Besides getting power to them, you're also likely to have a pretty long
run of unbalanced line level cable from the SB to the active ceiling
speakers, which is likely to pick up a hum. You could avoid this with
baluns at each end.

We recently re-did our kitchen and put Polk RC60i speakers in the
ceiling. They are inexpensive and sound fine for background music,
although they are weak on the bass end of things. At some point I will
probably look into either (a) replacing them with 8" speakers or (b)
adding a subwoofer.

If you want a great AM/FM Tuner in the bargain check out Tivoli. I have
had a Model 2 with an SB2 in the bedroom for a couple years:

http://www.tivoliaudio.com/product.php?productid=144&cat=262&page=1

The form factor is nice and there are several finishes. You can also
add a sub and CD player later and it can run off DC.

Maybe. But I suspect something using the command line interface (CLI)

AFAIK it works on both, below is taken from the Squeezecenter

digital outputs can be disabled. Disabling the outputs may cause an
audible pop or noise in some receivers. 'Option Disable outputs when

What I don't understand is that I was led to believe that the XP

A poll associated with this post was created, to vote and see the
results, please visit http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=42805

Question: Would you buy a Slim Devices/Logitech branded amp?

- YES!
- NO!

Have just come across this:

http://www.smarthouse.com.au/Reviews/iPods_And_Portable_Players/L2E6K2Q6

It appears to be part of a Cyrus offshoot, but their main website has
no details at all.

But Cyruslink is explained here:

http://www.automatedhome.co.uk/New-Products/Cyruslink.html

A good picture is here:

http://www.superfi.co.uk/index.cfm/page/moreinfo.cfm/Product_ID/3156

With Cyrus connections the sound could be expected to be pretty good.
Has anyone heard them - or even seen them?

[slim] Feature Request - Connect to FQDN with access control

2008-01-31 Thread Sike

Hi

This is a feature request for something that I have been working around
for years.

I live in a couple of locations, due to work and have a couple of
friends who i have persuaded to buy Squeezeboxes. As we Swissies are
green (or maybe just cheap..) I let everybody connect to my server for
music/radio/etc .. this also solves the problem of syncing the whole
collection to my other dwellings..

What I wanted to do is have one central Squeezeserver and connect all
squeezeboxes to that server. This works fine for all of the
squeezeboxes in the house with the server, but the challenge was to get
all of the external players to work.

As I and most of my friends use Cablecom (Cable internet) the IP rarly
changes (only if you have a power outage for longer than 10mins) after
trying out VPN, which requires a PC to run or have some router with VPN
capibilities, which usualy crash. As i did not want to invest in Cisco
PIX/ASA boxes for VPNing (plus all of that overhead...) I went for a
differnt aproach.

I bought a WRAP device (www.pcengines.com) and installed m0n0wall on it
and run it as my main router where the Squeezeserver is. I have set up
NAT with rules for every location to only allow port 9000 and 3483 to
connect to the Squeezeserver. This works wonderfuly!! Songs start at
the remote locations neary as fast as at home.

The only drawback is that when there is a power outage, i have to redo
some of the rules. The other issue is that this can not be done with
XDSL which dynamic IPs that change every day.

What would be great is to have the possibilty to enter a FQDN instead
of just an IP for the Squeezeserver. This would not solve the problems
for XDSL.. but if the "server IP" changes, all of the remote
Squeezeboxes would not have to change the IP.

My second request would to have built in security for squeezeboxes. You
could then enter a password on the Squeezebox and just NAT all traffic
from any location to ports 9000 and 3483..

So .. howaboutit?

Sike

I always wondered whether anybody would come up with a solution for the
SqueezeBox _Controller_. It's an open Linux platform. You could use it as the
gateway to the remote server, using SSH tunneling or openvpn or something...
Then your SB would only have to connect to the controller, which in turn
connected to the server to feed your player... Hm...

I doubt this will be feasible as the SB's memory and CPU is close to fully
loaded. But feel free to submit an enhancement request at bugs.slimdevices.com
(if there isn't one for this already). The request sounds reasonable, and
future devices might have more resources.

I'm not an audiophile - I don't have the vocabulary to describe like a

Probably not fair to compare the A2 systems directly ($199 vs $350)
directly. Still, a short assessment. The Aego M's are brighter, not
as balanced, but pump out amazing sound for the size and price. You
have to adjust the subwoofer down a bit unless you are a rocker. The
Audioengine 5's are a nice value. can't speak to the 2's. Had the 5's
before the 2's came out. More finesse with the Audioengines. Both are
speakers that do extremely well in their price rangedon't expect
studio reference experiences...just put em in the right environment and
just smile when your friends rave.

I'm doing some tests with resizing.

Now I see if I use maximum jpeg quality in Adobe Photoshop (12) the
result is the best. The filesize is ~350KB.

When I use medium quality (5) the filesize is ~80KB.

I use the skin 'fishbone'. I load all the thumbnails when I browse
through the albums.

I have sometimes more than hundred albums in one page. Will a larger
thumbnail i.e. 350-80KB slow it down?

Will higher quality thumbnails slow rendering?

SlimServer is connected on a Gigabit connection.

Does SlimServer cache thumbnails?

Question 2:

the living room, and music from laptop 2 to the SB receiver upstairs?

100x0.35MB = 35MB

35MB of images, and this is for 100, not hundred_s_. That's not only slowing
down because you have to download them, but because the browser has to handle
them as well.

Have a look at erland's plugins - there is a multilibrary one. Combine

generally recommend having a single library though - you could have a

The images size doesn't matter that much, as resized versions are cached on
SC7. But if you really want to display _hundreds_ of albums, the transfer of
hundreds of files will take its time. And processing the images before caching
them will also need considerable CPU power and memory.

Most of my artwork files are below 300x300 pixels. I only use them for on
screen display.

To answer your explicit questions, yes, it will do everything you want
as described above assuming you run a copy of SlimServer on each
laptop. Things get more complicated when you want one SlimServer to
serve it all. If that's the case you'll need Erland's plugins as Adam
pointed out.

Re: [slim] Empty playlists every day

2008-01-31 Thread Siduhe

Are these .m3u playlists you have created yourself, or are these ITunes
or similar created playlists?

Quick check, if you open up the playlist file (assuming is is a
self-created .m3u or .pls file) in a text editor like Notepad or
Editpad, is the file path to your music the same as the path that
Slimserver follows to your music library? If the playlist says
"..song.mp3" or "d:/Music/song.mp3" but your Music Library folder entry
in Slimserver is "//server/Music/song.mp3", it won't pick up the songs
in the playlists.

Easy to fix if so, just find/replace the relevant text so that it
follows the Slimserver naming convention.

If the file path is the same, could be a permissions issue - can you
describe your set up a bit more (OS, network/storage structure, how
playlists are created etc).

Re: [slim] Large music library = slow Slimserver??

2008-01-31 Thread ralphpnj

It's been a while since I've added anything to this thread so here is an
update on some changes that I've made my configuration and how things
are working out.

First, I picked up the following new hardware:

1) a Dell Inspiron 530S computer (it's the slim version of the Inspiron
530) without a monitor.

2) A IOGEAR kvm switch so that I can use the Inspiron along with my
existing Dell Dimension 4600 computer.

3) A Drobo storage robot which I then loaded with four 750GB Seagate
sata hard drives.

I've configured the hardware as follows:

1) My old Dell Dimension 4600 is now used exclusively as a dedicated
server running SlimServer 6.5.4

2) The Drobo is connected to the Dell Dimension 4600 via USB 2.0

3) The Dell Inspiron 530S is now my "main" computer on which I do all
my computer related work, e.g. email, web surfing, downloading, ripping
CDs, etc. Note: any new music which I want to add to my music library is
first prepared on the Inspiron and then transfered to the Dimension 4600
via my network (both computers are connected to my router via CAT5
cable).

After I got the Drobo I transfered my entire music library, which was
spread across 4 external USB hard drives, over the course of several
days onto the Drobo. I set up the directory structure on the Drobo as
follows:

F:\Drobo Music\Classical
F:\Drobo Music\Christmas
F:\Drobo Music\Jazz
F:\Drobo Music\Other
F:\Drobo Music\Rock

That's it, just five subdirectories for all my music. Each CD or
multi-CD set gets it's own subdirectory within one of five main music
directories. Several of the five main music directories are quite large
(the "jazz" directory has about 1,700 subdirectories, or "albums" in it)
while some are fairly small (the "other" directory has about 10 items in
it).

So how is this new setup working out? Glad you asked.

So far, so good.

One of the reasons that I picked up a new computer is that I feel that
my old Dell is reaching the end of it's life cycle and since I'm
presently living in the Netherlands until at least early next year, I
didn't want to have to buy a new computer in Europe. I bought the new
Dell and the Drobo while I was back in the US for the Christmas
holidays and carried them both back in my luggage which, by the way,
was way overweight.

As far as the problems I was experiencing (as outlined in the first
post of this thread) here's a rundown on what's changed and what's
not.

> The response of the server to various commands from any of the
> Squeezeboxes or the Transporter can vary from reasonably fast to
> achingly slow. For example, when adding a new "album" to the library I
> use the "browse" command to search through the music folders until I

> jazz/rock/classical subfolder level to the album I am trying to add to
> the music library.

This slow response behavior is somewhat better but still not perfect. I
can now browse thru my music folder quite bit faster but it still
hesitates after reaching one of the main music subfolders, i.e. the
"jazz" subfolder. However, I now do not have to go through the process
twice, as stated above.

> This the major problem but at other times the server will momentarily
> stop playing, particularly if there is a heavy load being placed on my

This doesn't happen any more since the computer is only running
SlimServer and nothing else.

The response to the search command is greatly improved.

> The web Slimserver interface runs very slowly will not even display my
> library if the browse function is set for "albums", however, it will

The SlimServer interface still runs rather slowly and still will not
display "albums" or "songs". I will most likely upgrade the server to
SlimCenter 7.0 once the official version is released.

Just for the record, the Drobo works great and since it is
automatically "backing up" my music library I no longer have to worry
about one of the external hard drives failing and me losing that part
of my music library.

Re: [slim] Squeezebox & Multiple Libraries

2008-01-31 Thread Siduhe

I think you have a fundamental design decision to make. What you want
to do can be achieved a couple of different ways and there are
pros/cons of each:

Option 1. Run Slimserver on a single machine but give it access to all
the music stored on each laptop (you can put symbolic links into a top
level music folder and Slimserver will read all the music stored in the
folders which are linked to the top level one). I think this will work
if the laptops can access each others music as if they were a network
drive.

You then have one big library of all your music, and there is a Multi
Library plugin (mentioned already) which will allow you just to see
your own music. However, the players will only work if Slimserver on
the single laptop is switched on.

Option 2. Install Slimserver on each machine that has music, and put
only the music in that box into the Library. Then use something like
the ServerSwitcher plugin (see 'here'
to swap each player between the different instances of Slimserver as you
need to. In theory, that is. Never tried it myself.

IMHO the time and inconvenience of trying to work out where any
individual bit of music is when you want to listen to it makes pooling
it in a single place the easier option, but I can see why it would work
for you to keep all these separate.

My better half and I have about 9000 tracks which exist under seperate
top level folders on an old Dell PC. Slimserver reads both and gives
us a combined library, but we use Multi Library and filters in MusicIP
to seperate out our music when we only want to listen to our own.
We've been together for long enough (and plan to stay together for a
while more) that it's been worth it to combine the two like this.

Can I also throw in an option 3, depending on your broadband speed and
number/size of files? Upload all your music to Mp3tunes.com and you
can then access it via Squeezenetwork without the need to run
Slimserver at all...

Re: [slim] Empty playlists every day

2008-01-31 Thread Siduhe

If you do a full clear and rescan every day, my understanding is that
Slimserver completely re-writes its database and forgets about all the
files which existed in your Now Playing playlist. So it will be empty
every day regardless of the maintain client playlist settings.

There were changes to scanning behaviour around the time of 6.5.3/6.5.4
which may have introduced this IIRC.

Maybe try a regular scan for new music only, which shouldn't affect
links to existing files in the database?

[slim] Feature suggestion: Going to music folder from songinfo

2008-01-31 Thread lemppari

Hi,
It would be a nice feature to be able to go to the music folder which
contains the file from the songinfo screen. In my classical music
collection one cd often contains many composers and works and since I
use the work as the album tag I cannot easily access other works on
that particular cd. If I could access the music folder from the
songinfo screen it would provide a "quick" link to the other works on
that album.

Cheers,

Kari

[slim] music folder on mapped networked drive?

2008-01-31 Thread grimholtz

Hi,

I have my music folder on a mapped networked drive (z:\music). After
telling SlimServer to scan z:\music, no albums/artists/genres/etc
appear in SlimServer. It's as if SlimServer either can't access the
drive or doesn't find any music there.

The PC running SlimServer can access z:\music through file explorer
just fine. I've tried reinstalled SlimServer but got the same results.

What am I doing wrong?

[slim] New FW, old SS questions

2008-01-31 Thread bigfool1956

I've got SS running on my QNAP which was delivered in December last year

It strikes me as very simple to install SC7 on my PC, connect my TP to

Will I be constantly be requested/required to downgrade the FW?

second that, very good suggestion. And, while we are at that, how about
considering making any entry in the song info menu 'drillable' down
further. For example, track name. Sometimes, I want to compare
performance of several artists on a given piece - usually jazz
standards. So, if I'm listening to 'Almost blue' performed by Diana
Krall, I'd like to be able to compare it to how her husband did it :).
Right now 'lazy search' is the most effective way to do it, but it
would be nice to be able to just keep going to the right from the track
name.

BTW, I noticed it now (SC 7) works for year tag - thanks.

Check permissions. If your SlimServer is running as a service you either have
to allow anonymous read access on the share, or have the service run as a user
who has permissions to access that share.

If I recall correctly, SS6 was still getting last minute bug fixes right
up to the day that transporters were available in stores. I'd expect SC7

Officially, you should always run a matched firmware/slimserver version

Yes, the server on the NAS will downgrade the firmware to match its

However, I have seen cases where aliases do work. I recall one user

Re: [slim] Slimserver Cuts Out

2008-01-31 Thread Madgester

I use slimserver with a PC hard wired to the router.

Also, I live in a detached house so the neighbour's shouldn't be
interfering.

I've just allocated a specific IP address so I'll give that a go.

Then I'll change the channel.

Thanks for your help I'll keep you posted.

Re: [slim] More than one music folder

2008-01-31 Thread Rick B .

Once you go to multiple drives you also have the problem of how to deal
with adding new albums by artists for which you already have albums by.
If Drive A is full then you would need a new artist folder in Drive B.
But then you don't have all of the albums by one artist in the same
folder.

I solved it by making Drive A hold artists A to L and drive B hold
artists M to Z. Of course one day I may need to split into 3!

Re: [slim] Connection help, please

2008-01-31 Thread Mark Lanctot

It doesn't matter if it can be undone, it'll just turn inactive if
there's no traffic to pass from the USB connection on to the Ethernet
connection.

Windows calls bridging "Internet Connection Sharing" or ICS. I think
this can be done from within Settings - Network. You highlight both
connections and activate ICS. Unfortunately Sprint's software may
prevent you from doing this, it may not present the USB Internet
connection as a standard USB networking connection or it may disable
ICS entirely.

Try it from within the Windows environment first and see if it lets
you. If it won't, call Sprint, ask them how to do it and act surprised
that they disabled a part of your computer you paid for (when you bought
a Windows license).

I've tagged all my music according to the instructions in the WiKi

But still i do get two different problems running your nice

First off:
AC/DC the tag is as that but still I get 2 different Artists ACDC and
AC DC.

Then the other:
Some albums are showing up as 1 Album/song so an album with 12 songs
will show up as 12 albums

If it's squeezecenter 7, then copy c:\documents and settings\all
users\squeezecenter\*.pref files and subfolders to the new machine. Please
note that the file contains some file paths. If the new system has a
different folder/disk structure you'll very likely have to manually set
them before SC can start.

I'm not at the computer, I assume these pref files are text based so

Mike,

When this happens does SC7 or SS6.5.x show one album or multiple albums
as well.

Check the track tags. If the tracks list as 1 then 2 then 3/12 then 4
then 5/12 then this can cause this to happen.

No, Notepad will not do. The file uses Linux style line endings. Use
wordpad instead (save as text only!) or do yourself a favour and get a
decent text editor like eg. pspad (freeware).

Just install them as you used to install them. Then make sure you get the

[slim] "Smart" Re-buffering?

My favorite radio station tends to drop its feed every so often, causing
my SB to display "Rebuffering...47%" or similar. Mostly, it will stay

Re: [slim] Harmony Remote and Power Cycling SB3

2008-01-31 Thread SteveEast

My 659 doesn't show this problem either.

To my untrained eye, it looks like your 659 is sending a pause and
power toggle when you switch the SB off. Since the SB was already
paused, that will act like a play command.

I suggest you check the Harmony setup for the appropriate activity. It
sounds like the enter/leave activity stuff is set up to do more than
just toggle the power.

Activities/(Whatever)Settings/Review the Settings/Yes, but I want to
add more control...

then plough through to the custom options screen for the activity.

[slim] Squeeze Center file access

I have Squeeze center set up on my Windows Desktop and I have a

spinning up occasionally with SqueezeCenter. For what other reason would

I'll do some checks on the AC/DC problem which can either be two
things: 1. The way it is stored in the DB or 2. The '/' is causing
problems. I'll get back on this one.

For the second problem; This can have the following reasons:
1. The albumname tag is different among the album tracks (a difference
in case is enough to have SC/SS it stored as different albums
2. On an album with multiple track the albumnames are identical for
every cd (so no CD number in albumname) AND the Disc tag is not used
either.

So most often this is a tagging issue. Can you confirm this?

The way Slim Devices works, in regards to SqueezeCenter (or SlimServer
before it) is quite... "unique".. compared to other software companies.
The only other experience I have ever had with beta testing software on
a regular basis has been with a Swedish company called Propellerhead and
with Adobe, and both of those companies work in the exact opposite
fashion of how Slim works.

Not saying either way is better or worse, just.. "different".. ;-P

The problem is that they aren't really a software company. If you want to
draw a comparison I would suggest comparing to driver manufacturers for your
NIC, mouse, motherboard, etc.

No the albumname are identical, and as far as SS it's okey just one
album, some of the albums have diffrent disc number.

I've been using TAG&rename and the option F10 get tags from Amazon

Yes! And synchronization of SliMP3s even has been improved a lot. You'll
be able to use Pandora and Slacker on your SliMP3. Development hasn't
ceased.

> Are there any gotchas that I need to be aware off?

Go with SC7. It's still not officially released and everything, but the
last official build 6.5.4 has some issues with Leopard. And SC7 is the
best base for your next 8-10 years :-)
