For the moment, you'll need the Squeezebox Controller to setup the

[slim] SqueezeBox cuts out with Wireless Bridging

2008-01-27 Thread obrienk

Hi Folks,

I'm using my SqueezeBox as a wireless bridge for my XBox (original
version). Everything works perfectly, except that when I power on the
XBox, the SqueezeBox looses its connection the screen goes blank.
The wireless connection is still functioning (because the XBox works
fine), but I need to remove the power from the SqueezeBox to make it
restart and find the connection for itself again.

Has anybody else encountered this? I'm currently using the latest
daily build of SC7, but have always had this problem with version 6.5
and up.

Cheers,
K.

A2 and A5 both auto-switch. Also think about pairing some regular

and is dirt cheap (~$60). It doesn't autoswitch, but it only uses 1W
(even when playing) so who cares :)

I have 3 (original) T-Amps already. Didn't know they used only 3 watts

Re: [slim] Receiver with built-in amp

2008-01-27 Thread Zaragon

Slim/Logitech don't talk about new products.

But it seems unlikely since it isn't really in keeping with the product
philosophy. Amps are a subjective items, different people like different
qualities of different devices. How amps interact with the speaker
systems also are a matter of taste.

What may just happen is a 'boom box' or similar with built in speakers
but it isn't anything I'd expect in even the mid term future (read next
couple of years).

PC speakers have and are improving all the time. Driven not only by
people ripping their music collections, or buying them on-line, but
also by the demands of games for higher quality sounds.

Game immersion has a lot to do with sound from the bass rumble of a
spaceship to the rapid response of a gunshot and the spacial
positioning that needs a reasonably high quality speaker.

In the end it comes down to what you like the sound of so as usual try
them out in the shop.

Re: [slim] Wireless bridge question

2008-01-27 Thread hau

seanadams;262463 Wrote:
I am looking at our bridging implementation, and it is designed to
forward to all ports in the event of a unicast packet whose MAC is not
in its table. It is not clear to me if this is our problem or if
something else is going on, so I am hesitant to open a bug without
 knowing any specifics.

It would be helpful to know whether the access point is actually
sending the packet out to the wireless lan in the first place. To test
that, put a wireless PC on it and run ethereal. I am not sure but I
think you can monitor unicast traffic to other hosts that way without
any special setup - you probably would need to disable encryption.

I was so happy getting the thing to work, that I thought of not doing
any further investigations. But, as you seem to be concerned, I took my
laptop and started testing.

Based on my non-scientific approach, it seems that the access point
(ADSL-modem w/ WLAN) is the one to blame! So, I'd say that there is no
need dig further on SB3's bridging implementation.

As I had windump already installed, I used it on two machines, other
being on the LAN and the other on WLAN. On ADSL modem I had two IP
addresses with static ARP, the other with the real one and the other
with MAC broadcast. Then I changed several times the IP address where
the modem should forward the WOL-packet coming from dslreports.com. Not
a single packet appeared on the WLAN with the real MAC address, but when
I changed the address to the broadcast MAC, they were nicely printed out
on the screen of the laptop on WLAN. All packets of course were received
by the PC on LAN.

I will make a note for the tech guys at ADSL modem manufacturer.

Best regards,
Mika

really can't be long before they produce some sort of sort of SB3

[slim] OSX software update and slimserver

2008-01-27 Thread mmg_fan

just updated my software (ran software update, already had leopard

They're certainly not as good as my Mission bookshelf speakers, but
they're not far behind my Swans M200's. If you need really small, good
looking active speakers they probably sound better than you'd expect
them to, but if you can get away with larger ones...physics doesn't
like small speakers :)

I have a pair on a desk in our study and they work well in that

When you say a perl script, do you mean a standalone perl script? If so
thats not a plugin.

If its a perl module pluginname.pm then you can just put it in the

Can you indicate where you got the plugin from?

[slim] need help, mac, linksys router and ever-changing IP address

2008-01-27 Thread JHZR2

Hello,

Some time back I bought a logitch squeezebox, and installed the slim
server software onto my mac. Great. Its a fun little device, works
great except for my wireless internet and router setup.

Here is the issue. My wifi router is in one room, the squeezebox is in
another. The mac is hard-wired to one of the ethernet ports on the
router (which is a Linksys BEFW11S4, FWIW, bought may 2002).

I have to set up the squeezebox to find the server at some ip address -
the address of the computer it resides on. The problem is that any time
that my mac is restarted, etc., and takes a new lease on an IP address,
the actual address is subject to change. Sometimes it is 192.168.1.100,
sometimes .103, sometimes even .110. I have a number of other computers
that go on and off from time to time and use the intermediate IP
addresses.

So, I was hoping to set static IP addresses to the wired connections on
the router, so that if the mac is plugged into connection #1, DHCP will
always give it IP address 'N'. But the linksys instructions do not
explain if this is possible or doable.

So then I try to set up my mac such that it uses DHCP with a manual IP
address. I set the IP address outside of the DHCP realm (the router is
set to start dhcp addresses at 192.168.1.100), I set it to
192.168.1.50. It works until the computer is restarted, when it takes a
different IP address given to it by DHCP. If I set the manual IP address
within the realm of what DHCP is set to give out on the router, i.e.
above .100, it does the same thing.

If I set it up on the computer to totally work manually, and put in ip
address, subnet mask and router IP address, nothing ever works, I cant
get onto the internet.

So right now Im stuck manually finding the current IP address of my
mac, turning on my squeezebox, manually re-entering all of the WEP
keys, etc. EVERY time I want to use the device. Total pain in the
butt.

So, how can I set up the mac/router combo such that the mac always has
the same IP address, and that nothing changes the networking settings
that I have?

Thanks,

JMH

Re: [slim] SlimServer iTunes plugin...

Hello,
Two small points while I have the floor:

1. I read somewhere on the slimdevices site about SS that there was no
need under version 6.5.4 to rescan a musicbase managed through iTunes
presumably after changes and/or additions. I am using 6.5.5 five SB2+3s
and I never came across this possibility?

2. Concerning the new Duet hand-held controller: Am I to understand the
I would be able to run my whole installation with this Controller,
collectively and individually (each SB separately)? My present setup
consists of Winxp SS 6.5.5 SB2s and SB3s using both ethernet and wifi
and a (iTunes managed) musicbase of some size.

Any clarification and help would be appreciated.

You can do it without a search, but not quite as easily as you
suggest:

Now playing (shows the playlist, highlighting the current track)
Right (shows the track info menu, showing the 'love this track')
Down (shows the title)
Down (shows the artist)
Down (shows the album)
Play (plays that album)

It's not quite as nice as your suggestion, but you don't have to
actually hunt around to find the album.

[slim] Help? Winamp not connecting/recognized

Hi, all. Hoping someone can help. I've been connecting to my machine at

Winamp will still connect, and I can see the SC web interface. However,

about a second) and then disappear.

Would appreciate any tips, as I am on a 27 hour shift in the neonatal

Re: [slim] Whole house audio but I need a controller

2008-01-27 Thread shawkie

I'm making quite good progress. I'm using Sqlite for my database engine
which is convenient at the moment as I can just pull it straight of the
NAS box. Moving and renaming the artwork is more of a problem. I guess
that I could write a database export plug-in for SqueezeCenter at some
point that takes care of it all?

At the moment I've only written a simple album browser although it
already has 8 different views and can easily have about 4 different
sort orders. And its pretty fast. The menu at the bottom will be kind
of dynamic. The space at the top is for the main toolbar (Now
Playing, Music Library, Internet Radio, etc.). The space at the
bottom is for play controls (Play, Pause, etc.). Clickable items
are at least 80x50 pixels so you can just about use a finger instead of
a sylus. Its also designed to be easily navigated using just the
direction pad.

*BLUSHING* Uhmm I think so :-)

Point is; I managed to create a query in which SC returns all albums
including the Various artist albums. I have a few albums on which one
performing guest artist makes SC clasiffy the album as Various Artist

What the script technically does is; Sort the various artist by Artist.
The shortest artist name is the Album Artist, If this album artist
performs more then half of the song, the Various Artist is changed into
the Album Artist. After all various artist albums are processed the
actual output is created.

So, the big question here is; Does it do the job well? We did a lot of
testing and it seems to do it ok but please let me know if this really
is the case.

Weren't they supposed to make plugins more user-friendly in 7.0? Or

Frank, nice update the album tracks are now sorted correctly. One small
cosmetic improvement could be to line up the least significant digit
 of the track names.

 Instead of

 9 - trackname
 10 - trackname

What free utility are you guys using to generate .pdf file? I'm using
PDF Creator 0.95. The page display beautifully within the IE7, but the
resulting .pdf file ends up with some blank pages and page breaks in
the wrong places. This is visible in the print preview and in the
resulting .pdf file. I use the option to print to the pseudo PDFCreator
printer to create the .pdf file. I tried it running ACC with the page
break option checked and unchecked, but got the same result. Any
 suggestions?

 Thanks...

Edit: One more thing. The track count is right, but the album count
that is displayed after ACC runs is way off.

Thx for the feedback. Good tip on addind a space char. Will add it in
the next update.

The problem with blank pages is related to the ACC printseperator
function. Based on a number of criteria (like maximum tracks on a page
and maximum albums on a page etc) it determines whether to insert a
print page seperator. This is not visible in the browser but only in
the print preview (or PDF). In the help screen there are some tips on
how to improve the seperation; lessen the page margins will probably do
the trick here. Can you test this? If it does not work, can you send me
two example pdf pages? I can then 'tune' the print seperation function
with that.

Re: [slim] Plugins - how to?

2008-01-27 Thread bpa

AFAICT the announcement script is not a plugin but a script you run when
you want an announcement to appear on an SB display.

It uses the CLI interface to put a message on the screen and so you
should run this script when the event you want to announce has happened
- e.g mail arrived.

The Plugin architecture has been improved in SC 7.0 with proper
standardised organisation of a plugin package - I think additional
functionality to assist the installation plugins was postponed until
after 7.0 was released.

Hi Terry,

Can you disable line 489 in the AlbumCatalogCreator-V1.hta file and
test if this makes a difference?

You can either remove it or put an ' character in front of the line to

[slim] Slacker Error Message

2008-01-27 Thread btcompute

Hi,

From time to time, while listening to a Slacker station (saved in
favorites) through SC7 and my SB3, the music stops abruptly and I get
the following error message in SqueezeCenter:
You have logged in on another device, press play to start

This occurs with my having touched anything on my PC or the SB3.

Pressing play does not do any good. I seem to need to shut down SC7 and
restart to clear the eror and play the station again.

Has anyone experienced this?
Any thoughts on why it occurs?

I'm using SqueezeCenter Version: 7.0 - 16473 - Windows XP - EN -
cp1252

Thanks,

Brian

can’t open the page “http://localhost:9000/” because it could not

If I go to just 'http://localhost' I get my default start page so I

Could this have something to do with incorrect privileges??

I see that you have posted two separate threads on the same topic. Some
of the questions I asked in my reply to your other post are answered
here.

Do you have a bootable backup? (It's always a good thing to have before
a major upgrade). If so, it might be useful to compare permissions for
SS and its package contents on the two drives to see if there is a
difference, or if there are any visible differences. You could always
see if removing slimserver preferences helped, though I would guess
not.

Define doesn't work.

What happens when you look at the System Preferences and the SlimServer
preference pane.

I seem to remember that some people had issues with getting SS to start
if it was set to start on boot.

We certainly need to know how SS is set up, what happens if you start
or stop it manually, etc.

What kind of update did you do, from 10.5.0 to 10.5.1 or something
else? What version of SS? Did it work before the update?

What about firewall issues?

2008-01-27 Thread Eric Seaberg

You're doing it correctly by entering a manual address, i.e.
192.168.1.50. Why not set it to 192.168.1.100 and enter the router
address (I assume it's 192.168.1.1) and subnet 255.255.255.0.

The router is smart enough to 'see' that there's something at .100 and
should bypass it for any other devices.

I uninstalled SlimCenter 7 (build 2008-01-26), installed SlimServer
6.5.4 and the response is infinitely faster - nearly instantaneous.
Thanks for the fast, accurate response. I guess that SlimCenter 7
isn't quite ready for prime-time.

While I thought that SlimCenter 7 was almost approaching the
'tolerable' designation, its absolutely horrible that I have to revert
to 6.5.4's interface to get this to work correctly. Man this interface
is terrible. :)

Hasn't anyone developed an interface that is a clone of those
Internet-enabled touchscreen jukeboxes in bars? Those things are
great, even senior citizens can find their favorite big band recordings
from back in the day without problem. I'd love to hang a 17 LCD on the
wall, wire it to my SlimServer, and use it as a touchscreen interface
while entertaining.

Re: [slim] Wireless Signal with (2) Squeezebox V1s

2008-01-27 Thread buck

Well, I opened it up and took a look. All connections appeared OK, but
I reseated the antenna lead anyhow. No luck. I then removed the
wireless LAN PC Card and started the SB. I next reinserted the PC Card
and restarted. No luck.
Shucks.
Anyone else have any ideas? Does anyone know if any other PC LAN cards
are acceptable? Are they available as replacement parts through Slim
Devices/Logitech?

Thanks again!

Re: [slim] OSX Leopard and start server woes

2008-01-27 Thread mmg_fan

What kind of update did you do, from 10.5.0 to 10.5.1 or something else?

I had 10.5.1 installed...it was a software update (under apple menu)

What version of SS?
6.5.4 set to automatically start when I log in

Did it work before the update?
Yes, no problems!

What about firewall issues?
As a result of the update also had to reset my router settings, so
perhaps that is part of the issue..wil check.

[slim] Attn: Logitech/Slim Devices - Amp Product suggeston (and POLL)

2008-01-27 Thread EnochLight

A poll associated with this post was created, to vote and see the
results, please visit http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=42805

Question: Would you buy a Slim Devices/Logitech branded amp?

- YES!
- NO!

After searching for the perfect companion amp for my Squeezeboxes (I
have two version 3's) and my soon to be Duet, I've come to wonder if
anyone here would be interested in seeing Slim Devices/Logitech release
a companion amp for their own product?

I mean, all most people seem to want is a medium-to-high powered amp
that automagically turns on and off along with the Squeezebox, as well
as offer some sort of basic tone control (bass and tone).

All multimedia receivers are overkill, and most amps like the T-Amp and
the popular ones by Audio Source are either too under-powered (T-Amp) or
too big (Audio Source) and none possess basic tone control, making the
control over bass and tone in your music a pain (anyone try finding a
decent equalizer lately)?

All I'm saying is, if Logitech/Slim would design and sell an amp that
pushed at least 50 watts RMS per channel (preferably 75-100 watts per
channel), had auto on/off, was a compact size and elegant in design
like the Squeezeboxes, and just bass/tone control would be a massive
bonus. It doesn't need to be audiophile grade, just a decent offering.
I'd easily pay $200-$300 for something like that.

Am I alone?

Wireless cards in these things do fail. I had a similar situation
with slightly different facts. In my case, my 2nd SB had basically the
same high level of signal as my other unit -- but was constantly losing
signal and connection. I tested identical locations with the same
effect.I sent it in, explained the problem -- and it was fixed
under warranty. Works fine again, no issues. I have had many many
802.11 products over the years, and not one has failed.I found it
strange the SB did in this manner -- and am hoping this is not a weak
point in the product family. I have grown to love them so much, I
don't want them breaking on me every year. So far my other unit has
not a hitch.

Anyways, suspect yours may be out of warranty -- so it may not be
cost-effective to fix it vs replace it. You can call them, and possibly
get an estimate?

Others may have significantly better advise..so keep looking at this
thread.Good luck.

I might buy a couple more Squeezebox type systems, but my house has
nearly reached saturation for music-players. Since the house isn't
getting bigger, that means I think future growth for SD/Logitech needs
to be in other areas. The two that spring to mind are:

video jukebox: a DVR type of system that is as easy to setup and use
while still retaining the flexibility of Squeezecenter. On the one
hand, that's a tall order and a tight market full of pretty good
players. On the other, none of those players has won my money yet...
still on the trial DVR from the local cable company.

picture frame: this seems like an obvious gimme, given the lame and
expensive level of product that's out there now. The hardware I've seen
isn't bad, just kind of ugly... but there's a crying need for server
software that can handle photo formatting and presentation over
wireless. SD cards? USB cables? XP-only desktop apps? Please.

I could see them going to Bould and having them package a inexpensive
digital amp in a case that looks just like the receiver. But I really
don't see many of their customers paying $300 for it. At maybe half
that price some people might buy it just for the matching styling.

Since the Logitech strategy lately appears to be aimed in the direction
of Sonos and their type of customer, I think it's a pretty safe bet that
you can expect a receiver with a built in amp. Probably something more
in the 30-50 watt at 8 Ohm range, though. Much more than that and it
would be too big and too expensive for this market.

Thanks for the reply! I obtained this unit off of ebay for a fairly
good price. I think it would be cost-effective in this case to fix it.
I have confirmed that it is the Wireless PC Card. I swapped it out
with the one in my other Squeezebox and it worked flawlessly. Just to
check, I put the one from the low signal unit in my original and got
the low signal results.
I just put in a request for information to Slim Devices regarding the
availability of the Wireless PC Card. I'll be hoping for goog news.
Cross your fingers for me! :-)

Thanks again for the replys!

There's no shortage in good amplifier's on the market ?
What would logitech's unique selling point be ?

Maybe if such an amp could be controlled by SC and therefore the
Controller, volume tone controls/eq and on/off input switching etc.

Integration would be the only area to exploit to make a difference.
I would not buy a switching( in 90% cases wrongly labeled as digital
amp's) amp for example, maybe to the kitchen.

But then Powered speakers make much more sense to me.

So, soon in my kitchen there will be some kind of powered speaker to
companion a duet.

Powered speakers are relativly rare, maybe a team up with a respected
speaker brand.

It should be. I'd be interested to know what went wrong in the first try. Would

Me too... and Logitech are already rather good at making these.
Some sort of player/with detachable powered speakers that could
possibly be used as a boombox/small hifi/clock radio (but will need
display for this) is a much more likely future product imho.
