It depends on the format in which you are sending the files across the
network. Under SC Settings > Advanced > File types you can choose, for
example, to have Apple Lossless (ALAC) transcoded to MP3, FLAC or WAV.
Those three choices will chew up network bandwidth in increasing order
of severity. The SB players do not support ALAC directly, so some
transcoding needs to be done on the server, and that choice determines
the bandwith requirements. I think the same is true for WMA Lossless,
but I'm not sure as I don't follow those developments closely. A
compressed format like FLAC will generally be less demanding of
bandwidth than an uncompressed format like WAV or AIFF.

[slim] Help with tune to URL needing authentication

2009-07-19 Thread adorfmann

I am trying to tune in to a new subscription radio station (MojaRadio)
that requires authentication. I am trying to come up with the correct
syntax using the HTTP basic auth but it is not working. My UID is an
email address and the URL itself has a colon within it. I suspect that
the syntax won't translate correctly. The URL for the station is:

liveDOTstre3mDOTcom:/secureDOTm3u

So the basic auth statement may be confusing SC. It looks like this:

"myn...@comcastdotnet:passw...@livedotstre3mdotcom:/secure.m3u"

Any help much appreciated!

Andy

Re: [slim] Rebuffering is ruining the Squeezebox experience

2009-07-19 Thread GeeJay

Well, instant karma got me

After my bold claims that my rebuffering problems were fixed, they've
started again. Back to square one

BTW, I'm running SC on an XP machine with plenty of RAM and a
reasonably fast chip...certainly enough horsepower to do the job. I'm
now thinking the issue may be the connection between my router and the
host PC. They're not in the same room, and the layout of the house is
such that the only way I can get a reliable connection is through
powerline adapters. That connection may not be "reliable" enough for
streaming FLAC, however.

Re: [slim] Network demands: flac, wmp, mp3, etc.

2009-07-19 Thread maggior

It depends on the bitrate. A typical FLAC file as I've seen in my
collection is between 700 and 1000 kbps. mp3 - it depends on what
bitrate you chose for the compression, e.g. a 128kpbs mp3 file will
require 128kbps of bandwith to play with no issues.

In reality you'll need a little more bandwith to allow for transport
overhead - assume 20 or 30% required extra bandwidth as a ballpark
figure.

This is the bandwidth required for each player. The server would have
to support the sum of the bandwidth of any players playing at the same
time. With a wired connection of 100Mbps, this generally isn't an
issue. If your server is connected via wireless, then it could be an
issue.

I hope that helps.

[slim] Network demands: flac, wmp, mp3, etc.

2009-07-19 Thread RonM

I see in another thread that there has been some suggestion that flac
files have the potential of making unseemly network demands under some
circumstances (like restricted network capacity). I'm not sure if this
is something specific to flac, or if "flac" is being used as a stand-in
for all lossless formats.

What are the actual relative bandwidth requirements of flac vs wma
lossless vs mp3 lossless? I'd have thought they'd be pretty much the
same.

Re: [slim] Ultimate server for SqueezeCenter?

2009-07-19 Thread MrSinatra

hi,

i have spent some time on your website, but i'm still a bit confused.

it seems people could simply use your software for free, and not buy
anything from you, right? and if they do buy from you, the price is
fairly low for the hardware you sell, so i wonder how you make enough
money? are there enough people out there who simply want a SC/NAS 1TB
premade system? basically an infrant on steroids without the price
tag?

don't feel a need to answer all that, but it leads to my next question
which is what are you looking to enhance primarily? software or
hardware?

(also, u might want to tell people that they need to turn the "iso"
into a vortexbox CD, and how to do that. some folks wouldn't be up to
snuff on it)

we have an infrant 1100 rack model at work, and it has many features as
well as SC built in. can your entire system be managed via web
interface? can someone set it up to act as a ftp server via that
interface? (as a for instance) what about ddns support? you might
want to also display the IP + port number for SC access.

updating by merely feeding the system a file would be nice, instead of
the commands that would be beyond some folks.

more below:

silent is always best. :) still, some folks might like the lil
computer speaker, if it has one, to beep or something when a CD is done,
in case they aren't staring at it. even better, say something with a
distinctive tone.

agillis;438570 Wrote:

i'd imagine some people would be. give it a usb port for usb CD
drives. i can see running something small in cars and such. if mobile,
no moving parts that were very affixed would be crucial.

seems to be more and more relevant these days. at such low wattage, do
i dare broach the idea of a laptop battery charged off of solar power?

i think a lot of people would like more storage. i currently only do
mp3 at 256kbps and i have ~300gigs of music. i won't go to FLAC until i
figure out what my home NAS system is going to be, and your product (the
software anyway), is definitely on my mind.

however, i would want a full media server, meaning it would have to do
video, pictures, etc as well and work reliably with whatever client
appliances i have.

i also MUST have RAID functionality.

i have some of the same concerns as earlier posters, so i won't repeat
them, but i would like the ability to choose what formats to rip, and
also have new rips in a "staging" area that i could check out before
manually putting them into what i consider the proper archived place.
thats a must as well.

Re: [slim] Should I buy an iPhone?

2009-07-19 Thread heidtheba

I have recently bought an iPhone, which serves very well as a Squeezebox
controller (using iPeng app) as well as of course promises to be a very
nice MP3 player.

I would really love to hone an easily automated way of syncing my
Squeezecenter library with one which I can carry with me on the iPhone.
Having half of my large music collection as FLAC files means I can't use
iTunes to sync these. The answer seemed to lie in Mediamonkey Gold-
which can autoconvert FLAC, Ogg, etc and high-bitrate music files to
lower bitrate MP3 files which are better suited to syncing with the
iPhone. I much preferred Mediamonkey's library management also, it just
seemed to work better with the tags I create in mp3tag for the
Squeezecenter library.
I use trackstat to rate my music in Squeezecenter- I tried and failed
to have an automated way of e.g. taking this rating and applying it as a
rating within Mediamonkey (via a script). This would allow me to only
sync those tracks to the iPhone which I originally rated on
Squeezecenter. I was able to do this manually by using Trackstat Export,
to export the e.g. 4star rated files as a playlist, and import this
playlist into Mediamonkey, then rate everything in it with 4 stars.
Then came the bombshell that the new iPhone firmware upgrade crashes
Mediamonkey. Now I am forced to using iTunes again, and will have to
explore the option of creating a separate lower bitrate MP3 library for
syncing with the iPhone. This gets me nowhere nearer a solution for
automating ratings transfers from trackstat, so that rated playlists can
be automatically synced to the iPhone (to save space with no duff
tracks), and be up-to-date with all recently rated tracks.

I have given up on the idea of syncing "number of plays" between
trackstat and itunes/mediamonkey.

Would be interesting to see how others deal with syncing recently rated
tracks.

There's only one other person in this thread who has experienced
anything like the same problem problem (maggior). You've got to wonder
if he is running the app of something as feeble as a Netgear Duo
Readynas too.

I found that going from wireless to wired improved things somewhat
(less rebuffering), which is why I now keep my SB3 tethered. I found
that if I turned the microwave on (or sent negative vibes to anyone,
etc.), wireless mode would be interrupted. Another advantage of the
wired method is that the unit is much more responsive.

Following some of the previous posts, I tried the network test. It
showed a continuous 100% at the highest transfer rate. I do find that
7.3.3 is better about rebuffering than the previous version (though that
might be attributable to the ethernet connection). It doesn't happen
very often, but when it does, it's a pain in the @ss. Resetting the
unit doesn't fix it. I'd rather not reinstall the system software for
my Readynas if I can avoid it - especially when the benefits of doing so
are uncertain. I plan at this point to remove the few resident programs
that are running on the NAS and see if that helps. If the rebuffering
continues, I'll be reinstalling 7.2.1 once again.

I'd be interested to know what changed about the Squeezecenter software
after 7.2.1 to make rebuffering such a problem for so many people.

"button browse; button now_playing" did the trick. Thanks!

I'll fool around with the itunes plugin logging when I get a chance,

something I expect to be doing on a regular basis.

I do have an Italian (don't know which network) iPhone 3G (not 3GS),
was the top model when I bought it a year ago, sold at around 700€ (so
the 1.000$ probably fit) and works with all German networks.

€700 sounds hefty but I figured the different price of T-Mobile's
iPhone plan compared to the one I have is around 1.200€ (over 24 months)
so it pays and I don't have to switch.

At least T-Mobile will unlock their $200 Android phones after 90

Pippin, thanks for the info & perspective. My experience with a

Thanks for the tip re purchasing in France or Italy. I suppose I ought
to invest some $$$ now in FXE in anticipation of making this purchase a
year or two down the road.

Streaming: I asked this question when the Jive was in development...and
the answer still isn't intuitively obvious to me:

For a handheld device like the iThing, I assume that I won't be able to
discern much of a audio difference on play-back between lossless and
lossy content. I also assume that using the iThing's CoreAudio stuff to
decode MP3 audio is easier to implement than a port of libflac. So,
given those two assumptions, what's the trade-off for making streaming
playback work on the iThing? Server-side transcoding to MP3 with iPeng
connecting as http://scip:9000/stream.mp3 like any other mp3 player? Or
make iPeng into some kind of a stripped-down SqueezePlay client capable
of receiving a flac stream and decoding it? Which is more likely to
drain the battery faster? Higher bandwith requirements for the flac
stream but lower cpu utilization for decoding? (That's flac's big
strength, right?) Or lower bandwidth requirements to receive the MP3
stream but higher cpu utilization to decode it?

Or am I working with faulty assumptions here?

Don't know to much about EU networks, but here in the States, I like my
iPhone. Works great as a phone, iPod, mobile browser, and with iPeng it
is a great addition to Squeezeboxing.

As for having iTunes because of the iPhone, I keep two separate
libraries on separate drives. I rip to FLAC on my main server and then
use the converter in dBpowerAmp to convert to 256 MP3 the songs I want
to put on my iPhone. Really no need to convert them all in my case as
6TB of FLAC will not fit on an iPhone even when converted to the
lossiest MP3. So I only convert favorites and then spot convert when I
want something different on the iPhone. I turn off all tagging and art
work searching in iTunes so that iTunes can't hose my tags, artwork and
library. Another approach for somebody just starting is to use Vortexbox
as it rips a FLAC copy and an MP3 copy automatically.

So I say go for the iPhone if you need a new phone and want to also
control Squeezeboxes!

[slim] Smiling - local Clearchannel stations AVAILABLE on RadioTime

Maybe this is old news, but I was glad to see that our local
Clearchannel AM stations are available on RadioTime. There are huge
powerlines between me and the transmitters - I get nothing but static on
AM radio. We're back on the air, and I'm loving it.

Re: [slim] Should I buy an iPhone?

2009-07-19 Thread garym

Go for it. I use several IPODS and we have two iphones. Iphone works
nicely for all the uses you have requested (and is a fantastic
controller for squeezeboxes if you use Pippin's IPENG application). I
keep a FLAC version of files for use with SC at home and a mirror image
of mp3 files within itunes. In itunes, you should "uncheck" the option
"allow itunes to manage library". This way it won't reorganize any of
your files. In my case I don't care that it reorganizes, because it uses
the same strategy I do (artist/album/song or compilations/album/song).
Itunes doesn't modify my mp3 tags at all unless I edit/change tag data
using itunes (which I don't). Itunes will add a "soundcheck" value to
each file when added to the library for use in its own version of
replaygain. This information is added as an additional comment tag
(COMMENT ITUNNORM). It doesn't modify your other comment tag if it
exists and won't modify your replaygain tags if you have those. And I
believe as long as USE SOUNDCHECK is turned OFF when you add the files
to your itunes library it won't even do this (although the soundcheck
value is useful with the IPOD for volume normalization--I use mp3tag to
convert the replaygain album gain values into soundcheck values used by
ITUNES, but this is another conversation). If you are really paranoid,
simply select all your mp3 files and "write protect" them before adding
to ITUNES library. This way itunes can't do anything to the files.

Keep in mind that most of what ITUNES does is in its own library. It
creates a library database when it originally imports the files (using
info from the tags), but the ipod/iphone and itunes is using it's
library information from then on.

I have no trouble keeping the two library's organized and synchronized
(FLAC and mp3) and I have over 100,000 files. I can't speak to all
comments, but in my opinion most of the complaints about ITUNES
"messing" with things seem to be caused by the USER not understanding
how to use itunes and set the appropriate options. Itunes is not evil.
Just a software program. I use dbpoweramp for ripping and converting
from FLAC to mp3. I use mp3tag for certain things dbpoweramp can't do. I
use foobar2000 for playing files on my computer itself. I use
SqueezeCenter for feeding my numerous Squeezeboxes, and I use
IPODs/IPhones for music on the go. Bottom line: I'm meticulous about my
file organization, tags, etc. and Itunes used properly has not caused a
single problem for me.

[slim] Should I buy an iPhone?

2009-07-19 Thread Hercules

It's about time I got a new phone. I'm trying to decide whether to get
an iPhone and would appreciate your thoughts on the iPhone, as well as
on my situation. Thank you!

My requirements are for a device that:
- acts as both a phone and an mp3 player (thereby replacing my current
Sony K800i phone and Cowon iAudio 7 mp3 player)
- will work well with my private Gmail (but won't need to use my work
email)
- has a reasonably good GPS that I would be able to use for getting
around (including while cycling on-road and off-road)
- is a fun gadget :-)

My primary concern is whether the use of iTunes will have a detrimental
on my well-structured and time-consumingly-tagged music library. I
accept that I will need to create a second mirrored music library in mp3
format (as the majority of my music is currently FLAC). I'm concerned
that iTunes will start messing around with my music files (i.e.
restructure them, change tags, etc.). While in theory that shouldn't be
an issue - as it will be a "disposable" copy library that could be
easily recreated - I'd guess that a library that is prone to being
reorganised by iTunes would be difficult to synchronise with the main
library. I'd prefer to use another application to iTunes but recognise
that iTunes has broader benefits that will make it worth using. And
maybe I'm being paranoid about iTunes :-)

I'd appreciate any thoughts from those of you who have been through
similar decisions, as well as general comments on the pros and cons of
the iPhone itself. I have to admit the iPhone does look cool and I am
tempted:-)

Re: [slim] Connect MacMini direct to a SB3

2009-07-19 Thread Kiwi

to reaffirm and add to what has already been posted;

You will need to manually set the IP address on both the Mac Mini and
the SB3.
You can use a standard Ethernet cable as both devices have the
capability to automatically determine whether to function straight
through or crossover.

You will not be able to connect to Internet streams or SqueezeNetwork
unless you are using the wireless function of either device to connect
to the Internet.

Re: [slim] Softsqueeze skipping at start of track

2009-07-19 Thread bpa

Probably. Syncing with soft players is never as good as hardware players
as the software player has no control over the type of audio hardware,
drivers or audio effects enabled - all of which can affect time taken to
sync.

So Softsqueeze may be discarding a few packets while trying to get
audio synced.
