Aren't you limited to something like 12 tracks per mix without a key?

Re: [slim] MusicIP... still relevant?

2009-11-19 Thread erland

Did you do a fresh installation of latest MusicIP or did you just
upgrade/reinstall on top of an old version ?

Maybe you have some old license key somewhere which you just need to
delete ?

Which MusicIP version are you using ?
On which operating system ?

it seems that without the license the server will not recognize the
mmm.ini file, which redirect the cache location. I can live without this
but it would be a nice feature. If anyone has this working without a
license key please let me know.

Re: [slim] How to Stream over Internet to Motorola Droid

2009-11-19 Thread SuperQ

One really great way to provide safe forwarding is to use connectbot to
open an ssh connection through your router to your server and port
forward 9000 to the Droid. This would be safe encrypted way of doing
this. Unfortunately setting up SSH server on WHS is probably not all
that fun.

I think there's some info on the wiki about doing that.

Why do you need the license key? All the functionality for Squeezebox
Server integration is available in the free mode. I think having a
license just gives you access to some of the power tools, which don't
work via Squeezebox Server anyway.

Agreed. I thought the Squeezebox guys and the Pandora guys were tight,
but maybe that relationship isn't what it once was. Either way,
streaming 192 kbps would be a great enhancement to the Squeezebox
experience.

Re: [slim] Logitech - please work with Pandora for 192kbps streaming!

2009-11-19 Thread garym

There's plenty of discussion of this on the web by very informed folks
(in this forum and other places), so I don't want to turn this thread
into a repeat of all that info. You may have amazing hearing, but there
is lots of scientific evidence that clearly indicates that it is fairly
rare for any individual to be able to ABX in a blind test the difference
between a properly encoded 128 mp3 with the original CD. If you were
posting over at Hydrogenaudio.org the folks would demand that you post
your blind ABX test results to back up your statement about detecting
differences (one of their terms of service). Of course, we're not over
there and things are much looser here.

I can't speak to streams from pandora as there are so many more
variables in the mix other than just the actual source file (and not
sure how to easily do an ABX test with pandora stream since you don't
have the source file in another format). Keep in mind that even
extremely small differences in volume can make one source sound better
than another (again, lots of hard evidence on this).

Bottom line, Pandora may very well not sound as good as your local
files, but in general, 128 (created with a modern, quality encoder) is
typically transparent for most users on most music. Your statement that
the reverse is true flies in the face of lots of controlled experiments.
I'm not trying to pick a fight by the way, I just hate to see myths
about lossy encoding quality be perpetuated. That said, there are lots
of reason to rip music to FLAC (or other lossless format), and I do so
with all my own CDs.

Thanks for trying to help. I did think of unisnstalling using

looked. I will try deleting the directories and reinstalling. I will
let you know how I get on.

I'm gong to update the params and will get the details to you shortly

I have consistently been able to pick up on the differences between
even my --alt preset extreme LAME rips and the original CDs.

I have a modest sound system in my workout room that consists of an
old (but very robust) Yamaha AVR and a pair of Polk budget speakers.

Numerous times when listening to Pandora (and busting my butt) I've
noticed how flat, lifeless, distorted and dull the audio is. I will
frequently then play this same track, from the same Squeezebox from my
own library and the difference is extremely noticeable.

In fact I would say that it would be hard for someone NOT to be able to
tell the difference.

192 simply because if it exists, I want it (same reason I listen to all
my own files in lossless FLACbut it is not because I think I can
actually HEAR the difference between lossless FLAC and mp3--because I
can'tin fact, I can't ABX lame mp3 at -V5 from original source on
high-end equipment or good headphones except for a few known, rare
samples.)

It's only going to come at the insistence of higher ups at Logitech.
Not from one developer emailing another and asking "Dude, where's the
new API?" and getting a response, "Dude, I'm swamped." My guess would
be that the revenue being generated for Pandora from owners of Logitech
products is pretty small, so 192k support is a pretty low priority.

Re: [slim] Announce: New Squeezeslave 0.9 Release available on sourceforge

2009-11-19 Thread ralphy

No. It's best to NOT put a space between the option and the value.

-o2 -r15 -voff -m00:00:00:00:00:79 sbshost

It's one of the updates I need to make to the MAC setup info.

Did you confirm that squeezeslave was running with the -r10 before you
put the machine to sleep? You can check by running ps axww from a
terminal window.

Also, currently the power on/off is ignored by squeezeslave unless
you're running the version which includes the display or interactive
compile option.

Please add -Y/var/tmp/squeezeslave.log and -dslimproto options to your
plist to capture any output that squeezeslave might be sending during
the sleep/resume cycle. It might help with debugging. Change the path
and filename for the logfile if needed.

The keepalive option is silently ignored by squeezeslave if the server
version is 7.0+, so unless you're running 6.5 it's not going to help.

Would you provide the compile options line from -V as well.

Thanks for the suggested update to the MAC instructions I'll checkout
Lingon.

[slim] Logitech - please work with Pandora for 192kbps streaming!

2009-11-19 Thread jmpage2

I am a paying Pandora One account holder, which means that when I'm
listening to Pandora on my computer I am treated to 192kbps audio that
sounds notably better than 128kbps garbage.

Unfortunately this enhanced audio quality does not work on the
Squeezebox platform.

I contacted Pandora support about this and they said that they have
considered adding 192kbps audio streams to other devices but that it
would also take work on the part of the device maker to support this as
well.

So, if Logitech has any pull with Pandora whatsoever please try to get
us 192kbps audio for the Squeeze products. I have three players and am
considering a fourth but since Pandora is what I use most it's a real
drag to listen to low quality garbage on my mid-fi and hi-fi setups.

[slim] MusicIP... still relevant?

2009-11-19 Thread friendlyfire

Hi,
During the process of reworking my network, and all the varous servers
I needed to reconfigure my music server. I had been running MusicIP,
primarly as a database and libray managment/editing tool with a
reasonably successful integration to the Squeezeserver. I have looked
around, and do not see anything I prefer for this function.

I've been following SpiceFlys guide and realize that one of the steps
doesn't work because my MusicIP license is invalid. I am willing to
purchase a license, but the software seemed to be abandoned by the
creator and the links are all busted.

so...
does anyone have an idea of where I can get a license key for MusicIP
or...
should I abandon this idea and go with another, newer technology?
(I have been playing around with FooBar, and can make it do much of
what I want, but not all)

ideas and comments welcome!

My squeezebox had just ground to a halt. I pressed "play" and whatever
other key it was on the remote and the whole system set itself up again
from scratch. But after a week or two it went back to the frequent
upgrade demands.

In the case of the Rhapsody upgrades, I can't tell whether it's
Rhapsody or Logitch that's requiring the upgrade.

But I now have the most recent 7.4.1 and we'll see if it continues.

The -r10 didn't work out. Same symptom, squeezeslave just disappeared
from the SBS list of players.

I pressed the power button in the SBS UI before putting the machine to

machine now again for 5 minutes and remembered to check. No longer
listed.

I'm going to try the -k (keep alive) next.

Re: [slim] Announce: New Squeezeslave 0.9 Release available on sourceforge

2009-11-19 Thread MelonMonkey

Here's some info:

SBS: Version: 7.4.1 - r28947 @ Tue Oct 20 08:13:15 PDT 2009
squeezeslave: 0.9-95

-L:

Output devices:
* 2: Built-in Output

squeezeslave params: squeezeslave -o 2 -v off -m 00:00:00:00:16:16
192.168.8.208

I will try the -r option. Sleep/wake doesn't always make squeezeslave
disappear from the player list. Only sometimes and I still don't know
exactly when. BTW, when it "stops" its process is still running - it
just doesn't appear in the player list of SBS.

In your Mac instructions you might want to suggest using Lingon to
create the launchd plist instead of having people edit manually the
sample. It will make sure the format is correct and put it in the right
place. It also allows you to input the command line params the same way
you would in a terminal. The example plist in the Mac instructions
doesn't work with Snow Leopard . The arguments must all be split into
their own strings wherever there is a space on the command line. For
instance "-o 4" must actually be two separate strings.

[slim] How to Stream over Internet to Motorola Droid

2009-11-19 Thread dlaflamm

Can anyone describe what steps, settings and apps are necessary to
stream my music over the Internet (3G?) to my Motorola Droid? Some
background info:

I am running Squeezebox Server version 7.4.1 installed using the WHS
installer. My server is a first generation HP MediaSmart Server
(EX470). I have successfully installed and used the Android
SqueezeControl app from within my home network to control my SB Boom
(very nice app!).

I know I need to do something with port 9000 on my router and I have
the WHS Port Forwarding Add-In installed. But I'm not sure how to
configure it, especially how to do it in a reasonably secure manner. My
router is a D-Link DI-624.

My router always assigns my server the same local IP, but I don't have
a static IP Internet connection (Comcast). I do have remote access
set-up using an HP web address (https://www.myname.hpmediasmart.com). I
tried accessing my music by adding /stream.mp3 to the above url, but
since I haven't done anything to open port 9000 yet I'm not surprised it
did not work.

I have the DroidLive Lite and RockNDroid players installed. Any
recommendation on which to keep/use?

What other information is pertinent to helping? Thanks for whatever
advice/direction you can offer.

I did search this forum (and beyond), but did not come up with anything
specific enough. There is a nice thread on streaming to Nokia phones,
but the port configuration and security issue isn't described in enough
detail. Apologies if I missed info somewhere -- a pointer is fine if
this info can be found elsewhere.

-David

For ripping VortexBox uses cdparanoia. It has several methods to get a
bit perfect rip but it does not use AccurateRip.

How much does your power cost? At .10/kwh a standard PC like the one
your using uses about 120watts and costs about $105 a year to run. A
VortexBox appliance uses 24 watts and cost $20 a year to run and a Micro
applaince draws 6 watts a year and cost $5 a year to run.

So if you bought a VortexBox Micro Applaince for $400 your payback
would be about 4 years just in power savings! Plus you would get a much
quieter small box!

As I've understood the plan is that everything is going to be apps, the
7.4 released was rushed a bit because the Radio hardware required it,
the same thing will probably happen soon with the 7.5 release which is
required for the Touch hardware. However, after that I hope Logitech
takes some time to consolidate things to avoid further confusion. After
the consolidation, you will just have the App Gallery that contains both
music services provided by Logitech and third party plugins and applets
provided by third party developers.

You do have a choice. :)

The problem is that your local SB server is a different FW version than
the MySB.com online server, so every time you switch between them your
players are "updating".

Choices:
1. Keep updating your local SB server when this happens, then the two
servers will be the same FW version.
2. Don't connect your players directly to MySB.com, just use your
local SB server for all Internet Radio & Music Services, no updates
needed.
3. Continue to switch between your local SB server and MySB.com and
update the player each time, as you are doing now.
4. Turn off Automatic Updates (not available on all SB players). Some
of the SB players can be set to ignore FW updates when switching between
the two servers, like the SB3. Dunno about the other players.

What server version are you using?

Are you also using MySqueezebox.com (previously called

If the server you are using is older than 7.4 then you will be prompted
to change firmware when you change back and forth between the two
servers. To stop this update to to 7.4.1 (or 7.4.2 nightly build) and
the problem should go away.

This must depend on what version you are on. I'm running 7.3.3 and I'm
not forced to upgrade when I access Pandora or Slacker. Fortunately the
later releases support using these services without switching your
server to squeezenetwork (or whatever it is called these days). If you
do that, then yes, it will force you to upgrade to use the services.

Re: [slim] Seriously p*****d off! (rant)

2009-11-19 Thread wduncan

There is no choice. You're using your squeezebox or transporter and are
required to upgrade before connecting to your server or to a music
service. It happens virtually every time you use the system.

Are people saying there's some way around this?

[slim] constant software updates!!

2009-11-19 Thread wduncan

The button most used on my Transporter and Squeezebox remotes is
"brightness". Virtually every time I use them, some update is required,
either Rhapsody or Logitech. What is going on!

Re: [slim] feature request: auto connect to squeezenetwork when slim server offline

2009-11-19 Thread ian_heys

Something like this feature is already provided as part of the
ServerPowerControl plugin.

You can close down the server PC and switch to whatever SqueezeNetwork
is called now (why did they change it?) from the player's remote control
and lots of other server power control possiblities.

Not sure it made the transition to 7.4 gracefully yet though?

Re: [slim] Announce: New Squeezeslave 0.9 Release available on sourceforge

2009-11-19 Thread ralphy

Do you have the retry command line option in your the
squeezeslave.plist? If not, try adding a -r10 before the hostname.
Without the retry option squeezeslave just stops when it looses
connection to SBS, which is happening each time your Mac suspends.

It would be helpful to have the full command line from your
squeezeslave.plist, as well as the output from squeezeslave -V,
squeezeslave -L and the version plus revision of SBS, to be able to
address your other issues.

Guys,

Does anyone have a clue whether this option will ever be implemented?
I'm using my Squeezebox for almost 5 years now, still waiting for it.

Re: [slim] Frustrated Roku User

2009-11-19 Thread SilverRS8

Your WMP library is generated from the indexing of all media files
placed in some folder. You need to install Squeezebox server on the PC
too and let it index the same folder. Using a Squeezebox the library in
Squeezebox server can be played. So you end up with too library systems
but both using one source. When you edit or change files in the library
you have to update both libraries but thats easy.

Re: [slim] Help me put toghether HW and SW for my server!

2009-11-19 Thread SilverRS8

Which SB is best for you totally depends on the requirements and usage
scenarios.

In my living room I like to see what is playing when sitting in the
couch and hence the SB3 is the best choice. Regarding controlling the
SB3 I prefer both the SBC and the IR remote. Using the IR remote
searching is a lot quicker (using the lazy search plug-in). Searching
with the SBC is no fun! However browsing through your library and
picking tracks or albums to listen is much more fun with the SBC.

In the kitchen I have speakers on the top of the closets and no room to
install a SB3 on a decent place hence the pleads for a receiver to be
placed on top of the closets too.

The upcoming SB Touch has a lot of potential but has two caveats:
1. The touch part will only be usable when placed on comfortable
location. Many SBs are placed at the other equipment often on low height
making the touch part hardly usable unless you like to kneel down every
time
2. Although a very nice color display I expect it to be unreadable from
greater distances, at least not up to the same as the SB3

Hope this is of any help

I like the simplicity of the SBR. They're small, inexpensive, and
easy. I've been happy using either the Controller or iPeng to control
playback.

But it depends on how you envision this integrated into your setup. If
you want an interface on the player, and the ability to show pictures as
a screen saver, etc. the Touch looks to be an excellent offering on the
horizon.

Does Vortexbox utilize AccurateRip, or is it cross-your-fingers
on-the-fly ripping?

>From personal experience I can concur with Pat's recommendations on the
OS. I have no friends (at least, not any with non-Windows OS knowledge)
and I was able to get Ubuntu up and running with minimal effort. I've
got it on an old Pentium-D with 512MB of RAM, no issues. Although I'd
love to upgrade that box to something quieter and more power efficient
like the Atom. Maybe I need to run the ROI on the power savings to
justify the up-front expense, wonder if the wife would go for that...

Where has the regular DVD gone? I can't comment about the US but over
