I've tried a few times to connect and always had the same redirect ...
so maybe the URL is not time-limited ... so try this:

(yes - it is that odd)

Re: [slim] HTTP 1.0 403 Access Forbidden when playiing mms Internet Radio

2008-09-23 Thread Paul Webster

I think that what is happening is that the initial stream URL eventually
results in a HTTP "Object moved" to redirect to a time-limited URL,
which then requires use of MMS over TCP port 1755 (not HTTP port 80).
Squeezebox/SqueezeCenter (and mplayer) probably trying to connect on
port 80 - which, in the case at this particular station, results in 403
error because port 80 access is blocked on their streaming server.

Asking the broadcaster to open up port 80 streaming might make the
problem go away.

Re: [slim] Now do the same with the Transporter!

2008-09-23 Thread pichonCalavera

One thing they could do is upgrade the display on the SB3, Receiver,
Boom, Transporter... using the technology of Squeezeplay for a color
display instead of the VFD display. I mean... the SqueezeOS platform is
meant to be portable... you have it now on the Controller, soon we will
have it on our Desktops (Linux, Windows, Mac) with Squeezeplay.

And all Slim Devices products have in common the type of navigation and
control... for example in the Transporter, Boom and Controller you
navigate with a "wheel", a Transporter or Boom with a Color display
could be implemented using SqueezeOS as the foundation, and the "wheel"
will fit in nicely for the navigatio of the GUI part.

And when Squeezeplay is released for our Desktops... it will include
mouse navigation... which I think is a foundation to make a
touch-enabled navigation system for a hardware product in the future
(as it looks like many electronic products are taking that aproach
right now).

Just specultaion!

Re: [slim] Now do the same with the Transporter!

2008-09-23 Thread Pale Blue Ego

I believe Logitech has sufficiently widened the low end of the product
line with some compelling hardware in the Duet and Boom. So what's
next?

Undercutting the Transporter with a product that has a lot more mass
appeal. It's a matter of sales volume. If Logitech can sell a million
SB4 units, they won't care that it cuts into the relatively small
Transporter market.

The SB3 is a very sweet product, but it could use a few incremental
improvements. Hi-res music is becoming more mainstream; Logitech needs
a mainstream player that can handle 24/96 files. And I have to believe
there's a better DAC available for a player with a ~$500/$600
pricepoint. Maybe a component-sized case and a better power supply
could be incorporated in an updated design. There's always room for
improvement, and Slim/Logitech has always listened to its customers.
The SB4 wouldn't have to be better than the Transporter, just better
than the SB3.

Slim/Logitech has made a brilliant product for $230. What can they
build into a product selling for twice that price?

Re: [slim] Now do the same with the Transporter!

2008-09-23 Thread JJZolx

I would be equally amazed if there were anything released that could be
called an "SB4". I suspect the SB3 is the end of the line for that
approach as well.

I can see some new products that would be variations of those already
available. A receiver with an integrated power amplifier is almost a
certainty. It further positions them against Sonos, and it's a higher
margin bundle than the Duet that includes the expensive controller.

Another idea is something with integrated amplifier, VFD and line and
digital outputs (kind of a Boom without speakers, or a Squeezebox with
integrated power amplifier and front panel controls, depending on how
you want to look at it.) This is a product that I'd actually be
interested in - much more so than I'm interested in the Duet or the
Boom. If the amp were any good then you'd just add a quality pair of
passive speakers. The front panel of the Boom is great - the knob in
particular - and much better than that of the Transporter. It would
just need a full width SB3 sized display, and a few more front panel
buttons to work around the compromises of the Boom display and
interface.

[slim] HTTP 1.0 403 Access Forbidden when playiing mms Internet Radio

2008-09-23 Thread theta

When SqueezeBox 3 plays internet radio with SqueezeCenter 7.1 or 7.2 (I
uninstalled 7.1 first, then reboot Windows XP, then intsalled 7.2), SB3
got " HTTP 1.0 403 Access Forbidden ", I can play these internet radios
(see below URL link) with Microsoft Media Player and SoftSqueeze 3.5 in
my laptop or other desktop computers without any problem.

I checked the "HTTP 1.0 403 Access Forbidden" in Microsoft, it said,
try removing Language in the IE-->Tiools-->Internet

If you already own a Duet, all you really need to buy is an SBR
(Squeezebox Receiver) for $149 from the statements you made above. Only
get another Duet if you just "HAVE" to have another Controller. The
Controller you have now with work fine with what you already have and
as many other Squeezeboxes you add whether it be an SB3, SBR, Boom, or
Transporter.

Google around for anything and you'll find horror stories if that's what
you're looking for (just look at this forum!). I don't personally run
Vista but everyone I know who do have no problems with it. Home
networking/file sharing can always throw up interesting problems, and
Vista certainly isn't immune to those, but I don't know of any reason
to think a Vista/XP combo will be any harder that Vista/Vista or XP/XP
- particularly if you take time to understand the differences (such as
the new security model).

It would seem logical that the next step would be to add other media to
the streaming capabilities. If streaming audio is emerging, then
streaming video is in its infancy. Online streaming video services
like Hulu and Joost are just starting out and are almost just concept
designs - who knows if those models will take off. I'm fine with a new
direction like this, as long as it isn't done at a compromise to the
audio capabilities or force me to pay for video codec royalties when
all I want to do is play audio.

With the transporter, boom, SB3, duet, and soon to be player-enabled
controller, they will have all bases covered regarding audio (high end,
mid range, lower range, semi portable range, and portable range). What
more is there to do other than have the newer products (i.e. Duet)
mature to the level of the SB3? I'm not sure what an SB4 would be at
this time other than a cost reduction design.

So I agree with goodsounds - the dollars and cents sensabilities of
Logitech will take them in other directions. I think the other
direction will be video in some form.

After Slim Devices (and then Logitech) and Sonos kicked Roku's butt,
they backed up and are now pushing the Netflix box.

Googling for file sharing between XP and Vista returns a nightmare of

Honest to goodness, a computer programmer friend last night commented,

Re: [slim] Duet communication with nearby WAP

2008-09-23 Thread propup

Thanks for your reply Mike.
I guess I'm still a bit confused though. What specific part of the
initial setup indicates that I am communicating to the receiver
directly as opposed to connecting via a wireless access point, etc. ?

A single, wired duet receiver and a user confined to the installed
location with no other wireless devices nearby seems easy and obvious
to me. It should work and work well.

However, I believe it is common place for an installation environment
to have one or more wired receivers as well as an unrelated wireless
network.

What happens when a user strolls throughout a home with good wireless
coverage? Will the remote still function? I was under the impression
that the remote is designed to detect new wireless coverage and connect
to (or at least re-discover) the installed duets and control them. It
sounds as if the result is entirely dependent on the initial setup?

[slim] Network with XP Home and Vista

2008-09-23 Thread SadieKate

I’m considering buying an Acer Aspire L5100 desktop to put upstairs in
the family room to store/run FLAC files primarily but also give our
frequent guests internet access (so they don’t need my computer). This
computer would be wired to the rangebooster. I have two Dell laptops
running off the same router: 1) my personal pc using XP Home and
wireless and 2) a business laptop using XP Pro but is dialed into a VPN
most of the time and shouldn’t really get mixed up with file sharing to
the other two. I’d like to be able to access the FLAC files on the
desktop from my personal laptap via SqueezeCenter. It is, of course,
incredible easy to find good deals on desktops with Vista but not so
with XP. Add to that I know nothing about file sharing or Vista. Am
I asking for trouble to have one XP computer and one Vista computer and
attempt to share files?

I have three Squeezebox in the house running on the current network if
that makes any difference to the discussion.

Re: [slim] Controller doesn't reconnect to network after sleep - Please post your issues

Has anyone experiencing either Controller or Receiver disconnecting/not
reconnecting made changes to their DHCP lease time?

I'm curious if there is a connection to short DHCP lease times. Also,
anyone using 7.3? Thanks again!

Re: [slim] Duet communication with nearby WAP

2008-09-23 Thread mvalera

The Controller either connects through your wireless network, or in
Bridged mode thru a wired Receiver.

It's a one or the other choice of mode, and you chose the method during
initial setup only. The only way to switch between the two wireless
modes is to repeat initial setup.

Then buy a Duet. If you need or want 24/96, pony up and buy a
Transporter. Other then the better DAC and power supply, the
Transporter is really all about the extra display area, rack mount
size, TransNav™ controller knob, and "Audiophileness" of the unit. It
is the flagship "no compromise" part of the NMP line-up.

Audiophile wise, there might be something to be said for a less
expensive Transporter Lite that has no DAC section for Audiophiles that
wish to use an outboard DAC that costs 3 times what a Transporter does.
I think most of these folks still want all the display and rack mount
whistles though. And really the only reason other then the TransNav™
controller and display to want this is if they need 88.2 or 96KHz
sampling frequencies because if not just buy an SB3 and use an external
DAC of your choice.

But as I have always said, if one is going to buy a Duet/SB3, linear
power supply, and a really good DAC, one might as well just pony up for
the Transporter and get the bells and whistles as well as the higher
sampling frequency choices.

I would like a Transporter Lite to go with my Dodson DA-217 MK2-D
Digital Processor. But I am also very happy with what the Transporter
does for me and don't run it into the Dodson. Transporter balanced out
into my pre-amp suits me just fine.

Note: When I sold my CD Transport, I could not bring myself to sell the
Dodson because of the great deal I got it at (and some day I might buy
another CDT).

Re: [slim] Now do the same with the Transporter!

2008-09-23 Thread SuperQ

So, you missed the whole point. The reason that the Transporter is
expensive is not just the price tag of the parts inside, but the R&D
it took to design it was very high. It's also not marketed at people
wanting it cheaper. If you think it's too expensive, buy a Squeezebox
of some kind.

It's not going to get cheaper, it's not going to drop feature FOO to
make it cheaper.

Smaller on the other hand is easy.. it's 80% empty space inside the
box.

Re: [slim] MusicIp causing a rescan - why?

2008-09-23 Thread DigitalMitch

Phil, the update to the plugin is great.

I wasn't bothered by the scan speed, as I always do a complete rescan
every night.

However, the use of SqueezeCentre's scan of the tag data is far better
than MusicIP and I now get the expected impact of tag changes.

I'll look and see if any other threads (many that I've trawled in vain)
may also benefit from this fix (they'll need to know even when this is
included in 7.3).

OK, so one last bit of setup to do. I don't know why, but the default
decibel range that software installs with is often unsuitable. Adjust
those settings and you'll be happy.

If you talk nice to support and get their permission first... (since
this will void your warranty otherwise), it may be the same problem I
had...

My SBC bounced off the floor a few times (I have the most ungraceful of

Opening it up and reseating the wireless card fixed the problem.

You need a T-4 (i think) driver, which is a couple bucks at any decent

[slim] Now do the same with the Transporter!

2008-09-23 Thread PLynas

Many moons ago I responded to a thread on the audiophile forum asking
what people thought should be changed if there was ever to be a
Transporter V2 released. My suggestion was that a cheaper version of
the Transporter would be a good idea, my argument being that
significant cost reduction could be made by reducing the screen display
size to a minimum and reducing the size of the unit itself. My reasoning
was that I would love to be able to have a Transporter for the sound
quality offered, and would be prepared to sacrifice these things if it
made it more affordable.

Needless to say, my suggestion was shot down by a number of
'audiophiles'. However since then, the Duet has been released (small
and with no screen) and more recently the Squeezebox Boom, with a
reduced screen size and even a smaller remote.

So my question is, having seen the Duet and the Boom, would anybody be
interested in a (cheaper) Transporter offering the same sound quality
but losing some of the other features.

Re: [slim] BUG: SC 7.2, classic, Firefox 3.0.1

2008-09-23 Thread kdf

Seems to work ok here (winxp, ff 3.0.1, sc 7.2.1). True, what I have a
slightly newer but the code for classic skin hasn't changed in that
area since the release of 7.2.

The link for text view (shows in the status bar at the bottom) while in
text mode should be "javascript:toggleGalleryView(1)", tooltip says
"Large Artwork". In gallery mode, 1 changes to 0 with a tooltip of
"text only".

If this is not the case, please try clearing your browser cache and try
the steps again. If you still have a problem feel free to file a bug
report at bugs.slimdevices.com. You'll need to create a new sign-in,
but that's the proper place for bug reports/tracking.

You may also wish to try the firebug addon for FF which can report any
javascript errors. Those would be useful notes to add to the report
when someone tries to locate the problem (especially if they, too,
cannot duplicate the problem)

Re: [slim] SB3 (x2) Extremely unstable with SC 7.2

2008-09-23 Thread kdf

To help you know whats going on:

SB3 Reset - you'll see the logitech logo as it boots up again

SB3 wireless/network problem - display/IR response not happening, but
if you check your server computer SC is still running. IR and display
just magically start working again when wireless comes back. You should
still be able to press-and-hold the left arrow button and get into the
SB3 setup menu.

SC failing - application no longer running, or if you have it set up as
a service, there should be a note in the event viewer. You will also be
able to press and hold left to return to setup in this case as well.

Also, look for server.log in

SB3 Firmware updated. SP3 done for about a month prior to problems.
Wireless laptops connecting fine. Hard to tell what is or is not
happening with the SB3 / SC / wireless connectivity as the screen goes
blank on the SB3s, freezes up, or reboots on its own... :(

Nothing new on the PC running SC...

Helpful?

Did either of you guys remove the original Plugin? IE delete the old
directories. Try removing the old plugin parts, re-enter your info and
save it in the new built-in menu, and then reboot the server.

This is what solved my Last.FM conflict. As to iTune 8.0, have a search
around the Forum as I seem to remember it causing some issue with
something (can't remember what it was or which Forum it was for that
matter).

No you can't change the now playing order like that on the Controller.
You can do that on the iPhone/Touch with the iPeng plugin though.

Great though the iPeng plugin is however, it doesn't compare for
responsiveness with the Controller. The Controller is still better to
use that iPeng. Maybe that will change with the native version of
iPeng.

How are you searching for the songs on the Controller? By Artist name

Also, can you browse to the songs under the Music Library (for example

If the album is a compilation the songs won't come up on an Artist

Re: [slim] playlists not persistent

2008-09-23 Thread Siduhe

Curiouser and curiouser...

I would turn on playlist debugging, create a fresh playlist in SC, save
it, then do a playlist only rescan. Then have a look at scanner.log.
It should give you an idea where things are going wrong.

I would still guess at permissions - because the type of behaviour you
describe would normally occur where SC scans the file but can't access
it so removes it from the library, but what you set out below looks
right to me. All it should need is execute access over the playlist
folder AFAIK.

Thanks for the response. Any idea why the top line on the display is
regular, and the bottom line is bold?
To me, the regular font looks neater, and you would get more characters
if this were used on the Bottom line!

I play mainly Random Mix on my Duet from a 38,000 tune library. When I

[slim] Jumping to next song in Random Play

2008-09-23 Thread Heuer

Since upgrading to SC7 (currently on 7.2) I have noticed some songs stop
momentarily part way through and then the SB3 moves to the next song in
the random list and continues playing. If I step back to the 'rogue'
song it plays through normally. Most of my listening is on Random Song
Mix so not sure if this is a problem specific to that mode. Songs
(13,000) are FLAC encoded on to a ReadyNAS NV with SC running on a Dell
headless server XP. Oddly, I have not noticed this behaviour with my
Transporter operating on Random Mix.

Anyone else seen (heard) this? Could it be SB3 specific? I have removed
'crossfade' but I am at a loss to think what else could be causing the
problem. Suggestions most appreciated.

Thanks

There are at least a few ways to get the sound to your boxes. The
quickest would be to use the Wave Input plugin - it's a soundboard
capture thing. You'd play the audible file on your PC using normal
Audible method, WaveInput snags the sound and passes it to SC. But the
control would be at your PC, for whatever the software is that plays
the Audible file.

The second choice is a bit more time consuming, but also works. Google
around and you'll get some ideas on what to do, using free software.

That's right - I'm the author. I maintain it for SqueezeBox standard
remote; I don't have a SqueezeBox controller, and there's no software
emulator for that, so there's no way I could write it. It would need
completely different code (SqueezeOS) for it.

Several people have asked for this - I should update my website (and
plugin wiki page) to make it clear that this is for SB
PlayerUI/standard remote control only.

a bug in 7.1 that AFAIK is fixed in 7.2. I also see that behaviour if
I try to create a radio station with a Last.fm playlist, so there may
be a specific issue around putting music services into playlists.

Ugh. I suppose this was bound to happen, general-purpose dot matrix
VFD displays just aren't that popular anymore in consumer devices (as
opposed to customized displays for AV receivers, DVD players etc.)

I love the VFD contrast ratio, readability at a distance and
brightness.

It's the cost, power inefficiency and heat output that are the issues.
Too bad.

Re: [slim] Controller doesn't reconnect to network after sleep - Please post your issues

2008-09-23 Thread micah

I may not be seeing the same thing as described in this thread. I let
my controller go to sleep overnight and tried to start it this morning.
I pressed the on button this morning while it took over 5 minutes to
connect to the receiver, it did so without any other problems. I never
saw a blue light on the controller - the screen was locked in the circle
of dots for the entire 5 minutes. I'll post again if I have the problem
you are describing.

Your welcome Nick. I want back and did an edit of my post. When I was
speaking of the display outdoors, I was talking about the display on
the Controller itself. The Controller display tends to wash out in
direct sunlight. The great thing about the SBR (Receiver) is that it is
perfect for outdoor or hidden use because it has no display to worry
about. Good luck.

If the garden design had similar type rocks then I'd have been tempted,
although I think that the rocks are directional and would give a more
focussed sound than the omni speakers. The omnis should give more
flexibility for listening position. There are also problems with foxes
and cats abusing features of the garden so maybe the speakers will be
useful for part of my active animal deterrent project (motion triggered
water jets) as the lion poo didn't work.

Re: [slim] Angry about Tranporter + SqueezeCenter

2008-09-23 Thread Goodsounds

Non, I agree with most of your comments.

It will be interesting to see where things are a year plus from now. I
wouldn't think Logitech bought Slim Devices just to play in a niche
market. But, as you allude to, the company needs to get more "average
user friendly", and a fair number of the cranky gearheads around here
work at cross purposes to such an effort.

Personally, I think a market surge could happen if and when the
products become of greater interest to and more easily accessible by
soccer moms and soccer dads. The Boom is a start - a product with wider
distribution and perhaps wider market acceptance.

In the meantime, I like my equipment, I hope the Slim effort is
successful for Logitech and all employees concerned, and I wish
everyone well.

Thanks for that, the display was another thing to wonder about. I'm not
too concerned about range as I've cabled CAT5 to the garden so can run
another hotspot there if needed, although I'd probably improve the
antenna on the existing router as first preference. I figure that the
controller will definitely be useful indoors, and the garden player
doesn't need a display as it'll be enclosed somewhere out of reach
anyway, so the Duet package will give me two items that are certainly
useful, but maybe the controller won't be best for the garden. Thanks
for some alternatives to consider!

[slim] Duet communication with nearby WAP

2008-09-23 Thread propup

Hello. I'm trying to troubleshoot some comm problems / lockups with Duet
controller / receivers and have a general question (sort of)

Let's say I have a WIRED Duet receiver in a location that also happens
to be in a good to excellent WIFI area due to a nearby installed WAP in
the LAN.

Will the Duet remote reliably see the receiver via it's own radio, hop
back and forth between it's own radio and the WAP, latch on to the WAP
to get to the Duet receiver, or some weird combination of the above?

Appreciate any insight on this.

Thanks and clearly I'll have to upgrade, although 6.3.1 has been a
fairly golden version for me. So far I've two SB3's and one SB2, all
wireless, and with the SB2 very conveniently also serving as a bridge
for a Siemens DECT/SIP phone base station that only has a 10-baseT
wired port. Very rarely any wireless problems with a Vigor 2800
(although a vigor FW upgrade was required), and synchronisation has
generally been fine too.

Hello Nick,
Both the Receiver and Controller (IE a Duet) require SC 7.x or the new
SqueezeNetwork. So if you wish to play saved files or use the
Controller, you will have to upgrade from SS to SC 7.x. The new SC is
fairly good and has many new features that you might like as well as
use.

I don't know if the Controller has been updated/improved since actual
retail production started. I believe the biggest change was between the
Jive prototype antenna to the actual production antenna. If you are
worried about the outdoor range, I think the bigger issue will end up
being the display. It is not an outdoor glare proof design. The device
is mainly an indoor device so it would have to be used in the shade or
hooding the display with your body or hand.

Not that I don't think that you would enjoy SC 7.x or even a
Controller, but if you think you will be changing your music often
outdoors, you might look at iPeng on an iTouch or iPhone. I believe the
early versions of iPeng still run on SS. Just another possible option.

Re: [slim] Duet: firmware 55? Controller hardware update?

2008-09-23 Thread ioncube

Thanks for the reply. The last version I tried was
squeezecenter-7.0-17793 back in May so I'll try the latest and see what
happens.

For the amp, I bought item 320238699615 from ebay.co.uk. There are some
other similar designs around. In fact it was about 16 quid with postage,
but an even cheaper one I just found and hadn't spotted before is
110291419641. Search for "mp3 amplifier".

The amp was even smaller than I expected and ideal for that. Mine has
what may be a dry joint on one of the power connections as a couple of
times power came on and then went off, but once it's running it's fine
with bass around mid-way and treble wound right up. Speakers are omni
directional GS5's from www.outdooraudio.co.uk. Despite positive
reviews, expectations weren't great frankly and when tried singly (they
are sold in pairs) a single speaker sounded ok although rather like a
speaker in a plastic tub buried in the ground which is exactly what it
is. The products are widely used in theme parks, and the garden sounded
like ... a theme park. However with both running and at a decent
separation, the sound was much better, enveloping and enjoyable, and it
should be great in the summer as long as it doesn't upset neighbours.
