The last couple of days I have played three-four 24/48 albums in flac format with only a few seconds of skipping. My conclusion is that the software mentioned in my previous post works much better in handling this format than the official release. Keep up the good work Logitech! I'm holding out on a new controller until the headphone jack works. Re: [slim] Best Music File Renaming program
I have used the dynamic duo of MP3tag and MusicBrainz to sort out the mess that was 1,800 cd's as flac. MB can identify the cd, and then correctly tag the selection. Works! If its not found in MB, then I fire up MP3tag and fix it the regular by-hand-way, this was useful for bootlegs and live shows and obscure cd's not in MB. You can also rename the actual filenames on you hd using this. However, as the sb uses tags rather than file names, it really doesn't matter what the file names actually are. Re: [slim] Connection reset by remote host
A possible explanation is as follows. Satellite connection have large TCP windows because of the longer delays which means a larger number of unacknowledged packets will be held in the SB compared to a terrestrial link. Packets are only acked when they are played. If packets are not acknowledged within a timeperiod (say 2 mins) the link will be reset. If you are listening to a stations using MP3 - it is possible the SB has buffered 2 mins of audio and so it would be 2 mins before the last packet is acknowledged and hence link resets. The timeout value will depend on the station. -- bpa bpa's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=1806 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=47409 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss
Re: [slim] Various Artists Logic... is it necessary?
not only that multiple ALBUMARTIST work on album. One can actually mix and match various ALBUMARTISTS across the tracks of an album: very good feature that definitely shouldn't be discontinued. I doubt that was an intended feature. Sounds really wrong. ALBUMARTIST is for grouping all songs on an album to be by the same artist. You have declared different album artists on songs on the same album. I think you have a time-bomb waiting to happen. Unless you don't actually have ALBUMARTIST tags because you've used some external tagging program that reports Album Artist but actually uses TPE2 BAND tag instead? I'm not getting what you are saying - you don't see a need for it in your library or you don't see why somebody else would need it? I personally would expect ALBUMARTIST to reference exactly one artist name. I use ARTIST tags to denote who performs on the songs on the album, and occasionally add BAND tags to add additional information about performers on the album. I use ALBUMARTIST to ensure that the album is seen as a regular album and appears under one artist when browsing by artist. I don't have a problem with people using ALBUMARTIST to contain multiple artist names; seems a valid thing to do as long as the same info is on each song. I may find a case when I will use that feature; I haven't yet, and not sure if I will. My only concern was that SqueezeCenter also stores a contributor (artist foreign key) within the album record. This can only be one artist, so what happens if I have two album artists? Note that I have seen strange effects on an album where I only set ALBUMARTIST on one song, rather than all songs. I thought that it would only be needed on songs with guest performers, but my recommendation is to set ALBUMARTIST on all songs. Otherwise you seem to get the set of artists and track artists reported inconsistently (can't remember what the specific issues were, just remembered not to do it again!). I disagree with that on the basis of my understanding that harleyman is considering the Duet as a replacement for the Soundbridge. In my opinion the Duet definitely shouldn't be judged by Softsqueeze and the web interface. To my mind the SB3 and earlier models are much more comparable to the Soundbridge and similar devices whereas the Duet is much more iPody - I personally bought a Duet system as my first network music player (in part) because of the display on the Controller letting the missus browse album covers to select music. So basically I think that there are two categories of networked players - the Soundbridge/SB3 class with graphically limited displays as opposed to the Sonos/Duet type player allowing cover browsing and so forth. This is all good detail. It's hard to analyse with only a sketchy outline of the database but I seriously believe the answers lie there. I'm not proposing a single track record - just to eliminate the many-to many tables. If that is not currently possible, how about creating an index on both columns in each m-to-m table? Then create an index on the referenced column in each parent. It's a bit messy but it could eliminate a lot of table scans. Re: [slim] Squeezebox Receiver and Controller now shipping!
Just curious (and call me stupid if this info is on the website, because I don't see it), in terms of internal hardware and sound quality, are the Receiver and my SqueezeBox 3 essentially the same, or not? I'm considering getting more devices for my home, and not sure which to look at. Secondly, does the controller easily switch between wireless networks? I live in a 3-story house made entirely of steel-reinforced concrete. Each floor must have its own separate wireless bridge, since the wireless signal can't penetrate between floors. Each bridge has its own frequency and security PIN, so when a wireless device moves from one floor to another it has to log on as if to a new network (all these bridges are different brands, so that's how I have to do it), though they all connect to the same home network. So the question is: if I carry the Controller between floors, it will lose one signal and locate another. Can I save multiple security settings in it so that it automatically logs on each time it loses one signal and finds another? Anyone who has the patience to read my question and respond will be blessed with gratitude. -- billingsgate billingsgate's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=2822 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=47354 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

Re: [slim] Help with buying decisoin
After just getting mine working right, I believe Pfarrell gave the best advice. I started with the ReadyNAS DUO and that was my big mistake. I have since migrated to a Windows PC and everything that was supposed to work is working. 3rd party plug-ins are work! I especially wanted the XM plug-in. It took a little bit to get it working and it still must be started each time from the UI on the PC. You can save favorite stations in your playlist, but they disappear every time you scan your music files. At least mine do. The initial set up *can* be a bit frustrating and then again sometimes it isn't. I do recommend wiring the receiver to your network. I use static IP on my network and setting up the controller took a bit more time because you really can't do it on the initial set up. I verified this with Logitech. Could be wrong, but I didn't find away around it. If you use DHCP, you're golden quickly. My initial set up was very frustrating, but again, I believe it was because the ReadyNAS DUO is seriously underpowered to run SC. BTW, I did upgrade the memeory to 1GB and it helped a tiny bit. Also, if you want to use any 3rd party plug-ins, getting help if you run a server is hard and some, if not all, plug-ins aren't re-written well enough to do exactly what the original was supposed to do. Please look at this page http://wiki.slimdevices.com/index.php/HelloWorld File uploads should work, with the exception of anything that MediaWiki considers HTML (like OPML formatted wikiradio entries). -= Jim -- JimC well, she wasn't all of that, but she sure was some of that. -- BKlaas' college buddy JimC's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=9428 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=46350 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss
Re: [slim] Controller slow to browse into with Music Folder
I can confirm this issue (running SC on a ReadyNAS). A quick look at the code didn't reveal anything obvious. But: when browsing on SB3, items are analyzed when they're displayed. This means everytime you go up/down one element. OTOH Controller fetches the full list of items. If you have eg. 1000 folders and analyzing one costs 0.1 seconds, you will hardly notice the delay on SB3, while 1000*0.1 second sums up to a long delay. It's a guess, would have to do more in-depth analysis. -- Michael ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

One more thought. If/when you do try out the product, don't give up after a couple of days if you aren't impressed. I've found some very helpful forum members who have provided valuable information both on the forums and behind the seens on email/PM. These are the people who make a community. They put their differences aside and go out of their way to explain why they love Squeezebox and what it offers them. Indeed, they are an amazing bunch. Maybe it's that they are into open source, and, therefore, more inclined toward idealism. I'm not really in their camp, when it comes to your posts... perhaps the fact I work with words to communicate ideas sensitizes me to the subtle perjorative jabs you take at our products in virtually EVERY message you post. For example: They're also explained where I'm going wrong at times like, as a simple example, I didn't know I could delete a track from the queue using the controller which I would have highlighted as a weakpoint otherwise. If you removed ...which I would have highlighted as a weakpoint otherwise. the sentence would have been just as effective in communicating your point but wouldn't have contained what I believe is your *real* message. But maybe I'm just jaded from years of experience on Usenet (prior to the Great Renaming), newgroups, BBSes, forums, etc. Or this example: They've helped me get a product, which I thought was buggy and unusable on day 1, to a system that now plays music fairly reliably. You've got a good community here, it's just a shame that a small handful of individuals feel the need to spoil it for everybody. You could have said: They've helped me work through a few problems and now I have a system that play music fairly reliably. Or even They've helped me get up and running despite a few problems. See the difference? Of course you do. In my opinion the extra words are very deliberate, which means you know exactly what I'm saying. A favorite colloquialism here in the United States is: You can put lipstick on a pig, but it's still a pig. In this case, it means dressing up your posts with an outwardly helpful appearance and an underlying tone of subtle disappointment, still delivers the message you really want to convey. -= Jim -- JimC well, she wasn't all of that, but she sure was some of that. -- BKlaas' college buddy JimC's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=9428 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=47333 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

And if you want to get the Mrs. I'll sure take a look. :) First off, I've avoided any negative opinion of the product on this forum; but, yes, I have cast some considerable criticism about the place on various av forums. These were based on a short, but very real, exposure I had with the product. Usually a short time with the product is enough to get a general feel for it, indeed it's all many newspaper or magazine reviewers have time for. They plug it in, play with it a bit and then copy/paste a few lines from the press pack to fill out their review. A good Sonos example would be that Guardian review where they claimed there was a proximity sensor in the handset. There isn't, it's a motion sensor, but this is what you get from a short term review. I inhabit a few different forums and get Google updates on Sonos about the place. I like to see what people think and what they are saying. This alerted me to many a post about Duet and how it was better than Sonos or, to paraphrase just as good, but cheaper. I knew, from my exposure, this simply wasn't the case and so it's only natural that I would post a response in an attempt to balance out the thread. I know where I have made posts and when my, considerably more detailed, comparitive review is complete I will be posting it in all of those places as an update for people to consider before purchase. If possible, without doing crazy thread bumping, I will tag it onto the end of existing discussions. I have no axe to grind with Logitech, I've bought their equipment in the past...no problem...my first mouse was a Logitech trackball, and my latest webcam is also Logitech branded. Re: [slim] Running AAC Plus with SC7
The folder ACCplusWinis still a zip file - you need to unzip it and there you will find the contents of PLugin.pm etc. If you downloaded the AACplusWin.zip file using IE 6 or IE7, they usually compress the AACplusWin.zip file into a GZ file. Why it does this is not clear (it doesn't happen with Firefox) but it adds the extra layer which has to be unzipped. -- bpa bpa's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=1806 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=41403 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

Re: [slim] music through headphone jack on duet remote?
I believe that the controller headphone audio stuff is going into 7.2, currently. It seems like what used to be known as the trunk development has been split into three trunks: 7.1, 7.2 7.3. I think that most of the 7.1 development thrust thus far has been to refactor a lot of the java script under the hood of the web interface. It may be that the controller audio out 7.2 feature could be moved down into 7.1 for its release if the development goes well. AFAIK, Richard T is completely rewriting all the audio code that went into softsqueeze and squeezeslave for this effort. As far as I'm concerned, this is a hopeful sign: I imagine that Richard knows the old code better than anyone and he knows all it's limitations. No one else would be in a better position to justify starting over from scratch than Richard. I feel confident enough in this that I just placed an order for 3 controllers and I fully expect to be able to hear audio out of them before the end of the summer, though I also expect that I'll have to run beta code to do so. -- gharris999 gharris999's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=115 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=47225 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

Re: [slim] Various Artists Logic... is it necessary?
The way I use ALBUMARTIST and the way I believe it was intended is as a means of designating the artist(s) to which the album should be attributed. As an _override_ mechanism to the normal/original behavior of attributing the album to all of the artists that appear on the album. I don't think I've used multiple ALBUMARTIST tags to date, but I could certainly see it and see that it would be perfectly valid. Using different sets of ALBUMARTISTs on different tracks of an album, however, I still see as inconsistent and meaningless. The album.contributor column is used for sorting albums by artist (and, consequently, organizing the alpha pagebar). Its use in SquezeCenter is one of the reasons that sorting albums by band or composer isn't possible. There is only _one_ contributor by which albums can be sorted under the current implementation. -- JJZolx Jim JJZolx's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=10 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=47297 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

I'm considering getting more devices for my home, and not sure which to look at. They are essentially the same, but the Receiver has no headphone jack, and a lower cost but still high quality DAC. You can easily switch wireless networks... the only thing is your setup is not ideal. If you put an wireless access point on each floor, use the same SSID on each, and only vary the channel (1,6,11)you won't have to switch networks. [slim] Sharing a server
Apologies if this has been covered before, I did search the forums without success. Is it possible for 2 independent users to share a SqueezeCenter between them, but not have control over each others players? For example, if you life in a household with children, you may wish to give them an SB receiver of their own in their bedroom - but you would want them to have access to each others receivers or to the main household ones in the living room or in Mom Dad's room. Is this possible? Or would they each need to run their own server? If they each ran their own instance of SC on their own PC, assuming they still share a LAN based network, is it still possible to stop one child attaching to the other's server using either their SB Controller or their web browser? I'm think of the same scenario applying in student houses, who may want to pool their music onto one box, or in small guesthouses; where the owner may wish to put a music player in each room but not allows other guests to accidentally wake each other up! JJZolx;300522 Wrote: That, IMO, is a bug. I think those artists should be suppressed whether or not the album is a compilation. I think the problem is more historical than anything else - at one time any album that had more than one artist was considered a compilation no matter what. It was never foreseen that you could have non-compilations by using explicit COMPILATION tags or ALBUMARTIST. http://bugs.slimdevices.com/show_bug.cgi?id=5108 The example I always use is the Sinatra album called 'Duets', where Sinatra records each track with a different artist. This is obviously a non-compilation. It's a Sinatra album and you want it grouped with Sinatra, so the ALBUMARTIST is Sinatra. Currently for SqueezeCenter you must mark it explicitly with COMPILATION=0. Unfortunately, as you point out, all those guest artists will be listed in the artist list. This is a bug that I really wish would get fixed. I think it would simplify a lot of things greatly. You know, that is a tough call. In your Sinatra example, without COMPILATION tag set, all those other guys might be not significant enough to deserve a place in artist list. But problem is if some of them are, then even if there is a guest artist there who also has a separate album in your library, you won't be able to flow between those two albums based on that artist. Solution I found is to tag only those tracks with COMPILATION=0. Then, what if, in classical music case there's an album where star soprano sings stuff from 5 famous composers. Soprano becomes ALBUMARTIST, composers become ARTIST, but I do want them to show in artist list and I want to be able to browse by that artist for other albums where they might participate. Setting COMPILATION=0 (for all tracks) solves is. So, in this case,it is desired behavior. [slim] Filtering compilation artists from artist browse menu
hi, I know there are a number of threads that touch on this point but I confess I haven't been able to sort them out in a way that helps me solve my problem. What I am trying to achive is quite simple. I would like clean up the artist list so the many artists with tracks just on compilation albums go away. I am using primarly FLAC files, with MusicIP delivering metadata to SqueezeCenter. I realize I need to add some tags to these files as part of the solution. At the moment the files are only tagged with Artist, Album, Genre, Track#, Title, and Year. My reading indicates another tag (COMPILATION=1) is needed as well. I would like to know if this is possible, and what other tags I need to set and and also what settings I need to adjust in MusicIP and SqueezeCenter. If this question has been answered before then all I need is a pointer to the relevant thread! thanks FF -- friendlyfire friendlyfire's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=15066 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=47438 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss
Re: [slim] Filtering compilation artists from artist browse menu
In theory all you need to do is set Group compilation albums together under Settings Music Library. Strangely, the wording of this option makes perfect sense to some people, while to others it seems to have nothing to do with artists shown in browse lists. -- JJZolx Jim JJZolx's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=10 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=47438 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss
Re: [slim] Filtering compilation artists from artist browse menu
Assuming you're happy with the default way of determining a compilation (any album with 1 individual artist) and you're using one folder per album, then you don't need to add compilation tags, you're good to go. Just go and switch on Group compilation albums together and they'll all move to under Various Artists. -- radish radish's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=77 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=47438 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss
Re: [slim] Various Artists Logic... is it necessary?
I still can't imagine why anyone would want combinations of artists to appear under Browse Artists but that of course is your choice. :-) I don't do that for all artists, in fact not frequently at all. I do it when I want to put the full names of artists in the ARTIST tags, but the album is known by the combination of the names. Unleaded by Robert Plant, Jimmy Page looks a bit messy, Unleaded by Page and Plant looks better. I can then click Page and Plant to only show albums by Page and Plant, whereas if I clicked Robert Plant, I get any solo and joint albums, etc. Phil ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

You got lucky then, it's a lottery. He conned me for my money over a year ago, and probably some more people. All people would not admit when being fooled like this. Stay away !! I even got an email where he claims that the supply has shipped without any shipping references at all, like an AWB number or similar or freighting company go figure ;-) After that no response to any email... -- Mnyb Mnyb's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=4143 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=47252 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

I've added a javascript onClick handler to the submit buttons in the Nokia770 skin to force the form submit (and clear) buttons. This works like a charm, and has been tested successfully on both the 770 and the N800 (where it was never broken, and still isn't). When can you get the fix? Some now, some soon: SC 7.0 Trunk change 19608 has all the Nokia770-skin specific fixes (Radio direct Tune-In Form + Local Search). Submit buttons for skin-inspecific resources, which include Music Services Search (Rhapsody, Pandora, Slacker, etc.) and submitting Player/Server settings-- this will have to be a 7.1 fix, as it imposes some risk on other webUIs. I will need to do some testing and hopefully have these elements fixed in 7.1 within the next week. cheers, #!/ben -- bklaas Logitech Developer: Squeezeplay/SqueezeOS/SqueezeboxController/SqueezeCenter Community Developer: Nokia770Skin http://www.last.fm/user/bklaas/ 'KHAAAN!'
