Re: [slim] Is there non-web browser alternative to use with my SB3?

2009-04-02 Thread Peter Stockwell

I liked using iTunes with airport express, but my airport express died.
I bought an SB classic as the replacement.

My tunes are on a Drobo attached by firewire to a mac mini. I have the
iTunesUpdate plug in and iPeng. This gets me very close to the
mac/itunes/ipod touch experience I had before. I like the direct
remote control for the Squeezebox.

What I don't like with Squeezecenter is the web interface, comparred
with iTunes I find it clunky. I have an iTunes account so most artwork
is found automatically (Funnily, it only displays on the first song in
Squeezecenter), iTunes keeps the music file organised. I can find
artists and the albums easily outside iTunes if I want. If an album
doesn't have artwork I can use amazon, for example, for a cover photo
and then easily add it to iTunes via iPhoto. For a mac user, all of
this is very easy to use.

I'm considering going back to the airport express, because of the
overall simplicity and I cannot hear any major difference in sound
quality, that's sisng the same DAC before my hifi system.

Peter

I don't think they made an SB3 without a wireless card in it.
You sure it's an SB3? Not an SB1 or SB2 or other?

Have you tried resetting it and connecting via WiFi?

Re: [slim] Napster - Now Playing List issue

2009-04-02 Thread Flipper

I'm not sure. It could be for the first problem I reported. I will play
around a bit to recreate the problem and check the list carefully. Part
of the problem of course is going to be that I can't scroll through the
entire list to see all of the playlist.

For the second issue I reported, there are no extra items in the
playlist. Would they show up on the controller? What I see from the
controller is the time to play for the song that just finished changes
to 59:xx and starts counting down again. I have not waited the hour to
see if the next song will play after that or not.

No IIRC the items do NOT show up, yet they are in the playlist (on the
server and player) and that's exactly what inhibits the progressing.
You can see them in the communication logs and, I'm not sure, but I
think also they will be shown in the number of tracks, so you will see
a playlist with 11 items and NowPlaying says 1 of 12 or something
like that.

Re: [slim] can a wired SB3 be upgraded to wireless?

2009-04-02 Thread Mark Lanctot

The hardware should be there (mini-PCI slot) and the firmware should
support it as there is only one version of the firmware.

The tricky part will be finding the exact wireless card. You have to
find the exact one, and IIRC it's an Asian OEM that only sells to
corporations. The model number has been listed on this forum but I'm
not sure what search terms would find it.

It would probably be easier and even cheaper to wire it to a wireless
bridge.

Re: [slim] New User

2009-04-02 Thread JeffHart

Unless you already have an amp speakers ready to go, you may want to
consider looking at the Boom. For the price of a Classic, you end up
with a complete system that will most likely sound as well as the
Classic plus any stereo setup less than $250-300.

If you have any type of stereo setup you should be able to connect the
Classic. I went the Receiver route due to price size and have them
connected to two component setups, two bookshelf systems and a
Cambridge Soundworks CD/Radio. Had to use a different cable for the
last set up, fortunately I had an RCA to 3.5 mini plug cable on hand.

Either way the Classic and the Boom are great choices and in many cases
easier to setup than the Duet combo (controller receiver)

Cheers,
Jeff

I expect Mark's right about this. Another alternative would be to bring
the wire to where you're using the SB3. If you don't want to pull
ethernet cable to that location, you could look into homeplug adapters,
which run the network signal over your home's electrical wires.

I have a wired SB3 that I would like to be able to bridge to a laptop
by connecting a cable from SB3. to Laptop. Can this be done? Is it
as easy as just connecting the cable to both (plug play) or do I have
to set something up in the SB3 to be able to do this.

Wired SB3 bridge via Ethernet cable Laptop

 Thanks.

But the SB3 only has one Ethernet port and that's occupied by the
network connection, how are you going to get a cable to the laptop?

Do you mean you will convert the SB3 to wireless? That would work.
You need to go back through network setup (press and hold the left
arrow for 5 seconds) and if you select wireless networking but the SB3
detects a wired connection, it will ask whether you want to bridge.

Jeff, thanks for the response!!! lol

Well, lo and behold, last night I installed the 4/1 nightly build on my
home PC and problems gone! But I wasnt sure if Softsqueeze still had
anything to do with it since I also installed the updated plugin for
softsqueeze, ver 3.9b1

Well, today at work, I installed the 4/1 nightly build and it seems to
be working fine. have not yet installed the updated version of
softsqueeze here.

So...Problem solved and apparently the CVS_build of softsqueeze had
nothing to do with it. I'm happy again.

thanks to ALL THOSE who replied. :)

 Peter

i agree. i think i will leave my SB3 dedicated to Pandora and internet
radio

Re: [slim] Is there non-web browser alternative to use with my SB3?

2009-04-02 Thread aubuti

I realize that this thread has turned on comparisons to Airport Express
and iTunes, but looking at the subject line of the thread again (-Is
there non-web browser alternative to use with my SB3?-) I realize that
we've all missed the obvious answer:

GET OUT FROM BEHIND YOUR COMPUTER AND USE THE REMOTE!

The SC web ui isn't great, and neither is using Squeezeplay to control
a hardware SB. They work, but that's not where the strength of SB lies.
Use an IR remote, or an iPhone (or iPod Touch) with appropriate software
like iPeng, or use the SB Duet Controller. That's what the SB excels at:
listening to your music without having a computer in the room.

The web interface is standard HTML and JavaScript, so you could modify
the pages to assign the command you want to an existing button, or even
place a new button on the pages. Before doing that, however, you might
want to take a look at the other skins for the SC web ui. I don't
remember, but one of them might already have a shuffle button.

attached to the computer. XP sees it as L but that doesn't seem to
work as it says I may need an absolute? drive designation. I'm not
sure what that means with a USB drive. Any idea what the command line
would be to point it to my library?

Re: [slim] Custom.map SqueezeCenter web interface

2009-04-02 Thread Michael Herger
I've mapped the shuffle key in custom.map and this works with the remote
but, and this is probably a silly question, how can I get this to work
in the SqueezeCenter web interface if at all possible?

What would you like it to do?
