Re: [slim] Announce: New Squeezeslave 0.9 Release available on sourceforge

2009-11-15 Thread ralphy

I don't think your error would be resolved by compiling squeezeslave
natively, it indicates that the vorbis decoder does not recognize the
stream as vorbis. The vorbis decoder is probably the least tested part
of SS, at least by me. Looking at the decoder source, the behaviour
you're seeing is to be expected. If any error occurs while decoding
ogg/vorbis the decoder stops and you need to manually advance to the
next track as a bug in the buffering code prevents SS from advancing
automatically. I hope to have this fixed for version 1.0.

Please provide the version and revision of Squeezebox Server you're
running as well as the ouput from squeezeslave -V

Re: [slim] Squeezebox Static IPs?

2009-11-15 Thread MrSinatra

i use a static IP on my sb2 outside the dhcp range b/c the sb2 makes it
easy to do so.

i use dhcp reservations on the duet b/c they don't make it easy not
to use dhcp. the reservations are in the dhcp and make the gear always
have the same ip in the range.

i think setting a static IP on the duet is only possible if dhcp is off
or u use some config utility. i've seen bugs asking for it to be easy
like on the sb2, which i voted for.

Re: [slim] A question about cats

2009-11-15 Thread RonM

We built our house ten years ago, and seized the opportunity to install
cabling in the walls (at the time, to support distribution of satellite
tv and also ethernet to computers). We put connect boxes in a whole lot
of places, all terminated at a patch panel -- still bristling with
multiple cable ends. Am not sure of the cabling CAT type, not sure if 5e
was out and about at the time.

However, the cabling works well and is supporting HD satellite at 1080i
(as high as it gets). The ethernet supports several computers in
several locations, including links to the dedicated Fit2 music server,
as well as the router. Unfortunately, we did not put enough connect
boxes, and have been unable to use it for the SB system itself -- had to
drill a hole in the floor to get ethernet to the router for our main
system, use wireless for the alternate (where there is one cable
connection, but not ehternet). So I fully agree with the advice to
install LOTS of connect boxes.

Overkill at initial construction is the obvious strategy. When we
upgraded to HD satellite recently, it was clear that the existing
siamese cabling (two cables in one piece) was sufficient to support the
signal, but limits us to two receivers in the house -- need a separate
cable for each receiver if you are to tune the TVs separately). Would
have been best to install a total of four cables from the dish location
to the patch panel, giving options for additional TVs/receivers in the
house -- the switch to split the incoming sat signal is at the dish, and
our supplier will only install it at the dish not inside the house,
perhaps there are technical issues.

The other thing we did when building was install good speaker wire in
the walls, from the obvious location for the main stereo system, to the
obvious main listening area. This was a great idea, but too limited. I
wish we'd installed more locations allowing connectons through some sort
of patch panel to multiple listening areas, and probably multiple
options for location of the SBs/amps, etc. Of course, SB type systems
were not yet a factor in our consciousness.

Ron

[slim] SB3 Delayed Start

2009-11-15 Thread Kyle

I have two SB3's that I often sync. One stays hooked to my stereo,
while the other feeds into a pair of AE5's that I move around. The
second one often takes several minutes to come on after I plug it in.
The screen is just black for several minutes (up to 10), and then it
decides to come on, hook into the network and sync to the other SB.
Both of these SB's are at a vacation home, so they often are unplugged
for weeks at a time. This doesn't seem to bother the one that stays
hooked to the stereo, however. Since it is plugged into the stereo's
power outlet perhaps it is never completely without a power supply. It
still doesn't seem right that the other SB3 does not power up
immediately.

while your approach is a bit too direct, you have a valid point.

I too am a long time user of the product and I completely agree. The
engineers at Logitech need to be put under control. squeeze server has
become way too bloated and the fact that the entire menu structure has
gotten rebuilt is pretty near insane.

I would think the goal is to maximize sales and not to cater solely to

The big expense is the labor. If you are doing such a major
construction project and the general contractor is amenable the smartest
move would be to run your own wire everywhere, and put some of the 3/4
inch smurf tubes for future use as well. Terminate it all to a patch
panel in the basement, crawl space, etc.

A friend of mine paid $3300 to have his entire house wired while it was
being built. They would not let him do it because he wasn't a licensed
contractor. So, he ended up with about $500 of wires installed at a
cost of $2800.

At the end of the day though he's still better off for it. He has
cat5e and speakers pre-wired to pretty much every part of the home.

Re: [slim] Seriously p*****d off! (rant)

2009-11-15 Thread mlsstl

I don't think 15 minutes to work out a major software upgrade sounds
unreasonable.

The only time I'm bothered by changes are when they seem gratuitously
unnecessary or pointless.

Of course, sometimes companies do an extraordinarily poor job of
explaining the underlying reason for a change, or hide the explanation
in small-print footnotes.

I'll have to agree the new Apps menu items complicated things
(especially for people whose primary interest is just playing music) but
with a little work I just got the Apps Gallery and Installer off the
main menu.

However, the switch between server hosted music and internet radio is
now better, IMO.

The 7.4 upgrade went pretty smoothly for me. The Controller seemed to
pick up the change without issue.

I actually had a far bigger problem when I moved from the version 6
server software to the first 7. There was a cache that needed clearing
before the new software would run right. However, I'm a Linux user and
just kind of used to the install and upgrade process never being quite
as smooth as the more automated Windows and Mac process.

However, I'll agree that Logitech needs to continue working toward
making their products friendlier for the non-geek consumer.

Actually I think one of the great things about networked audio systems
like the SBs is that it can eliminate the need to run a lot of speaker
cable around the house. Shift the paradigm from home run speaker cable
to every room to just running cat5e or cat6 to each room, and then put
an SB with amp+speakers or self-powered speakers and you're good to go.
To me that was one of the great attractions of the SB system, getting
whole house audio without having to shell out for extensive new wiring.
I've wired things the way you describe for our recent addition, pulled
cat5e wherever I can in the older part of the house, and rely on wifi in
the few spots that are just too much of a pain for me to pull cat5e.

net udap is the way to assign static ip on the receiver .

For the controller there is an alternative approach, you use ssh and
edit the etc/network/interfaces file directly, once you figured that out
it is easier than factory reset and stumble through hopeless setup
wizards.

what the duet still lacks after almost 2 years is a decent way to
change parts of the settings in sbr/sbc in a reasonable manner.

[slim] Server control from remote PC?

2009-11-15 Thread GRC

Before you start - I've searched - but my brain now hurts so I'm just
gonna ask the question again ...

I have Squeezebox Server 7.4.1 running on a dedicated (wired) Sony
laptop. Playback via SlimP3, SB3 Classic and Boom in various
(synchronised)locations. I also have a Controller which is often where
I am not. Everything works OK.

However, when I'm working on my little EeePC (connected wirelessly),
how do I log on to the server through the web interface to control
what's playing? I don't want to play on the EeePC via SqueezePlay -
just control the server like with the Controller.

Have played with various URLs without success. No static addresses
implemented.

I used to understand this sh*t back in the 80s and 90s but it's all
getting too complicated for us middle-aged baby-boomers with a serious
red wine habit ...

Thanks

Well, the problem is not connecting to it, but rather how you name it.

Manual approach:
go to the server pc, open a shell window and type ipconfig
it will tell you the IP address of the server. Something like
192.168.1.4

Go to the EEE, and in a browser, type http://192.168.1.4:9000

Get that to work, and then we will address how to use names.
There are lots of ways to set that up, but details depend on a lot of
stuff, so lets get the basics working first

Re: [slim] Server control from remote PC?

2009-11-15 Thread aubuti

Assuming that the server and your netbook are on the same LAN (ie, by
remote you don't mean from a different LAN via the internet) it's
simple: point the netbook's browser to http://serverip:9000/, where
serverip is the local IP address of the Sony laptop. As the Sony
doesn't have a static IP address the serverip will be a moving
target.

If that doesn't work then you'll have to open some ports on your
firewall. Check the installation instructions in the wiki (or the online
manuals), which should give you a quicker answer than trying to slog
through forum posts.

Re: [slim] Server control from remote PC?

2009-11-15 Thread GRC

Well that has to be a record for the swiftest replies to one of my forum
postings! Stroll on guys - thanks!

The (simple) trick I missed (-age and vinho tinto-) was to ipconfig on
the Sony server to get the current address (thanks Pat). Up and running
on 192.168.1.100:9000!

So is it easy to set up a static IP on the server or does it involve
discussion with the ISP? I have a bog-standard ADSL setup with a
Linksys WAG54GX2 gateway. Be nice to have a Favorites button for the
browser to leap straight to the server.

-Muito obrigado- as we say in these 'ere parts.

Well, the trick is that you don't really need a static IP in the sense
that your ISP will talk about (and charge for)

What you need is for the server to always get the same IP address from
whatever is doing DHCP serving. Which for most folks is their router.

I am not familiar with your quoted Linksys WAG54GX2, but I would guess
that it works as a ADSL modem out one side, with some Ethernet ports and
a WiFi out into your house.

In that case, you just need to tell the Linksys WAG54GX2 to assign the
same IP address to the MAC in your Apple Server (MAC here is the magic
ethernet mac-level address, a long string of hex characters).

Re: [slim] Server control from remote PC?

2009-11-15 Thread aubuti

Sim, é muito fácil especificar um endereço IP static. Exactly how you
do it depends on what OS is running on your Sony. Normally in the
network setup parameters you can set whether the pc gets its IP address
dynamically from the router or gets a fixed IP address. Set a fixed IP
address that is within the range you are using, but is not already used
by another device.

Alternatively, you may be able to reserve an IP address for your Sony
based on the hardware address (MAC address) of its network card.

Note that the static IP is only static within your home network -- no
need whatsoever for your ISP to get involved.

2009-11-15 Thread JJZolx

Do they have to be IP addresses set on the devices themselves, or do you
just want to be sure that they have fixed/known IP addresses? If it's
the latter, then look into using DHCP reservations on your router. You
just tie the assigned IP addresses to the MAC addresses of the devices.

Thanks for the response and for taking an interest. The info you asked
for is below. I should re-iterate, the vorbis decoder works perfectly
when playing files from the beginning, but always fails when jumping to
a point in the middle of a track. Perhaps by feeding it a file part-way
through, it misses some vital information from the beginning?

Squeezebox server version: 7.4.1 - r28947
(although the same problem occurred using 7.3)

squeezeslave -V output:

squeezeslave 0.9-95

A little while ago, I noticed that my SC music folder is empty.
Everything else seems populated: albums, artists, new music, playlists,
etc. But I can no longer click on music folder to manually navigate
the filesystem holding my music files. Could these errors be the cause
of that?

My SC is on WinXP, unfortunately. I plan on moving it to my Linux
machine after the semester is over.

Thanks!

In general, a device, such as a Radio or SB3 or iPhone or other TCP/IP

This is because if there are two devices on the network claiming to be
the same IP address, its very bad.

The normal model is to find the thing on your network that is serving up
DCHP addresses, and go there and force it to assign the address you want.

[slim] Any video steaming servers with library capability, like SqueezeServer?

2009-11-15 Thread tbessie

Hi all...

So I'm setting up things so I can stream videos around my house
wirelessly. I am using SqueezeServer (or whatever it's name is now) for
music, but I'm wondering what you all know out there for something very
similar that can stream video (HD and SD), as well as scan/maintain a
database or library, etc.

Since my video is scattered around various machines, it would be nice
if I didn't have to just mount filesystems on the client machines and
look for movies, but have a central video server to do that, and manage
a library.

Anyone know of a product, free or not, that does that, for video?

er, its not a tool, its a protocol or API. Perhaps someone has writen a
tool, I haven't looked, I just beat my DHCP server until it does the
right thing.

Even if there is a tool, how often do you need to run it? every power
