Re: [slim] Two SB3s, very different wireless "rates"?
SuperQ;213493 Wrote: > it makes perfect sense that you would get a much lower rate for the > second one. Could you please clarify what you mean by "the second one". I have three squeezeboxes and one of the three (closest to my access point at the far end of the house where five other neighbor's wireless lans are detected)loses its connectivity and reverts to its setup screen every other day or so, compared to my two other squeezeboxes which apparently get their signal from my wireless router, not the access point. Does having more than one squeezebox playing on the lan affect performance? Also I have four wireless security cameras all operating on the 2.4 gig frequency (which I assume is the same as the squeezeboxes). I have had to disconnect two of them so that my squeezeboxes can have stability. If all four cameras are broadcasting, I can't connect to the squeezenetwork from any squeezebox. When I have only two cameras operative, then the squeezeboxes work fine except for the third squeezebox as mentioned above. I have tried changing wireless channels, using a static ip address and also moving my third squeezebox around the room. No luck. It still reverts to the setup screen every other day. What prompted this reply is the comment by the previous poster about "the second one". Does anyone else have connectivity issues when multiple squeezeboxes are playing simultaneously? Should I disconnect all my cameras? I'd rather have music than security. Am I barking up the wrong tree? The cameras broadcast. The squeezeboxes receive. So maybe one thing has nothing to do with the other. If more than one squeezebox is receiving at the same time, does this suck the radiowaves out of the air so that there are no more for additional squeezeboxes? Does this make sense? Have my neighbors messed me up since five of them also have wifi networks? Any ideas? Any suggestions? Has anyone else ever had a squeezebox revert to the setup screen every other day and did you find a solution for this? -- mortslim mortslim's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=11039 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=36697 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

[slim] Problems with SlimServer 6.5.2
I am running SS6.5.2 released on Windows XP with all updates. I am seeing two problems. (1) I added new music in the last day or so, and lo and behold, I cannot find the music with SS. I can see it on the disk, and I can play it with Window Media Player, but SS doesn't even know it exists. I have cleaned and rescanned the entire library at least twice - no joy. I am now not sure that SS knew the artist was even there before, but of course don't have an easy way to go back and check. The artist is Emilylou Harris and I do not find even an entry for her if I look at artists, either under SS or under SoftSqueeze. Neither one will find her. (2) I am also seeing when I go to Browse on my SB3 that my computer name is coming up, i.e. COMPUTER:OWNER. When I check to see what this is, it tells me that "UPnP request failed, please check the UPnP server." Whatever this means. This happens both with SoftSqueeze and with my SB3. I have updated my firmware, I have reinstalled everything. No luck. Anyways, you do get the default album cover when you ask for a cover.jpg (well, at least with a web browser) using a track id tag that has no artwork associated with it. However, what appears to be a JPEG by name is really a PNG format image! Couldn't tell until I saved it and ran some tests on it. So, is this a bug in SlimServer? Why does SlimServer even use PNG files? Can we switch to a JPEG default image file? I don't believe there are any electronics in the distribution blocks - at least not the ones meant to be used with impedance matching volume controls. Like you say, they effect parrallel connections to the speakers, so if I'm not mistaken, using one is electrically equivalent to attaching two, three, four, or more sets of speaker cables directly to an amp's speaker terminals. Obviously that's physically difficult with so many cables, so there's the need for the distribution block. And as I mentioned, in the typical whole-house audio scheme the block would be located in a wiring panel, so becomes a permanent centralized distribution point to which you run your audio source. For a zone with just two rooms and an amp located nearby, you could probably just as easily connect two pairs of speaker cables to the amp using two sets of spades, spades on one set and bananas on the other, or using bare wires. -- JJZolx Jim JJZolx's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=10 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=36701 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

[slim] Album art - default behavior when there is no art...
Hi... Was wondering if I am going mad. Trying to create a slimserver client that pulls album art. When slimserver finds a "cover.jpg" file in the same directory as the MP3s it all works very well :-)! Re: [slim] iTunes Plus ?
I purchased an album from iTunes Plus about a week ago and got it working with my SB3 in short order. I simply copied the files from the laptop where I was running iTunes to the Slimserver music directory via Samba (my Slimserver is running on Linux). Since I hadn't previously streamed AAC files*, I also had to get mplayer working, which didn't take long (it was already installed; I just had to create custom-convert.conf with the appropriate entries). Sound quality seemed fine, although to my ears it lacked some of the range of my FLAC files. But to be fair, I'd probably need to compare the same music tracks in both formats to be sure that I could hear a difference. I'm not an audiophile by any means, though, so I'm not too worried about it. * In the past I played my iTunes purchases on my SB3 by "un-DRM'ing" them and converting to MP3 (Don't tell Steve Jobs, though. ;) ). -- AubreyCTurnerJr AubreyCTurnerJr's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=9795 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=36709 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

Re: [slim] Squeezebox Boombox
Well, regarding using such a thing in public, I wouldn't, but there are lots of (annoying!) people who do - at the beach, camping, in their front (not back) yards, and once even at the grocery store! Couldn't figure that one out. Would I buy one? Maybe not, but I could really see where they could be useful. Seen all the threads about self-powered speakers lately? Bet you could sell an SB boombox (can we call it the SBBB?) to them...it would save money over the SB3 + powered speaker bundle I'd bet. Do away with the digital and analog outs. If you need such a thing, get a Squeezebox. Keep the headphone output though, but use a muting circuit when plugged in. Use a Tripath-based chip amp for low power consumption, low cost, good sound quality and the coolness factor. Use drivers specially-matched to the amp chip, surely Logitech's computer speaker division can source or manufacture something appropriate. Sound quality isn't key here, but the sound quality should be decent with a Tripath or other digital amp and well-matched drivers. Perhaps add AM/FM radio? Power it by "C" cells, although one must ask how long they'd last given the Wi-Fi power demand - maybe a lithium ion permanent battery might be better, and it'd be a good selling feature. -- Mark Lanctot 'Sean Adams' Response-O-Matic checklist, patent pending!' I can't give a definitive answer, but since the Itunes Plus songs are 256kbps AAC with no DRM then they should play just fine on the SB. Yes, save that if you have actually opened up some ports on your router to the world at large by port forwarding, you may want to close 'em down sharpish. [slim] basic multi-room audio questions
Apologies upfront for this question that is not really SB specific, but after all the caption for this forum is "the kitchen sink" And I know that a lot of forum members have expertise in this area. We're doing some remodeling in the kitchen/dining area. While the walls and ceiling are open I want to put in 2 pairs of in-ceiling speakers, a volume control for each pair, an amp that turns on automatically when it senses an audio signal, and my existing SB3. The two pairs of speakers will be close enough that I don't need to entertain the idea of playing from different sources -- one SB will do just fine. That also means that I'm fine controlling everything with the SB's remote. I haven't decided on the speakers yet, but to make things easier I'm limiting the search to 8-ohm models. The amp will probably either be a Parasound Zamp or an AudioSource Amp 100. The user reviews indicate that the auto-sensing on the AudioSouce is less reliable than that on the Zamp. Another difference between the two amps is that the Zamp only has outputs for 1 pair of speakers, while the AudioSouce has outputs for 2 pairs. Now for the questions: 1) If I go with the AudioSource, is the wiring as simple as: A-spkr-output-->volume control-->A-spkrs and B-spkr-output-->volume control-->B-spkrs 2) If I go with the Zamp what's the best way of running the wires to the speakers? I don't need a speaker selector box, because the volume controls will suffice. Should I run the speaker outputs through a parallel connecting block, and then to the volume controls and the speakers, or is there a way to wire them in parallel directly? 3) If I'm only looking at 2 pairs of 8-ohm speakers, do I need to get impedance-matching volume controls? Does the answer depend on which amp I use? Many thanks in advance. When I restarted setup (without uninstalling) it then completed and now appears to be running but I can't get to it with a web browser. I am running Vista Ultimate on a Dell C521, tried to use 6.5.2 and 6.5.3 server software. I have tried it with ZoneAlarm and with Windows Firewall, all relevant ports are opened in TCP and UDP mode. Re: [slim] Verizon Westell Router -- Can't See Wired Server?
I wonder if there's a bit of confusion about terminology here which doesn't come across well in the wiki? The wiki entry (at least on my reading) is only talking about "port forwarding". I have never had port forwarding (i.e. opening up a port in my router to the internet) for those ports to make Slimserver work on my internal network (using Belkin and Netgear routers). I do have an exception for those ports in my firewall (have used a variety such as Zone Alarm, AVG and Windows Firewall), so that if my SB sends something internally to those ports the firewall knows to let it through on my internal network. As you say, it must be something about your particular set up, but my understanding is as the wiki - i.e. you will normally need to make an exception for those ports in any firewall which operates on your internal network, but don't need to open those ports up to the outside world on your router. -- Siduhe Siduhe's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=723 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=36594 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

Thank you all for your replies. I am going to start working through all of the options suggested over the next couple of days. I hadn't realised that there were so many options available. Scan got the unit this morning and have confirmed the fault, said they will raise a new invoice and send me a brand new unit towards the end of the week (which is a bit vague). Will the new unit be warrantied from this new invoice date or my original purchase date? Fingers crossed this one will be ok! Hmm, mixed feelings about this. I love last.fm but mainly for its tracking capabilities rather than its internet radio, although I use it now and again. Does the SB support last.fm radio? Re: [slim] Help - Artists disappearing from Artist list but their albums are still present!?
I'm having a similar problem. I added a new album the other day and have done several rescans (full). The album is there and I can browse to it, but searching for the artist gives me no match. When I tried browsing for artists the other day I could not find the artist in that list either. Not sure if this is related, but today when I tried browsing for artists I got a really weird thing. I pressed the right-arrow on the remote to browse artists and the screen scrolls like it should do, but then it scrolls back again to the browse artists screen. I'm on 6.5.2 (release version) SlimServer is running on Linux redhat 3. It seems that the fix is to upgrade to 6.5.3, but I'm a bit unsure about upgrading to a beta - can anyone vouch for the stability of 6.5.3 before I upgrade? -- AndyHennah AndyHennah's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=313 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=36346 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

A few of us have centered a complete music server around SlimCD. I use a small VIA-based fanless nano-ITX machine with SlimCD installed on a 1 GByte IDE flash card, with 256 mbytes of RAM. Attached via USB I have a 750 GByte HDD. In the attached photo, the HDD on the left is the Seagate 750 GByte drive, the nano-ITX machine is in the middle, and my Netgear wireless router is on the right. Anything making use of the server reaches it via the wireless router. The small device on the top of the server is a broadband cellphone data modem. It is connected to the server via USB, and it serves as a PPP connection to my cellphone carrier. It is active semi-permanently, and I have activated the Linux firewall in SlimCD, so it is also serving as an internet gateway for everything else I have, including when I connect my SB3 to Squeezenetwork, or surf the web with my wireless laptop. The whole thing is completely self contained and headless, and plugged into a cheap UPS - which has already been used successfully in a power failure:) I use putty/ssh for administration and smbfs to move newly ripped files to the HDD. I rip CDs on my wireless laptop. I have been running SlimCD on this hardware as my music server for a couple of months now without rebooting. I have had this SlimCD setup driving as many as 3 SB3s at once, with a different stream to each one - no sweat. I am very happy with this music server. -Ron +---+ |Filename: Music Server from front.jpg | |Download: http://forums.slimdevices.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=3038| +---+ -- Ron F. *Squeezebox setup:* wireless SB3 -> CI Audio VDA.2 DAC + VAC.1 PSU *Main rig:* NAD 7600 + NAD 2600A -> Phase Tech PC-6.5 speakers *Headphone rig:* Headroom Max -> Sennheiser 650s *Music Server:* Nano-ITX computer running SlimCD + 750 GByte HDD -> Netgear wireless router *Other stuff:* NAD C542 CDP, NAD 6300 Tape, Monster 5100 Power conditioner, Outlaw Audio cables Ron F.'s Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=5616 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=36538 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss
