It'll be OK. The firmware is already sitting on your SlimServer, as
part of the 6.5.0 installation. The Squeezebox just needs to connect
to the server for the upgrade.

Let us know if it works. If the Squeezebox is on your network - that
is, it has a good wireless connection, and it has an IP address on the
same subnet as the server, then it shouldn't really make any difference
if it's connected wirelessly or via wire. Still, worth a shot.

[slim] Re: Always fails to connect after shutting down server computer

2006-10-01 Thread Bruce S .

Nope. Note above that I do not have the luxury of 4 ports. But it
appears that I may have two not just the one. One for the cable modem
(phone line) going in and one going from the router to the machine on
which my slim server is running.

So, now the problem is that to do this I have to cut the umbilical cord
to the internet. This may not be a problem since I plan to simply rerun
the installation of the slimserver version 6.5.x or whatever it is,
that I just installed yesterday, after cabling up the SB3 to the router
(which will cut said umbilical cord) and watch the prompt come up that
says that I should "download" the firmware to the SB3. Now, if at that
point in the installation the software has to go back to the internet
to get the SB3 firmware, I will be hosed, cause I won't be able to.

I'm not entirely clear on what's being said above by michaelwagner re:
playlists (mostly, if there's a way in there to fix the problem), but
the dupe albums problem I'm having, specifically, is definitely somehow
related to playlists:

all of the albums with dupes are albums that contain songs in one of my

the album) are the songs contained in a playlist.

is there a way to make this stop?

[slim] Re: Sonos-like remote?

2006-10-01 Thread Balthazar_B

Let's put it this way: if Apple had released the iPod with a web
interface for navigation instead of the simple but brilliant wheel
mechanism, it would have flopped in the marketplace (I suppose one
could say the Newton was the original flop). SanDisk, Creative, et al.
have pretty decent navigation mechanisms as well. A small device (as a
remote should be) whose essential function is navigation really needs
something like this, and IMHO that's one of the strongest points about
the Sonos (despite that the remote could still stand improvement).
Messing with a web interface compared with a device where hardware and
firmware are well-matched will almost always be a poorer user
experience.

Had a similar problem. Turns out that some files in a given album had
the disc number tag, and others didn't. I removed all the disc number
data (since I do not use it to organize my albums) using JRiver Media
Center. This helped quite a bit. I still had a few albums left that
showed (disc 2). Turns out some of my files had a "/2" left over in the
Album field that J River did not show me or remove for me--I guess the
album field was "1/2" and "2/2" initially. I removed the remaining
"/2"'s in Tag and Rename and now no more duplicate albums.

The only connections you need are the SB, and the machine that houses
the SlimServer.

I assume your router has at least 4 ports. To do your SB firmare
update, simply make sure that your SlimServer machine is on one port,
and your SB is on another.

This only needs to be a temporary setup while you flash your firmware.

OK I am not worthy.

I have tried getting 6.5 to work properly, tried everything including
running scanner.exe from command line and from slimserver, use with or
without musicmagic, and I just cannot get it to work properly.
Problems include scanner quits with partial library, duplicates,
library showing 0 artists and 0 albums and 10,000 songs, and sanning
for hours on enf without showing up a song.

I am not new in this and has worked aroung the various idiosynchrocies
of slimserver. But this new scanner.exe addition means the chance of
getting it to work for newbies without various tweaking is pretty
slim.

I tried bugzilla and forum and cant seem to find a lot of reference to
problems and workarounds.

Is there a 6.5 specific FAQ or forum somewhere?

I have a larger library and do not have the time to experiment and
spend hours trial and error.

[slim] Re: Always fails to connect after shutting down server computer

2006-10-01 Thread Millwood

1. You can update fireware via wireless if you are connected.

2. If the SB3 doesn't connect, you want to kick it, not the server.
Hold down the left arrow to get to the setup screen. You should see a
choice of connecting to your server.

3. Signal strength does not always mean connected, and earlier
firmware often got into a limbo state in which it showed signal but was
not really on the network.

4. Pinging your SB3 (you need to know its ip address) from the machine
on which the server is running is a good way to see if its even on the
network.

There is no need to clean up, expired items are deleted automatically
because we have set auto_purge_interval to 1 hour. Yes, a single cache

I managed to fix that part. I moved the squeezebox (had to get
extensions for my speakers and power outlets) about 5 feet closer to
the router and now the signal is strong enough. Kinda weird though that
I had been running without a single hitch for two months from that spot
and the day I switch to 6.5, it stops working... interference, kbps
requirements raised... who knows.

At least it works now... I'm not one to complain much once it works, so
even though there are still some minor bugs on my side, I can play
(most) of my music. (Haven't figured why some mp3 won't load.)

To get the latest firmare onto your SB, you'll need to connect via the

After that (assuming the firmware upgrade helps your wireless issue),

It's a great thing, IMHO.  I was one of the people who requested that APEv2 be supported with priority over ID3v2. It's too bad so much software out there writes APEv2 and doesn't tell the user, or doesn't display them by default so the user doesn't realize they are in place.
I hate ID3v2, it's a very restrictive format.  APEv2 tags are much more flexible; the only problem with them is that a lot of software ignores them.I wouldn't blame SlimDevices if they switched back to the previous behavior on this particular issue because there are a minority of us who care about it.  If I want a flexible tagging format that works I can always head over to FLAC for a well-supported solution.  APEv2 on MP3 is nice for me but apparently others are flumoxed by it.

Sorry I didn't see this thread before, I was travelling last week.

Glad this sorted out your problem.

Regarding APE tags, that is weird. In my case, MP3Gain uses APE tags
in my MP3s. Works just fine. I don't believe there's any data in my
APE tags other than what MP3Gain put there.

Mp3tag does support WMA, so you just have to find something that's
different by sorting a column. As before, select the first,
shift+select the last, then perform a delete/rewrite operation on the
list. Your HDD will churn away but it won't require much work on your
part.

[slim] Issues with 6.5.0

2006-10-01 Thread Mike White

It took me a couple of tries to get 6.5 installed. Getting frustrated
and going back to 6.3.1, and being unable to get SoftSqueeze 2.8 to
work at all. Went back to 6.3.1 because slimserver would just stop
every so often - no rhyme or reason to it, just stop. A nightly didn't
help things at all, just made it worse.

Returning to 6.5.0 finally after uninstalling everything that
slimserver had installed, and even deleting the directories.

I updated to the latest firmware (64 I believe), and tried to play all
my music by going to browse albums, right click, all songs and hitting
play.

Within moments SqueezeBox was displaying a report that it couldn't find
a file in genre "Celtic" - which is the way that I have set up some of
my music. It then started to try to buffer something like "California
Sponsored ..." (Don't actually remember the entire title, but it sure
isn't anything I ripped), it got to 87% and stuck there.

I went back and made sure I selected shuffle before I tried to play all
songs again. This worked.

I suspect that the new database is not working quite correctly, and a
few of the stopping issues I am seeing are related to the database not
referring to the proper path.

To the best of my memory, slimserver 6.3.1 reported 612 albums, and
slimserver 6.5.0 reports 614 albums. I have not added any albums of any
kind.

I am running on Windows XP home edition, with 1 gig of ram, and about
500 gigs of hard disk space, which is not full by any stretch of the
imagination.

I followed this, but also set APEv2 tags to be removed. I had over
1000 tracks that had either ID3v1 and/or APE tags set, so this took a
while; but (after a clean and rescan in SS) the results look
promising!

Now I just need to do something about all those WMA tags... :-)

Still, as MeSue says, I'm not sure why SS has flipped to putting APE
over ID3v2.

(albums) that were in playlists on the 'original' drive are now
duplicating in the slimserver database. I tried setting the playlist
directory to the same as the music directory (on the second drive), and
wiping and rescanning, but same behaviour.
Not sure what do now...

[slim] Re: Same album with several entries in the database

2006-10-01 Thread Michaelwagner

What I did was, for testing purposes, *copied* my music directory to a
new location, but left the playlist directory pointing to the old (and
still good) directory.

So in reality there were two copies of the music. So in some odd way,
Slim was correct in indexing everything twice. But I didn't get that at
first, because I had changed the music directory setting (and forgotten
about the other one).

It turns out that the playlist directory acts, at least in some
situations, just like another music directory.

If you *moved* your music directory (instead of copying like I did),
then it's not the same.

[slim] Standalone scanner options

2006-10-01 Thread JJZolx

I was just looking at the scanner options displayed by scanner.pl and
had a couple questions:

Is the path/URL required, or will the scanner use the music folder path
from the prefs file when it's not explicitly given on the command line?
If it _is_ passed on the command line, then where does the scanner get
its playlist folder from?

Is --cleanup (Run a database cleanup job at the end of the scan)
recommended, and is it normally done when a scan is run from within
SlimServer?

How does the scanner locate the default prefs file if it isn't
explicitly given by the --prefsfile option?

Thanks.

Yes. You'll be prompted with a message on the Squeezebox's screen to
hold down the Brightness key to begin the firmware upgrade. But like
you say, it needs to connect to the server first.

So at this point it sounds like you're unable to get the Squeezebox
connected at all?

I think you might want to verify whether the Squeezebox is successfully
connecting to your wireless router. This shouldn't be the problem if
you're seeing connection problems only after restarting the server (are
you shutting down either the Squeezebox or wireless router also?) but
it's still a good idea to make sure you know whether the Squeezebox is
on the network.

Step through the wireless setup (no need to make any changes) and see
what the messages on screen look like. Older versions of the firmware
were notorious for not working well with wireless routers. If it _is_
a wireless issue, I'd connect the Squeezebox using the wired Ethernet
so that you can get the newest firmware from the server.

[slim] Library scanning aborts early in 6.5

2006-10-01 Thread opusman

Hi all, after the recent upgrade to 6.5 my library which once contained
over 7000 albums now shows as having 75. I have tried numerous "clear &
rescan all" operations and never get more than 75.

I set the sql/mysql/scan/import debug flags as suggest in another
thread. When the scan starts I get a number of "Can't call method
"print" on an undefined value at..." errors which I can post here if
required, although I don't think these are significant as they only
occur at the very beginning and the scan does then get going.

However after a few minutes it seems to abort, leaving me with only the
aforementioned 75 albums in the library. The log shows only the
following:

SELECT me.name, me.value FROM metainformation me WHERE ( name = ? ):
'isScanning'
SELECT me.name, me.value FROM metainformation me WHERE ( name = ? ):
'isScanning'
SELECT me.name, me.value FROM metainformation me WHERE ( name = ? ):

Thanks for pointing that out. I don't have access to a slimp3 but if
its very different I guess that means an extra column for some
volunteer to fill! Looking at the Transporter emulation in
Softsqueeze, it appears not so much that its different from an SB,
rather that there are a few extra options which I think is easier to
handle (I have an example in my prototype table).

Now this I like... if I understand correctly, you'd have a permanently
available search field that you could type in a keyword and have it
find the relevant sections ... it has the big advantage (in addition to
translation) of being much more immediately accessible than the wiki.

Is this something do-able or just a glint in your eye? :)

"AIFF is a common uncompressed audio file format, and is compatible
with Apple Macintosh computers. Note that AIFF files can contain ID3
Tags, so the AIFF format is ideal for importing uncompressed audio into
software that understands ID3 tags, such as iTunes"

This qoute taken from Riptastic!™ AIFF Encoder - methinks AIFF uses
consumer 'ID3 ' chunk tagging to store tag info, not the pro chunks
used by other Apple software.

Incidentally, when I look at AIFF files in Slimserver I look at them by
browsing the music folder which is not the same drive iTunes music is
stored on and the file in question is not indexed in the iTunes library
at all (it was copied to the other drive so cannot be referencing the
iTunes database). A similar WAV file given the same treatment does not
display this info at all.

Info is:

Title: Crawling up a Hill

Genre: Jazz
Track: 2
File Format: AIFF
Duration: 3:25
Volume Adjustment: -9.67 dB

[slim] Re: Command location index needed?

2006-10-01 Thread Fred

First comment is that you need to know the player: settings do change by
player type (slimp3, sb, transporter).

It is scheduled for an update, but even in 6.5 the setting mechanism is
entirely dynamic. The code builds up some data structure in memory which
is then used to display the HTML.

As a first idea then, the table you want is *almost* in the code today.
Maybe a way to create the table is to have some clever routine dump the
in memory data structure... This has the advantage of easy regeneration
if something gets changed! Making the table is easy, keeping it up to
date is the hard part!

Another idea might be something similar to the OS X spotlight
mechanism... It does index the terms in the preferences (so if you
search, say, brightness, it finds "Display preferences")... What I am
saying is we could have the server itself propose a search option for
the setting texts. We'd get translation as a benefit. Practically,
maybe we need to add an invisible "tag" or "keyword" to the data for
searching.
That would be self-updating and on-location (but could not cover player
initial setup).

[slim] Re: No library after upgrade to 6.5

2006-10-01 Thread kbang

Thanks for the help on getting debug out kdf. I am running the
Slimserver on Ubuntu 6.06 and here the paths are a little different:

Stop Slimserver:
sudo /etc/init.d/slimserver stop

Start Slimserver:
sudo /etc/init.d/slimserver start --d_sql --d_mysql --d_scan
--d_import

And fetch log with command:
tail -f /var/log/slimserver/slimserver.log

My problem was the permissions on folders and flac files. Read, write
and execution access was only granted for the user. I ran
chmod +rwx * -R
on my music catalog, and after that the music files again appears in
Slimserver :-D At the same time i discovered a bunch of cue sheet
errors (not fatal) which im going to look at next.

Regards
Kristian, Denmark

[slim] Re: iTunes WAV -> AIFF adds volume adjustment field info

2006-10-01 Thread Mark Lanctot

Note you -still- don't have tags because AIFF doesn't support tags.
SlimServer is reading the "tag" information from the iTunes database.

If your iTunes database gets corrupted you will lose all this info.

I'm not sure how volume adjustment got in there, but you can disable
SlimServer doing anything with it in Player Settings - Audio - Volume
Adjustment/ReplayGain (last item).

[slim] Re: iTunes playlists empty after 6.5 upgrade

2006-10-01 Thread radish

If the podcasts aren't in the XML file then I don't think slimserver
will see them, as it only looks at the contents of the XML file. How
about having slimserver scan the podcast directory itself? That way at
least they'd show up, although they'd be mixed in with your music which
isn't so great. Or, add the podcast URLs to slimserver's own podcast
plugin and let it handle things - that's what I do.

[slim] iTunes WAV -> AIFF adds volume adjustment field info

2006-10-01 Thread Timbo

Hi folks,

After reading here how AIFF files store tags in them and how WAV files
don't (so if my iTunes database got screwed I would be in a pickle for
example as regards 'year' and 'genre' tags that at present sit nicely
in my iTunes library!) I decided to use iTunes to convert a few WAV to
AIFF to check sound quality (don't ask I know they are identical) and
low and behold I do get tags when I look at the AIFF file on my music
folder directly with Slim Server. But I also have a 'volume adjustment'
field and it has a value in it - now I wonder why this is? I haven't
asked iTunes to adjust volume and neither have I asked Slimserver
either? And what on earth is it comparing itself to to decide on the
volume adjustment?

Anyone have any clues?

:-)

Yes, this line is the key:

Error: Decoder does not support file format, skipping track

Our Ogg decoder in the firmware is not capable of playing this stream,
probably due to the memory usage required to decode it.

I think you are right, the SB3 is networking working OK. It should see

Try connecting the server laptop directly to a router port, thus
eliminating one wireless link.

Various posts on this forum have quoted issues with double wireless

ugly ugly ugly...

is basically my problem, rudimentary bad ui design afflicts them
all...

the sonos isn't perfect (especilly to do with responsiveness) but its
streets ahead of what seems to be available for slimserver.

also as much as some people love tinkering with different uis maybe
making their own, some of us just want a system that works...and i
think that those people will end up taking their money to sonos...

a good ui and remote will stop that imho..

[slim] Re: Cannot connect to slimserver

2006-10-01 Thread nabwong

Is the slimserver laptop hard wired to the router, or is it wireless
linked?

### wireless

Did you say you could ping the SB3 from the laptop?

### I could ping the sb3 (sent 4 received 4 loss 0)

You should get IP address, gateway ,wireless id, etc without a server
present.

### got ip (dhcp), connected to wireless, can connect to squeezenetwork
via MY wifi network

Wireless is usually the most problematic of all. It may be worth doing
a reset of the SB3 and reconfiguring the wireless connection from
scratch, if all else fails.

### I've done multiple resets with xilinx programming, and
re-re-re-configured my connection. It always connects to my wifi.

I feel as though the problem is with my Laptop. I strongly feel it's
some setting. But i've disabled the firewall and have included the 3
exceptions need 4843, 9000. I can totally control the sb when my laptop
and sb3 are wired to the router. But i can't find any other firewall i
can disable. I've spywareblaster, ad-aware, spybot, can't find
firewall. Un-installed norton already.

Appreciate you guys taking the time to talk this through with me.

2006-10-01 Thread Ramage

If you are connecting to Squeezenetwork over wireless then the problem
has to be with the LAN connection.

Is the slimserver laptop hard wired to the router, or is it wireless
linked?

Did you say you could ping the SB3 from the laptop?

The SB3 should do the following from power on (plug in)

#Welcome message
#Obtain IP
#attempt to connect to slimserver if failed screen goes blank
#Press left arrow then up/down arrow to "current settings"
# use arrows to see your current networking settings.

You should get IP address, gateway ,wireless id, etc without a server
present.

Your findings will be good indication of what the SB3 is seeing.

Wireless is usually the most problematic of all. It may be worth doing
a reset of the SB3 and reconfiguring the wireless connection from
scratch, if all else fails.

Is there something lacking about Moose, SlimRemote, SqueezeBoxPlayer Widget, &c, &c? Do the complaining people just not know about these, or do they try them and find them lacking? Maybe they're not acceptable because they're not SDI-provided? I haven't used any of them as the existing remote is excellent, but I've been reading this mailing list for years, and it's like the right hand needs an introduction to the left hand.
This is separate from the remote question, as the difference between a lame PDA/Internet tablet solution and a dedicated remote with super functionality is clear. It's not clear that the people asking for the super duper remote realize how expensive it will be if/when it happens, though... we're talking $300 worth of hardware minimum IMHO, plus software production costs. Even if SDI decides to open source the resulting firmware, they'd still be on the hook for producing the first release, and that'll cost a lot of Transporters.

So assuming we're only concerned with what's in the FileCache directory,
I've attached a quick script that lists all the keys in the cache along
with their size. The parent Cache directory also contains other things
like compiled HTML templates and the MySQL data files.

If you're interested in how FileCache works, here is the documentation:

http://search.cpan.org/~dclinton/Cache-Cache-1.05/lib/Cache/Cache.pm

To run this script:

Install ActivePerl if on Windows.
Place cachedump.pl in your SlimServer's 'server' directory.
Run at a command prompt: perl -Ilib -ICPAN cachedump.pl C:/Program
Files/SlimServer/server/Cache

After it's done, open up the cachedump.txt file.

Replace the last item with your cache directory if it's different.

router admin setup. Laptop A is clearly labelled najibwong which is me
and Laptop B is clearly labelled maisy, my gf. And i am trying to
connect to Laptop A.

Thanks for the input!

seen the pics, but not seen it in action...

to be honest i hate the web interface currently.

it's just not as repsonsive or friendly as it should be.

not sure if the 770 is the same...

i just see no reason why there aren't more decent clients out there..

Go to Help - Server & Network health. Run the Net Test tests, you
should be able to get 1500 kbps at 100% or 2000 kbps at 100% for FLAC
playback.

Enable performance monitoring and submit the output.

It might be something else, my embedded images work OK.

Make sure these are specifically designed for 6.5. Plugins made for
6.3 won't work.

The setting only persists as long as SlimServer runs. If it gets
restarted, the flag is cleared.

You can run debugging from the command line but I don't have details.

[slim] Re: Sonos-like remote?

2006-10-01 Thread Mark Lanctot

Slim Devices certainly has the advantage when it comes to flexibility.

But yes, the remote issue comes up again and again. And by all
accounts the Sonos gear is quite reliable. It's a nice idea, a mesh
network, but it means that you have to have a ZP hardwired into your
router. If it's close enough to be hardwired into my router, it's
close enough to my PC that I can just use my PC speakers, so it's
redundant in my case.

Regarding the remote, have you checked out the Nokia 770?

Yes, it is working now. I opened port 8000 on the server and also the
stream address I used to use was
http://192.168.0.2.:8000/
and now it has to be
http://192.168.0.2:8000/listen.m3u

So glad it is working again. Thanks for the help.

[slim] Re: 6.5 Unstable and Bugs

2006-10-01 Thread lordhong

I just upgraded to 6.5. I've had my share of problems with it.

- Wireless playback is stuttering a lot. I'm using a Linksys WRT54G
with a D-Link 7dbi antenna (my player is real far from my computer).
Never had a problem with 6.2 and 6.3, but now 90% of what I play is
stuttering. I haven't been able to pinpoint what makes the remaining
10% playable (or the conditions). It might be a scrolling / brightness
setting, as scrolling text was making it stutter in 6.3 too, but up to
now I haven't been able to fix it. I noticed though that the 10% i
manage to get to play are mp3s. All flacs are unplayable, they all
stutter. Problem is, around 70% of my library are flacs.

- Some albums won't load. I *think* they might be mp3s with the cover
imaged embedded in the id3 tag (I've had a similar problem with
mediamonkey player), but my library is 40,000 songs, so it's fairly
long to double check if that's really the problem, but the ones I found
had the image in the id3. Removing the image did not fix the problem
though.

- I can't get any extra plug-ins to work. None will load. (ladt.fm
radio, scrobbler, etc.)

- I tried to use the debugging mode. It just won't stay checked, so I
can't report anything from that.

Just reporting my issues. I tried the beta 6.5.1 but it just won't load
at all; it stays stuck at starting server for 30+ minutes (I killed the
process and uninstalled then).

I know about the ZP-80, but they didn't have that out when I was

Ceejay:

That's a great idea!

I'm wondering if something like this could be extended to the player
UI. It might be more complicated, but there are frequent questions
regarding "how do I re-enter DNS" and such that force me to get up off
my butt, go to my SB2 and fiddle with it, hopefully not inadvertently
changing something!

It'd be nice to have this all documented and perhaps numbered so that
you could point a user to the wiki, "step 9".

This would be dependent on firmware version, just as the web commands
is dependent on SlimServer version.

I like your idea of the command index and I'll take a look at it.

[slim] Re: Stopped : Your player was not found.

2006-10-01 Thread Mark Lanctot

You don't need to open ports on your router for SlimServer. Opening
ports is for -external- access, i.e. from the Internet.

If you can access SqueezeNetwork you have proper communication with
your wireless router - a proper encryption passphrase, proper DNS and
gateway.

If you can't access SlimServer it's probably a firewall issue. Check
to see that the firewall on your SlimServer PC isn't blocking
SlimServer. SlimServer needs ports TCP 3483, UDP 3483 and TCP 9000.

Once you make sure of this, press left on your Squeezebox remote for 5
seconds, go back to networking setup, skip over your encryption
passphrase, IP address setting, etc. by pressing FWD. Stop when you
hit "Connecting to wireless network". Once you're connected it should
ask you to specify a music source. You should see the name or IP
address of your SlimServer PC. Select it.

Edit: oh yeah - what radish said!

I've been delting the whole cache folder and all subdirectories whilst
trying out the 6.5 betas to ensure that SlimServer truly does do a
clear and rescan of the database. All that happens is that SlimServer
recreates it as it starts up and then does the scan (which can take a
while depending upon library size and computer power). So, yes, you can
delete it (stop SlimServer service first though).

Just to drop in on the question of the 4096 directories arranged in a
tree, that sounds like a hashmap to me. If you drill down until you
find an actual file, you'll see the first 3 characters of it's name
correspond to the directory path to find it. I'm guessing the filenames
are hashes either of the content of the file or some other data (like
the audio file it corresponds to) and the directory structure allows
them to be found very quickly. To pre-empt the "why not put them all in
one directory" question - because a lot of filesystems get unhappy with
20,000 files in one place!

I don't use a compilation flag. Instead I use the albumartist field for
compilations. I either put "Various Artists" or the name of the album in
the albumartist field and it keeps the compilation grouped. The artists
list shows the albumartists but not the individual song artists,
though, so it might not be ideal for everyone.

That (and the price) is one of the things that turned me off about
Sonos. I can find/buy/upgrade my own amp. With Sonos' amp, you're
stuck with it. It might be good but if it wasn't, you're still stuck
with it.

Might be OK for a second zone but in my main zone I'll use my own amp.

That sounds like the router is somehow blocking LAN access from the
