Actually, I have seen that behavior many times going back to 6.3.

Reseting the box and/or Xilinx has fixed it.

It's hardly new to 7.4, but I've never been able to make it fail in a
reproducable way.

There are numerous threads here about such failures, dating back
years.. I don't think anyone else has been able to reproduce it on
demand.

Being effectively a random occurence makes it a very hard bug to fix
which is why it has been around for years.

I had never observed it. But if that is the case, once the dust settles
(and my friend stop haggling me about it when I was trying to play a new
jazz album I got, him being one of the only CDs are worthy crowd) I
will stop associating the failure with the advent of 7.4. So perhaps it
is a coincidence, and a behavior I shall not see again in years.

I should note I performed a Xilinx and factory reset for the SB3s when
I installed the stable 7.4 release...

My SB world got shaken badly today, that's all.

Xilink reset had to be done sometimes, i think sometimes something goes
wrong with the fw update and you have to reset and sometimes it's a
random occurrence.

Stay tuned to to experience the even rarer distorted sound on full
volume bug .

Murphys law clearly predicts failure in such situations when you try to
show of your stuff for friends ;)

Btw use 7.4.1 and do clean install if possible saves your fragile
nerves if more rants are expected.

The x.x.0 release is always a little buggy just pick up the x.x.1 two
weeks later and all is fine . There must be some kind of law regarding
sw releases the beta and the .1 bug fixed works nicely the release
version don't ?

Amazingly sbs 7.4 did not fail me on my 40th birthday party with 10

All slim/squeeze documentation is outdated, there is no valid manuals

I've always said that it seems more than a little odd the server thinks
that it's streaming and that music is playing, while the player
obviously knows that it isn't. Don't they communicate?? Usually you
see the track progress indicator moving in the web interface, but
nothing on the player.

If this happened on only one of six players, it should be fairly
apparent that it's a player issue and that troubleshooting at the player
level is called for. First you cycle the player's power. If that
doesn't work you do a factory reset.

[slim] Remember playback position

2009-10-18 Thread jaaen

Hi,

I have recently purchased Squeezebox Duet and I am running
SqueezeCenter version is 7.4.0 and using iTunes to feed the music. So,
I have use iTunes activated.

I am listening a lot to podcasts and have enjoyed that you can set the
Remember playback position in iTunes.

However, it seems to be so that Squeezecenter doesn't remember the
playback position.

Is anybody using this feature? And with success?

BTW - small side note: Overall I am impressed by this product and this
forum. If more consumer products would be developed with so close
collaboration with the users - we probably would see very different
products coming out! I have never seen Pioneer have this sort of
contact with their users! Great stuff!

It means that the problem of that station not showing subsequent artist

cannot say. Might be SN/MySB or RadioTime or K92 themselves, dunno.
Have you tried playing their station on your computer direct from their
web site? See if the artist song info changes there. If yes then
it's probably not K92's fault, if no (same problem, artist song info
never changes) then it's K92's fault.

I mispoke about mms issue, where I said:
Says it's 48k MP3 so it's a mms problem which can have metadata
issues
.should say it's NOT a mms problem.

mms streams are WMA encoded and can have issues with Metadata (text
info of artist and song), but K92 is an MP3 encoded stream so the mms
issue should not apply.

[slim] Album art file name

I know that Squeezecenter will look for other file names.
Now i'm trying to add the front.jpg file name to the squeezecenter

When entered here *front.jpg* or *%Filefront.jpg* it won't work,
squeezecenter will not find the art.
Renaming or copying all the front.jpg files will be the last do to
because my other player needs the front.jpg files.

Somebody an idea..

Right now it's available (hex 0xf77a), but only if you've got the
default setting of accepting JVC DVD codes. I expect that's why Harmony
doesn't offer it: it likely maps to some weird JVC DVD button like
Subtitles, and adding it to their Squeezebox database might cause
problems for Harmony customers who actually own JVC DVD players.

Ideally for you, Logitech would add a new Slim Devices code for that
feature; you could file an enhancement request on bugs.slimdevices.com
to add a code to Slim_Devices_Remote.ir (and SqueezePlay source for
Radio and Touch).

Re: [slim] Poll: Do you have a Dual-Band Airport?

2009-10-18 Thread ianr

2GB TC here seems to work pretty well. I got it because I got fed up
with trying to get TimeMachine to work reliably to my NAS/Server (now I
have since figured that out, but the TC is working pretty well, so).

My big complaint is that my bedroom boom rebuffers pretty frequently
especially at night. I think that it is related to competition for
signal (lots of neighbours with wireless), but I've gone as far as to
put my original single band AP into the mix (also apple) using whatever
tech apple uses to extend their networks (WDS I think).

When I tried to add a third AP to the mix (win the wireless war through
superior signal strength), this being an old WRT54G with Tomato, it made
things worse - the boom registered LOWER signal strength.

So, long story short, things seem to work pretty well with the apple
stuff. It isn't as configurable as some other options (I miss
Tomato/DDWRT), but seems more stable overall and has good xfer rates. It
was either apple or build my own AP with an Alix 3D1  running mm0n0wall;
turns out I don't have the time or inclination to fiddle that much these
days.

Sorry if this was a threadjack.

2009-10-18 Thread Pascal Hibon

I have waited until yesterday to upgrade from 7.3.3 to 7.4.1 nightly
build. I must say that I’m very pleased with the result. It is obvious
that Logitech did a lot of work on this release. For sure there were
quite a lot of bugs, but that was to be expected from such a major
change. There is one bug I discovered but I can live with it until the
developers fix it.

One thing that one could say is that Logitech maybe better postponed
the official 7.4.0 release a few weeks. But it is what it is now, and
maybe the early release has put more pressure on the bug fixing process.
I believe there is something positive in everything.

Anyway, I’m liking 7.4.1 a lot.

Re: [slim] I officially declare my HATE for 7.4...

2009-10-18 Thread Mnyb

A larger group of beta testers are needed, sometimes i wonder if I'm
completely alone with my choice of OS and hardware (clarkconnect 4.2 on
mini itx via-epia ).
It is naturally so that bug's slips by when all user cases are not
covered by logitech and/or beta testers.
The full exposure to the whole userbase will flush out more bugs.

slimdevices used to have bug finding events with prices if i remember
correctly.

One idea could be : run a beta version find and report 5 new bugs get a
coffe cup/T-shirt or other trinket, the user reporting most bugs in a
beta software during a specified period gets a Touch ?

Ditto. iPeng rocks!

If Logitech ever decides they need an official app, they would be
silly to do anything other than (attempt) to buy Pippin's work (or hire

[slim] Router Upgrade Questions

2009-10-18 Thread ajkidle

I've got a junky old Linksys 11g router, looking to upgrade. Was hoping
some of the more knowledgeable network gurus here could offer some tips.
Some questions I have:

Is the official ratified 11n spec sufficiently different from the draft
spec, such that we should expect a new wave of official 11n routers?
And when this happens, will it just be marketing hype, or will the
functionality and hardware actually be different?

The motivation for my upgrade is to improve range. Throughput is of
secondary importance. (Squeezebox is my primary application of
wireless, I'll need to buy a few dozen more players before I max out
what 11g can handle.) I've not found much good info for routers with
remarkable or standout range -- any suggestions on this front?

I expect whatever router I buy will be in use for the next several
years, so I don't mind spending a little extra to get a quality product.
Are there brands or models known for being especially high quality,
professional grade, etc.? I like the idea of using DD-WRT on the
Linksys routers, but am worried about the lack of external antennas.

Thanks,
Andy

[slim] 7.4 and Fast-Forward issues - help?

2009-10-18 Thread timequest

Since installing 7.4, I can no longer navigate through a given song
selection via the “fast forward” button. Previously, with all other
software versions, I have been able to fast forward (or “rewind”)
through any of my FLAC files (natively supported by the Duet). With
7.4, I can access the “fast forward” button on the controller only to
navigate at a very slow rate through any given track/song (at only a
slightly increased rate – not much faster than the rate of normal
play).

Any thoughts…suggestions will be appreciated.

Thank you.

[slim] So I'm just not getting this

2009-10-18 Thread mmduf

I know this has been covered, and I've read all the threads, but wasn't
7.4 supposed to fix the problems switching from Squeezebox Server to my
squeezebox when the server has been shut down? If I had Squeezebox
Server connected, then shut everything down at the end of the day, when
I turn on the Squeezebox again the next day I get nothing. Then I have
to turn it on and off and on again to wake it up, so I can go back
through the menu and connect to my squeezebox. I thought there was
supposed to be a prompt, or better yet, it would automatically connect
to my squeezebox if the local server wasn't available. This is why my
wife won't touch the Squeezebox...

If you mean from your local SqueezeBoxServer to the universal

yes, it was supposed to be transparent.

But its a bit rough right now sometimes for some people.

If you can wait a few weeks, I expect that the bugs will be fixed.

Re: [slim] I officially declare my HATE for 7.4...

2009-10-18 Thread AndreE

I was reading all these posts with a smile... and grief

first three emotional posts were exactly what I have experienced in my
case.

most probably I am one of those who recently stepped into the game,
purchased quite a number of devices, just could configure them... and
got 7.4.0 installed
I still have no active local server and as a result was promoted to new
release voluntarily ;-)

my frustration was ... let's say also high.
now it is better - i know - I am not alone on this path... and ... it
does not help so...

some of mentioned issues appear in my case on regular base and some are
really easy to reproduce.
it is reduced menu and missing go back to Squeeze net menu entry
and many others...
as well as the counter on the remote showing the progress when all
receivers have greenish light
and not only...

but how I can bring this back to Logitech?
how to make it available to Developers... and are they interesting to
get my experience?

being in software business for many-many years I've seen some
acquisitions, where great products, designed for one purpose, were
targeted to another market segment...
and you know, it was not always easy and great idea, or even successful
move. Many were, but not all.

I truly believe and really hope that Duet would recover from this
downturn.
I truly wish it happening because I am one of those few (most likely
many) customers who suffers from this and who NEED this happening

the competition - is a big driver
market is very dynamic - no question
but users' trust - it is a great value, and it is better to wait a bit
longer, but bring mature product to the market where no visible or
harmful issues are.
there is no any product without bugs - it is normal, but there are
different bugs
some are - postpone Release to customer Date type !

and... my plans to expand my set-up are also on freeze and... I've
stopped advising this product... because, you know...
it is very embarrassing to see someone who has troubles with your
advice and... you cannot help and ...
this person had a great trust to your words, which are turned into the
dust at one day by some you have no influence to...
trust and loyalty are the great value

PS
typing on Logitech keyboard and using Logitech mouse, but not using
Logitech speakers and... thinking about Duet

[slim] Standalone phono stage?

2009-10-18 Thread audiomuze

Hoping someone can point me in the right direction here. I'm in the
process of moving my folks from CD/LP to an SB3/laptop combination - at
present they have about 100 of their albums FLAC encoded and in use with
the SB3. They love it. The next challenge they've presented me is to
either enable them to: 1) rip their LPs (many of which would be
difficult to obtain on CD), and/or 2) enable them to listen to their LPs
the old fashioned way.

The issue I'm faced with is that I recently replaced their old cheap
and nasty integrated radio/tape/phono system with an old NAD separates
system that doesn't include a phono stage in the preamp. Anyone know of
a decent sounding standalone phono stage that can act as a go-between to
the turntable and the preamp?

[slim] Is it possible to stream an arbitrary sound card to the squeezebox?

2009-10-18 Thread robotron2

Squeezebox is great but of course it is unlikely that there will ever
be a plug-in for every possible piece of music hardware and software out
there. For example, I use Mixmeister to create my own mixes and a Torq
Xponent MIDI DJ mixer/soundcard running the Torq software. I would like
to stream these to the squeezebox. If I could simply stream the PC
sound card, or even better, the sound card that is in the Torq Xponent
(which just appears as a normal Windows soundcard) to the Squeezebox,
this would be great. Is it possible?

(I suppose I could set up a shoutcast stream and then point the
squeezebox to that, but this seems unnecessarily complicated!!)

Re: [slim] I officially declare my HATE for 7.4...

2009-10-18 Thread Pascal Hibon

I guess that most of us know that this was initially a product line made
by a company called Slimdevices. The idea behind the product was to
provide great hardware and software that provides excellent audio
quality in the emerging digital audio age. And they did that in a
“community” kinda world. Since its beginning, the software platform has
been open source and DYI’ers were stimulated in building custom server
designs, tweaking the software, and even tweaking the hardware. The
whole system was intended for people who wanted an excellent audio
system where they could have their fair part of hands-on.
Now that this company has been bought by Logitech, I think it is
struggling a bit with the Slimdevices philosophy. Logitech is not used
to bringing products to the market that are partially built by their
customers. For example, I’m pretty sure that in the Slimdevices age, it
was way easier to postpone a software and or hardware release. In the
Logitech world, where there are CEO’s, VP’s, Sales Directors, etc ,
postponing a release is not what they want to hear. Both philosophies
(Slimdevices – Logitech) are not compatible. Logitech will need to find
its way to cope with this fact or they will start loosing customers.
Myself, I bought my first SB3 after evaluation this system against
Sonos. Slimdevices came out as a big winner for me, partially due to
Slimdevices philosophy. I don’t mind to be an “involuntary beta tester”
from time to time. It is part of the Slimdevices experience. And I know
I can always go back to a previous and stable system. I understand this
is not the case for everyone and this is where Logitech needs to work
on.

Re: [slim] Standalone phono stage?

2009-10-18 Thread Mnyb

http://www.project-audio.com/main.php?info=boxdesigncat=boxeslang=en

Is a popular choice, I don't know how they sound have not shopped for
riaa since 1994 .They have an USB model to, if you don't trust the
analog in of your PC to record the output.

Pro-Ject Phono Box II goeas around €85 and they have some even cheaper
models .
Don't go to cheap 12y old NAD is still decent stuff, and a good riaa is
somewhat demanding with the low voltages involved. They sound really
different so take time to listen to them, a model with selectable gain
and impedances is prefered , I think some come with possibility to alter
the capacitive load for mm pickups MC pickup is the trickiest part to do
right.

Or NAD PP-2 Phono Preamplifier avaliable at amazon a 265$

Cambridge have one at 90$

RIAA/Phono stage is a jungle , I'm surprised that there are cheap
alternatives . I thought phono stage had gone high end boutique stuff
only .
The subject have been of no interest to me since 1994 so I'm out of the
loop regarding what the hottest newest thing. Price wise the sky is the
limit.

Even if sound is somewhat uncritical, this boxes are small so borrow a
handfull from a decent hifi shop and listen to them.

Maybe getting a new pickup would be nice, the moving rubber parts tends
to dry and the stylys get wear and tear, get a pro to mount it if you
don't know how the pickup is mounting is adjustable for a reason. Sadly
most people (non audiphiles, that is ) pickups are mounted with gross
errors and the weight and anti skating adjustments are out of the
window, this damage records .

To actually record the output, there is a lot of old treads on this
forum on the subjekt with a lot of good advice, a search in the ripping
soundforum would certainly give something.
