Re: [slim] Shuffle algorithm
Do you plan to encrypt something with the titles in your playlist? Otherwise even rand() should be good enough for shuffling. To define equal chance for such an application is not that simple, though. There's an abundance of subjective priority parameters you may or may not want to see in that (e.g. it can be perfectly random to have the same song played twice if shuffling a 200 track playlist, as #200 and #1 of the second iteration, but it definitely does not FEEL like it, so there are algorithms which take care of that; dou you want to play longer tracks as often as shorter ones; do you want to shuffle albums along with the rest of the tracks or make sure they get somewhat distributed etc. etc.). Have a look at Erland's Dynamic Playlists plugin, I think you can define your own algorithms there. -- pippin --- see iPeng at penguinlovesmusic.com pippin's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=13777 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=47242 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

I don't know why you keep picking on me - Mr Sinatra wrote another large email, mainly bringing up info about the other thread rather than answering ModelCitizen's actual problem, and I write one line to say that his problem isn't the same issue. Here's what I would like to see (at least as an option): And now you've responded off topic too! When I'm looking for Nigel Kennedy Tracks I also want to find them when he's playing with some orchestra I don't know. I can't see what is wrong with Browse Artists Nigel Kennedy with artwork view turned on? That seems to be exactly the output you want to see. In addition, it will work faster (because the UI won't be rendering other albums by artists you are not looking for, and you don't have to scroll down to find the ones in the album list that have your desired artist. The option to change sort order appears in album context for all browse methods. eg. Browse Years, pick a year, to get a view of albums in that year. Sorting by album or year options are fine, as it is only possible to have one album name and one year associated with each album. Mr Sinatra wanted TPE2 to be used as Album Artist such that this would also be fine for sorting by album (as there would always be only one artist name to sort the list by), and I think we are okay with that discussion; an enhancement request has been raised. However, sorting albums by genre would still be a problem; and there's no way of specifying the primary genre. I guess it always sorts the album by the first genre tag when there are more than one? What you want is when album context is sorted by artist first, for albums with more than one performer (no Album Artist defined and not a compilation) to appear under each performer. I guess this should be the same with album context sorted by genre (album to appear under each genre). Sorting album context by genre is especially weird, as the genre isn't even displayed next to each album. I suggest you raise an enhancement request. Can't be that difficult, iTunes can do it. BTW, the way iTunes does this is quite simple: it sorts all TRACKS by artist and then groups together consecutive instances of the same album but NOT the ones that show up in different places. What I don't like on iTunes is that it does this for compilations as well (actually sometimes I like it, when I find an artist I was looking for vs. I don't like it when I don't find one and the compilation shows up 28 times). I KNOW this is a bit different from what I proposed (does not work in the Nigel Kennedy case) but it's a start. I would prefer to see what I proposed. I guess I have build several asis templates and standardize the renamed template. Yep, something like BRU could deal with that (and very easily if you know regular expressions, but I'm guessing that that's not the case). Without regular expressions (and with IMHO any bulk re-namer) you'll likely want to sort files using these different naming schemes into separate file trees before you start renaming. May be true with RE as well; I don't know your naming schemes. I am dealing almost toally with wave files and some APE. I just can't bross tolerate the degradation of the stage that mp3 does to audio. I don't think anyone here has suggested MP3. You might think about FLAC as it's lossless (you can get your WAV back bit-for-bit whenever you like) it can hold tags (tags are IMHO quite useful), and it can be sent directly to a squeezebox to be played (so lower bandwidth usage and no transcoding at your server). I'd suggest dbPowerAmp's MusicConverter for encoding into FLAC (or whatever lossless you prefer). Then, if your various naming schemes makes for an -utter- mess, maybe try MusicIQ's mixer, as this product can identify even misnamed music files and can add tags (use the function fix tags), at which point you're dealing with tags all in one known state, and you can bulk-modify them to your heart's content with MP3Tag's actions. Unless, of course, you are dealing with classical music, at which point, well, there doesn't seem to be a -good- solution. I've created a number of custom tags, and have filled them in with the info I think appropriate and have used MP3Tag to use these tags to fill in the standard ones. I figure that when/if tags-for-classical ever gets settled down, I won't have a huge re-tagging job ahead of me but just some more actions to write. This is a big enough job that (IMO, of course) taking the time to learn your tools will be a big win. It's like the exam they have for folks who want to work in the post office. Re: [slim] Best Music File Renaming program
Since I haven't seen this program mentioned as yet, please give a try to Renamer 6.0 by Albert Bertisson. The program is freeware and is available from: http://www.albert.nu/default.asp?sub=programs/default.asp?sub=renamer/main.htm This program will rename any file and works with templates and wildcards. Very easy to use, fast and very small. It will even rename directories. I also agree with what several others have already said, mainly that mp3tag is the program to use when working with tags and the occasional file renaming, particularly when the tags are already exist. You should also think about converting those wav files to flac files since flac files can be tagged (and you can use mp3tag to work with flac tags)and tags are where it's at in the world of SqueezeCenter. -- ralphpnj Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels - Snatch - The Transporter - Transporter 2 ralphpnj's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=10827 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=47216 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

I had the buffer fullness displayed on the SB3. It started playing immediately and the buffer went to 100% after a couple of seconds. I then turned on the Duet Controller that I had with me and instructed it to control my SB3. No problem. I played next song, previous song and so on with no skipping and 100% full after a few seconds. I then went down to my music room and turned on the Duet Receiver with the controller and started playing there as well. While the Duet Receiver was playing I went up to the kitchen again and checked the SB3. Still 100% full. Played next song, previous song and so on with no skipping. My laptop was on and connected to the wlan as well all the time. This leads me to believe that there is no problem with the wlan. My guess is that the processing power or something else in the Duet Receiver is causing the trouble. So the big question is: what should I do? [slim] Volume mutes on startup...
This is a seemingly random (but frequent) problem, and I haven't found a predictable way to replicate it. Sometimes when my Squeezebox starts playing, the volume is muted. The cute spectrum analyzer display dances happily on the SB, but no sound. If I turn the stereo volume up high, I can faintly hear the music playing. To fix, all I have to do is tap a volume button on the remote (or at the SqueezeCenter), and the sound comes back immediately at the proper level. This problem occurs intermittently whether I start the SB from the remote, SqueezeCenter, or via the alarm function. The problem occurs whether the Squeezebox is intitially Off or On. Twice, the muting has occurred when I switched from streaming audio off the Internet to a local FLAC file. As far as I know, it has never gone silent in the middle of a playlist or when I manually select a different song. Here is my setup: Two Squeezeboxes(1 SB2, 1 SB3), synced. Everything uses wired Ethernet connections. Analog audio out - and digital out - comes from the SB2. The SB3 is just a bedroom control; it isn't connected to anything except Ethernet. Only the analog audio mutes; digital always works (but is configured as fixed output). The analog outputs feed a whole-house system; the digital feeds a local stereo receiver. This is a minor annoyance that's been going on for several months (and several versions of SlimServer/SqueezeCenter), but it would be cool to fix it. Any ideas? I'm sure that would be too much to ask for. Dynamic Playlist plugin together with Custom Skip can pretty much do all this. Although, it require some work to configure it. The basic idea is: - Dynamic Playlist plugin plays either saved playlists by itself or also random mixes if SQL Playlist plugin is installed. - Dynamic Playlist checks each tracks against filters defined in the Custom Skip plugin, if a track matches any filter it is skipped, if it doesn't match it is added to the current playlist. - In the Custom Skip plugin you can setup a filter to skip tracks that have been recently played, or tracks by artists that have been recently played. If you want to do more advanced filtering in Custom Skip based on when a track was last played, you will also need the TrackStat plugin which keeps a history of when a specific track has been played. Re: [slim] AlbumArtist, Band (TPE2); Artist sort confusion (flac)
i can only speak for myself, but i posted 4 mp3s in bug 8001 that reproduce my problem. essentially, i want to be able to sort mp3s via the TPE2 tag in home - albums - artwork (gallery) view - then sorting by artist, year, album this essentially would override the Various Artists logic that SC7 uses. the thing is however, once this is done, it might reveal other issues and need more refinements, but i hope that doesn't demotivate anyone from doing this essential part first. thx. http://bugs.slimdevices.com/show_bug.cgi?id=8001 ps. AndyG might be working on it for 7.1 as of now anyway, but i don't know. To make it easier, you probably also like to install the Multi Library plugin along with the Custom Browse plugin. Re: [slim] No Transporter available
On a more relevant note it seems there is room for improvement in the way the Slimdevices products gets distributed internationally by Logitech. Judging by the threads on this forum it seems difficult to get reliable information about delivery times, availability of parts, etc. The extent of these problems seems to, for an outsider like myself, be on the borderline of not acceptable. The availability HAS improved. Before the take over, there wasn't an official distributor here. Some availability beats no availability at all. Logitech BTW doesn't give any info on delivery schedules, on any of their products. ModelCitizen;298848 Wrote: As per my original post. I wanted both the Artist and the AlbumArtist tag to appear in an Artist sort, but unfortunately this did not happen (with the result that such luminaries as Bach, Mozart and Part failed to appear in my Artist sort).. right, you only got ALBUMARTIST. i agree that ideally you should be able to choose, artist, albumartist, or a combo of the two for listing / sorting purposes. and i would add other tags to that, such as BAND, COMPOSER, etc... we have a mysql dbase, why not exploit it? ModelCitizen;298848 Wrote: I've now gone and put the stuff I had originally put into AlbumArtist tag into the Band, Composer, Conductor tags as appropriate. Although not relevant here, in some cases I have also added the record label into the band tag for labels that have a very distinct and recognisable output (Fax, Ultimae, Mille Plateaux, TIP.Records, Council of Nine etc). so now you have no album artist tags, and as a result, with the three checkboxes checked, you can see everything in your home - artists list. where i think you would have an issue, if it mattered to you, is when you went to sort your music in home - albums - artowrk (gallery) view - sort by artist, year, album. this is b/c things may not group where you think them logical to. [slim] SB3 behaving like those trick candles that won't blow out
I've seen several instances of a particular strange behavior, and I'm trying to determine where the problem lays. On some occasions, when I power off an SB3, less than a minute later, it turns itself back on and continues playing. Once the SB3 is in this state, if I hit the power off again on the remote, the same thing happens: it's back to life in under a minute. The only way I have figured out to get it to stay off in this situation is to pause the music before powering off. Then everything behaves normally. A few pertinent facts and observations: - I'm running Squeezecenter 7.0.1 on a Buffalo Linkstation Pro (with FreeLink Linux). This may or may not be related to the problem. One of the reasons I'm posting this in the General Discussion forum is to see if anyone else has experienced the same thing with non-Linux installations. I took a quick look in the bug database, and I didn't see anything that looked like this problem, but then again, it wasn't clear to me what search terms I should have been using. - I have three SB3s, and I have seen this behavior on two of them, so it's not the specific SB3 unit. (My third SB3 doesn't get used as much as the other two, so perhaps I just haven't used it enough lately to encounter the problem.) - The times this problem has occurred have all been when playing Random Mix. However, I play Random Mix much of the time, and most of those times this problem does not occur. I'm not convinced Random Mix necessarily has anything to do with it, but it might. - I would estimate the problem happens about one out of five times I turn off an SB3, but it's not consistent. I can't make it happen just by turning an SB3 on and off five or even ten times in a row. - A significant symptom that the SB3 will turn itself back on is when I power it off, its screen goes completely blank rather than showing the date and time screensaver that's normally displayed when the device is off (actually a standby state). If I see a blank screen, I know it's coming back to life on its own. - One of the times the problem occurred, I had the Squeezecenter window open in my browser, and I could see that even though I had turned off the SB3, Squeezecenter showed that the music was still playing. When the SB3 restarted itself about 30 seconds later, it was playing at the point where Squeezecenter had already advanced. In other words, Squeezecenter never paused or stopped the music during the period when the SB3 was off. On that occasion, I checked the Squeezecenter log immediately afterward, and there did not appear to be any entries or errors related to this happening. Anybody else seen behavior like this? -- TiredLegs TiredLegs's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=6201 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=47280 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

Beats the crap out of 1) waiting and 2) being ripped off (AUD is almost at parity with the USD). -- egd Internet forums: conclusive proof depth of gene pool is indeed variable, monkeys can be taught to cut code, and world peace is utterly unrealistic... egd's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=3425 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=45677 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss
Re: [slim] AlbumArtist, Band (TPE2); Artist sort confusion (flac)
MrSinatra;299041 Wrote: ok, cool. so its established then that an album artist tag in your files populates the ALBUMARTIST field in SC7, and that then becomes the only way you could sort your music. I have to admit that I am not sure what the problem being dicussed here is.. but anyway When I had populated the AlbumArtist tag for some albums and Browsed by Artist I could only locate those albums by the AlbumArtist tag in the resltant list. They were not listed by their Artist tag anymore. So, the AlbumArtist tag appeared to overide the Artist tag **when I browsed by Artist** I hope that is clear? MrSinatra;299041 Wrote: now, as to your wobbly... i can't speak to how artists come up in the artist list, i almost never use it. but it sounds like ALBUMARTIST over rode it all the time. by removing it, and checking the other categories, you now see ALL the fields, right? The way you put it is not exact. This is betterbut I must reiterate... I was only concerned with Browse by Artist. Once I had removed the AlbumArtist tag from the albums the albums in question were again listed by their Artist tag (when I Browsed by Artist). Once I'd checked the relevant SC7 Music Library option I mentioned above and completed the Composer, Band, Conductor tags these too appeared in the Browse by Artist list as well as the Artist. MrSinatra;299041 Wrote: whats interesting, is that you could not see or do anything with the data in your other tags when you had album artist listed in your tags. right, you only got ALBUMARTIST. No, that's not what I experienced... but that is not to say it's not true... it's just that I did not get the chance to experience it as I did not look around to see that AlbumArtist tag overode all other tags. All I noticed was that when completed it overode the Artist tag when I Browsed by Artist. MrSinatra;299041 Wrote: so now you have no album artist tags, and as a result, with the three checkboxes checked, you can see everything in your home - artists list. This might be true but the only thing that I am sure is true is that I removed the AlbumArtist tag and as a result the albums in question are now again being listed by Artist in Browse by Artist. However, hen I added the Composer, Conductor and Band tags then those tags also became visible in the Browse by Artist list. It doesn't mean that they wouldn't have had I still had AlbumArtist tag completed. I just don't know as I entered these tags after I had removed the AlbumArtist tag. MrSinatra;299041 Wrote: also, i am curious if you could tell me your impressions of my sorting method on your music. it may not appear wrong to you, b/c in your case, it may not be, as you are using classical music only, (or so it would seem). Me? Or Phil? For my part, I am lost I'm afraid. It looks me that I do not view/list music the way you do... and also not in the way Phil or Erland do. FYI it's Classical music that gave me the biggest problem.. just due to the fact that there are a lot more acknowledged roles involved in the production of classical music (i.e. Composer, Conductor, Orchestra, Violinist, Choir etc...). My problem was not solely confined to Classical music however. MC -- ModelCitizen Somewhere, something incredible is waiting to be known. [slim] Please help
I'm really annoyed, I tried all kinds of different ways (DSL router settings, connect squeezebox to different ports...) to connect my squeezebox to my wired network, but the same thing happens every single time. I post this here too, this is the thread I opened: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=47246 Maybe someone can help before I bring it back. The only question I don't know the answer to is whether or not I've exceeded that once taking all my CD's into account. It's been a little wild on Amazon.com lately - I suspect I've at least 35 CD's waiting for me at his place. I may have to rip them all there and leave some behind for someone else to collect on a return trip. -- egd Internet forums: conclusive proof depth of gene pool is indeed variable, monkeys can be taught to cut code, and world peace is utterly unrealistic... egd's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=3425 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=45677 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss
