[slim] Redesigned Logitech web site
Bit of a warning really: the home page now has a massive Flash interface - it's all very pretty but not very swift to get round. The interface is inconsistent as well: some pages have pop-up product descriptions and others change the view entirely to the high-lighted product. Some views scroll from side-to-side, and others are static or require you to click on arrows at the side to change to sub-pages. When you actually get to the Squeezebox page (sorry WiFi Music Players), you need to scroll a long way to the right to get to see all products. You can narrow the view, but the options for doing this are a little odd: show all products which are Mac compatible? Linux compatible? Funny, I don't see any hiding themselves! I just get the feeling this is not going to display on my phone. Oh, and the developers have left an obvious bug for IE8 users (but not Firefox) - not that I've tested anything else - the Support drop-down menu at the top of the page doesn't work: the two menu options (Product Support / Contact Us) are permanently displayed in the same location as the word "Support". Not quite a triumph then. Separate note: I want the Radio! Now! In red, preferably. Re: [slim] Still Necessary To Delete Preference Panes On New SqueezeCenter Software Install?
Yesterday I installed Snow Leopard and Squeeze 7.3.4. Before doing anything, I copied (my user name)/Library/Application Support/SqueezeCenter Folder to a Flash Drive. I then installed SL and 7.3.4. When the clean install of 7.3.4 finished, I stopped the Squeeze server. I then opened the above SqueezeCenter Folder on my Flash Drive and found the file "server.prefs". I moved this file to the new SqueezeCenter Folder on my computer and did a "replace". I then started the server. Success! All my settings for all 4 devices made it! Everything works great and no more tedious resetting of all my preferences. Existing products that are working well now, will very likely continue to do so in the future (unless your immediate neighbors install _new_ wireless access points that start to cause interference with yours). My argument has been that in densely populated locations, there is a risk of running out of WiFi channels to use (there are only 3 such channels that don't overlap). If this is not a problem for you now, don't worry about it! However, if you start to see unreliable streaming, one possible cause is having nearby neighbors that use the same WiFi channel as you do. Re: [slim] Squeezebox can only connect to wireless channel 1
the router was on channel 1, where everything worked fine, except my laptop which frequently lost connection. As another remote network is broadcasting on same channel 1 (I live in a city), I decided to move to channel 6, where I could not see other radio activity. So I changed the settings in the router to channel 6, did a factory reset in the SB3 (as suggested in this threat) and tried to re-connect...without success. The SB3 keeps looking for a radio signal and times out after 30 seconds. No success for another try. I have not yet sniffed radio signals while the SB3 is looking for connection yet, as suggested in this threat; I will do that to see what is going on. funny thing is that when I repeat the whole procedure and change back to radio setting 1 I get inmediate connection. I am in Europe, my modem is on Europe settings, as is my SB3. I use IEEE 802.11g standard (=2.4GHz) with WPA2 encryption. The thing with European WiFi radio signals is that the radio channels do partly overlap; so you need at least 4 channels between two adjacent settings to get the least radio interference. see "http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:2.4_GHz_Wi-Fi_channels_(802.11b,g_WLAN).png -- history -- 1 SB3 + DACMagic + Rotel + Transmission line speakers 1 Boom 1 MSI Barebone AXIS VIA C7 1.5GHz with FreeNAS + SlimNAS history's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=29747 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=67854 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

I'm trying to figure out a way to control Spotify from my living room. Is it possible to control the PC with a PS3? I have tried something called teamviewer on my laptop earlier. This application made it possible to control my stationary Slim Server PC with my laptop, and thus control Spotify in my living room. The problem is that I don't want to have my laptop up and running in the living room. What if you could use an application like teamviewer on the PS3? This would be a neat solution. a long time ago there was a thread here in the forums that debated wireless vs wired and some sage person simply said- whenever possible use a wired connection. I think that advice still holds true. I'm all for advancing wireless technology and wireless n sounds great as long as all of your hardware is updated, all of your firmware is updated, your router is n compatible and you're operating on the 5ghz band and not 2.5 ghz. as long as you have that going for you, n is marvelous. -- exile exile's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=4579 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=67882 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

Re: [slim] 802.11n technology
The whole thing comes down to this - upgrades to wireless will require: a. All new firmware. (That stuff is not in the public domain so there is no linux wizz kid hacking it) b. An all new wireless receiver - no doubt not an off the shelf part and in all probability a proprietary bus connector and card connector. c. New router hardware for anyone with a draft n router that is not compatible. You want to do all that to carry a stream that will fit in 802.11b bandwidth with room to spare. -- tedfroop "Good judgement is the result of experience ... Just put a sticker on the box saying "Compatible with N-class wireless networks" Which is true, just like any other G-class device out there. 99% of people won't know or care that it isn't actually a N-class device. Probably because things aren't that simple, especially for the older IP3K players. Ubicom would need to release a drop in replacement for the G wireless card in the SB3 (for example) and issue updated software for the IP3K processor to handle it. Logitech would then need to include this in the firmware. Then you have two questions: 1. Is there enough space in the firmware for the new drivers? 2. If there is, can both sets of software live side by side? Introducing new technology to a mature line like this is no trivial task. Then you have the new players which I would presume have embedded wireless hardware as opposed to add on cards. This will not be somethign that can be changed. Yes there is far more possibility for Touch and Radio to support new wireless hardware as they are littel linux systems and far more flexible. But I suspect support would become a complete nightmare. -- funkstar my collection: *1*x squeezebox radio *1*x squeezebox touch *1*x squeezebox boom *2*x controller, *1*x receiver *2*x sb3 (sliver/black), *1*x sb2 wired (silver) *1*x sb (black), *1*x slimp3 (with rear shield) interested in any others if you have them! funkstar's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=2335 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=67882 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

i don't think its insignificant to point out that being able to set your router to "N only" has security benefits. if you live in a crowded wifi place and your neighbors kid is hacking left and right but doesn't have or can't afford a N device, thats only to your benefit, performance issues aside. i just don't understand why logitech wouldn't move to N on all products and make them user upgradeable. hell, make it something i can ONLY buy from logitech, its future revenue and i'd buy upgrades as needed. -- MrSinatra www.lion-radio.org using: sb2 & sbc (my home) / sbr (parent's home) - w/sc 7.3.4b - win xp pro sp3 ie8 - 3.2ghz / 2gig ram - 1tb wd usb2 raid1 - d-link dir-655 MrSinatra's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=2336 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=67882 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

The cost is not that significant, and what is at issue is a strategic market decision. So long as G routers/APs continue to be sold and have a greater than trivial presence in homes (and if N routers continue to be G+N), it would be a mistake to make a product that doesn't work with G. Maybe dual standard cards might be used at a future date? There are many Wifi component suppliers, high-ish part prices don't last long in such markets. Both N class client devices and N class infrastructure devices are are backwards compatible with other G equipment. Sure they are, but Logitech is a commercial company. If the competition offers N consumers will start to make buying decisions influenced by the lack of N. G will soon get the 'old technology' badge. It would be a very bad decision commercially NOT to switch to N. Even with existing users. I don't think I'll buy myself a 'touch' even though they seem nice, but if they had N that would be one more reason for me to buy one. Re: [slim] Many of my artist doesn't sort correctly
Squeeze center has a setting for the "small word" sorting. I don't remeber if's defaulted to ignore "The" when sorting. You can have it either way and even fill up with other words you want to exlude The, Los .. and whatnot . Also check artist sort tags , you can affect sorting by the tags. Example "Andreas Vollenweider" i got some from a friend with an artistsort tag =Vollenweider,Andreas My own albums did not have this tag . -- Mnyb No it can NOT be controlled with iTunes Mnyb's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=4143 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=68254 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss
[slim] Many of my artist doesn't sort correctly
Some statistics: 8350 songs, 637 Artists, 200 Albums Just recently I noticed that my a Artsit doesn't sort alphabeticly. Most of then (75%) sort correctly, but some (25%) doesn't, the "unsorted" are found after the letter V, they are sorted correctly from there, then they are followed by the Z-artists. like this a-v (correct order) a-v (Almost correct order does take small words (the etc) into sorting) x-z (correct order) Is there a limit in number of artist? i checked the Tags and I can't see a difference between the correct and faulty artists. I made a full rescan with the same result. Re: [slim] How I may speed-up the digitalization of my CDs?
Also learned by experience always rip lossles (otherwise you will do it again later ) fix all tags and cover art while at it, don' t rip and adjust weird tagging "later" you will make a mess. My approach while ripping was : rip a bunch of CD's fix all taggs plunk them into your "music" directory/disc.. let squeezecenter scan, check if everything looks and sort ok on the screen if not adjust tags scan again. Then put today's work on the backup disc. And don't put all files in the same dir use some intelligent schema like artist/album/track1...n . I have a long distance extra backup I p2p (skype) to a friend 600km from me. This get done with 2 weeks interval. Re: [slim] How to stream Spotify on a Mac
VLC is a Swiss army knife application - a huge number of options and can do lots of wonderful stream transformation but it is often not easy to get it do what is wanted. I have spent many hours with it and still only use a small number of options. That said - I believe the VLC advice offered in the linked page will work as is. You need an enthusiastic OSX user to help tease out the details as the solution will be OSX specific. The main cause of the problem is Spotify themselves and I think Logitech hands are tied by Spotify. The only API Spotify provide is a single client on an x86 linux based system (supplied as binary) and the user must be a Premium user. This won't work in the SC context. The Despotify group showed it was possible to have a better/more general API but I think Spotify are trying to get their business model sorted before opening up the system. The iPhone app shows they are bending under pressure so maybe there is hope for Logitech. For me it is an academic exercise since Spotify is not offered in Ireland (and many other countries) except as a Premium services. -- bpa bpa's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=1806 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=67680 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss
