Re: [slim] Broken on Mac OS X 10.4.9
I bought a brand new Mac Pro a few weeks ago. It had 10.4.8 I updated this to 10.4.9 and then installed slim server 6.5.2 and when I manually start the server, it stops itself after 1-2 seconds. Slim Devices, what is an ordinary (non PERL wizard) supposed to do to get the software running? I have had my SB1 for several years and greatly miss the tunes. [slim] SB3 and Wake On Lan?
Hi everyone. I am planning to buy a Squeezebox of some description fairly soon - either an SB+ or an SB3 first (to try it all out before I commit myself to the price of an SB+). Anyway, before I order anything I am keen to get the software in place and have installed Ubuntu 6.10 onto a Shuttle XPC that I have (an SN45G V3 - link: http://eu.shuttle.com/en/desktopdefault.aspx/tabid-546/169_read-10008/) This appears to be working and I am able to serve music via the static local IP I have assigned, so that it responds on 10.0.0.27:9000 as it should. That's fine (as far as I can tell) but what isn't is that I want to use Wake On Lan with this machine. I can get it to sleep and can rsume via the power button, but can't get it to wake on a lan request. I have read somewhere that the NForce chipset actually reverses the MAC address, and was therefore wondering if the SB gives you the option to specify a MAC address (rather than static IP) to which it will connect for the purposes of waking the server? If it only uses IP, and the machine fails to wake on a standard IP, how do I set it to wake the Shuttle machine from the SB itself? I'm fairly new to Ubuntu and to the Slimserver system, so any help would be much appreciated... john -- jtc jtc's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=11230 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=34599 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

Sorry, I just couldn't keep away from this thread.. Just came across this little gem - http://www.lewishometheatre.co.uk/ Click on the MC Series Media Centers tab at the top and choose the Multiroom option. Is that a Gladiator DVD next to their unit? Surely they're not suggesting that you can store your pre-recorded DVDs on there?! Also, check out the DVD Catalogue system in detail section near the bottom of the page. If you also choose the MS Series option you'll note that you can store up to 300 HD DVDs on their unit. Impressive. Re: [slim] Is there a lawyer in the house?
They just want to restrict everything including DVDs. For me, I have invested a huge amount of money in the record industry, I have a stack of LPs which I can't play on my squeezebox, I have paid for that music once and record companies would expect me to buy it again to listen to it how I want to. I don't think there is much wrong in copying a few CDs here and there. They (the record companies) expect you to pay 10 quid for a CD you might not even like, they don't give you a free trial. They release clips to make you think its good and then you find its 80% filler. So I buy the CDs I really want, and copy the ones I might listen to a couple of times. If I like it, I'll probably end up buying more CDs by the same artist in time. -- Seineseeker Seineseeker's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=4591 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=34366 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

On a very similar note, on XP SP2, I can't seem to have my SB2 wake the server up. Actually... the server never goes to sleep. Re: [slim] SB3 and Wake On Lan?
I do have it enabled in the bios - but maybe you'd be so kind as to post your actual bios settings here - I am wondering whether something else has 'conflicted'. What's interesting to me is that this machine had been running a (slightly flakey) installation of XP SP2 before I decided I'd had enough and scrubbed it. However, WOL+Slimserver worked (albeit using SoftSqueeze from a Mac). So I wonder if it's an Ubuntu config thing. Are you on Ubuntu? I've done my fair share of google searches to find answers, and as far as I can tell I have the WOL set properly (using -sudo ethtool -s eth0 wol g-) and -sudo ethtool eth0- shows both the WOL settings as 'g' which I reckon is correct. Other than that, I'm a bit perplexed. When the machine is sleeping, I can see that the motherboard has some power - there are some lights on - and the network connection is 'active' insofar as I can see that there's continuity on my router and the little NIC lights are on. It's just that Ubuntu fails to wake up. For that matter, it also doesn't wake on anything other than pressing the power button. Hm... anyone? Bit of good news, though: just ordered an SB3 wireless. My longer term plan is an SB+ or perhaps a modified Behringer DEQ2496 if I can get everything working well with the common-or-garden SB3... -- jtc jtc's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=11230 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=34599 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

[slim] Managing compilations...?
Hi. I'm new to SliMServer and such, and I have copied some folders filled with individual tracks from various artists. How can I prevent individual 'one-off' tracks from obscure artists from bloating out my Artists view? I would rather have artists whose contributions are less than (say) 5 songs -not- appear in the Artists view. Is there a way to do this? Also, is there a nice easy way to manage the tagging and what-not? I am guessing that I might archive a lot of my vinyl over time and will need to add tagging. Third recommendation for DD-WRT. v23 SP2. But...what you're seeing shouldn't be happening even with the Linksys firmware. The GL version has twice the RAM the G versions do. It should not be running out of resources. All I can say, though, is that I've never had any problems with DD-WRT on my WRT54Gv4 (essentially a GL 1.0). I had the Linksys firmware on it for about 36 hours. :-) -- Mark Lanctot Mark Lanctot's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=2071 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=34608 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

Re: [slim] Slimserver on a wii ...
Hi, This is awesome. But I don't see how to access my Plugins on either Touch or Nokia770. I use mainly SQL or Dynamic Playlists and with either of these skins I couldn't access those features. I switched to a customized version the handheld skin (which I use on my HTC 8125), this worked, but does not look nearly as cool. I think I would use this most when guests were over for the WOW factor. Other than that, hey, I start a playlist and walk away. But again, WAY COOL! Thanks in advance for help with the Touch or Nokia770 Plugins question. -- caldvd caldvd's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=7302 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=31252 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

Recently the browse folder option shows the complete URL for each directory. It used to be the directory name only. I hope someone can tell me how to change this back, since the URL name is too long for the Squeezebox display. Re: [slim] Managing compilations...?
You could create artificial compilation albums out of the individual tracks and then set group compilation albums together. That way the album would appear under Various Artists. This should work if you have the tracks all tagged. If you have SS guessing tags then I'm not so sure. I think this makes four recommendations now for DD-WRT. Haven't used it on your exact model of router, but my Buffalo router was very flaky with the stock firmware, and DD-WRT made it very solid. Re: [slim] M4A format
To get more debug info from socketwrapper to see if socketwrapper is working - I have created a debug version of slim.exe for 6.5.2 of about 2 wks ago and a debug version of socketwrapper. To use debug versions. You can download special builds of a 6.5.2 slim.exe and socketwrapper. Unzip into a temporary directory. http://homepage.eircom.net/~altondsl/slim/socketwrapper013.zip http://homepage.eircom.net/~altondsl/slim/slim652debug.zip 1. Stop slimserver and stop slimtray 2. Backup slim.exe and socketwrapper.exe in case you want to revert afterwards. 3. Replace slim.exe and socketwrapper.exe by the debug versions downloaded. 4. open a cmd window - change layout to 250 wide by 1000 long. 5. cd to slimserver server directory 6. run slim.exe 7. from web interface - open debug window, enable d_source 8. make sure repeat is Off. 9. play one m4a track. 10. After it plays or wait for 2 mins if it doesn't - stop slim.exe, copy cmd window log to a file and post. -- bpa bpa's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=1806 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=34612 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss
Re: [slim] Can SB3's output be set to mono?
With reassurances from Logitech support that it would not harm my SB3 (though they warned it might damage my other gear), I've used an RCA Y adapter to merge my L and R analog outs to one mono RCA output. This feeds a normal mini-stereo, but with only one speaker attached to the amp output. If you want to be more cautious, common opinion (not commented on by Logitech support, nor any of the Slim/Logitech employees who frequent these forums, unfortunately) seems to be that a stereo-to-mono cable ought to include some resistors, too (the $5 Chinese-made Radio Shack adapter I use is a straight cable, no resistors**). http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=33899 I had considered opening a firmware feature enhancement ticket -- since the decoding is done in software (SlimDSP), the SB3 should be able to output identical summed mono on both the L and R outputs pretty easily. But I wasn't sure how widespread this desire was -- how many of us have single-speaker, Tivoli-like installations because sometimes they make more sense. -Peter ** after my how to build post, I bought a new adapter. Unlike my old one, this new adapter tests as a straight 0-ohm wire. -- peterw http://www.tux.org/~peterw/ free plugins: http://www.tux.org/~peterw/#slim BlankSaver BottleRocket FuzzyTime SaverSwitcher SleepFade StatusFirst VolumeLock peterw's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=2107 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=34613 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss
Re: [slim] SB3 and Wake On Lan?
jtc;196005 Wrote: I have read somewhere that the NForce chipset actually reverses the MAC address, and was therefore wondering if the SB gives you the option to specify a MAC address (rather than static IP) to which it will connect for the purposes of waking the server? If it only uses IP, and the machine fails to wake on a standard IP, how do I set it to wake the Shuttle machine from the SB itself? The Squeezebox will send a WOL packet containing the MAC address it associates with the Slimserver host. This causes problems for users who have networking gear that prevents the Squeezebox from seeing the Slimserver host's real MAC address (the Squeezebox will send a WOL packet that the Slimserver host's NIC would ignore because the contents are wrong). A feature enhancement request has been filed, but I have no idea what its chances are of being implemented: http://bugs.slimdevices.com/show_bug.cgi?id=4664 If there's some bug in the NForce chipset that makes it insist on WOL packet contents that don't match the MAC address it uses, then you may be in trouble regardless of your network design. (You might be able to alter the Ubuntu startup scripts so that the 'ifconfig' tool would change the MAC address of your NIC to what WOL needs when Ubuntu boots, and, to be more cautious, in case the NIC remembers this once the OS is down and the PC is off, change it back in the shutdown routine, after downing the ethernet interface.) -Peter -- peterw http://www.tux.org/~peterw/ free plugins: http://www.tux.org/~peterw/#slim BlankSaver BottleRocket FuzzyTime SaverSwitcher SleepFade StatusFirst VolumeLock peterw's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=2107 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=34599 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

Can someone recommend a widely available router in Europe which works well with the Squeezebox ? Re: [slim] M4A format
That log showed that socketwrapper is waiting for data from the mov123 program but nothing is being sent so problem is either mov123 or comms between mov123 and socketwrapper. mov123 depends Quicktime libraries - do you have Quicktime installed ? If Quicktime is installed then you could try using mplayer instead of mov123. A. If you haven't got mplayer already installed (e.g. as part of AlienBBC) Download, unzip and install mplayer.exe in the same directory as mov123.exe. The link below is for more recent build 1.0rc1 than in AlienBBC. Don't forget to make mplayer a trusted app. http://homepage.eircom.net/~altondsl/slim/mplayerrc1exe.ZIP After installing mplayer. open a cmd box and try running mplayer and make sure you get a banner. B. Download, unzip and install custom-convert.conf in the same directory (i.e. server) as convert.conf. http://homepage.eircom.net/~altondsl/slim/custom-convert.zip This should override the use of mov123 for m4a files and make mplayer the preferred app. C. Restart Slimserver and check that there are 4 Apple entries in Filetypes - mov123 handles AIFF - mplayer will handler and be checked for Apple WAV, FLAC and possibly MP3 D. Try an m4a file and if there is a problem - post the log. -- bpa bpa's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=1806 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=34612 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

One point that people *may* have missed. There is a SlimServer folder in the Caches folder. [slim] Recommendation for bedroom setup?
I'm looking to expand my squeeze network with a 2nd SB in the bedroom. I'm sure this is something that has been covered before many times, so maybe just a pointer to a FAQ somewhere would be helpful (I poked around but couldn't find anything.) All I'm looking for is a recommendation for a reasonable, low-profile amp speaker setup to hook the SB up to. The *only* thing it will be used for is the SB, it will never be used for CD or even radio playback, so I don't need anything but audio in from the SB (digital or analog), speaker out, a power button, and maybe a volume knob. Literally just something to plug the SB into to get some decent room-filling sound coming out of 2 speakers. It doesn't have to be audiophile quality because it won't be used for critical listening, but I don't want a cheap POS either. It's hard to find the right solution because most products today are loaded with all sorts of features that I don't need...and I hate paying for stuff that I don't need. Budget is...say $300-$500 (not counting the SB). I'd really like to use the alarm clock feature with this setup. Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated! -- ObjetDart ObjetDart's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=808 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=34621 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

Re: [slim] Recommendation for bedroom setup?
For those kind of settings one appealing way to go is to forget the amp and go with active speakers. Two models that routinely get high praise around here are Aego and Audioengine. I forget the specific model numbers, but search the forums for those names and you'll find the details. Both are well within your budget. Or if you'd rather go with passive speakers, look at one of the T-Amps, like the Sonic T-amp, or another whose name escapes me right now. I can usually get it to start and work for around ten seconds, just enough to get some music playing, but then the interface becomes totally unresponsive and the display becomes corrupted and unreadable. The icon I use to start softsqueeze says it is version 3.3, though I can't find About Softsqueeze screen like most windows programs have where I could get an exact version number. When I go to the Softsqueeze website, it says Download Version 2 now! so I guess I have a version more recent than is available on the softsqueeze site? I have started to use winamp to stream music from slimserver to my computer, but I would prefer to use softsqueeze if I can because there is no noticible buffer delay. Is anyone else having these problems? Is there a newer version I can get to correct them? -- NWP NWP's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=3730 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=34625 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss
Re: [slim] Warning, new firmware killed Squeezebox 2
Interesting. I received an email from Logitech Support today, telling me they received my SB2, tested it, and it is working perfectly for them! Now, I *KNOW* my unit appeared dead, and was totally unresponsive to EVERY resuscitative measure I took. Further, my other two remaining Squeezeboxes kept getting into the endless Factory Reset loop until I d/l Slimserver 6.5.2 I suspect the Logitech/Slim tech folks are using 6.5.2 as well, and that version somehow resuscitated my SB2. Weird! Anyways, the GOOD NEWS is that Logitech Support seems to be just as Customer oriented as the Slim folks were, and I will soon have my beloved SB2 back in my system! I hope everybody else facing this, or similar issues, has such a favorable outcome. -- sleepysurf squeezebox2 (with elpac linear psu) benchmark dac1 modwright swl 9.0se belles 350a reference ml summits. blue jeans cables. sleepysurf's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=14 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=34275 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

Re: [slim] Softsqueeze is very buggy. Is there a new version?
For Windows, I initially tried softsqueeze_windows_with_jre_3_3.exe. This failed miserably with problems as described above, so I installed jre1.5.0_11 from Sun's website, and installed softsqueeze_windows_3_3.exe. I then added javamp3-1_0.exe (the java mp3 plugin) as recommended by softsqueeze On OSX I think I have java 1.5 installed; I'll check later on (it's not on this computer and I need to go do some real life stuff) -- bukharin bukharin's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=10859 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=34625 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

Re: [slim] Problem with a Linksys WRT54GL...Best firmware
I'm a little late here, but since nobody mentioned it and I think its fantastic, I must recommend openWRT. May require a little more linux knowledge if you want to do anything fancy, but is a super clean implementation. DD-WRT is more gui-user friendly. Do they care how it works or how it is set up? Or would they rather use their iPod and iTunes off their computer? I am the proud, if somewhat cash-trapped, father of three kids, two of whom are teenagers. My 18-year old son uses SoftSqueeze on his PC to listen to Pandora and Rhapsody Direct. When his buddies are over, they'll happily do the same with the Squeezebox in the family room/home theatre. He's not a techie at all (his preference runs to football, lacrosse, and blondes). He'll just take the computer/SoftSqueeze setup off to college in the Fall. My 16-yr old daughter, when she's not sulking in her room with headphones on, will listen to the local country music radio station streamed via her computer. She's got no interest at all in the Squeezebox, which is good because her taste in music isn't shared with the rest of the family. The 5-year old is a gearhead-in-training. He's got using Harmony remotes down cold, and would be fine with the SB3 if he could read! He's always asking how things work, so I have a feeling he'll be the one most into the whole setup. My wife loves the SB3 and wants one in every room. I'm not installing speakers/amps every where, so she's out of luck.
