Any solution? Or I have to bear it?

Please open a bug report on http://bugs.slimdevices.com and upload a small

[slim] problem with ASX and SB receiver, reboot

2008-07-02 Thread hemsoe

Hi...

I have a SB Receiver and SB Classic.
When I stream radio from http://dr.dk/netradio/wmp.asp /
http://www.dr.dk/netradio/Metafiler/asx/dr_p3_128.asx my receiver
reboot many times. Sometimes it helps if I start the stream from the
webinterface...

Any ideas, maybe try the stream on a receiver...

There is no problem with my SB Classic.

/Dan

[slim] Protecting library with NTFS permissions

2008-07-02 Thread amcluesent

So, although I have RAID1 I was worried that a foolish deletion could
blow-away my music library.

After some trials, I figured out this protection scheme using NTFS
permissions. Has anyone come up with a better approach?

In essence, I logged in as Administrator and went to the top directory
of the library to be secured, then for 'Everyone' added Deny
permissions to just the Folder and its subfolders. The Deny permissions
are for Deletion of Subfolders and Files and Delete.

Now these Deny permissions are in place, you can't delete/rename any
folders in the library or the root folder. However, you can move/copy
directories into the library and change/delete individual files (i.e.
change meta-data). Files can still be deleted as the Deny permissions
weren't applied to files, only folders, you could change this if you
really wanted to lock down everything.

If you really need to delete a directory, you need to change it's
permissions by copying down all the inherited permissions, then delete
the specific Deny permissions for Everyone. Not something you can do by
accident.

Try it yourself with a test directory structure :)

I need a replacement remote control for a SB3 - the slimdevcies site

Where can I get one of these (or even a non backlit one) in the UK?

[slim] Strange Display Behaviour

2008-07-02 Thread Ashy72

Hi, It seems since the last two firmware updates I have noticed that the
squeezebox display shows the next track it will play in the playlist
when a track first starts for a few seconds then shows the current
track playing, where do I find the setting to disable this, I have
looked all over the place and can't find where this has been enabled.

I have lots of plugins, Trackstat, Dynamic Playlist, SQL Playlist,
Custom Browse, Custom Skip, Remove Last Played Track, Multilibrary,
Lazy Search, Musicinfoscr

I think I have Squeezecenter 7.01 I use stable repository for debian

Re: [slim] Wolfgang's Vault

2008-07-02 Thread Nonreality

Before the Squeezebox I had a Philips device that worked like the SB in
that it would stream whatever the computer was playing to my stereo.
It installed as an alternate sound card and it worked pretty good
actually. Pretty simple but the only problem was that it streamed
everything once started. Some of the newer ones I think have
eliminated the problem by letting the program choose the soundcard.
Anyway it's sites like this that makes me think I should hook it back
up along with the SB. This looks like a very entertaining site, thanks
for bringing it up.

Re: [slim] Best 802.11N Router for Duet

2008-07-02 Thread booguss

For me the combination DIR-635 as router and DAP-1353 as Access Point in
Repeater Mode works great. Now I have a really good wireless strenght
throughout the whole house ( never under 80% :-) )
However, before I got this to work I had to spend some great time with
the the D-Link telephone support. Now I have learned that it's there
are compatibility issues between the wless router and the DAP.

A wireless modem/router DI-624 and DAP does not work. There must be
first a simple ADSL-modem, then wireless router (preferably DIR-635 or
DIR-655) and then - somewhere else in the house - the DAP, everything
setup according to the standards of same SSID, Subnet IP etc... But
once set up - rock on!!
Cheers!

Re: [slim] Receiver Connection Problems

2008-07-02 Thread smc2911

Update: fired up a version of SC 7.0 on a Windows box and the SBR setup
worked fine there, so it does seem to be a problem with 7.1. When I try
to switch the music source (since both servers are running), the SBR is
unable to connect to the linux machine running 7.1. The SB3 (which also
connects wirelessly) is having no problems with the 7.1 server nor is
the the SBC (at least when it's controlling the SB3). Interestingly,
when I have the SBR controlling the SBR I have the option to Choose
player to the SB3 but once I'm over there, under Choose player only
the SB3 is listed, not the SBR.

Hope that all made some sense.

Re: [slim] WiFi is a four letter word. Towards less painful setup

2008-07-02 Thread andynormancx

You seem to be making statements on that page about single subnets that
are misleading, I really thing that you should reword things so that
you don't say things like it being generally mandatory that a single
subnet is used. Anyone that reads things like that and has multiple
subnets is going to be immediately put off of SBs.

Something like generally advisable might be better, because in no way
is a single subset mandatory, either generally or otherwise.

[slim] Question on Favorites in Squeezecenter 7.0.1

2008-07-02 Thread chris.mason

I've just started using 7.0.1 after moving from 6.5..thought I'd give it

Quite like what I see so far.

I'm still trying to get used to/understand the various options and how
they compare to 6.5.

I was testing Favorites and I imported a playlist...which did work.
Unfortunately I now have 250 entries in Favorites, which I don't want.

Is there a way to bulk-edit favorites? I really don't want to have
delete each one individually...I'd rather wipe the installation and
start again.

Thanks

Re: [slim] music folders slow

2008-07-02 Thread moley6knipe

@ Jac - try www.mp3tag.de/en for organising your mp3 folders.

Here's the folder structure I use, and it works very well with
SqueezeCenter.

C:\Music\Artist\Album\01-track01.mp3; 02-track02.mp3 etc (for
single-artist discs)

C:\Music\COMPS\Album\01-track01.mp3; 02-track02.mp3 etc (for
compilations discs)

Quote - I cleaned my tags to the simplest it can be (only the title
and artist. no art, album, etc...)

I suspect your lack of Track and Album tags will cause problems,
especially if you don't have the Track Number in each file's file-name?
How do you get an album to play in the correct, ie as per the CD,
order?

mp3tag can automate a lot of things, but without the Track and Album
info anywhere you're in for a lot of manual tagging!

An easy first step would be to get mp3tag to create an Artist folder
structure from your mp3 files; it can do this by extracting everything
before the - in the filename, creating the folders and moving the
files. That will certainly help, I would think.

Post back if you want a hand using mp3tag!

Sure, although I think the detail from the light is actually pretty
similar to what you get on the SB3 display during setup. The day a

So, as you may know, the blue light means that the network connection is
live and DHCP worked, but that the connection to the server has failed.
Typically this means a subnet/routing or firewall issue, but it could
be something else.

You mentioned you have two wireless points, are both players associated

back to a single router/access point and powering down the other one.

I'd also try running the same versions on both servers so we can
eliminate (or not!) that as a variable. So put 7.1 on the windows box
or 7.0 on the linux one. Or try both if you're feeling exhaustive :)

You generally have to press play twice - you have to queue up tracks to
play on the SC web interface, start stream.mp3 on the remote player on
the remote machine (which won't play sound quite yet), then press play
on the SC web interface. Most software players will then start up
after a buffering pause, but with some you may have to stop and restart

[slim] Lobby for full menu entry in controller

2008-07-02 Thread Millwood

See http://bugs.slimdevices.com/show_bug.cgi?id=8217

Once you customize the controller main menu, it's a real pain to get to
any entries which are not shown and are not in the settings sub-tree.
You have to change the customization to show the entry, then use it,
then hide it again. And you have to navigate the sort of flat home
menu list to get to it - twice.

My proposal is that instead of forcing the home menu to contain
settings (which is of course done to avoid getting stuck) there should
be a new menu item - full menu (name subject to improvement) which
leads to the uncustomized menu tree.

One of the entries in that tree is settings, so you still can't get
stuck.

What full menu does, and maybe the easiest implementation, is to
suppress customization for a while - say until you pop out of it or go
to the home menu with the home key.

If you are constantly frustrated as I am - if you have too many entries
on your customized menu because you've put once a week stuff there -
then vote for 8217.

[slim] Duet with 5 GHz?

2008-07-02 Thread Peter Daub

I have had a lot of interference problems with both my laptop and duet.
The laptop is a macbook which is 802.11 enabled. Yesterday I purchased
an apple extreme and an apple express (to work as an extender for the
extreme). The configuration I originally chose was 802.11n (802.11
b/g) compatible. I figure that runs at 2.4 GHz. While the duet worked
on that setting, I was still having a lot of interference problems with
the laptop. So I changed the setting to 802.11n only (5 GHz). The
laptop is now blazingly fast, but I can't connect to the duet. Is
there any way to enable the duet to allow it to receive 5 GHz signals?

Linksys has a router that supposedly works simultaneously at 5 GHz and
2.4 GHz. And D-Link is coming out with one. Would that help me? One
problem with these devices is that, unlike the Apple extreme and
express, one can't purchase an extender to increase the range. I live
in an old house with thick walls in an urban environment.

Any help would be much appreciated. Peter

[slim] Change in Forum Unread Behavior

2008-07-02 Thread Millwood

It used to be that when I visited one of the forums, everything was
automagically marked as read.

No more.

Is there an option?

If not, could you add a mark all read button to the control bar - today
you have to navigate through forum tools - a delicate mouse operation.

Not directly, you could use a 5GHz bridge externally and connect it to
the ethernet port.

Have you tried different channels @ 2.4GHz?

I used that phrase because most folks don't need multiple subnets, most

I really don't think anyone is going to read the Wiki to make a buying

That's kind of an edge case :) I'm sure that once N is ratified and the
chipsets are down to the same prices as G now that the SB5 or whatever
it is will have N. There's just no reason for Logi to jump on the

Re: [slim] Slim Devices SB3 - not responding to remote.

2008-07-02 Thread unclepuncle

I went and bought brand new Logitech SB3 from PC World and the remote
from that works perfectly on the white Slim Devcies one.

Is there any way of getting the original white remote repaired - it
looks totally mint and there is nothing rattling inside it. It looks
hard to get inside it without damaging it though.

If the repair isn't possible I'd like to buy a backlit remote like the
one on the slim devcies website for $29.99 - anyone know how mcuh they
cost from Logitech (if they sell them at all).

Alternatively: Is there anyone (trust worthy) in the USA who could buy
one for me (funds sent in advance by paypal obviously) and then send it
on to me here.

There's a fault which has affected a few remotes where the LED solder
joints fail. It's pretty easy to fix if you're handy with a soldering
iron (or know someone who is). You should find instructions on the
forum somewhere if you search around.

Another option would be to get a universal remote - either one which
supports SB directly (such as the Logitech Harmony range) or one which
you can program from the working remote.

Yes, the SBR is essentially the same as an SB3 without the display and

The SBC menu system will be customizable, just like the SB3s. The

2008-07-02 Thread aubuti

The duration is the amount of *overlap* of the two tracks. So setting it
to zero is the same thing as turning off crossfade. Try setting it to
something like 5 seconds to see if you get the desired result.

Also note that in SC 7.0.x crossfade (as well as gapless playback) is
not available if you are streaming to multiple synchronized SBs. That
capability should be added in a subsequent release of SqueezeCenter,
probably 7.2.

2008-07-02 Thread Michael Herger
Thanks Michael - is there a case here for a bulk editing feature, or
are Favorites really aimed at listing just a few items?

I always wonder how many favorites one can have. I don't need more than my
remote has number buttons :-).

To answer your question: yes, Favorites are/were intended to be your few
golden tracks/stations. As we've seen demand for better customization
we'll probably enhance/change this feature in a future version.

Hello,

Every morning at 7:30 i use the alarm function to start up my

My wife is at home at the moment so it stays on the entire

In the evening i have to put it manually off.

Is there a solution so that like the alarmfunction i can put in a time
to poweroff the specific SB?

Carbonite.com and Moxy.com do what they do quite nicely. About $50
bucks a year and you have offsite backup that you don't have to
manage.

I wouldn't personally recommend Carbonite, if you are using it make
damn sure it is backing up the files you think it is. It has all sorts
of rules on what it will and won't backup, like for example if you have
a large video file that isn't in My Documents it won't back it up*.

Re: [slim] feature request: file vs track calculator

2008-07-02 Thread MrSinatra

2nd try, this time i'll be brief:

i want a calculation to compare/contrast the stats of the media
library, (specifically number of tracks), to the actual number of audio
files scanned.

if this could only be done in aggregate, so be it, but if it could be
done on a per folder/directory basis that would really be useful for
determining if SC actually accounts (in ML) for everything it scans,
(not always the case).

thoughts?

Save all the cue sheet to UTF-8 (instead of default ANSI) using

[slim] Title Format Comment not working correctly for MusicIP playlist in web UI

2008-07-02 Thread jbmccune

I have my Title Format set to Comment, because that allows me to
format my track display according to whatever convoluted rules I want
to follow for each track. :)

For the player UI, the web UI's artist/album browser on the left, and
the right-hand player part of the web UI that works great. However, if
I click on the M on the left part of the web UI to generate a MusicIP
playlist, the playlist that comes back on the left side of the screen
has by artist from album added to the Comment tag's text.

So, for example, if I set the Comment tag to 01 Track Name - Artist
Name - Album Name, the MusicIP playlist is displayed as 01 Track Name
- Artist Name - Album Name by Artist Name from Album Name

I guess this is a bug...? Is there an easy way for me to fix it
myself?

Thanks!

-Jesse

Re: [slim] feature request: file vs track calculator

2008-07-02 Thread aubuti

It's not something I've ever felt the need for, even after reading your
explanation of why you think it's needed. And if one wants to check
it's easy to do so using existing OS-level tools (e.g., in Windows: dir
*.flac *.mp3 *.wav /s). Although then if the grand total doesn't match
up it would be handy to have the per-directory breakdown you mention,
which should be pretty easy to put together in perl.

Anyway, your post has me thinking enough to go check the totals on my
library to see what I get.

identical performance) - but it hardly seems relevant in an office
situation.

Otherwise it is interesting that the more expensive (Duet) is actually

How do you get that the Duet is more expensive? The Duet is two things,
not one. The SBR on it's own costs considerably less than an SB3. An SB3
plus an SBC costs more than a Duet.

Re: [slim] feature request: file vs track calculator

2008-07-02 Thread MrSinatra

yes, i could use windows to get a file count but thats rather
cumbersome, and as u said it wouldn't help find the discrepancies, it
would just let you know you had some if that number was different from
the SC total songs (tracks) number.

i should be clear that i am requesting a feature here, not saying there
is a bug. but it would certainly help those affected by a bug, (like
me), and / or who are trying to track down character set issues and
other strange phenomena from keeping their music from showing up.

and the best part is, it would unmask a very masked issue. in other
words, you could have problems and never know it, b/c if your library
is large, (mine is imo, 25k+ audio files), then a random track missing
here or there, for whatever reason, could be very hard if not
impossible to notice.

i have seen a LOT of threads on this board about issues just like this
that such a feature would go a long way towards solving and
eliminating.

it would also be good for when winamp or mp3tag or whatever says one
thing, and SC says another, for figuring out who is correct.

Have you tried a factory level reset on the SB3? It retains the last
MAC address it was using in memory and doesn't reset it to the new
system automatically. There have been some previous threads regarding
this problem. One would think that if a new IP address has been
detected then the MAC address would be read from it, but it isn't. Only
a factory level reset will get it to re-read the MAC address.

I had to update NetWork drivers and enable it on the card.

After that I ran into the problem you describe here. I don't know what
MAC address it was using but it was wrong. Once I did that all was
well.

Thanks.

The 'dir' (or 'ls') command is cumbersome? Sorry, I don't see a
compelling, or even interesting, case for the enhancement. But it did
get me interested enough to check the totals (took all of about two
dozen keystrokes), and now I'll sleep well tonight. But maybe others
will see the same need you do. Good night and good luck.

when listening (or bothering to read the changelogs) to notice whether
it was a short gap or truly gapless.

Re: [slim] feature request: file vs track calculator

2008-07-02 Thread MrSinatra

let me try putting it another way, b/c think ur missing the point, and
i'll post my own screenshots later showing a discrepancy.

this function imo should be part of the normal scan routine, altho if
one wanted to opt out, ok. regardless the point is that with every
scan an automated doublecheck will make sure the two amounts are equal,
and that no known, or unknown, issue has crept in to keep SC from using
all the files it should.

i add music fairly often, and given the unpredictable nature of the
unexpected, along with the fact that the software itself is not static
in how it scans and handles files, such a function as what i am
proposing i think would be a welcome double check to ensure no
descrepancies exist, and if they do, it would help identify them.

this circumstance has been reported in the forums many times, and
moreover, its the kind of masked issue that could be affecting a lot of
people who are otherwise unaware of it. given its usefulness, i don't
see why someone wouldn't want it?

Re: [slim] feature request: file vs track calculator

2008-07-02 Thread MrSinatra

what, exactly, do u disagree with?

if i hadn't noticed the best AC/DC album in my ML was missing, which i
noticed purely by dumb luck and b/c it was back in black, i wouldn't
even have known anything was wrong. it led to me filing bug 8380

however, if this function was in place, SC would have alerted me to it
regardless of how unobservant i am.

but its not only bug 8380 that can cause tracks to not appear despite
being scanned. consider this case:

http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=48195

my proposed function would have really helped him out.

btw, i love streamripper, thx again for that.

I disagree with the idea that it should be a built-in feature of SC. I
don't think it's necessary. I think it would add to bloat and
complexity -- probably not by a lot, but enough so that the costs
outweigh the meager benefits. I expect SC to serve music, not to do my
basic file housekeeping for me. You asked thoughts? and I gave you
mine. Now I'll shut up and let others share their thoughts on your
suggestion.

Re: [slim] feature request: file vs track calculator

2008-07-02 Thread MrSinatra

i appreciate your thoughts, but i guess meager is a matter of POV.
certianly not meager if you're affected. i also expect SC to serve
music, but its hard for it to do it if it can't see it. i don't
consider these issues to be basic filekeeping but rather basic scanning
issues. the files exist just fine on the HD; its SC that isn't getting
them from there to the ML.

but in any case, yes, i hope others have some thoughts as well. thx
again.

Ok you can do a dir command. How many were added to you SC library? I
think MrSinatra's idea a good idea if it can be done without adding the
problems you are thinking would be inevitable. Maybe an added feature
you could run comparing music files in your folders to tracks in your
library. Not knowing how SC scans and if it has logs that can compare
something like this I think that it could solve a lot of peoples
problems, especially if it could point out the problem files. Even
something that could tell you if it was unable to find 2 of the major
tag areas missing like artist or album or title. While there are
suggestions on tags there really are no hard rules. It's learn as you
go and thats ok but something that lets you know why files are kicked
could really make a difference and finding them is the first thing.
Anything that helps people figure this system out is going to help make
it more mainstream and accepted.

[slim] Cannot load Squeezecenter in WM6 browser

2008-07-02 Thread smoj

This problem has been driving me nuts for the last 6 months or so. I
have an HTC 8925 which I want to stream music to from my Slimserver.
The phone has no trouble connecting using TCPMP (...:9000/stream.mp3),
but I have no way of controlling what is played through the phone, as
no browser will open (slimserver):9000 or (slimserver):9000/handheld.
I ultimately want to be able to (using Hamachi) stream my music
anywhere over 3G or Wifi.

When I first got the phone (before Squeezecenter), I had no trouble
loading the web interface, though it was noticeably quicker when I did
so using Hamachi. I have tried many different programs (Internet
Explorer, Opera, Slimremote, etc.) all without positive results.
Slimremote even seems to connect, but does not find a player or any
music. What I don't understand is how the media player can connect
successfully to slimserver when the web interface is nowhere to be
found.

Thanks in advance for any help or ideas.

As for the tapes, the other person who mentioned icecast has the right
idea. I would use FLAC instead of ogg, would save you a lot of CPU
 power on the server.

 Read this page:

 http://wiki.slimdevices.com/index.cgi?BeginnersGuideToRippingIf you doing a
lot of ripping go with dbpoweramp instead of EAC. The
new version is just so much better at tagging it will shorten your
ripping by quite a bit and you'll get better tags. The other thing
about ripping to flac is that you'll never have to re rip. It's
lossless and you can convert if something you like better comes along
that requires a different codec. And with dbpoweramp you already have
a converter that will be able to convert all your music.
