Check the Sound preferences, and maybe reboot a couple of times.

There are a number of reports that this upgrade resets the preferences.

Here's another one. It reset mine. However, that was only the preference for
sound produced directly from the computer (preference changed from output via
my plug-in speakers to output via my Focusrite Saffire) not from anything to do
with Squeezecenter. Squeezeboxes were not affected.

future proofing as it's difficult to re-run ethernet once the drywall is
up. I also don't want to spend a fortune needlessly on wiring.

When one drags cables through a house, the cost of the wire is a tiny
portion of the cost. So go with the best you can. At least Cat6 these
days. Also, read up on the specs. Cat6 does not tolerate being pulled
hard through small holes, or in tight radius. The bits will fly out of
 the curves.

Run the good stuff, and never worry about it again.

If you can, drag some of the blue bendable conduit through the walls to
a common place (basement, wiring closet, etc.) its fairly cheap, and if
you need it later, you will love having it in place.

Also drag good, high bandwidth cable for the TV, and put a box with
Ethernet behind every place you could ever want a TV. In the future, you
are likely to download or stream TV shows.

I've been wanting to do this for ages but am a little worried about
regs. I know it can vary by locality, but does anyone know if in general
(in the US) a homeowner can do this kind of work without getting
permits/inspections etc? I'm concerned about insurance companies having
a get out if they decide you had unauthorized wiring in the walls
after a fire (even if it wasn't a contributing factor). I'm perfectly
confident I can do it safely, and would of course use the in-wall rated
stuff.

What do you mean, much less expensive? I'll agree that paying for labor
to pull wires in existing construction is expensive, but the OP is
talking about new construction, before the wallboard goes on. A 1000
foot roll of CAT5 is under $100, and even Cat6 is under $200.

You do not need junctions boxes in the walls for low voltage stuff, you
can just use mud rings.

For new construction or serious remodeling, you can do a whole house for
the cost of a few homeplugs.

Its been a few years now, but I dragged 1600 feet of cat5 through my 20
year old house. It took a while, and I had to cut out a patch of drywall
about a foot square in one wall to get the bundles from the basement to
the attic (two story house).

Check with your local building code/permit folks. But in general, low
voltage wiring (POTS, alarm systems, ethernet) can be done by the homeowner.

In my county, the homeowner can even do their own 120v AC work, after a
class and passing a test. You still have to get any main-power work
inspected, but you can do that work yourself.

The problem is it varies by locality. Generally speaking you don't
need to get a permit to do low voltage work such as alarms, doorbells,
network and audio/video.

You just need to make sure that the cables are rated class-2 or class-3
for in wall use, or plenum rated cable for use in heating ducts or drop
ceilings as Pat indicated.

[slim] Speedy webradios

2009-11-12 Thread flyingdoherty

Hi,
I'm actually happy with my system, but a strange bug occurs since
around two weeks now... When accessing to a webradio (any webradio,
around 50% of the time), the speed is twice the normal speed (till the
end of the cache), or, sometimes, half the normal speed... I have to go
back in my favorites, choose back the radio, and, eventually, it will go
ok...

I was on 7.4.2, , I deinstall and reinstall then I upgraded to the last
build, and it's the same story...
Not such a bif deal (even funny on certain songs), but a bit
annoying...

Any solution around?

thanks
Stephan

Over on this side of the pond I would recommend using the best cable you
can afford labour costs totally outweigh the cost of the materials.

Using some form of pre-roped ducting is great although knowing some of
the building pratcices I have seen they won't respect that fact that
tight bends are a no-no.

When we had our extension built I had ducting run from the house under
the extension out to my garden office, and being a fibre person I ran
150m of fibre .future proof...

Since the UK requires building inspections during construction you will
require LSOH cables or plenum cables in walls, or voids.

I use the system instance of mysql with my linux install. The changes are

[slim] My SB3 display has died after 2 years.

2009-11-12 Thread philipb

This is the body of a message I sent to support after my SB3 display
died:

Hi there.

I am a long time SB user and have a SB1 and a SB3.

Last night, the SB3 was working fine. This morning when I came
downstairs, the screen was dead and I could not wake it. I could still

play music through the web interface. I then unplugged the power lead
and reset the box, but the display is still dead and I can no longer
see it through the web interface (I guess it is waiting for network
setup to take place, but I can't do it since I can't see the screens).

I have plugged my old SB1 in in place of the SB3 and it works fine,
using the SB3 remote.

I have taken the box apart and made sure that the cards are all seated

properly. The red light is glowing in the back of the SB3 so I know
that power is getting through.

My setup is:

IMac OSX 10.6.1 Snow Leopard.

Routed through a Netgear DM111P router and Apple Airport Extreme Base
Station.

SB Server Version: 7.4.0 - r28672 @ Mon Sep 28 17:49:57 PDT 2009

It looks to me as though the display on my SB3 has died.

Do you have any suggestions as to whether there could be something
else I have missed?

If it is dead, is it possible to get it fixed in the UK?

I bought the SB3 in the US in December 2007.

Thanks for any input you may be able to give me.

And this is the response I got from Customer Support.

Dear Philip;

Recently you requested personal assistance from our on-line support

Yes, that's really lousy boilerplate push-em-through customer service.

That said, at some point the SB3 warranty went from 1 year to 2 years.
I forget when that was, but I *think* it was before Dec 2007. So your
unit could still be under warranty. If so, I hope you didn't screw that
up by opening it up yourself.

Is it possible? sure. Does it make any economic sense? probably not. And
once the Touch is really shipping, the value of an SB3 is going to crater.

Lots of current consumer mass market electronics are like toasters: buy

Re: [slim] My SB3 display has died after 2 years.

2009-11-12 Thread bebop

My deepest condolences to Philipb, a SB3 dying so young is hopefully not
the standard.
Of course, as an electronic technician I'm used to see faulty equipment
everyday, but a low power consuming device like the SB3 is not normally
the victim of the usual heat damages or dried out capacitors you
normally see. But anyway, the SB3 has a high voltage power circuitry for
the VFD,so my first guess would be that the fault is located somewhere
around that, but as the SB3 goes out of production, it would suit
Logitech to publish a circuit diagram, so the remaining owners had a
chance to keep their old equipment alive.

Just for fun, I'm the proud owner of a 25 year old Sansui amplifier, a
15 year old Technics vinyl player and several other vintage stuff, but
if it is made properly and there is somebody out there with a circuit
diagram who can fix it, it will probably last you a lifetime.

Re: [slim] My SB3 display has died after 2 years.

2009-11-12 Thread philipb

To be honest, all that has happened is exactly what we predicted would
happen when Slim got taken over by a much bigger, less focussed group.

In the early days, when Dean and Sean were there and KDF was the forum
guru, there was a sense that anything that could be done to fix a
problem, would be.

Now, I am told that consumer items are designed to end up as landfill
after a couple of years and sod the environment.

As for getting it fixed under warranty, I don't see Logitech offering
me that after I admit opening the box. Another difference from the old
days - when my SB1 wireless card came unseated, Dean advised me to open
the box and gave me a personal assurance that it would not void my
warranty.

I wonder what the predicted life of the touch screen will be on the new
SB?

[slim] Squeezebox v3 - keeps rebooting, please help

2009-11-12 Thread equation

Hello,

I bought a Squeezebox 3 in early 2006. It's always given me stellar
performance and so in good faith I sold it to someone. The person has
emailed me telling me it does not work. It shows the logitech logo then
reboots - repeating this process continuously.

Now, I don't have reason to not believe him as he is a trusted person
so I've told him to send it me back if he can't fix it. He's tried a
hardware reset (pressing and holding add then booting up, and has also
tried an audio reset (pressing 1), but the problem continues.

Is this a firmware or hardware problem? Could anyone offer any other
advice on what he could try before sending it back to me? Your help
would be highly appreciated.

Thank you!

Can you give us the usual details - particularly what version of

Squeezebox server or mysqueezebox.com when the reboot loop started?

Assuming you have tried the factory reset as well and checked the IP
address isn't conflicting with anything else on the network?

The last time I had this problem (not with an SB3 but a testing unit) I
had been listening to Napster (so a protected WMA stream). When I
managed to delete the stream from the playlist using the web interface,

I have lived with a modded my.tt (see my posts earlier in this thread)
with set innodb_buffer_pool_size set to 500m for two weeks, monitoring
the memory usage via Windows Task Manager.
Unless I have performed a Clear Rescan, mysqld.exe does not use more
than about 125M. Lazy searches are extra fast, with the number of
matches almost instant as I enter each character. The GUI is fast and as
I said earlier a pleasure to use (this is with a library of 97,759
tracks, 8,473 albums, most with cover.jpg - mostly FLAC, but some mp3
and m4a).
Browsing by albums - Home Albums - takes a few seconds going from one
letter to another, but is still acceptable. Clicking on the artwork
instantly brings up the album details.
Browsing by artists - Home Artists - also takes a a couple of seconds
between letters, but again clicking on an artist brings up an instant
display of the albums.
Search Music - Home Search -is nearly instant in displaying search
results.
This mod is certainly worthwhile in Windows and Squeezecenter 7.3.4

Re: [slim] Accessories?

2009-11-12 Thread matmar10

Hi All,

Sorry for the confusion here. We are no longer supporting the separate
Squeezebox store, so we're working to get all Squeezebox accessories and
parts up on the Logitech.com site.

Most of the replacement parts can be found in the support section of
Logitech.com:
http://www.logitech.com/index.cfm/support_downloads/downloads/speakers_audio/cl=us,en
Pick your product from that list and select 'replacement parts' on the
bottom right area of the page.

Unfortunately not ALL parts are yet available -- we're working to make
these all available on Logitech.com. I'll be sure to post back with
updates about the status of the missing items when they become
available.

Thank you for pointing out the broken (circular) linking on
LogitechSqueezebox.com accessories -- this is a bug I'll work to fix so
there's no confusion about the now closed store.

Mongo -- Since SB Classic remote is not yet on Logitech.com, I suggest
contacting support. They will be able to help you with your remote in
lieu of availability on Logitech.com. I've attached instructions below
on contacting support:

Please follow the link below the click on the Email Support link.

Please be sure to select the correct product in the product selection
drop down menu.

Audio Network Music Players then select the correct Squeezebox
product you are requesting support for.

Ah, sorry. Somehow I missed the Receiver part and assumed the thread
was about the Squeezebox Radio. Probably because it has radios in the
title. :)

[slim] Need help understanding synchronization between Squeezebox Server Mysqueezebox.com

2009-11-12 Thread sirozha

Hi,

I have been using a Squeezebox Boom for 5 days now with Squeezebox
Server 7.4.1 and iPeng.

Today I realized that apps from the App Gallery on Mysqueezebox.com and
plugins in Squeezebox Server are not the same thing. What makes it
confusing is that iPeng can install apps and put them in the My Apps
menu, and then I can see these Apps in the Squeezebox Server under the
My Apps menu. However, when I try to uninstall the apps from iPeng, the
behavior is very inconsistent. Even though iPeng says it uninstalled
them, they show up randomly in Squeezebox server. I was especially
having a problem with the podcasts app. I installed Podcast Player from
iPeng, but I could not see how to add my own podcasts so that Podcast
Player would see them. iPeng doesn't seem to have the feature to add
podcasts, and when I tried adding them in Squeezebox server in
Squeezebox server settings on the Podcasts tab, I could not find a menu
in iPeng from which I could see and play the added podcasts. I figured
out the the Podcast feature in Squeezebox server is added by the
Podcasts plugin (not to be confused with the Podcast Player app) that is
located in Squeezebox settings on the Plugins tab. So, it appeared that
iPeng could have the Podcast Player app that could not see the custom
podcasts I was trying to add, and the Squeezebox server had the place to
add custom podcasts in Squeezebox server settings on the Podcast tab,
but iPeng did not have the menu that would access that information.

Finally, I decided to switch my Squeezebox Boom from using the
Squeezebox server to using Mysqueezebox.com. Suddenly, I realized that
the apps that iPeng saw were the same apps available on Mysqueezebox.com
When I tried to delete the Podcast Player add, it was gone from iPeng.
When I added the Podcast Player add in iPeng it appeared in
Mysqueezebox.com. So far so good! Then I clicked on the Podcast Player
add and saw a place where I could add a custom podcast. It was similar
to the Podcast plugin in Squeezebox server. So, I added a custom podcast
in Podcast Player add on Mysqueezebox.com, and I was able to see this
custom podcast in iPeng under Podcast Player. So, my conclusion is that
the integration with Mysqueezebox.com works quite a bit better than with
Squeezebox server, at least when it comes to controlling a Squeezebox
device using iPeng and especially when trying to play custom podcasts
while controlling the Squeezebox device from iPeng.

Lastly, I switched my Squeezebox Boom back to Squeezebox server, but
this time I went to Squeezebox server settings and under the
mysqueezebox.com tab enabled the integration between the Squeezebox
server and Mysqueezebox.com. In this configuration, I was still able to
add podcasts in Podcast Player on Mysqueezebox.com and see them using
Podcast Player in iPeng. Then, I proceeded to remove the Podcast plugin
from the list of plugins in Squeezebox server, and I was still able to
use the Podcast Player app on iPeng. Therefore, I came to the conclusion
that the plugins available in Squeezebox server and the apps available
in Mysqueezebox.com are not the same thing.

However, I am still a little confused. I see that there are a lot of
Squeezebox player settings that can be set both in Squeezebox server and
in Mysqueezebox.com. Even though the integration between the Squeezebox
server and Mysqueezebox.com is enabled, the player settings configured
in Mysqueezebox.com have absolutely no effect on the way the Squeezebox
Boom behaves as long as it is connected to the Squeezebox server. The
player settings in Squeezebox server take an immediate effect on the
Squeezebox Boom. So, what exactly does the integration between the
Squeezebox server and Mysqueezbox.com affect? I know that the
applications can be installed and configured in Mysqueezebox.com while
it is integrated with Squeezebox server and the Squeezebox device
associated with the Squeezebox server. What other settings are affected
by this integration?

Can someone explain the difference between the Squeezebox server
plugins and the apps available in iPeng and in Mysqueezebox.com?

Sorry for this long post, but I am going crazy trying to understand how
it all works together.

Re: [slim] Need help understanding synchronization between Squeezebox Server Mysqueezebox.com

2009-11-12 Thread gcurrie

I don't know for sure, but I think the integration is somewhat a 'work
in progress.' That would be why you are seeing less than consistent
behaviors.

I have noticed that by moving from 7.4 to 7.4.1 to 7.4.2 beta and now
7.5.0 beta, the integration seems to be getting more solid. Possibly
work is also being done to MySb.com at the same time.

I just don't think we can count on the integration to be complete at
this point. It's worlds better than 6 weeks ago, so I feel it will be
there by the end of the year.
