[slim] To use squeezebox as a virtual sound device?

2006-11-04 Thread frui

I'm a complete newbie totally lost in the fun of my toy. There seems to
be great potentials yet to be uncovered. I mostly want it to be a
external soundcard, so that I can watch DVD, listen to midi files, or
even play games with that great little BOX!

Technically it should not be that difficult. Basically squeezebox IS a
wireless soundcard. I just don't see why it still must be used in a
clumsy "database" mode which has to be reconstructed from time to time.
All I want to see is a program that makes squeezebox appear in "sound
and audio devices" under windows control panel.

Is it possible, or is it already achieved?

[slim] Re: Squeezbox skipping or just ending when playing FLAC

2006-11-04 Thread toddmcollins

the only thing that I've noticed is that the "time remaining" on tracks
appears to be always wrong and adjusts itself by skipping seconds.
Perhaps concurrently with the skips (can't really tell since the
server.log file doesn't log the time of writes) is the following error
msg:

Slim::Utils::Timers::adjustAllTimers (224) adjustAllTimers: time
travel!

Question: What do playlists mean to you?

- Never or very rarely use them
- Not a big problem: use static playlists for parties or similar,

- Use static playlists a lot, would like to see better features for
  managing them
- Want smart or dynamic playlists. iTunes integration and/or plugins
  usable (but could be better!).
- Smart or dynamic playlists are very important, current options not
  good enough, must be improved
- Critical: Playlist handling must be improved or I'm out of here

I just don't really grok the concept of "playlists". I abstain.

What I want is the ability to interact with my collection in a variety
of ways. For instance: I want to organize songs and albums by
genre/year/title/flavor/etc. I want Slimserver to learn what I like and
dislike, and to allow me to make decisions based on this... or to have
it make suggestions and suprise me. I want to press a button and have
music play that is appropriate for different situations.

I really don't care what metaphor is used... Dynamic Playlists, Smart
Lists, Magic Mixes, etc.

I use the MusicIP plugin to generate playlists and sometimes name and
save them.
Usually I will start by browsing for a track, then get MIP to generate
a 50 track playlist and play it.
For most classical music or new CDs, I will listen to a complete album.

I can't access live 365 anymore after upgrading to 6.5. Also, slimdevice

I can access my Itunes playlists, and originally could get all the Live

Now nothing connects here.

Hi ceejay,

The wasn't really and option that suited me.

(1) Never use them

BECAUSE

(5) Playlists are important, but the current options don't work

IMHO, at the moment the only way to get 6.5.1 to work 99.9% is the set
the playlist folder to [blank] and do a full rescan.

I'd like to see playlists work but I'm very happy with my current
system. It would be icing on the cake.

Smart or dynamic playlists are lists of songs automatically generated
and managed by your computer, based on criteria specified by you.

There are many ways of achieving that. There's the Apple way and
there's the Erland way.

Don't forget that you can also create crude smartplaylists by using the
browse menu on your Squeezebox. Select "browse by genre", scroll down to
"jazz" and then press play. Voilà! Slimserver will automatically
generate a list of tracks, based on the criteria you just specified
(genre = jazz)

So if you use that function, your are using smartplaylists, even if
you're not using Apple's smartplaylists or Erland's dynamic playlists
plugin.

Now, the question is: is this good enough for me? My answer is "no".
Its much too crude. I want slimserver to generate track lists, based on
multiple criteria, like genre, artist, comment, rating...

ok
- reseated CPU board (several times) (this has fixed it twice in the

snapshot of the results as of the time of this posts:

Observation 1 - roughly half voted for 1 or 2, ie happy the way things

Once you have the SB accessing your server (follow the instructions in

I've gone through many upgrades/downgrades and am very impressed how

However, I cannot get the Squeezebox to update to the previous firmware.
I have alread re-set the Squeezebox back to Factory defaults but it did
not prompt for a firmware update. So, now I am unable to connect to
6.3.1

[slim] Re: What do Playlists mean to you?

2006-11-04 Thread Nostromo

A poll associated with this post was created, to vote and see the
results, please visit http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=29368

Question: What do playlists mean to you?

- Never or very rarely use them
- Not a big problem: use static playlists for parties or similar,
  current features ok
- Use static playlists a lot, would like to see better features for
  managing them
- Want smart or dynamic playlists. iTunes integration and/or plugins
  usable (but could be better!).
- Smart or dynamic playlists are very important, current options not
  good enough, must be improved
- Critical: Playlist handling must be improved or I'm out of here

I voted for #5, but this should have been a multiple choice. I would
have also voted for improved static playlist management.

Right now, playlist management looks like an afterthought, as if you
were supposed to use another app to create and manage your playlists.
Improving Slimserver's UI would help a lot. Nobody would mourn the
departure of those damn up and down arrows, even those of you who don't
use playlists.

OTOH, smart playlists is a very cool feature, IMO. Those of you who
aren't using them are missing out. Mind you, it doesn't have to be
implemented exactly like Apple's smart playlists. I want something that
delivers smartplaylist-like functionality.

[slim] Re: Various Artist Difficulties - Cumbersome Fix

2006-11-04 Thread Roy

Roscoe
I had the same problem as you, what I did find was that if I removed
all my playlists from my playlist folder everything worked fine - weird
or not? No one else seems to have reported that problem so I assumed it
was something in my setup.
In the end I gave up and reorganised my compilation albums into
"artist" folders using MP3tag - easy enough to do - and I can always
move them into their proper album folders if this issue gets resolved.

Good luck

I've been using a workaround by adding the DISC tag to my compilation

2006-11-04 Thread jeffluckett

Personally, I've had bad luck with the 6.5.1 nightlies.

If you want solid performance without "fiddling" with stuff, use 6.5.0
official ... it's generally pretty solid.

The only issue I've had with 6.5.0 and MIP (I'm using 7) is that
SlimServer doesn't recognize any tracks that have accented characters
as mixable. Other than that it's fine with MIP.

[slim] Various Artist Difficulties - Cumbersome Fix

2006-11-04 Thread Roscoe

Like several other posters, I have had tremendous difficulty with
Various Artists since installing 6.5. My folder\file structure for VAs
is: \Various Artists\\artist name - song name.flac.

My preference is to have all artist names within Various Artists comps
appear in the Artists list (i.e. have all VA artists be searchable).
However, some VA artist names show up, and others don't even though
their FLAC tags appear to follow the same convention. I have tried
endless combinations of tags in FLAC to determine the "secret"
combination to no avail.

Today, I tried something that seemed to work, but is even more bizarre.
Using Tag & Rename, I removed all tags for one VA file where the artist
name wasn't searchable. I manually re-keyed the tags (song name, artist
name, album name, album artist), saved them, then did a rescan.
Magically, the artist showed up in the Artist list! Good enough, so
then I tried the same procedure on all files within one VA subfolder.
Rescanned, and NONE of the artist names appeared in the Artist list!

So I went back and tried the same procedure with just 2 files, then
rescaned. For the first file I corrected, the artist name appeared,
but not the second file. As near as I can tell, the only method that
seems to work is to manually retag one file at a time, and do a
complete rescan for each file. Ugh!!! Surely this is a bug?

Even more strange, checking or unchecking "part of a compilation"
doesn't seem to have any effect.

Has anyone else had the same experience, or a better solution? This is
driving me up the wall!

I don't think the COMPILATION flag alone will solve this, but I've been
using it along with a DISC tag which does seem to work. Just set the
DISC tag the same for each track. I use:

COMPILATION=1
DISC=0

I use 0 to differentiate from true multi disc sets, where I do uses
DISC and DISCC. There doesn't seem to be any need for DISCC in this
case, and I'm not sure if the COMPILATION tag is even needed.

When I do this, I don't even see a disc number in the song info. I
don't know whether it's because there is no DISCC tag, or because the
DISC tag is 0.

Even changing to a folders structure doesnt make for a tidy elegant
soluciton with comps.

Fine, I can navigate to "pogo-a-gogo", but If I select Buzzcocks, the
"pogoagogo" title isnt included in my listing, even though they have a
track on this comp. If I tick the box that fixes this, I then get
"pogoagogo" listied however many tracks are in that album in the album
list.

In the past there have also been issues with different generations of
hardware, particularly when transcoding (some take MP3 natively, some
take FLAC natively). Since upgrading to 6.5 I have not had problems
playing MP3 between SB1/G, SB2, and SB3, which was an occasional
problem with previous versions. There is definitely a potential issue
with long-running tracks or streams, particularly with internet radio,
but I know some work has gone into this area and the number of problem
reports seems to have gone down.

Being in camp 1 is my own fault, because I haven't searched the forum or

So let me see if I get this right:
TRACKSTAT SETTINGS/MUSICIP MIXER SERVER PORT: 10003
Server Settings / MusicMagic / MUSICMAGIC HTTP PORT: 10002

Right?

Do I understand correctly that because SS uses the MIP database it can
do without these settings?
If so, and all updates to the DB are handled by MIP, does this do away
with the need to scan in SS ? This would be very welcome, scanning with
MIP goes much much faster than with SS.

Especially the need to do a complete rescan when adding new artwork
sucks, but I don't suppose MIP can handle that for SS...

Thanx for your trouble!

I love the concept of MusicIP and wish it was something that was (1)

That should work.

The arrangement that has caused problems, AFAIK, is where compilation
albums are split up so that there is a folder under each of the artists
who are represented on it.

To repeat, the key is to have one folder=one album. It doesn't matter
where that folder appears in your file system.

album has it's own discreet subfolder, and then each track contains the
actual artist info. This is working fine for me in 6.3. Will it work
in 6.5 and if not what should it be changed to?

Thanks,

Mike

[slim] Re: Slimserver 6.5 stops ... 6.2.1 just works

2006-11-04 Thread mschr

I'm a Dane as well and have never had any problems with the Danish
letters. I've upgraded whenever a new version was released and I'm now
using ver. 6.5.0. Always worked flawlessly.

In your original post you say the error occurs when you're browsing
through the folders. I'm not a tech wizard, but as I understand it
Slimserver is then reading from the hard drive as you browse.

Does the same occur if you're browsing by Album or Artist? (Slimserver
is using its own database)

[slim] Re: Stop this Various Artists Madness !

2006-11-04 Thread smc2911

While I cannot comment with any authority on the thinking behind the
current approach, I imagine that part of it is that if only tag
information was used (as opposed to folders), there could be problems
with distinct various artists albums with the same name. Using folders
allows these to be distinguished. Of course this is a compromise and,
as ceejay says, you can't please everyone all of the time.

[slim] What do Playlists mean to you?

2006-11-04 Thread ceejay

There have been some conflicting guesses in another thread about the
importance of Playlists to this community, so here is a chance to do
something better than guess.

(1) Never or very rarely use them
(2) Not a big problem: use static playlists for parties or similar,
current features ok
(3) Use static playlists a lot, would like to see better features for
managing them
(4) Want to use smart or dynamic playlists, not just static ones.
Current iTunes integration and/or plugins are usable for me (though

(5) Smart or dynamic playlists are very important, the current options

[slim] Re: Stop this Various Artists Madness !

2006-11-04 Thread ceejay

Not as simple as a "fix", sadly. There are so many people out there
with vastly varying music collections, tagged differently, organised
differently, and with different expectations as to how they want it to
work.

SD have changed the code in this areas several times trying to keep up
with all the conflicting requirements, and the one constant is that
they have never been able to please everyone.

As it happens, I'm one of the ones that is very happy with the way its
working right now, so I'm biased!

But don't just assume its "broken", because it isn't. It just isn't
the way that best suits you, which isn't the same thing.

If you organise your compilation albums with one folder = one album you
will be fine.

[slim] Crossfade between successive album tracks

2006-11-04 Thread gborland

According to the online help, crossfade is supposed to intelligently
switch itself off when playing successive tracks from an album.

However, I am playing an album right now and the tracks are being
crossfaded into one another against my wishes.

I'm running ss 6.2.2 and it may have been fixed in recent releases, but
I couldn't find any mention of it in the changelog.

Is this a known issue?

I have reverted to SlimServer 6.2.2 purely because of this issue. It
works absolutely fine in 6.2.2 so something has been changed (for the
worse in my view).

I don't know about 6.3.1 as I never downloaded or installed this and I
can't now get it to test.

At least now (with 6.2.2) I don't have to scoll through multiple
repeated album titles. Bonkers!

I did try changing the compilation tag to solve the problem in 6.5.0
but to no avail.

I'd welcome more input on this from Slim Devices themselves (and anyone
else for that matter - sure this is hurting just about everyone?

2006-11-04 Thread davep

This question comes up quite often - I seem to recall a thread on it
within the last week - and you should be able to find some of these
previous discussions by searching the forum.

The general consensus is that for hardware players running on a well
set up network there is no problem getting and maintaining
synchronisation between them all. There is a well known problem
achieving this between hardware players and software-based players such
as softsqueeze. Your experience trying the latter set up should not be
taken as representative.

For anyone who may be considering the Toppy, I'll just make the point
that the USB connection is very slow. (I think it's described as USB2,
but it seems more like USB1 to me). So transferring recordings to a PC
takes a long time. I sometimes do it, using my laptop, but it's frankly
a bit of a pain. Also, after you've copied them across, although they
are in standard MPG format, the files also have a ".REC" wrapper
(program info, etc) which a lot of video software doesn't understand.
VideoReDo will handle them, though.

I'm not sure how to describe this in the poll options but I feel that
its important to get some feedback if it is the smart playlist handling
or the managing of static playlists that are important.

Personally I don't have a single static playlist, but I have a lot of
different smart playlists (using different plugins). In the suggested
poll options I would probably vote "Important" but I am afraid that it
could be interpreted as if I feel that better managing of static
playlists are an important feature, which I don't. Implementation of
smart playlists on the other hand I feel is very important.

[slim] Re: 6.5.1 mysql problems

2006-11-04 Thread Paul Forgey

I started with the original Squeezebox with version 2 (I think) of the
SlimServer software.

I've pointed Slim Devices products at my friends and family who are
greateful I did.

It's very unhelpful to file a bug on general, unreproducible behavior.

Yes, I could contact support and in the past they have been very
helpful. This isn't a total knock against Slim Devices.

But I can see from searching around the forum the problems I am having
are not unique and started with the mysql backend. It just doesn't seem
work with my music collection.

It isn't just database problems I am tired of. The iTunes integration
via periodic rescanning of the xml file doesn't work very well and
really doesn't work in the context that I would like to use it. Even
incremental scans takes a while and usually just ends up corrupting the
database regardless of backend. Something that acts like an iTunes
shared music client, similar to how support for Windows Media sharing
or Rhapsody work, would be great. Unfortunately, it's a closed protocol
(although it's been reverse engineered).

For example, if I want to just listen to a podcast that I updated, oh
boy. I manage my podcasts with iTunes and I subscribe to a lot of them.
Browsing them with the SlimServer interface is impossible. I know about
the podcast genre. It's not the same easy list iTunes has. Then the
database keeps getting out of sync, showing episodes that no longer
exist or mislabeling them and I end up having to do a clear and rescan
everything (and a very long time) for them to show up properly.

My music collection seems to be presented new and differently every day
until it finally corrupts and brings down the server.

These are just small examples of my frustrations. To say nothing of
coming home from work and wanting to just play a certain album while
balancing my upset 4 month old on my hip and seeing the database has
once again lost its mind.

So, I could work with support and try to end up with a situation where
this is fixed, or I could sell my SB2 and purchase another product
that's a better fit for my needs. I have tried out the Airport Express
and it is something that just works better for me.

Call me old, grumpy or no fun, but I'm past the point of wanting to
tweak with my appliances or even work with tech support to make them
work.

It's just not for me anymore.

Not quite right - 6.5.0 was the first version which used MySQL.
Versions up to 6.3.1 used SQLlite (though you could use MySQL if you
wanted to). If your problem still appears in 6.3.1 then its not due to
MySQL, or else you didn't completely clear out 6.5 when downgrading.

6.5 onwards ONLY use MySQL.

Agreed. Also strange as it clearly isn't happening for most other

What OS? Which version of SS, exactly? What file type? If MP3, might
you have both v1 and v2 tags? Do you have any playlists? Using iTunes?

One interesting (and easy) test would be to create a new music folder
and just copy one or two albums into it. Make sure that you don't have
any playlists in play. Then point SS at that folder as its library, turn
on some debugging flags (d_scan at least, you could also search the
forum for other suggestions), do a full clear and rescan and see what
happens (look in the log file which is accessible from the debugging
page).

I'd be quite interested to know how many people use playlists and what
for - maybe its time for a poll?

Bearing in mind that the important thing in a poll is to get the
question right - and that once you've posted it on the forum you can't
change the options - perhaps we could work out the options first?

A first stab would be:

What do playlists mean to you?

(1) Never or very rarely use them
(2) Minor feature: use static playlists for parties or similar
(3) Important: use playlists a lot, like to use smart or dynamic
playlists
(4) Critical: if playlist handling in slimserver isn't improved I'm out

Don't use this thread to say which you are! Offers for improving the
options are welcome, then lets post it and stop guessing.
