Re: [slim] Running SS on an iMac - Problems

2007-08-02 Thread BigBirdy

All wired right now until we determine the problem. Thanks for the reply
and sorry about the double posting. I didnt realize that a post to the
mailing list would also get posted to the forums. The client has a
number of network issues as well, as I discovered tonight so will be
trying to resolve these first. One strange behavior is that we can plug
a Linux and Windows laptop into a particular 5 port Linksys switch and
they connect fine and work fine internally and externally. Plug the
iMac in and the light on the switch goes on, goes off, goes on, goes
off etc so I am thinking a possible ip conflict since the Imac is
staticly assigned. Will keep plugging away at it.

Thanks again for the help and suggestions.

[slim] Album thumbnails not displaying

2007-08-02 Thread wnshall

Posted in a recent thread about album art:

I am having the same issue. I've placed cover.jpg in the appropriate
folders but it isn't displayed in the album views. However, if you
click on the album, the album art is displayed.
This would appear to be an instance of Bug 5138:
http://bugs.slimdevices.com/show_bug.cgi?id=5138.
(although I'm running 6.5.1 instead of 6.5.2 in the bug, and I don't
think it has anything to do with playlists in my case.) In my case it
seems that only cover art that I've added recently is not showing up.
Are there constraints on the size of album art? In my case the trouble
files are generaly smaller than the typical Amazon file (say 150x150
rather than 300x300 or 500x500). I wouldn't think smaller would break
it, but ...

Is anyone else having this problem?

-Steve

Hmmm ... just tried it again and it was fine.

So - I'll add a new entry in WikiRadio called something like "NPR
Podcasts (official)" since it comes direct from them ... and if it
seems to work for everyone that uses that facility ... then we can
remove the old one and rename etc etc.

Re: [slim] Trouble with NPR podcast opml

2007-08-02 Thread Paul Webster

Thanks, NPR, for updating your header.

I was going to put a pointer to this in WikiRadio - essentially to
replace the existing (old) hand-crafted one that someone else made for
it.
However, although it works ... the podcast names do not appear in the
Squeezebox.
I think that this is because the field names in the NPR XML file are
not quite what SlimServer is looking for.

Any chance of a SlimServer update to support these as alternate names?
Here is how it starts ..

Code:

(it looks great in the SlimServer web gui via MyPicks - but not so good
at he Squeezebox)

Re: [slim] New router blocking squeezebox

2007-08-02 Thread snarlydwarf

MAC as in Media Access Control, not the PC made by Apple.

One of the "layers" of Wireless security is to tell the router or
access point, "only talk to these machines," identified by MAC address.
It isn't much of a security measure since it is trivial to change the
MAC address of a machine...

That said, it is probably under Security Settings on your router,
something like, "Only allow these clients to connect" or something.

You can leave it on if your network is pretty constant (just remember
to add new clients to that list when a friend brings over his laptop),
or turn it off if it gets to be annoying: the security it gives is
pretty minimal.

I don't think you said if it was wired or wireless.

Can't harm to check it wired, and also to check it wireless with the SB
really close to the computer.

Also let us know what router he has.

I would check whether he can connect to SqueezeNetwork. If he can't,
it's an issue with the SB and router, perhaps just the wrong password;
if he can it's something to do with the IMac and SlimServer.

Corporates will want an internal rate of return of at least 20% on
investment, anything less and their Group Treasury would prefer to keep
cash on the money markets.

Logitech paid out $20M for Slim Devices IIRC; they know that gouging of
UK consumers is easy. $2000 in the USA and £1700 in the UK for a TP when
the US:GBP rate is 2:1!

Sounds like you turned on MAC authentication at some point? It
probably autofilled in "things I see right now" when you turned it on.

is there anything else I can check? Other machines connected into the

Maybe it was damaged further in transit back to Logitech. If you insured

[slim] Logitech being absolutely OTT ?!

2007-08-02 Thread jaysung

Hello,
I wonder if the guys over at Logitech are being absolutely mad? Why?
Because of pricing changes to the transporter over here in Europe /
Germany...
Prices are being constant $2000 for the US ONLY they don't ship to
Europe anymore. Why? NO explanation just a link to Logitech.com. Where
exactly the same unit is priced arround 2500 Euro! I don't have to tell
you about currency exchange rates at the moment.
I was planning to get a transporter as soon as I could afford it...
That is to say a month ago I would have been able to purchase it over
in the US and get it shipped to to my door and pay via credit card.
That would have been arround 1500 Euro for exchange rates at the
moment. Now Logitech one of the big players aquired slimdevices. Good
choice would I think although their products are not quite mass market
I guess. But Logitech has all the developements Sean Adams and his
fellows have put so much work in. Being able to manufacture these units
on a bigger basis perhaps maybe the prices would drop and with a big
name on them the would eventually reach mass market in Europe... But
the oposite is true. The funny thing about this is that with all the
developement done the units shouldn't be to expensive to make. I think
Slimdevices had their calculations and had areasonable chance to
actually refund their developement. Why does logitech make such a
difference amongst their customers now. Is it all about !SQUEEZING! the
last bit of profit out of a company that was only aquired to disapear in
Logithech's drawer's? Why should I just because I happen to live in
Europe pay about 150% of the price every body in the US pays??? Anyway,
it is your decision. The squeezebox REALLY makes music accessable for
blind persons because CDs arn't easyly recognisable if you can't see
the covers and the perspective of the possibility to browse a music
collection by a web browser actually made me buy a decent hifi thinking
to hook up a transporter. But I think you have actually lost a customer.
:( I know it's just "take it or leave it" and I shouldn't kikc my can
all over the place. But just notice that there might be other potential
european customers who arn't too happy. And well, "We will rock you!"
But you don't care anyway? To often are good ideas bought ONLY to be
thrown into the bin.
But perhaps there is an explanation? Perhaps it's just European power
suplys that are out of stock? :o

Re: [slim] New router blocking squeezebox

2007-08-02 Thread snarlydwarf

The choices are gateway and router? That is an odd selection.

A Gateway is a "where packets that are not local to this network should
be sent". Also called a "default route"...

A router is "a device that knows how to get to 2 or more networks and
makes decisions on where to send packets based on its knowlede of those
networks."

In most cases, the gateway -is- a router... what good is passing
packets onto a supposedly more net-knowledgeable machine if it doesn't
know what to do with them...

What model router is this?

Hi

Same kind of problem as you. Had an SB3 working fine with a Linksys
router and Virgin cable, now have moved house and have Sky BB with a
Netgear DG834GT Router.
My old SB3 connects and plays fine wirelessly. My new Logitech branded
SB3 which arrived today will not connect, settings are same and i'm
using 128bit wep. Wired it works okay but not wireless.

Got same problem with my laptop, will not connect to the new router.
Doesn't make sense, any ideas? Anything different inside the Logitech
?

thanks

Port forwarding should be unneeded, and may in fact confuse things.

It is designed so that "A-Host-On-The-Internet" can connect to
"A-Specific-Host-On-Your-LAN"... It should do nothing for LAN-LAN
connections.

Other than setting your WPA passkey and your SSID, most consumer
routers should take no configuration.

[slim] New router blocking squeezebox

2007-08-02 Thread Gibbo

Hello,

Had my squeezebox working for a while, now got a new router as have
switched form DSL to cable. My squeezebox can access SN through the
router, but just times out when I try to access SS? the windows
firewall is obviously the same as before, allows through stuff to 9000
and 3483, in the router I hava mac address filtering, but that is
obviously fine as it can access SN, I have WPA but again must be fine
as SN is accessable, so can only be the router firewall? to be honest I
can't find how to turn the firewall off, its a linksys router, in port
range forwarding I have forwarded 9000 and 3483 to the computers ip, is
this right to do? can't think of what else i'm missin? any help would be
great!

However, since I've gotten homeplugs I've had no issues. You need one
for the router and one for each Squeezebox. I only get 20-40mbs on an
85mbs homeplug but streaming quality is fine.

I got 3 of these:

For router with the dipole antenna (straight) - the signal strength is
doughnut shaped with a hole in the middle ( see
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Antenna_(radio)#Radiation_pattern
If your SB is immediately above the router then you are probably in one
of the worse spots for reception. Try angling both router antennae
horizontal instead of vertical to see if it makes a difference.

Try using homeplugs (or powerline adapters).

Plug one into a power socket, connect to your router via ethernet
cable. You can then go anywhere in your house and put in another
homeplug into any power socket, stick an ethernet lead in it and you
have a network going through your electricity cabling. I find the
85Mb/s are fine, but 200Mb/s also available.

Re: [slim] Squeezebox Through Windows XP ICS

2007-08-02 Thread ShutterShock

Ideally I want the plug 'n play approach. In fact, I guess that's what
my original question is (I'm probably making the explanation way too
complicated. Sorry about that).

Put simply, with Slim Server on an XP machine which is also running
ICS, will Squeezebox have any issues 'finding' Slim Server?

The LAN where Squeezebox and Slim Server/ICS are connected is all
wired. The only wireless part is the link from the ICS/Slim Server
computer to the neighbor's Wi-Fi. That wireless link is how the
internet is delivered to the LAN where Squeezebox, Slim Server/ICS are
located.

Hope this is making sense.

You might have to enable a separate DHCP server. But static IP
addresses are so much easier, is there any reason you need DHCP here?

After looking closer to the subject, the only advantage of the picture
frame is its clear bright screen, but it's pricey for the
functionalities offered and can only be used as this "album art
display".

The PSP/N700/N700/Tablet/Archos approach with wifi adds the versatility
of using it as an evolved remote or as album art displayer and it's much
more hackable for a reasonable price:

Archos 605 wifi is 200€ with 4Go static ram, it can browse the network
shares, act as a upnp client, watch movie, listen to music, BROWSE THE
WEB :). I'm about to buy it, I just wait as I wonder what SB/LUA
project will give birth...

I realize that I'm polluting every topics with this idea but it has
became some sort of obsession ;).

Same problem here I think. I can play internetradio from SlimPicks for

For exmaple, the URL

is fine with Linux/MPlayer, while Squeezebox refuses to play it.

Mr Sinatra seems to want Slim to reinvent the wheel. There are already
iPods, Media servers with internal storage, mp3 car stereos, laptops,
mac mini, SFF PCs, etc. What he's proposing would be a LOT clunkier
than the current architecture, and pretty useless without some kind of
NAS or noisy local storage. Flash memory is limited and there are
already plenty of flash memory music players.

The SB3 is a NETWORKED player, in an increasingly networked world. Let

Are both devices wireless?

Wiring at least one of them to the router is the first thing you should
do when experiencing wireless bandwidth issues. It's usually easiest to
wire the server, particularly with the Qnap because it doesn't have to
be anywhere - you don't need constant physical access to it. It's best
to locate it near your router and wire it.

2007-08-02 Thread Mark Lanctot

The router page would be here:

http://wiki.slimdevices.com/index.cgi?RouterStatus

but it's probably not much use to you. It was started when there were
compatibility problems 18 months ago and hasn't really been updated
since because most of those problems were solved.

Thoughts on your issue:

- seeing that you have a draft-n router, do you have any draft-n
features enabled? Make sure it's running 802.11g only, no throughput
enhancement/turbo, etc.

- perhaps your router doesn't like static IP assignments in its DHCP
pool. Try restricting the DHCP pool range to 192.168.0.2 -
192.168.0.100 and give the Squeezebox an address of 192.168.0.110.

- try wired first. If that works, IP address assignment is correct and
it's a wireless issue.

Thanks for everyone who chimed in with suggestions. Unfortunately, I
don't have the flexibility to change the configuration as I originally
described it. It's not actually my installation. I'm doing it for a
relative on a very tight budget and they insist on not changing what
the already have. Selling them on the idea of Squeezebox was a major
effort. So, the configuration I originally described is what I'm stuck
with despite the excellent suggestions in this thread.

With that in mind, when I plug Squeezebox into and ICS PC (which will
also be running Slim Server), will the ICS box grant Squeezebox an IP
address, thereby giving it access to Slim Server? I'm thinking yes, in
light of the fact that when ICS is activated a DHCP server is created as
well. Put another way, when Squeezebox is initially connected, it
should 'look like' its connecting to a router. Again, any thoughts
appreciated.

Well you can still get it at Datakits for under £190 (and IIRC they
still have non-Logitech branded ones!).

But more insidious is that you can't buy from SlimDevices anymore if
you live in Europe - you have to use Logitech, and so have to get it at
£219 plus shipping, instead of the sterling equivalent price of under
£175, even including VAT.

And say nothing of the Transporter price - you could get a weekend
break in New York, buy a Transporter, pay the UK VAT on your return and
still save money!

Globalisation? Not here!!

That's something I dream of, but rather than a tv with media center (i
don't have a tv:) ), what I dream of if some sort of wired or wireless
Picture frame that would have two roles:
- standing on a table, on the receiver, it would display the cover art
of the "now playing" track or the cover art of the album as I browse
the SB with the SB remote
- when i want to browse cover art, I undock this "wireless picture
frame", bring it with me on the couch and use it as a N800 touch screen
remote.

First I was looking at USB picture frame, but now, i'm looking more and
more at the Archos 605 Wifi announced in a previous post.
I don't know how this device could fit my dreams and I don't know what
slimdevices lua work will give, so I'm still waiting.

Am I missing some obvious reason why it would be preferable to run
SlimServer on the NAS if you already got a 24/7 machine which surely
has more memory and faster processor than the NAS ?

If it is convenient for the location, you might want to play with just a
aluminium foil around the squeezebox.

One of my sb3's had a hard time reliably streaming flac and simply
placing sheet of aluminium foil behind it to reflect signals towards
the access point increased the signal strength 20% and tests ok even at
max speed.

As one of the major problems with SlimServer on NAS devices is memory
consumption, I wonder why there aren't more users trying to offload MySQL to
some other machine. I once made my SlimServer use a MySQL instance running on
my web host. Or get yourself a NSLU as a DB server - you could call this a
n-tier SlimServer :-)

As for your suggestions: They all seem feasible. But the original topic was
"low complexity" - I doubt any of them would lower the complexity of today's
solution. Added flexibility often results in increased complexity. In fact I
blame SlimServer's myriad of settings to the flexibility users asked for.

The only shared access that I've had to do which involved different
networks involved family members, which was a little less fraught.

I'd probably put in a wireless access point, configured as a bridge, to
bring the wireless signal into your premises.

Plug that into the WAN port of a WiFi/Switch/Router/Firewall box, and
run your own WiFi network on a different channel, channels 1, 6 & 11
don't overlap each other, so will give you better performance.

Of course, if you can run a cable to each of your own PCs and the
Squeezebox you don't need to run your own WiFi, just bridge to the
internet connection.

Hope that helps,

John

center solutions as I partly mentioned in my previous post.

Something like this:

If I just want to play a specific artist or album I use the standard SB
non color display and remote. I have no need for a color display here.

If I want to select something to play together with my friends I start
up the media center interface on the TV and we can browse cover art,
see more information about artists and when we find something we like
we can hit play in the media center interface and it would start
playing on the SB. A color display on the remote solves some of this,
but it is to small if you are several persons in the room and like to
select something together.

By media center I don't necessary mean the Microsoft solution,
personally I would prefer MythTV since this is what I'm running but I
realize that the majority is probably using Microsoft.

We obviously agree on some things and disagree on others, I'm not sure
this discussion is going to make it any clearer. I think the
differences is just mostly related to if one prefer a fat device or a
slim device.

Anyway, I think we probably have a lot of potential users:

1.
Users that don't have a 24/7 server and don't have a NAS/external
harddrive.
- They may want the single box solution with everything in one box.

2.
Users that have a NAS or USB drive but don't have a 24/7 server.
- They may wan't the single box solution with everything in one box,
but they probably down want a harddrive to be included.

3. Users that have a 24/7 server
- They already have the server hardware so the don't want to pay extra
for server hardware they don't need.

4. Users that like to take their music collection with them to a
friend.
- Here I think a single box solution might be optimal, but for these
users it may also make some sense to include amplifier and speakers in
the box. However, as already mentioned previously, a slim device
connected to SqueezeNetwork using your library uploaded at mp3tunes
will probably also work for these users.

5. Users that like to take their music collection with them in the car.

- Here we want a solution that has the format of a standard car stereo
so it can be easily plugged in to place. We need a server part and hard
drive that can run on the car battery. I think the optimal solution
would be something that was in the car the whole time but could
synchronize its harddrive with the system inside the house over the
night.

6. Users that like to take their music collection with them when they
are walking or running.
- Something like an iPod is clearly the best solution here, so better
integration between the iPod and SB/SlimServer would improve this
situation. I'm not sure if Logitech like to focus on portable devices,
if they don't some sort of integration might still be appropriate.

7. Users with large houses that needs to be able to play different
music in different parts of the house, but also sometimes wants to play
the same music in the whole house.
- Here a slim device with a single separate server is almost the only
way to go. The users could buy a single box with both SB+SlimServer and
a number of extra boxes which only contains a SB. But I have a feeling
some of these users already may have a 24/7 running server, so they
might not be interested in the SB+SlimServer combo box at all.

IMHO all these uses can't be satisfied with a single solution. I'm also
not sure if Logitech tries to satisfy them all. Anyway, if they like to
satisfy as many as possible I think some kind of modularised hardware
and software solution is needed. Making a single device that tries to
solve all cases will just result in a too large and too expensive
device.

There are some advantages with fat devices and some other with slim
devices. So I think each customer just have to choose which one he
prefer. If he likes a slim device, Logitech is a good way to go, if he
like a fat devices there might be other vendors providing better
solutions.

Not without hacking. It is a USB client: the USB port is so that you
can plug it into a PC to copy files to it. (Painfully slow.) You can
reflash it to enable USB host mode, but you will need to make your own
USB cable and you must have a powered USB hub between the Nokia and any
device. There is a usb-storage module, but I don't know if anyone has
ever made it work (most of the interest is to use a portable
keyboard... a rollup usb keyboard would make this a great laptop for
ssh'ing into servers sort of annoying that you have to play cable
games and carry a powered hub, too, though).

A huge playlist? Depends on your concept of huge. This is NOT a fast
CPU. It is pretty easy to bog it down.

> if so, it very well may be exactly what i'm looking for. definitely

If you want SB-type sound quality, no, it won't give you that either.
It does make a nice remote and I no longer have to carry a laptop with
me at all times, the Nokia suffices for most emergencies at work. With
headphones it's not bad for watching movies (but you will have to drop
the frame rate and resolution).

But it's not a Squeezebox in sound quality, nor is it able to replace
slimserver in handling large libraries.

i addressed this in my last posts, but the main thing is that you
decrease the cost of the fat client, and keep it solid state.

you would want it to be able to read any media, be it flash or card or
HD or on the network, or whatever... but i think its unecessary to
have MUSIC storage internal to the device, unless its like a small
flash amount.

it also keeps the SB smaller and lighter, and less power needy.

well i know people who do, and i encourage people to use standby and
hibernate modes on their desktop PCs, its saves a lot of money, and is
the green thing to do.

well, over time things get better and cheaper at the same pricepoint.
SB1 to SB2 to SB3.

the fact is you can put more into a product today, than when SB3
debuted, for the same amount of money.

now, perhaps i'm being optimistic as to how much, but like i said much
earlier, perhaps the increased parts cost could be offset by less
support issues and easier ongoing development.

you absolutely could offer such a model... but i want a smaller, solid
state device, thats impervious to vibration.

besides, why add the extra cost of traditional HD storage? let the
user provide that, as per what they want the way they want it.

lets say this was the SB4.

whether they do something like this or not, its going to be around $300
if the past is any guide. so if they COULD do it for that amount, why
not?

and even if they did offer a fat and slim version, my guess is the slim

i confess you lost me on the second part... is that something SD /

yes, i was essentially saying combine the two, but keep them separate
within the one box, so as you say, no new dev is needed.

it may strike some as inelegant, but i don't think so, as it maintains

i'm not sure i agree with your last paragraph, as the tcp/ip layer

There are a legion of advantages to a slim architecture, as well.
Suffice it to say that we think slim, or at least pretty slim, is the
best way to go. It's not that "fat" is bad, per se, it is just that we
think slim is better.

What about SqueezeNetwork with MP3tunes? It's pretty much exactly what
you've asked for... I understand it doesn't support lossless formats,
but if it did, you would solve most of what you've asked for without
fattening the device at all.

An iPod (or other MP3 player) accomplishes this quite nicely, is far
more portable than a "fat SB3", and has the added advantage of being
pocketable for even more musical enjoyment.

Since the SB3 is designed as an "across the room" experience, why would
a color screen be preferred? Unless it was a pretty big screen, it
would be harder to use and if were big, it would be pretty expensive.
Just curious to understand what you perceive as the advantages.

I'm not convinced that scanning is such a heavyweight process that it
couldn't be run efficiently on the lightest computer platforms. What
needs to happen (for many reasons, this being just one) is that full
clear/scans must be the _rare_ exception, not the rule necessary to fix
the many remaining scanning idiosyncracies. An incremental scan of new
and changed material should suit a lightweight platform just fine.

I think the current SlimServer approach has room for large improvements
in efficiency. Many things have been done simply, while hoping to
introduce as few bugs as possible.

I wonder if a device like the linutop
http://www.linutop.com/
has enough power to run SS already today. Hell, it even has an VGA-out
and of course ethernet and the concept of running the OS from an USB
key makes software upgrades almost idiot-proof from the vendor side.
Attach a simple USB hard disk to it or use a NAS storage in your
network, even attaching a touch screen seems possible. All given that
the linutop has enough processing power and touch screen drivers exist,
of course.

Bye, signor_rossi.
