Having seen the picture of your modded TP, I'd respectfully suggest
that the handles are no longer the determining factor in its ugliness.

I've been using an SBC with my Transporter for ages now, and never had
a problem. Which doesn't help you, of course, but at least you know they
can be made to work together.

I'd personally be very interested in a version of the Vortexbox without

same with Jeebers, I do rip CDs in another computer and finish the
tagging before moving the music files to the library so whether the
Vortex can rip or not is not important.

I do hope Vortex can run the OS on a SSD, and put all music files in
other harddisk, plus adding the flexibility to add harddisk as an
extension to the existing one.

This means that instead of saving on baggage won't you be doubling it?
You'll have two servers (and two media libraries) to install and keep up

For ampache all you need is a running webserver. It is not much baggage
at all. When you have ampache, there is hardly any maintenance to it.
And you can access your music from anywhere with just a webbrowser. No
need to install any applications on the remote computer, which is good
because at my work i can not install anything on the computers.

chp,

I suspect this is dumb question, but should it be possible for me to
use this as a wrapper for iTunes? (Not as silly as it sounds - I want to
stream audio from iTunes movies to another location - I use the SB
normally when I'm listening to my own library).

Anyway, I have done the obvious and dropped the dsbridge and the lame
dlls in the directory. The red error icon comes up briefly and then
disappears altogether when iTunes comes up.

Could you let me know if:

a) What I'm trying to do should be feasible?
b) Any suggestions as to changes I could make to get the system
working?

Cheers,

[slim] Help Me Get Started!

2009-07-07 Thread MatthewSchenker

Hello,
I have been looking for a good wireless music system in my home, and
after a lot of research and reading reviews I'm ready to dive in and get
going with Logitech's Squeezebox devices.

Currently, I'm using iTunes, with an Airport Extreme router sending a
signal to an Airport Base Station at my stereo system, and I have the
"Remote" app installed on an iPod Touch. The system is OK, but I get a
feeling I can do better!

I'm confused about what Logitech products to get.

Simple requirements:
- Good sound. The system will be my main music source for my living
room, and I'll wire stallite speakers into the kitchen.
- I'm hoping to maintain the ability to tune into my local Public Radio
station!
- A wireless controller that can work anywhere in the house, not only
in a direct line with the music system.

Perhaps the Boom is a good idea? But I can't seem to figure out if
it's a clock radio or a real stereo system.

Then there's all the other Squeezebox products. Reading the
descriptions from Logitech doesn't help me figure out what they do. If
I already have a stereo receiver and good speakers, what do I need to
get set up? Is there a component that will let me replace my receiver
and speakers?

Please help!

Depends on your definition. It's a clock radio with REALLY GOOD sound.
If you want to connect something to your HiFi I'd take something without
speakers and I prefer the Classic, which has a cool display.

Well, have you seen this?
http://www.logitechsqueezebox.com/products/overview.html

The Boom has really good sound for it's size but you probably don't
want to replace your HiFi speakers with it, it's just not that kind of
size.

If you've got a amp or active speakers you could use a Classic or
Transporter (if you want to go the audiophile level) to replace your
receiver. That's what I did and I'm very happy with this setup. All the
music around with only one brick :-)

I've got a Boom in the Kitchen and another Squeezebox with active
speakers in the Bathroom and one in the Dining Room. Cool to sync them
all up.

Oh, and of course I use my iPod to control all of this :-)

[slim] Scrobbling RadioIO adverts to Last.FM?

2009-07-07 Thread morris_minor

I listen a lot to the Real Jazz stream from Radio IO, and the tracks
dutifully get scrobbled [what a lovely word this is!] to Last.FM.

The only problem is that the adverts and sponsors' messages get listed
too. Now I know that I can buy a "Soundpass" for commercial-free
listening, but I'm too tight to do this. Is there a way to block
"tracks" from showing up on Last.FM.

Apart from not wanting "Pepsi Throwup" and "Webex" in my track listing,
the kids's High School Musical tracks don't exactly add to the
street-cred :o)

Any ideas?

Thanks,
Bob

Re: [slim] Streaming to internet?

2009-07-07 Thread bernt

There is no out of the box solution for remote streaming.

As I see it there is two ways to do it.

Open port 9000 on your router pointing to your server.

On your office compter start WMP, iTunes or whatever and open url to
http://your_routers_external_ip_address:9000/stream.mp3.

In your browser connect to http://your_routers_external_ip_address:9000
and controll your player.

or

Install Hamachi (LogMeIn) on your server and your computer at work.

Install Squeezeplay and of you go.

But the best combo for remote streaming is Hamachi, Moose and
Squeezeslave.

Since you're using iTunes and several other Apple products, you probably
need to be aware that you can't use a Squeezebox to stream DRM-protected
music that you downloaded from the iTunes store.

The good news is that just about every other file type is OK, including
any of the newer files from the iTunes store without DRM.

As pippin says, your local NPR stations are most likely available. You
can check this easily, pre-purchase, in many ways.
Two of the quickest ways:

1. Go to www.SqueezeNetwork.com (need to create a free account) then
navigate to Browse > Local see if your desired NPR's are listed

2. Post your NPR call letters and city so I can look it up for you
(but what's the fun in that). :)

Re: [slim] SC 7.3.3 FreeNAS and Itunes Plus

2009-07-07 Thread cailloux

You shouldn't need to copy/paste the contents into the convert file (an
SC update can muck that up); you should just add it to the
custom-convert file.

That said, if you are still having an issue, you'll need to turn on
player streaming debugging and post the logs to see what the issue is:

You can do that in the following way in Squeezecenter:
Settings -> Advanced -> Logging
Set player.streaming to "Debug"

And then provide the relevant sections from the server.log.

Re: [slim] Help Me Get Started!

2009-07-07 Thread dsdreamer

Consider making a software only trial of the SqueezeBox system. By
which, I mean download the latest released version of SqueezeCenter from
http://www.logitechsqueezebox.com/support/download-squeezecenter.html,
on the same machine you use to run iTunes, and point it at your iTunes
library so that it can do a scan and discover you music collection.
Browse around in the web interface, and check how much of it was
successfully discovered and categorized.

Then you could try streaming to a software player on another machine
(pref. a WiFi enabled laptop), using SqueezePlay or SoftSqueeze. You
can get SqueezePlay (beta) from here
http://downloads.slimdevices.com/nightly/?ver=7.3

You may have a few issues to resolve before everything is working to
your satisfaction and comfort, but once you are in that state you can be
highly confident that your first hardware player is going to be set up
and running in a matter of minutes. Of course this kind of testing only
gives you an impression of the software ecosystem, and does not
represent the experience of having an actual hardware player (which also
comes with support from Logitech staff).

Pippin is being somewhat modest: I will say that his iPhone / Touch app
is an excellent way to get control of your entire Squeezebox
client/server system from the palm of your hand, and is available on the
App store for a modest fee.

Re: [slim] DSBridge - A simpler way to stream Spotify

2009-07-07 Thread chp

*Laz*, I did look into iTunes right now, and it seems that it happens
because the networking is not initialized when I need it to be. However,
I tried adding a configurable delay to when the HTTP server is
initializing, and that did the trick and I got music streaming. One
issue I noticed is that iTunes is controlling the volume in software, so
I'll go ahead and add an option to mute the source when someone is
connected.

This will go into the next release.

*Gurkburk*, if the icon is green it means it is connected. Does the
icon turn green before you connect with SC? It does sound like data is
not flowing to that client, I do not support more than one client at
this time. I have had this running on W7 RC1 successfully.

I support this notion entirely. All of it. I ran softsqueeze (the
transporter skin, of course :)) for a year before buying a SB3
(classic).

It gave me confidence that SC was easy - that FLAC really does make a
heap of difference over everything else, that it all worked nicely with
my system. The actual audio quality improvement when I finally plugged
the classic in was just wild (in fairness it didn't have much to beat
against a $10 soundcard).

And I'm also a very happy iPeng user.

Overall don't be too put off by the trouble shooting issues you see
around this place. Avoid the Duet, don't try and fiddle too much, and
it's just about plug and play. I call it, plug, learn, fiddle, read,
play - but then it's smooth sailing...

Re: [slim] Ultimate server for SqueezeCenter?

2009-07-07 Thread regalma1

I would put power savings as number one. Noise can be addressed by
placement. The CD ripper would seem to be superfluous since pretty much
every PC nowadays has one. Also, ripping, tagging, file organizing etc
is easier done on a full PC.

The Buffalo TerraStation Mini set up to run SC would be ideal. Super
efficient, tiny, and quiet.

Re: [slim] DSBridge - A simpler way to stream Spotify

2009-07-07 Thread chp

New release time!

http://dsbridge.googlecode.com/files/dsbridge-20090707-bin.zip

Changes:

- Now loads configuration from the module path, not current directory
- HTTP server can now both delay creation (to allow for the hosting
application
to initialize) and initialize networking on its own
- Added support to mute the source while streaming
- Encoder now rate-limits reading data from the input buffer to prevent
read-
ahead and drifting
- RingBuffer can now discard data from the tail
- added some re-parsing of dashes

This release contains corrections that should improve the drifting; it
does cut off a tiny bit of sound when it stops playing, but I'm working
on that.

It also does some fixes for iTunes support - this does require the new
dsbridge.ini or it will not work. Also the status icon will not be
visible.

Also, I switched the bitrate to 320kbps per default for both Spotify
and iTunes (still 192kbps if not configured), and it will mute the sound
when you start streaming (so you don't have to mute the application
itself). If you do not like this behaviour, change MuteWhileStreaming to
0 for the application that you are using. All of this is in
dsbridge.ini.

some very good prices there, but it seems only amazon have lowered there
prices and some items are still cheaper elsewhere, ie superfi reciever
is only £80.

£120 is a bargain for the classic, almost tempting to buy though i'm
holding out for the touch.
I'm not convinced this is a a sign of new products really, they have
been selling the boom at 150 for a while which is cheaper than a lot of
places.

We are talking about like $18 for an optical drive or double that for a
slimline. The optical drive provides an easy way for recovery/updating
as well as local ripping (which is the all-in-one idea behind the box in
the first place).

I know they are trying to keep it simple, but maybe it is time to cover
more users other then turnkey beginners. Have a Standard Vortexbox
Server (SVS) which is a turnkey all-in-one Squeezebox Server for small
to medium CD collections. A Deluxe Vortexbox Server (DVS) which has more
TBs of storage for medium to large CD collections. And a Custom
Vortexbox Server (CVS) which is ordered user configured with X storage
and with/without optical drive for experienced users (already ripped
collection).

I have my collection already ripped but would still want an optical
drive as a backup, but that's just me. The fit-PC2 is a different story
as it doesn't have room for a optical in the first place and when for 10
dollars less one gets a Vortexbox with the optical drive and a one TB
drive included Vortexbox seems to make some sense. So building on the
Vortexbox with larger storage options does make sense to me. Don't get
me wrong, the fit-PC2 makes a great super small Squeezebox Server. And I
see several applications for it, but its price and lack of storage space
reduces the number of people its suited for especially with the
Vortexbox already available for less money.

I also had high hopes for Ion when I first saw it, but the price is
ridiculous.

I have vortexbox running on a server I built from Mini-itx.com, within
the server is a slimline cd drive.

I re-ripped my entire collection to FLAC using vortexbox and, for me,
it was a god-send for speeding up and automating this process. Ongoing
as well its great, I got a couple of cd's in the post today and have
popped them in the server and its served up to my SB 15mins later
without having to turn the laptop on.

Of course tagging is never going to be 100% correct, I'm 75% happy with
the tags/artwork and I'm happier sorting 25% out at a later date then
always having to rip manually with the laptop on.

I appreciate though that for other people they would rather do this
manually and make sure the tags are 100% to their requirements at the
start.

One thing I would like from the server is to access a premiumm
tag/artwork service (which I'd pay for), however I raised this with
Andrew on the Vortexbox forum and I don't think its possible due to
contract type issues.

I just had a quick look at the link above, a web interface to ripping
config would be excellent of course but I imagine would require a lot of
development.

I read this part also with interest

"Upon inserting the CD, RipNAS fetches metadata from the Internet
(using PerfectMeta: from AMG, GD3, Musicbrainz & freedb), if the disc is
not present in any of the 4 online databases (very rare), the disc will
be ejected after about 20 seconds. If the same disc is re-inserted it
will be ripped to 'Unknown Artist x' and Track 1, Track 2, etc."

I think this would be a great feature to add to the ripping process, as
it stands the cd will get ripped even if 'Unknown Artist' so currently I
either use a tag editor to update the FLAC/mp3 files or delete them and
re-rip manually with dbpoweramp, with the above functionality it gives
the user the option on whether to proceed with the rip or do it
manually.

SBR)
- the SBR is blinking red (slow)
- there are no blocked ports/services in the router
- the SBR does not show up under the 'attached devices' section of the

does anyone have an idea why it's not working? i'm absolutely out of
ideas.

thanks!

[slim] Icecast/SHOUTCast Meta Data Displayed?

2009-07-07 Thread PeterGV

I'm considering the purchase of a Squeezebox (Classic, if it matters),
and I'd appreciate some info from the community, please.

I have a very specific use for the Squeezebox in mind, but for it to be
at all useful, it needs to display the Title/Artist information for
MP3-encoded Icecast (internet radio) streams.

Can anybody tell me FOR SURE if it does this?

Peter

[slim] some relief for internet radio in US

2009-07-07 Thread aubuti

Excerpt: "I don’t think anyone’s going to look at this and say, 'I’m
really happy, I got everything I want,'" [Pandora founder Tim]
Westergren said, but he added that he was relieved that the new per-song
fee was low enough that Pandora and similar sites would be able to
survive.

Re: [slim] Icecast/SHOUTCast Meta Data Displayed?

2009-07-07 Thread PeterGV

In fact... if someone were even willing/able to try the specific feed
I'm most interested in, I'd appreciate it. Is that asking too much??

The Icecast feed I'll be listening to is a re-broadcast of a variety of
public safety (police, fire, EMS) radio. If someone with a unit would
even be willing to try it out to let me know, I'd appreciate it. The
URL is http://icecast3.scanamerica.us/nh_hillsborough (note that there
are sometimes long intervals of silence where a blank tag is
displayed).

Thanks so much for your help. I HOPE to become a future Squeezebox
owner!

Peter

[slim] Online radio stations strike big deal on royalties

2009-07-07 Thread mortslim

Online radio stations strike big deal on royalties
By JOELLE TESSLER, AP Technology Writer - Tue Jul 7, 2009 2:41PM EDT

WASHINGTON - The future of Internet radio appears more secure after a
handful of online stations reached an agreement Tuesday to head off a
potentially crippling increase in copyright royalty rates.

The deal is the product of two years of negotiations between webcasters
and copyright holders. In March 2007, a ruling by the federal Copyright
Royalty Board dramatically raised the rates that Internet radio stations
must pay artists and recording labels — leading many online radio
stations to warn that the new rates would put them out of business by
eating up as much as 70 percent of revenue.

At least one popular online radio service — Pandora Media of Oakland,
Calif., which derives much of its revenue from advertising — said the
new agreement will help ensure its survival.

"For us, it's hard to overstate how significant this is," said Pandora
founder Tim Westergren. "It was either this or an ugly alternative."

The revenue-sharing deal announced Tuesday is between SoundExchange, a
nonprofit that collects royalties for recording copyright owners from
digital radio services, and three smaller webcasters: radioIO, Digitally
Imported and AccuRadio.

Westergren said Pandora plans to sign on to the new royalty terms too.
And Jonathan Potter, executive director of the Digital Media
Association, which represents webcasters and other online media
companies, predicted some of the association's other members will also
join the deal.

Under the agreement, large commercial webcasters will pay copyright
owners up to 25 percent of their revenue or a "per-performance" rate
that is below the rates set by the Copyright Royalty Board. Smaller
webcasters will pay either a percent of revenue or a percent of
expenses.

In a statement, SoundExchange executive director John Simson said the
deal will give webcasters a chance to "flesh out various business
models" and give artists and other copyright holders the opportunity to
"share in the success their recordings generate."

Lawmakers also praised the agreement. Congress has already passed
legislation making any deal reached between webcasters and SoundExchange
legally binding. Because Internet radio companies operate under a
government license, these deals need congressional authorization.

Already this year, SoundExchange struck new online royalty agreements
with the National Association of Broadcasters and the Corporation for
Public Broadcasting.

Traditional AM and FM broadcasters are exempt from copyright royalty
rates for over-the-air radio play, because that airplay is thought to
provide free promotion for artists and labels. But the broadcasters are
subject to the new rates for any songs streamed over radio station Web
sites.

Re: [slim] DSBridge - A simpler way to stream Spotify

2009-07-07 Thread chp

*stumble*, dsbridge.ini is a textfile with a list of options that can be
changed. Open it in notepad and take a look. The format is as follows:

[executable name]
option=value

So for example if you want to change the MP3 encoding bitrate for
Spotify, you do this:

[SPOTIFY.EXE]
MP3BitRate=256

Which would configure it to encode with 256kbps quality. The file in
the bin-package contains sensible defaults for both Spotify and iTunes.

I love dBpowerAmp and that is what I re-ripped my whole collection to
FLAC with. I wish they had better prices on their hardware (they have a
really cool Rip Server) and I wish they supported something besides
Windows. But I guess that is why they made WINE!

Which relates to a questioned I posed as a thread starter recently. "Is
the Squeezebox overpriced?"

Computer hardware can make audio boxes look very expensive and "HiFi"
boxes ridiculously so.

The computer industry will produce very cheaply the hardware for moving
data round the house, the music industry sells cheaply DACs and
amplification. What's left for the trad HiFi manufacturers? Domestically
acceptable loudspeakers.

It's wake up time.

Re: [slim] Ultimate server for SqueezeCenter?

2009-07-07 Thread matthijskoopmans

I would add the following:

1. some way of editing tags after ripping, this would have to be
remotely via a web interface.
2. MusicBrainz integration for tags (FreeDB is dreadful)
3. MusicIP installed, and configurable via web interface to analyse the
library
4. web interface to "upload" files to the vortexbox. This is more than
just a file drop, it will invoke a rescan of the music library as well.
5. after ripping the CD, the album art is retrieved and added to the
folder. (my preference would be to embed the album art in the tag, but
that makes maintenance more difficult - squeezecenter "find album art"
works with the cover.jpg in the directory, and does not update embedded
art)
