I don't know if I get the point, but don't the resulting lossless files
play in standard mp3 players that only support mp3? That's kind of an
advantage, although, having a file take up this much space on your mp3
player without sounding lossless seems a bit weird.

Marketingwise the name mp3 is still a lot more powerful than (what's
that?) flac.

Peter (prefers flac, obviously)

Re: [slim] mp3HD

2009-03-24 Thread sveinan

I'll keep my library of FLAC files. But I can see a few positive angles.
To me this is a mix between marketing and the technical facts.

Ok. We have a new 'HD' format. Which in itself is kinda funny, CDs
introduced in 1982 contains about the same ammount and quality of
information that this 'HD' format can do. Talk about progress ;)

But it's all about marketing ('HD' branding hype), earning money
(licensing), and so on. To me the value will be that this may
contribute to making more online sources of lossless content available.
Sure, they will probably price the 'HD' edition of music tracks higher
(hype + money). And I will need to convert the mp3HD to FLAC. But in
this day and age, I'm so tired of having to buy physical CDs (sometimes
whole album). Just to get a lossless edition of a single music track
that interests me.

So if mp3HD in some ways contribute to lossless music beeing more
avilable online. Bring it on :)

Hello,
A friend of mine runs a business which is about hifi and home cinema.
He has a customer who has:
a 40 inch Sony tft display where he uses to watch movies.
A decent hifi system where he now listens to cds.
He will drop his cds all together and
He will buy a ripping station with SC7 on it and a transporter if:
He can sit back in his easy chair and
- browse album art (preferably in iphonish cover flow fashion on his
fancy tft screen in full size, select the album he wants and make the
transporter play it.
The ripping part of it is well solved. The device rips cds
automatically and even gets the so wanted album art in most cases.
We could add a computer running SC7 to the setup.
The thing I can not solve is:
How is the computer i.e the sc7 interface navigated in a way so that
the said customer does not need to care if he has a computer in his
hifi rack?
I am looking for something wireless. Perhaps something that even works
without opening a web browser?
Have looked at moose.
Any ideas?

Re: [slim] MusicIP: Can't get it to work on my new PC with SC

2009-03-24 Thread ModelCitizen

Cheers chaps.

I've started off following Michaels advice and completely uninstalled
MusicIP, then reinstalled it. Once it had scanned my music folder I
started the (API) server, left the software open and got SC to rescan
my music. The little MusicIP Mix icons then appeared! Cheers.

Michael, I originally set up MusicIP in headless mode according to
instructions provided on the Spicefly web site.
http://spicefly.com/index.php?option=com_contenttask=categorysectionid=5id=16Itemid=32
This set up has been recommended by other MusicIP/SlimCenter users.

As I really do not understand how MusicIP works and the relationship
between it and SlimCenter I thought it best to follow them entirely and
not deviate.

Moonbase, thanks! This evening I will need to set up MusicIP as a
servive so that it starts automatically with my PC and before
SlimCenter (using registry depend on service fix). I am confused
aboiut installing the web gui and changing the port to 10003 (so that
it does not interfere with the software gui)... I only used the web gui
to refresh the cache.

Anyway, I certainly do not want to leave the software application open
all the time and I'd like SlimCenter to be updated with new MusicIP
info automatically. I'll read your helpful post more fully this
evening.

Re: [slim] mp3HD

2009-03-24 Thread Bytec

To me MP3HD looks like pure marketing (just trying to sell more
licenses). :(

1) MP3HD is NOT HD! It is just 16bit/44.1KHz stereo.
2) They refer to MP3HD as a convenient format, but it has lost the #1
convenience of a MP3 file - file size! MP3HD is BIG. WavPack solution
with 2 files (lossy+correction) is more convenient, because one can
take only lossy part if it's necessary.
3) MP3HD is ONLY HALF compatible with old players. Only lossy MP3 part
can be played, but storage space is taken.
4) MP3HD does not solve any problems concerning lossless audio storage.
FLAC does much better job and provides more freedom.

And the list goes on ... So I think MP3HD will die soon, because it
does not solve anything...

Haven't any clue about the real world user experience with the

The tp costs about 2k bugs and the ripnas will go for an other 1k. So
money isn't an object as long as he's got the album art and a really
blowing user experience.
btw. How do you guys get album art? There is a feature in SC7.3?
Ripnas is claimed to do that as well but I read that it doesn't always
get the covers right.

It's 3.5, I believe, about twice the size of the controller's. You
want to use the iPod touch instead of the phone as a controller, of
course.

Size: Well, depends. Of course a 20 LCD is something else, but then
your are sitting further away from that one. Plus with a portable
device you don't have to sit in front of the screen.

Both the Controller and iPeng don't currently have something like
CoverFlow, yet, only fullscreen artwork on NowPlaying and small covers
on the albums lists.

2009-03-24 Thread Michael Herger
As I really do not understand how MusicIP works and the relationship
between it and SlimCenter I thought it best to follow them entirely and

MIP has a built in web server listening on port 10002. This web server
allows for some queries and commands. SC is sending HTTP requests to that
port to get a list of tracks known by MIP, start mixes etc.

I think you can follow Spicefly's instructions about setting up the
service (second part). Just ignore the first part about the GUI and
changing ports etc. If the service is already running in the background,
then you won't start it again from the GUI.

Personally I use MediaMonkey after ripping, others use tools that

I second that. And you can use the GUI anytime, even while running
headless, just switch off the GUI’s API Server by unchecking the little
checkbox under File - Preferences - Services - [_] API. (And TiVo and
UPnP as well, if you don’t need them.)

OK, I'll have a go at this. Why pay big bucks for RipNAS? Don’t get me
wrong, it’s a great product in a small package but can get expensive
for large collections. How many CDs does the guy need to rip? If it’s
fewer than 3000 CDs, buy a suitable PC and install VortexBox on it (or
buy one from VortexBox all ready to go for $359). VortexBox runs SC and
does auto CD ripping. Buy a video output card for the Vortexbox PC that
matches the LCD input. Now SC is displayed on the big TV. Add a
wireless mouse and keyboard and the guy can do everything from his easy
chair in front of the big screen. If he has plenty of extra bucks he
could have two PCs, one running VortexBox and another running WHS or HP
Media Server to put the pics on the TV. If he has enough computer skills
to use dBpowerAmp on its own, then just go the WHS or HP Media Server
route adding SC and dBpowerAmp to the installed software. Many routes
to take here depending on skill level and how automatic it needs to
be.

As for album art with dBpowerAmp, it gets it right more times then not.
Everybody tends to have some CDs that don't match or can’t be found, for
those few all one needs is a scanner or AIO printer to put the cover art
in. The biggest issue I find is that most of the databases put the
latest release cover art in. So even though cover art was available for
most of my CDs, I had to scan in about 200 to match what I actually had
(which was a little over 1 percent). Sure the title and artist match
but it's not what I am used to seeing when I think of the album. Labels
being sold and the new label wanting to update the cover art and make it
their release cause most of these.

You say you have speakers connected to your machine. Are you running
SqueezeSlave on the machine or something? I do that with VortexBox, run
SqueezeSlave locally and use that as part of my multizone Audio. In that
case you can just play the music through a soft mixer attached to the
sound card. You don't need to do anything to SC or SrueezeSlave. This
will not work if your using a hardware player such as a SqueezeBox.

From your post, it looks like you started with an MP3HD to start
 with
and end up with WAV files to me Steve. Don't follow what that
 proved?

If you look above, you can see that Steve started with a WAV file
(test.wav) and used the encoder to turn it into an mp3HD file
 (mp3HD.mp3).

He then used the decoder to turn that mp3HD file into a new WAV file
  (mp3HD.wav).

He then compared the two WAV files: the original, and the
WAV-mp3HD-WAV file, and found them to be identical.

Clearly, mp3HD can be described as lossless, at least, if not
 actually
  useful :)

Exactly right. The wav turns into an mp3HD file and then the decoder
turns it back into a new wav. These are not just the same file in
file size, but the Windows file compare utility shows them to be
exactly the same, bit for bit. Test.wav and mp3HD.wav are the same
file just as surely as if you copied the original file using the copy
command, or put the wav in a zip file and then pulled it back out. If
that's not lossless enough for you, then nothing is. Turn a wav into
a FLAC file, and then decompress the FLAC to another wav and compare:
you'll get the same result. Seriously, iPhone, if you doubt the
results, try it for yourself at http://www.all4mp3.com/Software3.aspx
(no Mac version, but I presume you either have Windows or Linux on
 your ToughBook).

For those interested, the mp3HD file I made had a lossy bit that's 320
kbps CBR (if I understood the docs correctly). The file size of the
MP3 was 26,262 kB with no tags, while the same file as a FLAC (level
 8) with no tags is 21,315 kB. So about 5 MB difference, which would,
I guess, account for the lossy bit. Not awful, but no great shakes.
The wav I used to do the testing was actually uncompressed from a FLAC
that I ripped with EAC from the newest Antony and the Johnsons CD.
 It's 4 and a half minutes, 16 bit stereo, 44.1 kHz.

 -Steve

I am following what you did now and it’s closer but I’m still not
convinced. Will rip a CD with MP3HD and see what I see. But this is all
still just storage. Is it really truly lossless when played back? If I
had an MP3HD player I could check it with the program Phil and I have
been using to check equipment.

Also, if the files are as large as they are, why bother? So what if the
file will supposedly play lossless on a MP3HD player and the same file
can be used on my iPhone. It takes up way to much room! I am still much
better off having the two libraries I have now. One ripped to FLAC and
one converted to MP3 from the FLAC files. PC/Server storage is big time
cheap and getting cheaper every day. Why would I have a single
collection of MP3HD files that is going to severally limit the number
of songs I can put on my iPhone?

But ripnas is silent and can sit in the same room. Making cd ripping a

depending on skill level and how automatic it needs to be.

It MUST be fully automatic and as I said the guy doesn't want to even
know that he is using a computer. Computers are work music is
relaxation.
Get the point?
Btw.: The Linngui works on a computer which could be connected to that
Sony display. What about a Linn DS?
Album art browsing? Has any one had the chance to compare sc7 to
linngui? It really should be straight forward and cost or brand or even
a multitude of features is largely irrelevant.
It has to simply work.
I like SC7 for it's possibility to be adapted to taste and because it
is open source based on standards like html/perl which makes things
quite accessible for me. But SC7 always has a taste of a hackerish sort
of feeling.

So you understand that all of the audio information is present in the
file, but you're not convinced as to the quality of the decoding
software? Fair enough, I guess. AFAIK, the WinAmp plugin included
with the encoder/decoder package is the only thing available right now
that plays back the format. If that is poor in quality (I haven't
done any double-blind listening tests or anything), that doesn't make
the format not lossless any more than a bad gzip implementation makes
the gzip format lossy. The data is all in there, so it definitely
*can* be played back losslessly; if the bits are there, they can be
played back.

Also, if the files are as large as they are, why bother? So what if the

Couldn't agree more. I don't see the utility in this format. I do
the same thing with parallel FLAC/AAC libraries. If iTunes could
handle a hybrid lossy/lossless format like WavPack, I'd probably be on
board with that, however.

 Some 'interesting discussion'
 (http://www.hydrogenaudio.org/forums/index.php?showtopic=70548) also

It sounds like the concept is kind similar to MP3pro. Standard players
ignore the pro data, while pro players use _both_ streams together.

In this case, it's a residual or error signal attached to an mp3
(stored in a large id3 tag). If you just decode the mp3 you get mp3
sound. If you decode the mp3 and then add the residual to it, you get
the original PCM signal.

This adheres to the basic principle of most lossless encoders: first
attempt to approximate the signal with a simpler function, then record
the difference between the original and the approximated, and store
this as the residual. The residual is (hopefully) a low amplitude
signal and so it can be further compressed with (eg) rice coding.

I think people had tried this in the past with mp3, and found it to be
a poor basis for a lossless codec. Since MP3 was not designed for that
purpose, the psychoacoustic model allows for phase change, masking, and
other effects which although minimally audible, can drastically alter
the wave shape, making the encoder generate excessive residual
content.

So probably they've incorporated a special-purpose mp3 encoder which
tries to give a small residual signal for the purpose of creating a
lossless encoding. But there's a catch: this doesn't necessarily make
for a good-sounding mp3. In fact, it's an additional constraint, so it
necessarily compromises the quality of the lossy rendition compared to,
say, lame at the same lossy bitrate.

So as I understand it, the selling point of the format is the grotesque
marriage of these two feature sets:

1. When you're using it as a lossless codec, it has worse encode/decode
cost and larger file sizes than FLAC, and a royalty to pay.

2. When you're using it as a lossy codec, it has worse sound quality
than lame and drastically larger file size, and a royalty to pay.
Perhaps the larger filesize could be mitigated by automatically
stripping out the residual when synching to a standard mp3 player.

That's not right at all! You're on what is referred to as different
subnets. If your SC server is 192.168.15.2 then your SB should be
assigned a 192.168.15.x IP address.

Something is wrong with your network. Please describe it in more
detail. Do you have a modem (cable, DSL)? Do you have a router?

The fact that they're getting addresses on two different subnets seems
to imply that maybe there are two DHCP servers operating on your
network. That will screw things up for sure and probably explains all
the network problems you're having. A DHCP server assigns IP addresses
to devices on your network. Usually your router does this but your
modem could also be doing this. If two of them are doing it at the
same time - chaos and devices that can't connect to each other.

A DHCP server will usually assign numbers based on its own IP. So it

once it does this, the SB can't access the other portion of the

I got a bit lost with your post, Mark. I have pretty basic computer
knowledge compared to most of you guys!!!

So my set up is quite simple I think. Cable modem plugged into a
Belkin router. PC is hardwired to the router. Mac laptop and SB
connect through wireless to the router.

To log into the Belkin settings I use the IP address 192.168.2.1. When
I went into the router settings (most of it doesn't make sense to me), I
noticed that the DCHP client list had all similar IP addresses - as you
described (192.168.2.3, 192.168.2.4 etc.). Also my PC isn't listed
with the other equipment on the DCHP client list.

I think I understand what you mean about the router and modem competing
with each other. What can I do to fix this (remember my limited
computer knowledge!!)?

Just to recap:
My PC has an IP Address of 192.168.15.2 (with a gateway IP of
192.168.15.1).
All my other equipment seems to have IP addresses starting with
192.168.2.X

Don't mean to drone on about this but a trial with a wired ( cable )
connection would clarify things. You could disconnect the SB from your
system, get a short crossover cable at Radio Shack or the like or Ebay
if you don't mind waiting a few days then connect it to your computer.
You would quickly be able to tell if the SB is working by trying to
connect to Squeezenetwork. By the way if you haven't unplugged the SB
for a few minutes then re-connected it I'd recommend you give that a
try. When you power it up hold down the Add button then go through the
setup routine.

avta: the problem isn't with the SB - it was able to connect to
SqueezeNet, so that is good. The problem is that the server has the
wrong IP for the network: as observed by Mark Lanctot.

Liggy: Do this - open up a command (startrun 'cmd', ENTER) window on
the XP machine, and run 'ipconfig /release /renew', then paste back
here the results of 'ipconfig /all'. (right click, then 'Mark'
highlight then paste into notepad.

I'll get my hubby to look around at work and see if he has the right
cable... you never know! It would definitely clear up some questions.

I've done the factory reset thing a few times - every time I change the
setting on the PC, just to be sure.

At the moment I'm leaning towards it being a network problem. I set up
a network at my husband's office (small company, only 4 computers) and I
have to say it's never worked that well for file sharing etc. So I'm
thinking there is something that I'm doing wrong!!!

Yep, it's using the wrong DHCP server - do you know how to manually
enter the IP? Make it look like the other devices on your net
192.168.2.X, with the X being something like '100', and the gateway
being '1', just make sure there are no conflicts. Works better anyways
with the server having a static IP. Or you could change all the masks
to be 255.255.0.0 - but that's not quite 'correct'!

I think this happens whenever you change something using the MIP

BTW. There is a ton of very out of date and misleading info in the wiki

Which particular articles? Feel free to add a warning line to them. It's a

However, this time the two items in the list are; the just entered IP

The interesting thing (at least to me) is that SP obviously connected

came up on initial run with that listed in the Music Sources list.

Re: [slim] iPeng Application 1.0 now on the App Store

2009-03-24 Thread yesongs

Pippin, thanks for a great app!

I had just discovered the Simplify app this past Friday, and spent
most of the weekend thinking damn, I wish I could use the Itouch as my
remote

Did a search on a lark Monday morning and found the app - a wonderful
surprise, and worked a treat right out of the box eas well

I'm using a 8 gig Itouch - what kind of battery life should I expect
using this pretty much exclusively as the remote?

Thanks again, this app really takes the duet to another level

Err.. no. That's not a good sign. That means, even though I fed all
that text into the 1.1 description iTunes connect obviously set it to
active already for 1.0.5 - although the 1.0.5 description in iTunes
connect that I see still has the old text.

I definitely don't like this. It promises features only the 1.1 will
have and Apple's not approved that, yet. Will at least do some
temporary changes.

The strange thing is it only applies to the text, the images and icons
are still correct (both will also change with 1.1)

Thank you Allan! That makes it so much simpler!!!

OK, so now I think I'm going mad! I've been entering the details as
you've all suggested but it's just not working!!

I've entered the following:
IP Address: 192.168.2.6 (I picked .6 because I had all the other ones
up to that, keeping it nice and neat)
Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway: 192.168.2.1

DNS Primary: 68.87.64.204
DNS Secondary: 68.87.66.204

When I do that, it just won't connect to the internet. I have to keep
switiching back to 'Obtain IP Address Automatically' to get back
online. I did try re-starting the computer after I had changed it one
time and that didn't help. Do I need to re-boot the router or modem as
well?

[slim] Names of radio stations

2009-03-24 Thread greg from winnipeg

I've made an internet radio station a favourite in squeezecenter. In
this case it is CBC Radio One in Winnipeg. The URL of the station is:
http://www.cbc.ca/mrl2/livemedia/cbcr1-winnipeg.asx

When the station starts playing, the name that I gave it (CBC1
Winnipeg) is displayed but after a while, the name becomes:

mms://a808.l961636807.c9616.g.lm.akamaistream.net/D/808/9616/v0001/reflector:36807

This is displayed on the squeezcenter webpage as well as my Boom and SB
Classic.

Any suggestions on how to keep the original title?

the other devices should then be connected to the LAN ports on the

He will drop his cds all together and
He will buy a ripping station with SC7 on it and a transporter if:
He can sit back in his easy chair and

fancy tft screen in full size, select the album he wants and make the
 transporter play it.
 Any ideas?
Cause if I present a good solution my friend might consider asking me
 an other time. ;))

Have you considered using a ripping service? Many of the comercial
services use dbPoweramp. This would allow your user to have his entire
collection ripped when the install of the hardware is complete. Instead
of sometime later after he has had the opportunity to feed all discs
into the RipNas.

Re: [slim] Squeezebox (v.3) can't connect to SqueezeCenter??

2009-03-24 Thread tcutting

Make sure again that the modem is connected to the correct port of the
router - usually there is a special LAN port- make sure that's the
one connected to the router and that the PC is connected to one of the
local ports.
Also, you may try DHCP again, but making sure you specify the router's
address as the DHCP server.
Can the Mac see the internet? (I believe you say the PC/Squeezecenter
server can).
Another thing to try is if you can get your local devices to see each
other without connecting to the cable modem - disconnect the cable modem
from the router, and restart everything (try turning all the devices
off, turn on the router and give it some time to start, then the local
PC, and then the wireless devices).

Re: [slim] Squeezebox (v.3) can't connect to SqueezeCenter??

2009-03-24 Thread LiggySasha

OK then... I think I'm getting somewhere!!

I double-doubled checked all the cables etc. My PC was plugged into my
Vonage box, then into the router. I didn't think this would be a
problem, but I cut out the middle man anyway, and plugged it straight
into the router instead. (This didn't solve the problem, but ruled
another thing out).

Then I did a bit of playing around and found the problem is Comcasts
DNS addresses. Seems to be a lot of chatter on the internet about how
crappy they are! So I found OpenDNS and used their address instead...
and it works!!! Thank goodness!

And even better Squeezebox can connect to Squeezecenter!!! So
happy!!!

So my last question (I promise!)... is there any security risk or
danger using an open DNS rather than Comcast? I don't want to be
exposing myself to anything/one nasty!

Lastly... thank you, thank you, thank you, thank you EVERYONE that has
helped me! I really appreciate your patients with me!
