Re: [slim] Running SS on an iMac - Problems
All wired right now until we determine the problem. Thanks for the reply and sorry about the double posting. I didnt realize that a post to the mailing list would also get posted to the forums. The client has a number of network issues as well, as I discovered tonight so will be trying to resolve these first. One strange behavior is that we can plug a Linux and Windows laptop into a particular 5 port Linksys switch and they connect fine and work fine internally and externally. Plug the iMac in and the light on the switch goes on, goes off, goes on, goes off etc so I am thinking a possible ip conflict since the Imac is staticly assigned. Will keep plugging away at it. I am having the same issue. I've placed cover.jpg in the appropriate folders but it isn't displayed in the album views. However, if you click on the album, the album art is displayed. This would appear to be an instance of Bug 5138: http://bugs.slimdevices.com/show_bug.cgi?id=5138. (although I'm running 6.5.1 instead of 6.5.2 in the bug, and I don't think it has anything to do with playlists in my case.) In my case it seems that only cover art that I've added recently is not showing up. Are there constraints on the size of album art? In my case the trouble files are generaly smaller than the typical Amazon file (say 150x150 rather than 300x300 or 500x500). I wouldn't think smaller would break it, but ... Thanks, NPR, for updating your header. I was going to put a pointer to this in WikiRadio - essentially to replace the existing (old) hand-crafted one that someone else made for it. MAC as in Media Access Control, not the PC made by Apple. One of the "layers" of Wireless security is to tell the router or access point, "only talk to these machines," identified by MAC address. It isn't much of a security measure since it is trivial to change the MAC address of a machine... That said, it is probably under Security Settings on your router, something like, "Only allow these clients to connect" or something. You can leave it on if your network is pretty constant (just remember to add new clients to that list when a friend brings over his laptop), or turn it off if it gets to be annoying: the security it gives is pretty minimal. -- snarlydwarf snarlydwarf's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=1179 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=37305 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

I would check whether he can connect to SqueezeNetwork. If he can't, it's an issue with the SB and router, perhaps just the wrong password; if he can it's something to do with the IMac and SlimServer. -- danco danco's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=210 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=37315 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

[slim] Logitech being absolutely OTT ?!
Hello, I wonder if the guys over at Logitech are being absolutely mad? Why? Because of pricing changes to the transporter over here in Europe / Germany... Prices are being constant $2000 for the US ONLY they don't ship to Europe anymore. Why? NO explanation just a link to Logitech.com. Where exactly the same unit is priced arround 2500 Euro! I don't have to tell you about currency exchange rates at the moment. I was planning to get a transporter as soon as I could afford it... That is to say a month ago I would have been able to purchase it over in the US and get it shipped to to my door and pay via credit card. That would have been arround 1500 Euro for exchange rates at the moment. Now Logitech one of the big players aquired slimdevices. Good choice would I think although their products are not quite mass market I guess. But Logitech has all the developements Sean Adams and his fellows have put so much work in. Being able to manufacture these units on a bigger basis perhaps maybe the prices would drop and with a big name on them the would eventually reach mass market in Europe... But the oposite is true. The funny thing about this is that with all the developement done the units shouldn't be to expensive to make. I think Slimdevices had their calculations and had areasonable chance to actually refund their developement. Why does logitech make such a difference amongst their customers now. Is it all about !SQUEEZING! the last bit of profit out of a company that was only aquired to disapear in Logithech's drawer's? Why should I just because I happen to live in Europe pay about 150% of the price every body in the US pays??? Anyway, it is your decision. The squeezebox REALLY makes music accessable for blind persons because CDs arn't easyly recognisable if you can't see the covers and the perspective of the possibility to browse a music collection by a web browser actually made me buy a decent hifi thinking to hook up a transporter. But I think you have actually lost a customer. :( I know it's just "take it or leave it" and I shouldn't kikc my can all over the place. But just notice that there might be other potential european customers who arn't too happy. And well, "We will rock you!" But you don't care anyway? To often are good ideas bought ONLY to be thrown into the bin. But perhaps there is an explanation? Perhaps it's just European power suplys that are out of stock? :o -- jaysung jaysung's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=12375 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=37308 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

The choices are gateway and router? That is an odd selection. A Gateway is a "where packets that are not local to this network should be sent". Also called a "default route"... A router is "a device that knows how to get to 2 or more networks and makes decisions on where to send packets based on its knowlede of those networks." In most cases, the gateway -is- a router... what good is passing packets onto a supposedly more net-knowledgeable machine if it doesn't know what to do with them... My squeezebox can access SN through the router, but just times out when I try to access SS? the windows firewall is obviously the same as before, allows through stuff to 9000 and 3483, in the router I hava mac address filtering, but that is obviously fine as it can access SN, I have WPA but again must be fine as SN is accessable, so can only be the router firewall? to be honest I can't find how to turn the firewall off, its a linksys router, in port range forwarding I have forwarded 9000 and 3483 to the computers ip, is this right to do? can't think of what else i'm missin? any help would be great! -- Gibbo Gibbo's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=12331 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=37305 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss
Re: [slim] Wireless Strength - Help!
I second the use of homeplugs. I had connectivity issues, dropouts, etc. However, since I've gotten homeplugs I've had no issues. You need one for the router and one for each Squeezebox. I only get 20-40mbs on an 85mbs homeplug but streaming quality is fine. I got 3 of these: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16833173011R -- UNCMo96 UNCMo96's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=11386 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=37296 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

For router with the dipole antenna (straight) - the signal strength is doughnut shaped with a hole in the middle ( see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Antenna_(radio)#Radiation_pattern If your SB is immediately above the router then you are probably in one of the worse spots for reception. Re: [slim] Wireless Strength - Help!
Try using homeplugs (or powerline adapters). Plug one into a power socket, connect to your router via ethernet cable. You can then go anywhere in your house and put in another homeplug into any power socket, stick an ethernet lead in it and you have a network going through your electricity cabling. Re: [slim] Squeezebox Through Windows XP ICS
Ideally I want the plug 'n play approach. In fact, I guess that's what my original question is (I'm probably making the explanation way too complicated. Sorry about that). Put simply, with Slim Server on an XP machine which is also running ICS, will Squeezebox have any issues 'finding' Slim Server? The LAN where Squeezebox and Slim Server/ICS are connected is all wired. The only wireless part is the link from the ICS/Slim Server computer to the neighbor's Wi-Fi. That wireless link is how the internet is delivered to the LAN where Squeezebox, Slim Server/ICS are located. After looking closer to the subject, the only advantage of the picture frame is its clear bright screen, but it's pricey for the functionalities offered and can only be used as this "album art display". The PSP/N700/N700/Tablet/Archos approach with wifi adds the versatility of using it as an evolved remote or as album art displayer and it's much more hackable for a reasonable price: Archos 605 wifi is 200 with 4Go static ram, it can browse the network shares, act as a upnp client, watch movie, listen to music, BROWSE THE WEB :). Mr Sinatra seems to want Slim to reinvent the wheel. There are already iPods, Media servers with internal storage, mp3 car stereos, laptops, mac mini, SFF PCs, etc. What he's proposing would be a LOT clunkier than the current architecture, and pretty useless without some kind of NAS or noisy local storage. The router page would be here: http://wiki.slimdevices.com/index.cgi?RouterStatus but it's probably not much use to you. It was started when there were compatibility problems 18 months ago and hasn't really been updated since because most of those problems were solved. Thoughts on your issue: - seeing that you have a draft-n router, do you have any draft-n features enabled? Make sure it's running 802.11g only, no throughput enhancement/turbo, etc. - perhaps your router doesn't like static IP assignments in its DHCP pool. Try restricting the DHCP pool range to 192.168.0.2 - 192.168.0.100 and give the Squeezebox an address of 192.168.0.110. - try wired first. Thanks for everyone who chimed in with suggestions. Unfortunately, I don't have the flexibility to change the configuration as I originally described it. It's not actually my installation. I'm doing it for a relative on a very tight budget and they insist on not changing what the already have. Selling them on the idea of Squeezebox was a major effort. So, the configuration I originally described is what I'm stuck with despite the excellent suggestions in this thread. With that in mind, when I plug Squeezebox into and ICS PC (which will also be running Slim Server), will the ICS box grant Squeezebox an IP address, thereby giving it access to Slim Server? Well you can still get it at Datakits for under £190 (and IIRC they still have non-Logitech branded ones!). But more insidious is that you can't buy from SlimDevices anymore if you live in Europe - you have to use Logitech, and so have to get it at £219 plus shipping, instead of the sterling equivalent price of under £175, even including VAT. What I really would like here is some integration with media center solutions as I partly mentioned in my previous post. Something like this: If I just want to play a specific artist or album I use the standard SB non color display and remote. I have no need for a color display here. If I want to select something to play together with my friends I start up the media center interface on the TV and we can browse cover art, see more information about artists and when we find something we like we can hit play in the media center interface and it would start playing on the SB. A color display on the remote solves some of this, but it is to small if you are several persons in the room and like to select something together. By media center I don't necessary mean the Microsoft solution, personally I would prefer MythTV since this is what I'm running but I realize that the majority is probably using Microsoft. -- erland Erland Isaksson 'My homepage' (http://erland.homeip.net) 'My download page' (http://erland.homeip.net/download) (Developer of 'TrackStat, SQLPlayList, DynamicPlayList, Custom Browse, Custom Scan, Custom Skip, Multi Library and RandomPlayList plugins' (http://wiki.erland.homeip.net/index.php/Category:SlimServer)) erland's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=3124 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=37279 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

Users that don't have a 24/7 server and don't have a NAS/external harddrive. - They may want the single box solution with everything in one box. 2. Users that have a NAS or USB drive but don't have a 24/7 server. - They may wan't the single box solution with everything in one box, but they probably down want a harddrive to be included. 3. Users that like to take their music collection with them to a friend. - Here I think a single box solution might be optimal, but for these users it may also make some sense to include amplifier and speakers in the box. However, as already mentioned previously, a slim device connected to SqueezeNetwork using your library uploaded at mp3tunes will probably also work for these users. 5. Users that like to take their music collection with them in the car. - Here we want a solution that has the format of a standard car stereo so it can be easily plugged in to place. We need a server part and hard drive that can run on the car battery. I think the optimal solution would be something that was in the car the whole time but could synchronize its harddrive with the system inside the house over the night. 6. Users that like to take their music collection with them when they are walking or running. - Something like an iPod is clearly the best solution here, so better integration between the iPod and SB/SlimServer would improve this situation. I'm not sure if Logitech like to focus on portable devices, if they don't some sort of integration might still be appropriate. 7. Users with large houses that needs to be able to play different music in different parts of the house, but also sometimes wants to play the same music in the whole house. - Here a slim device with a single separate server is almost the only way to go. The users could buy a single box with both SB+SlimServer and a number of extra boxes which only contains a SB. But I have a feeling some of these users already may have a 24/7 running server, so they might not be interested in the SB+SlimServer combo box at all. IMHO all these uses can't be satisfied with a single solution. I'm also not sure if Logitech tries to satisfy them all. Anyway, if they like to satisfy as many as possible I think some kind of modularised hardware and software solution is needed. Making a single device that tries to solve all cases will just result in a too large and too expensive device. There are some advantages with fat devices and some other with slim devices. So I think each customer just have to choose which one he prefer. If he likes a slim device, Logitech is a good way to go, if he like a fat devices there might be other vendors providing better solutions. -- erland Erland Isaksson 'My homepage' (http://erland.homeip.net) 'My download page' (http://erland.homeip.net/download) (Developer of 'TrackStat, SQLPlayList, DynamicPlayList, Custom Browse, Custom Scan, Custom Skip, Multi Library and RandomPlayList plugins' (http://wiki.erland.homeip.net/index.php/Category:SlimServer)) erland's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=3124 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=37279 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

It is a USB client: the USB port is so that you can plug it into a PC to copy files to it. (Painfully slow.) You can reflash it to enable USB host mode, but you will need to make your own USB cable and you must have a powered USB hub between the Nokia and any device. There is a usb-storage module, but I don't know if anyone has ever made it work (most of the interest is to use a portable keyboard... a rollup usb keyboard would make this a great laptop for ssh'ing into servers sort of annoying that you have to play cable games and carry a powered hub, too, though). A huge playlist? Depends on your concept of huge. This is NOT a fast CPU. It is pretty easy to bog it down. > > if so, it very well may be exactly what i'm looking for. definitely > has my interest. If you want SB-type sound quality, no, it won't give you that either. It does make a nice remote and I no longer have to carry a laptop with me at all times, the Nokia suffices for most emergencies at work. With headphones it's not bad for watching movies (but you will have to drop the frame rate and resolution). But it's not a Squeezebox in sound quality, nor is it able to replace slimserver in handling large libraries. -- snarlydwarf snarlydwarf's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=1179 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=37279 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

SB1 to SB2 to SB3. the fact is you can put more into a product today, than when SB3 debuted, for the same amount of money. now, perhaps i'm being optimistic as to how much, but like i said much earlier, perhaps the increased parts cost could be offset by less support issues and easier ongoing development. erland;218552 Wrote: > I can't see why the music storage needs to be separated, that just means > that I need another box. Suffice it to say that we think slim, or at least pretty slim, is the best way to go. It's not that "fat" is bad, per se, it is just that we think slim is better. What about SqueezeNetwork with MP3tunes? It's pretty much exactly what you've asked for... I understand it doesn't support lossless formats, but if it did, you would solve most of what you've asked for without fattening the device at all. > wouldn't it be cool if you could just grab your fat SB, an ext drive, > and jump in your car and road trip with it via bluetooth to your car > stereo? An iPod (or other MP3 player) accomplishes this quite nicely, is far more portable than a "fat SB3", and has the added advantage of being pocketable for even more musical enjoyment. > ...and i think the SB needs a bigger color screen, as well as a > rechargable remote that has a color screen on it, and a headphone jack > and bluetooth for headsets. > > based on what logitech offers i think everything i am talking about is > reasonable and doable, and in line with their consumer friendly POV. Since the SB3 is designed as an "across the room" experience, why would a color screen be preferred? Unless it was a pretty big screen, it would be harder to use and if were big, it would be pretty expensive. Just curious to understand what you perceive as the advantages. -- JimC "well, she wasn't all of that, but she sure was some of that." -- BKlaas' college buddy JimC's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=9428 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=37279 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

I'm not convinced that scanning is such a heavyweight process that it couldn't be run efficiently on the lightest computer platforms. What needs to happen (for many reasons, this being just one) is that full clear/scans must be the _rare_ exception, not the rule necessary to fix the many remaining scanning idiosyncracies. An incremental scan of new and changed material should suit a lightweight platform just fine. > * Precompute things to reduce efforts to support the player in realtime. > For example, Browse artists/albums/songs could be divided up in groups > (no of groups could be a configurable parameter, e.g. 20) which means > that the number of artists/albums/songs never exceeds 20 at the outmost > level of the browsing tree, and each level of the browsing tree has at > most 20 branches. Re: [slim] Interest in developing a low complixity SS
I wonder if a device like the linutop http://www.linutop.com/ has enough power to run SS already today. Hell, it even has an VGA-out and of course ethernet and the concept of running the OS from an USB key makes software upgrades almost idiot-proof from the vendor side. Attach a simple USB hard disk to it or use a NAS storage in your network, even attaching a touch screen seems possible. All given that the linutop has enough processing power and touch screen drivers exist, of course.
