Re: [slim] lot's of backgroud noise like tape hiss
Based on the comments here it seems pretty clear that this is a server side problem with mp4 decoding. There's nothing involving volume settings or cabling that could cause noise to occur for only one format. To the people who just said that it sounds OK on their system: what is your OS and CPU type? If there is some byte ordering or alignment issue, it is conceivable that perhaps the top 8 bits are OK and the lower 8 bits are garbage. That would case a lot of white hiss, while still hearing the music over it. -- seanadams seanadams's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=3 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=48877 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

That would case a lot of white hiss, while still hearing the music over it. That really sounds like it makes sense. As I said, this problem was only introduced recently, I think it started with some of the early 7.x builds. Maybe there is some sort of incompatibility between the mov123 component and the recent Mac OS updates (10.5.x, Quicktime 7.x). Plus there is this problem with big vs. little endian being set the wrong way in the default convert.conf file, for which I already opened a bug (nr. 8434). If anyone from Slimdevices, ehrm, Logitec for that matter, needs more detailed information about my setup, please let me know. I consider the SC music library as my master library. At the moment, it tries to read every song from MusicIP, and merge the MusicIP data into the SC library. Re: [slim] MusicIP Rocks!
Hello- I can get MIP to work ( create mixes), but every time I restart my server I have to go though the MIP add tracks routine- it loses all my info each time. Once I do that, it works... I can make a mix even without rescanning from SC (nb: my library doesn't change between reboots). MIP will, after reboot, show that is has 0 tracks via the :10002 interface, while SC still shows the m next to everything. Clicking the m generates an empty playlist. Trying the create a test playlist option from the localhost:10002 MIP interface generates a blank page, after which I can no longer connect to 10002. If, after a fresh reboot, I then clear the chache via localhost:10002/api/flush (to be safe; may not be required since it shows zero to start, and other settings (mix track #, etc) are lost too), then add tracks in MIP, everything works. Seems the MIP cache is getting cleared every time I reboot? Any ideas on how to fix this? Thanks! PS: I have installed MIP headless on Ubuntu, and separately analyzed my library archived the analysis to tags, then moved the files to the Ubuntu machine. Also set up SC to use MIP per the instructions in the (excellent- thanks egd!) Wiki (http://wiki.slimdevices.com/index.php/Integrating_MusicIP_with_SqueezeCenter). For what it's worth, though I suspect this may be immaterial, I have set my playlists path in SC or be /home/a2/Playlists... not that I have any, but maybe it matters. [slim] Time for Slim Devices to get partnering up and licensing?
There are a lot of 'traditional' audiophile companies starting to get into streaming systems now - Linn and Naim, Macintosh, and AFAIK Meridian and Arcam won't be long. For me, the SqueezeCenter system is now so strong that it's unlikely that I will buy something that isn't compatible with it. I've considered a Linn Akurate DS, but dismissed it as the user experience is so poor. However, I'd consider a better-sounding front end. The Modwright Transporter looks interesting, but I wouldn't be able to hear before purchase - too risky. So I think that Slim Devices should be looking at partnering with established hifi manufacturers and getting their products in there. Easy wins: - AVI ADM9 with a receiver in it - Meridian F80, ditto - licensing the Transporter (or SB) system but let the hifi manufacturers do the audio bit Whether these products would sound better than a Transporter is irrelevant - the market is there, and this is a way to get their system everywhere. Make money from the licensing, and then sell extra Receivers/SB3s to these customers for their extra systems. To me, this is the best way for SD to maintain and indeed improve their position, and it would have the additional benefit of creating products for me to upgrade to. My main complain is that multiple Playlists support is non-existent, if like me, you connect your D2 using MSC to avoid dealing with any DRM issues. If you connect the player using MTP you get some Playlist support, but you have to deal with DRM. There is a single Dynamic Playlist (DPL) that works while connected via MSC/MTP. The D2 also has an external SD slot that allows one to add additional storage to grow your portable library using SDHC cards. I paired my D2 with Ultimate Ears Super.fi 5 Pro IEMs and I'm very happy with the sound of this combination. At the time of my purchase I tested several portable DAPs and none came close to matching the quality of sound of the D2 or its battery life. I have a total of 20GB in my D2 (4GB internal and 16GB in a SDHC card) It is a compact player that supports a wide variety of audio (lossy lossless) formats and also supports video. I find that using lossless formats is a bit of overkill for compact DAPs that have a limited amount of storage. When I travel I like to have as much music (variety) with me as possible. Using lossless format with the current storage limitation of compact-flash-based DAPs would greatly diminish the amount of tracks that I can carry with me. My main library for use for my home stereo system is lossless (FLAC). I used dBpowerAMP batch converter using the latest LAME encoder to build a secondary (portable) MP3 libray from my FLAC library. The dBpowerAMP batch converter is flexible, easy to use and on Dual Core computer is very fast. Select all the songs you want to convert, click convert and walk away. I set Lame to convert using Quality (VRB) -V2 standard. I'm very happy with the number of MP3 tracks I can fit in my D2 and with the quality of sound resulting using the LAME encoder settings above. -- tamanaco tamanaco's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=4620 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=48915 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

Just as a general question: you are creating playlists in the MIP GUI and they are not appearing in SC? Do I have that right? Are you running MIP headless? [slim] Using Favorites on a Controller - Change suggestion
I am currently using SC 7.1 on an Ubuntu 8.04 server and have a Squeezebox Duet. Firstly, let me say I am very satisfied with the Squeezebox hardware and Squeeze Center. Good Job Guys! Keep up the good work! Now to my suggestion. I have a reasonably large music library (Over 36,000 tracks, 3,000 albums and 800 Artists). Having said that we have our favorite Top 30 Artists/Albums. I thought that Favorites was gonig to be my saviour, so I happily went through and added out favorite artists to the Favorites on the controller. This allows me to play everything by that Artist, but that is not what I was hoping for. To my mind, the Favorite option now acts as a Create Playlist option. What I am looking for is for the Favorite Artist to then link to the Albums screen and from there to the individual songs. I use several services, with each having their own strengths and weaknesses for my use. I've loved Pandora, using it since it first became available. But for some reason, they always seem to stick in some out of place piano bar music, completely out of the blue, after playing a great set of songs that match my criteria. I give the song a thumbs down, and up pops another piano bar tune. This happens for 3-4 tracks in a row before it gets back to what I expected. Very odd, and sometimes very annoying. I also love Rhapsody, for it's ability to find and play almost anything I, or my guests can think of. However, I'm not a big fan of their channels, as they seem limited for a service with so much music to choose from. Live365 and RadioTime are good. I listen to these services to find specific stations, but typically the audio quality is not great for the stations I listen too. Radio quality audio, usually worse than FM, but better than AM. My favorite service for just sitting and having a virtual DJ play music for me is definitely Slacker. The mix of popular and unique/obscure (but good and well placed in the mix) tracks, along with good quality sound. The ability to add to the stations, kind of like Pandora is very nice. So my vote is to all services for offering more choices than we've ever had in the past. But if I had to vote for just one, Slacker is the one I listen to the most. -- PRGeno PRGeno's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=718 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=48442 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

Title says it all really. The Duet remote has been working OK, but when I turned it on over the weekend, the it said it wanted to install new software, which would take 'a few minutes'. After several hours of it 'Copying Update', I pressed the 'Home' button and got the 'Upgrade Failed' screen, saying there was a problem upgrading. I checked that it could see the network and that it was connected, and tried again. Same result. The problem is that now it can see the network, but can't see any players - although they're visible and operable from SqueezeCenter and a different remote. All I see on the 'Home' screen is 'Settings', 'Extras', and 'Choose Player', but I can't choose a player. What is the next step to fix the remote? -- DLORDE DLORDE's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=4659 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=48959 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss
Re: [slim] Cowon D2
I have a D2 and I transcode my FLACs to MP3 to allow me to fit more music on it. When attached to the PC via USB, it works just like a flash drive, so you can copy files onto it using normal file operations (e.g., Windows Explorer, DOS COPY). I don't do anything regarding ratings, so I cannot help you there. Re: [slim] MusicIP Rocks!
Tried navigating to .MusicMagic from the terminal window, got there, but the dir command showed nothing. I am not rescanning SC each time- it seems fine; just have to rebuild the MIP cache (if that's what add tracks is doing). Of course, SC won't mix unless I've redone the add tracks, but it does show the m's on the files. I changed the path for the cache in mmm.ini: cache=/home/a2/MusicIP/MusicMagicMixer/default.m3lib but it makes no difference and no (visible) file is created there. Nb: mmm.ini file I'm editing is in /home/a2/MusicIP/MusicMagicMixer/mmm.ini ... if this is the wrong file (maybe it has a copy somewhere else?) then maybe my command isn't being seen. Re: [slim] Duet Controller Artist List
I agree with your post. I am seeing this too. When I browse by artist on the Controller I find albums where that artist is simply the composer (not surprisingly, Bob Dylan is the main offender! - When I browse for the artist Bob Dylan I find tracks by Jimmy Hendrix, Bryan Ferry, U2, Rolling Stones, Johnny Cash, Rod Stewart etc etc...). The SC 7.0.1 browser and SB3 interface do not do this. All my music is organised with iTunes and scanned from there into SC. Maybe some people will say that this is what they want to see, but I agree with you, I just want to see albums where Bob Dylan is the artist, not the composer. I considered changing the tags in my music, but have decided not to for now, as I am sure things will change. I also have another thread (sorry do not know how to link) about Search for Artists showing a different behaviour on the Controller compared to the SB3 and the SC 7.0.1 browser. It seems that there are some inconsistencies between what is shown on the Controller and the SB3/SC browser. I am sure that people could argue for a long time as to which is 'right' or 'better' but it would be good if they could at least be consistent - or even better with a few simple options that might meet most peoples requirements. I am aware that there is a lot of debate about how to treat various different tagging schemes, compilations, classical music etc and it seems that nothing will ever please everyone. For example, I am also frustrated that on SC browser I can browse albums (with artwork) sorted by artist, but cannot do this on the Controller - but am aware that this is a feature that is being worked on. I only wish I had the expertise to help and very much appreciate the work of the developers to date - this system really has improved over the last couple of years and features I wished for have arrived over time. Re: [slim] Time for Slim Devices to get partnering up and licensing?
I have a feeling that the foray into the world of audiophilia was a one-off. Logitech is a company built on selling 10's of thousands of $50 products, not selling fifty $10,000 ones. One big issue I see with a high-end audio company using the Squeezebox SqueezeServer slim device approach is that it's _way_ too techy. The computer audio products that are currently coming out of the industry take a much simpler, more complete approach than the client/server Squeeze system. They're drop-in items to the audio rack. They don't go near things like wireless routers and DHCP and WPA-PSK and porting software to run on Mac OS X and Linux and Vista and with web interfaces and scrolling screen savers and all the millions of headaches and customer service issues that go with the Squeeze approach. I'll bet most of those companies have at most two or three outsourced programmers working on their software. That's a fraction of the number that Logitech is paying to work on Squeezebox software and firmware. -- JJZolx Jim JJZolx's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=10 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=48945 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

Rockbox on it works even better than on my 1st G Nano and is very fast. Very nice deal for the money once you add rockbox for flac, ogg etc support. Even has a FM tuner and voice recorder. You can have a 10 to 16 gb flash player for $80 to $100.
