Re: [slim] Shipping to United Kingdom
I have bought 1 SB3 directly from SD in the US and one from Ebuyer very recently. The one from the US was very expensive in comparison. You pay VAT not only on the SB3 but the delivery also. SD use Fed Ex to deliver and they always collect the Tax. Not only that some has to be in to collect it. Can't remember the exact figured but it was over £215 But, it was a lovely all black one! I bought my second from Ebuyer for £190 inc delivery (when for the cheap skate free delivery), however is was a black with the silver bottom half, but was a UK spec power supply. You pays yer money and takes yer choice. [slim] Random Playing
My 2 SB's have been great for approx 6 months, no real problems, or problems can be sorted out by referring to the forum. However, just this weekend when I browse for song artist or album, eveything comes up fine and once chosen I can scroll through the album and everything is in correct order. But when I press play, the songs play in a random order. I am aware that this can happen if you browse the music folder, but this now happens when browsing artists and albums. Hi, For the record, over the last year I have bought separately an SB3, Qnap TS101 and back-lit remote for these, and the service has been excellent, both for pre-sales and support. Jon Nelson at Ripcaster even rang me at home to clarify one point about the Qnap! I have seen a couple of other postive comments here too. All kit is running problem free and always has - the secret is to get a setup that works, and then leave it alone, if you want close to consumer electronics reliability. If you want to fiddle, then fair enough but expect some challenges. My setup is QNAPTS101 1.2.1 0822T/Slimserver 6.3.1/SB3/Stello DA100 through Monster Coax/Arcam Delta 90/BW CM1s + Linn Axis/Akito/K18II for Vinyl. Another thumbs up for Advanced MP3 Players. Might be a little more but the service is great. As said, importing is likely not much better if you get hit by vat/duty. There's a very slim chance you might get away with it but I doubt it with a product like that. Also will Amazon.com ship electronics to the UK anyway? I know stuff like software they refuse to ship here. I thought the same was true of electronics. Another point is you'll get a US adapter with it and you might find the warranty isn't valid in the UK. -- deadkenny deadkenny's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=6722 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=34637 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

I've mentioned it several times before: Slim are great at the slim client, but they need to sell the server option too. How about a fully-configured NAS machine with a CD-ROM drive and a Mac/Windows installer that sorts everything out for you (anyone with Linux would probably be happy to do it themselves!) - detects the NAS, configures its SlimServer for your network etc. Also, some way to configure the SB3 for your wireless network (once you have got the above installation sorted) by plugging it in wired and sending the info would be nice - rather than having to enter a megadigit key! (Not sure if this is possible though) I think the form factor/quality/price balance of the SB3 is great, but it does need a geek. jmschnur;196501 Wrote: Is 6.5.1 compatible with Beta 2 of Windows Home Server. If so how does one install on the WHS platform? I will put off instaling for a while under I hear some user feedback. __ Joel Hi, I installed 6.5.1 on the latest Windows Home Server Beta (I joined the Beta this weekend). Slimserver installs exactly the same way as on XP. The features seem to be exactly the same, apart from the ability to automatically start at system start (vs. at login) - though maybe this option already existetd earlier, and I simply never have noticed it. So far no problems, but also no real reason to use Home Server as compared to normal XP (from a Slimserver perspective, that is). Compared to a Linux installation (I set up Slimserver on Ubuntu 6.04 Server a few weeks ago), setting up Slimserver on Windows Home Server is a lot easier (don't need to worry about Samba settings, UTF-8 vs. ISO-settings, configuring the firewall correctly, etc.), i.e., the total process of installing Windows Home Server and Slimserver up and running took me approximately 1,5 hours. Performance seems to be not quite as good, at least Slimserver's web interface seems less snappy. I haven't made up my mind yet whether I will continue to use Windows Home Server (and eventually purchase it) or not. As stated, from a pure Slimserver perspective, it doesn't make sense to use it because it doesn't seem to have any advantage over XP. I need to play around more with the other features, although at the moment the main selling points seems the backup functionality. Re: [slim] Squeezebox and Slimserver can't find each other.
I switched my Squeezebox from wireless to wired operation, because I read in other threads, that many people had worked around flakiness with Squeezebox finding Slim Server by doing that. Alas, today, the first time I tried to use m Squeezebox after taking the latest Apple Security update, the Slim Server and the Squeezebox had trouble finding each other. This time around, I did NOT restart Slim Server. I DID get repeated, Waking up Slim Server; Contacting Slim Server; blank screen I DID run Softsqueeze 3.3, and have no trouble at all connecting to the server. I DID power cycle the Squeezebox. None of those activities seemed to affect whether I could make contact between the Squeezebox and the Slim Server. What worked this time? While it said, Waking up Slim Server I hit the left arrow key, and saw the message, that it was trying to connect to my server. (I confirmed that the IP address was right.) I hit the left and right arrows a few times. Suddenely the dim clock face indicative of Slim Server and Squeeze box finally finding each other manifested. Why didn't it remember that I'd ALREADY hit the On switch, and that the Squeezebox should NOT be in standby? At that point I hit the On switch, and all behaved as if all was well. I guess I'll have to enable debugging and fetch, install and run ethereal to try and watch what's happening. I have a reasonably simple network here, and my Replay TV and my desktop have no problem finding each other and transferring gigabyte-sized TV programs. I think somehow, when the Apple server reboots when Squeezebox is not expecting it, a problem ensues that the initial Aloha does not seem to reconcile, and which power cycling the Squeezebox also does not rememdy. I will continue to watch. Any further suggestions how to watch are most welcome. -- wcattey wcattey's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=7506 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=33878 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss
Re: [slim] Squeezebox and Slimserver can't find each other.
Interesting, that you have the problem with a wired connection. I had always assumed it was a wireless issue. I get the issue at times when my computer wakes from sleep, so it isn't actually a matter of rebooting. I solve the problem by pressing and holding the power button. This does one of two things (I'm not sure why it doesn't consistently just do one thing). It either immediately gives the message connecting to network and after a while provides the clock face that shows it connects or gives the Welcome to Squeezebox message followed by the to begin setup press Right message. At that point I press Up and then Right and it goes through the connection process ending with the clock. If you can work out exactly what is happening it would be a great service. It's only a small bug (since there is the easy work-around), but it is still annoying and it would be good to have it eliminated. -- danco danco's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=210 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=33878 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

This makes it difficult to always get the artwork in place before rescanning. Things are certainly not helped by the fact that in order to do this in retrospect one must to do a complete clear/rescan...aarghh. I'm not fussed about audio because i will be partnerring it with a new squeezebox courtesy of the seasonal sale. My preferred solution is to transport a computer display via CAT5 baluns and an FM modulator to the TV sets in the house. Then just play the video's on the computer (which itself is safely tucked away in the cellar). Anything you can play on the PC you can watch on the TV's. Then I use my Lirc plugin to control the whole setup with my SB remote. The software I use is MythTV on Linux. But the same kind of thing could be done with Windows MCE. [slim] SlimServer and Spyware Doctor
I'm a relatively new Transporter and Squeezebox owner and I've been having a slight problem with my SlimServer set up on my computer. The computer is a Dell Dimension 4600 running Windows XP, service pack 2 with all the latest security updates installed. Everything basically works fine as far as the SlimServer software goes other than I find that it doesn't play nicely with Spyware Doctor. When I have both Spyware Doctor and Slimserver running Spyware Doctor will slowly begin to eat up the computer's resources until the system slows to a crawl. So I just turn off Spyware Doctor when Slimserver is running. I did not have this problem with Spyware Doctor prior to installing and running the SlimServer software. Any help, suggestions or possible reasons and solutions would be most helpful and very much appreciated. [slim] Maximizing the network
Hi: I have a SB3 in my home, and a Linux Slimserver that is in my work. I can hear all king of files (mp3,ogg) always but no always flac or ALAC (uncompressed formats). I think this is due to the load of the network. I can only hear flac (or ALAC) by night or in the weekend...I have a 4Mbit network... The problem is that the flac is interrupted..and perhaps this could be solved getting larger chunks of the song. Is there any way to configure this in slimeserver or in the client? I just tried this with an SB3 and instance of softsqueeze as a proof of concept - it's a hoot. 1) Get to two SB'3 - We will call them Left and Right. 2) Consider Left the Master, and Right the Slave, so sync Right with Left using settings-synchronize 3) Use the web interface to set up the screensaver / now playing options etc - e.g. Left = Now playing info, Right = VU Meters 4) Disable the IR remote commands on Right via the web interface, so that only Left is controlled via the remote. Re: [slim] Debugging help re Vista m4a issue, please
Enoch Light: I converted all of my CDs to m4a and have bought very little from iTunes, so I haven't had a DRM issue. How are you playing your m4a's? Through Lame? BPA: Thanks again. I had to take a mental break from this exasperating problem for a week or two (my wife is ready to forbid me from ever upgrading to a new op system again), although I miss my music terribly! Here are the results of the latest tests. WMA files: With wmadec/flac and wmadec both enabled and wmadec/lame and Windows Media (built-in) both disabled, WMA files played instantaneously (with only the built-in enabled, WMA files played instantaneously). All files m4a, WMA, mp3 - play fine using SoftSqueeze. I verified that neither SoftSqueeze nor QuickTime were running in the system tray. I opened QuickTime, tried to play a .m4a file, and got either very long delays or complete program crashes. It really appears to me that my issue is directly related to issues with QuickTime running on Vista. As many users have been reporting in the Vista threads, they are having problems opening the web interface with 6.5.0 or 6.5.1 or 6.5.2. I started having those same problems, and no matter what I did, I could no longer get the web interface to work properly. So, I reinstalled 6.3.1, which was always the version that has worked best for me in XP. Using 6.3.1, I followed your instructions re mplayer and custom-convert.conf. First, I got a banner when I started mplayer from a cmd prompt. However, after closing and restarting slimserver and then checking File Types, mov123 was still listed for FLAC, wav, etc. I next opened the custom-convert.conf file and noted that you had listed the executable file as mplayer. However, the executable file is actually mplayerrc1. So, I next went into WordPad and changed mplayer to mplayerrc1 in custom-convert.conf. I closed and restarted SlimServer, and mov123 was still the default for FLAC, wav, etc., and I didnt have an option to select mplayerrc1. So next, deleted the custom-convert.conf file and opened convert.conf via WordPad. I simply changed the mov123 reference in FLAC to mplayerrc1. I restarted my p.c., reopened slimserver, check File Types, and mplayerrc1 was now in fact listed as the appropriate decoder. I found what happened next to be very interesting: When I tried to play a m4a song by selecting the m4a song from the Squeezeboxs remote in my living room, the song began playing instantaneously on my p.c. in my den by mplayer. However, the song did not play on the Squeezebox; after about 20 seconds the Squeezebox simply emited a very high pitched whine (I was able to duplicate this scenario multiple times). Although the Squeezebox didnt work, I found this encouraging, as selecting a song from my remote did in fact cause an m4a file to play instantaneously, albeit not in the right place! Next, I noticed, though, that the text for mov flc in the custom-convert.conf file is quite a bit different than the applicable text in convert.conf. Therefore, thinking that it wasnt as simple as changing [mov123] to [mplayerrc1] in convert.conf, I replaced the mov flc text in convert.conf in its entirety with the mov flc text in custom-convert.conf. End result: Nothing played at all on the Squeezebox or the p.c.. Mplayer didnt start, nothing happened. Nevertheless, Im still encouraged. Do you have any thoughts or advice? Do you think it could be a simple matter of ensuring the mov flc code from mplayerrc1 is correct? -- Matt Shelton Matt Shelton's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=4983 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=34181 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss
