Re: [slim] HTTP 1.0 403 Access Forbidden when playiing mms Internet Radio
I think that what is happening is that the initial stream URL eventually results in a HTTP "Object moved" to redirect to a time-limited URL, which then requires use of MMS over TCP port 1755 (not HTTP port 80). Squeezebox/SqueezeCenter (and mplayer) probably trying to connect on port 80 - which, in the case at this particular station, results in 403 error because port 80 access is blocked on their streaming server. Asking the broadcaster to open up port 80 streaming might make the problem go away. -- Paul Webster Paul Webster http://www.lastfm.com/user/BondJamesBond Paul Webster's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=105 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=52995 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

Re: [slim] Now do the same with the Transporter!
One thing they could do is upgrade the display on the SB3, Receiver, Boom, Transporter... using the technology of Squeezeplay for a color display instead of the VFD display. I mean... the SqueezeOS platform is meant to be portable... you have it now on the Controller, soon we will have it on our Desktops (Linux, Windows, Mac) with Squeezeplay. And all Slim Devices products have in common the type of navigation and control... for example in the Transporter, Boom and Controller you navigate with a "wheel", a Transporter or Boom with a Color display could be implemented using SqueezeOS as the foundation, and the "wheel" will fit in nicely for the navigatio of the GUI part. And when Squeezeplay is released for our Desktops... it will include mouse navigation... which I think is a foundation to make a touch-enabled navigation system for a hardware product in the future (as it looks like many electronic products are taking that aproach right now). Re: [slim] Now do the same with the Transporter!
I believe Logitech has sufficiently widened the low end of the product line with some compelling hardware in the Duet and Boom. So what's next? Undercutting the Transporter with a product that has a lot more mass appeal. It's a matter of sales volume. If Logitech can sell a million SB4 units, they won't care that it cuts into the relatively small Transporter market. The SB3 is a very sweet product, but it could use a few incremental improvements. Hi-res music is becoming more mainstream; Logitech needs a mainstream player that can handle 24/96 files. And I have to believe there's a better DAC available for a player with a ~$500/$600 pricepoint. Maybe a component-sized case and a better power supply could be incorporated in an updated design. There's always room for improvement, and Slim/Logitech has always listened to its customers. The SB4 wouldn't have to be better than the Transporter, just better than the SB3. Slim/Logitech has made a brilliant product for $230. What can they build into a product selling for twice that price? -- Pale Blue Ego Pale Blue Ego's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=110 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=52983 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss
Re: [slim] Now do the same with the Transporter!
I would be equally amazed if there were anything released that could be called an "SB4". I suspect the SB3 is the end of the line for that approach as well. I can see some new products that would be variations of those already available. A receiver with an integrated power amplifier is almost a certainty. It further positions them against Sonos, and it's a higher margin bundle than the Duet that includes the expensive controller. Another idea is something with integrated amplifier, VFD and line and digital outputs (kind of a Boom without speakers, or a Squeezebox with integrated power amplifier and front panel controls, depending on how you want to look at it.) This is a product that I'd actually be interested in - much more so than I'm interested in the Duet or the Boom. If the amp were any good then you'd just add a quality pair of passive speakers. The front panel of the Boom is great - the knob in particular - and much better than that of the Transporter. It would just need a full width SB3 sized display, and a few more front panel buttons to work around the compromises of the Boom display and interface. -- JJZolx Jim JJZolx's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=10 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=52983 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

It would seem logical that the next step would be to add other media to the streaming capabilities. If streaming audio is emerging, then streaming video is in its infancy. Online streaming video services like Hulu and Joost are just starting out and are almost just concept designs - who knows if those models will take off. I'm fine with a new direction like this, as long as it isn't done at a compromise to the audio capabilities or force me to pay for video codec royalties when all I want to do is play audio. With the transporter, boom, SB3, duet, and soon to be player-enabled controller, they will have all bases covered regarding audio (high end, mid range, lower range, semi portable range, and portable range). What more is there to do other than have the newer products (i.e. Duet) mature to the level of the SB3? I'm not sure what an SB4 would be at this time other than a cost reduction design. So I agree with goodsounds - the dollars and cents sensabilities of Logitech will take them in other directions. I think the other direction will be video in some form. Thanks for your reply Mike. I guess I'm still a bit confused though. What specific part of the initial setup indicates that I am communicating to the receiver directly as opposed to connecting via a wireless access point, etc. ? A single, wired duet receiver and a user confined to the installed location with no other wireless devices nearby seems easy and obvious to me. It should work and work well. However, I believe it is common place for an installation environment to have one or more wired receivers as well as an unrelated wireless network. What happens when a user strolls throughout a home with good wireless coverage? Will the remote still function? I was under the impression that the remote is designed to detect new wireless coverage and connect to (or at least re-discover) the installed duets and control them. Then buy a Duet. If you need or want 24/96, pony up and buy a Transporter. Other then the better DAC and power supply, the Transporter is really all about the extra display area, rack mount size, TransNav controller knob, and "Audiophileness" of the unit. It is the flagship "no compromise" part of the NMP line-up. Audiophile wise, there might be something to be said for a less expensive Transporter Lite that has no DAC section for Audiophiles that wish to use an outboard DAC that costs 3 times what a Transporter does. I think most of these folks still want all the display and rack mount whistles though. And really the only reason other then the TransNav controller and display to want this is if they need 88.2 or 96KHz sampling frequencies because if not just buy an SB3 and use an external DAC of your choice. But as I have always said, if one is going to buy a Duet/SB3, linear power supply, and a really good DAC, one might as well just pony up for the Transporter and get the bells and whistles as well as the higher sampling frequency choices. I would like a Transporter Lite to go with my Dodson DA-217 MK2-D Digital Processor. But I am also very happy with what the Transporter does for me and don't run it into the Dodson. Transporter balanced out into my pre-amp suits me just fine. Note: When I sold my CD Transport, I could not bring myself to sell the Dodson because of the great deal I got it at (and some day I might buy another CDT). -- iPhone *iPhone* 'Last.FM' (http://www.last.fm/user/mephone) Media Room: Transporter, VTL TL-6.5 Signature Pre-Amp, Ayre MX-R Mono's, Vandersteen Quatro, VeraStarr 6.4SE 6-channel Amp, VCC-5 Reference Center, four VSM-1 Signatures, Runco RS 900 CineWide AutoScope 2.35:1 Living Room: Duet, ADCOM GTP-870HD, Cinepro 3K6SE III Gold, Vandersteen Model 3A Signature, Two 2Wq subs, VCC-2, Two VSM-1 Kitchen: Squeezebox BOOM Bedroom: SB3, GFR-700HD, Thiel 2.3, Second Boom Home Office: SB3, NAD C370, two VSM-1 Home Gym: SB3, Parasound Vamp v.3, Thiel PowerPoint 1.2 Mobile: SB3, Audioengine A5 iPhone's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=13622 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=52983 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss
Re: [slim] Now do the same with the Transporter!
So, you missed the whole point. The reason that the Transporter is expensive is not just the price tag of the parts inside, but the R&D it took to design it was very high. It's also not marketed at people wanting it cheaper. If you think it's too expensive, buy a Squeezebox of some kind. It's not going to get cheaper, it's not going to drop feature FOO to make it cheaper. Smaller on the other hand is easy.. it's 80% empty space inside the box. -- SuperQ SuperQ's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=2139 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=52983 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss
Re: [slim] MusicIp causing a rescan - why?
Phil, the update to the plugin is great. I wasn't bothered by the scan speed, as I always do a complete rescan every night. However, the use of SqueezeCentre's scan of the tag data is far better than MusicIP and I now get the expected impact of tag changes. I'll look and see if any other threads (many that I've trawled in vain) may also benefit from this fix (they'll need to know even when this is included in 7.3). -- DigitalMitch DigitalMitch's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=15999 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=48422 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

[slim] Now do the same with the Transporter!
Many moons ago I responded to a thread on the audiophile forum asking what people thought should be changed if there was ever to be a Transporter V2 released. My suggestion was that a cheaper version of the Transporter would be a good idea, my argument being that significant cost reduction could be made by reducing the screen display size to a minimum and reducing the size of the unit itself. My reasoning was that I would love to be able to have a Transporter for the sound quality offered, and would be prepared to sacrifice these things if it made it more affordable. Needless to say, my suggestion was shot down by a number of 'audiophiles'. However since then, the Duet has been released (small and with no screen) and more recently the Squeezebox Boom, with a reduced screen size and even a smaller remote. So my question is, having seen the Duet and the Boom, would anybody be interested in a (cheaper) Transporter offering the same sound quality but losing some of the other features. -- PLynas PLynas's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=11960 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=52983 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

If you still have a problem feel free to file a bug report at bugs.slimdevices.com. You'll need to create a new sign-in, but that's the proper place for bug reports/tracking. [slim] SB3 (x2) Extremely unstable with SC 7.2
Recently upgraded to SC 7.2 and now my 2 SB3s are just about worthless... Constantly freezing up, disconnecting from wireless, and plain shutting down. I play mainly Random Mix on my Duet from a 38,000 tune library. When I press skip several times , the remote freezes then takes a minute to reconnect to the server. [slim] Jumping to next song in Random Play
Since upgrading to SC7 (currently on 7.2) I have noticed some songs stop momentarily part way through and then the SB3 moves to the next song in the random list and continues playing. If I step back to the 'rogue' song it plays through normally. Most of my listening is on Random Song Mix so not sure if this is a problem specific to that mode. Songs (13,000) are FLAC encoded on to a ReadyNAS NV with SC running on a Dell headless server XP. Oddly, I have not noticed this behaviour with my Transporter operating on Random Mix. Anyone else seen (heard) this? Could it be SB3 specific? I have removed 'crossfade' but I am at a loss to think what else could be causing the problem. Suggestions most appreciated. There are at least a few ways to get the sound to your boxes. The quickest would be to use the Wave Input plugin - it's a soundboard capture thing. You'd play the audible file on your PC using normal Audible method, WaveInput snags the sound and passes it to SC. But the control would be at your PC, for whatever the software is that plays the Audible file. The second choice is a bit more time consuming, but also works. Google around and you'll get some ideas on what to do, using free software. -- Goodsounds Goodsounds's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=14201 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=46471 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

What is the content of the playlists? Local files, radio stations, music services like Last.fm? I have seen behaviour like this with radio stations urls, but this was a bug in 7.1 that AFAIK is fixed in 7.2. I also see that behaviour if I try to create a radio station with a Last.fm playlist, so there may be a specific issue around putting music services into playlists. -- Siduhe Who am I on 'LAST.FM' (http://www.last.fm/user/siduhe)? Non, I agree with most of your comments. It will be interesting to see where things are a year plus from now. I wouldn't think Logitech bought Slim Devices just to play in a niche market. But, as you allude to, the company needs to get more "average user friendly", and a fair number of the cranky gearheads around here work at cross purposes to such an effort. Personally, I think a market surge could happen if and when the products become of greater interest to and more easily accessible by soccer moms and soccer dads. The Boom is a start - a product with wider distribution and perhaps wider market acceptance. So if you wish to play saved files or use the Controller, you will have to upgrade from SS to SC 7.x. The new SC is fairly good and has many new features that you might like as well as use. I don't know if the Controller has been updated/improved since actual retail production started. I believe the biggest change was between the Jive prototype antenna to the actual production antenna. If you are worried about the outdoor range, I think the bigger issue will end up being the display. It is not an outdoor glare proof design. The device is mainly an indoor device so it would have to be used in the shade or hooding the display with your body or hand. Not that I don't think that you would enjoy SC 7.x or even a Controller, but if you think you will be changing your music often outdoors, you might look at iPeng on an iTouch or iPhone. Re: [slim] Duet: firmware 55? Controller hardware update?
Thanks for the reply. The last version I tried was squeezecenter-7.0-17793 back in May so I'll try the latest and see what happens. For the amp, I bought item 320238699615 from ebay.co.uk. There are some other similar designs around. In fact it was about 16 quid with postage, but an even cheaper one I just found and hadn't spotted before is 110291419641. Search for "mp3 amplifier". The amp was even smaller than I expected and ideal for that. Mine has what may be a dry joint on one of the power connections as a couple of times power came on and then went off, but once it's running it's fine with bass around mid-way and treble wound right up. Speakers are omni directional GS5's from www.outdooraudio.co.uk. Despite positive reviews, expectations weren't great frankly and when tried singly (they are sold in pairs) a single speaker sounded ok although rather like a speaker in a plastic tub buried in the ground which is exactly what it is. The products are widely used in theme parks, and the garden sounded like ... a theme park. However with both running and at a decent separation, the sound was much better, enveloping and enjoyable, and it should be great in the summer as long as it doesn't upset neighbours. -- ioncube ioncube's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=2212 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=52959 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss
