[slim] Is the SB3 still available?

2009-11-29 Thread eschurig

I was surprised to find the SB3 missing from the player list on the
logitech squeezebox website. Is SB3 obsolete or is it still available?
If it's available, can it still be purchased directly or only through
resellers? Thanks.

Re: [slim] Players stop (or never start playing)?

2009-11-29 Thread pablolie

I continue to observe this phenomenon where players will stop producing
sound and/or become irresponsive to the remote. It happened twice today
that I had to turn players on/and off so that they would play music that
(as per display) they were supposed to be playing. The log file
unfortunately did not report anything at the time.

I have been out of the loop for a very long time so i had no idea i
could use a remote form the Boom even if it is limited it could get me
where i need to go. Wow if i knew this i would not have picked up a
Universal Remote as there was always a chance it would not work and it
did not.

It would of been great if i knew anyone that owned a SB because then i
could use the remote for setup and then stick with the GUI after. Thanks

Re: [slim] Squeezebox without remote

2009-11-29 Thread aubuti

The SB3-style remotes, or the backlit versions, may reappear in the
Logitech store at some point. Or not. But you could use the Boom remote,
which is available. Here's the link I get for the US:
http://buy.logitech.com/store/logib2c/en_US/DisplayCategoryProductListPage/categoryid.17096400#back

The Boom remote doesn't have alphanumeric keys, which I think is a
drawback (esp when you enter your WEP key...). It also doesn't have a
Brightness button, which is used for player firmware updates. So if you
go this route you should set the player to update the firmware
automatically when an update is available. This is done in the initial
configuration menu I mentioned before.

Or you could look for an SB3 on eBay or something. But I just saw Pat's
post, and that looks like the best solution -- borrow a remote.

All you need is to borrow a remote from someone. At least until you can
do problem isolation. Tell folks where you are, and there is a good
chance that you can meet in a pub, borrow the remote and buy the guy a pint.

Tried it and its a no go. Well it looks like i got a paperweight on my
hand here. I know the transporter has buttons on the front which would
have been great for the SB3 but it's too expensive for me so does anyone
else make a wireless devise like the SB3 that allows me to configure it
without a remote cause i would have for my remote to get lost or broken
and end up with another dead item.

I should have thought of that. Try pointing the remote at the SB3 and
then pressing and holding the left arrow key for about 5 seconds. If
you're lucky that will take you into the SB3's configuration menus for
initial setup, including network configuration, wifi encryption key,
etc. If that works then the server should be able to find the player and
you can take it from there. Good luck.

Re: [slim] SB3 bricked? (perpetual reboot)

2009-11-29 Thread linuxtx

I had similar symptoms with one of my SB2, but the other SB2 and SB3
were working fine in other rooms. When I swapped the SB2 I found that
it was the location, not the device which caused the constant reboots.
The bad SB2 worked fine in the other room, and the good SB2 started the
constant reboots when moved. Note these SB2s have been in these same
locations for years nothing has changed with my setup.
What had changed was neighbors and their wireless networks. Basically
the network was problematic in this room even though the rest of the
house worked fine. I had a second wireless router with wireless turned
off. Just to test I turned on wireless on a different ESSID and
channel. I reconnected the squeezebox to the new network and it has
been perfect since.

It's not that I dislike iTunes; I still use it for managing my iPods.
But my iPods are just for car, gym, etc; in the house, I use
Squeezeboxen (http://www.logitechsqueezebox.com), so I wanted my library
to be FLAC since the Squeezeboxen handle it natively (they transcode
ALAC). Plus, a lossless format on the iPods is huge overkill for my
purposes, and dramatically reduces how many songs I can carry. Also, I
want true ReplayGain tags (album and track), which iTunes won't do. I
just didn't see a solution on the Mac that I liked as well as dbpoweramp
on PC, and booting a WinXP virtual machine on my Mac is so easy...so I
went with dbpoweramp and its four-provider metadata solution. I like
its metadata much better than iTunes; it can find cover art for obscure
stuff much more often, for example. I rip

But I do want to revisit Steve Booth's tools to see if they meet my
needs now. Itunes won't until it natively supports FLAC, AccurateRip,
and ReplayGain.

[slim] Rhapsody (only) Rebuffering constantly

2009-11-29 Thread lrcasey

I've been having an issue with Rhapsody feeds on my Squeezebox boom and

need to rebuffer. I changed the Radio Station Buffer Seconds = 15 (per
this FAQ

)but this only seems to affect Internet Radio stations and not Rhapsody.
The internet radio stations I play consistently achieve 12-15 seconds
of buffer so there are no issues at all. Is there a way to change the
Rhapsody Buffer setting?

understand it but it is from the local SBS running on the NAS.

Re: [slim] Going from a PC to a Mac...have questions.

2009-11-29 Thread bigbwb

Thanks for the help thus far guys! I will definitely check out Max for
ripping once the imac arrives.

Kmr - I will use your advice and setup the shared folder for the music,
thanks!

One question though, if running parallels is as easy as it seems(never
tried it yet), am I better just doing everything(music ripping, &
editing) on the windows side using EAC, mp3tag, and media monkey rather
than trying to use the limited programs out there for the mac? I am
familiar with all of these programs and it would seem easy to use
them.hmm.

Re: [slim] Synchronize issue

2009-11-29 Thread aubuti

What are you trying to stream (local music library, internet radio,
music services like Pandora or last.fm)? And is it fair to assume that
you're using your local SBS and not MySB.com? For most things sync
should work just fine, but if you're trying internet radio via MySB.com
then sync is unlikely to work.

It's happening to me (also a paid subscriber). I've noticed it on several
channels. I don't think it happened when I was listening to the free
service, but I haven't pulled logs of the streaming to see what is causing
it to skip and pause.

Re: [slim] Announce: New Squeezeslave 0.9 Release available on sourceforge

2009-11-29 Thread MelonMonkey

It would be helpful if the logging could be changed to include a
timestamp at the start of each entry.

After not touching anything with regards to Squeezeslave setup since I
posted that zipped log file, it is now no longer running. Just dropped
off the process list through subsequent sleep events and at least one
hibernation event.

Does anyone at all have this working in Mac OS 10.6 or newer?

Re: [slim] Going from a PC to a Mac...have questions.

2009-11-29 Thread esbrewer

I have used both Max and iTunes for several years with the various SB
servers. I have never noticed an audible problem with tracks that
either program has ripped completely. However, iTunes has failed to
complete a few tracks out of thousands that Max was able to complete
successfully. Whether that is worth tossing iTunes out for all the
other benefits it offers is simply a matter of choice.

There are many threads here debating the merits of iTunes. Without
addressing those arguments, I think it is safe to say that most people
that actually use iTunes are very happy with it, while those that point
out missing features (FLAC, secure ripping) have a valid point.

I will say however that while the sbooth programs produce good results,
the interfaces take a little getting used to - and crashes are not
uncommon.

In the end, I tend to rip and tag to Apple Lossless with iTunes and
convert downloaded FLACs to Apple Lossless using Max to make things
usable with my iPod.

It would be nice to have mp3tag for the Mac though - very powerful and
easy to use in my experience.

Re: [slim] Going from a PC to a Mac...have questions.

2009-11-29 Thread DaveWr

I used iTunes as my only tool for a significant time - but its ripping
software can be a little optimistic. it errs on the rip something
rather than giving up. I had about 5% of my 800 cds ripped badly
(clicks, dropouts etc.) Also its ever changing interface started to
become painful. Others describe it as bloatware, although frankly the
recent Squeeze environment with Facebook and Flicker apps seems to be
following the same trend. I still use iTunes to mange iPODs, iPhone and
AppleTV, just rip and tag in FLAC then convert and import. If, however
iTunes Store started to provide lossless file downloads I would probably
switch back. Simpler is better IMHO.

Other people will probably give you extreme views on iTunes, it didn't
do what I needed effectively.

Re: [slim] Error: Can't Connect to Rhapsody

2009-11-29 Thread ajkidle

Glad to hear I'm not alone. Rhapsody just recently made a big deal
about an overnight outage for a total system upgrade, not much an
upgrade it seems. The new Norah Jones stopped working this morning too,
I wonder if it is somehow related to a lack of data redundancy on their
servers for some of the material.

Here's hoping they get it fixes, I'd hate to have to go back to buying
CDs. (Seems such a weird concept to me now.)

Re: [slim] Going from a PC to a Mac...have questions.

2009-11-29 Thread cunobelinus
Would someone please switch on the bulb for a poor unenlightened iTunes user
(that's me) and explain (preferably in words of no more than two syllables and
something approaching every day English!):

1. what's so bad about it?

2. How does one do what it does on a Mac, including its compatibility with
iPods (and no, I'm not talking MP3 nor yet AAC. I play lossless on my iPod
through the best headphones I can afford/carry at the time) preferably in a
single easy-to-swallow pill, without committing whatever heinous crimes are the
answer to (1)? Use of Parallels/VMFusionWare etc etc allowed!

I've been using iTunes for about six years, with great delight, in what I
suspect is blissful ignorance, and I really would like to know the answer to
both of these. I've looked at Max, tried EAC on Windows (ugh to both EAC and
Windows, not to mention the database that Max uses - MusicBrainz - which seems
to me to be just about useless, certainly for classical), but have never
ventured into specialist tagging software. That's partly because by the time
I've ripped a track with EAC, for instance, I'm already sobbing with boredom
about the whole idea, and partly because there seems so little point when
iTunes rips to ALAC and AIFF very efficiently, and makes the tagging so
incredibly easy (although it would be nice to be able to rip to both
simultaneously or consecutively and place the resulting files into different
iTunes libraries).

Would switching from iTunes revolutionise my ripping and tagging and - above
all - listening without introducing hours of terminal, oakum-picking tedium and
grief? How?

If there's any feeling that this is off the OP's topic, incidentally, then my
apologies. Quite happy to move to a new thread.

Re: [slim] Going from a PC to a Mac...have questions.

2009-11-29 Thread DaveWr

Hi,

I have used Mac's for many years. I second DaveP opinion, XLD is very
good ripper (includes AccurateRip support through CDParanoia engine).
It allows simple tagging changes. I use Jaikoz to manage library, tags
folder naming, tree structure etc.

I use XLD to convert my FLAC library to a separate AAC folder for iPOD
use.

I hope it helps.

Dave

Re: [slim] Going from a PC to a Mac...have questions.

2009-11-29 Thread thurstongarden

I too have just transferred from PC to Mac after a 10 year absence. WHY
did I not do this sooner? I love it!

I have always been on the lookout for a good media box, focusing on SB,
BBC iPlayer, 4oD, and watching DVD's and this Mac Mini is the mutts nuts
for all via SC and PLEX. PLEX even copes with FLAC in a kind of iTunes
ish mode. The Mini is also very low power so being partly green minded
and partly tight, I don't mind leaving it switched on 24/7.

Of no help to the OP, I still have my work laptop with dbpoweramp on it
for ripping to FLAC. Perhaps without this, I might have a problem.

[slim] Synchronize issue

2009-11-29 Thread SilverRS8

I just recently have a need to synchronize but there is are seconds
difference in the two player. I want to sync between a SB3 and a SB
receiver.
The receiver will start several seconds ofter the SB3.

To illustrate how far the sync is off; the delay sliders in the
settings screen for the SB3 don not provide enough delay.

I'm running SBS Version: 7.4.2 - r29389 @ Sat Nov 21 04:00:54 PST
2009.

Any ideas?
