[slim] Any way to filter podcasts from artists/albums menus?
Hi - I'm using 6.5.1 on Intel Mac OS X 10.4.9 with iTunes 7.1.1. My problem is that I use iTunes to subscribe to podcasts for listening on my iPod, but I don't want the same podcasts contaminating my Squeezebox under the artists/albums menus. I do, however, want Slimserver to continue to integrate with iTunes. Is there any way to put the podcasts in a different Squeezebox/Slimserver menu? Or even hide them from the Slimserver completely? Re: [slim] Scanner.exe Crash
Is there a FAQ somewhere showing how to debug and spot the problem file? Re: [slim] Stripping ads from radio shows
I believe the density in the sound during TV ads is higher than in regular TV broadcasts, resulting in a perceived higher volume (in some countries there are regulations on volume of advertisements, set by the broadcaster or the broadcasting authority. Increasing the density, and therefore the perceived volume, has the same attention grabbing effect). This is how your TV/HDrecorder can distinguish between advertisement and general content. If same principle would apply on internet radio, theoretically the same trick could be applied. -- matthijskoopmans matthijskoopmans's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=2622 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=33851 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss
[slim] Firmware 76 - no Wake on LAN
A few people have mentioned in the Beta forum that wake-on-lan doesn't seem to work with Firmware 76. As the current version of Squeezenetwork uses FW76 I guess it can't really be classed as beta. Therefore I'm having a try here as I really miss the function... One person seems to be able to get their PC to wake using FW76 but the others in that thread no longer have that functionality (myself included). I no longer see 'waking slimserver' when pressing (or double pressing) the power button on the SB3 remote. This used to work flawlessly and there have been no BIOS modifications to my PC (not that this would affect the message on my SB3). Am I in the minority? Re: [slim] Why is the Squeezebox so dependant on the server?
I've been doing client / server computing practically since it was invented. (Anybody remember MIT's Project Athena?) One of the design principles that I keep seeing people failing to learn year after year, generation after generation is this: The end nodes ALWAYS get smarter. Make sure your architecture takes advantage of that! Being a computer geek, I decided that instead of simply buying the gold-plated Sonos system that did exactly what I wanted, I would experiment with the lower cost Slim Devices and Roku solutions to home audio. I've been running the cheapest boxes from Roku (the M500 SoundBridge) and Slim Devices (the SB3) side by side for a while. Both solutions lack a crucial feature: multi-device synchronized playback. I'd hoped to participate in development of this feature, but other obligations have kept me away from contributing. So I've been a plain user for a while -- watching both systems when they work, and when they don't work. When they work, BOTH systems are quite nice. Slim Devices, by putting more reliance on the server, and making that open source makes it easier to get new features going, and perhaps to fix problems. When they don't work, the Roku becomes a brick that you can't debug. The Slim Devices is this thing you can take apart and fiddle with, and maybe get working. But why do I find myself prefering the Roku to the Slim Devices system? Because the Slim Devices system, for all its openness and featurefulness, is FRAGILE! It breaks down MUCH more often than my Roku. What is my experience just as a user? I go downstairs, and exercise to internet radio played directly off my Roku. Then I come upstairs and then begin the process of trying to figure out why my Squeezebox won't play today! By having the ABILITY to put some brains in the device, and some brains in a server, Slim Devices has a more powerful architecture. By opening up the development, it has the ability to leverage much more talent out in the world. But by putting ALL the brains in the server so that even the most basic things like connecting to someone ELSE's stream, require perfect operation of the device, the server, and a lot of additional festoons in the architecture, Slim Devices has a total solution that is screwed by, not enhanced by, the tradeoff it makes. If there is ONE thing I would change about the Squeezebox it would be: Get someone to write some REALLY TIGHT, REALLY ROBUST, stand-alone code for the device firmware that enables it to act on its own without a server. Essentially provide the same stand-alone baseline that Roku does. -William Cattey Senior Analyst Programmer Massachusetts Institute of Technology -- wcattey wcattey's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=7506 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=33695 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss
[slim] one proposal maybe useful for displaying Chinese characters
I am a new user from China Mainland, I bought SqueezeBox V3 last week. All I have to say is : it is a amazing product! The small box is so smart that includes all functions i need:) More and more new functions are interesting me during these days ,for example, weather screen saver and rss news ticker are very useful. Thanks to SqueezeBox, I could touch my music so easier than before. There is one proposal maybe useful for displaying Chinese characters. I think the default chinese font is not good enough in some situations. Especially in large size some strokes of chinese characters are missing. So I tried to substitute STXIHEI.TTF for default CODE2000.TTF, and then the chinese characters displaying were more beautiful and clear. STXIHEI.TTF, which in chinese is #21326;#25991;#32454;#40657; #65292;is an open type ,digitally signed, truetype outlines chinese font file. And it is included in Microsoft Office Chinese Edition. I found it in windows font folder. The following two photos contrast the default chinese font and the STXIHEI.TTF font . it's only my opinion. I wish I could do something for this wonderful player. Re: [slim] Why is the Squeezebox so dependant on the server?
You're right to point out that Slim Server has a synchronization feature. Search is not working in the forums right now, so I can't point to the thread I participated in where the extreme shortcomings of the feature were reviewed. Summary: Synchronization works by putting every device in Pause before the beginning of each song, and then sending Unpause to every device. At computer speeds, you'd think this would be enough, but it really works very badly in practice. It presumes that all devices are similar enough in response to commands, buffering, and latency, and that turns out to be totally untrue. With a mix of Roku Soundbridge which emulates Squeezebox 1, Softsqueeze and Squeezebox devices, the differences end up being up to FIVE SECONDS between the devices. With internet radio, there is often no detectable song boundary to pause upon, so that implementation simply does not work at all. To do a proper synch, one needs synchronized time between all devices to the milisecond level, the ability to establish, and sometimes correct the latency between when a sound sample is received and when it actually makes it to the ears of the listener, and finally the way to unobtrusively stall a stream, or catch up in silences to bring out of synch streams into synch. This all must be done continuously, is a difficult problem, and is not anywhere near being implemented. With regards to the failures I've been experiencing, I do intend to query the forum and advertise the symptoms as soon as search comes back up. I've looked in a couple likely threads, but it looks like a couple months have gone by without people really understanding the issue. I'll mention in passing another observation relating to the fragileness of Slimserver: Sometimes problems are not accounted for explicitly. They mysteriously come and go after new releases. In a sense it's unreasonable for me to expect every problem can be traced to its root cause. The server has grown to sufficient size and complexity to prevent this. Yet, I hold out hope that the internal structure of the server would evolve so that core functionality was dedicated to small, well understood routines, and well understood interfaces and that basic problem manifestations like: -- wcattey wcattey's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=7506 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=33695 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

[slim] Squeezebox and Slimserver can't find each other.
Lately my Squeezebox and Slimserver have had trouble making contact. I hit the power button on the remote and see the mesage: waking up slimserver... and then the screen goes blank. I start the web interface into Slimserver, and it says that my device is not found. I stopped and re-started Slimserver. No change. I power cycled the Squeezebox. No change. The first time I tried to debug this, I started Softsqueeze 3.3, on the same host as my server, and it COULD reach the server, but no sound came out when I told it to continue the internet radio stream that it said was what I'd left off now playing. I quit Softsqueeze 3.3, and started Softsqueeze 2.8. That one made contact, but had trouble doing anythng. Finally from the web interface, I told it to play random mix onto my Softsqueeze. A little while after that I was able to make contact from the Squeezebox to the server, and play music. A couple days go by, and all seems well. But today, again Squeezebox and the Slim Server can't find each other. This time Softsqueeze 3.3 works fine, but no difference with Squeezebox. Seeing in other threads, that sometimes there's a wi-fi issue, I've plugged my Squeezebox into one of the hard wired ports of my Wi-Fi router and power cycled the Squeezebox. Now the Squeezebox seems to be able to reach the server. But I don't know if that's because I've gone hard-wired, or if I managed to do the same shaking loose of the problem that I did last time. Additional information: My players are generally configured to be synchronized, and I wonder if this is creating additional complexity, even though the Softsqueeze is generally not running. I listen to internet radio via Radio paradise, which sometimes has problems with streams hanging up. My Squeezebox is literally five feet away from my wireless router, whereas my server is in the next room. I expect nobody is going to be able to help on this one. I'll run for a while hard wired to the Squeezebox and reply to the thread if the hardwared connection manifests the problem same as the wi-fi. -- wcattey wcattey's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=7506 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=33878 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

Re: [slim] Why is the Squeezebox so dependant on the server?
Nice to see you on the forum, William. Hopefully you do have some time for developing patches/troubleshooting/new features - I'm sure everyone would appreciate the contributions of someone from MIT with the sort of experience you have! :-) wcattey;189906 Wrote: The end nodes ALWAYS get smarter. Make sure your architecture takes advantage of that! They currently are taking full advantage of the processor, even pushing it beyond its abilities: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showpost.php?p=188851postcount=28 Also I hear the firmware is nearly full. To accommodate extra features, including a barebones server, would either require: - a lot more firmware space. It's a hardware change so a new device would have to be introduced. Existing owners wouldn't be able to have this. - removing lots of features in the current firmware. Now there are a lot of features and a few codecs I could do without, so that would be fine with me, however this would cause howls of protest from others. The server in a Squeezebox idea keeps coming up but it's currently opposed to the Squeezebox paradigm - the emphasis is on new features and new codecs, which were made easier to implement since the codecs are all in firmware since the SB2. Putting an elementary server in would require substantial firmware rework as well as removal of a lot of these codecs, plus other features. However things are still being pulled the other way - there are people that would like to see RealAudio, AAC, AAC+, Apple Lossless and Windows Media Lossless added to the firmware. Clearly Slim/Logitech is going to have to start saying no and not bending over backwards to support every codec ever developed natively. In regards to synchronization, there were plans to introduce a fine-grained network clock in 7.0, but I see that's no longer in the software roadmap. Still, as the developers are fond of saying, patches are welcome...if you were to submit code I'm sure it would be well-received given your credentials. -- Mark Lanctot Mark Lanctot's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=2071 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=33695 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss
Re: [slim] display inbound calls on asterisk on squeezebox
Not the most elegant of solutions, however, with grateful thanks to gramels, I have now got this working. As I'm using [EMAIL PROTECTED], I had some fiddling to do: in extensions_custom.conf, somewhere near the top, I created a dummy extension number 1660 with the following: exten = 1660,1,ringing(1) exten = 1660,2,system(/usr/local/slimserver/slimdisplay.pl --name=lounge --line1=${CALLERIDNAME} --Line2=${CALLERIDNUM}) exten = 1660,3,wait(10) I found that dialling 1660 produced the desired effect on internal calls, however, if I included extension 1660 in the ring group (which falls over to an IVR after 15 seconds usually) the IVR would kick in immediately for the caller, the house phones would ring and when answered, no-one was thereand the script failed to run. So..., I created another dummy extension, however, this time, through AMP/FreePBX - ext 211. I dialled into the call forwarding system (*72) and diverted all calls for 211 to 1660. Then I included extension 211 in my ring group. Now I have caller display on my slimp3. -- Jono Jono's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=10803 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=33525 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

Re: [slim] Why is the Squeezebox so dependant on the server?
I think Wcattey is correct in pointing out that increasing the intelligence in SB is a desirable path forward. That is not to say it should abandon it's roots but technology and competition march on. At the end it is as much of a cost decision as a design philosophy. The current SS capability is partially based on the cost of processing power when designed. Looking at the give and take between distributed computing with PC and centralized computing this can be seen. When the computing power to do a particular application well comes down to levels allowing it to be cost effectively implemented at the point of use it is. IN cell phones you can see applications many said wold never be deployed on a phone platform but today a smart phone is a computer capable of handling database, graphics processing, AV processing etc. The cost to deploy greater intelligence in the SB has decreased significantly since the original design. Memory price has tumbled even more and given the very aggressive memory roadmap will continue to do so for some time. An Ipod nano has up to 8gb of flash today. In another year it will be 16gb. Competition will inevitably push the model of independent device capability. I don't think this precludes the use of SS, syncing or the WEB interface. It merely means the device at a minimum may be able to do more independently or even implement some of the synchronization capability on the devices with one acting as a server. Some MPC players have much of the capability of the SS embedded including sorting and graphics display. This underscores the hardware capability at this price point being available. I think the challenge will be to move forward with more device level capability while not alienating the current base by obsoleting legacy devices. -- Pellicle Pellicle's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=9789 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=33695 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss
Re: [slim] Squeezebox and Slimserver can't find each other.
If there is doubt about whether the packets from the Squeezebox reach and are processed by Slimserver - then you can do 1. run Ethereal all the time logging to a ring of files so that you will always have a log of what's has been happening on the network on the previous hours. When the problem shows - stop ethereal and see if Squeezebox packets are being logged and received by server. 2. Enable d_proto on slimserver - this will indicate if packets (including the very first discovery packets) are being received and processed by Slimserver. If packets are not being logged by Ethereal - check wifi and network hardware (NICs, Routers and cables). If packets are logged by Ethereal and not being processed by Slimserver then I'd investigate security s/w - firewall, anti spyware, IM protection etc. If Packets are being processed by Slimservers but replies not seen by Squeezebox - check security s/w. -- bpa bpa's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=1806 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=33878 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

When you have one SqueezeBox, the incremental cost of making it smarter and better is modest. I've got four. Adding $20 to each is starting to get to be real money. Re: [slim] Failed to find Softsqueeze libraries error
Well, I finally found a way to fix this SoftSqueeze problem in 6.3.1 under WinXP in a way that doesn't require the workaround hack I mentioned in a post above. Here's what I did. 1) Download http://slimdevices.com/downloads/SlimServer_v6.3.1/SlimServer_v6.3.1.perlscripts.ZIP Note: This assumes you're running 6.3.1!!! If running a different SlimServer version, find the corresponding zip file (not the exe installer, but the zip) from the downloads section. 2) Unzip it to a temporary folder 3) Navigate to the C:\Program Files\SlimServer\server\HTML\EN\html folder where SlimServer is installed. Use your SlimServer install path if different from above. 4) Delete the entire softsqueeze folder underneath the path in step 3 (and all its subfolders) 5) In the unzipped file from part 2 above, locate the softsqueeze subfolder in the path analogous to that of step 3 above. 6) Copy and paste this folder to your SlimServer installation so it's underneath the path in step 3 above (same path as where the original softsqueeze folder was before, but now the contents are coming from the downloaded zip file). Now the SoftSqueeze subfolder of your SlimServer has been replaced with the one from the downloaded zip file. 7) Stop and restart SlimServer 8) Run the normal SoftSqueeze install procedure from the help page. This made the SoftSqueeze error go away for me. Hope it works for you. -- andy_c andy_c's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=3128 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=27470 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss
Re: [slim] Integrating cover art from Amarok
Hi Bill, maybe this doesn't catch the point for you, but just as an alternative train of thought: You don't necessarily have to use artwork by putting an album.jpg or whatever into each album's folder. You can also use one common folder where all the artwork files are stored together using a naming scheme that identifies them uniquely. With this you don't get into any hassle when concurrent Album/Artist information is stored in the same album folder. The necessary information for this is anyway already there as you read the Album/Artist tags. Of course, I admit there might be other drawbacks with this method, at least for me (as I wrote: ~1000 albums and very few various artists ones) this works pretty well...
