By default that's how the albums are sorted, but if you set up the
ALBUMSORT tag, you can arrange it any way you like.

My own ALBUMSORT tags are formatted as " ".
That way when scrolling through the album list, they are ordered by
artist, then in chronological order of release.

My Duet hasn't arrived yet, but this is my main concern with the
controller functionality. I have a Zen Vision:M, which can toggle
between the main list and an alphabet menu (on the right edge of the
display) when scrolling.
example image here:
http://www.everythingusb.com/images/list/creativevisionalbummatrix.jpg

This is a much more precise method for moving rapidly through the
library. I hope the Duet's method works well but I very much dislike
the iPod spin method of acceleration - sore thumb included.

Re: [slim] Can't connect SB to SC

2008-03-07 Thread frazzmac

Thanks for all the suggestions guys - much appreciated. Here's an
update...

I can't see any option in the AP for an isolation feature - that was
one thought I had a couple of days ago. As you say, that wouldn't
explain why it does work for brief periods.

No, tracert and ping don't work from PC to SB, but then I've never
tried it when I get brief connectivity.

I've monitored signal strength on the SB and it stays about 80%
continuously (I had previously replaced the antenna on the AP as I was
having signal strength issues and doing so made a big difference).

Have played about with channels too...doesn't seem to make any
difference. There are a couple of other networks in the area though, so
I will double check what channels they are on and set mine
appropriately.

And finally, I hard-wired the SB to the PC and it works perfectly!
Fortunately I can run that cable permanently so I will go with this
solution for the moment.

I'll spend a little bit more time on it, but then I'll use the SB for
what it was meant for, enjoying music, and stop playing at being a
network engineer...

Thanks,

Fraser

Re: [slim] How much power does the squeezebox draw while on standby

2008-03-07 Thread amorphia

Thanks all! So about a tenth of a low wattage light bulb. Not much but
it all adds up.

(I am absolutely not a patriot but) I have never understood why other
contries, like the one I currently live in, don't follow the UK's fine
example of having off switches as standard next to wall sockets. Then I
wouldn't need to get a strip with an off button, which is what I will
probably do.

Till then I am just threatening retaliation: every time she unplugs the
squeezebox I am going to unplug her clock radio so she has to reset the
time.

By the way to highlight global warming I have a campaign to change the
SI unit for energy to polar bears. I haven't yet worked out how many
polar bears 4 to 5 watts is but it's probably like a polar bear baby's
little toe or something.

Cheers,

Ben

FYI
You can get softsqueeze from the "extra" menu in Squeezecenter or
download it from http://softsqueeze.sourceforge.net

Softsqueeze is IMHO the best soft to use with Squeezecenter on your
computer, but you could also use your favorite player, like winamp,
enter the url to your squeezecenter: http://127.0.0.1:9000/stream.mp3
and then control your winamp from the squeezecenter like any other
player ..

- Yes
- Yes but with minor issues
- No
- It does not work at all

If I view the output in MSword it works fine on the machine that
slimserver is on but opening it on another machine results in the
majority of the album art not to be displayed. Is this to be expected
due to the album art not being embedded and is linked? Is there a way
to embed the album art in a word document?

Thought it was strange though that some of the art is displayed (at a
guess i'd say about 5%)

If you open the .html file in word then I guess most of the album art
will not display correctly when opened from a different computer than
from which ACC was executed from. This is because of all the links to
the actual albumart files. The path to the album art should be exactly
the same on both computers for it to display ok on both computers.

There are two things you can do about it;
1. Print the catalog to a PDF file using a (free) PDF printer.
2. Open the generated .MHT file in Word and save it as word file. The
.MHT is a IE archive file. It will be much larger than a PDF file but
it does its job.

Please note that Office 2007 (and i think 2003 also) use there own HTML
renderer (not IE) and does not support i.e. the gradient background
behind the artist/album names. In Word this will be solid gray.

Hope this is an answer to your question?

I'm wondering about that as well. I updated my SBC this morning, then

So are you guys just working feverishly to update the SBC with new

It will always say there's an update available even if it's the one you
already have installed.
If there really is an update available the controller will prompt you
to do the update. There's no need to go to the update screen unless you
want to manually install an update from an SD card or force a
reinstallation of the current firmware.

[slim] Fast Forward Not Working in 7.0 for .WAV

2008-03-07 Thread epicurean

I was running a previous version of Slimserver. Fast Forward and Rewind
worked just fine for .WAV files.

I upgraded to 7.0 on my XP Professional laptop and now these features
do not work for .WAV files. The unit does not respond when holding down
the FWD or REW keys when it is playing a .WAV. I tested it with an MP3
and it appears to work.

Anyone know what's happening here?

I tend to listen to uncompressed and lossless compressed music. It will
be a real drag to not be able to FF around these tracks, especially when
it was working in a previous version. I listen almost exclusively to dj
mixes that are hours long and i like to start them in the middle. Now
i'm forced to listen from the beginning always. This will totally kill
the user experience for me.

HOPEFULLY this is just a bug and not a deliberate removal of
functionality. Please advise. Thank you.

[slim] Controller can't connect via wireless

2008-03-07 Thread Balthazar_B

Just received my Duet set yesterday and have experienced a couple of
problems (the other will be in the Linux forum). The first major
problem is that the Controller is not able to see my wireless network
SSID (or connect to it if I manually enter it via Other Network). I'd
be pulling my hair out if I had any.

A few facts to start:

1) I'm using a Cisco 1240AG AP with a VERY strong signal (perhaps the
cause of my hair loss?). I've got it operating on its G radio, with
AES/CCM ciphers. I'm on a slightly older version of Cisco's IOS
sofware (12.3(8)JA2). I can post a sanitized version of my AP config
if requested.

2) My SB3s have had no problem connecting to the wireless network;
occasionally, I've had issues with other devices (e.g., the odd laptop)
that has required updating its network drivers.

3) While trying to connect last night, my network's SSID came up for
just an instant on the Controller, then disappeared before I could
complete the connection.

4) The Controller detects a couple of much weaker SSIDs in my
neighborhood, so I know it's not "blind".

Where should I go from here? Suggestions?

Thanks to all!

[slim] Duet - Alarm not working

2008-03-07 Thread rdefelice

Just set up my duet last night, and I love it! However, I've noticed
that the alarm feature doesn't appear to be working for me. I'll
enable and set the time for the main alarm (not the weekday alarms), do
something else, then go to the alarm settings, and one of two things
will have happened:

1. the alarm time will be set to 00:00 as if I had never set it.
or
2. the alarm will show up as disabled.

Am I missing something, or is this feature just not finished yet, or am
I experiencing some kind of bug?

I'm guessing you might be connected to SqueezeNetwork rather than your local
SqueezeCenter instance. On the Duet choose the Music Sources menu option
and see if you can choose a different source.

[slim] Cannot customize the order of Podcasts or RSS

2008-03-07 Thread thing-fish

In SlimServer, I was able to rearrange the order of Podcasts or RSS
feeds. It was a pain: if I found a new RSS feed I wanted to come
first, I had to paste it in the first box, paste what used to be in the
first box into the second, second to third, etc. Same with Podcasts.

While I am enjoying SqueezeCenter (THANK YOU PEOPLE for the local
Rhapsody integration. Not having to go to SqueezeNetwork itself = my
family using Squeezebox more and probably getting a 2nd one, mixing
Rhapsody and local content in the same playlist is GREAT), it is
actually kind of important to me to be able to resequence these and
unless I'm missing something, there's no way to do it at all.

Should I file a bug/feature request or is this post sufficient? Also,
does this get stored in a file or database table somewhere so that I
can change it in the meantime?

thanks much!

Check your music source. Home > Settings > Music Source. It's
possible that you have your music source set to SqueezeNetwork rather
than SqueezeCenter.

With SC7, if you provide your SN login information, you should be able
to access all of the SN services, in addition to your local music.

If your computer's name isn't listed, check that SC7 is running, and
that it isn't blocked by a firewall (even if you had SlimServer
working, with the name change you might have to retrain your firewall).

Not really, it'll upgrade/downgrade as appropriate. It just takes a
minute or so.

I did this for months as I tested SC7 nightlies on another PC, just
like you want to do. I also used the same music library, I just had
the second machine running SC7 read the music library via file sharing
from the first machine running SS 6.5.4. Seamless.

I've connected via both interfaces, but none of my music folders show

recognize all music chosen and played via the SqueezeCenter interface
on my pc and I can even pause/stop these files via the handheld.

Re: [slim] How much power does the squeezebox draw while on standby

2008-03-07 Thread AndrueC

I use electronic timers to switch stuff off. You can set them up to give
different times at the weekend. The timers themselves draw a little
current but judging from how cool they feel it's probably a miniscule
amount.

I have a power meter in my lounge and it's kind of cool to leave for
work in the morning and see it displaying 0.00 :)

In my case switching off my server, router, AV stuff (including Sky+
satellite PVR) saves me 130w an hour for 80 hours a week. That's 10.4
units a week which is around £80 a year.

You could also use this as an excuse to buy some kit. Get a cheap
laptop, fit a 24/7 hard drive in it and use that as a server. I did
that for a while and it reduces server power consumption quite
dramatically.

I have to tell you, I was delighted at how quickly I was able to switch
from SS6.5.4 to SC7.0. I run XUbuntu and just used Synaptic Package
manager, which de-installed SS and installed SC7. It brought in my 19k
tracks from MusicIP in about 45 minutes, and while it was doing that I
upgraded SoftSqueeze on the laptop and got the scrobbler and MusicIP
Mixer settings done. Then I installed the magnificent WeatherTime
plugin like I had on SS and restarted (which finally enabled
mixer-specific MusicIP, that was the one snag because I didn't know I
had to restart, and had to figure out how to restart). Total time, 60
minutes.

With that said, you certainly don't have anything to lose by putting
SqueezeCenter on another PC first, except that you're going to do
everything twice when you put it on your first PC anyway ;) I'm
delighted so far with the new stuff, it definitely solved a couple of
usability problems I had and the couple of quibbles I still have I
think can be easily achieved in future updates. Bravo.

But now I need to try to figure out how to deal with soundtracks and

Unable to run cabled (2 floors away). Signal strength OK. Can't ping.
I've tried deleting & reinstalling SC but no joy. I have a new router
but I believe it worked before with it. Can't see anything in router
setup that's causing the connection to drop. Have had problem for 2
weeks now. Would going back to SN6 fix it? Don't want to do this as I
like the Save Playlist from SB feature in SC7 but I have a sys that's
unusable at the moment. Any ideas pls?

hi Ryan-- your SqueezeCenter needs updating. I've put in fixes for
alarm since the version you report running.

Also FWIW, I've already checked in a few other fixes for alarm, e.g.,
setting an alarm in 12h mode or 24h mode, instead of 24h only as it is
now. Those will come in our next release, 7.0.1.

cheers,

The price of small UPSs is so cheap now you should get one instead of
buying another cheap surge protector.

What has probably happened is that the cheapo surge protector uses MOVs
to shunt the surges. MOVs breakdown a little each time they are called
to protect equipment and go bad after X number of hits. With all the
power issues it appears that your home gets, you are much better off
with a small UPS. The UPS will have better surge protection and the
reboots will go away because the SB2 will stay powered through hits and
outages.

Additionally the UPS is a small price to pay to protect your Heart,
Hearing, Speakers, and SB2!

I will do that too, thank you. But I have a question. What's the
right way to shut down SC? Last night when I was upgrading I saw that
there was a process that seemed to always keep SC running, and a
separate process that was actually SC. When I installed plug-ins I
killed the SC process and then it seemed to automatically restart. To
fully shut it down I assume I kill that restarting script, then kill
the server. But then how do I start it back up!

I could swear that there used to be a .pl in the past where I could
just say slimserver.pl stop or something, but I couldn't find the
equivalent last night. Please note that despite running Squeeze
products on FreeBSD or Xunbutu for like six years now, my skillz are
far from elite ;) Heck, I still don't even have MusicIP autostarting
or Squeeze dependent on it starting first; those rare times when I have
to reboot I have to go start it manually. Now that Squeeze doesn't
appear to have a dynamic plugin load I don't know *what* I'm going to
do with that situation (sharpen my skills, I guess, lol!)

Thanks for your help, Michael, looking forward to your response

I've been considering purchasing a small UPS for my Duet as well. I'm
subject to fairly frequent power flicker like MeSue.

I've used APC products in the past for computer hardware and found them

Are there audio component-specific UPSs out there? I'd be interested

My advice, DO NOT CUT YOUR POWER CORD!

Be smart and either drill a new bigger hole in the back by drilling two
holes large enough side by side and knock out the middle between the
holes or just enlarge the current hole.

Why chance creating a future problem by cutting the cord when a little
cabinet modification will get the job done. As long as it is on the
back, nobody is going to see your handy work anyway.

[slim] SBC with no album art

2008-03-07 Thread Mitch Harding
I currently don't have any album art for my music, so when I am
looking at lists of music on the SBC, each song has the large music
note icon to the left of it (where I assume the album art would
ordinarily be). Is there any way to have the SBC not display that
graphic (i.e. disable album art on the SBC), so that it can display
more songs on a given screen. I do a lot of scrolling within my Now
Playing list, and it would be cool if I could see more songs at once.

I'm guessing this is another enhancement request, but I didn't want to
open it if there was some way to do this that I was missing. Thanks!

[slim] Problems with importing

2008-03-07 Thread danco

I was attempting to import my playlists for specific BBC programs (not
stations) from the old AlienStream format to the new favorites.

It looks as though there is a bug in the import module, but I would be
glad if others can check the functionality.

Specifically, when I tried to import

/Users/danco/Friday Play.m3u

I got told there was an error in the import.

I tried replacing the space by \ followed by space, but still got an
error.

/Users/danco/FridayPlay imported ok.

So did

file://Users/danco/Friday Play.m3u

though it said "loading ..." for a noticeable time.

I am told that I got the syntax wrong there, and it should have been
(which I did not try) file:///...

which perhaps explains why file://... was so slow (even though it
worked in the end).

A space elsewhere in the path also caused the import to fail.

So it would seem that a space in the item to be imported causes
problems.

Ok, I've opened an enhancement request for this:
http://bugs.slimdevices.com/show_bug.cgi?id=7439

I encourage others to vote for this if you would also like to see it.
My proposal is that they replace the "Play All Songs" entry with an
"All Songs" entry. If you click the play button while that entry is
selected, it would play all songs by that artist. If you click on the
center button while that entry is selected, it would drill down and
list all songs by that artist.

[slim] Duet won't connect via wired

2008-03-07 Thread jowes

I'm a long time squeeze box owner, I have 3-4 slimp3s, 2 squeeze box 2s,
1 squeezebox 3 and I finally got my duet, so I'm no stranger to setting
these things up.

My new remote is sweet and can control all of the existing players no
problem.

The problem is the squeezebox player, which I've configured to connect
via wired, can't connect to my squeeze center. It sees it, but then it
fails saying it can't connect via my wireless network when I select it.
(Well yeah, I specifically told it not to use wireless.)

It then disappears from my network It "looks" like it dropped my wired
connection. Then later it shows up again.

It's listing a funny IP address for the player: 169.254.247.31, btw?
Does this mean it's dropped my wired connection and my remote is
talking directly to it via it's wireless?

A couple other issues:
1. It would have been nice to list the MAC address of the remote so I
could more easily add it to the access control list on my WAP.
2. The remote doesn't like networks with SSID broadcast disabled. I had
to enable this to make it happy, sigh, when I'd really rather have it
off.

Note: The squeezeCenter saw the player briefly. After I then began
setup via the remote it never came back.

Is there a way to give it a factory reset?

Any ideas?

Thanks,
jon

[slim] Duet Receiver Loses Connection

2008-03-07 Thread Juliozaffo

I have had the Duet since yesterday & have experienced three times where
the SBR lost its connection to SqueezeCenter. In the first two cases I
wasn't playing music for a while & noticed that the LED was blue. The
second time it happened I disabled my wireless connection & re-enabled
it and the SBR came back online.

The most recent disconnect just happened. I was trying to FF through a
song & held the FF button down for quite a while. I was trying to get
the song to play again but it never did. I then tried to play another
song and it wouldn't play either. Then I looked at the SBR & the LED
was blue. This time I just did a repair on my wireless network
connection & that brought it back online again.

Is anyone else experiencing these issues? Is there an easier way to
reconnect my SBR to Squeezecenter? I tried getting it back with the
controller & even reset the SBR but that wouldn't work. I also tried
to stop & restart Squeezecenter but that didn't work either. It seems
the only way to get it back online is to disable & then re-enable the
wireless. Encryption key issues? I'm using WPA.

[slim] How best to upgrade Slimserver to squeezecenter (debian apt-get)

Debian Linux (Ubuntu).

I have Slimserver installed, which was done via apt-get (I have deb

I see that squeezecenter now shows on apt-cache search.

What is the preferred way to upgrade please. Remove slimserver and
install squeezecenter? Or is there an upgrade route?

Ideally I'd like to keep settings etc.

Many thanks.

Re: [slim] Duet won't connect via wired

2008-03-07 Thread radish

That IP is the result of it not getting one via DHCP for some reason.

To perform a factory reset press and hold the button for 6 seconds
until it flashes fast red.

Re: [slim] Pixel policy?

2008-03-07 Thread boerner

Here's a simple trick that a friend taught me when my Asus EEE PC showed
up with a few stuck pixels:

As soon as possible after discovering you have the problem, take a high
quality microfiber cloth and rub in a circular motion over the affected
area. It may "un-stick" the bad pixel.

I did this on my Asus and it worked well. Although I can make
assumptions about how or why this may in some cases, I don't know for
sure.

Of course, YMMV.

Re: [slim] How to get Artwork?

2008-03-07 Thread MuckleEck

geoh,

unfortunately the way itunes stores the artwork is AFAIK not supported
by anything other than itunes.

To get artwork visible use MP3tag (if you are running a PC) and have it
download artwork as folder.jpg to each separate album folder.
SqueezeCenter can then read these folder.jpg files.

Alternatively copy and paste each of the images from itunes into the
directories manually they will be saved as image.bmp so will need to
add that name to Squeezecenter, this could be very laborious depending
on how many albums you have.

FInally you could try http://sourceforge.net/projects/iaae although I
haven't personally used it

Re: [slim] Duet can't connect to SB

2008-03-07 Thread mowensmd

updted firmware, have reset everything, power cycled router.

Interestingly, changed WEP to WPA. WPA is having grave difficulty
maintaining a connection. Tablet loses WiFi connection and takes
forever to reconnect. I'm not tech savvy enough to know why this would
be the case with WPA vs. WEP.

Only difference, I have been able to connect to the WiFi network now,
and find the SB. But it still can't connect the SB to the WiFi.

Also, on squeezecenter 7.0, network mapped folder is setup and works
but all genre tags are not being recognized (only 2 of 12 genres...all
others listed as "no genre". Slimserver version 6.05 had recognized
all my existing ID3's fine, and showed all by genre as expected

I've now connected the SB to ethernet...we'll see if it can just
connect straight away...

Question: Does Album Catalogue Creator (RC5+) create a trustworthy
output?

- Yes
- Yes but with minor issues
- No
- It does not work at all

Any ideas as to the cause of my problem? (post #332)

RC3 worked fine and I can't think what's changed since I used it!

Any album art download suggestions for Linux users (not for iTunes, of
course)? I want to see how they look on my new SBC.

Well that bites
Consequently is there a better way, than Apple Lossless, to store my
music CDs on my computer for use with SqueezeCenter and the Duet?
thx

Re: [slim] How to get Artwork?

2008-03-07 Thread MuckleEck

geoh,

yup it bites and I found out the hard way...re-ripping my entire
collection!

Most of the guys here on the forum use FLAC and with foobar2000 or
dBpoweramp (again both windows) you can convert from Apple Lossless to
FLAC (again lossless)

Once in FLAC, mp3tag or MediaMonkey can bring the atrwork in

Which OS are you using?
