[slim] Re: Three MusicMagic Questions

2006-10-23 Thread dip

When I click on Send to Windows Media Player is opened and an error
message appears that it cannot play the song (sometimes it says the
media format is unvalid, sometimes the track is corrupted). I found no
way to change the send to button to send the songs to Slimserver. In
the MusicMagic options I can only choose between Windows Mediaplayer
and Standard.

Any further ideas?

For your questions 2 and 3 i think the answer to both is 'no'. the pay version allows you to create waypoint mixes (i think i read about that on here) but you'd create them in MusicIP and send them whereas i run MusicIP in server mode so only open the application to scan new music

There have been some changes in this area recently (mostly for the

Trying to be a bit more helpful, though...

I use the ; character ... I don't know for sure, but its possible that
/ , having special properties in some cases, might not be liked any
more. [And btw you could do a batch change of your entire library in
less than 5 minutes using mp3tag if you had to].

However someone else around here did, I think, report that having
spaces either side of their separator caused them a problem, you should
certainly try removing it for a few.

Again, if this is the problem, I'm sure mp3tag would do a batch fix
for you.

[slim] Re: Squeezebox-like device for video?

2006-10-23 Thread SadGamerGeek

I've been quite keen to get my music DVDs on a hard drive (and play back
via my excellent Xbox Media Centre less excellent Snazio HD player),
but the fact I use wireless (at least to connect my Xbox) is a
problem.

I don't want to lose any quality/extras (or most importantly the
menus), so I'd been just using DVDdecrypter to dump an enter ISO image
to a hard drive play that. Unfortunately some disks (my Chemical
Brothers Singles one in particular) just seem to be at too high a
bit-rate to be able to stream flawlessly over my (less than 100%
signal) 54g connection.

For me, I thin this exercise may have to wait until I can either:

1. Improve my wireless reception
2. Get my whole house wired
3. An alternative such as the IP over mains power

Shame that!

[slim] Re: Logitech to acquire Slim Devices!

2006-10-23 Thread bpa

This is a bit off topic first.
Not completely separate - Porsche own 25% of VW (i.e. blocking rights)
and F. Piech chairman of VW supervisory board owns about 12% of Porche
and was CEO of VW up to 2002.

Following the analogy in relation to SD. The VW Phaeton was a
commercial failure - people didn't want to pay over $100k for a VW but
the Bentley (also owned by VW) with the same mechanicals can't keep up
with sales. The badge and pedigree seems to be important to show other
people.

If the same logic applies - Logitech should be able to sell
- cheaper Squeezeboxes in new cases badged Logitech (Powered by
Slimdevices) possibly with cheaper components (e.g. cheaper PS, DAC)
- move the Slimdevices brand upmarket with dearer SB2plus using
technology from transporter.

Isn't this what Logitech is already doing with their $10 and $100
keyboards ?

There's probably not much you can do about it. The problem is the small
buffer in the slimp3.
I have a slimp3 and sb2 and use them synced together sometimes. I only
get dropouts on the slimp3 when browsing artwork pages with more than
just a couple of covers to display (e.g. browse by album). This also
happens when the slimp3 isn't synced to any other player. This is on a
800MHz headless linux server with web server forking enabled and
streaming mp3 transcoded from flac.

I generally think people are more brand conscious when it comes to cars

Yes, thier online encoding. It can sometimes take up to 24 hous for

Indeed, well said. You make an excellent point, and i do largely agree
with you.

But you could look at it another way; By using Bittorrent you are give
the RIAA/BPI the excuses and ammo they need to continue on thier stupid
crusade and using heavy handed tatics and overly restrictive DRM because
we are all criminals and must be stupid at any costs (consumer rights).
Using AllOfMP3.com could be considered a 'protest purchace' in many
ways. If The RIAA/BPI could only just realise that this is what
customers want.

That said, i do prefer to buy CD's when i can.

For me, it's not about the price, i would be happy to pay more - it's
about quality, value for money, choice and the ability to play my music
where, when and on what device i want. I'm not actually anti-DRM per
say, if the record industry wanted to win people over they should force
the music vendors to open up the DRM to allow people to use there music
on all there devices, while still retricting the sharing for files.
Such a system is not imposible - the music could be locked to my PC,
allowing it to be played on my Squeezebox, ipod, PDA, whatever without
me sharing it with someone else, simular to what thet are doing with HD
content.

But it's not just the RIAA/BPI's fault, the likes of Apple are wrong to
lock down thier music to thier devices. If every vendor opened up thier
DRM then Apple, etc, could actually gain some customers, such as the
ones that have bought lot of MS Plays For Sure stuff but would now like
an Ipod to pay it on. People would by more music too - If they starting
making CD's that could only be played on one CD player, it market would
fall through the floor. So by that logic, opening up DRM would make the
download market properly explode. It would be better for consumer too,
as music prices would have to become more competitive, the services
would have to offer better quality and the player manufactures would
have to concentrate on just making the best devices, as they can't rely
on Jo Public having to buy device X just to play the $/£100's of music
they have invested in.

AllOfMP3 may not be the most ethical of companies and thier days may be
numbered. But good on 'em i say, there are a shining beacon for how
music should be sold, even if they are just in it for the money.

I am ranting a bit now, so i will shut up!

[slim] Re: Squeezebox-like device for video?

2006-10-23 Thread JulianL

Thanks for all the answers. This has given me a huge start on looking at
suitable technology. SadGamerGeek's solution is temping because it would
force me to buy an X-box (such hardship!) although I would prefer to use
a PS3 because I prefer to support Blu-Ray rather than HD DVD. The
trouble is that right now the Xbox seems to be way ahead of PlayStation
as far as media centre capability is concerned but I can't believe Sony
can afford to allow this to continue for too long. Then again, maybe
Sony can't afford much nowadays after all their battery-recall and PS3
shipment delay disasters!

I won't clog up this thread much more, since I'm aware it isn't really
SB-related, but I will say one thing re SadGamerGeek's poor streaming
speeds over Wireless since that is something that in poor reception
could affect SB2 users.

I just did a bit of Googling and the new 200Mb powerline devices
(conforming to the newer Homeplug AV spec) seem to be available now and
not too expensive. Here's a link to the Netgear stuff (from the UK site,
but I would expect that the same stuff must be on the other country
sites): http://www.netgear.co.uk/wallplugged_adapterkit_hdxb101.php

Although my wireless SB2 works perfectly, my experience of using
802.11g for connecting remotely to another PC to use some remote
desktop software to control it is that even on an empty network with
100% signal, 54Mb connectivity, and the devices about 2 metres away
from each other, the effective bandwidth is still way short of the
theoretical 54Mb. I eventually switched to 100Mb wired to connect to my
other PC and got at least a 5 times performance increase if not greater
so I suspect that my effective bandwidth over my perfect wireless
connection was 20Mb or even less. If the Powerline devices only deliver
even 15% of their claimed performance then you (SadGamerGeek) should see
a massive improvement. I personally hadn't realised how far the
technology had come on in the last 18 months so I thank SadGamerGeek a
second time for inadvertently encouraging me to go off and explore the
latest PowerLine technology and discover such a pleasant surprise.

Thanks again to everyone who steered me in some good directions. It
seems I actually have a number of attractive options and I thought I
had none. A perfect result!

I buy more music now its reasonably priced, for example I went to a
comedy performance at the weekend and liked some of the music tracks
used during scene changes and off the back of that purchased two
albums, if I was paying iTunes prices I wouldnt have bought them.

I agree with much of your sentiment but not your solution. Many (not
all) record companies are inefficient, ultra-conservative, promoting
their safe trash over interesting but risky music, and give too little
back to artists. They are not ideal.

But to use AllOfMP3 is the best way to kill off music altogether. If
the artists get no money, they will just have to stop.

If you want to protest, why not download via Bittorrent and donate £3-5
per CD to a music charity (or even to the RIAA/MCPS, for direct
distribution to the artists!). It would be interesting to see the RIAA
launch a lawsuit on someone who had paid them directly for the music!

[slim] Re: Visa and Mastercard Cut Off AllofMP3

2006-10-23 Thread smc2911

Interesting thread. Personally, with CD prices so low these days, I have
been quite happy to buy CDs to rip even when I already have an old vinyl
copy. My interest in this thread is prompted by those albums that don't
seem to be readily available on CD. To take one example, I have a copy
of Psychic TV's Dreams Less Sweet on vinyl. There was a CD produced,
but it seems to have been deleted, so what to do? I could go through
the pain of ripping from vinyl, but I know that particular LP has a lot
of static and cleaning doesn't seem to help much (true of quite a few in
the collection). Someone is selling a copy through Amazon second hand
for US$69.99 (no royalties for the artist there of course!). I could
try to find it for BitTorrent but, although I have never used allofmp3,
I notice that the whole album is available for dowload for $2.53. Very
tempting (although it does seem to only be available in 192kbps...would
a flac rip of the vinyl be better? probably not!). Ethical dilemmas
abound! If I could buy it on cd for $10-20 I'd do it in a flash.

What are people using for compact players with the Squeezebox?

I have heard of people using setups as inexpensive as a set of powered
set of PC speakers connected to the headphone jack on up to high-dollar
audiophile mini systems.

It all depends on how good you want your sound to be in the kitchen ...
keeping in mind that kitchens don't typically make the most ideal
listening environment with lots of hard surfaces, ambient noise, things
that rattle, etc...

Personally, I think a quality set of powered speakers would do you just
fine if you don't also need the ability to play CD's or other packaged
media or tune into over the air broadcasts.

I made the decision that I would buy now - and maybe again in the
future. I wanted another one which I could work with; modify etc safe
in the bank.

The future is bright - the future is orange. Sorry wrong brand - but
you cannot predict what will happen - probably even SD et al dont
rightly know. The transporter is a definite buy now, may not be able to
again. But I suspect SB's will be around in some form or another for a
long time yet; just not necessarily with the current level of loving
care and attention in the development and assembly. It could be even
more loving care and attention in which case I would buy another...

If Logitech step in and make lots of changes, if there is a cheaper SB3
v2 coming out, if they rebrand the boxes and hardware, I would be
suprised to see it hit the general market / distributors before end
november. Logitech may still try a hard sell for Christmas - but even
then there is probably not enough stock available for demand. I suspect
things will really change (if they are going to change) sometime in the
new year.

Dig #3124 at record companies: why not put your entire deleted

2006-10-23 Thread cliveb

Kevin O. Lepard;148953 Wrote:
Will it make any difference? Any conjectures? Buy a Slim branded

If it meets your needs now, buy now. I own 3 SB2s and 1 SB3, and
would really love to buy a Transporter. I would have no qualms about
 purchasing any of them.
The dilemma is more subtle than this.

I am *very* interested in buying a Transporter. The hardware as it
stands now seems to meet my needs. But I need to know that the firmware
update Sean promised (back when it was still his company), to add the
digital FX loop and fix the vibrating knob even though you've only
used the remote bug, is still going to happen. The danger of buying a
Transporter now is that Logitech might quickly decide it's not in their
product future and cease all development work - and hence no firmware
update.

So the answer seems clear: wait to buy a Transporter until I've seen
the firmware update in the field. But by that time, it's possible that
the Logitech bean-counters have forced some cost-reductions through and
the hardware design has been compromised. There again, it's also
possible that some changes to the Transporter might actually be an
improvement. (One cost reduction I'd be happy about would be the
removal of the knob altogether - it may be cool, but I can't see myself
using it).

So you see, I'm in a serious quandry, and suspect others may feel the
same way.

[slim] Re: I want SS to ignore TPE2 / Album Artist tags?

2006-10-23 Thread broth420

After stripping out the ALBUMARTIST and ALBUM ARTIST tags with MP3Tag, I
noticed that I had another artist field in mp3 only tags called BAND. I
removed that as well. Then I tried it again, and it was a little
better, but still several hundred artists are gone (800 about). I then
looked at my compliation albums that I ripped in FLAC, and there was
another field, called ENSEMBLE, with Various Artists in it. I removed
this as well from all files. I rescanned again, and it was better, but
I still was missing 600 artists. I gave up, reinstalled 6.3 and
rescanned again. Now, I have a bunch of albums that are cut up. All
are various artists albums, and I could not figure out what the heck is
wrong with them. I restored the old, unedited files that worked fine,
and rescanned. Same problem. All my compilation albums messed up. I
would have three albums with the same name, with 4 or 5 tracks in each
one. All the tracks and artists were there, but I suddenly had 70 more
albums.
I was baffled, so I decided to remove all my playlists and rescan
again. Once the playlists were removed, my libary returned to normal.
I then put the playlists back in the correct folder, and had SS just
scan the playlists. Everything was fine.
Sorry about the long story, but I am getting to the point
Finally, I reinstalled 6.5.1, removed the playlists again, and scanned.
MY LIBARY DATABASE IS CORRECT!!
But...when I click on the artist Various Artist it shows all my
albums (not just the compilations).
4. I click on any album, the contents are blank
5. Click on various artists in the path above (Home/artists/various
artists/...)
6. I get all my compliations. And they are browsable.

Thanks!

I was hoping there was a hidden option in Softsqueeze. Writing a batch
file to run a wake-up program followed by SS seems the easiest option
for a complete programming novice like me.

[slim] BBC feeds move to WMV....

Users of AlienBBC and listeners in general to BBC streams may be pleased
to know that the Beeb is supporting WMV format on all its radio streams.
Previously, only a couple of stations were availble in WMA format.

The Inquirer posted an article today regarding the BBC and MS striking
new techology deals.

http://www.theinquirer.net/default.aspx?article=35282

Article also mentions the Beebs move over to supporting WMA - which is
welcome news :-)

According to a press release from Sonos, the blokes over at the Beeb
have decided to jump ship for relying on Realplayer for web content,
and have switched over entirely to the Windows-friendly WMA format. Now
that the BBC has made The Big Switch, BBC radio stations will be
received automatically for users of wireless music and radio provider
Sonos.

[slim] Re: Logitech to acquire Slim Devices!

2006-10-23 Thread zano65

But for the audiophiles who talk of their audio systems like they talk
of fine wines, mechanical watches or art, this doesn't really work.

Hello,
all along this thread i keep reading how audiophiles like a product
or don't by just looking at the brand name or the faceplate. Please
stop that nonsense. I could be labelled as an audiophile, yet i've been
listening to music from a computer for many years, using a pro soundcard
or now the Squeezebox. I don't have fancy cables (1 or 2 maybe...), i
have a Tact RCS but also some cheap DVD players, a turntable,...etc.. I
make my choices by gathering informations (friends, forums, magazines)
and in the end by listening. In France, a very popular item among
audiophiles is a cheap Philips CD player, the 723 (cost +/- $120) and
it got good reviews from HiFi mags. An audiophile is a person who loves
music first and then seeks for the best to listen to it. Maybe you have
met a fraction of the audiophile community that we call idiophiles,
who come with big money and no clue at all about sound. I have met one
who can hear the advantages of the green pen on a cd but can't realize
that one speaker has a broken driver, another one with a full Tact
system which gets worse every time i pay a visit, but they are a
minority.
I first heard of the squeezebox on an audiophile forum, by participants
who had megabucks systems, and speaking of brand names, a thing called
Squeezebox by a company called Slim Devices hasn't got great
credibility, could have been Logitech as well.

Your post triggered my answer but it's not specially directed to you,
it was just the last drop.
Best regards,
Jean.

They've offered to give 15% of their income to the record associations..
the record associations have just been greedy and not taking the money.

They have a product, at a resonable price point. (a full 80 minute cd
at the quality I like comes to ~$3-4$..) - and it's extremely easy to
use. I.e. I think of something I want, I go to their site and add it;
my slingbox server has a program which then automaticlaly downloads
it.. - why wouldn't you use that? so far the record asssociations in
the US haven't given us anything with anywhere near that usability.

They pay no money to the artists. The fact that it may be legal in
Russia does not make it ethical anywhere. These guys are worse than
the touts at car boot sales - at least *they* are honestly dishonest!

I hate the RIAA, BPI et al as much as anyone, and think that they are
using bonkers tactics. But that doesn't mean the artists don't need
money - especially when you are looking at small, niche stuff.

Please be sensible - buy some CDs; music is good value - how many

I wouldn't mind making separate subdirectories as a workaround as long

on the same box and give them different directories per SB3?

Let me introduce myself. My name is Junien Labrousse, Logitech SVP of

Greetings! Let me introduce myself: I've been a user of the SlimServer
software for several years, loving it so much that I built a computer
just to house my music library and SlimServer installation, researching
and learning open-source operating system s (I chose FreeBSD) to do so.

However, I've never been able to afford a Squeezebox. I use the
software every day (in conjunction with the MusicMagicMixer after
ripping my CDs with EAC and tagging them with the MusicBrainz tagger),
streaming music from my home to my desktop at work. At home I have
softsqueeze installed on the family laptops and they use it. So, while
I absolutely hope you can continue to maintain and even improve the
audiophile aspects of the current Slim Devices products, I've always
hoped that there would be a low-cost alternative so that it could be
more easily adopted by more typical, non-audiophile consumers (of
course while still sounding great). I guess I just want you to hear
from a customer who has been waiting in the wings for a lower cost
product. I'm willing to sacrifice features of the current device so I
can more readily get networked audio into multiple rooms of my house.
Personally, I would sacrifice the built-in display and the digital
outs. For display, just give me an S-Video, or even composite video,
and I'll hook it into my existing home theater.

Again, don't take the display and the high-end D/A converters away from
the people that want them! Just hit me with a $100 product without
them. :) In the meantime, I'm a very delighted SlimServer user.

I've been using MusicMagic/SlimServer together for several months now,
and if there is a way to do this through the SlimServer interface, I
have not found it.

At the time that I purchased the premium version of MusicIP, that was
the ONLY way to get the SlimServer integration. That was when they
called themselves Predixis though...if you have found that you can do
SlimServer integration with the free version, then the primary reason
to upgrade is probably just to show your support.

Actually look at this, this is the Free vs. Premium chart:

[slim] Re: Sonos-style remote control for Olive music servers

2006-10-23 Thread bklaas

I think that's pretty cool that Olive embraced the 770 as a remote
control. The statement Olive's new RONDO remote control interface
works with any networked PC, touch-panel, or PDA. translates to it's
browser-based. They're just using the 770 as a type example of how a
browser-based remote app can be a nice way to control things. I applaud
them for that.

Also, I echo what KDF and aubuti said-- This is already available with
Slimserver and Nokia770 skin. I've said this on other threads, but I've
gone to great lengths to approach a remote control like experience
with the Nokia770 skin by using AJAX for background calls to
slimserver.

FYI, both Nokia770 and Touch skins are very nice to use on a plain-ol
PC, with the one caveat that IE is buggy, so you should use Firefox or
Opera. Give 'em a shot. I dare ya.

an aside, what the heck is the guy doing on

I plan to buy soon, can't afford it right now but definitely want to get
a new Squeezebox soon. Funny I was thinking of selling my original Slimp
3 and original SB but now I may re-consider that for sentimental reasons
if nothing else.

Or Flash? Is Flash available on the Nokia? Either it's a photoshop mockup

http://www.olive.us/p_bin/?cid=controlaction=flash

There's absolutely nothing in those photos that isn't being done in
already the Nokia770 skin with AJAX/CSS/HTML. No flash needed, and I
have progress bars, buttons, etc. I also have a nice 1-by-1 artwork
browser to flip through albums in a virtual pawing through the CD
stack way. Even though it looks like they spent some good devel time
on the interface, there's nothing like that shown for the Olive
interface.

From what I can tell, the Olive interface looks much more like a
browser-based interface than a flash app. Since they are touting that
it works on lots of platforms, my hunch is that I'm right.

Speed,

Looking forward to seeing your Crestron module. I'll be happy to test
out the demo, and am willing to pay for the non-demo version if it
works well.

Please post in General when you've got it ready.

Clive, I've said this before but please don't take anything we say with

that is why we don't make such commitments. However, we do from time to

[slim] Re: QUICK HELP PLEASE - Slimserver not playing AAC M4a files

2006-10-23 Thread patrija

OK, played around more with this tonight:

1) Reconfirmed that the m4a files do not play.

2) Did a SS uninstall and deleted the program directory. Installed
today's SlimServer Version: 6.5.0 - 9916 - Windows XP - EN - cp1252.
The m4a files play.

3) Then did another SS uninstall and deleted the program directory.
Installed today's SlimServer Version: 6.5.1 - 10449 - Windows XP - EN -
cp1252. The m4a files will again not play.

I'm obviously going to revert back to 6.5.0. Clearly seems to be
isolated to a problem with 6.5.1.

Just to follow up, I seemed to have solved the problem. To answer the
previous two replies; it's a fresh install on Windows XP and there was
nothing in the app event log. I uninstalled and reinstalled and then it
started up fine. Not sure why, but it worked.

[slim] Harmony Owners - Setup suggestions

2006-10-23 Thread jeffluckett

I just purchased a Harmony 688 and am quite happy to have been able to
stow MOST of my collection of remotes.

However I haven't been able to put the Slim remote away just yet as
I've noticed the default profile they have for Squeezebox is rather ...
screwy.

Please share how you have configured your Harmony remote to work with
your SB.

Ok ... the basic buttons are pretty much ok. I've remapped and added a
few so I don't quite recall the original setup, it was ok but less than
optimal.

The soft buttons on the other hand are rather odd...

LED?? What's that?

Then the Album, Artist, Song soft buttons seem to have zero effect at
all.

I guess I could just delete them off the profile, but I'm wondering if
someone's figured out how to make use of them. Do I need some plugin
for SS? Do I need to be on a particular menu to make them work?

I guess I'm also looking to hear about how people might have mapped or
remapped the hard buttons to be a little more intuitive or useful to
them.

Keep in mind, I'm not complaining at all about the Harmony. Quite the
opposite, I am quite happy with it, just looking for some user
experience on how to get the most out of it.
