[slim] Re: Night terrors caused by SqueezeBox

2007-01-19 Thread ModelCitizen

This has got to take the cake for bizarrest thread of the year.
One thing really struck me though. Andy wrote some code to address the
concerns of NauticusLX within a day (or two) of his first post, and the
bloke didn't even seem to notice the absolutely superlative (and
second-to-none) customer service and then, couldn't even see himself
straight to say thank you. It just seemed to go right past him!

And towards the end of the thread he seems to question whether Andy
really is a SlimDevices developer too.

Wierd.

Erm, coal is a non-renewable resource (which probably isn't a bad thing
because burning it produces carbon dioxide, sulfur dioxide, nitrogen
oxides, and mercury compounds by the tons).

A quick google yielded the approximation of one pound of coal per 1.25
kWh, which ~ a pound of coal burnt per week to run a Sb3.

If you are using 6.5.0 you should be fine installing right over the

[slim] Dead squeezebox HELP !!!!!

2007-01-19 Thread eliw

My Squeezebox 3 for absolutely no reason has died on me 5 (yes FIVE!!)
days after its one year warranty ended. It has been sitting in the spot
for 1 year lightly used and well cared for - now when I start it the
screen is blank and even though I still see it through the PC no sounds
come out of it.

This has been a VERY sudden death as no problems showed up before hand
- I used it just the night before and it was as ok as ever...

I contacted the retailer from whom I bought it and all they had to say
is " we do have some new ones in Stock " ... nooffer of any other help
whatsoever...

Can someone at slimdevices be undertsanding... This is just 5 days
after the one year warranty - and there is no reason why it should have
stopped working so suddenly.

I still have all the accessories and retail box and everything that
came with it.

Help me please.

You can contact me here : biz @ ird . com

However, I'd be tempted to search the forums and try some diagnostics

2007-01-19 Thread coffeebucket

I've just upgraded from 6.3.1 to 6.5.1 and am experiencing somthing
similar; only it's with FLAC images containing embedded cue sheets.
'Bug 1434' (http://bugs.slimdevices.com/show_bug.cgi?id=1434), which
was resolved over 18 months ago, best describes the problem. The gap
is around 0.5-1 second, but it's definitely there.

Since the gallery view doesn't work for me either, and that's the only
feature I even considered upgraded for, I'll be going back to 6.3.1.
It seems every new release introduces more problems than it solves.

... which is exactly what I'm doing.  Sure, there's technically no gap;
but since upgrading from 6.3.1 to 6.5.1, the last 0.5 to 1 second of
tracks *within* a FLAC image (with embedded cue sheet) are being
truncated. Symptoms closely resemble those described in 'bug 1434'

I understand we're a demanding bunch, and you do your best to strike a
balance between new functionality and code maintenance, but how much
regression testing is performed on a release before it's released to
the public? I've just spent three hours attempting to troubleshoot
this issue while trying to get "Gallery View" to work (with several
library rescans, cache clears and debug switches) and I've come up
empty handed.

My only recourse is to revert back to 6.3.1, and take claims of
increased stability and resolved issues in future release versions with
a grain of salt.

[slim] Change of computer name

2007-01-19 Thread danco

This is an odd problem, most likely nothing to do with
SlimServer/Squeezebox, but since I first noticed it when the SB made a
connection after my router rebooted, it seems worth raising it here.

Using a Mac Powerbook G4, OS 10.4.8, Draytek Vigor 2600 router firmware
2.5.6, SlimServer 6.5.0.

The name of my computer has changed recently in Terminal, though when I
open a Finder window the machine still have the name I gave it.

The new name is Vigor12. I have a Vigor router, and the local IP
address is 192.168.1.12, which is probably why the name ends in 12.

But I have no idea how this has happened or how to change it back.

Draytek support don't seem to have come across this issue. In fact the
support guy keeps referring to SSID which

(i) I would not expect to be relevant, since I am just working locally

(ii) also doesn't seem relevant, as the router (whose firmware I
upgraded recently) does DHCP, but is not a wireless router.

I do have a wireless network (computer and Airport Extreme base station
both wired into the router) which I use for my Squeezebox, and the first
mention of Vigor12 I came across was when my Squeezebox was reconnecting
after the firmware upgrade. And the SB, when I go through setup, now
says "Connect to Vigor12 (192.168.1.12)" when previously (older version
of SS software?) It just said "Connect to 192.168.1.12".

Thanks for your advice but I was aware of this. I mailed to

Hence I wrote here.

Today I noticed that they obviously migrated their support ticket

very well done and positive review of the N800 in mobilecrunch.
http://mobilecrunch.com/2007/01/18/nokia-n800-a-real-world-review-after-one-months-use/

This little snippet was of particular interest to people in this

'The “instant-on” capability of the device makes it ideal for ad-hoc,
spontaneous use whereas even resuming a lap-top from stand-by seems to
take a lifetime by comparison.'

translation: this is a much better slimserver remote than the 770

I have great respect for any gadget reviewer that uses the device for a
month before writing up their impressions. Amazing how many crap reviews
are posted because the reviewer clearly had unboxed it an hour before
writing the article. Nice to see someone still doing their job in the
tech press.

[slim] Re: Crossfeed Plugin

2007-01-19 Thread magnanimous

Was anything ever progressed with a plugin/firmware mod to enable
crossfeed on the SB3/TP?

Reason I mention it is I've just got some Sennheiser HD650s to use with
my WNA Mk2 head amp and Transporter and was hoping to avoid having to
build a crossfeed circuit for this setup.

Cheers

Richard

OK this is going to sound stupid, but my SB3 will often do what you are

to actually unplug the power cord from the back of the SB3, wait a few

well. I know you've been doing diagnostics for days but did you try

I've often un-plugged the power, if I then re-connect the power and
connect to SqueezeNetwork before I connect to SlimServer I can listen
to Radio 1 no problem, if I then dis-connect from SqueezeNetwork and
connect to SlimServer I get the silent treament from SB2, if I then
connect back to SqueezeNetowrk I also get the silent treament from
their too !

The plot thickens, I've even tried upgrading to 6.5.1 & the same
happens -

[slim] Re: Wireless bridge question

I want to be able to do a rsync between 2 servers to keep their music
folders identical (I will update the main server then rsync to the
secondary server). I want to access the secondary server using the SB2
as its wireless connection.

does that make sense?

to expand the application a little, the main server will be in the
house, I'll rip all my music to this. the secondary server will be in
the car with a squeezebox2. I want to be able to rsync from the main
home server to the secondary server in the car using the SB2 in the car
as the wireless bridge. The main server will link through the broadband
router, the rsync will be done as part of the shutdown routine (when
you alarm the car the server in the car will rsync to the house, update
with any changes made to the music folder in the house e.g. freshly
ripped music I put on the server at home and once updated will shut
down).

is this possible?

[slim] Re: Announce: Official SlimServer v6.5.1 Release

2007-01-19 Thread smst

I didn't get a message about this through the announcements list, so I'd
like to take this opportunity to again ask for it to be revived. The
main discussion list is high volume; too high for me. I stay
subscribed to keep abreast of announcements.

I asked about this 'before'
(http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=22737), and some
interest was expressed in an announcements-only list. It was pointed
out that one already exists but is seldom used; this announcement seems
to support that.

In 'bug#3259' (http://bugs.slimdevices.com/show_bug.cgi?id=3259) I
suggested that the announcements list be revived. I proposed that an
announcement made elsewhere should, if some checkbox was ticked on
submission, be copied to the announcements list along with a link to
the _original_ message. Thus, a copy of the 6.5.1 release announcement
would be emailed to all who were interested, and would refer to this
very thread for follow-up discussion (keeping the announcements list
free of follow-ups).

This seems like a good time to raise the suggestion again.

Thanks,
Steve

Yes, that's where the option to name the computer is, and there it
still has the name I gave it.

It does seem most likely that the problem is with the router, except
that the router people have nver heard of this issue.

The only reason I am posting in this forum is that the very first time

Re: [slim] Change of computer name

2007-01-19 Thread Peter

danco wrote:

I think it's the hostname your Vigor passes to your machine via DHCP. If
you want to get rid of it you might try specifying an IP address for
your PC manually.

It's not straightforward to convert from HDMI to RGB - there aren't
aren't any converter cables that I'm aware of and you usually need a
converter unit that adjusts for the differnt frequencies and signal
types. It would probably be cheaper to get a small HD TV like one of

[slim] Re: Gaps between songs in 6.5.1

2007-01-19 Thread slimdemage

haunyack,

I have been out of the Slim World for a while after I returned my
Squeezebox. I thought the concept had potential, but like you I wound
up feeling the product does not perform as advertised. My guess is they
do not have a worthy development team. Just a guess, but it seems like
they need more programmers, and maybe pay them more, and have them work
more hours? I sense you are feeling the "void" and there is little more
they can do. As a test I often try softsqueeze with the latest Slim
Server builds (6.5.1). It does not play back music properly, and does
some of the things it used to do a year ago, like skipping the first
moments of a track and failing to playback gapless albums. I've tried
these tests multiple times with completely different PC's, routers,
wireless cards, and even the actual Squeezebox3. It still has
potential, but just does not work properly. I would estimate the value
of any of these products at around $50, considering the poorly
developed server software. Once they get the software right they might
have a solid hardware product. Apparently there are a lucky few who
have these products working properly (or someone pays them to say so).
You think?

Well over 70,000 tracks played (and scrobbled!) and I still play with
my Squeezeboxes more than any other toy. So when do I get my check
from Logitech? I want to fund some expansion so I have an
excuse^h^h^h^h^h^hreason to buy more squeezeboxes.

(Now, back to Amazon to look for more CD's to buy.. only have 2
enroute, so I better order more.)

[slim] Re: Dead squeezebox HELP !!!!!

2007-01-19 Thread eliw

Thanks for the answer.

The Squeezebox is powered properly - I can see the red light through
the optical port in the back...

The SB screen though is totally blank no display on it whatsoever.

When I go to the slimserver page on my PC, I can see that the SB is
there. I can power it on and off from the server, play tracks on it
even check the level of the wireless connection - which is the same as
it used be before, but the squeezebox is not outputting audio
anymore... So it is not totally dead but certainly half dead... I am
cerainly fully dead because of this though.. we have gotten so used to
it, we have no other music transaport in the house apart from it.

I did send a message to slimdevices support and I am awaiting a
response.

I've had five Squeezeboxen/Transporters and all have worked fine. All

work fine too. It is certain that the very vast majority of people who

[slim] Re: Compilation albums - problem

2007-01-19 Thread naren

Hello,

I recently upgraded to SlimServer 6.5, and ran into the problem posted
by the original poster - all of my compilation albums show up
fragmented when I browse by albums - i.e. one album per artist. I
browsed around the forums quite a bit and realized that this seems to
be a somewhat controversial issue, but I am still left with no real
idea of how to fix this in my case.

My specifics are as follows:

- All of my music is from the iTunes library, which uses an
Artist/Album/Song directory structure.

- I tried toggling the "Group compilation albums together" flag and
rescanning, but that did not work. Is it supposed to work in this case?
(I seem to recall reading a thread about this working only if the scan
order happened to process the tracks of the album contiguously.)

- I tried upgrading to 6.5.1 (from 6.5.0), but that didn't help
either.

- SlimDevices support claims that unless I put all of the music from an
album into one directory, there is no way I can get them to cluster into
a single album on Browse by Album.

Does this mean that I am out of luck with this issue if I use an iTunes
based music library? (Seems kind of strange that the default directory
structure used by something as ubiquitous as iTunes would map to an
undesirable behavior in SlimServer - especially since older versions of
SS seemed to handle it better.)

I haven't tried any of the fancier solutions involving editing mp3 tags
yet, but I would like to know if there was some way to get this to work
without having to mess around with those each time after I have ripped
a CD into iTunes.

If all else fails, is there a way to easily go to an older version of
SlimServer? My concern here is that my past upgrades have always
resulted in a corresponding firmware upgrade on the Squeezebox, and I
am not sure how going backwards on the server version will affect the
Squeezebox.

Thanks in advance for any help...

- Narendran

[slim] 6.5.1 questions

2007-01-19 Thread ulvi

Now that it's official, I am trying 6.5.1 again
(have been using 6.3.1 apart from an early foray into
6.5.1 two months ago). I use WinXP SP2.

One thing I noticed is some of the older skins are missing
(exbrowse, default2). Are these or more skins available
elsewhere as plugins?

The total track count ("songs")
still shows 17 less than it should (I have 49487
tracks (mp3 files) in all; the song count shown
by slimserver is 49470). Also the artist count
is incorrect (2632 while it should be 2633).
I have convinced myself after some debugging that all
tracks are scanned properly and are in the library;
so my current theory is that there is something
unconventional in the way the count statistics are
gathered by slimserver. What might account for
the undercounting of all tracks and artists in the library
in 6.5.1? All counts are accurate in SS 6.3.1.

Also, as other threads have pointed out, FF and REW
buttons don't really work (neither with the remote
nor from slimserver, eg with the fishbone skin, and,
again, all my files are 256Kbs CBR MP3). But this problem
exists with 6.3.1 (and associated firmware) as well.
Any chance FF and REW will be fixed eventually?

Thanks

Ulvi

[slim] US: senate bill threatens Internet Radio with DRM requirement

2007-01-19 Thread peterw

For my fellow US customers... last Thursday, US Senators Dianne
Feinstein [D,CA], Lamar Alexander [R,TN], Joe Biden [D,DE] , and
Lindsey Graham [R,SC] re-introduced a bill called the "PERFORM Act of
2007" [S.256] that, in the opinion of the EFF, would require all
webcasters to use DRM with their music streams.

This seems to me very likely to
1) shut down a large number of webcasts
2) make the others incompatible with the relatively DRM-free
Squeezebox and Transporter devices
3) reduce the Internet "airplay" that artists get, therefore reducing
the SoundExchange royalties that they would have earned

The bill has been referred to the Senate Judiciary Committee. It's
worth noting that the bill's four co-sponsors represent both the
Democratic and Republican parties, and all sit on the Judiciary
Committee, representing one fifth of the committee's members.

EFF Alert:

That's the obvious possibility. But the guy at the Vigor support team
hasn't suggested it as a possibility, and says he has never seen it. Of
course, he may be incompetent.

Also, I can't understand why that hostname should be relevant for
purely local use.

Yes, it does. Optical only, I believe.

My big thing about the Apple TV is the TV part. I have to turn the TV
on to use it. So, even if it sounded as good as the SB, I wouldn't be
happy. I like to turn on my stereo and SB, and just start listening.

Now, for watching TV, the Apple TV sounds interesting. Too bad I'm out
of inputs to my receiver.

[slim] Re: Dead squeezebox HELP !!!!!

2007-01-19 Thread eliw

The sound works it was just all the way down ... but managed to bring it
up from the server software...

But the Screen definitely is dead - not a single pixel is on. And I
made it sure to always have it run at only the 2nd setting for
brightness on IDLE and 3rd setting when working.

What can I do ? - The whole point of having a squeezebox is to be able
to stay away from your PC in the lounge choosing music from the VDU.

Anyone had their screen JUST simply die for no reason ? Surely these
things are supposed to last a bit longer than 370 days?

Thanks, I'll try that next time I run it. I was trying to get there by
choosing one network (from many) on the RHS. *Now* I remember that the
help examples talk about testing signal strength by limiting the
display to your network... now I know why!

> From what I've seen on the forum, 50-60 is borderline...try tweaking

Tonight, it got as far as the Infernal Dance in the Firebird Suite
before barfing. I found that even the 1000kbps network test was
hitting significant dropouts (average 96%, but got much lower on
occasion and even cut off completely at one point).
I switched to channel 6, and twiddled with the router aerials (one
vertical, one horizontal). Signal strength on the SB3 went up to 60-70,
and it's been fine ever since (touch Formica), all the way from Bach to
Ossian (though the latter, I'm shocked to discover, is still largely
96kb wma... and the sources are on loan to folky friends at the
moment.) Maybe a little early to be popping the champagne corks (but
hey, it's Friday!)

This evening, NetStumbler showed a plethora of nearby networks on
channels 1, 6 and 11, which pretty much covers the lot, I guess; but
all were intermittent, and none got an SNR above the low 20s. Mine, and
what appears to be its b*stard sibling (or doppelganger) 00 were
hitting 73.

Incidentally, whilst serving WMA, Network Health is reporting that
streaming is Inactive, and Buffer Fullness shows *nothing at all*.
Maybe the files are just too small to show up! :-) Right now, I'm
hearing glitches that are almost certainly ripping errors (heavens
knows what I used originally), so these are ripe for a flacking... Of
course, if I'm more or less happy listening to 96kbps wma, why am I
worrying about problems with FLAC delivery?! But resorting to bitrate
limiting would've smelt of failure.

A pound of coal per week to run the SB3, or a pound of coal per hour to
run your big screen TV, or 5 gallons of gasoline per hour to power your
SUV down the road- it's all relative.

If you worry about saving energy/CO2/whatever, put your effort into the
things that pay off big, not the things that save 1 pound of coal per
week. Once the other wastes have been pared down to where burning a
pound of coal per week to run your squeezebox has become a big deal,
then start working on it.

Your server that drives the SB causes the burning of a lot more coal
than the SB3. Maybe you should shut the whole system off and not use
it. After all, why should the rest of us have to breathe the air
polluted by the coal burned to power YOUR audio system (or YOUR SUV, or
your whatever)?
