Re: [slim] Game On: Sonos has an iPhone app

2008-11-02 Thread rdb001

This thread is rather amusing to me. The iPhone applications are first
and foremost directed to iPhone users. If you are an iPhone owner like
me, there is nothing more satisfying than adding another killer
application to your iPhone. The Sonos native application is just that
-- a killer application for iPhone owners. It is fast, slick, and
really does nothing to my battery based on my casual use of it. It is
comparable to the Apple Remote application, but not as good in some
ways. The only significant downside that I have seen so far is that
you need to relaunch it after switching to anything else. It certainly
is much better than the $15 Zones application that I bought, and I liked
that as well.

Now, for Sonos and others like them, the iPhone application gives all
of the iPhone users a reason to either (1) buy Sonos or (2) increase
support for the same if they already own a Sonos system (like me). I
am eagerly awaiting the Slim Devices native iPhone application (or
iPeng native -- love the Penguin). I have a Transporter and a Duet,
and the iPeng plug-in and the Pronto 9600 remote with Barry's
Prontoscript application, but somehow my life is not complete without
the iPhone remote appplication. Sound crazy? It isn't for an iPhone
owner. Comparing the iPhone remote to the Duet remote or any other
remote isn't the issue. The only comparison that really matters in my
opinion is with another iPhone application.

I have several good examples. I have been waiting for a killer iPhone
stock trading application. So far the only one that I know about is
dedicated to the Ameritrade brokerage. I don't have an account with
them, but am now considering jumping from a broker that I love because
they don't have a comparable (or any) iPhone application. On the other
hand, I own a Vudu box and it can be controlled via a wifi remote.
While waiting for a native or other application to appear in the iTunes
store, I set up my Pronto 9600 to control the box. It looked great but
would not connect. When I got in touch with Vudu support, they
informed me that a few days before my inquiry they began to block the
wifi ports and would no longer support (open) the port for wifi
control. I am so angry that I will likely take it back. Imagine if
Logitech did that! Those guys deserve to go out of business. I am
going to laugh when Sonos begins to add video to their system and puts
Vudu out to pasture (someone will do it). Indeed, I am now exploring
Apple TV simply because of the great iPhone remote application for that
box.

Well, the point of this thread is that the iPhone is the must have
gadget and those that have it (soon to be nearly everyone) want
everything to work with it. That is the perspective. Does the iPhone
replace all of my remotes (the Pronto, Duet controller, Sonos
controller, etc)? It certainly could and would if cost were the issue,
but I still keep the others around. The buttons come in handy at times
for example.

Re: [slim] External Hard Drive Help?

JJZolx;355804 Wrote:
Depends on whether you want to use only the external drive to store all
your music, or you want to use it in addition to another folder to
 store your music.

If it's all to be on the external drive, then go to Settings Basic
Settings and change the Music Folder. Either type it in or browse to
the root folder where you have music stored on the external.

On the other hand, if you want to use more than one location for your
music then you'll need to use at least one Windows shortcut. If you
can find your current music folder, create a shortcut there which
points to the external drive. What I recommend, though, is to use an
empty Music Folder (create one somewhere) and then place shortcuts in
that otherwise empty folder that point to each of the music locations.
This way it's a little easier to manage and you don't lose a shortcut in
some huge folder full of files and other folders. You want to avoid
circular references when using these shortcuts, so losing a shortcut in
your Music Folder can be a pain and cause unexplained scanning issues.

Thats the way I do it. I just create a folder on my computer called
slimmusic and put shortcuts to the lossy and lossless folders on my
firewire drive. I also have another external firewire drive that backs
up my main external library. Works great even through a crash last
week.

For security reasons, we prefer to go without home wifi.

That's the way a bridge works. The SBR allows the controller direct
bridged access to your local network. Maybe I'll go visit my friend
who has the receiver and do a security audit. I'm guessing it's less
secure than a normal WPA2 access point.

A security audit? ;) ;)

If I wanted my house to be like a digital Fort Knox, I'd setup a
separate wifi network that only allows traffic to end from
SqueezeCenter. That shouldn't be too hard. That way the worst the enemy
can do - even if they manage to crack WPA2 - is snoop on your music or
wake you up in the middle of the night with the latest Rage Against the
Machine. Personally, I'd add the option to connect laptops through
openvpn or something similar.

WPA2 with a decent size key is uncracked.

Re: [slim] Announcement Squeezecenter 7.2.1

2008-11-02 Thread BoxFreak

After updating to 7.2.1 I´ve became a basket case. Just problems after
problems, 7.2 worked allright. I only wanted to listen music...

7.2.1 worked allright couple of days, after that the web-interface
wouldn´t start at all, an also my SB3 couldn´t connect to server. Only
re-installation fixed this. After suffering from that couple of times I
decided to update to 7.3 beta, which works better. Only yesterday I had
to re-install that too... And simply because I tried to test another
skin for the webinterface. After changing that to Default(2), the
webinterface didn´t start, and it was impossible to change it back. I
even tried to change the interface by editing the configuration-file,
but that didn´t help.

I would suggest to test this piece of software a LITTLE more before
asking to update for newer version. I know many cases where people have
sold their SB after this kind of problems because they just don´t mind
fighting.

There´s also a one minor bug that annoys me; now playing info on my SB3
gets reset to small VU occasionally. When it´s going to be fixed?

Had a similar problem. Controller did not want to update, always replied
with the failed installation error. I installed the new 7.2.1 from the
nightlies yesterday. Automatic updates are enabled, still there has
been no jive firmware in the firmware directory even after rebooting
server (running Win XP) and the controller.

Now I downloaded jive.version and jive_7.2_r3191.bin from the link
above, put them into the firmware directory and while I am writing
this, the controller does it's update.

The CD's stay on the shelves.

I would aspect that clicking on play with a track is selected that

A long shot here, whats the players name on Squeezenetwork ? if you use
that ?

I had trouble with SN changing the spelling of my players name due to
problems with non English language, this misspellings was transmitted
to my server and thus to my local name of the player.
This is not exactly your problem.

But SqueezeNetwork has a mechanism (i don't now how ) that can change
the players name on your server.

I use and prefer the Uline CD mailing boxes.

http://www.uline.com/BL_1451/CD-Jewel-Case-Mailers-Corrugated

They're sturdy enough to ship 25 or 50 CDs in, so plenty sturdy to
store. And they're just corrugated cardboard, so I can write on them
and label the contents (I give all ripped CDs a number in the comments
field). I prefer the 25-CD boxes, and they're easily handled and are
small enough to be very flexible on how you store them. Only downside
is you have to buy them in bulk, but considering the size of most
people's collection on this forum, that's likely not a problem, as
you'll probably be using them!

2008-11-02 Thread danco

I tend to avoid Terminal for these things. There are some areas where it
is the best way to do things, but I usually find the GUI more
convenient. It is good to learn to use it, but it can be a bit scary,
especially for new users.

I am doubtful about putting lame inside the SqueezeCenter preference
pane. Mainly because it would get deleted when SqueezeCenter is
updated. I reckon one should not mess with the preference pane unless
essential.

/usr/bin, should work fine, and is also a place where other programs
can find it if necessary.

/usr/local/bin may well not exist. I think my original installation of
lame created it for me, and a few other programs use it. Its main
advantage over /usr/bin is to separate out one's own installed Unix
programs from those installed by Apple.

Hmm I've got my first biod today, some change in 3220 must be for the

freeze so far and one biod both required reboot to get out of.

But i got the biod after i initiated a wol from the sbc in the new
albums menu (selecting an album) after the server was up (I see display
on SB3 ).
The SBC was unable to find my server, without rebooting.

I never get problems after an normal sleep of the SBC.

So to reproduce you have to initiate wol, then fiddle with SBC while
the server is booting, then it will be in a messed up state not able to
connect to the server when it's up (try searching for music sources
while your server is not there yet ) I only got this once i trie the
reproduce this.

What loggs should i turn on ?

I got an Linksys WRT54GL with tomato firmware , the server is an

Yes even my SBR has fixed ip thanks to robins net-udap tool.

Partly out of idle curiosity, and partly due to some enforced idleness
caused by a bout of 'flu, I decided to track down the cause of the
problem. It appears that the switch mode regulator (NJU7630) that
generates the supply for the CPU has failed, as the output is now stuck
at the supply voltage (5V) regardless of the input. The end result is
that Q3 was passing about 2.7V to the CPU board, hence the hot CPU and
the very hot Q3 due to the excess current it was passing.

This is probably not directly repairable, as the regulator part is not
available retail and even if it was, it hard to say what other damage
may have been caused.

[slim] Infra Red Codes for Transporter Remote?

I guess that you guys did not invent a totally new infra red code set,
but probably instead reused a scheme that has already been used by
another manufacturer? = If so, can you please give the name of that
manufacturer, and the respective device type?

Re: [slim] Why do I need the SqueezeCenter server to play my MP3 files?

2008-11-02 Thread Michael Herger
I wonder if this wouldn't basically give SqueezeNetwork access to your
local NAS drives... That could be a bit of a privacy issue for some people.

We should make this optional. A flag set in SB whether it should or not forward
UPnP communication.

[slim] Missing Albums after scan

2008-11-02 Thread NoFlyZone

I'm frustrated. I'm not a newbie to this service and it's worked
flawlessly for many years (I think). Maybe it's the latest update or me
playing with my tagging but...

In my The Beatles folder I have 9 Beatles's FLAC encoded albums all
in their own little folder. Squeezecenter likes only 3 Beatles albums.
It ignores the rest. I've cleared the library multiple times and still
only likes the 3. I've directed the scan specifically for those albums
and still, they won't show up on my library. I've even cleared the
library and rescanned my backup music drive, a clone, and still no go.
I've looked at the files, there properties, content, permissions (which
I changed to full access), I've played the music on those albums through
Media Monkey, and I've given it a night's rest and a fresh brain. I
would not be surprised if many other albums are missing, unless
Sqeezecenter didn't like the boys much.

So what I'm I missing, besides of course BEATLES ALBUMS?

[slim] Suddenly can't find player or network !!

2008-11-02 Thread swayzak

hi

Turned my system on today and had some problems.

Firstly the Remote (I have Duet system) couldn't see the player - it
wasn't listed.

However Squeezecentre could.

The Remote was connected to my home network OK - just couldn't find the
player (nor logon to SqueezeNetwork).

So I turned everything off rebooted PC.

Now it sees the player, but can't login to my House network
(therefore can't connect with SC properly !!).

One thing that may have triggered this was me turning the electricity
off whilst doing an electrical repair - the Player remote were on at
this point (but not the PC).

I'm on SC 7.2.1.

Can anyone advise ?

thanks

Re: [slim] General setup inquiery

2008-11-02 Thread criticalmess

Hello,

I totally overlooked the option of hooking it all together over cable -
silly, really ... I was so caught up in the potential uses, and where I
would get the best connection and so on, I did not think of it ...
just goes to show that some people are very selective to remember
certain things, I guess :)

that already answers the first question - thank you very much!

I will be looking into the poweron issue a bit more, as I use relais
right now - but indeed, since the receivers are sending some juice to
the amps for amplification, we might be able to read it out, and use
the relais in that case

The amps that I'm using now are pretty simple - off-the-shelf gear
around 250 euros / dollars, nothing special at all
There are some connections in the rear that I have not checked yet
though - but we'll get there.

Thanks all, again, for the remark - I promise to be a bit less daft
from now on ;)

greetings,
Frank

Skipping over why for a minute, you should DL Mp3tag if you don't

scanning click on the column Album, and the ones with no album tag will
show up at the top.

If it keeps happening I would look at other music apps you use, e.g.

mp3tag works on FLAC files?

Be sure to set mp3tag to look at each type of tag separately, too.
Sometimes it is a case of the information being stored in one tag
format, but SC gives priority to another tag format. I only use Mp3,
but this has caught me before where SC was giving priority to APE tags,
but the information I wanted it to pick up was in the ID3 tags.

Yeah, very well, despite the unfortunate name.

Good point about the ID3 tags, and as it happens you don't need to
change any settings in Mp3Tag if you're using FLAC files. It will
automatically read all tags, so just look at the Tags column and scroll
through to any that list ID3 rather than just FLAC (FLAC). Select the
files infected with ID3 tags, hit ctrl+x to remove all tags, and ctrl+v
to paste them back in. Mp3 tag will not write ID3 tags to a FLAC file
(unlike some other named music apps), so after they're pasted back in
the Tag column will list FLAC (FLAC) as the tag type, which is their
way of saying Vorbis tags.

Exactly right. The reason for the check box is so that, if you have

Sorry I wasn't clear, I meant navigate to the new folder via the Browse

it should automatically add the files to your database.

One other thing to look out for - check the files aren't in your
database already but under No Album. Shouldn't be an issue if a clear
and rescan brings the missing files into the database, but may be worth
checking.

I would like to correct this .. any suggestions .. bug maybe .. Thank

If you really want to correct it you could file a feature request to
have the Controller UI info added to Remote Control Reference.

If you just want to read about the Controller you can look here:

[slim] Switching Squeezecenter to new server?

2008-11-02 Thread djaws

I'm attempting to move my Squeezecenter to a new server (XP, raid disks,
more CPU, etc.). I simply copied all of my music and installed a clean
version of 7.2.1. Shutdown my old server, and fired up the new one and
waited until it scanned all of the music. Now I've attempted to use the
pull down on the top right corner of squeezecenter to choose player.
I choose my current player and get a pop-up screen, do you want to
switch this player to the current squeezecenter?. I select the yes
button.

At this point, the Squeezebox (v3) player powers up, finds the network,
then says, starting squeezecenter and powers back down. If I power
back up, same cycle.

I've switched the player back to my old server/squeezecenter and it
runs fine.

Do I need to start all over from scratch? Reset the squeezebox to
default and try reconnecting? I'm at a loss. Thanks for the help!

One possibility could be a firewall in the new setting, or soem other
issue that prevents the new server from connecting 100% to your home
network.

If that is not the case, it never hurts to start from scratch, it is an
exercise I find myself going once or twice a year with the SB in my
house (more often with the Duet, but hopefully that is settling down).
It is a hassle to go for the entire configuration of the different SB
with your preferences. I wish there was a clean way to save the setup
data for all SB in the household, so that after a clean restart you
have your old data again.

[slim] 7.2.1 Player Synchronization...

2008-11-02 Thread pablolie

...I have noticed inconsistencies in player synchornization behavior
based on whether you set up synchronization with the remote on the
players, or from the setup functionality in Squeezecenter. With the
latter, it works reliably and can be set up.

But I can't set up synchronization with more than *one* other player
from the remote on the player itself.

Has anyone else noticed that? I have four players in the house right
now, and only two of them can be synched at the time with the SB3
remote or Boom remote (not sure if I tried from Duet). as soon as you
try to add another one it forgets about the last player you wanted to
synch with.

From the low-right settings tab in Squeezecenter I can set up the
desired functionality under players-synchronize, and it works. It is
just a tad inconvenient to have to rush to the computer to set up
synchronizations among the 4 players.

[slim] Softsqueeze!

2008-11-02 Thread pablolie

Am I the only one that thinks that Softsqueeze has huge potential as a
major competitive differentiator between our SqueezeCenter line of
product and other solutions? I would really like to use Softsqueeze as
the one and only audio application on my PC and thereby use it as the
only audio solution in my work study - the speakers and audio are truly
very good and deserve to work in harmony with the rest of the
Squeezeboxes and Booms in the house.

As of now it still looks like Softsqueeze is a little bit of a garage
development - my hat's off to those putting it together, but I wish
there was a bit more emphasis on truly productizing it. Right now it
is still hampered with stability issues, especially when one
synchronizes with other SB in the house. It seems to introduce lags and
instabilities in SC - and when one closes the application it will still
show up as a player in SC 7.2.1 and seemingly lead to lags and software
confusion in a few things.

I am running it on a rock solid Vista Ultimate 64 bit machine with an
Intel E8600 and 8GB of memory, so computing resources are not an issue.
Perhaps compatibility with Vista 64 is?

I'd like to hear if others share my opinion that Softsqueeze deserves
more attention from Logitech.

SqueezePlay 7.3 (beta) is available at

MAC with every nightly build. Linux users still need to build their

Also, here's what I see in the log when the player connects and is

I don't know why you can't get to the firmware menu, but if you have
very old firmware it may not help anyway. I'm pretty sure the option

to buy or borrow an SB remote.

 Regards,
 Peter

You can do some cool things with linux and the madwifi driver.
Multiple vlans tied to multiple virtual APs. Then you can go nuts with
traffic control queues and iptables. If you're still bored with that
you can add monitoring with a netflow logger and some of the crazy IDS
tools. Netflows are one of my favorite tools.

Personally I don't have that much spare time between work and listening
to my squeezeboxs. :-)

Re: [slim] Robocopy help, please

2008-11-02 Thread Citylights

Try the /FFT switch to ignore timestamp differences of up to 2 seconds.

This will help if you are copying from NTFS to non-NTFS partitions.
Perhaps your F: drive?
RoboCopy will look for a timestamp accurate to 100 nanoseconds if it
thinks it is copying to NTFS. Most other file systems do not use such
an accurate timestamp.

This solved my problem of backing up from XP to my Linkstation NAS
(formatted with the xfs file system).

Re: [slim] What Squeezebox to get for bedroom

I've looked around through all the settings pages and I can't find any
option to let me browse by AlbumArtist so I'm still browsing by my much
longer list of Artists at the moment, so it takes much longer to find
what I'm looking for. Does anyone have a decent workaround to what must
 be a common scenario?

You can create a menu with Custom Browse that only contains the artists
which SqueezeCenter considers to be album artists. Just create a new
menu in the Custom Browse settings page of the type Artists or
Filtered Artists and make sure you have only checked Album Artists
in the Roles to include parameter.

I suspect this isn't going to show all your albums, so if it doesn't
you probably want to mark both Artists and Album Artists in the
Roles to include parameter, just make sure not to mark Track
Artists.

Previously I have tried putting plugins into the plugin folder within
the public folder on the slimserver but I am denied access. Any ideas
 with this also?

Third party plugins should be installed in the Plugins directory, not
in Slim/Plugin. This directory might require administrative access to
write to, so make sure you are logged in as a user with administrative
access when you copy files to it.

You will find my plugins together with all third party plugins:
http://wiki.slimdevices.com/index.php/SqueezeCenter_Plugins

Or directly from my download page:

what the official date for the mythical SqueezePlay is? :-D

SqueezePlay 7.3 (beta) is available at
 http://downloads.slimdevices.com/nightly/latest/7.3/ for Windows and
MAC with every nightly build. Linux users still need to build their
own. My guess is that the official 7.3 release is a little less than a
 month away.

Ah, a binary. I just installed it I'm not very impressed. Imitation of
hardware devices doesn't seem to be the way to a good desktop
experience. A PC is not a controller.
