RE: [slim] Re: 6.5 post upgrade query

2006-10-04 Thread Richard Scales
Thank you for this - I have tried MP3Tag but have thus far failed to view
TSOA.

One thing that confuses me though is that all the CD's concerned were ripped
by me using the same application (Music Magic Jukebox back then) and as far
as I can remember - nothing different was specified when ripping -
Additionally, All albums for Robert Plant / Robert Palmer are affected - it
is as if SS has correctly grouped them all correctly under the same artist
name but has then made a decision based on something about the artist name
which results in the symptoms now displayed.

I shall persevere!

Richard

Incidentally, Mp3tag does support TSOA:

...not that those instructions say how to display it, but it seems to
be able to write to it.

Does either setting actually control _which_ albums might be recognized

This has absolutely nothing to do with how compilation albums are
recognized.
It gives you the possibility to have an album listed under an artist
that is not a performer on the album.
E.g. Blue Note Trip Scrambled-Mashed is a compilation album compiled
by Jazzanova. By setting the band tag to Jazzanova you can have it
listed under Jazzanova even though none of the songs have Jazzanova as
artist. Also when browsing by album it will be displayed as Blue Note

[slim] Transporter - Native support for WMA Lossless?

2006-10-04 Thread bergek

I would like to buy a Transporter for my home but I have two questions
since I have found contradicting information:

1) Does the Transporter support (or will it support in a future
firmware update) WMA Lossless natively (i.e. without having to
transcode it at the server end)?
2) Can WMA Lossless to FLAC/WAV transcoding only be done when the
Slimserver is running on a Windows computer or not?

I would like to rip and play my music from my PC (Windows XP Media
Center Edition 2005) and also use Windows Media Player to transcode and
sync music to my portable devices. However, I don't want to use my PC
for the Slimserver (I will use a separate Linux-based fanless Nano-ITX
system for that). Absence of native WMA Lossless support is currently
the only thing stopping me from placing an order for the Transporter.

Can someone please confirm the status of WMA support?

Thanks!

WMA lossless is not currently supported natively. You can choose to
transcode to flac or wav. I don't think there are any plans for native
decompression as there are MS licensing issues.

Right, it's primarily intended to control the artists that appear in

almost like you need to know what the setting does before you can

Ah, that's a bit clearer now. Thanks. Using that album as an example,
it will be seen as a compilation because the track artists differ.

So if the setting is set to

- List albums by band

then an artist named Jazzanova would appear under browsing artists. I
wonder if the scanner marks the album as a non-compilation to
accomplish this, or will it also appear under 'Various Artists'?

But if the setting is

- List albums by all artists for that album

this is less clear. If you had the first compilation setting at 'Group
compilation albums together' then which setting takes precedence?

[slim] Re: Transporter - Native support for WMA Lossless?

What difference would it make to sound quality? I presume none -
lossless is lossless after all.

I have all my stuff in WMA (for historical reasons - let's not get into
that argument) and can't be bothered converting to FLAC.

I'm assuming the only downside is that my PC has to do a bit more work
to decode in the Slimserver?

Am I right or am I missing something here?

Well, there is a downside although a minor one - if the format is being
transcoded at the server, you can't use FFWD/RWD at the
squeezebox/transporter.

However OP's concern I think is how to get transcoding from WMAL on a
Linux box... I can't write authoritatively on that, so won't try. Only
two thoughts that occur to me - (1) use FLAC in the library and put a
FLAC-decoder in WMP on the Windows box and (2) don't use Linux for the
server!

[slim] Re: Transporter - Native support for WMA Lossless?

2006-10-04 Thread bergek

It should have no effect on sound quality whatsoever. I am more
concerned about how I work with the files if I go the FLAC route. I
assume that it is pretty straight-forward to automatically maintain a
separate copy of all my music at say [EMAIL PROTECTED] to be able to sync to
my portable players through Windows Media Player. The problem is that
when I change the rating for songs in, say, my phone - that change does
not carry over to the original file.

Ideally, I would like to see WMA Lossless support in Transporter or
FLAC support in Windows Media Player. Unfortunately, I think the
chances of either are slim.

ceejay,

Yes I've now realised that about the FF/RWD. I had that feature on my

Anyway, another question. Does WMA lossless get transcoded to FLAC to
stream to the Squeezebox by default? If it was WAV it would obviously
take up a lot more wirelss bandwidth.

Yes, this is less clear. I've never used this setting this way so I
can't tell how it behaves.

One more use of the band tag:
There are artists who issue albums under their own name but sometimes
they append things like Band/Quartet/Quintet... to their name.
In this case I use the band tag to have those albums listed under the
artist name as well.
E.g. Serenade to a Soul Sister by The Horace Silver Quintet is
tagged with The Horace Silver Quintet as artist and Horace Silver
as band. This way the album is listed under The Horace Silver Quintet
but also under Horace Silver together with all other Silver albums I
have.

In Server Settings / Filetypes you can control what conversions take
place. The default, I think, is to FLAC, but you can choose to force it
to use WAV or even MP3.

If you haven't already, do download the software and have a play, using
Softsqueeze as the player. 6.5.1 nightly is recommended.

Even WAV should be ok over wireless as long as you haven't got too much
interference, though - 1.4Mbits.

Hi Steve - this is what my EAC external compressor settings look like
(just for your info :-) works great with iTunes -e WAV Encoder -a
%a -l %g -t %t -g %m -y %y -n %n -i %s -o %d - nothing in
there I hope set them up so long ago no idea what all the switches do
now! Thats the problem with EAC isn't it, lots to set-up.

Well, I'm not using 6.5 yet (I run it on my Infrant NAS), so I'm not
sure in 6.5. I believe it is under player settings somewhere. Sorry
I can't be more specific (I'm several states away from my slimserver

This will, of course, mean you need to use 2 different remotes (or a
universal remote with both codes). Still better than using a book.

OK, I did some research and understand how iTunesEncode works now. Looks
like that was a dead end.

I don't see that you confirmed that iTunes Sound Check isn't set. It
isn't I assume?

And there's an Equalizer as well (bottom right hand side). That's
disabled as well?

Not that I would have expected either of these to affect a transcoding,
but...

[slim] Re: Remote streaming with Palm/Treo 700p: security questions

2006-10-04 Thread rme

I have the 650p treo and use it to access the web interface to control
the sb that powers my outdoor speakers. See attached for a handheld
skin that I modified for useability/speed of navigation on the treo.

Also, I sometimes stream from myip.dyndns.com:9000\stream.mp3 to my
treo using pockettunes though not that often.

I only use the slimserver based security (username/password, no ip
restrictions as my treo ip address always changes) for that streaming
as pssh is rather difficult to use.

In pockettunes, you can setup a url favorite to
username:[EMAIL PROTECTED]:9000\stream.mp3. Setup bitrate
limiting on your player on slimserver to 64k or 96k. However, you can
only stream your harddrive music, not any internet radio streams
through your slimserver. For some reason, internet radio does not use
bitrate limiting.

[slim] Sean Please -SlimServer Salling Clicker 3.0

2006-10-04 Thread Masterbaron

Gentlemen - Sean and others...

Currently Salling Clicker (Jonas) has indicated the following:

Unfortunately, it appears SlimServer 6.5 has broken the
http-interface we use to control it.

Apparently, in Slim's view this API is deprecated. Unfortunately, at
this time I cannot justify further engineering efforts to keep up with
their (from an outsider point of view) random changes.

Regretfully, for now at least, 6.5 cannot be supported.

Best.
--
Jonas

I've used the Palm LifeDrive with Salling Clicker to remote the
functions of SlimServer - it was a beautiful marriage that allowed me
to wirelessly conrol SS from anywhere in the house.

This is a very useful and fluid integration that in my opinion should
be continued in all releases of SlimServer and Salling Clicker...it was
always the openness of SS that attracted me..

Sean - please add this back in the mix - please offer a conduit to
Salling Clicker so this great functionality can go forward with your
great product!!

2006-10-04 Thread radish

FLAC uses typically 6-10 times the bandwidth of a normal radio stream,
so I'm sure this is the problem. You have two choices - lower the
bandwidth requirements using the bitrate limiting feature (this will
lower sound quality) or improve the connection, using a booster, better
antennas, some kind of wired connection, powerline, etc.

that seems kinda disingenuous, given that the information relies on the tag library, and the tag library is pretty minimal for most users. I agree that the functionality is fine as it is, but treble's problem can be summed up more precisely with Slimserver doesn't act like iTunes. He's wanting it to show him a list of songs, then filter that list down when he types an artist into the search box.

 1) Does the Transporter support

(or will it support in a future firmware update) WMA Lossless natively

Maybe.

 2) Can WMA Lossless to FLAC/WAV transcoding only be done when the
Slimserver is running on a Windows computer or not?

As far as I'm aware, WMA lossless transcoding is supported on all
platforms. The default is to transcode to FLAC, that's what will happen
out of the box. WAV is optionally available.

Ideally, I would like to see WMA Lossless support in Transporter
It is supported, just not as a native format. Other than FF/REW, there
is no functional difference between native and non-native support.

[slim] Re: Sean Please -SlimServer Salling Clicker 3.0

2006-10-04 Thread Masterbaron

Slimserver is a great product and 6.5 is finnally offering a better
browser functionality - if only the clear button along with the other
buttons were always visible as opposed to scrolling to the top of the
page - other than that it's great.

The biggest drawback however is having to use a line-of-sight remote
which kinda kills the whole idea of mobility within the home. Salling
Clicker presents the capability of remoting most aspects of home
automation with one device (PDA, phone, etc.) - you can control lights
- indigo, computer, photos, itunes, idvd, iphoto, X10 - devices and
previously Slimserver.

What else could anyone ask for?

The whole-house functionality comes together in this way without the
need for line-of-sight - this is topshelf and just what people want!

Sean can you get a dialog going with Salling Clicker and if not can SD
take the next step with SB Transporter and provide a wireless
solution for control - you guys will have it all in one bag if you do
that

artwork can seriously clog a large library down, which is why I think
the option to disable it was originally there, are we supposed to
manually remove artwork if performance is hit by a growing library?

It's good to see that I'm no longer the only one wanting native WMAL
support. I don't have a Transporter or any plans of getting one, but I
already bought 3 SB3's and have my WMAL library is growing bigger every
day. And, even if WMAL is a closed and licensed format it makes my day
easier when working with various other software for different media
player devices. I like to spend my time listening to the music, not
playing around with different formats. It's all about the music,
remember!

I would like for SlimDevices to step forward and say something official
about this soon. Maybe just to show us that the licensing costs are so
huge that they cannot be justified. However, I would even be willing to
pay a small fee from a WMAL license for my boxes.

[slim] Re: Sean Please -SlimServer Salling Clicker 3.0

2006-10-04 Thread radish

If Sailing Clicker don't want to support Slim, that's their problem. In
terms of non-line-of-sight control, there are a ton of options. I can
control all my players from desktop PCs, laptops, my PDA, even my PSP.
If I had a smartphone, Treo or similar that would work too. And then
there's the excellent Nokia 770 with it's custom control interface.

If the guy who writes SC wants to come on here and get help with
whatever problem he has supporting 6.5 I can guarantee people will help
him out. My guess is he just doesn't see it as a priority - and that's
when being a customer of a closed source application sucks.

I would like for SlimDevices to step forward and say something official
about this soon. Maybe just to show us that the licensing costs are so
huge that they cannot be justified. However, I would even be willing to
pay a small fee from a WMAL license for my boxes.

Can you explain what it is that makes the current transcoding solution
a problem? I used transcoding for a long time without any problems

Anyway, another question. Does WMA lossless get transcoded to FLAC to
stream to the Squeezebox by default? If it was WAV it would obviously
take up a lot more wirelss bandwidth.
Even with native formats, FF/RWD is so bad that it's virtually unusable
on a Squeezebox. The architecture of Squeezebox/SlimServer and its
handling of remote commands introduces so much lag that it's an
extraordinarily frustrating experience.

I don't say it's a big problem, but the lack for FF/RWD, the
transcoding is a more complicated process and therefore more likely to
fail/have bugs. It also uses resources on the SS machine which is
really not needed. Many people would probably like to use a very low

I myself has a few minor issues which may or may not be related to the
complex transcoding issue done at SS. Tracks are a bit slow to start

all the time and the transcoding is the problem, but the problems
starting tracks from time to time would probably be better if the

As for the FLAC/WMAL war: For me it comes down to usability since

Squeezebox will respond to the infrared signals intended for a JVC DVD

how to program your remote to send these codes. If you have a Philips
Pronto remote, check the Plugins page on the Slim Devices website for
some pre-programmed screens for this remote.

The plugins page referred to can be found at

Go ask on the NAS forum. I think there are people transcoding on there

resources used by a decode are very, very low, and adding a FLAC encode
as well still isn't much.

[slim] Re: Sean Please -SlimServer Salling Clicker 3.0

2006-10-04 Thread Masterbaron

hello and thanks for stepping forward - this is the food of the gods for
some...

SC does have very limited functionality remaining with 6.5 - you can
start and stop a song, you can skip a song i think. you can NO longer
see the tracks that are playing and you can'y raise or lower the
volume.

Jonas (SC) says much more is broken then meets the eye.. here's his
email response to me...

Actually, the functionality is a lot more broken than you think.
You're seeing limited functionality as you'd previously used the
controller with an olders version of Slimserver. The parts of the
scripts that deal with player selection and such hang (because the
web API that slimserver provides hangs). So a new user wouldn't get
it to work at all.

It is actually quite a lot of work to redo this. Probably two weeks or
so of full-time work to completely replace (and test) what has been
lost.

Also, to say the scripts aren't open source is not quite true. They can
be opened, inspected and modified by anyone. In fact, like I indicated
in my last email, I'd encourage this.

However, what SD recommends we use is a telnet-style API, and it'd be
difficult to harness such a thing from AppleScript. The HTTP-based API
previously offered is what's broken; not sure how much of it. It'd
probably be easier for them to fix this than to change the controller
scripts.

so as you can see there more going on here - the email address to SC is
[EMAIL PROTECTED] - jonas is very good at responding
promptly..

i called SD today to ask a stupid question are there plans to support
wireless remote and i'm sure you know the answer..

so thank you upfront for your time and assistance - and to be honest
when i get home tonight i'm going to try the SD handheld interface
(duh).

[slim] Re: 1 Squeezebox, 1 Transporter, same room .. how separate remotes?

2006-10-04 Thread markmarz

Thanks for pointing me to the settings in the web interface. I enabled
jvc-dvd only for the Squeezebox, and disabled jvc-dvd for the
Transporter.

Result is the Squeezebox doesn't respond to either remote and the
Transporter responds to both. This makes sense to me. Provided there is
some way to set the original Squeezebox remote to output jvd-dvd codes
only.

How?

Thanks all.

[slim] 6.5.1 and Radio Stations

2006-10-04 Thread mark3866

Updated to 6.5.0 then 6.5.1. Radio stations did not work on 6.5.0 but
did in Squeezenetwork. When I went to 6.5.1 the radio stations came
back but I cannot SYNC them. It just stops at connecting. So then I
reverted back to 6.3.1 and syncing and radio stations work fine. But
now when slimtray starts, it starts with the slimserver stopped and I
have to manually start it.

How do I change it back to starting the slimserver when slimtray.exe
starts?

Anyone with similar issues with syncing internet radio stations in
6.5.1?

Thanks,

Mark Miner

Looks like the word is that status.txt has been deprecated for a long
time and will no longer be supported in 6.5 for use as a CLI interface.
Jonas is aware of the proper telnet CLI interface and should move to
that. Some good news here is that the AppleScript for controlling
SlimServer is open and anyone could update it.

2006-10-04 Thread Masterbaron

as i told you Jonas is good about followup - here's his latest
suggestion:

he says to start with this -

curl http://192.168.1.192:9000/status.txt?p0=playerp1=count;
(replace the host:port appropriately)

This call never finishes.

the above is the content of his message - he also indicates he may
separate the SS scripts from the install and make them a separate
download - allowing others to update, tweak and modify the scripts as
time goes on. So - while not open source the door is open.

I will try to assist wherever i can with testing and feedback - i feel
this is an important integration that offers users a professioal
one-stop remote option for the automation heads and lazy souls like
myself. i only wish i was proficient enough to contribute more to the
community.

 I don't think anything outside a
windows PC supports wma lossless natively.

Windows Mobile devices also support WMA Lossless natively. This means
not only telephones (which is fairly useless, because a 1GB miniSD card
isn't exactly the ideal place for lossless), but also Portable Media
Center devices (far more useful, especially with a 60GB Toshiba
player).

Nothing running non-Microsoft operating systems supports WMA Lossless,
though.

WMA Lossless definitely isn't as open as FLAC, but it's no Apple

Anyway, open source arguments notwithstanding, the current situation
kinda sucks for lossless people. There's no lossless format that will
natively work on the best software (Windows Media Player 11, which only
supports WMA Lossless), the best portable device (the iPod, which only
supports Apple Lossless), and the best networked device (the
Squeezebox, which only supports FLAC).

Which is why I'm converting my WMA Lossless library into a FLAC library
(for use with the Squeezebox) plus an MP3 cache (for use with
everything else). I figure that portable devices and PCs are
compromised enough that MP3 should be good enough -- and if I really
care about sound quality over usability on the PC at some point, I can
just use Foobar to directly play the FLAC library.

Re syncing radio stations, you mean on 2 or more SBs or SoftSqueeze?
Usually radio stations can't be sync'd because of network latency and
more importantly, because the tracks are usually one long stream. So
even if they start out sync'd, they'll tend to drift out of sync as
time passes. In contrast, when playing from your library slimserver can
re-sync at the beginning of each track. Any sync'ing of radio stations
you had was probably a fluke.

debateable as there are several very good portables that natively
support FLAC.

all that said, the basic problem is choosing closed, proprietary
codecs designed to lock you in, then asking for support for them
from the competitors of the codecs' creators. slim responded to
user demand for FLAC because they could; it was open, free, well
documented, had C reference decoder with source, and widely
supported. it is not so easy for ALAC or WMAL for many reasons.

I think your solution of using FLAC + MP3 is the most reasonable
right now.

Neither will ever support the other. Your only chance to win, as a

I saw this and obviously was interested. But on reading deeper, what Jon
is offering is the ability to ADD Fairplay DRM (or a clone of it) to
content to enable it to play on Apple systems.

I'm not sure exactly who this helps, but I'm probably being dim. As far
as I'm aware most Apple stuff will play non-DRM content, but I guess
that could change. It also wouldn't surprize me if Apple charge a hefty
sum for DRM-ing your content if you're a label or whatever. So I guess
this is a way of chipping away at the overall monopoly they have.

But in terms of the your Squeezebox playing iTunes store content, it
doesn't help . . yet

It lets you, at the very least, have a very good expectation that you
can switch to something else at any time. If WMA Lossless works best
for you now (because you love WMP11, have an Xbox 360 and XP MCE, and a
Gigabeat S, for instance), you can put your music into WMA Lossless
without worrying that you're getting permanently locked into a roach
motel... or tethered to Microsoft.

all that said, the basic problem is choosing closed, proprietary codecs

But Slim Devices isn't a competitor of Microsoft. They are -- or could
be -- a partner, like Roku or D-Link or the other people making
PlaysForSure devices. (And none of those can play WMA Lossless,
either; but partners making feature request of Microsoft aren't the
same as competitors doing so.)

Obviously, Slim hasn't historically been particularly interested in
being a part of the full-on Microsoft ecosystem -- and based on how
badly the PlaysForSure partners have gotten fucked over with Zune,
that's probably a good decision -- but they're still not a competitor
in the way that Apple is.

I think your solution of using FLAC + MP3 is the most reasonable

Me too... for me. But if I didn't have a Squeezebox, or lacked the
technical inclination to make Foobar become a reasonable program, it'd
be hard to argue with WMA Lossless.

Anyone who wants to sell music that will play on an iPod -- think
Rhapsody, Napster, Yahoo, or anyone else who licensed DRM from
Microsoft. They'd LOVE to have their stores work with iPods.

Of course, this isn't really that, because if Apple didn't license it,
Apple can (and based on historical precedent, will) break it whenever
it feels like it.
