drawbacks as well. One generally has fewer
remotes than music players (they're 400$ each, so most people have only
one or two) so you'll find that you're carrying the thing around with
you a lot and they're neither small nor light. Also, even though they
are somewhat ruggedized and splash resistant I still don't think I'd
want 400$ remote controllers in a home with children.

[slim] Re: Is there any way to run Pandora through SlimServer?

2006-03-04 Thread Malor

That certainly doesn't appear to be the case... when streaming from a
server under my control, the connection count goes up by only 1 when
streaming three devices. And I see only one TCP connection in my
firewall.

Now, it's possible that it's multiplexing three streams over one
connection or something like that... I don't have any easy way to
measure the bandwidth being used. But given how it looks, it strikes
me that the sensible solution is to conclude that it's downloading the
original stream only once. That's how I'd do it, if I were writing the
software, and I presume the Slim guys are smarter than I am. :)

As far as the Pandora thing... I searched on Pandora, but I don't see
any conversation wrt Slimserver integration. Can you give me a

That's what the Now playing screensaver is for. By default it kicks in

further than this or you'll find yourself in the Now Playing mode more

Question: Do you have a 770?

- Got it
- Want it

I have an ipaq 5450 and considered using it to drive my slimserver, but
abandoned the idea in favour of the 770 for the following reasons:

1) WLAN support is flaky at best. Next to non-existent support from HP
on this issue. Real problems with firmware upgrades.
2) As stated, I have a bad memory and forgetting to dock the Ipaq means
that I have to restore from a backup (this also means I am forced to
participate in the how to copy and paste tutorial every time.
3) It's an MS OS! Given that, I usually need to reboot my Ipaq at least
once a day if the WLAN is activated. I'm a Linux bigot, but given years
of experience in this field, I'd choose a Unix based system over one
based on MS for *any* purpose - except playing games.

As well you should, it really is quite lovely. It's tantalizing in a
concept car sort of way. If you build one that somehow works directly
with the sb, I'll buy 3(!)

The issue for me is not so much the 'remote-ness' (770+ben's skin
pretty much 'solves' that problem for me) as it is the need for a
control mechanism/device when I'm standing right in front of one of the
sbs. It's a pretty common experience for me to be right at a sb and
want to turn it on/off, change volume, or just search for new album
and...have to look around and then walk somewhere to get the remote to
do so. Oddly frustrating.
