Do yourself a favor and convert the WAVs to FLAC with proper tagging.
It'll be easier for you and for us :-). FLAC is lossless, no difference to
WAV, bit by bit.

I've done the "VOL+ thing" numerous times (my risk if i use svn
checkout's ;-) and it worked always (ADD+ clears settings).
The way i do roll backs is by disabling auto-update in SC, removing any
leftovers from cache folder and copying of the desired firmware version
to the controller's sd-card (see 'wiki'
- assumes the SBC is still in shape to do an udate itself.

Re: [slim] How good a wireless signal is good enough?

2008-10-21 Thread DeVerm

It is important to understand that signal strength is not the important
thing to watch; the signal-to-noise-ratio is what counts and many
routers will list that in dB (or they list both signal and noise in dB,
subtract them and you have the ratio). Also, some routers give a "signal
quality" which is basically the good value but converted to some
percentage presentation.

In other words: a weak signal is okay as long as it's still stronger
than the noise.

cheers,
Nick.

Re: [slim] SBC: "Now Playing" Wrong - Not Refreshing

2008-10-21 Thread DeVerm

I see this sometimes and I suspect the following to be related:

1. happens more often while playing random song list and fiddling with
that list like adding another song, especially when adding it to "play
next"

2. after I increased the number of songs to be displayed in the random
playlist to 50 (from default 10 or so) it happened more often.

When I start a random playback and don't fiddle with the list, it
doesn't happen at all.

my controller back to the factory setting. I had previously installed
the Lyrics add-in and tried to install a game someone had written for
the controller - I did not reinstall them after the reset, so I don't
know if they were the original cause.

Try the factory reset - I seemed pretty painless and it's worked since.

Re: [slim] seeking into a flac/cuesheet

2008-10-21 Thread gharris999

Seeking withing a track on single-file-per-cd flacs with cuesheets isn't
supported by SqueezeCenter. But this feature has been in the request
hopper since 2005: http://bugs.slimdevices.com/show_bug.cgi?id=1426

This issue can't be solved until SC nativly supports this format.
Currently, flacs of this type are transcoded on the fly by SC using the
flac executable. This fact prevents any possibility of intra-track
seeking. There is no quick and easy fix.

Josh Calson, the developer of flac, provided a theoretical solution to
this problem back in 2005. With all the work being done now on new
streaming, it's looking better and better for the possibility of this
feature making it into SC 7.3.

pippin,

I feel the need to respectfully correct you. Technically you don't
"HAVE TO" go through the AppStore. Apple's heavy handed tactics for
controlling the platform has many developers upset. Waiting endlessly
to have apps approved (and often not being approved for ambiguous
reasons), together with their ultra-restrictive terms in the SDK
agreement, has many developers pretty fed up.

The AppStore was supposed to kill the iPhone Jailbroken apps, but seems
to still be feeding the need for it.

The AppStore is obviously the best way to profit from iPhone
development. It has wide spread distribution access to potentially
every single iPhone user. But many developers are still making money
by selling Jailbroken apps via Cydia, when Apple feels the need to
restrict their trade. Jailbreaking is safe, easy, and opens the
iPhone's full potential.

I can only hope that if for some reason, known only by Apple, Luke's or
your apps get rejected, that you will consider going the Cydia route.

Good luck to both of you, and we all look forward to the fruits of your
labors.

P.S. A Sonos controller app just showed up in the AppStore today.

Awesome, 7.2.1 isn't in the debian repo yet, but I tested it with
squeezecenter_7.2.1~23629_all.deb and it does the basic apparmor fix
correctly. It doesn't fix it for people who upgrade to 8.04 with it
already installed, but oh well, that will hopefully be a rare case.

In SC, build a playlist called -Alarm 1-. Put whatever songs you want
to wake up to in the playlist and save it. Now go back to alarm setup
and for alarm music pick -Alarm 1- under the drop down playlist.

That didn't do it. It cleared all of my settings :-(, but did not roll

went back to 7.2 and that cleared the firmware out of the Controller. I

Re: [slim] Volume sensitivity

2008-10-21 Thread bpa

An extract from the code in file Squeezebox2.pm

AFAICT the volume ramp is table driven and non linear - finer at low
volume than at high volume.

Also you need to get confirmation from developers that the volume ramp
is the same for all products. I think Boom has fine control at low
volume as users in bed complained of not being able to go quiet enough
when going to sleep.

Code:

  # The original Squeezebox2 firmware supported a fairly narrow volume range
  # below unity gain - 129 levels on a linear scale represented by a 1.7
  # fixed point number (no sign, 1 integer, 7 fractional bits).
  # From FW 22 onwards, volume is sent as a 16.16 value (no sign, 16 integer,
  # 16 fractional bits), significantly increasing our fractional range.
  # Rather than test for the firmware level, we send both values in the
  # volume message.

  # We thought about sending a dB scale volume to the client, but decided
  # against it. Sending a fixed point multiplier allows us to change
  # the mapping of UI volume settings to gain as we want, without being
  # constrained by any scale other than that of the fixed point range allowed
  # by the client.

  # Old style volume:
  # we only have 129 levels to work with now, and within 100 range,
  # that's pretty tight.
  # this table is optimized for 40 steps (like we have in the current player UI.
  my @volume_map = (
  0, 1, 1, 1, 2, 2, 2, 3, 3, 4,
  5, 5, 6, 6, 7, 8, 9, 9, 10, 11,
  12, 13, 14, 15, 16, 16, 17, 18, 19, 20,
  22, 23, 24, 25, 26, 27, 28, 29, 30, 32,

Now that we are talking about this, I remember being confused about this

Hopefully this is the issue that the OP has run into.

... that should work. I would think it should charge even if the SBC is

In SqueezeCenter settings, I believe it's under Player and the Audio
there is a volume setting. Make sure this is set at 0. It actually
works as an attenuator so any number you put in there will decrease the
player output.

I'm not at home so I can't check where it is for sure. Can anyone
verify this for him?

There is a volume difference between SC and SN on every Slim Device I
have on my network. Basically, we are dealing with two different
sources.

My question for you is what inputs are you using for what devices? Are
you comparing line level to line level between a SB and a CD.

Ah, yes, I believe you are right. I actually never turn mine off. Mine

So this begs the question of how do you charge a completely dead

If your batter is totally dead now, you might want to try that.

Re: [slim] Switching left and right channel

2008-10-21 Thread SuperQ

You could probably do it via a file transcoding.

You might be able to add something like this:

Code:

  flc flc * *
[mplayer] -really-quiet -vc null -vo null -cache 64 -af
volume=0,resample=44100:0:1,channels=2,extrastereo=-1 -ao
pcm:nowaveheader:file=/dev/fd/4 $FILE$ 4>&1 1>/dev/null | [flac] -cs
--totally-silent --endian=little --channels=2 --sign=signed --bps=16
--sample-rate=44100 --compression-level-0 -

The extrastereo=-1 option swaps the left/right (atleast that's what the
man page says)

[slim] iTunes playlist frustration

2008-10-21 Thread coma

I'm having a terrible time getting SqueezeCenter to properly load my
iTunes playlists. Here's whats happening.

I have several folders in iTunes to divide up my various playlists. I
also had far too many playlists in iTunes that were no longer being
used so I deleted them.

However, when I rescan I am still seeing these playlists show up in
SqueezeCenter. I even built an empty directory, copied over the latest
iTunes playlist file into that directory, pointed SqueezeCenter at it
and still am getting playlists showing up that should no longer exist.

Is there some cache file that I need to remove from SqueezeCenter or...
?
I'd be happy to be able to remove playlists from within SqueezeCenter
but I haven't found any way to remove them there either.

Thanks for any advice. Its driving me nuts.

[slim] Duet through existing 'Hi-Fi' - Big Volume Difference

2008-10-21 Thread socistep

Hi All,

As I save up for some better equipment I am currently playing my Duet
through my Sony Hi-Fi which I have had for 6/7 years, via analog cable.
I'm at work at present but will edit the post later with the actual
model.

The sound is pretty good however there is a big difference in volume on
both Squeezenetwork and my music files (I have checked that no replay
gain on etc.) I have to have the Hi-Fi turned to max to get a good base
volume level to then control via the controller, this gets turned from
30 to 15 for a similar volume on cd.

Does anyone else experience this for similar set-ups? Also if people
have 'better' equipment, how does the volume level for say FLACs via a
SB versus a CD.

Thanks
Ian

Not being a programmer, I have no idea what you mean. I just took the
demo file from the SqueezeJS Tutorial. Instead of using the
CompoundTitle attribute, I am just using "Album", "Contributors",
"Title". Works good. I just need to tweak the HTML to display the way
I want now.

Also, I can't seem to find a whole lot of documentation on SqueezeJS
other than what I found in the WIKI. Would be nice to get a list of
available options/attributes. One thing I would like to add to my
project is a method to monitor the Squeezebox state and somehow blank
the LCD when the Squeezebox isn't playing. Looked at the SqueezeJS
info on the WIKI and it hints at a way to monitor the Squeezebox state
but, again, I'm not a programmer so I don't know how to do that. A
little help, please.

That should be a marketing point. "Think of your multi-squeezebox
purchase as a wireless site survey...with AWESOME side effects."

Re: [slim] How good a wireless signal is good enough?

2008-10-21 Thread maggior

I have 4 squeezeboxes of various types spread throughout the house. I
find that mine will work down to 30% signal. As a rule of thumb, I try
to get the signal to be 50% or higher to give me some buffer since the
signal strength will fluxuate. My library is all mp3 (~190kbps), but I
have played FLACs with success.

Based on my experience, you shouldn't have any trouble with the signal
strengths you are seeing.

As a side note, one benefit to having SBs spread through the house
wirelessly (aside from having music everywhere!) is it is a great tool
to help adjust your wireless access point to ensure you are getting
good coverage throughout the house. I recently had to relocate
router/WAP to the basement. I had to switch my antennas out with high
gain ones. Then, by moving my it around and refreshing the summary
page on SqueezeCenter, I was able to find the optimum positioning for
it.

Re: [slim] Duet

2008-10-21 Thread maggior

My experience was that the battery didn't get warm when it charged up.
This surprised me. It must be a small current that is used to charge
it.

When you drop the controller into the cradle, do you hear a sound from
the controller? You should. Unless you've turned the sounds off. If
you hear that sound, that means you've got a good electrical connection
with the charger and the controller at least thinks it's charging the
battery. Make sure that there is nothing in the bottom of the cradle
and also ensure that the controller is sitting straight in it when you
put it in.

Other than the freezing, did you have the duet up and running?

I found it a little confusing setting my duet up when I first got it.
It's worth being persistent with it - it's a great product.

I considered getting those, but I'm glad I didn't, I got analog monitors
instead. I think these Edirols have line in too, you better use that.
I'll bet the SB3 has a much better DAC than these speakers. And you get
the advantage of being able to change the plugs around ;)

...your SBC froze? Does anything on the Controller work? Have you
tried a hard reset? Mine doesn't happen often now, but when it does, I
shut it off, take the battery out and then reverse. Seems to clear lots
of things up. The battery should charge regardless of the SBC
connection to SC or even network.

Again, I would try running it down and then recharging. I am curious
though, is the Controller frozen or just the battery display?

Howard

P.S. Customer support, just like any other, is hit or miss. Back in the
beginning I never got decent support so I turned to the forum. Others
will disagree, but The DUET is more difficult than the other SB's
to get running, but once you get it going, it's seems to be fairly
stable. That and you learn how to take care of the little things so
quickly and from second nature that you don't even realize they are
happening :-) Hang in there.

[slim] Switching left and right channel

2008-10-21 Thread BiT

Hello everybody!

I have had my awesome SB3 for about a month now, and I have been using
it with crappy computer speakers. Today my new Edirol MA-15DBK speaker
set came in, sounds good!

But my question is: Is it possible to switch the left and the right
audio channel?

I want to do this because my left speaker stands on the right, and my
right speakers stands on the left. There is no way I can turn that
around, because I need the controls on the right speaker.
I cannot just change the red and white RCA plug around because I'm
using the digital out on the SB, and need the RCA plugs on the speakers
for my iPod dock.

I can't find anything about it in the SC settings screens, and the FAQ
doesn't shows a good result either. Is there a way to do this? Plugin?
Future feature request?

Thanks in advance!

New member, BiT. :)

I'm probably getting one of those internet through your power lines

Re: [slim] scanning library issues Duet & vista

2008-10-21 Thread MOMENTUM

This is quite confusing..

1st off I only want wav. No precessing no compression. I am selling
off my collection and want / have pure files.

While dumping in via media player some showed all track info& art…some
didn’t (where does windows get this info). The ones that didn’t. I
right clicked on the album and choose find album/artist. This says
it’s a meta file and names the track and associates a picture. So all
1600 cds have art/tracks etc in both media center and in media center.

No that I got a new vista machine a good % of the track/artwork was
messed up. As I start trying to find the info(tracks) again the
original art starts poping up.

Is this stored in a folder in windows? If so where? I’d like to
preserve this file in my external hard drive.

Now that I have gone through all the info again is there a way to be
sure I don’t have to go through this again. Can TAG&RENAME see this
info and permanently store it in subfolders?

All music is filed ARTIST/ALBUM/TRACKS.

As I said before I want to keep it all wav. One option is to convert
all my filed to flac and use that library for media center / squeeze
center and keep my external hard drive for a backup. Is there an easy
process to do this to my entire collection while using the track/art
info that is currently present?

Thanx for your help

Yes, channels 1, 6, and 11 are spaced (in the US at least) such that
they don't "overlap" with any other channels. 1 and 2, for example,
while they are spearate, do share a little bit of spectrum. So you
could try a site survey, see what channels nearby routers are running
on, and try to set your wireless channel as far away as possible from
close-by strong signals.

This helped me in an apartment - my Wii's wireless connection was
worthless if I used channel 1, but channel 6 was perfect.

Re: [slim] continuous play or repeat question

2008-10-21 Thread lrossouw

To do what you want you need to browse to the album and then to the
track and then press play. This will play that song and then the next
song in the album etc.

For this to work you need to have the following settings:
- settings \ player \ basic settings \ play other songs in album
- shuffle off (with shuffle on it will play any song in the album after
the first)
- repeat: not selecting repeat song.

Re: [slim] Squeezebox Duet - Wake on LAN problems

2008-10-21 Thread DLORDE

Yup, I get this as well. The controller regularly gets 'stuck'
connecting to Squeezebox, connecting to the network, trying to select
tracks, and when I do select music with the controller, the first 30
secs or so of each track (even on a playlist) are interrupted by
(presumably) buffering silences. This doesn't happen using the
Squeezebox remote, Harmony remote, PC or Nokia N810, so I rarely use
the controller now :-(

The network signal is strong, and I have increased the buffering time
for tracks, but to no avail.

It sounds like the unit is loosing contact with the server and just

I wouldn't get too excited about this if you were imagining that there
was some kind of connection between theJazz and the "reborn" JazzFM.
This latter sounds just like the broadcast station JazzFM which we used
to have in London and SE England - precious little of the output could
even remotely be called "Jazz". All I have heard so far dipping in and
out of it for a day or so is stuff like Swingout Sister and Maria
Muldaur, hardly the Miles, Mingus, Bird, etc that one might want from a
Jazz station. I recall that theJazz during its short lived existence
offered decent doses of serious jazz rather than this dreary stuff
which JazzFM is playing.

2008-10-21 Thread Howard Passman

If you are new to SB or are currently looking at it and you see in
print that you can "listen to XM" on the SB. Forget about it. It's
what drew me to the SB in the first place and has been a constant
source of... well, let's just say you won't have it working long at any
one stretch.

SB does support Sirius so who knows what the future will bring, but I
think the solution for us users is more likely to be we'll be switched
to Sirrius rather than Logitech supporting XM. They've said it many
times in this forum, so I believe it to be true.

I would like to add that SB is an exciting way to listen to music even
if you can't get XM. Setting up your music files and playing them is
the highest quality way to listen to music on the SB, but services like
Pandora and Rhapsody are decent for listening and keep you from getting
bored with the same old music you have at home.

At first, trying to sort through the millions(seems like)of choices of
online music is as daunting as trying to pick the pickle with the most
bumps out of the pickle barrel (darn, did I show my age), but you
narrow it down eventually and get help from folks who have your tastes
and have already gone through many of the choices.

For now I plug my XM radio right in to my preamp or I can plug it in to
the back of the Boom. Works fine, but not as cool as having it on your
SBC.

Re: [slim] Jazz Radio audio streams

2008-10-21 Thread norderney

Try this URL for JazzFM:

http://stream.jazzfm.com:8000/

This is a 64k AAC+ stream and it sounds VERY GOOD through my
Transporter. IMO this AAC+ stream sounds BETTER than the Sky feed on
0202. I am not sure what bit rate they are using for Sky 0202.

Hope this URL works for you.

Is it a new SBC? If it is, run it down and charge it back up a few
times before worrying. Lithium ion batteries are a bit weird the first
few charges, but smooth out with time.

It will get warm. Not hot.

[slim] SB2 dying?

2008-10-21 Thread relen

I wonder if anyone can suggest a course of action for the following.

Last night my original SB2 started misbehaving and I wonder if this is
indicating the end of its useful life or if there are other
possibilities.

While playing (or not for that matter), the display suddenly goes off
for a period of seconds. During this time it continues playing, but if
I tell it to play something else (from the web interface) during this
period it ignores me. When it comes back it is very confused about
where it is in the track and may suddenly jump to the correct track. Or
not. When the display is visible, the unit follows instructions from the
web interface as normal.

The behaviour appears the same whether it's running wireless or wired
Ethernet.

The power supply seems to be running at a higher temperature than that
of the other units (SB3s) I have, but this may be normal. It is
possible there was a power irregularity recently (though my UPS claims
there wasn't) as I have had an external hard drive and an ethernet
switch go down in the past week, and in the former case at least,
partial failure of the power supply seems to be the cause.

The two SB3s I have in the house are behaving normally.

The server is v 7.1 running on a Mac Mini with OS X 10.5.5.

Any observations welcome.

Thanks!

I'm sure it's no coincidence that it's called the Logitech "Streaming
Media Business Unit" (not Audio), but that doesn't mean we'll see
anything soon...

And streamed media isn't just video and audio. Photos, RSS feeds,
weather data, all can be classed as media. I believe the Controller
does them all already :)

Photo's, RSS feeds and weather data are not 'streamed'...
Streaming requires a continuous feed of data and usually involves buffering.

The things you name are just simple periodic updates en one-time transfers.
Audio and video are streamed, so Fletch's got a point.

While I haven't done any critical listening tests between the two, I
have done some listening. Usually I don't have to get to focused to
hear the difference between two set ups unless they are very very close
in audio quality. I would say, at worst, the boom output is very, very
close to the SBR. I've been using A5's to listen to it and admittedly,
neither (A5 or A2)is the best judge of audio capabilites. To really
tell if there's a difference, you'd have to hook it up to a high
quality 2 channel system. But then if you have to do that, is there a
decernable difference for your listening set up. I'd say no.

Now that said, I'll throw this in. I'm on SC 7.3 and enjoying
listening to my SBC through headphones. I then tried it on a set of
A5's. Not so good, but o.k.. About the quality of an iPod even when
playing the largest .flac files. Then I played it through my 2 channel
set up. Whew, not so good. The SBC isn't good enough for a system that
reveals so much detail. I don't know if it's the internal DACs or the
processing, but I bet it's both.

Don't get me wrong, through a good set of headphones or even a set of
decent buds the SBC is easy listening.

Anyhoo, that's my experience and opinion. Neither worth warm... well
you know :-)

But the forum is hosted in the US by a US division of a European
