[slim] How do I go back to a previous version?

2009-10-01 Thread akjohnson

Having upgraded to v7.4 (& firmware v130) I would love to be able to
rollback to the previous version so that my remote and screen saver will
work. Is there any way of doing this?
Are the earlier versions of Squeezecentre available anywhere?

Thanks for any advice.

Peng still works with SC 7.3.x And I believe it's a worthwhile update
for 7.3 users, too.
The context menus will not work as well with 7.3 as with 7.4 because
there's a lot of functionality that's not yet there in 7.3 but that's
new 7.4 functionality anyway and I have also spent considerable effort
to get 7.3 as close as possible.
Also, the Music Services will still be under "Radios" and not under
"Apps" obviously and lack the new functionality you can get there
(especially context menus, again). You also only can put them on the
main menu with 7.4.

So if you don't feel like going to 7.4 take your time. 7.4 does have
some teething problems, although I believe it will eventually be
worthwhile and some of these are not as bas with iPeng as without (iPeng
_does_ have TrackInfo on NowPlaying and the current playlist also with
7.4 although some menu entries do not work correctly and it's a bit more
easy to switch between SBS and MySB.

1. good find! Could you file a ticket for this so that I not forget to
fix it?
https://trac.penguinlovesmusic.de/trac/ipengnat/

2. Yes, well, that's how D'n'D on iPhone is... It's a bit hard to do
with only "touch" as a control...
You can also sync by selecting the players you want to sync and
pressing the "sync" button on the lower toolbar.

3. This is strange and should not be. I also haven't seen that. Are you
sure they are still synced?
Sometimes it can take a short while until server feedback about
sync/mode actions (move means: to another server) comes in ans therefore
there can be a jumping back and forth but it should eventually do as
commanded.

4. rearranging players is not purely accidental but let's say it's not
an advertised feature because there are quite a lot of situations where
it will not work (the sort order will change on it's own, that is).
It's extremely ahrd to get around that because what I see is that the
server sometimes sporadically "forgets" about a player and brings it
back later and you have to react to that because it could well have
been a change through a different interface.
You could also file a ticket on the "rearrange to first place" thing
and I'll investigate but right now I am not sure whether I maybe
intentionally ignored the lack because you can still move the first item
to second place.

Actually that's something where I tried to get my head around recently
(although for players, not tracks). Would a logic to mark several items
and move them together if you move one of them be somehow intuitive?
That would make for a great ticket then :D

Rest;464105 Wrote:

Well, if you ask like _that_ I can't give you an answer.
iPeng still supports it and it works better than in 1.1.2 yet I have
never had any issues with this feature, it works fine with my controller
as well.
So if people are experiencing issues I believe it's either
a) they lost/changed their library settings and don't have a music
library set anymore (but use only iTunes or MusicIP integration)
b) there is some kind of issue with 7.4 and music folder browsing that
I never encountered.

I can't promise anything on b) :D

You won't find that in "What's new", it's been around since 1.0 :D

If that's done, you can add it here:

[slim] Command line access to SqueezeBox reveicer?

2009-10-01 Thread Innocence

I'd like to give my Windows always-on-music-server PC unattended control
of my SqueezeBox reveicer, ie. query to see if the receiver is idle, and
if so switch it to SqueezeNetwork/mySqueezeBox.com and power off the
receiver.

I read the help file about the CLI, but while it lists all the commands
it doesn't actually tell you HOW to send/execute the commands on the
receiver.

Ideally I was hoping for a simple SqueezeBox command line tool
(SBcom.exe?), so I could use it in batch scripts like this:

Code:

SBcom.exe query idle
  IF ERRORLEVEL 1 GOTO NotIdle
ECHO SqueezeBox reveicer idle - switching it to mysqueezebox.com and powering
off>>%log%
  SBcom.exe connect mysqueezebox.com
  SBcom.exe power off

Running SqueezeCenter/SqueezeBox Server 7.4 on a Windows XP.

(I know there are SqueezeBox Server plugins which can do almost the
same thing, but I'd much prefer to let my server scripts handle this :))

Hi,

what do you call "the Box" ?

If SB Server on your PC is updated to 7.4, the FW of all connected
Players will be updated immediately, so 130 should be on you SB3. I did
it yesterday, and update from 127 to 130 worked fast and without any
problem.

Even on 7.4 beta this worked fine a few weeks ago, but I uninstalled it
to wait for 7.4 final because on the beta I missed the automatical
import of my webradio favorites, and went down to 7.3.3 final again. FW
downgrade to 127 was done immediately after install of 7.3.3.

So FW up- and downgrade seems to work flawlessly ...

1. #127

2. What happens is that I pick a player and drops it below another
player header and above the other player name. (Can't provide a
screenshot right now). The interface moves the header and player name
apart but when I make the drop it returns to the previous position.

3. The interface show them as two separate players. If I select one of
them and hit pause or next track, etc both reacts. I'll try to describe
it step by step later.

4. I see that the "lost" player screws up the order. Can't iPeng keep
the previous order until it's rearranged again? When the player returns
it gets it's previous position back. If a previously unknown players
turns up add it to the bottom of the list. In other words let iPeng
determine the order all the time and don't care about the order from
SqueezeCenter.

[slim] Two distinct libraries

2009-10-01 Thread alti4

Hi there
I just got my Duet two days ago and until now, I really love it. Setup
together with a QNAP-TS109 went smoothly and everything works fine.
However, still some questions remain open. The most important at the
moment is the following: I live together with my girlfriend and we have
completely different music tastes (don't worry, we have other things in
common...;-)). But all our albums are of course in the same folder on
the server and thus also when we scroll through our library with the
controller, all albums from the two of us appear. Now my question: Is
there a way to have two distinct libraries, so that when I look at it
only my albums appear and the same for my girlfriend. Of course, I can
make two playlists, but if I do that, I don't have the album or artist
structure anymore.

Any ideas? Thanks in advance!

This is the second post of yours in threads I've read today belittling
junior members. What, prey, gives you the right to go round the various
threads handing out these putdowns.

I have personally received some very good advice from so called junior
members. Your post count isn't that great, and if it consists of posts
like these it goes to prove that quantity isn't always the same as
quality.

I own a Transporter, Duet and 3 Booms - my bad. I don't work for a
competitor. I know a little about software design - MS.

IMO, the fact that each of these products must be updated at the same
time is not a good design - convenient for Logitech perhaps but not a
good design. I also own a few products by OPPO Digital. They offer
software updates. They are not perfect but their software process is a
few notches above what I see here. They also have an active community
but actually don't need it as much.

Congratulations on your social promotion to Senior status.

1. Thanks!
2. And it doesn't move back into the group after a few moments? What
kind of player is this?
3. Can you reproduce this? Or did it only happen once? Do they still
show up separately when you restart iPeng?
4. No, it's not that easy. iPeng gets the necessary data from the
server through two different channels:
- serverstatus. This gives you the number ans IDs of the players
- player status. This contains the sync state.
The problem is that it can take several seconds until the new player
status comes in. So iPeng first assumes that whatever action you did was
successful and changes that proposition when a new player status with a
different sync state comes in. Maybe that's where something went wrong.
First separating them again is a bad idea because it confuses users
(they will think the sync failed; this still can happen when a regular
player status comes in at the wrong time) and try to sync again.
The position problem is that server status sometimes seems to "lose" a
player, iPeng then removes it and brings it back when the next player
status comes in showing that the player is still there.

Sync management is still not perfect in SBS and iPeng has to work
around that a bit.

2. I'll try to reproduce this.

3. I'll try to reproduce this.

4. I don't know if we're talking about the same thing. I'm talking
about individual player rearrangement and not when syncing players. i.e.
what order the players appear in the list. If we bring syncing into it I
guess unsyncing either could bring the player back to where in the list
is was before or put it at the bottom like when a new player appear.

start -> sort  -> sync -> new-> unsync  ->
A B C -> A C B -> C BA -> C BA D -> A C B D ->

which is why i have said for years you need to develop and sell an all
in one product, ie. it has SC and a client in one box.

and moreovr, i just looked at the new homepage and "animated" helper,
and its STILL isn't made clear what you just said above.

a chart showing what the environment requirements are for each scenario
SHOULD BE MADE. ie. if you want a duet, and you want local music, you
need a computer wired to a router running SC. if you just want net
music, you don't need SC and the computer. that kind of thing.

Your Boom will connect back to 7.3.3 just fine, only every time you
switch from SC to MySB, or from MySB to SC, your Boom will update it's
FW again.

Indeed. Now compare what services & features & functions are on those
standalone internet only radios vs the Boom.

If you are using your Boom for internet only SN/MySB connections (and
I'd bet many do) then your FW updates would be rare.

I've never had a "bricked" unit with four different SB players going
back several years. I'm sure it has happened, somewhere-somehow, but I
think this would be a very rare instance.

In the last two years SB/Logitech has probably doubled the amount of
Music Services it offers, to say nothing of other features and
enhancements they have added. Most of these additions require a FW
Update to the players so the players can communicate and function with
newly added services and features.

Hold the left arrow button until the device setup menu shows up. Go
to current settings and a list of 15+ settings show up. Look for one
called 'auto upgrade'.

Sorry, but I think that would be really nuts. The SB Touch is already
much bigger and unwieldy than that "other Touch" (hint: Apple) BEFORE
adding a battery pack. And the extra bulk is because of all kinds of
things that are completely irrelevant to using it as a remote, such as
ethernet jack, optical outputs, RCA outputs, processor and RAM powerful
enough to run TinySC, etc. It's just not designed to be a remote, or at
least not a portable remote. However as a stationary remote to control
other SBs (or itself) it's great.

For me it is not an issue as I do not go to the site and I think some
people will like it and others will not.

But the marketing guys missed the boat on this one. What they should
have done is allowed you to configure the system and then run it by
having simulating the touch or controller. When you pick music, all of
a sudden codebaby girls scantly dressed would appear and start dancing.
Now if they could guarantee that would happen in my house, I would be
clicking away on the shopping cart like a mad man.

Yet as a 3rd party developer I have to say that DotSystem has a point
here.
SD has a habit of breaking a lot of things with new releases and it's
always a huge effort to only keep up with the changes.

And I do have the opinion (and expressed it quite a few times over in
the developer forum) that this has to change because it negates the huge
asset (IMHO) the community development is.

IMHO, any changes to interfaces, internal as well as external should be
deprecated for one release before taking effect so that developers have
time to adapt.

But after all, that's a design decision and we have to be aware of the
price. Look at Microsoft's products. Some of them are barely usable
these days (IE comes to mind) because they carry so much legacy around,
sometimes just making a clean cut has it's advantages, too.

It's clearly set up for the launch of the touch, but Logitech may want
to change her questions in the "Choose which squeezebox is for me"

One of her options is "I want a colorful touch screen to display album

That's too bad, because the average user (i.e. one who doesn't
participate in the forums) won't have a clue that going from version 7.3
to 7.4 will induce such an altered user experience with plugins,

the single most frustrating aspect of the squeeze updates is how they
usually make a wide variety of marvelous plugins inoperable until the
developers of those plugins do us the favor of updating them. this seems
to be a very inefficient and unnecessary workflow strategy.

and from here forward I think we have to hope that newbies to the
product have a lot of patience and somehow can figure out that
slimserver is squeezecenter is mysqueezebox is ??? in 8.0.

The secret combo to update the xilinx FPGA is to hold down power (which

I went back to the last version of 7.3.x after uninstalling 7.4.0. On
loading it immeadiately changed the firmware to the previous version and
all works as it should.

It does now thanks to Mr Parry and you Dean.

I confirmed that all the IR codes used by the Squeezeboxes in our
Harmony database also work with the Boom.

The Squeezebox Boom now has all the additional codes that we provide
for the Squeezebox, v2,v3 and the SLIMP3.

Great point and yes I ran it to the same issue.

Re: [slim] Upgrade killed my SqueezeBox remote

2009-10-01 Thread Shellness

I have upgraded to SC7.4 and my Favorites have disappeared. Am I
supposed to find them in MySqueezebox (this has only my SN Favorites,
not the Folders and Favorites that were in SC7.3) and if so how do they
synchronise to SC.

If the two lots of favourites remain independent have my SC Favorites
been junked and do I have to re-enter them all again. (For what it is
worth I did click on the "No" when invited to delete my logs, etc when
upgrading.)

As a separate point, entering a name in "Music Library Name" in SB
Server Control Panel has no effect on the "My Music" menu. Does this
hint at the same or a different problem, please.

Lastly, I note in the release notes that "Now, when you turn off
Squeezebox Server you'll be prompted to switch to MySqueezebox.com to
continue listening to music". How and when does this happen, I just get
the same "cannot connect to server" on the SB and then everything goes
quiet. (To check my status I have tried looking in "1. Go to
Settings->Home Menu, 2. Scroll down to almost bottom of list, 3. Click
on Switch to mysqueezebox.com" but I get stuck at the first item, what
and where are the Home Menu - I cannot find it in SC Settings nor in
MySqueeze Account Settings.)

Thanks.

Yes, but I don't know if the PIN is still required for older players.
It is not required for Radio and Touch.
That said, both Radio and Touch did show me their respective PIN's when
first connecting.
Any player registered with the old SN *should* be automatically
migrated onto MySB now.

Re: [slim] CodeBaby on new Logitech Squeezebox site

2009-10-01 Thread boerner

I had no idea when I started this thread that it would grow to five
pages...

I guess I was trying to be funny with my topic starter but the more I
think about it, the more the whole CodeBaby thing worries me.

When I first found out about the Slimp3 on slashdot, I wanted one badly
and couldn't afford it. It wasn't until the SB3 came out that I was
finally able to take the plunge. Throughout that time, the
image/perception I had in my head about the company and its founders was
that of people who had an itch to scratch. They scratched it very well
by creating a whole new class of product. You could tell they really put
thought into how it was going to be used as you knew they used it
themselves. You could tell that they had a sense of humor by some of
their press releases. There was heart and soul imbued into their
products.

They might not have head the glitzy marketing campaigns or other
companies, but the simple and easy to use website (how novel, useful
photos and specs of the device on the main product page!) and the
quality of the product sold me and helped me sell others as well.

Over time I am sure Slim wanted to increase sales volumes. The purchase
of Slim by Logitech seemed logical. I was slightly skeptical, but sense
the original team was staying on, I was optimistic that the quality
dedication would continue.

Over time I have seen the Slimdevices.com website slowly acclimated in
the whole Logitech website eco-system and watched its usability go
downhill (again in my opinion). I have read how the original founders
are moving on (again, very understandable).

I am just afraid that the heart of soul of the original small group
that formed Slim Devices has become absorbed by a larger company that
just doesn't "get it", in terms of what made Slim so great from the
beginning.

The new Radio and Touch look great. I am assuming that these products
are the last ones that started their life under the original developers
before Logitech came in (I could be and probably am wrong :-) any one
want to correct me?).

I am worried as to what comes next...will that same impressive
engineering skill and heart and dedication no longer show? I hope I am
wrong. I really do. I am begging Slim/Logitech to prove me so.

It all just reminds me of what happened with the original Palm Pilot.
Jeff Hawkins founded Palm computing with a handful of people and
produced an incredible device. They went on to be bought by U.S.
Robotics, then 3com. Hawkins got tired of being part of the big machine
and left to start Handspring, which again came out with radical new
devices such as the first Treo. I remember watching one of the first
interviews with him in the new Handspring office and it looked like Jeff
and his team were sitting on a couch they picked out of the garbage.

It seemed like he knew he wanted it small, and wanted his hands on the
products to make sure they were great. Well, eventually 3com spun off
Palm, and then Palm bought Handspring. Now, what was once a great and
revolutionary product and company has become almost a joke (yes I had a
Treo and used a Pre).

I just hope the pattern I saw with Palm isn't what is happening to Slim
Devices. But when I see something like CodeBaby trying to sell me
something, my fears start to grow.

Flames, comments, opinions welcome...

As long as you use the same iTunes account that you purchased iPeng
with, it's also safe to "purchase" it again. As soon as you have
confirmed this it will tell you that you have bought the App before and
you can now download it for free.

I've added a comment to your bugzilla. Basically after upgrade remote
wouldn't work, screen display when off was blank instead of showing time
and date and the remote section in Squeezecentre/settings/player
wouldn't load. All of these have been solved on rolling back.

Re: [slim] CodeBaby on new Logitech Squeezebox site

2009-10-01 Thread ModelCitizen

Wake up. It's only about profit. Nowadays marketing is mostly about
conning the public. Sadly the con works on most people. If "heart and
soul" was quantifiable and reliably sold product then Logitech would be
there, but it's not quantifiable and almost impossible to manufacture.

SlimDevices is no more. We are now talking mass market. All mouth
(glossy marketing) no trousers (buggy rushed out product).

Code Baby.

[slim] How to add Playlist as Favorite?

2009-10-01 Thread Club1820

Ok. So I upgraded to 7.4 and sure enough all of my favorites were gone.
Not such a big deal as most of them were radio stations that I was able
to save again easily.

But I also have some SQL Playlists saved as favorites. The playlists
are still there but I dont remember how I was able to save them as
favorites. I tried both through the WEB GUI and Squeezeplay. Couldnt
find anything to save them.

I think (?) I may have saved them through my boombox. I cant test
since I am at work right now. But is there a way to save a currently
playing playlist as a favorite? Either through a player (boom, sb3,
etc) or through the WEB GUI?

Thanks in advance!!

Hi Pippin, i must say it's great to see such interaction between
developer and customers, i'm a recent convert to squeezebox, and a big
part of my decision was driven by ipeng, and the positive reviews and
constant conversation you engage users in.

The update looks great, the icon in particular (good design always
helps!) nice work, can't wait to get home and fire up the squeezebox.

PS. it's available now in the NZ store.
