convert.conf:

mp3 mp3 slimp3 *

$BITRATE$ - -

I know I would! :) Maybe add an option on SN as to how sorts/browses
are displayed? bitrate, alpha, most popular, most current listeners,
etc

I think it currently sorts by most popular, which in and of itself is a
decent indicator of the stations sound quality.

Re: [slim] IR Keyboard

2007-12-28 Thread Nick Locke

I was tired when I made the last post...

I can't find any later reference to this subject in the forums.

I want a single [Pronto] IR code for A, another for B, another for
C and so on, thereby avoiding the need for repeated presses of a
numeric key.

I already have the single keys on the Pronto - but the are sending
multiple keypresses to the SB, in the same was that the SB's own remote
would.

I guess what I am looking for is a new IR file for Slimserver which can
support separate codes for each letter.

Has anyone cracked this?

Thanks, Nick

Re: [slim] cue sheets, mp3s and player sync

2007-12-28 Thread sls

Was this ever improved on? I note the original posts are from 2003, but
I still have this problem with more recent versions of slimserver
driving synchronized SB2 and SB3.

I'm playing albums ripped to wav without gaps in the tracks. The
playback is nice and continuous on a single player, but the gaps appear
when syncing the two players. I assume its the same issue.

I'm using cat5 cable to both SBs, so don't we have enough performance
available now to reduce the sync to something negligible?

Thanks,

If you're just trying to get your iTunes playlists to appear on your

playlists are stored in it's .xml file, which is what SlimServer scans
if told to use iTunes.

Do a full clear and rescan and you should find your playlists.

Re: [slim] Thinking about sending two SBs back.

2007-12-28 Thread MattB

I appreciate everyone's comments. Thanks!

Forgive my semi-rant above, but I am trying to give candid feedback on
this product from a first-use perspective. While I appreciate the
technical capabilities of the SB fans on this forum, the masses do not
possess these skills and thus any answer with the word linux (or any
of its derivatives) is not a solution for me, and most people.

I hope the folks at SD do read this thread. I think the product has
some major issues that need to be addressed for this product to
survive. It will take Apple five minutes to make a competing product
that works with iTunes, works well, and doesn't require setting up a
linux box to use. And it will come in a really nice box -- which, btw,
SD did well with the little black and red drawer inside its box.

Take Sonoa, for example. The big advantage to the SB is that it is
cheaper than Sonos. Sonos, on the other hand, just works and is easy
to use. Again compare the ipod to various other mp3 players that are
probably better and cheaper, but more difficult to use. The ipod is
destroying them.

Anyway, I guess I had four basic comments in my original post:
1) the remote lacking 26 letter buttons;
2) the Rhapsody search results being horrible;
3) the SN being slow; and
4) no direct, off the shelf, NAS connection.

Re 1), no I don't use my cell phone to text. I have both a berry and a
regular cell phone. I use the berry for sending email and SMS. Also,
this gripe with the remote needs to be taken in context with the SN
slowness and the crummy search results problems. If I have to press
the 7 button four times and have to wait two seconds between presses,
that is 8 seconds to enter one letter! Then, if I don't enter the
complete name (e.g., Carole King), I get back 275 search results (see
the Rhapsody post mentioned above). Ugh, then I need to start over.
Next time, I just enter the full name (which takes about 2 minutes to
do and two years off my life) and wonder whether I really want to sign
up for Rhapsody. I presume whether I sign up for Rhapsody matters to
the folks at SD as they probably get a piece of the action.

Re 2), I read the Rhapsody thread and I appreciate the complexities of
the problem. That said, the thread was from April. Where is the fix?
I see several great suggestions, both recognized by Real and SD, so why
does the product still have this problem at Christmas?

Re 3), don't blame Verizon FIOS. It is not a slow ISP. And if it is,
it is state of the art. The slowness is SD's problem if they want to
sell the units. They need to figure out a way to fix this. For
example, why does every letter I enter need to go back to the SN? Why
can't I enter a whole word and have it then get sent as a bundle back
to the SN? Sort of the same way that I am entering this post -- the
whole post gets sent at once. I don't expect it to instantly start a
song or log into the squeeze network, but there should only be a couple
of times, when I experience latency. Not every time I press a button.

Re 4), I don't know linux and don't want to. I just want to buy a
music player. I don't want to leave my computer on all of the time,
but would be happy to leave a NAS on all of the time. Whether this
makes sense or not doesn't really matter because it is driving how I
spend my money. Which I am happy to give to SD if they make a product
that can fill the need. Sonos does, but it is more expensive. I am
willing to give up the fancy remote of Sonos for less money, but expect
similar features -- like the ability to read music directly from the NAS
without any hacks.

Again, sorry for being critical of the SB and SD, but unless you can
tell me that my issues above are wrong, these really are unacceptable
problems in a third generation product. While this product is great
for people who are hard core techies, it will never survive with
non-techies who don't have an IT department unless these issues are
fixed.

[slim] Rhapsody: SB vs Sonos vs Tivo?

Can you search by keyword on the SB?

Is the nokia 770 skin similar to the Sonos remote for rhap. -- is
there as much search flexability with the nokia skin? I,e, can you

Is the Tivo w/ rhapsody a good alternative - since it has a great TV

IMHO, only a very small part of the value proposition for the SB/TP is
using Pandora/Rhapsody type services.

Navigating a raw NAS file-system is a rather poor experience, the
slimserver provides the browse/search and all the plugins.

It's 1.5 times more bandwidth x the number of people listening. Imagen
if your electric bill went up 1.5 times from what you are currently
paying now. A 50% cost increase to any business is going to hurt. And
it *really* puts the hurt on a small struggling business/industry like
Internet Radio that is already in dire financial trouble.

128k to 192k and the audio difference is negligible. Better, but not
outstandingly so. Jumping from 128k to 320k, now THERE is a
significant audio difference.

BTW: Something to be careful of when limiting bitrate (searching or
playing) is that you may be knocking out some great streams that sound
very good. Try to keep an eye on the better encoded audio formats like
Mp3Pro. An MP3Pro at 64k probably sounds equal to a standard MP3 at
128k.

About the Uncompressed Stream

About KEXP's Uncompressed CD-Quality Stream

KEXP is the first radio station in the world to offer uncompressed
audio on the internet.

You'll hear KEXP's broadcast in high-fidelity audio, with sound quality
that is actually better than our FM signal. In fact, it's nearly CD
quality.

* Regular internet radio streams at around 60 kilobits per second

* MP3's average about 160 kilobits per second

* KEXP's uncompressed audio streams at 1400 kilobits (1.4 megabits)
per second.

To access it, you'll need Windows Media Player, version 6.3 or higher.
You'll also need a high-speed connection such as:

* A full T1 connection

* An ethernet connection

* A fast DSL line

* A cable modem (may work -- depending on how busy your network is
at the time)

Now you're ready to check out 24-hour uncompressed audio #8211; only
at KEXP.org!

This is true if you are using an MP3Pro decoder. The squeezebox does

Another consideration regarding the poor responsiveness from

the behavior that you describe. Yes, it is frustrating. But then I
either throttle the download or wait until it is done and things run
normally again.

Do you see this poor behavior with the network idle? Since FIOS sends
TV over the IP network, could that have an impact? Not trying to blame
FIOS but just trying to see if there is a large amount of local network
activity that could be causing your responsiveness issue.

You will want to run SqueezeCenter7.0 for these features.

Further, if you have a Nokia tablet for using the Nokia770 skin, you

Hi

I bought my SB v3 (firmware 81) today. My wireless AP is working since
there are other nearly connected laptops to it.

I've done everything exactlly as the manual mention. But does NOT
appear any wireless options for me when setting up the device.

I've tried to reset to factory defaults which didn't help.

I can see the menu Set up network then I press right, and the next
question is obtain IP using dhcp or use static ip.

I can connect the slimserver using twisted pair. But it's weird why the
wireless options doesn't appear that are in the manual.

Grateful for any help

it not be equal to (or close to) a 256k standard MP3 stream? Or am I
not understanding this (which is very likely). :)

Or is it that to an SB3: 128k MP3Pro = 128k standard MP3?

Should be able to, I would think. Used to run my Netgear MP101 exactly
that way, ie without a router. **Think** you need a crossover cable

A NAS is actually a computer as indeed is the Sonus remote. I can
understand your point about not wanting to leave your laptop or desktop
on all the time, but it's possible to set-up the SB3s to run with an
off-the-shelf NAS (so long as it can run Slimserver), or to build a NAS
using Linux and standard components. The power of the SB3 is in the
flexibility and openness of the approach, but the downside is that that
can make it a little geeky to setup compared to an 'Apple-type'
approach. You don't have to learn Linux, but if you are prepared to
get your hands a little dirty, there are lots of solutions and helpful
people here.

makes sense or not doesn't really matter because it is driving how I
spend my money. Which I am happy to give to SD if they make a product
that can fill the need. Sonos does, but it is more expensive. I am
willing to give up the fancy remote of Sonos for less money, but expect
similar features -- like the ability to read music directly from the NAS
 without any hacks.
 ...
Again, sorry for being critical of the SB and SD, but unless you can
tell me that my issues above are wrong, these really are unacceptable
problems in a third generation product. While this product is great
for people who are hard core techies, it will never survive with
non-techies who don't have an IT department unless these issues are
 fixed...

No, your issues are not wrong, they are perfectly valid from the
consumer/clinet point of view. And you have right to vote with your
wallet. Sonos unit offers some goodies that you consider important.
However, they come with the price (I understand more than double). You
may not realize it, but the techincall difference between the two is
more than just a fancy remote.

However, as you have noticed, this product is (has been) geared towards
the somewhat technical crowd that tends to get involved, or have needs
that match the product.

For example, I don't care for internet feeds all that much. Prefer
higher quality sound and to listen to the music of my own choioce. I
also poses technical ability to get out of the box functionality from
SB in about 5 minutes. So for me, SB is perfect and offers much more
value than sonos. After all, how often one makes $300+ for a 5 minutes
of work.

Now, if you choose to still give a SB concept a chance, you might find
out that some of your concerns are easily resolved. For example:

- slow and non-responsive remote: I have re-mapped my amp's remote to
control SB with its CD dedicated keys. It is way faster and SB reacts
to it better that to the original one.

- too many keystrokes: there's a plugin called 'Lazy Search'. Very nice
piece that would allow you to get to your exemplary 7 character search
in maybe 4 or 5 strokes. (it's not based on 26 key kbd, but on the
theory of probability - 'smart involvement rather than throwing money
away', at works again)

- PC vs. NAS: right now, I'm listening to the music away from home that
comes from 'buddy'. I left it on this morning when I left home. 'Buddy'
is my music server, that I choose not to call either PC or NAS. So, no
PCs or NOSs involved, just 'buddy' :). Seriously, you do realise that
NOS is just a PC in a different skin and with the serious performance
issues. So, if you are going to have something on, it really doesn't
matter how it's called. Lots of people here have old PCs that are used
as NAS's, always on and tucked somewhere away.

But hey, if you still shoose to go different route, there's nothing
wrong with that too.

I recently noticed that SS was not updating new music and decided to do

To cut a long story short - I have read page after page of updating etc
and I now have a TS-101 that although has all my music on it, cannot be
accessed at 192.168.1.9:9000 or 9001, but still ok at 6000.

I think I may have inadvertedly installed/buggered about with things

My question is, How can I restore the thing back to factory settings
and start all over again?

Many many thanks for any help - I am extremely frustrated and lack the

Re: [slim] Can I plug an SB3 directly into my laptop?

2007-12-28 Thread haraldo

A safe bet is to buy a very simple switch with ethernet only connectors,
there are heaps of possibilites, D-link provides some very reasonably
priced alternatives.

Just make sure there's a dhcp server in the switch, if not, you will
have to set a fixed ip address in your laptop and you don't want to do
that. (At least I don't)
Normally, You can configure the switch so that your laptop's mac
address always gets the the same ip address, allowing the config of the
SB3 to connect to a fixed ip address.

I'm using such a setup myself with a D-Link DI-604 switch, because I'm
having issues with wireless coverage Our house is too large :-)

This is much better than using special setup and crossed cables. In
this case, simpler is not better.

Agreed. But, if what the OP is trying to achieve here is a temporary
setup (like taking the laptop, SB and powered speakers to a party to

setting and clearing a couple of IPs isn't much of a price to pay.
Even if time==$$$, that's still cheaper than a cheap router.

Re: [slim] Can I plug an SB3 directly into my laptop?

2007-12-28 Thread gharris999

A simple crossover ethernet cable is the most that you'll need. But
you'll need to set the laptop's nic the SB to static IP addresses on
the same subnet. (E.g. laptop=192.168.1.100, SB=192.168.1.101).

I've put together a couple of SB setups wiring the SB directly to a
mini-itx based linux slimserver using a very short crossover cable and
static IPs. With the wired=wireless bridging on the SB turned on, I
can even tie the whole thing (the SB AND the server) wirelessly to the
local network.

The downside with using the hardwired cabling is that you have to set
fixed addresses in both the SB3 and the laptop, if the laptop stay
fixed there, then that's fine and it will work...

But if you're moving the laptop around you will have to reconfigure the
ip addresses on the network card every time you hook the pc up to
another hardwired network. That makes the switch solution simpler
because you don't have to do that.

[slim] Playlist keeps clearing

If I do a random mix or play some music, I occasionally just get

will ape files, but certain files will just cause everything to stop
and the playlist to clear. Is there a log or something else I can use
to determine what's happening?

Slimserver is installed on a Windows XP Pro machine. Originally I was

Yes, that's correct. Touch the stylus in the search box and the

runs in the Nokia's web browser, and text input is done in this fashion
for everything on the entire Nokia OS.

Re: [slim] Can I plug an SB3 directly into my laptop?

2007-12-28 Thread haraldo

Yeah

Simplest to do the x-over cable and if it gets too much hassle, then
you could always add a switch later. You don't burn any bridges by
doing this.

I CORRECT MYSELF:
You can set an autoconfiguration ip-address on your network card (if
you're running windows?) This means:
if there's no dhcp server around, then you'll get at default IP adress
that will apply when you're using the hardwired setup.

And if you additionally configure the card to automatically receive IP
addresses, then you will also get the IP address when there's a dhcp
server around.

In which way, the laptop will work at home with your squeezebox, and on
the road with other networks. No reconfiguring at all.

Was that clear as fog?

Two comments that noone else seems to have mentioned:

On (1): If you don't like the remote you can use your blackberry or any

typing on an iphone isn't that great either). With a little effort you

On (3): This seems somewhat unique to you. My SN has very low latency,

you could look into the causes. Possibilities include your ISP (my bet)
or something about your network. Also, as it's a problem at your end,
there's nothing SD can do to fix it.

How are folders on your drive organized and what is designated as your
music folder? If both the flac folder and the mp3 folder are below the
root music folder, then both will be seen.

If that's not the case, is there any chance that you've created a

Re: [slim] Can I play files not indexed in the library?

2007-12-28 Thread BigAl

Someone else may come along with a better answer, but I'm pretty sure
the answer is no with one exception. That is (assuming the file is in
the directory/subdirectories pointed to in the SB server settings) you
can browse/music folder to the song.

This situation would happen when you've recently ripped/acquired new
music files and haven't yet done a scan to pick up new music. Browsing
to the file will also add the song to the SS database at the same time.
This can be done from the remote. You can also do it using the web
interface from a machine not running Slimserver if both are on the
network and there isn't any security getting in the way. This may vary
depending on setup, for me I enter http://xxx:9000 where xxx is the name
of the computer that hosts slimserver.

Sort of. So long as the URI is reachable from the slimserver host, you
can paste a URI into the 'Tune in URL' box on the Slimserver web
interface and it'll get played. The URI can be a directory name or
filename.

Also the Orange CD Music Library can call the slimserver API and have
any file indexed in the Orange CD Library played (again so long as the
file can be accessed from the slimserver host, and Orange CD can help
by mapping between URI roots)

the itunes with no problem. I don't see anything in the flac directory
pointing to the mp3's Could it be a bug in 6.5.5?
 Thanks again,

What's your Music Folder set to?

If it's the root of the F:\ drive then it would be _expected_ to
include the mp3 folder as well as the flac folder in your library. If
that's the case, just change it to F:\flac and run a clear/rescan. If
it's set to F:\flac, then something else is going on.

Simplest to do the x-over cable and if it gets too much hassle, then
you could always add a switch later. You don't burn any bridges by
 doing this.

Let me also correct something else: a switch would be no help in this
situation; switches do not, as a rule, run DHCP servers. I presume
you're talking about one of the many domestic router boxes which come
with a 4-port switch attached.

[slim] SlimTray disappears

2007-12-28 Thread Turnandcough

SlimTray is no longer visible in taskbar. This began happening
sporadically about a month ago but would usually correct itself with a
reboot but now it's disappeared completely. I tried a few clean
sweeps/re-installs of Slimserver(6.5.4 6.5.5)but no dice. Immediately
after install the icon is visible in taskbar but as soon as I
right-click on it - it disappears. I tried opening it directly from the
Slimserver program folder but it won't open. I don't know if there's any
relation but I had tried out Slimcenter 7.0(beta) a while ago but
removed it because it was too buggy. I'm using Windows XP SP2

An ex of mine took a photography class where the teacher insisted that
digital cameras were a total waste of money: you buy them and within a
year there is something new and better, so you should just spend $400
on a film camera and film so you don't waste money on that digital
stuff.

I am sure in the days of Henry Ford, people believed they should not
buy a car because next years model would be better anyway, so why waste
money on this years, just stick with the horse.

Does the Squeezebox3 do what you need it to do? Then buy it. If it
doesn't, then don't. Technology always improves, so all you do is
deprive yourself of enjoyment and functionality in the present.

While this principle is of course sound, it remains the case that if
you bought the Mk3 at a time when everyone else knew that the Mk4
(twice as good and half the price) was coming out next week, you'd be
pretty miffed.

So its a fair question to ask, but OP shouldn't be surprised if no-one
from Logitech/SD answers.

I will just point out that if you buy direct you have a 30-day return
period so you are covered for at least that long.

[slim] Music keeps stopping on FLAC files

2007-12-28 Thread norderney

A problem has developed over the last week. If I have the SqueezeCenter
web interface open on the Status screen, every time the web interface
refreshes the screen it causes the music playing on my SqueezeBox to
stop for a few seconds. This ONLY happens when playing FLAC files.
There is no problem with MP3 files. If I close the web interface then
the music plays ok without any breaks.

I get the same problem running the web interface on my PC and also
running it on my Dell Axim Pocket PC PDA. The music also stops for a
few seconds when selecting tracks using the search feature on the web
interface. If I close the web interface and select tracks via the SB
remote control then the music plays perfectly and does not stop
playing.

I am running SqueezeCenter Version: 7.0 - 15528 on a PC running Windows
Vista Ultimate with 3GB of RAM with an Intel Core 2 CPU 2.66MHz. I am
running Internet Explorer 7.0.6000.16575 on my PC, but the problem also
occurs when I use the web interface on my Dell Axim, which uses a
different version of Internet Explorer.

There is no problem if I am accessing other web sites on either my PC
or my PDA with internet explorer while playing music.

Anybody got any ideas what the problem could be?

Are any of your playlists pointing into the mp3 directory? I'm not
certain how it works, as I don't use playlists very much, but I suspect
it may scan the whole tree below a file pointed at by a playlist.

(C'mon guys, someone chime in here - iTunes and playlists are not my

Maybe it keeps the iTunes playlists in the database. If you browse
Playlists and click on one of the iTunes lists, doesn't it give you see
an option to Delete it?

I'm also a little suprised that a clear/rescan type of rescan doesn't
blow these away. I thought that everything in the database was deleted
with such a scan.

iTunes playlists can't neither be edited nor deleted. But they shouldn't show

Re: [slim] Can I play files not indexed in the library?

2007-12-28 Thread RayG

Thanks for the tips on the Tune in URL box. Didn't know it could be
used with a filename. After seeing it work, I traced the HTTP headers
from the Web interface and saw how the requests work at that level.
Then I hacked a small Python program to do it from the command line.

After a bit more searching, I found the HTTP interface documented under
Help, Technical Information, The SlimServer Web Interface. Now I can
play a file or add (queue) it to the playlist from the command line.
Just what I was looking for.

Thanks again.
