[slim] 6.5.1: Undefined string: SETUP_ALARMTIME

2007-06-20 Thread zulu

I'm getting this on 6.5.1 running on freebsd. I am seeing spotty alarm
functionality, for example, at times the alarms don't trigger. So I'm
assuming it could be related.

That message only complains about a missing string. Shouldn't happen, but
isn't critical. Anyway - I'd suggest you update to the latest 6.5.3
nightly and see whether it behaves better.

Well, you like to shoot your mouth off, don't you?

I find your remark about "mental deficiency" particularly offensive so
I would appreciate it if you could tone down your language.

As for Rockbox themes... some of them are pretty basic, yes, but in my
opinion many of them look fantastic - see
http://www.rockbox-themes.org/ (personally I use aZure v2 on my
Sansa).

The beauty of Rockbox is that you can easily create your own design so
feel free to create one that's up to your standard. If you can see past
what you consider to be a poor UI then you'll be rewarded with what is
probably the best functionality offered by DAP software.

[slim] Windows Home Server add-in?

2007-06-20 Thread groovyf

Tried searching, but seems it's broken...

Any plans for a SlimServer Add-In to the Windows Home Server Console?
I've tried and tested a SlimServer on a Beta of WHS and found it
installed and worked just fine. Then imagined how a nice front end that
hooked into the WHS Console would be a great addition.

As WHS is a designed to be out of the way with no kb/mouse/monitor
attached it's the ideal box for a SlimServer installation.

Maybe a 3rd party add-in might appear if not an official one.

Did you check all the files? I don't know, but would guess it's
possible for one of them to affect other files with the same artist.

Are they stored in directories in any kind of unusual way? Slimserver
guesses tags sometimes based on the folder name (but that shouldn't
make a difference here).

Do you use MusicIP?

I found it easier to set up SSH first, since one pipeline takes care
of all the ports - you don't have to worry about ISPs filtering
anything, and you only have one port to open in each firewall.
As Chris mentioned, OpenSSH is pretty good. Tunnelier is a great
client to use at the remote end - easy to set up, and good logging for
when things go wrong (and free):

The only thing about Hamachi is that you are using their servers as a

I've setup OpenSSH on Windows and found it to be very convenient to

One more thing: if you do go the SSH route, you might want to change
your default port, it'll help avoid people pounding on it all day
(although this may not bother you). In a default OpenSSH
installation, its in C:\Program Files\OpenSSH\etc\sshd_config.

Another point about using Tunellier: it gives you a nice, automated
way to get a remote desktop back to the server (assuming you're
running Windows), which I use a lot to do things like restart
SlimServer if it crashes, fix tags if I see them broken, etc.
And of course, like any SSH client, lets you point both SoftSqueeze
and your web browser at 127.0.0.1.

Thanks everyone for all the help. I closed all my ports and am using
Hamachi right now, and listening to my Slimserver with MediaMonkey. I
still can't seem to get Softsqueeze to work, but that's kind of moot
now as this works very well streaming at 320Kbps.

I understand the point about Hamachi being a weak point. If I really
want to avoid that and have myself totally covered, I can install a
hardware VPN between my sites. I already have that set up to other
remote locations, and already have the hardware to do it.

[slim] Sonos now available at Best Buy

2007-06-20 Thread MelonMonkey

For some reason I thought their product was already available in big-box
locations. Normally a dangerous venture due to rubber-band sales (ie.
many sales come right back to the store). Sonos might be able to
escape this without taking huge hits, but only for one very important
reason.

Polish. (That's "paw"-lish, not "po"-lish like in perogies)

Anyone that's been following the DAP and streamer market for the past
few years should know it's about the only thing they have above the
Squeezebox and a number of other solutions. This counts for a lot in
the consumer space and helps to make sure products aren't returned due
to things like customer frustration in setting them up.

I can't imagine Logitech having purchased Slim Devices if it didn't
intend, at some point, to move huge volumes of product to the consumer
channel.

When are we going to see a redeployed Slim Devices web site? More
importantly, a super-polished and no-brainer to set up version 7
software release? Eye candy in the form of a graphical controller
practically sells the Sonos solution on its own, so come on Logitech,
when's it coming...

Here's hoping that Logitech doesn't rely only on its superior
distribution channel to move product and that we continue to see
innovation and a move into a more graphically pleasant (and highly
usable) interfaces.

Re: [slim] Sonos now available at Best Buy

2007-06-20 Thread Mark Lanctot

I don't know, how successful will Sonos be in bog-box stores? Logislim
will be in more or less the same position.

It requires a knowledgeable sales staff, which big box stores don't
have. You have Joe Six-Pack going in, seeing the
Linksys/D-Link/Netgear "long audio cable" solution for $99, seeing
AppleTV for $299 (or whatever), then seeing Sonos at $899.

Since you indicate you're in Toronto - you must have seen Sonos pricing
in Canada. They will have a really hard time competing with the "long
audio cable"/remote soundcard solutions from all the networking
companies - Logitech will as well. Joe Six-Pack won't know any better,
all these devices allow for computer audio playback through his stereo,
right? If anything he'll think that AppleTV is the desired upgrade
because it can do video and because, well, it's from Apple - the iPod
folks.

Slim's intention before the Logitech takeover was to move into
higher-end chains with more knowledgeable sales staff and more
knowledgeable customers but this market segment isn't doing too well.
Logitech has the distribution capability and sales connections to
market it wherever they wish but at this point it's between big box
stores or direct. They might as well try the big box retailers but it
won't be easy.

I'm probably missing someting obvious, but isn't the SB always
connected to some sort of receiver/amplifier that will have a volume
control which would be more suitable to use ?

The volume control on my SB always stands at 100% and I control the
actual volume on the receiver instead.

It could of course be that you don't want to use several remote
controls (SB + Receiver remote), but other than that I can't really see
the purpose of a fast volume control on the SB itself.

That's the reason I use the SB remote volume on my living room system,
and I have two more scenarios for you: (2) the amp is so old it doesn't
have a remote (my basement system) and (3) the "amp" is a pair of active
speakers that are a pain to reach to adjust the volume on the speaker
(my kitchen system). And here's a variation on (3): I'll soon be
replacing the active speakers with in-ceiling speakers and an amp
tucked away out of sight (and out of IR range) in a cupboard.

I can definitely see your point about using the amp/receiver volume
control in many many circumstances, but one size definitely doesn't fit
all.

Guys,

Chill out on personal comments, _now_.

I think it's lost on a lot of people in the forums when they criticize
a plugin or such and say something like , "whoever developed that must
be a retard"...

A. Many of those developers are actually forum members, and they tend
to take such comments PERSONALLY

B. Most of this software is provided for free, and done in their spare
time... did I mention that most of them are free?

So, please feel free to criticize, but PLEASE do so in a way that does
not involve personal attacks on the developers.

Play nice kids!

Am I alone?

There's no way in hell I'm paying 500$ for that. Anyway, I haven't

[slim] Fluorescent light bulb freaks out Squeezebox

2007-06-20 Thread sokratess

Stupid me trying to save a little energy!

Recently I switched the lighting in the room where my SqueezeBox 2 sits
from incandescent to compact fluorescent bulbs. Unfortunately this
totally freaks out my Squeezebox when I am using the remote control.

When I press a button on the remote the SB either does nothing at all,
does what it is supposed to do or (most of the time) repeats the
desired command indefinitely.
Rather annoying if you want to turn up the value juuust a notch and end
up running to the stereo to shut it off because the volume on the SB
went straight up all the way to 100.

Has anybody of you experienced the same issue?
Is there any way to circumvent this (aside from switching back to
incandescent of course)?

[slim] a possible fix for a slim server pet peeve?

2007-06-20 Thread Super-Gonzo

Let me start by saying this isn't a flame... I'm a huge fan of the
product.

However, I have one minor gripe, that could perhaps be alleviated
rather easily. When first turning on the device and playing a song
after coming home in the evening, the squeezebox always freezes for
several seconds before beginning playback.

My assumption is that this is caused by the server spinning up the disk
to access the music file, after several hours of inactivity. If this
assumption is correct, perhaps a fix would be to do a dummy disk
read/write to the music folder on a seperate thread, when a squeezebox
is powered on or accessed for the first time in some predetermined
window?

By the time I've browsed through my library to find what I want to
play, the disk(s) will have had time to spin up, and playback will be
immediate.

Thoughts? Any ideas on some Perl that could be hacked together to try
this out?

It's probably that the CF is emitting enough IR to blind the sensor.
Fluorescent bulbs do emit considerable IR which is kind of

The problem seems to have sorted itself with a little user
intervention.

I unticked the 'automatically run at system start' in slimtray, then
re-ticked it.

On the next reboot, although the tray icon appeared, slimserver did not
start.

I then unticked/reticked the 'automatically run' option once again and
all is back to normal.

Perhaps something got a little corrupt somewhere?

I was in a US Best Buy store the other day and saw a Sonos unit. You
know, I was really disappointed by the remote control. First, the
buttons seemed cheaper than I imagined. Worse, the remote didn't seem
all that responsive. It felt sluggish. The user interface might be more
intuitive than the Squeezebox 2-line up/down/left/right menus, but I was
surprised that it didn't react more quickly to my button presses. It
felt a little like running the latest & greatest software on an old
computer. Not great. Add to that the fact that it's a completely closed
system, and I'm glad that I've sent my $ to Slim/Logitech.

Looks like this is indeed the problem. I found an explanation of the
effect here (Warning: PDF-Link):
http://www.neptunlight.com/files/IR-and-CFLs.pdf

They are also suggesting a couple of solutions:

Number 1 and 2 I had already employed anyway, so it looks like I either

Do you mean the folder containing your PSP skin? Try "C:\Program
Files\SlimServer\server\HTML\PSP", or whereever you installed
SlimServer followed by \server\HTML\PSP.

mp3 to mp3 transcoding, for cases where bitrate limiting is set and

Re: [slim] SS 6.5.2 - Missing Albums under Artist

2007-06-20 Thread bmacnaughton

I am running SlimServer V6.5.2 on a Windows machine. My music library is
not managed, except by SlimServer. I rip music with dBpoweramp music
converter directly into FLAC format and am pretty religious about
making sure COMPOSER tags are accurate.

The problem is that two CDs with the same name "Let It Be" (Beatles and
Replacements) doesn't work right.

In all cases the Album Art is from the Beatles "Let It Be", the title
is listed correctly ("Let It Be") and the Artist is listed "by The
Beatles, The Replacements".

If I am viewing via All Artists, i.e. visually browsing album art for
all artists, the merged album appears in the Various Artists section
and lists all the songs from both CDs. It doesn't appear in the Beatles
or Replacements sections.

If I choose the Beatles from the text list of albums, then Let It Be
shows up there with the correct songs (and correct Album Art, but
superfluous artist - the Replacements - as noted).

If I choose the Replacements from the text list of albums, then Let It
Be shows up with the correct songs, wrong album art, and superfluous
artist - the Beatles.

Physically the CDs are ripped to different directories with different
album art, artists, etc. The only thing that is the same is the CD
name.

Is 6.5.3 stable enough that it is worth a try? Any indications that it
might fix this issue?

Re: [slim] Fluorescent light bulb freaks out Squeezebox

2007-06-20 Thread Mark Lanctot

That's very interesting - it's not the quantity of IR (which is almost
certainly less than that of an incandescent bulb), it's the fact that
the IR is modulated at close to IR remote carrier frequencies.

Neat. But a PITA for you, sokratess!

Out of curiosity, what's the brand name?

I use Composer tags but have no problem with songs not being displayed.
The problem I see is that every composer is listed in the "by" part of
the CD description. For example, "Let It Be... Naked" by John Lennon,
Paul McCartney, George Harrison, The Beatles.

Any chance 6.5.3 fixes this too? Why are composer tags such a problem?

Re: [slim] Fluorescent light bulb freaks out Squeezebox

2007-06-20 Thread seanadams

The reason it does this is because of a heuristic in the firmware that
deliberately interprets "garbage" IR codes as the repeat command. The
reason we do this is so that if a user points the remote control away
from the sensor briefly while doing a press-and-hold, it still works as
a continued press and hold. Currently there is no option to disable this
behavior.

Often times the IR sensor can be triggered by older lighting systems
used in offices, which emit a high frequency flickering that triggers
the sensor. In those cases it can be fixed by installing new ballasts.
It's not so much an issue of the color of the light (its amount of IR
content) so much as the frequency (several KHz) of any flickering. Eg
sunlight has load of IR but won't cause a problem. This is the first
I've heard of it being a problem with compact fluorescent bulbs. Out of
curiosity do you have the make/model of the bulbs?

Have you checked if there is anything simple you can do to work around
the issue, such as putting the SB below a shelf, moving the light, etc?

[slim] Adding Favorites from Slim Server

2007-06-20 Thread ptorpey

Hi,

I am visually impaired and cannot easily use the remote for controlling
my Squeezebox.

Fortunately, the Slim Server software is readily accessible with my PC
screen reader and I can perform most functions from the PC.

One thing I have not been able to figure out how to do from Slim Server
is to add an Internet Radio station to my Favorites. Is this possible
from the PC?

Thanks.

Re: [slim] Having some problems ... Apple Mac (PowerPC)

2007-06-20 Thread bephillips

To make a symbolic link in Mac, download and install MakeSymlink:
http://www.naratt.com/MakeSymlink.html

This will add to contextual menus when you ctrl-click on files an
option to "make symbolic link". Then place this symbolic link in your
music folder. This is like an alias, but OS X aliases don't work in
slimserver, so you have to use symbolic links, which are a unix thing.

I think the problem with not all artists showing up is a known bug, try
a newer nitely version.

Why not run SlimServer on the ReadyNAS?

"Automatically run at login" is an option when right-clicking SlimTray,
the SlimServer icon in the task tray next to the clock in XP.

It's Windows thing and is done through SlimTray.

Why not just use a UNC path and allow SlimServer to run as a service?

Re: [slim] slim.exe has encountered a problem...

2007-06-20 Thread Brian Ritchie

I had this happen a few times as well. Usually soon after doing a
Windows Update.

First time (that I bothered to report the error, that is) I followed
the instructions on the link to install MS's suggested patch (and yes,
it did take two reboots before the message went away). All seemed
well.

After the next Windows Update, it happened again - and I got told to
install the same damn patch! I assumed that WU had trashed the patch,
so I went through the tedious thing again.

I've not seen it happen for a while. But in the meantime I've upgraded
to a more recent version of SS (sorry, no details of old/new versions to
hand right now), so maybe it was that that fixed it.

Re: [slim] Music hangs - Firmware rollback? Slimserver rollback?

2007-06-20 Thread 2eleven

I've been having this problem since I upgraded to 6.5.2. I do not need
to cycle power on the squeezebox to get it back though. I can simply
click the next song from the slimserver interface. It is very
annoying.

Slimserver is running on linux, music collection is flac.

Do let me know if you figure this one out. I'll probably end up
reverting back to 6.5.1 since I didn't have any real reason to upgrade
in the first place (except that I try to stay fairly current so I don't
get too far behind).

[slim] SB3 Pffft Sound!

2007-06-20 Thread PNCD

I am certain that this has come up before and someone can give me a
quick 'duuh' answer.
Running FLAC from SS 6.5.2 on Infrant to SB3 via WiFi with 'excellent'
reception.
On ALL tracks I get a pffft sound (almost a swishing or tearing) about
every 30 seconds. I have rescaned on the server, rebooted on the SB3
and made sure firmware is up-to-date. Digital output is fixed. Chain
is SB3-EMM DCC2SE-McIntosh 501. No problem with digital chain EMM
CDSDSE-EMM DCC2SE-McIntosh. Therefore assume issue is SB3/SS only.
Thanks for the help.

Question: When you listen to music, do you connect to Slim Server or
SqueezeNetwork?

- a) 100% of the time to Slimserver (on computer or NAS drive)
- b) 75% of the time on Slimserver / 25% on SqueezeNetwork
- c) 50% of the time on Slimserver / 50% on SqueezeNetwork
- d) 25% of the time on Slimserver / 75% on SqueezeNetwork
- e) 100 % of the time on SqueezeNetwork

I find that ripping/tagging is a slow process, but the more CDs I get on
my hard drive, the more I listen to SS. That's not to say that I don't
listen to a lot of internet radio too, but I do that mostly through SS,
not SqueezeNetwork.

Maybe if there were a way to synchronize the SN services, I'd use them
more.

Re: [slim] slim.exe has encountered a problem...

2007-06-20 Thread miguelk

This is happening to me constantly. I have to manually start Slimserver
each time I restart the computer. Very frustrating.

Re: [slim] Fluorescent light bulb freaks out Squeezebox

2007-06-20 Thread tyler_durden

CF lamps are not the great devices the manufacturers claim. They don't
put out the amount of light claimed, they don't last as long as
claimed, and they cause radio interference and apparently IR remote
control interference. They also contain mercury so disposing of them
is a problem.

Re: [slim] Question about convert.conf

2007-06-20 Thread tyler_durden

Convert.conf doesn't do anything. I edited a copy of it and saved it
and it had no effect. I then saved another copy as custom_convert.conf
which also did nothing despite what it says in the file. Conversion
choices in the slimserver settings page are saved to the
slimserver.pref file.

I have not figured out why the convert.conf file exists.

You need to shutdown slimserver to have it reload, but it sure does
something on my system, and it does on other people's as well... I
don't have conversion commands in my .pref

[slim] Fast forward/Rewind

2007-06-20 Thread thomsens

I'm sure it's been asked before, but is there any hope that the FF and
RW will be improved on the Transporter/SB? As far as I'm concerned
it's almost a broken implementation at this point. It's frustrating
because it's the only thing I miss about my CD player. I'm using
6.5.2.

it controls how the file types settings work and what commands are used
for transcoding.
if you edit it, you still need to restart the server for it to have an
effect.

I can assure you it works, as I have edits that are required for making
my setup work at home.

Re: [slim] Fast forward/Rewind

2007-06-20 Thread mswlogo

I totally agree but you can fix it.

One huge problem is, the Fast Forward and Rewind Buttons are double
mapped.

They are mapped to Next Track / Previous Track AND Fast Forward and
Rewind. Depending on how long and how many times you tap it.

You can remap these to different buttons.

Once seperated they work much better.

You do this by editing the Default.map file in the server\IR
directory.

Also you cannot have transcoding active and the format must be native
(e.g. FLAC) for fast forward to work.

It's still not as smooth and robust as a CD player but it's usable. As
shipped it's unusable in my opinion too.

The fix above also makes Next Track/Previous track more robust too. I
split them to the Volume Up down buttons because I use an external DAC.
Then on my Harmony remote I map them correctly to SEPERATE FF/RW Next
Track/Previous Track buttons.

Re: [slim] Auto Browse Artist

2007-06-20 Thread davep

Simple. Go into player settings and select the 'Menu' item. In the
page that opens you can select and deselect individual items to be
shown and the order in which they appear. You could add 'Artists' and
then move this up to the top of your menu list so that it will come up
as default when the SB is turned on.

Re: [slim] Why did my album art stop working properly?

2007-06-20 Thread Mike Anderson

Argh...

I tried dividing up my library into smaller pieces and scanning them in
separately to see if I could locate any problem files.

No luck. For any given piece, the artwork loads fine. It's only when I
try to scan the libary as a whole that causes me to lose the artwork.

Any advice, anybody?
