Re: [slim] lot's of backgroud noise like tape hiss

2008-06-16 Thread seanadams

Based on the comments here it seems pretty clear that this is a server
side problem with mp4 decoding. There's nothing involving volume
settings or cabling that could cause noise to occur for only one
format.

To the people who just said that it sounds OK on their system: what is
your OS and CPU type?

If there is some byte ordering or alignment issue, it is conceivable
that perhaps the top 8 bits are OK and the lower 8 bits are garbage.
That would case a lot of white hiss, while still hearing the music over
it.

That really sounds like it makes sense. As I said, this problem was
only introduced recently, I think it started with some of the early 7.x
builds.

Maybe there is some sort of incompatibility between the mov123
component and the recent Mac OS updates (10.5.x, Quicktime 7.x).

Plus there is this problem with big vs. little endian being set the
wrong way in the default convert.conf file, for which I already opened
a bug (nr. 8434).

If anyone from Slimdevices, ehrm, Logitec for that matter, needs more
detailed information about my setup, please let me know. I am happy to
help and get this fixed, because at least 50% of my music collection
are AAC/MP4 and it's really no fun right now.

Re: [slim] MusicIP Playlists

2008-06-16 Thread technojunkie

I don't have a Playlists folder showing in SC. I've found the setting
SC/Plugins/MusicIP/MuscIP Playlist Format and there are two boxes next
to this setting marked Prefix and Suffix. The Prefix box currently say
MusicIP: and the Suffix box is empty.

Do I need to change these settings and, if so, what to ?

Re: [slim] MusicIP Rocks!

2008-06-16 Thread Phil Meyer
I consider the SC music library as my master library. At the moment, it tries
to read every song from MusicIP, and merge the MusicIP data into the SC library.

When I do a rescan for new and changed files, I would prefer it if it only
requested the mixable state for each file that is new or changed. I'm sure the
MIP API supports that.

[slim] Improvements in Duet?

2008-06-16 Thread Robin D

Hi - have there been any significant improvements in the Duet over the
past 3 weeks or so? I note that the official release is still 7.0.1...
My local retailer will not give me my money back, despite the fact that
it doesnt (f*ing) work for me and I have to collect the second
replacement soon.
Rather than trying to wrestle my cash back, I'm willing to give it
another shot if the networking problems have been addressed.
Failing that, if I can't get my money back, I'm planning to buy an old
computer and directly connect it. Sad isn't it. I don't even know if
that'll work

The nightlies are basically the most upto date version? Do these need a

DNS issue is unlikely to affect playback from local files.

It sounds like your AVS issue again - you may need to re-enter the
settings again to exclude checking of SC and database files.

Another likely cause of stuttering is wireless interference from a
another newly setup Wifi net or a new electrical device. Use
Netstumbler to see what nets are in your area ?

What format are the files ?

In open country wifi has a range of a couple of miles and some people
have also upped the power output of their routers.

Electrical interference can comes from a number of sources including
anecdotally from items such as fluorescent tubes and burglar alarms.

Eliminate wireless as a possibility by wiring Sb3 to router (if
necessary move SB3 closer to router and use earphones to test).

Change the channel on your wireless access point could be an option.
Try different ones and perhaps you can avoid the issue. If it is a
wireless interference issue it could be tricky to fix.

Thanks but i already tried the NET_UDAP tool which is very unreliable
and not always connects to the SBR.

What i am looking for is a software solution within Jive application,
it looks like there is a source that should support wired configuration
but so far i did not succeed to make it work.

When application is looking for a device (the button on the device is
red and blinking) , it finds it during the scan , but since IBSS is not
working on my platform, i am trying to configure it wired, but there is
no response from the device since it continues to blink and doesnot
respond

If someone worked on this before (wired connection) please respond!!

I am adding the log when running the applicaiton in wired mode,
adhoc value is set to nil manually, and it seems that application is

If it is wireless changing channel may help - 13 is less used in
Europe.

However since the problem seems to have occurred when you change
graphics card you may have a rare problem related to PCI latency. It
doesn't happen very often so it is a long shot.

See http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=31748

I don't knwo how to cure it on XP but it may be a BIOS setting.

Re: [slim] MusicIP Rocks!

2008-06-16 Thread lork

Hello-

I can get MIP to work ( create mixes), but every time I restart my
server I have to go though the MIP add tracks routine- it loses all
my info each time. Once I do that, it works... I can make a mix even
without rescanning from SC (nb: my library doesn't change between
reboots).

MIP will, after reboot, show that is has 0 tracks via the :10002
interface, while SC still shows the m next to everything. Clicking
the m generates an empty playlist. Trying the create a test
playlist option from the localhost:10002 MIP interface generates a
blank page, after which I can no longer connect to 10002. If, after a
fresh reboot, I then clear the chache via localhost:10002/api/flush (to
be safe; may not be required since it shows zero to start, and other
settings (mix track #, etc) are lost too), then add tracks in MIP,
everything works.

Seems the MIP cache is getting cleared every time I reboot? Any ideas
on how to fix this?

Thanks!

PS: I have installed MIP headless on Ubuntu, and separately analyzed my
library archived the analysis to tags, then moved the files to the
Ubuntu machine. Also set up SC to use MIP per the instructions in the
(excellent- thanks egd!) Wiki
(http://wiki.slimdevices.com/index.php/Integrating_MusicIP_with_SqueezeCenter).
For what it's worth, though I suspect this may be immaterial, I have set
my playlists path in SC or be /home/a2/Playlists... not that I have
any, but maybe it matters. The Music folder in SC basic setting is left
blank.

Net UDAP is the only implementation I know of so far, but feel free to

At that sort of price I may as well get an 8GB iPod touch at £179.99,
which will do far more than the Slim Controller unit, as well as having
a nice large, well-lit touchscreen.

Can you open a terminal window, change to your MusicIP directory, run

Bascially the cache= line should point to a filename. The file is
ordinarily stored in /home/username/.MusicMagic/ and is by default
called default.m3lib.

If your cache= line is empty change it to cache=default.m3lib and let

[slim] Time for Slim Devices to get partnering up and licensing?

2008-06-16 Thread adamslim

There are a lot of 'traditional' audiophile companies starting to get
into streaming systems now - Linn and Naim, Macintosh, and AFAIK
Meridian and Arcam won't be long.

For me, the SqueezeCenter system is now so strong that it's unlikely
that I will buy something that isn't compatible with it. I've
considered a Linn Akurate DS, but dismissed it as the user experience
is so poor. However, I'd consider a better-sounding front end. The
Modwright Transporter looks interesting, but I wouldn't be able to hear
before purchase - too risky.

So I think that Slim Devices should be looking at partnering with
established hifi manufacturers and getting their products in there.
Easy wins:
- AVI ADM9 with a receiver in it
- Meridian F80, ditto
- licensing the Transporter (or SB) system but let the hifi
manufacturers do the audio bit

Whether these products would sound better than a Transporter is
irrelevant - the market is there, and this is a way to get their system
everywhere. Make money from the licensing, and then sell extra
Receivers/SB3s to these customers for their extra systems.

To me, this is the best way for SD to maintain and indeed improve their
position, and it would have the additional benefit of creating products
for me to upgrade to. Get to it, Sean! :)

Re: [slim] Cowon D2

2008-06-16 Thread tamanaco

I have D2 for over a year already and I have yet to find a similar size
portable DAP with better sound quality. The user interface is not the
best, but it is very fast. Firmware updates are released frequently,
but they add useless features and fail to fix some long-existing tags
and playlist bugs. My main complain is that multiple Playlists support
is non-existent, if like me, you connect your D2 using MSC to avoid
dealing with any DRM issues. If you connect the player using MTP you
get some Playlist support, but you have to deal with DRM. There is a
single Dynamic Playlist (DPL) that works while connected via MSC/MTP.
The D2 also has an external SD slot that allows one to add additional
storage to grow your portable library using SDHC cards. I paired my D2
with Ultimate Ears Super.fi 5 Pro IEMs and I'm very happy with the
sound of this combination. At the time of my purchase I tested several
portable DAPs and none came close to matching the quality of sound of
the D2 or its battery life. I have a total of 20GB in my D2 (4GB
internal and 16GB in a SDHC card) It is a compact player that supports
a wide variety of audio (lossy lossless) formats and also supports
video. I find that using lossless formats is a bit of overkill for
compact DAPs that have a limited amount of storage. When I travel I
like to have as much music (variety) with me as possible. Using
lossless format with the current storage limitation of
compact-flash-based DAPs would greatly diminish the amount of tracks
that I can carry with me. My main library for use for my home stereo
system is lossless (FLAC). I used dBpowerAMP batch converter using the
latest LAME encoder to build a secondary (portable) MP3 libray from my
FLAC library. The dBpowerAMP batch converter is flexible, easy to use
and on Dual Core computer is very fast. Select all the songs you want
to convert, click convert and walk away. I set Lame to convert using
Quality (VRB) -V2 standard. I'm very happy with the number of MP3
tracks I can fit in my D2 and with the quality of sound resulting using
the LAME encoder settings above.

You can if you are in the US and can therefore buy it from the

In theory in the UK you could buy it online and return it after 7 days

Just as a general question: you are creating playlists in the MIP GUI
and they are not appearing in SC? Do I have that right?
Are you running MIP headless?
If you are running headless, do you have the headless and GUI versions
pointed at the same cache (typically named default.m3lib)?
I didn't even realize that you could pass playlists created in the MIP
GUI to SC via the MIP API, so I have questions rather than answers...

[slim] Using Favorites on a Controller - Change suggestion

2008-06-16 Thread dramus

I am currently using SC 7.1 on an Ubuntu 8.04 server and have a
Squeezebox Duet.

Firstly, let me say I am very satisfied with the Squeezebox hardware
and Squeeze Center. Good Job Guys! Keep up the good work!

Now to my suggestion. I have a reasonably large music library (Over
36,000 tracks, 3,000 albums and 800 Artists). Having said that we have
our favorite Top 30 Artists/Albums.

I thought that Favorites was gonig to be my saviour, so I happily went
through and added out favorite artists to the Favorites on the
controller. This allows me to play everything by that Artist, but that
is not what I was hoping for. To my mind, the Favorite option now acts
as a Create Playlist option.

What I am looking for is for the Favorite Artist to then link to the
Albums screen and from there to the individual songs.

Anyone else have a view on this?

Are you transcoding to something (like flac) or sending it straight as

Re: [slim] lot's of backgroud noise like tape hiss

2008-06-16 Thread rdefelice

I am also experiencing this issue. I can second that I believe it has
to do with the transcoding of the audio on the server side. In my
setup, I've got two players: a duet receiver and squeezeslave running
on my media center pc that also runs SqueezeCenter.

Every AAC file I play on the duet receiver sounds fine (no transcoding
on the server), but I hear a hiss when I play it via squeezeslave
(which requires the server to transcode the AAC to MP3 before sending
it to the player).

I've tried upping the LAME quality setting, but it has no effect.
Anyone have any ideas?

Specifics on my setup:
SqueezeCenter/squeezeslave:
Gentoo Linux
SqueezeCenter 7.0
squeezeslave 0.7.5
LAME 3.97

relevant parts of my convert.conf:

mov mp3 * *
[faad] -w -f 2 $FILE$ | [lame] --resample 44100 --silent -q
$QUALITY$ -b $BITRATE$ -r - -
mov wav * *
[mplayer] -novideo -ao pcm:nowaveheader:file=/dev/fd/4 $FILE$
41 1/dev/null
mov aif * *
[mov123] $FILE$

Re: [slim] Poll: Favorite Online Music Service

2008-06-16 Thread PRGeno

A poll associated with this post was created, to vote and see the
results, please visit http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=48442

Question: Favorite Online Music Service

- Pandora
- Rhapsody
- Radio IO
- Radio Time
- Slacker
- Live 365
- Sirius
- Generic internet radio (i.e. Shoutcast)

This is a tougher choice than it seems for me. I use several services,
with each having their own strengths and weaknesses for my use.

I've loved Pandora, using it since it first became available. But for
some reason, they always seem to stick in some out of place piano bar
music, completely out of the blue, after playing a great set of songs
that match my criteria. I give the song a thumbs down, and up pops
another piano bar tune. This happens for 3-4 tracks in a row before it
gets back to what I expected. Very odd, and sometimes very annoying.

I also love Rhapsody, for it's ability to find and play almost anything
I, or my guests can think of. However, I'm not a big fan of their
channels, as they seem limited for a service with so much music to
choose from.

Live365 and RadioTime are good. I listen to these services to find
specific stations, but typically the audio quality is not great for the
stations I listen too. Radio quality audio, usually worse than FM, but
better than AM.

My favorite service for just sitting and having a virtual DJ play music
for me is definitely Slacker. The mix of popular and unique/obscure
(but good and well placed in the mix) tracks, along with good quality
sound. The ability to add to the stations, kind of like Pandora is
very nice.

So my vote is to all services for offering more choices than we've ever
had in the past. But if I had to vote for just one, Slacker is the one
I listen to the most.

I voted for Pandora, but unfortunately being in the UK I can no longer
listen to it. I'd happily pay my $36 if I was in the States.

I have played with last.fm, but most of the artists that I like they
only have 1 or 2 tracks available from, which doesn't bode well for
them being able to play music similar to what I like.

1) Last.fm. Absolute gold-dust, given that UK users have less services
to pick from. The joyous discovery of 'Play Tag' radio and 'Similar
Artists' radio fully affirmed to me just how superb a Squeezebox is.

2) AlienBBC. The BBC 'listen again' archives at your fingertips, from
your sofa or bed, is all you can ask for when it comes to having enough
quality UK radio to choose from.

IMHO these two services alone are what Logitech should really push in
the UK if they want to make people sit up and notice. I know of a great
many people, who may regard themselves as music/internet savvy, who had
no idea about such features. Marketing is just not localised enough
country-wise, or reaching the Joe Bloggs/'PC World' shoppers it needs
to.

[slim] Duet Remote permanently 'Copying Update'

2008-06-16 Thread DLORDE

Title says it all really.

The Duet remote has been working OK, but when I turned it on over the
weekend, the it said it wanted to install new software, which would
take 'a few minutes'. After several hours of it 'Copying Update', I
pressed the 'Home' button and got the 'Upgrade Failed' screen, saying
there was a problem upgrading. I checked that it could see the network
and that it was connected, and tried again. Same result.

The problem is that now it can see the network, but can't see any
players - although they're visible and operable from SqueezeCenter and
a different remote.

All I see on the 'Home' screen is 'Settings', 'Extras', and 'Choose
Player', but I can't choose a player.

What is the next step to fix the remote?

I have a D2 and I transcode my FLACs to MP3 to allow me to fit more
music on it. When attached to the PC via USB, it works just like a
flash drive, so you can copy files onto it using normal file operations
(e.g., Windows Explorer, DOS COPY).

I don't do anything regarding ratings, so I cannot help you there.

Overall, I am pretty happy with the sound quality and with the device.

Playlists are saved on the disk, not the cache file.

You need to specify a directory for SC to look for playlists and you
need to save your MiP playlists in that directory. When you save a
playlist in the GUI, I'm pretty sure you can choose where to save the
file.

SB2 is same guts as SB3, the 3 just has a nicer looking package.

Would not recommend SB1, they don't do flac natively, and have smaller
buffers. Unless you do all MP3 -- if so, they can be a deal.

Re: [slim] MusicIP Rocks!

Hey, egd-

Thanks for the additional help; the ability to mix (sans reboot) is
already great!

I used the toolbar search function to look for default.m3lib in a2
and file system, and it was not found anywhere. Could n ot spot it by
eye anywhere in the MusicIP folder/subfolders.

Code:

  [EMAIL PROTECTED]:~/MusicIP$ cat mmm.ini
cat: mmm.ini: No such file or directory
  [EMAIL PROTECTED]:~/MusicIP$ cd MusicMagicMixer
  [EMAIL PROTECTED]:~/MusicIP/MusicMagicMixer$ cat mmm.ini

  [EMAIL PROTECTED]:~/MusicIP/MusicMagicMixer$

The x-x-x-xx is where my key is (dashes included in my
key).

Changed the line you said, rebooted, same problem. Search also did not
turn up default.m3lib

Here's the changed file, in case it helps:

Code:

why you couldn't find it with the search tool.

Perhaps you could try explicitly dictating where the cache file should
be written/ stored. My mmm.ini (on my NAS) is as follows [as you can
see I've dictated that the library should be in a different folder]:
Code:

  [mix]
  mixsize=35 tracks
  restrict=25 tracks

  refresh=15

and on my Ubuntu desktop, it's as follows:
Code:

[mix]
  mixsize=40 tracks
  restrict=25 tracks
  style=25
  variety=0
  seed=1
  [server]
  proxy=0
  host=
  proxyport=

  [services]
  key=
  cache=default.m3lib
  port=10002
  tivo=0

  readonly=0
  cpu=0

On my Ubuntu desktop default.m3lib is located at
/home/egd/.MusicMagic/default.m3lib, which as mentioned above, would be
it's default location.

Out of curiosity, you're not having to do a rescan in SC everytime,
right?

Click on settings on the bottom right hand corner of the SC web page.

That brings up the setting page. You will be put on the basic

pathname where you are storing the playlists from the MusicIP GUI.

Re: [slim] MusicIP Playlists

If I put the pathname of my Playlists folder, will SC load the MusicIP
cache library as well ?

Re: [slim] MusicIP Rocks!

2008-06-16 Thread lork

Tried navigating to .MusicMagic from the terminal window, got there,
but the dir command showed nothing.

I am not rescanning SC each time- it seems fine; just have to rebuild
the MIP cache (if that's what add tracks is doing). Of course, SC
won't mix unless I've redone the add tracks, but it does show the
m's on the files.

I changed the path for the cache in mmm.ini:
cache=/home/a2/MusicIP/MusicMagicMixer/default.m3lib

but it makes no difference and no (visible) file is created there.

Nb: mmm.ini file I'm editing is in
/home/a2/MusicIP/MusicMagicMixer/mmm.ini ... if this is the wrong file
(maybe it has a copy somewhere else?) then maybe my command isn't being
seen.

Thanks again!

Re: [slim] Time for Slim Devices to get partnering up and licensing?

compatibility without any licensing if they wanted. Of course they may

 interested in implementing slimproto.

While SC is open source, I can't see a manufacturer using it without a
licensing deal - they would want to partner up to get some guarantee of
compatibility long-term. It certainly makes sense to me - let them do
the audio and let SD take a cut of each sale, providing a robust
streaming system. Everyone wins!

I'm sorry, I see your source of confusion.

In my original post, I meant to say put the path for your playlists in
Playlists Folder, not Music Folder.

Sorry about that.

I've edited the post regarding this to correct my error.

I don't see why not, as long as you have it configured to use MusicIP.

To be honest, I hadn't even seen the Playlists folder option in

Playlists in SC.

Thankyou very much for your help.

I think it depends on what the mythical third party wants to do. If
they simply want to easily add streaming audio to a device which
doesn't have it (e.g. SBR-in-a-minisystem) then sure, I can understand
them just licensing the whole SBR and throwing it in. On the other if
they already have a streamer, display, CPU, software etc etc I don't
see how any licensing deal would be very useful. Any firmware Logitech
could provide probably wouldn't work on their box without a lot of
modification so why not just implement it yourself and save the fees? I
guess Logitech could develop custom implementations for hire but that's
a long way from just licensing.

Re: [slim] Duet Controller Artist List

2008-06-16 Thread WhaleOil

I agree with your post. I am seeing this too. When I browse by artist
on the Controller I find albums where that artist is simply the
composer (not surprisingly, Bob Dylan is the main offender! - When I
browse for the artist Bob Dylan I find tracks by Jimmy Hendrix, Bryan
Ferry, U2, Rolling Stones, Johnny Cash, Rod Stewart etc etc...). The
SC 7.0.1 browser and SB3 interface do not do this. All my music is
organised with iTunes and scanned from there into SC.

Maybe some people will say that this is what they want to see, but I
agree with you, I just want to see albums where Bob Dylan is the
artist, not the composer. I considered changing the tags in my music,
but have decided not to for now, as I am sure things will change.

I also have another thread (sorry do not know how to link) about Search
for Artists showing a different behaviour on the Controller compared to
the SB3 and the SC 7.0.1 browser.

It seems that there are some inconsistencies between what is shown on
the Controller and the SB3/SC browser. I am sure that people could
argue for a long time as to which is 'right' or 'better' but it would
be good if they could at least be consistent - or even better with a
few simple options that might meet most peoples requirements.

I am aware that there is a lot of debate about how to treat various
different tagging schemes, compilations, classical music etc and it
seems that nothing will ever please everyone.

For example, I am also frustrated that on SC browser I can browse
albums (with artwork) sorted by artist, but cannot do this on the
Controller - but am aware that this is a feature that is being worked
on.

I only wish I had the expertise to help and very much appreciate the
work of the developers to date - this system really has improved over
the last couple of years and features I wished for have arrived over
time.

Re: [slim] Time for Slim Devices to get partnering up and licensing?

2008-06-16 Thread JJZolx

I have a feeling that the foray into the world of audiophilia was a
one-off. Logitech is a company built on selling 10's of thousands of
$50 products, not selling fifty $10,000 ones.

One big issue I see with a high-end audio company using the Squeezebox
SqueezeServer slim device approach is that it's _way_ too techy. The
computer audio products that are currently coming out of the industry
take a much simpler, more complete approach than the client/server
Squeeze system. They're drop-in items to the audio rack. They don't
go near things like wireless routers and DHCP and WPA-PSK and porting
software to run on Mac OS X and Linux and Vista and with web interfaces
and scrolling screen savers and all the millions of headaches and
customer service issues that go with the Squeeze approach. I'll bet
most of those companies have at most two or three outsourced
programmers working on their software. That's a fraction of the number
that Logitech is paying to work on Squeezebox software and firmware.

Re: [slim] Cowon D2

2008-06-16 Thread Nonreality

If you don't end up with the Cowon keep your eyes open for a Sansa 200E.
You can find the refurbished 6gb for about $50 and they do a great
refurb. It take sdhc and has very good sound quality with Rockbox.
You need the ver 1 firmware which starts in a 1. Ver 2 is not
supported yet and starts with a 3(go figure). Replaceable at home
battery. Rockbox on it works even better than on my 1st G Nano and is
very fast. Very nice deal for the money once you add rockbox for flac,
ogg etc support. Even has a FM tuner and voice recorder. You can have a
10 to 16 gb flash player for $80 to $100. The sound quality is fine on
my Westones.
