[slim] Boom + Duet = Slacker problem?

2008-12-30 Thread tdnuerf

My Boom has been so impressive for the past month that I bought a Duet,
which arrived today. Set it up without problem, connected to SN, fired
up a Slacker favorite station, and enjoyed music. A song came on that I
wanted to skip, so I hit on the SBC. The song kept playing.
Hmmm. Hit , selected "Ban Song", and a popup appeared saying
"This song will no longer play," but the song kept playing. Hmmm.
Went to the Slacker web player and found that the song had been added
to the Ban list.

I shut down the SBR and SBC, fired up my Boom, played a Slacker
station, tried to skip by hitting as usual. The song kept
playing. Hit the wheel, selected "Ban Song", and was informed that the
song will no longer play -- but the song kept playing. Fiddling around,
I hit and got the response that I used to get by hitting
-- the current song stopped, a new one started, and my remaining skip
count was decremented by one.

I fired up the Duet again and tried the trick on the SBC -- no
dice; the song kept playing.

I tested Pandora's skip behavior -- everything works exactly as
expected where the button on the applicable device (SBC or Boom)
skips the current song.

So now as far as Slacker goes, my Boom doesn't work like it used to,
and I have no way to skip or ban a song via the SBC. What am I
missing?

Boom firmware 41, SBC @ 7.3 r3476, SBR @ 56. No SC installed -- I'm a
Squeezenetwork-only user.

Thanks in advance for any and all help!

[slim] Remembering multiple music sources

2008-12-30 Thread downtime

I am connected to my office network at home via a wireless router.
SqueezeCenter 7.3 is running on two servers, one on the office network
(I'll call remote) and one behind the router at home (local). I have a
Squeezebox 3 behind the router as well.

The Squeezebox can connect to both SqueezeCenters but neither shows in
the other's Music Source list.

If I am connected to the remote SqueezeCenter and go back into
Squeezebox Setup I can connect to either source by browsing. However,
once I connect to the local SC, the remote one no longer appears as a
music source and I have to enter the IP manually to reconnect.

Is there a way to save music sources or enter them as favorites?

Thanks.

P.S. Before posting, I searched for a similar thread to this one.

[slim] where are playlists saved

2008-12-30 Thread wilgartw

tonight i spent some time creating a playlist on my duet controller, and
saved it called "nye party"

i upgraded to 7.3.1 to get "party mode"

my playlist has disappeared, i've checked the location on my linux box,
and an older playlist is there "radiohead.m3u".

I created a new playlist and saved it as "". I can see this on my
controller, and through the squeezecenter webpage, but it is not in my
playlists folder.

if i do a "find / -name **" it finds nothing.
if i do a "find / -name *3u" it finds my old radiohead playlist and
nothing else.

i am running ubuntu

where are the playlists saved?

I'm guessing you guys have more troubles than I do because my troubles
are too minor to bother posting a thread about: having to hit play a
few times sometimes before it will start, plus the occasional stream

I wonder what causes some people to have more trouble than others? I
have very SOLID internet (high QoS) so maybe that's why I have few

Other than these minor issues, I honestly think Rhapsody/Squeezebox is
the holy grail of music, so I sure hope things work out for them.

Re: [slim] iPeng Application 1.0 now on the App Store

2008-12-30 Thread jazztime

Hi Pippin,
I'm experimenting with my tags (in a little sample-database) trying to
find a simple way to be able to search (and perhaps browse) artist
(main artist/lead performer) and musicians (band members) separately.
Right now I have tagged the main artist in "ARTIST" and musicians in
"BAND" (FLAC files).

Browsing artists in SC and Transporter ONLY list main artists (ARTIST)
- and albums issued by the main artist. And when searching in SC I can
find those albums where a certain musician (BAND) is performing (i can
not browse musician though).

Browsing artists in iPeng shows a different result though. The artist
browse in iPeng list main artists (ARTIST) AND musicians (BAND). This
way I can not easily see the role (main artist or musician).

Well, I know this thread is not for discussing tagging (and this way of
tagging might not be correct, or the best way to achieve what I want),
but is it intended/correct that browsing artists in iPeng is not the
same as browsing artists in SC/Trandporter?

PS: Band/Orchestra is NOT set to be included ind the artist list in SC.
Also I realize that what I try to achieve migt be more easy when iPeng
will suppport Custom Browse

Re: [slim] iPeng Application 1.0 now on the App Store

2008-12-30 Thread markstrom

So I used the app every day for a full month, I think it's time I step
in with some feature requests (no particular order).

1. I really lack a way to display the album cover larger before
actually playing the album. Is click and hold the cover art taken?

2. Artist biography look-up from Allmusic Guide. Maybe even available
from the Now Playing screen

3. Option to Sort album on year in artist view

4. I find it hard to tell if the power icon is on or off (the same goes
for repeat and shuffle but I never use them)

5. I would like to "find more by this artist", i.e. the artist playing
now. The result should look just like an ordinary search.

6. In album and new music view I would like the option to switch artist
name and album title, i.e. have the artist name large/bold and the album
title smaller.

7. Option to trim the end of an album title rather than the middle.

I was trilled to read that there is a plan for CustomBrowse
implementation in the future and some of the thing can be taken care of
that way.

I bought a Popcorn Hour A110 which I just point to my NAS - after a few
months, it's played pretty much everything that I've thrown at it ISO,
MKV, AVI and etc. I'm really impressed with it, though I only use a
fraction of its functionality. Don't expect fancy menus, unless you use
one of the jukebox skins (http://www.networkedmediatank.com/). The key
selling point for me was that it wasn't another PC cluttering up a room
and consuming unnecessary power. You can put a hard drive in it if you
want, I haven't bothered. I would recommend you keep track of your
ripped media with a sensible naming scheme that reflects resolution and
fps, though. And don't use it for music playback, but why would you,
with a Squeezebox :-)

Now wait a moment, that's a different issue and it only applies to the
iPeng plugin before version 0.5.

However, it's actually ONE of the reasons for the problems in 1.0.4.

asymtot, you say it can't be the iPod because the iPod's iPod
application (this naming convention is confusing...) doesn't show this
problem.
Well... that's not completely true. iPhone OS does have a standard
control called UISlider that displays a nice slider which iPeng uses.
It behaves completely different from the one iPod uses. I'm pretty sure
Apple's iPod application uses something else.
One of the diferences in behavior is, that UISlider will immediately
move to any position on the slider bar where you touch it. Just like
iPeng pre-0.5. In the beta test it came out that this is not acceptable
and actually most iPhone apps don't behave like this.
So iPeng captures only an area around the "knob" and you have to drag
that one. It's not just the knob itself, it's a much bigger area but it
captures there.
Step in issue #2: The sensitivity of the iPhone screen close to the
borders is limited, you can see this with other apps and other controls
as well. This seems to be a software issue, actually, the problem seems
to be that the screen is actually MORE sensitive close to the edges and
the software compensates for that. This means, some touches close to the
border are sometimes simply ignored, if iPhone decides they are
accidental.
Now step in iPeng: Due to it's layout, on iPeng the volume slider is
actually CLOSER to the edge of the screen than with most other apps.

The result is what you see. In my experience it helps to make sure you
don't touch the screen with the fingers of the hand that holds the
device (even outside the visible area) and especially not to rest a
finger at the bottom of the device.

I'm looking for solutions, but since "increase capture area" and "move
up detection chain to improve sensitivity" are pretty much through, my
current favorite is to swap the volume slider with the
"Power/Skip/Play" buttons, those are bigger and a missed hit may not
hurt as much.

Opinions?

I bent the intend of the original thread, since I was originally
interested in getting ogg/Vorbis running (which was easily done by the
first answer) and then, I wanted to extend that to ogg/flac. The reason
is that with an in-home streaming solution I have plenty of bandwidth
for ogg/flac using SB3 boxes as the end-points but it is not strictly
necessary as ogg/Vorbis Q=10 has very few audible artifacts.

My SB3 is the most expensive part of my stereo. So I'm not going to brag
about it.
And my SBB as well...Is it wrong that my alarm clock is worth more than
most of my stereo components? I need to work on that.

Re: [slim] Squeezebox not working on ethernet, works on wireless

2008-12-30 Thread Andyb01

I had a problem like this - could not detect DHCP with a homeplug and
wouldn't work on a fixed IP either using a DG834 router. In the end
fixed by adding an ethernet switch (Netgear FS605) between the SB and
the homeplug and then worked like a charm ever since.

Might help

Let's not forget that on the foundation (legacy) laid down by these "old

on. As said above, having Cisco join the party is a good thing. Smart

Cisco boxes (routers... etc) that properly prioritize and distribute

2008-12-30 Thread lapusey

My wife and I have, for years, played nature sounds on our alarm clock
to go to sleep. I am hoping to do the same with the Boom. My problem is
that I am bandwidth limited (i.e. if I exceed 200MB/day I get throttled
back to intollerable speeds - no options on this point).

Rather than 'waste' my daily ration on nature sounds, is there a way to
play loop audio on my local machine, through squeezecenter?

I ran into the same issue using the iPeng plug-in, before I found out

As the great philosopher Yogi Berra said, It aint' over 'til its over.

There are folks arguing, with good cause, that 11n should more strongly
deprecate the 2.4gHz band, keep it only for legacy interaction. This
would be a good thing, IMHO, but its contentious.

The important point today is that since its not final, there are not
tons of small, power efficient, inexpensive chips to handle it. Its not
mass market ready -- today its for early adopters.

The only fact here is that SlimDevices/Logitech never comments on future
products.

My prediction, and I'm a user/customer, not an insider, is that there
will be nothing about 11n until Mouser and DigiKey have lots of
commercially ready products, in stock.

All the discussion on the forums of the world isn't going to change that.

Everything I've read says this too. But the spec is being written by
those who stand to profit more if the final spec is NOT firmware
upgradable from existing products (because they can sell us another
one!). Consumer electronics has a long, ugly history of completely
unneccessary incompatibilities being foisted on consumers to shore up

Re: [slim] 802.11n Devices

2008-12-30 Thread bgriffis

Thanks for all your replies. There were some other good reasons given
for why 802.11n (or "Draft N" currently) should be added to devices.

Summary of Benefits
* 5 GHz operation avoids interference from microwaves, phones, etc.
* Gives ability for people to use "Greenfield" mode for increased
throughput (i.e. all N network)
* Increased range from MIMO technology
* Better throughput for people using their SB as a wireless bridge

Recommendation
* In order to keep costs down while still offering these benefits to
those who want/need it, the best scenario would be if Logitech offered
a replacement mini-PCI Wifi to support 802.11n. I'm sure they could
sell this device at a nice profit and everyone would be happy.

Side note
* Some people seem to be against using this technology because "it's
not a finished spec." Everything I've read indicates that current
hardware will be firmware upgradeable to be compliant with the final
802.11n spec. Note that although the spec is not yet ratified, there
are still quality controls in place. The Wifi Alliance does
interoperability testing and has a "Draft N" certification process.
The "Draft N" equipment has been available for quite some time and
seems to have matured quite a bit. I too was wary of this
certification early on, but now that I see how long the 802.11n spec is
dragging on I think it was a smart move by the Wifi Alliance in creating
this intermediate certification. I'm sure lots of great inputs have
made their way into the final spec as a result of all the real-world
usage that has resulted. Also, people who need the range/throughput of
802.11n have gotten access to it years sooner.

As a consumer who spends a good portion of his time working with my home
audio/video streaming, I say the more the merrier.

The greater the variety the better the chance we'll overcome DRM
restrictions and iTunes style lock-in. That's why I was heartened by
iLuv offering an Internet streaming radio for ~140$ recently.

Streaming digital entertainment is still in enough of an infancy that
everyone joining really helps.

Regardless of how lame Cisco's entry will likely be. :P

Thanks, but I changed them all to proxied a few weeks ago, and it

Trust me - I'm not dismissing it. I have my share of issues with
Rhapsody on my Squeezeboxes. I'm just saying that Slim/Logitech sell
(tens of) thousands of Squeezeboxes in the States alone - yet there's
only a handful of Rhapsody subscribers reporting issues here on the

Oh please - just stop. Just because you have an issue doesn't mean
everyone else will. I've been using Rhapsody on my Squeezeboxes since
day 1 of the official support. Yeah it's hit & miss sometimes but
totally worth the investment.

The fact of the matter is there are tens of thousands of satisfied
customers compared to the dozen or so that have issues here in these
threads. Do you honestly think that the <100 people that continually
post here in the forums are the only owners of Squeezeboxes?

Logitech & Slim would have thrown in the towel on the Squeezebox line

To potential subscribers: give it a shot. You get 30 days free anyway.
I've had my share of issues but the benefits far outway the occasional

Re: [slim] iPeng Application 1.0 now on the App Store

2008-12-30 Thread asymtot

I have noticed that the volume slider on my iPod touch is not very
responsive with iPeng. It sometimes takes 3 or 4 tries before the
slider "latches" onto my finger. Once it latches, it works fine. I
can slide the volume very smoothly back and forth. But once I let go,
it will take several attempts to get it to recognize my finger again.

I think this is related to iPeng not the ipod since it work perfectly
when I use the ipod's native music player application.

Has anyone else experienced this?

thanks

I most certainly will and if Sirius/XM keep putting DJ's on my favorite
stations, I know how I'll pay for it. :-)

I respectfully disagree on this point. I had Rhapsody for 4 months and
it rarely worked properly. You must admit if your mail, newspaper,
cable tv, internet (oh wait, that's not a good example), car,
refrigerator if they performed like Rhapsody, you'd want a refund
or credit. It's not just a matter of pressing play ocassionally. I'd
love to see it work because I liked it. If they get it working I will
sign back up. I'd also be more patient if they would fess up and quit
telling us and the folks at Logitech that they were pushing out a fix
"tomorrow".

Re: [slim] SqueezePlay download

2008-12-30 Thread HydeTheDarkerSide

Cheers for the info. The OS is Vista Ultimate on the laptop and WHS (or
Windows Server 2003) on my well WHS ;-)

Neither reported an update was available for SoftSqueeze and I don't
even have SoftSqueeze installed on the WHS :-?

I'll try your suggestions and post back :-)

It might be worth looking about for some other threads as well, there
might even be one discussing VLC specifically. perhaps :)

Re: [slim] Softsqueeze Sync Issues

2008-12-30 Thread dundon00

I meant to say also:

- I used to have the older version of SoftSqueeze, but I upgraded to
the latest (SoftSqueeze 3.7), and it made no difference.
- songs tend to get further out of sync after each song in the
playlist.

Anyone have any ideas? Currently a frustrating experience :).
