Re: [slim] Various Artists search still broken (6.2)?

2007-04-07 Thread ceejay

I assume you mean 6.5.2, not 6.2 ?

I just tried this on my set up (a late 6.5.1) but it works for me.
Perhaps its just worth exploring exactly what you expect to see when
you search on the name of an artist.

If I search on the name of an artist (Athlete) who I know only appears
in compilation albums, I get something like

Code:

  Artists matching "athle": 1

  Athlete Play Add to playlist

  Albums matching "athle": 0

  Song titles matching "athle": 0

So, no songs found, but I wouldn't expect any. But it does find the
artist - if I click the artist name I get taken to the album and thence
to the songs. I think this is correct.

Is this what's happening to you?

This is with "Group Compilation Albums together" and "list Albums by
all artists for that album" set, BTW.

The other problem is that they don't look like they're any good as a

[slim] OT: Running Cat5 near to mains cables

2007-04-07 Thread jimwillsher

Hi,

This is OT, but is losely linked to this:
http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=22860

I'm currently getting Cat5 cable run to every room in a new house. The
sparkys seem to be running the cable in the same channels as mains
cable (240 volt). (I would have laid the cables myself, except the
house builders didn't allow me).

Can anyone advise how big a problem this will be? The Cat5 will be used
to power squeezeboxes, but I'm also thinking ahead to IPTV etc. In many
cases the Cat5 is parallel to mains.

Many thanks,

Jim

Re: [slim] OT: Running Cat5 near to mains cables

2007-04-07 Thread Ramage

If you are in UK then British Standard BS6701 2004 applies.

This is an extract from an information leaflet:

BS6701:2004

The New UK Installation Standard: BS6701:2004 has been written to
reflect the publication of the BS EN50174 series of installation
standards and the withdrawal of BS7718.

Now for Communications Cabling
The original BS6701:1994 was a code of practice basically dealing with
apparatus connected to the public telecoms network. However the new
standard now covers the installation, operation and maintenance of all
types of "telecoms" (used to describe all forms of communications, i.e.
voice and data) equipment and cabling.

It covers issues like hazards when installing telecoms and datacomms
equipment and cabling, power supplies for equipment, and requirements
for cabling in underground and aerial environments.

Installers & Owners too
The new BS6701 contains requirements not only for installers but also
for the owners of the premises where the installation takes place.

Some aspects are mandatory
The new BS6701 is a BS specification and not just a code of practice.
It is therefore a tool for determining conformance within contract law.
In addition, it is referenced from the 16th edition wiring regulations
making it a mandatory for every installation.

If you are worried, ask the housebuilder whether the standard is being
applied.

Re: [slim] iTunes Intergration Problem

2007-04-07 Thread Moko

Came up with a completly different solution to iTunes problemsdon't
use it!

Instead I am using Media Player 11 which seems to get artwork & info
much easier, and I found a program called MGTEK dopisp which allows you
to sync iPod with media player including all playlists etc.

Sharing the library from NAS server works fine both with Media Player &
Squeeze box so keeping things all Windows seems the way to go. The only
reason intially that I wanted to use iTunes was for syncing with my
iPod & Shuffle and now there is a solution which will even allow me to
sync with my Pocket PC phone so its a bonus!

Wireless connectivity problems generally seem to cause dropouts as
opposed to distortion.

If I heard a distorted file through a SB, I would start by seeing if
the files (or hdd) are the problem. If the files played locally display
the same problem, then you are most likely looking at files that got
corrupted or a problem with the hard drive.

[slim] Warning, new firmware killed Squeezebox 2

2007-04-07 Thread sleepysurf

FYI, when accessing Pandora today, I was prompted to hit "brightness" to
d/l latest firmware. It did, then "rebooted" as usual. However, upon
restarting, the screen flashed something like "factory reset" then went
black. Powering on and off did nothing, nor did the standard POWER +
ADD reset sequence. It appears the latest firmware totally killed my
Squeezebox 2. On a whim, I tried the firmware upgrade on my Squeezebox
3 (I have 3 SB's), and it went fine. There is clearly a problem with
this firmware for Squeezebox 2's. I emailed Tech Support and am
awaiting their response. Anybody else encounter this problem?

Re: [slim] OT: Running Cat5 near to mains cables

I had to put power (8kw cable), cat5 and phone line out from my house to
an out building so as you can imagine it was a fair distance. Plenty of
advice saying not to run your cat5's along with your power cables but I
had no choice, it had to run under floors, loft etc - I had to rod them
into place.

Good news is that I've not had any problems so in my opinion I wouldn't
worry about it, it's cobblers.

[slim] Transporter can't connect to Slimserver

2007-04-07 Thread barty

Hey,

Just a double-check of the brains here before I email technical
support.

This morning I installed the latest build on my iMac and fired the
system up.
Now the Transporter can't connect to slimserver. Slimserver web access
looks normal (except that it can't find a player). My Transporter makes
it through the network set up including obtaining an IP address but then
hangs when trying to find slimserver. It can find the slimnetwork.

Anything obvious I'm missing? Anyone know how to go back one build?

Thanks for any info

Not as a cellphone you'd put to your ear (unless you're a 70's retro
kind of guy who likes the boombox-to-the-ear look), but with a
bluetooth gizmo it would work quite well (yeah, a different, Star
Trekky kind of look). I wouldn't be surprised to see voice recognition
capability in the Shift to let you dial numbers by name or numerically
via voice command.

Re: [slim] Debugging help re Vista m4a issue, please

2007-04-07 Thread bpa

I'm glad to see the timestamps have returned.

Below are two excepts: one from your log and one from from my XP
system. I had d_source_v set on my system which is why there are
additional messages.
Socketwrapper is a very simple program which just has a thread per app.
which reads from the source and copies to the destination - no real
processing so delays are caused either waiting for a read or a write to
finish.
The interesting thing when comparing the logs is the time taken between
starting a read and starting the corresponding write on my system was
1.2 secs but on your system it was 23.9 secs.
Red for my log, blue for your log. Comparing key logs message

SW: 2007-04-05 20:34:12.500 MoveDataThreadProc for step 2 about to

SW: 2007-04-07 12:00:42.923 MoveDataThreadProc for step 2 about to

This indicates that socketwrapper is OK but something is delaying the
reading the file in socketwrapper or the implementation of
socketwrapper in Vista is provoking the delay.
My initial guess would be either network delays if the files are on a
server or security/file locking.
Are your files local or on a server ?

I am unfamiliar with Vista but it looks like something is delaying
access to the file to the socketwrapper program. Playing MP3 files do
not use socketwrapper but still files are read.

I'm not sure what to do - I can build a new version of socketwrapper
which produces more messsages so all the steps are logged with
associated timing.

You could check out if anybody else experience delays with Vista apps
using pipes and/or Named pipes.

Larger excerpt of logs.

Re: [slim] OT: Running Cat5 near to mains cables

2007-04-07 Thread Fletch

You probably won't have any trouble with the ethernet (especially if
your runs are significantly shorter than the 100m limit). However, I
have heard of people having problems with noise from the AC wiring if
you plan to also run analog POTS over some of the cat5.

Re: [slim] Live365 - Login to hear favorite

2007-04-07 Thread schizothymia

To confirm:

I am a VIP member at Live365. I have no problems accessing and playing
stations by trawling through the standard menu options on the
Squeezebox 3 that graces my 2x4.

But - I too cannot set up any Live365 station as a "Favourite".

It appears that squeezenetwork / squeezebox feeds an invalid URL
through to Live365 that fails to "login" properly and play the source.
What you get instead is an audible error message asking you to register
with Live365 by going to a different URL.

This is probably as simple as a typo somewhere... but the original
report of the problem on the Forum seems auite dated. Have I missed
something somewhere?

This problem does not apply to other Internet radio sources as far as I
have tried.

Suggestions???

Re: [slim] Live365 - Login to hear favorite

2007-04-07 Thread peterw

This is a known problem that Andy is working on
http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=33892#4

I'm not sure, but I believe the best current workaround may be using a
web browser to log in to Live365.com and adding your favorite stations
to your Live365 "Presets" (use the green "+" button after searching for
a station).

Then you could play the station with the following:
Internet Radio -> Live365 -> My Presets -> [scroll to station name] -
Play

2007-04-07 Thread penda

They have not got a clue have they! Today I was thumbing through the
latest Hi_FI News in a newsagent, they have a home feature & this guy
has some good AV & HI stuff. He also uses 2 squeezeboxes plus
softsqueeze. There are closeup pics of his speakers, PC, NAS, Turntable
and Theta processor. You can just make out the squeezebox (if you know
what to look for) in a long shot of one of his racks. Very poor
considering it's his main source of music!

Personally I enjoyed last years "41" products better. 'Twas also the day
Slashdot went mad and "omg ponies" joined geek culture. Slimdevices
should do product announcements that day too. I know there has been at
least one 'product' announcement before.

Did Slim offer this during the open house (which I missed, sadly)?

Or is the next incarnation of hardware going to be so radically
different that the question is moot?

Any predictions?

[slim] Digital Output Issue

2007-04-07 Thread LambMN

I have a Squeezebox 3 and I am trying to run the digital coax output
into an external DAC. I do this and the DAC only detects a 32khz
sample rate, not a 44.1khz sample rate as I would expect. I know the
DAC does 44.1, as when I hook up a CD player that works fine. It is an
older DAC, but I would expect it still to work on 44.1 with the SB.
Anyone have any experience with anything like this?

Thanks.

No, there were no transporter specials at the open house.

What new incarnation of the hardware.. Slimdevices doesn't announce
products before they're done.. well, almost never.

Just buy the transporter, you know you want it. :)

[slim] Newbie - Help with MySQL

2007-04-07 Thread gbonawitz

I'm trying to use a local copy of MySQL to store all the DB information.
I have followed the instructions from one of the articles on the Wiki,
and Slimserver will see my personal MySQL and run while the default
Slimserver DB is shut down.

Here's my problem - when I do a scan, I only get maybe 5% of my actual
library into the MySQL DB. With the default Slimserver database, it
would scan in 100%.

Any suggestions as to what I should look into?

Thanks

Re: [slim] Amplifier that SqueezeBox can turn on?

2007-04-07 Thread sleepysurf

I'm using a Russound RS235LS, 35W (~$180), powering in-ceiling speakers
in my bedroom. It has a sensitivity switch to control the auto-sensing
power, and works perfectly with a Squeezebox. Further, I have it
mounted inconspicuously on the BACK of my dresser.

Re: [slim] IR Emitter Question

2007-04-07 Thread theta

I used WinLirc software to learn my YAMAHA YSP-800, I rename it to
ysp800.conf and then put it under /mnt/slimserver/Plugin/IRBlaster/ , I
re-start slimserver, I only saw IR-Blaster checkbox is checked in the
http://ip:9000\home\server settings\plugins\, I still cannot see IR
Blaster web page http://www.gwendesign.com/slimserver/dev_hard_and_software.htm#irblaster>,
could someone advise how to show IR Blaster web page?

I use slimserver 6.3, Linkstation HG-300 ppc, Debian linux.

Thanks

Re: [slim] Digital Output Issue

There is no way that the DAC is actually running at 32KHz. The question
is why is it _displaying_ that sample rate. I don't know... I am sure
that we report our sample rate correctly.

[slim] SqueezeBox Testing (beyond the "DTS" test)

2007-04-07 Thread mswlogo

I finally have proven to myself “Bits are Bits” and the SqueezeBox 3 (no
mods) transmits every last one of them. I was discouraged to hear folks
talking about Linear vs Switching power supplies, changing caps and who
knows what else. The standard SqueezeBox 3 transmits (over SPDIF)
perfectly. What really got me was the Coax vs TosLink debate. I have,
as many of you have, had done a sanity check with a DTS CD. But some
folks argue that DTS may have error correction (or recovery to smooth
over errors) even if the pipeline isn’t perfect. So it wasn’t proof
enough for some.

To test I generated a simple 200 Hz sine at max amplitude in MatLab.
Then sampled this at 44.1Khz for exactly 2 seconds and saved it to wave
file. I did this because it was important I knew exactly when it started
and ended. I then “played” this on the SqueezeBox 3. The simple max
amplitude sine wave does not have to be any more complex. It measured
the full dynamic range and a good many levels in between (441). The
hardware does not care what order the data is (i.e. how many
simultaneous frequencies) the DACs, crossovers and speakers worry about
that. I could just as easily used complex music. But I would have had to
add markers to help line things up for comparing. I may do this in the
future for grins. I chose 200 Hz so I could hear it on my PC speaker
working in MatLab.

Recording this was a bit of chore. I went through 5 USB SPDIF
input/output devices (2 of them twice) before I was happy. Folks at
guitar center hate me. I tried a Fast Track Pro, EMU 0404 and Audigy 2
PCMCIA, Fast Track Pro again and finally the EMU 0404 again. You must
use ASIO (or similar) drivers to get data “bit perfectly” in and out of
the PC.

What was nice with the EMU is it came with tons of software including
WaveLab Lite which was the perfect tool for this. Most ASIO software
are multi-track Recorder/Mixers that don’t mind resampling or
normalizing. The folks that sell WaveLab invented ASIO. To test the
softer I actually managed to loop a DTS Track through SqueezeBox 3,
into EMU 0404, into WaveLab (in monitor mode) back out the EMU 0404 and
into the Meridian. Without skipping a beat. I could record the stream at
will and then play it back. I needed this base line before looking at
bits in the MatLab generated waveform.

Then I finally recorded my MatLab waveform out of the squeezebox and
saved it to disk. Question was, was it bit for bit, sample for sample
the same. I had to edit the recorded waveform down to the exact samples
I started with. This was tedious but fairly easy to confirm and do in
WaveLab. Then I read it back in MatLab and plotted the difference
between the two vectors. And they were ZERO. In fact the files were so
close (even the headers) I was able to diff then with FC/b in Windows
(FileCompare in Binary).

For grins and I’m sure this has been done before. I burned the waveform
and ripped it to see if anything was lost there as well. Header were
different and I could not diff them with FC. So I used MatLab and they
were the same.

So if you’re hooked up with SPDIF you can do no more perfectly than a
standard squeezebox 3. If you want 24/96 or need good analog then you
may consider mods or a transporter.

Oh yeah I recorded off the Coax.

Re: [slim] SqueezeBox Testing (beyond the "DTS" test)

2007-04-07 Thread ceejay

Hi

hope you enjoyed your testing! And yes, bits are bits. However, you
should be aware that (IMHO) you haven't proved very much, at least that
is relevant to the debates that spring up from time to time.

The main problem is that you were sending the bits into a data capture
device, which if course did precisely what it was meant to do. You
were *NOT* playing it into a device that was trying to catch the bits
and then feed a DAC, which is how these things are really used.

Basically, in your testing you've eliminated the effect of jitter,
which is (alleged by some to be) the cause of real-life sonic
differences.

Yuo have therefore, unfortunately, proved nothing - if you are using a
downstream DAC which is prone to jitter (which all of them are to
varying extents) then you may well have differing results from an SB vs
a Transporter, or via Coax or Optical, or with different cables

All IMHO, of course.

Looks interesting. Am I correct that you can also connect a TV set to it
and it will switch to whatever source (SB/TV) is supplying audio at that
time?

And the sensitivity is such that it won't turn off the amp if you're
playing music at a low volume?

Regards,
Peter
