Re: [slim] mp3HD
I'll keep my library of FLAC files. But I can see a few positive angles. To me this is a mix between marketing and the technical facts. Ok. We have a new 'HD' format. Which in itself is kinda funny, CDs introduced in 1982 contains about the same ammount and quality of information that this 'HD' format can do. Talk about progress ;) But it's all about marketing ('HD' branding hype), earning money (licensing), and so on. To me the value will be that this may contribute to making more online sources of lossless content available. Sure, they will probably price the 'HD' edition of music tracks higher (hype + money). And I will need to convert the mp3HD to FLAC. But in this day and age, I'm so tired of having to buy physical CDs (sometimes whole album). Just to get a lossless edition of a single music track that interests me. So if mp3HD in some ways contribute to lossless music beeing more avilable online. Bring it on :) -- sveinan sveinan's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=16618 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=61694 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss
[slim] Help me getting a job. ;)
Hello, A friend of mine runs a business which is about hifi and home cinema. He has a customer who has: a 40 inch Sony tft display where he uses to watch movies. A decent hifi system where he now listens to cds. He will drop his cds all together and He will buy a ripping station with SC7 on it and a transporter if: He can sit back in his easy chair and - browse album art (preferably in iphonish cover flow fashion on his fancy tft screen in full size, select the album he wants and make the transporter play it. The ripping part of it is well solved. The device rips cds automatically and even gets the so wanted album art in most cases. We could add a computer running SC7 to the setup. The thing I can not solve is: How is the computer i.e the sc7 interface navigated in a way so that the said customer does not need to care if he has a computer in his hifi rack? I am looking for something wireless. Perhaps something that even works without opening a web browser? Have looked at moose. Any ideas? Re: [slim] MusicIP: Can't get it to work on my new PC with SC
Cheers chaps. I've started off following Michaels advice and completely uninstalled MusicIP, then reinstalled it. Once it had scanned my music folder I started the (API) server, left the software open and got SC to rescan my music. The little MusicIP Mix icons then appeared! Cheers. Michael, I originally set up MusicIP in headless mode according to instructions provided on the Spicefly web site. http://spicefly.com/index.php?option=com_content&task=category§ionid=5&id=16&Itemid=32 This set up has been recommended by other MusicIP/SlimCenter users. As I really do not understand how MusicIP works and the relationship between it and SlimCenter I thought it best to follow them entirely and not deviate. Moonbase, thanks! This evening I will need to set up MusicIP as a servive so that it starts automatically with my PC and before SlimCenter (using registry "depend on service" fix). I am confused aboiut installing the web gui and changing the port to 10003 (so that it does not interfere with the software gui)... I only used the web gui to refresh the cache. Anyway, I certainly do not want to leave the software application open all the time and I'd like SlimCenter to be updated with new MusicIP info automatically. I'll read your helpful post more fully this evening. Re: [slim] mp3HD
To me MP3HD looks like pure marketing (just trying to sell more licenses). :( 1) MP3HD is NOT HD! It is just 16bit/44.1KHz stereo. 2) They refer to MP3HD as a convenient format, but it has lost the #1 convenience of a MP3 file - file size! MP3HD is BIG. WavPack solution with 2 files (lossy+correction) is more convenient, because one can take only lossy part if it's necessary. 3) MP3HD is ONLY HALF compatible with old players. Only lossy MP3 part can be played, but storage space is taken. 4) MP3HD does not solve any problems concerning lossless audio storage. FLAC does much better job and provides more freedom. And the list goes on ... So I think MP3HD will die soon, because it does not solve anything... -- Bytec Bytec's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=17676 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=61694 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

Hello, using a squeezebox controller would be an option but I wonder if the display is big enough. I imagine a person who is perhaps a bit aged and has trouble reading the display without his glases. Haven't any clue about the real world user experience with the controller (I am fully blind myself) but a 40 inch lcd is a different story isn't it? The tp costs about 2k bugs and the ripnas will go for an other 1k. So money isn't an object as long as he's got the album art and a really blowing user experience. btw. How do you guys get album art? There is a feature in SC7.3? Ripnas is claimed to do that as well but I read that it doesn't always get the covers right. Any hints on getting album art would be apreciated as well. MIP has a built in web server listening on port 10002. This web server allows for some queries and commands. SC is sending HTTP requests to that port to get a list of tracks known by MIP, start mixes etc. I think you can follow Spicefly's instructions about setting up the service (second part). Just ignore the first part about the GUI and changing ports etc. If the service is already running in the background, then you won't start it again from the GUI. SC7 works OK for a blind person but is it sexy by > the looks? > How to dress the baby to enhance it's sex apeal? OK, I'll have a go at this. Why pay big bucks for RipNAS? Dont get me wrong, its a great product in a small package but can get expensive for large collections. How many CDs does the guy need to rip? If its fewer than 3000 CDs, buy a suitable PC and install VortexBox on it (or buy one from VortexBox all ready to go for $359). VortexBox runs SC and does auto CD ripping. Buy a video output card for the Vortexbox PC that matches the LCD input. Now SC is displayed on the big TV. Add a wireless mouse and keyboard and the guy can do everything from his easy chair in front of the big screen. If he has plenty of extra bucks he could have two PCs, one running VortexBox and another running WHS or HP Media Server to put the pics on the TV. If he has enough computer skills to use dBpowerAmp on its own, then just go the WHS or HP Media Server route adding SC and dBpowerAmp to the installed software. Many routes to take here depending on skill level and how automatic it needs to be. As for album art with dBpowerAmp, it gets it right more times then not. Everybody tends to have some CDs that don't match or cant be found, for those few all one needs is a scanner or AIO printer to put the cover art in. The biggest issue I find is that most of the databases put the latest release cover art in. So even though cover art was available for most of my CDs, I had to scan in about 200 to match what I actually had (which was a little over 1 percent). Sure the title and artist match but it's not what I am used to seeing when I think of the album. Labels being sold and the new label wanting to update the cover art and make it their release cause most of these. -- iPhone *iPhone* Media Room: Transporter, VTL TL-6.5 Signature Pre-Amp, Ayre MX-R Mono's, Vandersteen Quatro, VeraStarr 6.4SE 6-channel Amp, VCC-5 Reference Center, four VSM-1 Signatures, Runco RS 900 CineWide AutoScope 2.35:1 Living Room: Duet, ADCOM GTP-870HD, Cinepro 3K6SE III Gold, Vandersteen Model 3A Signature, Two 2Wq subs, VCC-2, Two VSM-1 Kitchen: Squeezebox BOOM Bedroom: SB3, GFR-700HD, Thiel 2.3, Second Boom Home Office: SB3, NAD C370, two VSM-1 Home Gym: SB3, Parasound Vamp v.3, Thiel PowerPoint 1.2 House Portable: SB3, Audioengine A5 Thunderbird: Duet, Mac Mini Expedition: SB3, ToughBook iPhone's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=13622 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=61727 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

Computers are work music is relaxation. Get the point? Btw.: The Linngui works on a computer which could be connected to that Sony display. What about a Linn DS? Album art browsing? Has any one had the chance to compare sc7 to linngui? It really should be straight forward and cost or brand or even a multitude of features is largely irrelevant. It has to simply work. I like SC7 for it's possibility to be adapted to taste and because it is open source based on standards like html/perl which makes things quite accessible for me. But SC7 always has a taste of a hackerish sort of feeling. -- jaysung jaysung's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=12375 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=61727 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

So you understand that all of the audio information is present in the file, but you're not convinced as to the quality of the decoding software? Fair enough, I guess. AFAIK, the WinAmp plugin included with the encoder/decoder package is the only thing available right now that plays back the format. If that is poor in quality (I haven't done any double-blind listening tests or anything), that doesn't make the format not lossless any more than a bad gzip implementation makes the gzip format lossy. The data is all in there, so it definitely *can* be played back losslessly; if the bits are there, they can be played back. > Also, if the files are as large as they are, why bother? Might be worth a ferret around in the network properties for the network device used on the PC (wireless or wired). You could make sure File and Printer sharing is on, 'though that shouldn't affect the SB. You must have TCP/IP enabled, or you wouldn't be getting an IP and seeing the internet. Moonbase;409590 Wrote: > Some 'interesting discussion' > (http://www.hydrogenaudio.org/forums/index.php?showtopic=70548) also > going on over in the -hydrogenaudio- forums. It sounds like the concept is kind similar to MP3pro. Standard players ignore the "pro" data, while pro players use _both_ streams together. In this case, it's a residual or "error signal" attached to an mp3 (stored in a large id3 tag). If you just decode the mp3 you get mp3 sound. If you decode the mp3 and then add the residual to it, you get the original PCM signal. This adheres to the basic principle of most lossless encoders: first attempt to approximate the signal with a simpler function, then record the difference between the original and the approximated, and store this as the residual. The residual is (hopefully) a low amplitude signal and so it can be further compressed with (eg) rice coding. I think people had tried this in the past with mp3, and found it to be a poor basis for a lossless codec. Since MP3 was not designed for that purpose, the psychoacoustic model allows for phase change, masking, and other effects which although minimally audible, can drastically alter the wave shape, making the encoder generate excessive residual content. So probably they've incorporated a special-purpose mp3 encoder which tries to give a small residual signal for the purpose of creating a lossless encoding. But there's a catch: this doesn't necessarily make for a good-sounding mp3. In fact, it's an additional constraint, so it necessarily compromises the quality of the lossy rendition compared to, say, lame at the same lossy bitrate. So as I understand it, the selling point of the format is the grotesque marriage of these two feature sets: 1. When you're using it as a lossless codec, it has worse encode/decode cost and larger file sizes than FLAC, and a royalty to pay. 2. When you're using it as a lossy codec, it has worse sound quality than lame and drastically larger file size, and a royalty to pay. Perhaps the larger filesize could be mitigated by automatically stripping out the residual when synching to a standard mp3 player. -- seanadams seanadams's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=3 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=61694 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

I got a bit lost with your post, Mark. I have pretty basic computer knowledge compared to most of you guys!!! So my set up is quite simple I think. Cable modem plugged into a Belkin router. PC is hardwired to the router. Mac laptop and SB connect through wireless to the router. To log into the Belkin settings I use the IP address 192.168.2.1. Also my PC isn't listed with the other equipment on the DCHP client list. I think I understand what you mean about the router and modem competing with each other. What can I do to fix this (remember my limited computer knowledge!!)? Just to recap: My PC has an IP Address of 192.168.15.2 (with a gateway IP of 192.168.15.1). Don't mean to drone on about this but a trial with a wired ( cable ) connection would clarify things. You could disconnect the SB from your system, get a short crossover cable at Radio Shack or the like or Ebay if you don't mind waiting a few days then connect it to your computer. Re: [slim] Squeezebox (v.3) can't connect to SqueezeCenter??
Yep, it's using the wrong DHCP server - do you know how to manually enter the IP? Make it look like the other devices on your net 192.168.2.X, with the X being something like '100', and the gateway being '1', just make sure there are no conflicts. Works better anyways with the server having a static IP. Or you could change all the masks to be 255.255.0.0 - but that's not quite 'correct'! -- alZmtbr alZmtbr's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=8773 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=61709 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

When I press the right arrow key I am taken to the Music Source page. This page lists my server (which is aptly named "server") and "Other Server". Selecting serve causes the app to attempt to connect but after many attempts it is for not able to. Selecting "Other Server" takes me to a page that allows me to enter the IP address of the server. When I do this, and then press the right arrow key to continue I am again delivered to the Music Source page. However, this time the two items in the list are; the just entered IP and the "Other Server" item. Selecting the newly entered IP does nothing; I see the page look as though it is trying to change but nothing actually happens. The interesting thing (at least to me) is that SP obviously connected at some level to my server as it was automatically aware of its presence...I never told SP that my servers name was "server" it (SP) came up on initial run with that listed in the Music Sources list. Many of the comercial services use dbPoweramp. This would allow your user to have his entire collection ripped when the install of the hardware is complete. Instead of sometime later after he has had the opportunity to feed all discs into the RipNas. -- sredmyer Steve Redmyer www.RipitDigital.com sredmyer's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=23527 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=61727 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

PC into the router, then router into the modem (modem to the wall!). The Mac and everything is wireless. No idea what is going wrong now!!! Re: [slim] Squeezebox (v.3) can't connect to SqueezeCenter??
Make sure again that the modem is connected to the correct port of the router - usually there is a "special" LAN port- make sure that's the one connected to the router and that the PC is connected to one of the "local" ports. Also, you may try DHCP again, but making sure you specify the router's address as the DHCP server. Can the Mac see the internet? (I believe you say the PC/Squeezecenter server can). Another thing to try is if you can get your local devices to "see" each other without connecting to the cable modem - disconnect the cable modem from the router, and restart everything (try turning all the devices off, turn on the router and give it some time to start, then the local PC, and then the wireless devices). -- tcutting tcutting's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=17402 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=61709 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss
Re: [slim] Squeezebox (v.3) can't connect to SqueezeCenter??
OK then... I think I'm getting somewhere!! I double-doubled checked all the cables etc. My PC was plugged into my Vonage box, then into the router. I didn't think this would be a problem, but I cut out the middle man anyway, and plugged it straight into the router instead. (This didn't solve the problem, but ruled another thing out). Then I did a bit of playing around and found the problem is Comcasts DNS addresses. Seems to be a lot of chatter on the internet about how crappy they are! So I found OpenDNS and used their address instead... and it works!!! Thank goodness! And even better Squeezebox can connect to Squeezecenter!!! So happy!!! So my last question (I promise!)... is there any security risk or danger using an open DNS rather than Comcast? I don't want to be exposing myself to anything/one nasty! Lastly... thank you, thank you, thank you, thank you EVERYONE that has helped me! I really appreciate your patients with me! -- LiggySasha LiggySasha's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=18906 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=61709 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

Re: [slim] Connect to server via router?
If possible make you server hardwired to your router. Wireless -> router -> wireless -> transporter can cause problem. Try to only have one wireless hop. -- agillis rip, tag, get cover art All you do is insert the CD! http://vortexbox.org agillis Lead Developer VortexBox agillis's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=21140 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=61573 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss
