[slim] Re: Qnap TS-101 Update

2006-03-13 Thread Trumper1

It is worth saying that I had absolutely no trouble with the copying
stage, just short of 100gb all in one go. Took a long time though. Mine
is a 400gb unit. All done over ethernet via my Devolo plugs. perhaps
there are some issues with the 300 & 500 being very sensitive to
particular hard drives??

2006-03-13 Thread Trumper1

I made no adjustments to my system before the copying ie no port
forwarding added and firewalls left on. ZA Pro on donor machine and the
Linksys router firewall also on.

I think I may be being a bit thick here but I still don't understand
why my Squeezebox can see all my files on the TS-101 but the server is
not actually streaming them. The slimserver says its to do with not
blocking port 9000 but I don't see why port forwarding needs to be set
up when all this stuff is inside the network behind the router.

[slim] Re: Handheld controller like Sonos?

2006-03-13 Thread moby_uk

The Nokia 770 with Ben's skin is a fabulous solution. You can cue tracks
from any room in the house, start the playlist *then* go and surf the
web/play games/sort your email on it.

The skin is very professional - I tend to leave mine running on the now
playing screen, so I get album art etc.

With the 770 selling at £220 in the UK, compared to 350 for the sonos
and a free skin, it's a nice (relatively) cheap solution.

I think I volunteered to do that wiki entry. The problem was as you say
(and was discussed in that link to that other discussion) there is no
consistent logic and also a number of bugs in the implementation.

Frankly until someone from SD comes back and clarifies exactly how it
is supposed to work and the bugs for WMA files are resolved I don't see
any point in creating the wiki entry.

I suspect the lack of action is due to the apathy amongst SS users.
What I suggest you all do is vote for the relevant bugs and hopefully
with enough weight behind them they will be resolved.

Hi all,

There does seem to be a common problem writing files to the Qnap, that
doesn't seem to have affected the 400Gb units so far. Reading doesn't appear
to be a problem however.

I have now spoken to Paul at Progressive who is currently at Cebit. He will
be returning tomorrow late afternoon and will contact everyone as soon as
possible after that to discuss the way forward. He is also liaising with
Qnap as to the best way to resolve this unfortunate issue quickly.

We would both just like to reassure everyone that this will be addressed as
a matter of urgency and resolved before any further devices are shipped. If
you have details of your problem, please inform Paul directly at

[slim] Re: "Album Artist" versus "Artist" behavior

2006-03-13 Thread rbl

I have a Creative wireless which is hopeless and I was therefore going
to buy a squeezebox. The Creative has the same album/artist problem.
But why don't they just add the ability to the squeezebox to search by
either artist or album artist (as well as genre etc...)? Surely this
would be a very simple tweak and would fix the problem without having
to mess with 3rd party ID tag tweakers?

I submit that we know quite a lot about the behavior, and that having
this information in a wiki would save people a lot of time and angst;
when I was trying to debug this for myself, I spent hours wading
through way too many forum entries trying to piece together how to make
"various artists" work ... and eventually stumbled on a post that
mentioned the WMA bug.

What do we know:
1. How we think it is "supposed" to work, as described earlier in this
thread.
2. The code is buggy, so it may not work as you expect it to.
3. If your files are WMA, it will definitely not work as you expect it
to.
4. The first step is to set "Group compilation albums together" and
"List albums by band" ... and pray.
5. If that doesn't work, use T&R to set the "Compilation" tag, or
create an arbitrary tag if you are using another tagging tool.
6. Once you've done this, you need to rescan, but rescanning for "new
and changed" music does not always work so it is better to "clear
library and rescan everything" and best to just stop slimserver, delete
the cache, and restart.
7. Some non-compilation albums still have multiple artists and may
cause you some grief (which was the original question posed in this
thread).

I think the above (with more details added) all belongs in the wiki,
which can be modified in the future if things ever get better.

OK, so maybe I do know enough to write (or at least start) a wiki entry
on the subject after all ...

[slim] Re: Help with organizing files

2006-03-13 Thread TorbenGB

I highly recommend using www.MusicBrainz.org and the helper application
that you can download from that homepage:
http://musicbrainz.org/tagger/index.html

It will scan all your MP3 files and set the ID3 tags correctly. Now you
know what the songs really are, in case they were named/tagged
incorrectly.

It can also (if you so choose) move the verified MP3 files away from
their current location and into a directory structure that you can
configure. So if you have everything in "C:\unsorted", it can sort your
files into "C:\sorted\artist\album\title.mp3" or whatever you like.

I have used it on my 15.000 mp3's with great success. Only downside is
that it only works with mp3, not WMA.

[slim] Suddenly can't connect to web ui from networked computer ?

2006-03-13 Thread Siduhe

Has anyone got any bright ideas on the following:

I recently set up a dedicated music server running slimserver on XP,
wired connection to router, static IP "192.168.0.104". I also have a
laptop which connects wirelessly to the router.

When I logged in this morning, I could access the web ui on the
dedicated server via localhost:9000 and on the laptop via
"192.168.0.104:9000".

Suddenly, I can't access the web ui from the laptop - the connection
just times out. I've tried rebooting both laptop and server several
times. I've checked that incoming connections aren't blocked in the
Security tab of Server Settings, (in any event, my network IP range is
"allowed"). My network is also the "trusted" range of my firewall, and
doesn't show up as being blocked in any of the logs in any event. I've
tried with the firewall switched off and uninstalled as well - still no
joy.

I haven't made any changes or installed any programs on either
machine.

The problem is the same on Windows Explorer and Firefox and changing
the security settings on the brower tools doesn't make any difference.

I've tried reinstalling and updating the browsers. I don't have a
third machine to connect to see if I can narrow the problem down to the
laptop or the music server.

Have searched other threads and I'm probably at the limits of my
troubleshooting knowledge and would be grateful for other thoughts ?

To narrow things down, can you see the server if you plug the laptop
into the router with an ethernet cable (rather than using wireless)?

I can't access the web ui by the laptop via a wired or wireless

I can see all the networked shares on the PC server via wired or

What's puzzling is that it has suddenly stopped working - which
suggests some kind of setting has changed. All I've done today is
ripped a cd on the PC server and been working on documents on the

[slim] Menu navigation issue

2006-03-13 Thread j . e . f . f

Hi folks

I think I have found a small issue with the menu navigation. I have
programmed my Harmony 659 remote control to use the Pronto IR codes
found here:
http://www.slimdevices.com/downloads/pronto/SqueezeboxCodes.xls

Everything works great (in fact in same cases, better than the original
remote) except for one niggly thing. I have assigned the IR code for
"menu_home" to the MENU button on my remote control. Sometimes (I
haven't found the exact pattern yet) when I press the MENU button from
the Now Playing screen, I am taken to the last item I had highlighted
in the top-level menu (for example, Browse Music). If I immediately
press RIGHT to bring up the item's sub-menu, the SB won't let me.
Instead it gives me the bouncy animation that indicates that I cannot
go any further. To access the sub-menu, I first need to arrow down to
another menu option, then back up to the item I had previously
selected, and then I am able to arrow right into its sub menu.

I'm using this code for menu_home:

Code:

   006b 0012 0029 002f 0014 003d 0014 003d 0014 003d 0014 003d 0014
0014 0014 003d 0014 003d 0014 003d 0014 003d 0014 0014 0014 0014 0014 0014 0014
0014 0014 0014 0014 003d 0014 003d 0014 0393

Has anyone else seen this behaviour?

Thanks!

Yes to both. The server will resolve all of localhost, 127.0.0.1 and

I still have iTunes version 5 and Jhymn on my iBook. Is there any way

transfer the unlocked songs back to her computer?

Thanks,

[slim] Slim Browser refreshing too frequently

2006-03-13 Thread chris . mason

Hi all,
I don't know if that has been happening for a while, and I've just
noticed this, or its recent (I think its recent):

Using pretty much any of the supplied web browser interfaces for
slimserver, the web page gets refreshed far too fast - about every 8
seconds, which is quite annoying.

I have browser refresh to 60 seconds. I tried the default (30 seconds)
and various other numbers to no avail.

Any ideas?

Chris.

One last stupid question... you are browsing to:

[slim] Re: Can't use SB at full volume?

2006-03-13 Thread verbatone

This probably has more to do with the clip detection than much else. I
have an old sony pre-amp (home theater) switcher which I run the
digital optical out to and don't see any clip indicator while playing
normal music at either vol. 40 or fixed out level (should be the same
thing). Certain devices detect clipping differently. A Yamaha EQ that
I've used before would show clipping whenever a singular 0dBFS (full
scale) value sample occured. So it would show clipping on the test
tone from the SB. Programs like Sound Forge will only show clipping
when two or more consecutive 0dBFS samples occur. Minor clipping isn't
that big of a deal (my opinion), lots of mastered music has pushed into
digital clipping, but it is really only audible after pushing it a bit
too hard. The problem might also be your source material having been
mastered too hot. Someone suggested playing the same file back on a CD
player digitally, this is a good comparison point.

My suggestion would be to make the EQ flat on the Behringer and then
see if clipping with the test tone still exists on the output. If it
does, lower the output level by 1 or 2dB, if it still exists, you have
gain that's not accounted for.

No, once the songs are touched by itunes 6x they have to be on itunes
6x. Just wait a while and the hymn guys will break the itunes 6x
encryption. Just tell your friend not to upgrade itunes anymore until
you can run hymn on the collection.

SlimServer itself can probably read these files (it could for me).  If you set the music folder in SlimServer to your music folder then they will probably appear.  However, they won't be MM "mixable" because SlimServer didn't receive them from MM.  Some people have had issues with duplicate song entries with this configuration (both MM and music folder enabled) but I don't have this problem at all.
I'm sure this doesn't help at all -- sorry! :-)Ben

The nightly builds are found from a link on the downloads page, near

Builds are done nightly at around 1am Pacific time, and include a
"stable" build based on 6.2.1 with bug fixes only, and an "unstable"

- major rework of skins, using css and template toolkit more.
- complete rework of the CLI, using a request/dispatch model and
broader access to slimserver control and status

- nokia770 skin
- server/player settings ui changes (pulldown menu instead of tabs,
for one. more to come)
- "now playing" menu options are more flexible. you can choose how
many and what order

- optional fade-in for alarm clock
- Musicmagic mood control, reject/genre match parameter control (6.2
uses only a fixed param for rejects and genre match), and using
playlists as mix seeds.
- bitrate limited players get send a fixed lower bitrate silence
stream until playback starts

- some animation/IR optimisations (some have worked down into 6.2.2 as well)

There are more, but I can't remember them all. The first three, so
far, are the largest of the changes. Some smaller feature adds have
eventually worked into 6.2 after spending time in 6.5

This should be 6.2.2 (the nightly). Only bug fixes make it in there.
New stuff goes into 6.5.

Now in the interrest of debugging your issue, you may go back to 6.2.1
and check if by any chance the same issue pops up again. This could
indicate a change external to the server, like a corrupted file (which
other players could well accept and not SlimServer for some reason).

For some reason, the file now plays without a single problem over the
SQB3 via Slimserver. The only change... I deleted Softsqueeze from my
computer. Don't ask me why - Softsqueeze seems to be allergic to files
that Slimserver lays through the SQB without an issue. Now everything

[slim] Diagnostics/Debugging in slimserver

2006-03-13 Thread mwoodroof

Am now back to my Belkin router and the same problems described in this
thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=21866.

Basically, after about 200Mb streaming (half hour of FLACs a few hours
of MP3s) the SB3 stops, seems to lose the network conection. I think it
is a router problem (I have the same problem copying large files over
the wireless network, using Windows XP) but cannot for the life of me
work out what.

In order to try to understand what is happening when the SB3 stops
playing, is there any value in looking at the debugging in slimserver?
If so, can anyone describe to me what I should be looking at/for? I
know you can turn on various options in "server settings/debugging" in
slimserver but don't know what to look for - it is a very long and
confusing list!

Any advice much appreciated!

As for the confusion about Slimserver, let me try again.

If I go through the Squeezebox3 setup process, I choose my wireless
network and connect using WPA-PSK with TKIP. It then connects to the
wireless network and I choose to connect using DHCP (sorry, there was a
typo in my original post.) Then I have the option to connect to my local
machine (shows machine name and IP address), SqueezeNet or a manual IP
address. I select my local machine, it pauses, then goes through
connecting to my router bit again, then gives me an error that in

If no password is used, or if I use WEP, everything works fine.

I take it you still can't connect to SqueezeNetwork either?

What IP address does the Squeezebox receive via DHCP? If it's a DHCP
issue, the SB will breifly show that it's received an IP address of
168.254.xxx.xxx, which actually means it failed to get an IP address
from a DHCP server. If that happens, try manually setting an IP
address that's on your LAN's subnet.

I think that the reason the SB shows you the SlimServer on your network
as an option is that it remembers it from when you had connected with
WEP or no password. It probably doesn't actually see it.

or active at the time it's displayed) the issue may be someplace else,
but I can eliminate most.

Remember, I can connect using no password or WEP, just not with WPA. So
my IP info must be fine, SlimServer is running, etc. It seems to me that
there is simply an issue with WPA and maybe it is a time-out issue
(which I also never considered.) I suppose that I can return this
router, but there's no guarantee that company X's WPA router
configuration is no more compatible to SqueezeBox than D-Links.

I'm going to give D-Link a call tomorrow to see if they have any ideas,
but for now I guess I need to choose between a secure network or a
musically friendly one!

[slim] Slimserver Preference Pane on Mac Mini Intel Duo

2006-03-13 Thread netim3

hi

Just installed 6.2.1 ona Mac Mini Intel Duo, and got an error message
that the Preferenc pane could not be opened. Is this related to the new
Mac architecture or to some other missing software component? Do later
versions (6.2 or 6.5) address this problem?

Re: [slim] Re: "Album Artist" versus "Artist" behavior

2006-03-13 Thread Philip Meyer
>My frustration comes from having asked many times how it is supposed to
>work and not getting any answers.
>
Me too!

Things still unclear to me are:

1. What do I enter as the tag Name/Value for "Compilation"? I use mp3Tag,
which allows me to add custom tag entries, so I'm guessing I need "COMPILATION"
as the tag name, but what goes in the value?

2. If I have an album that isn't a Various Artists album (such as an album that
has one song by a guest artist), how can I tell SlimServer to regard the album
as not a compilation? Perhaps COMPILATION=NO/0/False for each track? Setting
AlbumArtist for each track doesn't seem to work.

3. What is the best way of handling the case when there are two albums with the
same title.

Eg. I have three albums called "Remixed", each of which is a various artist
album in its own right, but SlimServer shows the union of all tracks on these
albums as a single album. I think a solution for (2) above might fix this also
for me, as ideally I'd like to set AlbumArtist for the albums (eg. one album is
Sarah McLachlan "Remixed", which features artists covering Sarah McLachlan
tracks, so having AlbumArtist="Sarah McLachlan" to make the album appear listed
under Sarah McLaclan would be a nice solution for me).

I know there is the "Common Album Titles" preference, but I actually have quite
a few duplicate album titles, and it doesn't seem a nice solution to the
problem (it should be derivable from tags, otherwise things like Random Album
mix may not work correctly either?).

For now, I have made the album names unique, but putting the artist name after
the album name, such as "Remixed [Sarah McLachlan]". Occasionally, I scan
through my various artists list checking for albums that shouldn't be there,
and "fixing" them in this way - it's hard to get it right first time, as I
don't want the artist name in every album name, only when there is a clash.

I think SlimServer may be able to work out clashes based on duplicate
[disc+]track numbers for the same album title at scan time (enhancement
request).

4. What differences, if any, are necessary to get these problems working for
different tag formats, eg. mp3, FLAC, WMA, etc. mp3Tag supports all of these
different formats in a single user interface; but perhaps "COMPILATION" should
be called something else when used in ogg vorbis tags, etc.

5. What can be done to achieve the same effects for albums defined by cue
sheets. This seems totally broken for me (or perhaps it was never
implemented). I would expect to be able to define any tag name=value pair in
the cue sheet data, but Slimserver only seems to read specific things it is
looking for, such as TITLE and PERFORMER. eg. ARTISTSORT doesn't seem to work.

Not directly related to compilation album support, but worth mentioning anyway:

6. I believe mp3 tags define a tag called ORIGARTIST, which I have entered for
a bunch of compilation albums featuring cover versions of tracks. It would be
nice if SlimServer could detect these and list them like it does with
Band/Composer/Conductor tags.

This was the same problem that I experienced when I tried to write the original

The best thing to do is to write the wiki page in another text editor and then
paste it into the web page textarea control.

Could cue sheet tags be added to the table (or somewhere else in the wiki)?

Also, does SlimServer support multiple Comment tags? I know several tagging
clients that allow for multiple comments.

0 and 1

0 = False, not a compilation
1 = True, a compilation

Setting COMPILATION=0 should explicitly turn tell SlimServer that an
album is not a compilation.

Try also turning off the server preference for automatically detecting
compilations. Doing this in combination with using explicit COMPILATION
tags may be what you need to keep from having to use the silly "common
album titles" thing.

In mp3tag I loaded up my whole library of 8000+ tracks and set
COMPILATION=0 on every track. Then I loaded up all of my compilation
albums (a relatively small number) and set COMPILATION=1 on those. I
also set all of the ALBUMARTIST tags to "Various Artists" on the
compilations. They end up getting grouped under "Various Artists", but
without looking in the SlimServer database I couldn't honestly tell you
if it's because they're marked as compilations or not.

I said the SlimServer address will be remembered. From what I've seen,
I don't believe the SB caches its own IP address (although that might be
the smart thing to do; in either case a good clear indication when it
failed to get a DHCP address would be nice).

Yes, that tells you that SlimServer and the machine on which it is
running are probably configured correctly. No firewalls or similar
issues.

I'd be surprised if D-Link will be able to help. About your only
recourse there might be to try older versions of the firmware for the
device.

There are still some definite issues with the Squeezebox 3 firmware and
many wireless access points, so you just may have to live with WEP until
(if) Slim Devices gets those resolved. Or try a different wireless
router.

[slim] Internet Radio Key 103 UK - can't listen past station ident

2006-03-13 Thread mattmanchester

I know I'm probably doing something wrong, but with the EMAP radio
station Key 103, on the following URL:

mms://EMAP1.planetwideradio.com/key103

I can only get the station/sponsor message - not the live stuff after
it. It works fine through media player on the PC, but not through
squeezebox or slimserver.

Im using firmware 28, and the public release of slimserver.

Any pointers?

Try a Linksys WRT54GL. Works fine in every mode but WPA2+AES. Works

firmware and DD-WRT 3rd party firmware.

The WRT54G (no L) will work as well, but you need the latest firmware.
The first firmware for this new "version 5" router is very bug-ridden
for even basic networking.

I had a problem with the connection dropping out after around 35 minutes

Downgrading to 6.2.1 and FW28 solved the problem for me. I thought it
might be a dodgy installation but the symptoms are consistently
repeatable.

If one of you feels like cueing them up and seeing if you can get the

[slim] Re: Playing songs purchased from iTunes Store

2006-03-13 Thread NWP

There is good information about ITunes and their encryption here:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/FairPlay

This came into play for me just the other day. I had been hyping
Squeezebox and Slimserver to my brother and he was ready to take the
plunge and give it a try. Then he mentioned, "Oh yeah, this will play
all the songs I've been buying on ITunes, right?" Grr [EMAIL PROTECTED]@$

Microsoft takes a ton of crap for their monopolistic practices ( M$ lol
etc), but I don't think they've ever really pissed me off as much as
this ITunes encryption does. I encourage everyone to spread the word
whenever they hear someone using ITunes to buy music. You not only buy
music, you are buying into the necessity to buy your hardware from Apple
whenever you want to play that music.

Getting back to the original poster's question: Another option you
have is to burn the music to CD then rip it back from the CDs in
another form like MP3. Whether or not this is a potential solution
really depends on the amount of songs they have bought.
